Question 3
What have you learned from audience feedback?
Target Audience
The target audience for my post production feedback is both male and females
between the ages of 17-18. They are well educated, who have remained at
school after GCSE level.
My post production feedback consists of a focus group. I chose this because I
believed this is best suited, I would be able to see and record my audience
feedback, in order to look back at it and improve it. Also, I believe that focus
groups generate more conversation that goes in more depth as opposed to a
questionnaire whereby those answering it may be less honest.
Throughout my focus group I am going to present both my ancillary pieces;my
poster and my magazine front cover, and my trailer alongside existing media
products in order to a real comparison to be made.
I also put my teaser poster and poster on my facebook page for people to
Poster
I showed my target audience two posters. My own poster, alongside Friday the 13th Poster. I then asked
them a couple of questions.
Which one of these film posters do you prefer?
The representatives said that they prefer the one of the left, which was the ‘Deadwood Grove’ poster.
This was because it ‘stands out more’. Another reason why they liked it so much was due to the
darkness, describing it as looking mysterious. This is reassuring as it seems like they believe that my
poster looks professional and realistic. Even more so as it was placed next to an existing film poster.
Also, dark colours is conventional of horror films, the colour black is very dominant. It also represents
the darkness and mystery behind the antagonist, which is one reason I followed the convention in order
to give the audience this vibe and the feedback we received suggests that this was a good idea.
Which one makes you want to go and watch the film and why?
One candidate said they would be more inclined to go and watch Deadwood Grove as they were
interested by the imagery on the poster describing it as ‘really cool’. Furthermore, someone else said
that they would also go and watch it because they would ‘want to know what was going on’, again
relating back to the mystery behind the poster. This is a good indication as it suggests that my poster
does not reveal too much of the narrative. If this was the case, our target audience would be put of
wanting to watch the film.
Magazine Front Cover
I presented the audience with a picture of our front cover alongside an existing film magazine front cover, an edition of
Empire.
Which one of these magazine front covers do you prefer?
Kayleigh said that she prefer Revolution because she prefered the use of colour. Karl agreed, stating the the skull, which
was the mask we used for our killer, stands out for him which attracted him more than the main image of hellboy. This
suggests that the mask plays a vital role in attracting the audience as does the use of colour - both of which suggest
genre. However, Caleb said that he prefered Empire’s front cover as he did not like the text at the bottom of Revolution
because it was difficult to read. This was something we as a group then realised was a very valid point and changed it
immediately.
Do you think that Revolution looks professional?
Kayleigh agreed saying that the font looks professional as does the layout, as well as the idea that it looks to be a
similar layout to Empire, which is a professional film magazine. Karl agreed with this but also gave me some
recommendations. These consisted of changing the font at the bottom as it was difficult to see - as previously
mentioned by Caleb.
Why one makes you want to go and watch the film and why?
Both Karl and Kayleigh said that both of the magazines are effective in convincing the target audience to want to watch
the films and said that they would go and see both based on these front covers. This shows just how effective a
magazine front cover can be in enticing an audience to watch a film which is why we took our feedback seriously in
order to make it as attractive as possible.
Trailer
What do you think of the Deadwood Grove trailer in comparison to Friday the 13th?
My trailer got described as a “brilliant trailer” by one of my representatives and is “not like any trailer
that is out there already”, this is beneficial to me as it makes my trailer sound unique and original, which
is not very common among slasher trailers, some remind you of others. However, I also received some
criticisms such as some of the music could have been more tense towards the end of the trailer when the
action starts picking up. I believe this is a valid point, and with this I can now improve my trailer and
make it even better. Kayleigh also mentioned that in the first montage presented, the teenagers could
have presented themselves as having more fun, if i did this it would help to increase the contrast
between the two different montages. She also mentioned that she liked the strap lines that were
presented as it made it seem more like a horror and helped to add to the suspense.
Lastly, I asked them if they would go to watch Deadwood Grove at the cinema and they all said yes. This
reassures me that my trailer is realistic, original and has a clear narrative the audience wish to follow.
All the feedback I received from social media - Facebook and Whatsapp was all
positive. Comments including it looks “creepy” and “real”. This made us feel as if
we had created professional pieces, which could effectively compete with
existing media pieces.
Another message reads “both are really eye catching and have a symbiotic link,
the colours used are appropriate and effective. The background suits the image
and I like how the skeleton matches the ‘dead’ in the title and the background
matches the ‘wood’, the mist/fog is also a nice touch.” This feedback was
particularly useful as we was given a further insight to perspective and were
able to work out if audiences understood the relation from the main images to
the title of the film.
However, it was said that the teaser poster was better than the main poster as it
was more “creepy”. Despite this the colour contrast in the main poster allows the
antagonist to stand out more, so the audiences attention goes straight to him.
Previous Feedback
Previous/initial feedback from our questionnaire, focus group and teacher allowed our products to
develop and progress to be as successful as they were. This shows as after amendments were
made, we received no more criticism.
I believe that this feedback was relevant and helpful as we was able to see other people's perspective
and pick up on things we perhaps did not see before. One example of this was our original teaser
poster did not feature a release date, just the tagline. This made the teaser look confusing and less
attractive to the audience as they was not receiving key information.
Other examples include the moon in our original poster being to yellow, making it look to unrealistic
and photoshopped. This was key as it is important for horrors to play on audience's fears in order
to create a scare, if the poster looks unrealistic, then the audience are less likely to be scared or
attracted to take further action to watch the film.
Regarding our magazine, it was too plain and didn’t contain enough sell lines. Not only this, but there
was no barcode, the main sell line wasn’t centralised enough and the masthead wasn’t bold
enough. After these changes were made it helped the professionalism of the magazine and also
made it look more attractive.

