1. Good Essay Hook
Crafting an essay on the subject of "Good Essay Hook" may seem deceptively simple at first
glance, yet as one delves into the intricacies of this task, the complexity becomes apparent. The
challenge lies not only in elucidating the importance of a compelling essay hook but also in
exemplifying diverse techniques to engage readers right from the outset.
To begin with, defining what constitutes a "good" hook becomes a nuanced endeavor. It's not
merely about a catchy phrase or a witty anecdote; it's about understanding the audience, tailoring
the hook to the essay's tone and purpose, and seamlessly connecting it to the broader narrative.
The delicate balance between being attention-grabbing and staying relevant can be elusive,
requiring a writer to navigate through a myriad of possibilities.
Moreover, the landscape of effective hooks is vast and varied, spanning from rhetorical questions
and quotes to startling statistics and vivid descriptions. Selecting the most appropriate hook for a
given context demands a keen understanding of the subject matter and an acute awareness of the
reader's expectations.
The difficulty intensifies when considering the need for originality. With countless essays being
written on similar topics, standing out becomes a formidable task. Crafting a hook that is both
unique and resonant requires not only creativity but also an in-depth exploration of the subject to
unearth unconventional perspectives or overlooked aspects.
Furthermore, the iterative nature of essay writing adds another layer of complexity. Revising and
refining the hook to perfection is a meticulous process, demanding an astute eye for detail and a
willingness to experiment with different approaches. The iterative cycle may involve seeking
feedback, revisiting the thesis, and reevaluating the hook's effectiveness in the broader context
of the essay.
In conclusion, the challenge of writing an essay on the topic of a "Good Essay Hook" extends
beyond the surface simplicity of the subject. It entails a nuanced understanding of audience
dynamics, a careful selection of hook types, a pursuit of originality, and a commitment to the
iterative process of refinement. Navigating these complexities requires skill, patience, and a
genuine passion for the art of effective writing.

Seamus Heaney s Storm on the Island and Walt Whitmans Patrolling
Barnegat which were written in 1966 and 1856 respectively are two classical poems
describing vividly the horror and insecurity experienced by human s during a wild

around each writer s description of a storm but the differences are mainly due to the

In contrast to this Whitman s outlook to a storm is one that suggests that he wants
the reader to be aware of the threatening and aggressive nature of a storm,
Waves, air, midnight, their savagest trinity lashing . In my opinion this line sums up
everything about Whitman s attitude to the storm. In spite of the fact that each poet s
feelings towards the storm are primarily different there are subtle similarities in their
thoughts about the storm. From a personal standpoint I believe that there is a
underlying feeling that both poets share, this is that they both accept and
acknowledge that man cannot combat the power of nature and that all humans are
condemned to the fact that all we can do is find the best means to adapt to natures
elements.
With regards to the structure of each poem, Whitman s Patrolling
Barnegat is a sonnet despite the fact that it doesn t abide by all the rules associated
with sonnets. Heaney s Storm on the Island is a blank verse poem with 10 syllables
in each line.
The tone and rhythm of each poem reflects the poet s own personal preference on
how they wished to write and construct their own poem, unsurprisingly the tone and
rhythm of each poem is uniquely different.
The rhythm of Storm on the Island is one that flows steady in a controlled manner
and the tone compliments this as it is written in a laid back relaxed style. This
relaxed tone gives me

At first with the Taliban Killings did not happen as much, but as time went by they
increased continuously. Killings began with sieges, which lasted for a few days.
Within those few day thousand of people would die. There was also an increase in
suicide bombers. The Taliban would also bomb power stations and that would for
there to be no electricity to cook with, forcing the people to starve and go hungry. At
some points people would just kill to kill in the taliban, for instance, a man was not

him. Malala found it very hard to understand to the fact of why they were killing

Shea Amjum was a journalist who was interviewing Malala and was figuring out if

The Taliban had put out ads saying, These two are spreading secularism and should

protective over her. Malala would run into the house at night and lock all the doors

