The Earth Is A Collection Of Eight Short Stories By Jhumpa...
Unaccustomed Earth is a collection of eight short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri that focuses
on members of Bengali family dealing with either America or England. These are the
people who have migrated from India to have a better life. The stories deal with the life
of these immigrants and their children who try to bring balance between their culture and
a new country. Jhumpa Lahiri discusses the relationship shared by the couples in stories
and how it differs from the relationship their children share with their spouse. Although
couples in the stories deal with different problems, they share this sense of importance of
lovein common. This is seen in stories like Unaccustomed Earth, Hell Heaven and A
choice of Accommodations. In Unaccustomed Earth we will look at the relationship
shared between Ruma s parents, in Hell Heaven we will look at relationship shared
between Usha s parents (Shymal and Aparna) and in A choice of accommodations we
will see what sort of relationship Amit and Megan share.
In Unaccustomed Earth we see that Ruma s father visits her after his trip from Europe.
Ruma has not seen her father since seven months. There are some presumptions about
her father s visit that turns out the other way round. She taught that her father might want
to move in with her after her mother s death, but it turns out that her father had no such
intentions. This story brings forth the relationship that Ruma s parents shared.
Their parents were very different from each other in

Two important people in my life, inspired me to exceed and to never look back. There
names are Frank Ke Jr. and Hideo Sakata, my grandfathers. They both died early in my
life but, I still remember them both clearly . These men worked all there life to try and
make their kids life better. Frank Ke Jr., was an Executive chef for Royal Kona Resort, as
a chef he worked night and day, and didn t have holidays off but, he still found time to
go home and love his family. One of the story s my mom told me was they celebrated

he was hardworking but also a family man. Hideo Sakata, he worked for the Department

Case Study Of Chixchops
TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY This part presents the data describing the product, the
production process, the equipment, resource requirements, and machineries to be used
together with the raw materials for the products, floor plan of the business, location,
facilities, utility cost, production cost, and prices of the product. BUSINESS and
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Filipinos are fond of eating grilled chicken pork making it
one of the best sellers nowadays in food chains and restaurants. ChixChops is the name
of the business because the main products are chicken and pork chops. The proponents
combined the words chicken and pork chops to make it ChixChops . The secret to a

The customer can choose what part of chicken they want and what sauce they prefer
for their meals. There are 3 types of sauces which include: catsup, soy sauce with
calamansi, and barbecue sauce. ChixChops will offer plain rice and fried rice. After
receiving the customer orders and payment the cashier will transfer the information to
the Cook for them to cook the order, while waiting the Cashier will prepare the sauce
and drinks of the customers. If the order is complete, the Cashier will tap the bell in
the Pick up Counter and call the Customer number for them to know that their order is
complete. ChixChops will use brand new equipment to ensure good quality. The
business will ensure that all raw materials are fresh and clean. The raw materials are
accessible to the location of the business and this is one advantage for the business in
case of shortage of materials. The advantage of Chixchops towards its competitors is
that grilled chicken and pork chops will be cook only if the customers take an order,
ensuring that customers can get their meal hot from the kitchen. It will take 10 to15
minutes only to have their orders.
Symbolism In Sweet Potato Pie
1.A) I believe that the phrases the dry September of the dirt roads, grassless yards of
the shanty town, and a brilliant splash of sunny yellow against the dust contribute to the
atmosphere by revealing specific details of the setting. When the author uses the phrases
the dry September of the dirt roads, and sunny yellow against the dust, it portrays the
setting as dry and dusty. This is further supported by the phrase grassless yards, which
allows the reader to picture the landscape as bare, dry ground. The term shanty town
means an area consisting of a large amount of roughly made houses.
B) The atmosphere of the story is impoverished.
C) The selected phrases contribute to the atmosphere because, as mentioned above, they
include terms such as shanty town, dirt roads, and against the dust that reveal the setting
as a poor, dry landscape. This, in turn, contributes to the overall atmosphere of poverty....

The use of flashbacks as a literary device is similar to those in Sweet Potato Pie
because they both involve the main character looking back at the place where he or she
grew up. They are also similar because of the fact that the main characters past home
was not very financially stable. This is supported by the use of the term shanty, meaning
crude dwelling, in both of the stories. However, they are also different in the fact that
Buddy lived alone with his family in Sweet Potato Pie, while the main character in
Marigolds lived in a community.
3. The setting of the story does appear relevant to the plot of the story. I believe this
because the main character lives in a poor community, which would definitely influence
the story and add to the various problems and conflicts of the
Cleopatra Report
Cleopatra Vll was born in 69 BC, in Alexandria, Egypt. Despite what people say today,
that she was glamorous and beautiful, she was far from it.
She is shown on ancient coins with a long hooked nose and masculine features. Although
she was not beautiful she was clearly a very seductive woman, and she used this to
further Egypt politically. She had a beautiful musical voice. It is also said that she was
highly intelligent. She spoke nine different languages, and she was the first Ptolemy
pharaoh who could actually spoke Egyptian.
She ascended the Egyptian throne after her father, Ptolemy Xll Auletes died in 51 BC.

In 46 BC he invited Cleopatra to go to Rome to be with him. She then went taking
Caesarion with her. That same year in September he celebrated his war triumph s in
which was called the March of Triumph s. In this march he paraded through the streets
of Rome with his prisoners, including Cleopatra s sister Arsinoe. Caesar spared Arsinoe s
life after she betrayed Cleopatra, but later Mark Antony had her killed after Cleopatra told
him to.
Cleopatra lived in Caesar s villa near Rome for almost two years. He showered
Cleopatra with gifts and everything she wanted. It was rumored that Caesar was
intending to pass a law allowing him to marry Cleopatra and make their son his heir. It
was also rumored that Caesar, who had accepted a lifetime dictatorship and sat on a
golden throne in the Senate, intended to become the king of Rome. On March 15, 44
BC a crowd of conspirators surrounded Caesar at a Senate meeting and stabbed him to
death. Cleopatra knew that she was also in danger so she quickly left Rome with her

rumored that Cleopatra had him. Cleopatra then made Caesarion, her son, co regent.

