Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Question 5: How did you attract/address the audience?
1.
2. I included my audience in my music magazine by using different conventions that
would appeal to them and their interests.
For my house style, I wanted to keep it quite simple but effective. I
decided to go with a black and white background and have striking
colours for the use of my conventions in order to appeal to a wide
audience and not to section myself off in the marketing area of just a
rock style or an indie style or a punk style, so I kept things simple to
maintain the attention of a wide ranged audience which was
important to me as my music magazine is an eclectic one and not just
field specific to a specific genre. I decided to have the main feature
article a very bold red as the colour of 'Derry' and the
Anchorage Line would work better in contrast to the black and white
image and background. For my house style I have kept it
black, white, grey, yellow and red as those are the more eye-catching
of the possible colours I could of used, they are also very gender
neutral colours and would appeal to both male and female readers.
As it is a music magazine I wanted the image to speak for itself and
the design to compliment the artists I would be including which is
why I kept with simple colours and striking composition in order for
the magazine to shine in its own brilliance without having too much
artificial accents to it, which I also thought reflected the music
industry as many of the greatest artists don't use a lot of the up-todate and popular voice enhancers as some of the up and coming stars
would.
I’ve also used plugs and flashes throughout my contents and cover
page, this includes ‘selling words’ like ‘plus’ ‘exclusive’ and ‘win’ in
order to attract the audience and persuade them to purchase my
magazine in order to benefit from the offers and exclusives from my
magazine.
3. I also used direct mode of address when taking my photos for the magazine to
include the audience.
Immediately on the cover my model is giving a direct mode of address with her eye
contact to the camera. As I used a medium long shot of the model it creates a sense of a
personal reference and enticing to the audience. Using eye contact can make the reader feel
more involved and allow them to feel a certain connection with the magazines main story.
As the reader will of glanced over at the magazine it may lead interest into the headline
and the rest of the magazine itself which is why direct address is a crucial part of
photoshoots and connecting with the audience.
When I was shooting for my music magazine I had to think of what kind of outfits
and make up looks would address the eclectic nature of my music magazine and
what would appeal to a wide market audience. In relation to this I wanted to include
artists that would complement my models look and work well in the overall
production of the cover of my music magazine. As the audience is eclectic I decided
to do some research via E! News online, The Daily Mail, and Twitter (to see what's
popular on the headlines news feed) in order to get a sense of what artists are
‘blowing up’ and what artists that are already established within their own rights are
maintaining the interest of their fans.
Outfit wise I decided to keep it rather simple with just an ‘icon’ top of Marilyn Monroe and basic black jeans. This attire can appeal to
a wide range audience as Marilyn was a movie star and a very famous icon, she is also seen as a sex symbol which can relate to the
genre of rock and roll. The basic black jeans express the ‘band’ side of genre and the attire that is popular but also genre neutral as it
is a basic piece. It is a timeless item of clothing which is why I felt it would work well with representing social groups and it wouldn’t
eliminate any genre of music as ‘denim jeans’ is a very iconic classic look.
As for the make up on the model, I wanted to keep the make up representative as well; as Marilyn is on the models t-shirt I wanted a
classic and striking make up look that could be used for many genre representations. Black eyeliner is a very versatile make up
product; it is used on bombshells and glamorous women, it is also used on men in Punk Rock genres, it can also add a bit of a more
bold appearance to the eyes and make them stand out – which was crucial to me as I was determined to get a good direct address to
relate to my audience and address them clearly. I also wanted a bold lip on the model, which is very much like the black eyeliner –
it is extremely versatile product. It is used at many different media events and women use make up in order to make themselves feel
pretty and sometimes more dominant. A dark statement lip relates to the social group of punk and alternative theatrical genres as
they are used as an individual statement. I wanted to pair the black eyeliner with another bold make up product that would make
my models face the most striking feature on the cover.
4. Thinking about my music magazine as a brand; I really wanted to create a
music and fashion social group that covers many areas of different social
groups. As my music magazine is eclectic and I’ve included many different
artists that are of a wide fan base I wanted to distract away from the specific
social groups and create a sense of belonging for any audience member within
my music magazine. I wanted to create a personable magazine and one that
listens to the audience and the media of who’s ‘up and coming’ and who’s
already a well established artist within their own right but keeping on the up
to date information about the socialites. This is one of the reasons why I
included media mixers in my contents page because there is no guarantee with
who will be included in that article each month.
I’ve included artists that require a social group such as R&B and pop culture
but also alternative and theatrical in order to tap into a few social groups at
once. All of those social groups are quite pin-pointed on social image and
fashion within their own music and how they want to be seen which is why I
wanted to include those types of artists. I deliberately went for that kind of
situation with a mixture of social groups in order to illuminate specifics and a
way for my magazine to get rid of socialisation and create a magazine much
like a Billboard social group. A lot of people will listen to a multiple range of
music instead of the older days when only specific music tastes were about
and my magazine focuses on pleasing all eclectics in their own music world
with a specific music magazine to appeal to a very diverse audience.