6. The Plague Of Capitalism And Offshore Banking In The...
Benjamin Franklin once famously said in his private correspondence, ...in this
world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes . Benjamin Franklin
was correct, taxation is inevitable, but the extent of taxation can be said to be close
to nothing when banking offshore. Offshore banking has become a plague in
America, crippling small business, enlarging the wallets of top corporations and
keeping politicians afloat on a raft of liquid money . Not only is this plague very
selective in its choice of victims, it directly affects the middle to low class, working
American dramatically. Offshore banking extorts the basis of United States economics

However, as the lack of confidence seems to be prevalent in many different parts of

to suggest that his relationship with his mother probably has a lot to do with his
current confidence and self esteem issues. It seems as though she still has a lot of
control over her son and he considers her thoughts and feelings above everything
else. I believe he is always searching for her approval and respect and maybe this is
another reason for not asking his girlfriend to marry him as his mother may not
approve. I believe there is a secondary gain for Mr X in that if he increases his
confidence enough to apply for the manager s job and gets it he will then be in a
position where he will feel as if he is a good enough prospect to propose to his
girlfriend. If she were to say yes then that opens up a whole new set of issues
regarding his family and specifically his mother. Will his mother approve of his

that he will then have other family related responsibilities which may take priority

Sources of literature refer to prefabrication, off site construction, pre assembly and
modularisation concepts either respectively or collectively, (Haas et al., 2000).
Prefabrication Haas et al (2000), prefabrication normally involves a single skill or
trade, such as electrical, or piping, and this can be defined as a manufacturing
process, which generally takes place at a specialized facility, in which various
materials are joined to form a component part of a final installation (Tatum et al.,
1987). Components manufactured off site and is not a complete system can be
referred to as prefabricated components. Furthermore Jaillon Poon (2009) proceed to

The components of preassembly may be completed at the job site eg specialized
factory, in a remote location other than the place of final installation. Usually
preassembly often contains portions of systems, and work that is from a variety of
crafts is naturally necessary for the installation. It is considered to be a combination
of prefabrication and modularisation and may make use of fabricated components
completed off site and then assembled near the site. These units can then be installed,
similar to modules (on site). (Klerk, 2013) It is apparent that no single definition
exists for these concepts but it does however seem that these terms all adhere to a
general theme, specifically: Components manufactured in a controlled environment,
either on or off site and then assembled at the project location. (Klerk, 2013)
Industrialisation this term is used to try incorporate all three aspects of offsite
construction work which is; modularization, prefabrication, and preassembly. The
industrialization process can be described as an investment in equipment, facilities,
and technology with the intention of an increase in output, a decrease in manual
labour, and improving quality of work (Warszawski 1990). The process uses the
concepts of manufacturing and applies them to construction. It also implies the use of
a fully integrated and automated project process to a certain extent. The term
industrialization was commonly used in the 1970 s to define all forms of

Golf over time According to Robin Williams golf was created by Scottish people
who wanted a deathly hard game. However at some point people realized that the
game was more than a funny way of putting a ball in a hole. Over time, as the sport
became more popular, people have found different ways of enhancing the game. As
technology improved people found ways to utilize higher technology materials and
also introduced many new systems to the game of golf. Yet some people say that golf
has not changed due to technology, they say that it is still a matter of getting the
ball into the hole. Technology has changed the game of golf. The materials for
golf balls have changed over time. The golf ball has been through many changes
over time and can now be fit to the player s ability. Golf balls used to be built with
wood, then leather and feather; but now they are being produced with cast
thermoset urethane that is 0.03 inches thick and they all have dimple patterns.

a golf ball that is multi layered and made of high technology materials rather than a