Beethoven Symphony 9
I choose Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, Choral : IV. Ode to Joy composed
Beethoven. I have no specific reason why I picked this song, besides the fact that I
admired Beethoven when I was young. When I listened to the piece the first time I was
surprised by its dynamics. In my head I have this preconceived idea that classical music
was soft. I did a little research on the classical era and discovered; that music was an
important part of society at the time and Beethoven was one of the top composers at the
time. I was also informed that the all classical musicwas dynamic, the song could be quiet
one minute then loud the next. In the beginning of SymphonyNo. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125,
Choral : IV. Ode to Joy it seemed to drag, and then
How Far Was the First World War the Main Cause of the Fall...
How far was the First World War the main cause of the fall of the Romanovs in February
1917?
It could be argued that the First World War, which began in 1914 was the main reason
for the fall of Tsarism in February 1917. However, there is more evidence to suggest
that it was not in fact the war that lead to the downfall of the Tsar, but other factors such
as the lack of effective leadership by the Tsar and the fact that the Duma, his appointed
government, had little power to make change.
One important reason why it could be seen that the First World War was the reason for
the fall of Tsarism is the fact that in 1915 Nicholas left the Winter Palace and took direct
command of the army. This meant he was blamed solely for Russias ... Show more

In October 1905 he published the October Manifesto, accepting the creation of a
legislative parliament or duma, which pleased the liberals. However, then in April
1906, he published the fundamental laws which stated that he still had overall control
over Russia. Also, throughout the years 1905 1917 there were a number of dumas, all
set up and subsequently dissolved by the Tsar when he believed they were getting to
powerful. Also, in early 1917 236 of the duma s 422 deputies formed the Progressive
Bloc along with other supporters of the Tsar, such as the Kadets, Octobrists, Nationalists.
The Bloc tried to persuade the Tsar to make concessions in order to retain his power but
typically he was unwilling to listen. Listening to the Bloc at this point could have saved
Nicholas and therefore the rule of Tsarism but his inability to trust his ministers and take
their advice meant he his supporters quickly became opposers, weakening his rule at this
crucial time.
Another reason for the fall of Tsarism in 1917 that was highlighted but not caused by
the war is the fact that Russia was a difficult country to run. Russia s economy was
backward compared to those of other Western countries, 4/5 of it s population were
peasants, who were more often than not illiterate and lived in severe poverty. Although
by 1917, improvements had been made to the

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESRPONSIBILITY (CSR)
Introduction
Today, the world faces numerous challenges ranging from dreadful environmental
conditions through poverty and human rights, to energy and resource supply issues.
Social responsibility policy focuses on using the capabilities of a business to improve
lives and sustain our planet through contributions to local communities and society at
large. In other words, a business should fully realize it s potential as an organization to
make a better world through corporate self regulation assimilated into a business module.
CSR and Human Rights The global community expects companies to operate with due
admiration for human rights. Beyond meeting regulatory requirements and social
expectations in areas in which they operate, by proactively presenting more rigorous
international standards such as the United Nations Global Compact, companies will
reinforce their commitment to human rights. In 1998 the Secretary General of the UN,
declared that he was building a more solid relationship with the business community.
Thriving markets and human security goes hand in hand: without one we will not have
the other (Annan,
1998, p. 1820). Afterwards, a World Economic Forum was held in 1999. At the forum,
Kofi Annan introduced what is known the Global Compact . This is the ten principles

Jerzy Kosinski Being There Essay
I choose the book Being There by Jerzy Kosinski. As I was looking through all the
possibilities of what to read, this book was the one that caught my attention. The
passage that explains a little of what the book is really drew me in. The words money,
power, and sex are what essentially made me choose the book. It to me sounded
somewhat like a drama. After reading the book, it wasn t totally what I expected. It
was interesting, but it wasn t as informative to me. I wanted more to the book,
especially with the way it ended. The ending upset, because it all of a sudden just
ended. I thought by the end of the book Chance would ve been figured out, and all
would ve been ok, but it just ended so abruptly. Even though it ended suddenly, it did
end with him being at a place where he was content and at peace. Although it wasn t
how I expected, I did enjoy it. The context behind the book is what kept me going, and I

