Q2. How does your media product
represent particular social groups ?
By Jamie Dawson
My media product represents a particular social group by targeting the 8-13 age
group which is typically associated with the pop music genre. These 8-13 year
olds will mostly be of the female gender as they are more commonly the readers
of the existing pop magazines such as ‘we Love Pop’ and ‘Top Of The Pops’. To
make sure that my magazine is not biased, I have created a layout and colour
scheme that could also attract the attention of male viewers in the same age
group. Although this is not primarily my target group, I do not want to exclude
them from my magazine.
Mise-en-scene has been used delicately within my work to show I can demonstrate
how a conventional pop magazine should look whilst still being able to differentiate
my work from existing magazines. My magazine is appealing to all ethnicities even
though there are a very small minority of black or Asian pop artists. I have appealed
to these social groups by adding in content about new artists of all ethnicities and
other activities within the magazine as shown on the contents, this will be shown
through images of the artists on the new artists page. This is because I am trying to
be inclusive of all social groups and not alienate anyone from buying/reading my
magazine. As my social group is young and will rely on their parents for money, the
price of my magazine is cheaper than existing magazines and so is more affordable,
this shows how my product relates to their social group. The pocket money the
children would normally receive would allow them to purchase sweets and drinks with
the excess money after the magazine, this is not always the case with other existing
pop magazines.
This social group will just be about to be introduced to social media and so will
likely be spending time on their family computer. This is perfect as the extra
gossip from the magazine is available on the website listed within the magazine.
This again is another common convention used within existing pop magazines
such as top of the pops and we love pop, this will keep people interested in
buying my magazine as well as it has more content online and in the magazine.
This media product also represents the younger social group as they will spend
time researching all of their favourite artists online and will be trying to find out
gossip about them, my website www.popparty.com offers them all of this in the
same place so it saves them time when searching around.
Images
The use of images on the front cover and inside the magazine are all photos that
8-13 year olds will find appealing. The images used are colourful and bold which
sets an example to the children to be happy and stand out. The bright colours
will catch their attention so they would read the sell lines. The type of people
that would read my magazine would be smart, popular and enjoy music. They
would have lots of friends in their classes and they would speak to each other a
lot inside and outside of lesson. They would wear bright coloured clothes as well
as dressing like their idol, they get the idea of which clothes to buy from the
magazine.
Images 2
The images within my magazine will all feature popular pop artists that will be
represented in a positive way. They are all smiling with positive body language
that is used to attract the target audience. The male stars will be presented to
the female target audience as the dream man, this attracts them as they want to
know more about him. This has been created by using different photography
skills to make some images bright and others shady and mysterious, this makes
them want to open up the mag and find out more about them. The fact that they
are all smiling indicates that the magazine is friendly and insinuates that we can
be trusted by the target audience, this will increase sales and repeat purchasers.
The costumes used have also been fitted to the gender of the artist and target
audience. The boys are all wearing hoodies, t-shirts and jeans. This is a common
convention in the pop genre and it attracts the female target audience. The
females are all wearing bright colour to stand out, again this is another
convention of female pop music artists.
Language And Content
The use of language inside the magazines will attract the reader to read my
media product because it uses simple words which they can relate to and easily
understand. This makes them feel they are understood by the magazine and
boosts their confidence in buying this product again. These particular social
groups are aspirers. They are aiming to be as famous as their favorite artists and
will read any magazines or blogs to get a head start in life. The music magazines
usually include quizzes to see which type of person you are or what type of
person you will be in the future. The online articles on pop websites feature
sections to encourage the target audience to try something new and tips on how
to be successful. The social groups I have represented will have all of these
privileges as part of our paper version magazine. For my magazine , I wanted to
break away from the general female based marketing and try to design a
magazine that is more ‘boy friendly’. This will include the same images and
layout but feature a wider range of content which has been previously stated.
Although my main target for class is people's parents working in the ABC1 sectors,
I am not trying to prevent any other target groups from purchasing my product.
To prove this, my music magazine is slightly cheaper than its competitors and it
is a excellent price for the content within. It will also have certain promotional
issues where the magazine will become cheaper, this will catch the eve of the
lower band workers.
The main sell line contributes to the representation of the band because they all
want success which gives a positive stereotype of young people which is not
already there with boys around their age. Stereotypically, they create trouble
and do not strive for success, the members of Boy Balance portray the exact
opposite of this, which is challenging the stereotype. This is setting a positive
reflection of the youth. The images used of them on the double page spread sow
how close they all are and show that they have a strong friendship. Although, the
solo image of ollie is shaded which portrays how young people feel when they are
no longer with their best friends. Other images on this page and the contents
page are all taken to portray a good representation of young people. They are all
happy, bright and enjoying their life's which sends a message to the target
audience that that is how they should be living their lives.
