AUDIENCE
As my target audience for my music magazine is sixteen to twenties, I have
based my reader profile around the life of a seventeen year and by being
sixteen myself, I understood and took advantage to what I listen to as indie-
pop music and the aesthetics/style of it today to represent social groups in my
magazine. Due to the young age of my audience, their interests and tastes
vary which is reflected through the constant change happening in indie-pop as
it holds no defined sound. Though different aspects of my reader profile
deterred from what my magazine presented, this was because of the feedback
I was getting from my peers as indie-pop followers on what they believed
represented the genre well. I also used the survey from my audience research
to assist my guidance in creating my music magazine in order to accurately
represent the social groups associated with indie-pop. Social groups often
seen as listeners of indie-pop are labelled as hipsters, indies and sometimes
grunge. Females are also seen as dominant over the music genre which
further dictated the type of audience I was aiming towards. This represented
different social groups of any race, interest etc coming together to listen to
indie-pop as their own personal music. Under any genre, different social
groups of society are attached to it.
IMAGES
Throughout my magazine, the theme and style was a chic yet laid-back and
sophisticated approach to the front cover, contents page and double page
spread. I have shown these through the pictures I have taken while getting
inspiration and using styles from existing magazines such as NME. I have
used ideas from the mise-en-scene of photographs, being either concert-like
and laid-back or near/outside an arena showing a crowd directly linked to the
type of audience who would be interested in the type of magazine. For this, I
used an image from outside Brixton O2 Academy in times of a concert from an
indie-pop band to take pictures of not only of the venue but also the crowd
waiting outside. This again shows the differences in all social groups attached
under the name of indie-pop as listeners of the music genre. By using this
picture, I would represent the broad audience indie-pop has.
IMAGES
Additionally, with photos of my own artist, I have presented her to suit those
who commonly listen to indie-pop. The trend of today is appearing
aesthetically pleasing which at times mean minimalistic but bold. By doing this,
many wear dark clothing which is simple with one accessory to stand out
further but also, females tend to make a certain aspect of their make-up e.g.
lips or eyes, bold in order to appear unique. I have similarly done this with my
artist with her make-up and style as well as the props of a simple hat or
flowercrown.

CONVENTIONS
With the conventions I either conformed to or challenged, I believed that these
represented my target audience and social groups for indie-pop as the words,
style/tone and layout focused on not only the feedback I had gotten but what
suited the look of the magazine to appear coherent and put together. For
instance, on my front cover, I have listed different indie-pop artists in order to
indicate a connection between the music artists and audience therefore
attracting them to my magazine. Indie-pop is a wide music genre with different
perspectives in how it’s done and by listing different kinds of indie-pop artists, I
represent a variety of what social groups associated with the genre are
interested in. Additionally, in the contents page, the small descriptions of the
features represents particular social groups with not only the bands/artist
names used but also the tone of the features which are laid back yet still
sophisticated which is overall what the original and still existing appearance
as well as style of indie-pop.
CONVENTIONS
Within my front cover, I have mentioned a QR code as well as a direct site as
not all teenagers use QR codes but by doing this, I am appealing to social
groups with the interlink of social media. Social media and Web 2.0 is
increasingly being used with teenagers from as young as fourteen and older
into twenties. Due to this, my target audience are directly connected to social
media and by linking my magazine to this, I will further interest them as I have
more to offer technology wise.