He s perception on the outside world never really changed, he was still confused and
always connected everything back to his garden. The minimum change I say in
Chance was he somewhat found love. EE the person who backed into him with her
limousine fell in love with Chance, and while Chance love for her wasn t like the love
she felt for him, it was still apparent the attraction was there. The other change he
experienced as I read the book, is Chance gained a lot more of friends and companions.
In the beginning he essentially had no one besides Louise, who left and the old man,
which he rarely ever saw. I will say, once Chance was behind the walls of the house he
had been trapped behind for many years, you could essentially say he was free. He
experienced a new life, and a new world. I don t think chance really influenced me in a
way, just because I couldn t really relate to him in a way, but he did make me realize that
people can take things and interpret them into their own
Science National Honor Society Reflection
In my role as secretary for Science National Honor Society (SciNHS), I was responsible
for keeping an accurate record of the attendance and event credits of the members.
However, while keeping this record I noticed that many members were struggling to meet
their membership requirements. Some lacked the attendance requirements, while others
lacked the science event credits. As one of the leaders of SciNHS, I knew it was my
responsibility to solve the problems that arose in the club. However, we were all having
difficulty finding a solution for how to help out the struggling members without losing
integrity or being unfair. Since we did not want our members to struggle to continue in
the club, we brainstormed with the leadership team about possible
Hydrogen Bonding
A hydrogen bond is the electromagnetic attractive interaction between polar molecules in
which hydrogen (H) is bound to a highly electronegative atom, such as nitrogen (N),
oxygen (O) or fluorine (F). The name hydrogen bond is something of a misnomer, as it
is not a true bond but a particularly strong dipole dipole attraction, and should not be
confused with a covalent bond.
These hydrogen bond attractions can occur between molecules (intermolecular) or within
different parts of a single molecule (intramolecular).[1] The hydrogen bond (5 to 30 kJ
/mole) is stronger than a van der Waals interaction, but weaker than covalent or ionic
bonds. This type of bond can occur in inorganic molecules such as water and in organic
molecules like DNA ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the central interresidue Nв€’HВ·В·В·N hydrogen bond between guanine
and cytosine is much stronger in comparison to the Nв€’HВ·В·В·N bond between the
adenine thymine pair.[11]
The length of hydrogen bonds depends on bond strength, temperature, and pressure. The
bond strength itself is dependent on temperature, pressure, bond angle, and environment
(usually characterized by local dielectric constant). The typical length of a hydrogen
bond in water is 197 pm. The ideal bond angle depends on the nature of the hydrogen
bond donor. The following hydrogen bond angles between a hydrofluoric acid donor and
various acceptors have been determined experimentally:[12]

Involvement of Canonical Insulin
To look at the involvement of canonical insulin/PI3K/Akt pathway in adipocytes leptin
secretion the study measured it using insulin resistant DIO mice with HFD and CD
fed mice, with the HFD mice gaining higher body and fat mass. Cell lysate of both
HFD and CD fed mice were subjected to western blotting and it was observed that
phospho Akt level in adipocytes from HFD fed mice was lower than the CD fed mice
after insulinstimulation, showing insulin resistancein the HFD fed mice. Also, the fasting
leptinlevel of HFD fed mice is ten times higher than the CD fed mice. Refeeding,
resulted in no significant increase in plasma leptin levels in HFD fed mice after two
hours, whereas with the CD fed mice there was a significant increase in plasma leptin
levels. This implies that leptin production and/or secretion after refeeding is impaired
in HFD fed mice. To verify that there is a decrease in systematic leptin level, the
researchers isolated primary adipocytes from HFD and CD fed mice and then
determined ISLS in ex vivo. The result was that ISLS was significantly lower in primary
adipocytes from HFD fed mice. This supports the hypothesis that impaired ISLS in HFD
fed mice in vivo and ex vivo was dependent on PI3K/Akt activation. Furthermore, there is
an essential role of PI3K/Akt in regulating ISLS in primary adipocytes as seen when
blocking PI3K activity with wortmannin. This significantly inhibits ISLS without
affecting basal leptin secretion. Also, AKT 1/2 inhibitor Akti
Folly Vs Erasmus
Erasmus in The Praise of Folly did something that was very different from writers before
him and created a piece that was written differently, free thinking, and went against the
authorities of the time. Erasmus created a piece that is truly modern and inspires other
free minded individuals to write freely and express their own beliefs.
In The Praise of Folly, Erasmus created a piece very different and very innovative for
the time. Erasmus may have been the author of this piece, but he was not the narrator,
instead it was Folly that was the narrator of this work. Comparatively to works seen in
the middle ages where works were typically about religion and the narrator played a very
small part on the work. Also, it was atypical if there was
Fast Food Obesity Essay
Throughout the years, fast food is becoming more and more of an outlet for many
people that are short on change, in a rush but still need to grab a bite to eat, or even who
are just too lazy to cook a meal. Fast food is very cheap, yet when we eat it we don t
necessarily realize the price we pay when we are starting to gain weight. Who is to
blame? The person that is addicted to fast food, or the fast food restaurants? I agree fast
food is cheap, yet delicious. I understand that it may get addicting, I do not believe that
it is the restaurants fault for your lack of self control. Eating fast food all the time can
put you up against some major health risks. As claimed by, Fast Food and Obesity,

As the fast food world spread across the nation, obesity was shortly following in its
footsteps. According to, The History of the Fast Food Industry, Since 1970 the amount of
fast food restaurants have doubled, which equates to roughly 300,000 establishments in
the United States. Ironically, 33.8% of the U.S. population is affected by obesity and
19% of children and young adults are also affected.
Now days, you can find a fast food restaurant every time you turn a corner. According
to, Sarah Muntel, the Author of Fast Food Is It the Enemy, you can choose from a
variety of things to eat. You can get a greasy burger, crunchy tacos, or a drink that is
filled with sugar. Why should we take the time go buy and prepare a meal when there
are a variety of foods all around you? That is the problem that we are facing. Fast food
is extremely cheap. You can order dollar cheeseburgers, dollar sodas, and you can even
make those orders supersized just with pennies. People even claim that it is cheaper to
eat at a restaurant than it is to prepare a meal in your own kitchen. Most Americans
now days are having overscheduled and overcommitted jobs, which means that there is
no free time in their daily lives to prepare their own meals. There is not anything easier
than just going through the drive thru at your favorite fast food restaurant on your way
home from work, or taking your child out for a milkshake if they do well in their
baseball game. The problem is, people don t look
The Second Seminole War
The events leading up to the Second Seminole War remain some of the most perverse
and contentious proceedings to have occurred in American history. Between 1819, the
ending of the First Seminole War, and 1835, the beginning of the Second, the United
States government did everything within its power to not only remove the Natives
Americans from its borders, but did so through seditious and deceptive legislature. It
was during this time that the expansion of the power of the president and a complete
disregard for foreign affairs characterized the union and their willingness to use
extralegal means to achieve their desired goals. This era remains one of the saddest
affairs in American history, and provides insight into how the executive branch was able
to attain new power during the era of Jackson.
In order to understand the significance of the events preceding the Second Seminole War,
one must first examine the First Seminole War. Frustrated with Seminole protection of
runaway slaves, Andrew Jackson and more than three thousand men entered northern
Florida in 1816 and began to decimate Seminole populations. Despite most of these
campaigns being unsanctioned by the United States government and protested by the
British and the Spanish, Jackson was received as a war hero throughout the nation and
protected from punitive measures. The refusal of the government to punish Jackson for
the injustices led to foreign hostilities with both Britain and Spain. The Adam Onis

