Meaning
Expansion slot is a type of port or plug
on a computer motherboard that allows
devices or expansion card to attach to the
computer and add new types of functionality
to the computer.
The purpose of expansion slot is to give
computers flexibility and allow for hardware
upgrades, for examples expansion slot allow
you to install new modems, sound cards and
video cards on a computer.
ISA(Industry Standard Architecture)- an
outdated expansion slot technology that was
used in many computers in the 1980’s and
early 90’s.
PCI(Pheripheral Component
Interconnect)- is a standard type of
expansion slot found in most modem
computers. PCI can be used to connect
hardware, such as network cards, sound
cards and modems to a motherboard.
PCIe- is a faster version of the PCI expansion
bay that is commonly used to connect high
powered video cards.
AGP(Accelarated Graphic Port)- is a type of
expansion slot used for graphics display
adapters. PCIe has replaced AGP in many new
computers.
RAM SLOT- this slot is not always considered
expansion slots in the true sense because they
do not add new functionality to a computers.
However, adding more RAM is a common way
to speed up the computer.
PCI expansion slot are used to connect
all sorts of devices such as network cards,
modems, sound cards and older video cards.
AGP slots are used to connect AGP video
cards, while PCI express are typically used to
connect more advanced video cards.