  • 1. Question 3 What have you learned from audience feedback?
  • 2. Target Audience The target audience for my post production feedback is both male and females between the ages of 17-18. They are well educated, who have remained at school after GCSE level. My post production feedback consists of a focus group. I chose this because I believed this is best suited, I would be able to see and record my audience feedback, in order to look back at it and improve it. Also, I believe that focus groups generate more conversation that goes in more depth as opposed to a questionnaire whereby those answering it may be less honest. Throughout my focus group I am going to present both my ancillary pieces;my poster and my magazine front cover, and my trailer alongside existing media products in order to a real comparison to be made. I also put my teaser poster and poster on my facebook page for people to
  • 3. Poster I showed my target audience two posters. My own poster, alongside Friday the 13th Poster. I then asked them a couple of questions. Which one of these film posters do you prefer? The representatives said that they prefer the one of the left, which was the ‘Deadwood Grove’ poster. This was because it ‘stands out more’. Another reason why they liked it so much was due to the darkness, describing it as looking mysterious. This is reassuring as it seems like they believe that my poster looks professional and realistic. Even more so as it was placed next to an existing film poster. Also, dark colours is conventional of horror films, the colour black is very dominant. It also represents the darkness and mystery behind the antagonist, which is one reason I followed the convention in order to give the audience this vibe and the feedback we received suggests that this was a good idea. Which one makes you want to go and watch the film and why? One candidate said they would be more inclined to go and watch Deadwood Grove as they were interested by the imagery on the poster describing it as ‘really cool’. Furthermore, someone else said that they would also go and watch it because they would ‘want to know what was going on’, again relating back to the mystery behind the poster. This is a good indication as it suggests that my poster does not reveal too much of the narrative. If this was the case, our target audience would be put of wanting to watch the film.
  • 4.
  • 5. Magazine Front Cover I presented the audience with a picture of our front cover alongside an existing film magazine front cover, an edition of Empire. Which one of these magazine front covers do you prefer? Kayleigh said that she prefer Revolution because she prefered the use of colour. Karl agreed, stating the the skull, which was the mask we used for our killer, stands out for him which attracted him more than the main image of hellboy. This suggests that the mask plays a vital role in attracting the audience as does the use of colour - both of which suggest genre. However, Caleb said that he prefered Empire’s front cover as he did not like the text at the bottom of Revolution because it was difficult to read. This was something we as a group then realised was a very valid point and changed it immediately. Do you think that Revolution looks professional? Kayleigh agreed saying that the font looks professional as does the layout, as well as the idea that it looks to be a similar layout to Empire, which is a professional film magazine. Karl agreed with this but also gave me some recommendations. These consisted of changing the font at the bottom as it was difficult to see - as previously mentioned by Caleb. Why one makes you want to go and watch the film and why? Both Karl and Kayleigh said that both of the magazines are effective in convincing the target audience to want to watch the films and said that they would go and see both based on these front covers. This shows just how effective a magazine front cover can be in enticing an audience to watch a film which is why we took our feedback seriously in order to make it as attractive as possible.

  • 7. Trailer What do you think of the Deadwood Grove trailer in comparison to Friday the 13th? My trailer got described as a “brilliant trailer” by one of my representatives and is “not like any trailer that is out there already”, this is beneficial to me as it makes my trailer sound unique and original, which is not very common among slasher trailers, some remind you of others. However, I also received some criticisms such as some of the music could have been more tense towards the end of the trailer when the action starts picking up. I believe this is a valid point, and with this I can now improve my trailer and make it even better. Kayleigh also mentioned that in the first montage presented, the teenagers could have presented themselves as having more fun, if i did this it would help to increase the contrast between the two different montages. She also mentioned that she liked the strap lines that were presented as it made it seem more like a horror and helped to add to the suspense. Lastly, I asked them if they would go to watch Deadwood Grove at the cinema and they all said yes. This reassures me that my trailer is realistic, original and has a clear narrative the audience wish to follow.

  • 10. All the feedback I received from social media - Facebook and Whatsapp was all positive. Comments including it looks “creepy” and “real”. This made us feel as if we had created professional pieces, which could effectively compete with existing media pieces. Another message reads “both are really eye catching and have a symbiotic link, the colours used are appropriate and effective. The background suits the image and I like how the skeleton matches the ‘dead’ in the title and the background matches the ‘wood’, the mist/fog is also a nice touch.” This feedback was particularly useful as we was given a further insight to perspective and were able to work out if audiences understood the relation from the main images to the title of the film. However, it was said that the teaser poster was better than the main poster as it was more “creepy”. Despite this the colour contrast in the main poster allows the antagonist to stand out more, so the audiences attention goes straight to him.
  • 11. Previous Feedback Previous/initial feedback from our questionnaire, focus group and teacher allowed our products to develop and progress to be as successful as they were. This shows as after amendments were made, we received no more criticism. I believe that this feedback was relevant and helpful as we was able to see other people's perspective and pick up on things we perhaps did not see before. One example of this was our original teaser poster did not feature a release date, just the tagline. This made the teaser look confusing and less attractive to the audience as they was not receiving key information. Other examples include the moon in our original poster being to yellow, making it look to unrealistic and photoshopped. This was key as it is important for horrors to play on audience's fears in order to create a scare, if the poster looks unrealistic, then the audience are less likely to be scared or attracted to take further action to watch the film. Regarding our magazine, it was too plain and didn’t contain enough sell lines. Not only this, but there was no barcode, the main sell line wasn’t centralised enough and the masthead wasn’t bold enough. After these changes were made it helped the professionalism of the magazine and also made it look more attractive.