The Great Gatsby Cultural Influences
Throughout the past, writing has left an influential mark on literature and culture due to
widespread change happening in America during those times. The early twentieth century
serves as an excellent illustration of the theory that writers reflect the major cultural
influences of their time (Cultural Influences on American Literature in the Late
Nineteenth Century). F. Scott Fitzgeraldwas an outstanding author who greatly
influenced Americans of his time through his phenomenal works of literature. One of his
most influential novels, The Great Gatsby, defines this modernistic lifestyle of this era
through his reflection of the thriving middle and upper classes. This movement focused

Scott Fitzgerald s novel, The Great Gatsby, strongly reflected the attitudes of people
during the twentieth century by their disillusioned idea of the American Dream. In this
novel, Fitzgerald creates situations and characteristics similar to his life while presenting
the skewed moralities of society in the twentieth century. For example, Fitzgerald displays
the desire for money during this era through the character Jay Gatsby who throughout the
novel obtains money through dishonesty of his occupation. This change in America was
the turning point for how the would continue to be influenced by the desire for wealth
and materialism. F. Scott Fitzgerald reflects this idea of the modernistic lifestyle and has
educated society on his view of this change of morals in the twentieth

Abstract This written report appertains to the book Stalemate Causes and
Consequences of Legislative Gridlock, written by Sarah A. Binder. It was published by
Brookings Institution Press in Washington D.C. and copyrighted by Sarah A. Binder in
2003. Introduction of the Author Stalemate causes and Consequences of Legislative
Gridlock was written by Sarah A. Binder, who is a senior fellow in Governance
Studies. In this book, Binder has reviewed more than fifty years of congressional
legislative history. In particular, she has successfully compared the regularity of
Congressional deadlock and, in doing so, has offered readers an informed and intuitive
glimpse into Congress performance over this period. Summary Sarah A Binder begins

Binder explains that our founding fathers created a bureaucratic system that competes
within itself to serve its own interest and protect our constitution from tyranny. This
statement is so true I cannot argue whether it is true or false, but I would like to
reinstate a few points Binders statement make. The pilgrims came to America because
of the religious persecution in The British Empire in which tyranny engulfed the
people. I can see why the founding fathers when writing the constitution held so dearly
their fear of tyranny because they had experienced it firsthand. I believe that our
political system has held well to these principals and its core values have remained the
same since the day the constitution was signed in 1776. Binder then states the main
issues of the Congress of 1965 66, health care, environment, civil rights, transportation,
and education statutes (Binder, 34). Binder is pointing out that the Congress of 1965
66 under President Lyndon B. Johnson was the most productive Congress of all time. I
would have to agree with Binder this Congress faced great challenges like issues of
civil rights. People might think that gridlock only exists today, given the many conflicts
that have raged between Congress and President Obama and led to several government
shutdowns. However, the author points out how gridlock also existed during President
Bush s presidency, which ended up being the main reason he broke his promise not to
raise taxes and decided instead to agree with congressional Democrats to do so.
President Clinton s presidency was also characterized by much gridlock with
congressional Republicans, which explains why he was unable to pass his healthcare
reform act through
A Literature Of Place Barry Lopez Summary
Summary
In A Literature of Place , author Barry Lopez begins his work by stating that a kind of
writing called nature writing or landscape writing has begun to receive more attention,
creating the belief that it was a relatively new type of writing (at the time). It was actually
quite the opposite. According to Lopez, writing about the impact that nature and location
has on culture is one of the oldest, and perhaps most singular, threads in American
writing. The real topic of nature writing, Lopez says, is not nature but the evolving
structure of communities from which nature has been removed, often as a consequence
of modern economic development. Lopez also states that it is his belief that a human
imagination is shaped by the environment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, Lopez s imagination was shaped by the abnormal nature of water in a
drought stricken California valley, the sound of wind rustling the leaves of eucalyptus
trees, the tilled earth of crop fields, the beautiful sunsets over alfalfa fields, the smell
of flowers near the orchard, and the aftermath of a Pacific storm ravaging a coastal
beach. He then writes that it s important to become intimate with a place, meaning that
instead of simply observing your surroundings and watching the world go by, you
should find a special place in your heart for a certain area that s special to you in some
way. He s essentially saying that your should take this place into your very being on a
spiritual level. Finally, Lopez states that he and many others wonder why people have
become so anxious over undeveloped land. The answer is simple. These places hold a
special place in their hearts, and they don t want to see them go. It may be more
important now to enter into an ethical and reciprocal relationship with everything
around us than to continue to work toward the sort of control of the physical world
that, until recently, we aspired to, (A Literature of Place) says Lopez. He ends his
writing by saying this; We keep each other alive with our stories. We need to share
them, as much as we need to share food. We also require for our health the presence of

