Question 3:
What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
The ideal institution to distribute my magazine
would be one that has experience in publishing
an established pop magazine and to share
similar values to my magazine.
Egmont
- For my magazine, I have chosen for Egmont to own and distribute my pop music magazine. I
have chosen them because they have an existing pop magazine We Love Pop aimed towards 7-15
year old girls in order for them to be able to be absorbed and engaged for hours. After the young
girls have read the magazine start to finish (maybe a couple of times!), websites are available to
check out afterwards. I think this is a nice link between the two as they promote reading as well
as interacting and using technology and is not primarily based towards one or the other.
- Egmont produces We Love Pop every month. This allows young girls to continue with their
obsession of music, celebrities, fashion and gossip. Prizes and gifts are also available for the girls
to win.
- Overall, Egmont has strong values, which is what my magazine has also. Another key factor I like
about Egmont is that they put a lot of time, effort and focus into producing high quality media
products. They have children as one of their main focus’, highlighted by the idea that they have a
wide variety of products available for children. Similarly, my magazine is designed to appeal to a
specific childrens market (young girls). Due to their existing children publications I believe
Egmont is a suitable media institution for my magazine Pop It.
Egmont
- On a deeper level, regarding workers rights, a code of conduct outlines the strict rules of
the business including the minimum age of employment, wages, hours worked and safe
factory conditions. Ensuring that all that workers their are treated fairly! This is
important as it shows that Egmont cares for its workers and has a high morale.
- Additionally, they only produce products that are safe for young people - starting from
the earliest age.
- Within Egmont is has a dedicated product safety team who along side the creative
department make sure safety considerations are implemented in every stage of the
product development process.
- Products are also designed for foreseeable and intended use and everything is done as it
should be to ensure safety for those using Egmont products, especially those in the
younger age categories.
We Love Pop
- We Love Pop is an existing pop magazine that is owned and published by Egmont. It was
launched in 2011 in order to “capture the resurgence of music magazines in the UK”.
- 42,864 issues are printed each month and sold at the price of £2.99 - giving Egmont a return
profit of £128,163.36 if all issues are sold.
- Egmont is one of the biggest magazine publishers and producers. We Love Pop is the only music
magazine that Egmont produces and is one of their most successful.
- Aimed towards young girls between the ages of 11-15. Which is roughly the same as my intended
audience.
- We Love Pop is selling well in the current, tough, economic climate for print media. This
highlights that We Love Pop itself successfully caters for pop fans as they continuously buy it.
This is also good for Egmont as they have a product that is high in demand.
Other Egmont Products
These are some other magazines that Egmont publish and distribute. Just by looking at the magazines, you can tell that Egmont
know what children like, and can therefore appeal to the children’s needs through these magazines. They have many more than
this as well (including We Love Pop). They have a wide range of childrens magazines, showing that they do care and put in the
effort for children, which is good for me as the magazine I want to produce is for children itself. That in itself shows that Egmont are
effective in their work, which is why it would be ideal for me if they was to distribute my magazine.
For all these facts and statistics alone is why I believe
Egmont would be a good place for my magazine to be sold.
Despite having a monthly music magazine already. I aim
for mine to have a difference by celebrating British artists
only. Hopefully this will also attract the target audience to
purchase the magazine as it will differentiate it from other
pop magazines such as We Love Pop and Top of the Pops
who share similar themes and articles.
