2. What are the DEMOGRAPHICS of your target
audience?
• AGE: 15-25 (Teenagers and young adults)
• GENDER: Female
• SOCIAL CLASS: C2DE
• ETHNICITY: Any
• RELIGION: Any
• EDUCATION: Still in school or college/in work
3. How did the genre of your music magazine attract
them?
The ‘indie pop’ genre of my magazine coupled with the simple
minimalistic theme of this genre attracts the target audience by
being funky, cool, edgy and almost pairing fashion with music.
The genre of pop is extremely popular, so my magazine being a
pop magazine gives me a wide audience. However I am choosing
to portray the edgier side of pop and representing it in a classier
way for the people who want to read about pop but hate the
typically ‘babyish’ sort of pop.
Bold block colours, monochrome and simplistic photos with little
amounts of text compared to other pop magazines helps attract
the target demographic.
4. What images did you take, use and then edit to
attract your target audience?
The main photos I have took for my magazine are of Freya, who is
posing as Iggy Azalea.
I used many medium /medium long shots of Freya so the audience can
not only see it is her, but also can see what she is wearing as my target
audience are interested in fashion as well as music.
The costume and make up is simple to match the minimalistic theme of
the magazine and so the model does not look too ‘dolled up’ as the
readers want classy looking models.
I did not use any props as again I thought this would ruin the classiness
of the magazine and look a bit tacky, which would not attract my
audience.
5. How did your choice of models conform to
stereotypes of the music genre that you chose?
I used Freya as she is stereotypically naturally pretty and the make up
she wears is done very well but is still simple and not too much. This
conforms to the stereotypes of magazine genre as the model on the
front or in the magazine is seen as a role model, so shouldn’t be
wearing huge amounts of make up. Also, although it actually seems
unfair, only stereotypically good looking models are selected to be in
the magazines.
My specific genre of ‘older pop’ or ‘edgy pop’ is shown by Freya as she
looks quite mature and does not look too ‘cute’ or ‘babyish’.
6. How does your cover lines and main double page
spread story attract your audience?
The cover lines on my front cover are used to attract the target
audience by being simplistic and not giving away too much, just giving
the best hint of what it will be about to intrigue the readers to look
inside and find out (e.g. just the names of who is featuring in the
magazine (Ariana grande, Jess Glynn)).
On the double page spread I used a play on words of Iggy Azalea’s lyrics
as the headline for the article (“first things first she’s the realest”). This
attracts the audience by almost including them in a private joke that
only a few people would get, making them feel special and addressed
directly. The comical nature of the headline also attracts readers.
7. What kind of marketing campaigns do you think would attract
your target audience when your magazine is released?
I think a simple billboard of one block colour with the word ‘VIVO’ on in huge letters would be effective as it
would carry through the minimalistic theme into the advertising campaign and would get people wondering
and talking about what VIVO is, causing them to follow the account on the billboard (visually shown below)
and use the hashtag to find out more about VIVO.
#VIVO would also help involve a younger audience as social networking is hugely popular in the younger
generation and would get the name of my magazine out to the world quickly.
Another idea for a billboard is to have the same block of colour but with the definition of VIVO on, as many
people don’t know what it means. It would then give the hint that it is about music as it is a music term and
would also (like the first idea) get people talking about my magazine, being intrigued by the simple advert.