Benefits of Indian Gaming and its role in Global Development of Tribal Nations
Indigenous peoples throughout the world have suffered and continue to suffer ever since
white people stepped foot onto their lands. In the Americas, countless incidents of
genocide and blatant violations of human rights have occurred time and time again.
Those indigenous to North America, known commonly as Indians or Native Americans,
have faced an immense amount of racism, hatred, and oppression on the very same land
that was once their own, before it was stolen by the colonists. Native Americans have
faced economic hardships that are unmatched by any other race in the United States; the
statistics are absolutely staggering and horrifying to know that such ... Show more content

There is a myth that the native peoples of the Americas were ever conquered, assimilated,
wiped out, or that they never even existed. The fact is that Native Americans have been
consistent with their refusal to assimilate into white culture and to trade in their
traditional values for capitalistic materialism, and they have continued to survive in a
country that essentially tried to kill off their race through various means of termination,
relocation, genocide, and other policies that at one time or another were implemented by
the federal government. The American government viewed Native Americans as a
problem that had to be dealt with from the moment they arrived on this continent. Still
today, many federal officials and bureaucrats continue to view Native Americans as a
problem that must be dealt with accordingly. Tribal nationshave suffered centuries of
turmoil, as the federal government implemented a series of policies to deal with the Indian
problem and drive Natives close to extinction. Around 1900 is when the Native American
population in the United States reached its nadir with a total American Indian population
of only about 125,000, which had been reduced in a few centuries from 5+ million.
Removal, reservations, and allotment contributed to the declining
Essay on Obesity Alters Gut Microbial Ecology
A common theme among the concerns of today s American citizens is that of obesity.
Obesity, identifiable by abnormal fat accumulation, can be defined in absolute terms by
one who has a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30. It is estimated that over 30 percent of
American adults are clinically obese. This number has shown a dramatic increase from
the 15 percent of American adults suffering from obesity in 1980. Globally, 400 million
adults are obese, while predictions place this number at 700 million by 2015. The major
issue confronting this adiposity is the health conditions that accompany states of extreme
obesity. These include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis
among others. The escalating number of obese and... Show more content on

* These microorganisms help in extracting calories from polysaccharides in our diet. *
They are able to break up polysaccharides that we would otherwise not be able to
hydrolyze. * Studies in mice, which also have large numbers of microbes living in
their guts, have shown that there may be a link between storing energy as fat and
microbial activity. * It is thought that the microbes regulate the expression of the gut
protein fasting induced adipocyte protein (FIAF). This protein is an inhibitor of
lipoprotein lipase (LPL). * If the microbes suppress FIAF, then the level of LPL
increases. * Increased LPL levels enhance fat storage (make an individual fatter). *
There exists a highly adapted range of bacteria present in the human gut that are inherited
maternally.
The hypothesis:
Obesity may be linked to differences in the microbial makeup of each individual.
Individuals prone to obesity may possess microbes that are more efficient at extracting
energy from food than lean individuals.
Questions addressed by the experiment:
* How does the structure of the gut microbial community differ between individuals? *
Does being a member of the same family affect the microbial community? * Does obesity
affect the community structure? If so, at what taxonomic level does this occur, and does
the gut community
Xbox Vs Ps4 Research Paper
Did you know 65% of all families in the united states play video games? According to
the entertainment software association. But you have choices to gaming, with consoles
being the second most popular gaming device you have options to your console, you
could choose the Ps4 made by Sony or the Xbox one made by Microsoft but I ll be telling
you why the ps4 is better.
One of your console options, the Xbox One that sells for $349.99 the cheaper of the
two consoles. The Xbox one includes an external power brick and external storage just
like the previous model, the Xbox 360. Speaking of Xbox 360 the Xbox one is backward
compatible, this means you can play all of the Xbox 360 games on the Xbox one. Sadly
the Xbox one does not include Bluetooth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For starters, they re both originally black in color. Both have 500 gigabytes of storage,
and 8 gigabytes of RAM. Similarly the Ps4 and Xbox one require you to pay for online
gaming and various other apps and activities. Additionally the Ps4 and Xbox one have
cloud saved games which track your progress and will save your content if you get a
new console, and sign in with the same account. The Ps4 is better than the Xbox one
because it comes with a charging cable for the controller when bought, as for the Xbox
one you need to buy either a charging dock or batteries. Speaking of charging there is
no bulky battery pack on the back of the controller making it easier to hold. In addition,
the Ps4 itself has an internal power supply oppose to the big, box like power box on the
Xbox one s cable.
Some other, less important reasons the Ps4 is better are the games download quicker
and boot up/start quicker than the Xbox one. Speaking of games the Ps4 has more
exclusive games and more hyped up games than the Xbox one. Furthermore, the Ps4 is
more aesthetically pleasing in the design than the Xbox one which looks like a
Descriptive Essay On The Mountains
Going and taking micro adventures to the mountains which were fairly close to my
house was a bit of a semi common thing, however going with only friends of mine was
a thing I didn t do at all. When the suggestion to go up by my friend Alex was made,
Jesse and I quickly agreed to go along with this plan. We then proceeded to make our way
to the mountain and as we were driving up I decidedto chime in and make a suggestion,
saying We should climbup from the base of the waterfall everybody else quickly agreed
since that seemed to be a nice little leisure activity for a group of teenagers. With the
weather slowly warming melting the snow on the mountains causing water flow the
scenery was just gorgeous, with many rocks having a bright reflective look caused by
the sun and water interacting. This scenery was just perfect for a climb up the fall. As
we climbed we all took notice of just how pretty the mountain was. Seeing trees, rocks,
water spiders, and many other things we don t see every single day. As we continued
up the mountain we eventually got this amazing area with some more reflective
brown gorgeous rocks that were similar to a bunch of tiny steps. With all the water
running down the rocks my dark brown Sperry s I decided to wear started to show
why they were called boat shoes this is because they were quite good at sticking to
surfaces without slipping. Even though highly unorthodox with my shoes for some
reason they seemed to work quite well except for coming untied more times than I
would have enjoyed. As we continued to climb we took a few group pictures as well
as making a fair amount of jokes to help ease our minds off of the physical work we
were putting into climbing up this mountain. After we climbed up for about fifteen
minutes much of the rocks that had places for our feet to go into and cradle providing
full support were gone and being left with solely smooth rocks that if you wanted you
could slide down with relative ease. So the rate at which we were scaling these rocks
had to slow, however not terribly but our speed was crippled by being a little more
cognizant and careful. Never the less we continued to climb up, eventually a few more
these rocksteps showed up and of course we
The North American Free Trade Agreement
The North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, which was signed into law by
President Bill Clinton on December 8th, 1993, went into effect on January 1st, 1994.
By December of 1994, Mexico underwent a deep economic crisis, which saw the
devaluation of the Mexican peso, a deterioration of wages, rampant unemployment, as
well as extensive personal and corporate bankruptcies that led to the poverty and
malnutrition of many of its citizens. As we explore the economic effects that NAFTA has
had on Mexico, we must consider what economic disparity has meant for the citizens of
Mexico, and how it has impacted migration patterns from Mexico to the United States.
Under NAFTA, Mexico s per capita GDP (Gross Domestic Product) has grown twenty
two percent, from $10,238 in 1980 to $14,400 in 2010, an increase which is less than
the growth rate average for all other Latin American countries, which has hovered at
thirty three percent during that thirty year period. In that same period, the United
States has seen a GDP growth well above that of Mexico, at sixty six percent.
Furthermore, enacting NAFTA has provided Mexico the slowest rate of economic
growth out of all previous economic strategies since the 1930 s; under NAFTA,
Mexico s GDP grew at a meager .89 percent per year. Still, some economists consider
NAFTA a success, due to the GDP growth in the United States and Canada. What these
economists fail to consider is the fact that the jobs created in Mexico are not luxurious, or

