Running across a busy city street is never a good idea as this situation can only lead
to car accidents in which the pedestrian will always be the loser. This risky maneuver

What
An example of when I displayed resilience was when I was assigned a unit as a
hospital volunteer and took on different roles that what I anticipated. My
supervisor was on maternity leave for the duration of my rotation, so I was placed
at the nurses station to aid them with tasks as needed. The difficulty I had in this
role was the ambiguity when I came for my shifts and feelings of being a burden to
the staff by not having designated tasks. Rather than continue these negative
thoughts, I came up with a new strategy to be of help by reducing the staff s
workloads or prepping paperwork in advance to allow them more time to focus on
the patients. Additionally, I sought feedback on areas I could improve on to not only
help the unit staff, but also patients and their visitors. These tactics are similar to
what we discussed in class pertaining to developing our growth mindset. By
enforcing these strategies, I was able to contribute to a more positive and rewarding
atmosphere during my shifts with everyone I met.
From a different outcome, an instance I did not display resilience was during my time
as an executive member for a student club in helping facilitate camaraderie amongst
the team. As one of the external executives, I observed frustration and conflict of
interests that resulted in a negative perception between some team members and
targeted outcomes for meetings. What I failed to do in these instances was to take
initiative in establishing feedback channels that would promote efficient
communication between everyone. A few strategies discussed from class regarding
growth mindset that would have been critical in helping me address this situation are:
praising everyone on the team s progress and efforts, and focusing on the future
while learning from feedback. The key aspect of focusing on the future while not
dwelling on the past was utilizing the component of getting feedback and learning
from our mistakes to come back stronger as a team rather than remain divided on a
blame game.

Be a sport, young people are admonished. Play fair. Play by the rules. Everywhere in
the developed world, sports are raised high up on social pedestals as redeeming
activities that characterize the best of the human spirit, fair competition, and physical
achievement. Society welcomes athleticism due largely to anticipation of the
wholesome and upstanding values with which it is associated. Character is said to be
built through participation in sports. While certainly there are elements of these high
expectations and standards for athletes, there too has been a steady erosion of these
traditional foundations and nowhere is this more evident than in collegiate sports.
Intercollege sports are big business, and those associated with it take a very business
like attitude toward the games (Eitzen Sage, 1978). The driver in intercollegiate
sports is competition, just as it is in business (Eitzen Sage, 1978). And, as in business,
unfair advantage is translated into competitive edge. Responsibility morphs into
power. In such an environment, the notion of cheating becomes blurred (Eitzen Sage,

Over the years the perception of women in sport has changed considerably. In this
course we have viewed several films all dealing with the depiction of female athletes
in an attempt to gauge society s current perception of women in sport. I will briefly
summarize each film and the main themes of the films before providing a description
of the female athlete which I will infer from commonalities between the films.
The first film we watched was a documentary entitled, Dare to Compete; it provided a
brief history of women in film, focusing primarily on American women in sport from

The third film we watched was, Remember the Titans. Remember the Titans, traces
the racial integration of a Virginian high school football team in the 1960 s as well
as the racial integration of the high school. While this film is about a male football
team and women are minor characters within the film it shows how sport can unite
people from different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds
The fourth film we watched was, Girlfight; a film about a Latina who lives in the
ghetto and becomes a boxer. The protagonist s struggle to be taken seriously as a
female boxer, to find people who will train her and compete with her is one of the
major themes of this film. However, this film examines not only the protagonist s
role as an athlete, but her home life, love interest and inner turmoil as she learns to
control and focus her aggressive personality.
The fifth and final film we watched was, Love and Basketball, a film that primarily
traces the coming of age of a man and a woman, two childhood friends and
basketball fanatics who both pursue professional careers in basketball while
focusing primarily on the female protagonist. The main conflict in this film had less
to do with the female protagonist struggling for approval from her parents and
acceptance by society than any of the other films we ve seen in this class. Instead, it
