FACTORY BUILDING (Part 2)
INTRODUCTION
 Planning and construction of Factory
building is an important task.
 Building should be designed and built to
protect the property and workers.
 Factory building provide pleasant and
comfortable working environment.
MULTI STOREY or VERTICAL BUILDING
MULTI STOREY or VERTICAL BUILDING
 Multi storey building consist of several
floors.
 It is a vertical structure.
 Machinery and equipment are arranged
in different floors.
 Greater space is available offices can
also be situated in the same building.
ADVANTAGES
 LOW COST OF LAND
Multi storey building requires less
land area for construction.
In cities and towns – land prices are
high – overall cost of a multi storey
building is low.
Cont…
 MORE STORAGE SPACE
Greater space is available for storage.
Lofts can be built for storage purpose
 LOWER AIR CONDITIONING COST
Floor space is less, hence conditioning of air
can be done at optimum cost.
DISADVANTAGES
HIGH COST OF CONSTRUCTION
1. A vast amount of iron and steel, cement and
other expensive materials are used for
construction.
2. Heavy capital investment and considerable
time are required for construction
Cont…
 WASTAGE OF FLOOR SPACE
Considerable floor space is wasted in
constructing elevators.
Provision for fire escapes.
Additional expenditure is involved in making
these provisions.
Cont…
 HIGH COST OF SUPERVISION
More supervisors are required for different
floors.
Effective supervision becomes difficult.
Cost of supervision is increased.
Cont…
 POOR NATURAL LIGHTING
Sufficient natural light is not available to the
ground and middle floor of the building.
Arrangements of artificial lighting leads to
higher cost.
Cont….
 RIGID LAYOUT
Machinery and equipment are arranged on
each floor according to a particular plan.
It is very difficult to make the required changes
and shift machinery from one floor to another.
Cont…
 DIFFICULTY IN MATERIAL HANDLING
Raw materials and work in progress have been
moved from one floor to another.
Materials have to be move to and fro.
This increase cost and time in material
handling.
Cont..
 DIFFICULTY IN EXPANSION
Expansion is possible if it is included in the
initial designed process.
Else it is very expensive to expand the building
since it requires very strong foundations.
Horizontal expansion is not possible because
no extra space is available.