Introduction
Humbro PLC have been successful with their Olympic themed board game, they have
decided to take on a business venture of an expansion where they would be able to
create a new product which can capitalise on the next football world cup. The finance
director has been absent on a long term leave which has led to a lack of clarity and
understanding of the various financial options among the other board members within
the company. The managing director has asked for some financial advice and if this
expansion will go ahead. In this report I will analyse Humbro PLCs financial
information give my conclusion followed by my own recommendations for the company
and if the expansion is to go ahead.

Identified sources of finance in the statement of financial position
Debenture
A debenture is the most common form of long term loan that can be taken by Humbro.
Debentures are usually loans that are repayable on a fixed date this is in the statement
of financial position under the heading Non current liabilities (8,000) in both 2011 and
2012. Most debentures pay a fixed rate of interest which you can also see in the
statement of financial position under current liabilities titled debenture interest (800) for
year 2011 and 2012. The main advantage of a debenture to companies is the fact that
they have a lower interest rate than overdrafts. They are usually repayable at a date far
off in the future.
Retained earnings
Retained earnings are profits generated by a company that are not distributed to
shareholders as dividends but are either reinvested into the business or kept as a
reserve for specific objectives these being to pay off debt or purchase a capital asset. As
you can see in Humbros statement of financial position under capital and reserves they
have retained earnings at 9,100 in 2011 and 10,500 in year 2012 this has shown an
increase which means there is more capital available for growth and higher returns on
investments and shareholder equity.

  • 2. The Earth Is A Collection Of Eight Short Stories By Jhumpa... Unaccustomed Earth is a collection of eight short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri that focuses on members of Bengali family dealing with either America or England. These are the people who have migrated from India to have a better life. The stories deal with the life of these immigrants and their children who try to bring balance between their culture and a new country. Jhumpa Lahiri discusses the relationship shared by the couples in stories and how it differs from the relationship their children share with their spouse. Although couples in the stories deal with different problems, they share this sense of importance of lovein common. This is seen in stories like Unaccustomed Earth, Hell Heaven and A choice of Accommodations. In Unaccustomed Earth we will look at the relationship shared between Ruma s parents, in Hell Heaven we will look at relationship shared between Usha s parents (Shymal and Aparna) and in A choice of accommodations we will see what sort of relationship Amit and Megan share. In Unaccustomed Earth we see that Ruma s father visits her after his trip from Europe. Ruma has not seen her father since seven months. There are some presumptions about her father s visit that turns out the other way round. She taught that her father might want to move in with her after her mother s death, but it turns out that her father had no such intentions. This story brings forth the relationship that Ruma s parents shared. Their parents were very different from each other in

  • 5. Symbolism In Sweet Potato Pie 1.A) I believe that the phrases the dry September of the dirt roads, grassless yards of the shanty town, and a brilliant splash of sunny yellow against the dust contribute to the atmosphere by revealing specific details of the setting. When the author uses the phrases the dry September of the dirt roads, and sunny yellow against the dust, it portrays the setting as dry and dusty. This is further supported by the phrase grassless yards, which allows the reader to picture the landscape as bare, dry ground. The term shanty town means an area consisting of a large amount of roughly made houses. B) The atmosphere of the story is impoverished. C) The selected phrases contribute to the atmosphere because, as mentioned above, they include terms such as shanty town, dirt roads, and against the dust that reveal the setting as a poor, dry landscape. This, in turn, contributes to the overall atmosphere of poverty.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The use of flashbacks as a literary device is similar to those in Sweet Potato Pie because they both involve the main character looking back at the place where he or she grew up. They are also similar because of the fact that the main characters past home was not very financially stable. This is supported by the use of the term shanty, meaning crude dwelling, in both of the stories. However, they are also different in the fact that Buddy lived alone with his family in Sweet Potato Pie, while the main character in Marigolds lived in a community. 3. The setting of the story does appear relevant to the plot of the story. I believe this because the main character lives in a poor community, which would definitely influence the story and add to the various problems and conflicts of the

