Corona Virus
By: Dr. MohammedAzim Bagban
Assistant professor (Microbiology)
C. U. SHAH Institute of Science
What are Viruses?
> Viruses are nonliving entities
which are very minute in size
and become living when they
enter any host cell.
> They have some properties of
life but not others
> A virus is a non-cellular
particle made up of genetic
material (DNA or RNA) and
protein that can invade
living cells.
>
2
SARS-CoV-2
Discovery
 Viruses can infect all types of life forms, from animals and plants
to microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea.
3
 Dmitri Ivanovsky's 1892 article
describing a non
bacterial pathogen infecting tobacco
plants
 The discovery of the Tobacco mosaic
virus by Martinus Beijerinck in 1898
Characteristics
 Non living structures
 Non-cellular
 Have a protein coat called the capsid
 Have a nucleic acid core containing DNA
or RNA
 Capable of reproducing only when inside
a HOST cell
 Some viruses may have spikes to help
attach to the host cell
 Most viruses infect only SPECIFIC host
cells
4
CAPSID
DNA
Viral Shapes
5
Helical (e.g. Ebola
Virus)
Polyhedral (e.g.
Adenovirus)
Complex (e.g.
Bacteriophage)
Spherical (e.g.
HIV)
Size of Viruses
Corona Avg. 120 nm
How Viruses enter into the
cells
> Coronaviruses are a large
family of viruses
> COVID-19 is the infectious
disease caused by the most
recently discovered
coronavirus
> The most common symptoms
of COVID-19 are fever, dry
cough, and tiredness. Some
patients may have aches and
pains, nasal congestion, sore
throat or diarrhea.
8
Facts about Corona
> Most people (about 80%)
recover from the disease
without needing hospital
treatment.
> Around 1 out of every 5
people who gets COVID-19
becomes seriously ill and
develops difficulty breathing.
> The disease spreads primarily
from person to person
through small droplets from
the nose or mouth.
9
Facts about Corona
> Till date, there is no vaccine
and no specific antiviral
medicines against COVID-19.
> However, .people, particularly
those with serious illness,
may need to be hospitalized
so that they can receive life-
saving treatment for
complications.
> The possible animal source of
COVID-19 has not yet been
confirmed but research is
ongoing.
