AI and robotics are facilitating the automation of a growing number of “doing” tasks. Today’s AI-enabled, information-rich tools are increasingly able to handle jobs that in the past have been exclusively done by people, for example, tax returns, language translations, accounting, even some types of surgery. It has been reported that about 60 percent of all occupations have at least 30 percent of activities that are technically automatable, based on currently demonstrated technologies. This means that most occupations will change, and more people will have to work with technology.

The Effects of Automation
Rapid development of digital technologies affects the demand for work in various occupations. Some professions are becoming increasingly popular but many others are less needed due to automation and greater efficiency of workers through the use of new technologies. In this paper we examine the dynamics of occupational structure in Poland, analyzing how changes in employment in the various professions depend on the risk of computerization. To this end we use the probabilities of computerisation of different occupations that were estimated by Frey and Osborne (2013). Using longitudinal data from Social Diagnosis study, i.e. a large survey conducted every two years from 2003 to 2015 with over 26000 of respondents in each wave, we make an empirical verification of the effects of work automation in different occupation predicted by Frey and Osborne. We verify whether the probability of automation of a given profession explains the risk of the job loss, as well as how large was the risk of unemployment associated with automation in recent years. Finally, we discuss the situation of people who lost their jobs estimating the scale of technological unemployment in Poland. The results demonstrated in this paper suggests that the automation is an important factor in the dynamics of the labor market.
Yet another version of my book talk, this time at Harvard Business School, on March 28, 2018. This one had fewer slides with less connecting narrative so that I could spend more time interacting with the audience. I think it went pretty well. As usual, the speaker notes contain the narrative that goes with the slides, which are mostly images.
At some point in the next few decades, the capability of technology could outpace that of life. However, life and technology are not disparate streams but are already starting to converge as high-impact research findings show in synthetic biology, DNA nanotechnology, nanomedicine, neuroimaging, whole brain simulation and longevity.
Global socio-economic, demographic and technological forces that HP calls Megatrends will have a sustained and transformative impact on businesses, societies, economies, cultures and our personal lives in unimaginable ways in the years to come.

I tackle the job of the entrepreneur to redraw the map, and not to accept the idea that technology will put people out of work rather than creating new kinds of prosperity. I try to provide a call to action to throw off the shackles of the old world and to build a new one. So many companies play defense. Cut costs, watch the competition, follow best practices. Great entrepreneurs like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk play offense. They see the world with fresh eyes, taking off the blinders that keep companies using technology to make slight improvements to existing products and practices, rather than imagining the world as it could be, given the new capabilities that technology has given us.

Top of mind at most institutions are a pandemic, the student debt crisis, and budget/enrollment crises. But looming as a bigger issue (when these others lessen) are the changes coming to the workforce as AI-powered devices and systems begin to shuffle the roles of humans in the workforce. Institutions of Higher Ed need to move faster to address workforce changes, to retrain workers, to bring in new student populations, and to help the existing student population finish their degrees in smarter ways. Due to the emergency measures taken at schools and colleges across the country, faculty and teachers are suddenly faced with taking their courses to a remote synchronous or online format. This is particularly difficult for math and science teachers who have hands-on activities, graphs, equations, and much handwritten work from students to collect.

We’ve seen many major industries undergo dramatic change in the last decade (i.e. manufacturing, newspapers, and customer service). With the introduction of MOOCs, adaptive learning systems, and content-delivery platforms, higher education doesn’t seem as “untouchable” as it used to. How can you stay ahead of the trends and stay relevant in this new world of technology-enhanced education?
This “going digital” can be a bit overwhelming. How do you manage the mountain of email and

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

I thought you might need some cheering up.
Maybe we should begin by asking new students where they currently work and what job they think they could move into the quickest? Then plan their schedule.
First, we can’t even memorize it all if we tried. Is it even possible to become an expert in a field with the amount of information and research rising so quickly?