I have no specific reason why I picked this song, besides the fact that I admired Beethoven when I was young. When I listened to the piece the first time I was surprised by its dynamics. In my head I have this preconceived idea that classical music was soft. I did a little research on the classical era and discovered; that music was an important part of society at the time and Beethoven was one of the top composers at the time. I was also informed that the all classical musicwas dynamic, the song could be quiet one minute then loud the next. In the beginning of SymphonyNo. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, Choral : IV. • 8. How Far Was the First World War the Main Cause of the Fall... How far was the First World War the main cause of the fall of the Romanovs in February 1917? It could be argued that the First World War, which began in 1914 was the main reason for the fall of Tsarism in February 1917. However, there is more evidence to suggest that it was not in fact the war that lead to the downfall of the Tsar, but other factors such as the lack of effective leadership by the Tsar and the fact that the Duma, his appointed government, had little power to make change. One important reason why it could be seen that the First World War was the reason for the fall of Tsarism is the fact that in 1915 Nicholas left the Winter Palace and took direct command of the army. This meant he was blamed solely for Russias ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In October 1905 he published the October Manifesto, accepting the creation of a legislative parliament or duma, which pleased the liberals. However, then in April 1906, he published the fundamental laws which stated that he still had overall control over Russia. Also, throughout the years 1905 1917 there were a number of dumas, all set up and subsequently dissolved by the Tsar when he believed they were getting to powerful. Also, in early 1917 236 of the duma s 422 deputies formed the Progressive Bloc along with other supporters of the Tsar, such as the Kadets, Octobrists, Nationalists. The Bloc tried to persuade the Tsar to make concessions in order to retain his power but typically he was unwilling to listen. Listening to the Bloc at this point could have saved Nicholas and therefore the rule of Tsarism but his inability to trust his ministers and take their advice meant he his supporters quickly became opposers, weakening his rule at this crucial time. Another reason for the fall of Tsarism in 1917 that was highlighted but not caused by the war is the fact that Russia was a difficult country to run. Russia s economy was backward compared to those of other Western countries, 4/5 of it s population were peasants, who were more often than not illiterate and lived in severe poverty. Although by 1917, improvements had been made to the

Corporate Social Responsibility And Human Rights CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBLITY Nicholas S Jones ACED 4050 Valdosta State University March 20, 2016 CORPORATE SOCIAL RESRPONSIBILITY (CSR) Introduction Today, the world faces numerous challenges ranging from dreadful environmental conditions through poverty and human rights, to energy and resource supply issues. Social responsibility policy focuses on using the capabilities of a business to improve lives and sustain our planet through contributions to local communities and society at large. In other words, a business should fully realize it s potential as an organization to make a better world through corporate self regulation assimilated into a business module. CSR and Human Rights The global community expects companies to operate with due admiration for human rights. Beyond meeting regulatory requirements and social expectations in areas in which they operate, by proactively presenting more rigorous international standards such as the United Nations Global Compact, companies will reinforce their commitment to human rights. In 1998 the Secretary General of the UN, declared that he was building a more solid relationship with the business community. Hydrogen Bonding A hydrogen bond is the electromagnetic attractive interaction between polar molecules in which hydrogen (H) is bound to a highly electronegative atom, such as nitrogen (N), oxygen (O) or fluorine (F). The name hydrogen bond is something of a misnomer, as it is not a true bond but a particularly strong dipole dipole attraction, and should not be confused with a covalent bond. These hydrogen bond attractions can occur between molecules (intermolecular) or within different parts of a single molecule (intramolecular).[1] The hydrogen bond (5 to 30 kJ /mole) is stronger than a van der Waals interaction, but weaker than covalent or ionic bonds. This type of bond can occur in inorganic molecules such as water and in organic molecules like DNA ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Involvement of Canonical Insulin To look at the involvement of canonical insulin/PI3K/Akt pathway in adipocytes leptin secretion the study measured it using insulin resistant DIO mice with HFD and CD fed mice, with the HFD mice gaining higher body and fat mass. Cell lysate of both HFD and CD fed mice were subjected to western blotting and it was observed that phospho Akt level in adipocytes from HFD fed mice was lower than the CD fed mice after insulinstimulation, showing insulin resistancein the HFD fed mice. Also, the fasting leptinlevel of HFD fed mice is ten times higher than the CD fed mice. Refeeding, resulted in no significant increase in plasma leptin levels in HFD fed mice after two hours, whereas with the CD fed mice there was a significant increase in plasma leptin levels. This implies that leptin production and/or secretion after refeeding is impaired in HFD fed mice. To verify that there is a decrease in systematic leptin level, the researchers isolated primary adipocytes from HFD and CD fed mice and then determined ISLS in ex vivo. The result was that ISLS was significantly lower in primary adipocytes from HFD fed mice. This supports the hypothesis that impaired ISLS in HFD fed mice in vivo and ex vivo was dependent on PI3K/Akt activation. Furthermore, there is an essential role of PI3K/Akt in regulating ISLS in primary adipocytes as seen when blocking PI3K activity with wortmannin. This significantly inhibits ISLS without affecting basal leptin secretion. Also, AKT 1/2 inhibitor Akti

Between 1819, the ending of the First Seminole War, and 1835, the beginning of the Second, the United States government did everything within its power to not only remove the Natives Americans from its borders, but did so through seditious and deceptive legislature. It was during this time that the expansion of the power of the president and a complete disregard for foreign affairs characterized the union and their willingness to use extralegal means to achieve their desired goals. This era remains one of the saddest affairs in American history, and provides insight into how the executive branch was able to attain new power during the era of Jackson. In order to understand the significance of the events preceding the Second Seminole War, one must first examine the First Seminole War. Frustrated with Seminole protection of runaway slaves, Andrew Jackson and more than three thousand men entered northern Florida in 1816 and began to decimate Seminole populations. Despite most of these campaigns being unsanctioned by the United States government and protested by the British and the Spanish, Jackson was received as a war hero throughout the nation and protected from punitive measures. The refusal of the government to punish Jackson for the injustices led to foreign hostilities with both Britain and Spain. The Adam Onis Treaty of 1819

Binder explains that our founding fathers created a bureaucratic system that competes within itself to serve its own interest and protect our constitution from tyranny. This statement is so true I cannot argue whether it is true or false, but I would like to reinstate a few points Binders statement make. The pilgrims came to America because of the religious persecution in The British Empire in which tyranny engulfed the people. I can see why the founding fathers when writing the constitution held so dearly their fear of tyranny because they had experienced it firsthand. I believe that our political system has held well to these principals and its core values have remained the same since the day the constitution was signed in 1776. Binder then states the main issues of the Congress of 1965 66, health care, environment, civil rights, transportation, and education statutes (Binder, 34). Binder is pointing out that the Congress of 1965 66 under President Lyndon B. Johnson was the most productive Congress of all time. I would have to agree with Binder this Congress faced great challenges like issues of civil rights. People might think that gridlock only exists today, given the many conflicts that have raged between Congress and President Obama and led to several government shutdowns. However, the author points out how gridlock also existed during President Bush s presidency, which ended up being the main reason he broke his promise not to raise taxes and decided instead to agree with congressional Democrats to do so. President Clinton s presidency was also characterized by much gridlock with congressional Republicans, which explains why he was unable to pass his healthcare reform act through

A Literature Of Place Barry Lopez Summary Summary In A Literature of Place , author Barry Lopez begins his work by stating that a kind of writing called nature writing or landscape writing has begun to receive more attention, creating the belief that it was a relatively new type of writing (at the time). It was actually quite the opposite. According to Lopez, writing about the impact that nature and location has on culture is one of the oldest, and perhaps most singular, threads in American writing. The real topic of nature writing, Lopez says, is not nature but the evolving structure of communities from which nature has been removed, often as a consequence of modern economic development. Lopez also states that it is his belief that a human imagination is shaped by the environment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, Lopez s imagination was shaped by the abnormal nature of water in a drought stricken California valley, the sound of wind rustling the leaves of eucalyptus trees, the tilled earth of crop fields, the beautiful sunsets over alfalfa fields, the smell of flowers near the orchard, and the aftermath of a Pacific storm ravaging a coastal beach. He then writes that it s important to become intimate with a place, meaning that instead of simply observing your surroundings and watching the world go by, you should find a special place in your heart for a certain area that s special to you in some way. He s essentially saying that your should take this place into your very being on a spiritual level. Finally, Lopez states that he and many others wonder why people have become so anxious over undeveloped land. The answer is simple. These places hold a special place in their hearts, and they don t want to see them go. It may be more important now to enter into an ethical and reciprocal relationship with everything around us than to continue to work toward the sort of control of the physical world that, until recently, we aspired to, (A Literature of Place) says Lopez. He ends his writing by saying this; We keep each other alive with our stories. We need to share them, as much as we need to share food. We also require for our health the presence of good

With the weather slowly warming melting the snow on the mountains causing water flow the scenery was just gorgeous, with many rocks having a bright reflective look caused by the sun and water interacting. This scenery was just perfect for a climb up the fall. As we climbed we all took notice of just how pretty the mountain was. The North American Free Trade Agreement The North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, which was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on December 8th, 1993, went into effect on January 1st, 1994. By December of 1994, Mexico underwent a deep economic crisis, which saw the devaluation of the Mexican peso, a deterioration of wages, rampant unemployment, as well as extensive personal and corporate bankruptcies that led to the poverty and malnutrition of many of its citizens. As we explore the economic effects that NAFTA has had on Mexico, we must consider what economic disparity has meant for the citizens of Mexico, and how it has impacted migration patterns from Mexico to the United States. Under NAFTA, Mexico s per capita GDP (Gross Domestic Product) has grown twenty two percent, from $10,238 in 1980 to $14,400 in 2010, an increase which is less than the growth rate average for all other Latin American countries, which has hovered at thirty three percent during that thirty year period. Identified sources of finance in the statement of financial position Debenture A debenture is the most common form of long term loan that can be taken by Humbro. Debentures are usually loans that are repayable on a fixed date this is in the statement of financial position under the heading Non current liabilities (8,000) in both 2011 and 2012. Most debentures pay a fixed rate of interest which you can also see in the statement of financial position under current liabilities titled debenture interest (800) for year 2011 and 2012. The main advantage of a debenture to companies is the fact that they have a lower interest rate than overdrafts. They are usually repayable at a date far off in the future. Retained earnings Retained earnings are profits generated by a company that are not distributed to shareholders as dividends but are either reinvested into the business or kept as a reserve for specific objectives these being to pay off debt or purchase a capital asset. As you can see in Humbros statement of financial position under capital and reserves they have retained earnings at 9,100 in 2011 and 10,500 in year 2012 this has shown an increase which means there is more capital available for growth and higher returns on investments and shareholder equity.