Gridlocks stop copious bills from being passed, this results and leads to benefit the

bills get passed due to the high amount of gridlocks occurring within the

14. Anti Intellectualism By Richard Hofstadter
What is Anti Intellectualism? According to Dictionary.com, Anti Intellectualism is
defined as being hostile toward intellectuals and the modern academic, artistic, social,
religious worlds as well as other theories that are associated with them. Although
Richard Hofstadter s Anti Intellectualism in American Life won the 1964 Pulitzer
Prize, it is now almost fifty fives out of date. Not to mention the ideas within the book
are seen as suggesting a type of self defensive justification rather than an actual deep
investigation. Hoftstader used the aftermath of McCarthyism and how there were
wide range witch hunts among the academics and progressives and how that is
influenced by the reform, socialists and communist movements between the World
Wars. Applying McCarthyism, Hoftstader looks at the tension from four different
perspectives: religion, politics, business, self help culture, and education. Taking into
consideration the year the book was written, each angle is explored from the colonial
period up until the 1950s. Throughout the introduction, Hofstadter makes it clear that
the purpose of the book is to shed a little light on our cultural problems. Focusing on
the social and political phenomenon of anti intellectualism Hofstadter applies broad
abstractions to social issues. He explains how applications of the abstracts presented
by intellectuals can ultimately pose a threat to the social and political ambitions of
certain and specific individuals. Because of this,
15. Macbeth -Schizophrenia in Macbeth Essay example
In Shakespeare s Macbeth, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth both show signs of what
would today be diagnosed as symptoms of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is defined as
a psychotic disorder characterized by loss of contact with the environment, by
noticeable deterioration in the level of functioning in everyday life, and by
disintegration of personality expressed as disorder of feeling, thought, and conduct.
There are three major symptoms of the disorder; not being able to distinguish the
difference between fantasy and reality, incoherent conversations, and withdrawal
physically and emotionally. The most common and most well known symptom of
schizophreniais when people cannot distinguish between what is real and what is not.

It became all they thought about and their whole being revolved around it. When
Lady Macbeth finds that Macbeth has been prophesized to be king, she does not
believe he is capable of fulfilling the prophecy alone. So, she says to herself, Hie
thee hither, that I may pour my spirits in thine ear, and chastise with the valor of my
tongue which fate and metaphysical aid doth seem to have thee crowned withal.
(I.5.23 28) Macbeth becomes so passionate about becoming the king that he killed
anyone who could possibly take the throne away from him, even the king, Duncan. I

Macbeth shows several symptoms of schizophrenia. These symptoms are
techniques that Shakespeare uses to create the idea that Macbeth has a mental
illness. Macbeth s main symptom is detachment from reality. While contemplating
killing Banquo to secure his fate, Macbeth begins to see an imaginary dagger in
front of him. He asks, Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible to feeling as to sight, or
art thou but a dagger of the mind, a false creation, proceeding from the heat
oppressed brain? (II.2.35 39) Then after Banquo is dead, Macbeth believes he sees
his ghost during a dinner with the country s nobility. Macbeth says, The table s full.
(III.4.46) Lennox points to the seat where Macbeth sees Banqo s ghost sitting and
tells him that it is empty. Puzzled, Macbeth asks, Where? (III.4.48) He

17. America s Political Situation Of The World Essay
To Begin the World Over Again
In 1770 s political situation of the world was so suitable for United States in order to
establish its own government as a country and determine a well functioning foreign
policy to protect United States interest. Even though European countries such United
Kingdom, France, Spain want to American continent as an open land to exploit, Tom
Paine suggest an idea that United States should secure for independence and set up
republic. According to Paine, people in the United States are chosen to create new
world order and commerce to change the history.
The way to approach trade and relationship with colonized countries also gives an
advantage to the United States. Therefore, United States maximized its profit by
trading colonized countries directly. This shows United States does not constitute
common idea of trade, which was mercantilism at that time, yet United States selects
direct and relatively free trade with other countries. So, United States begin to change
trade pattern in the world.
After Westphalia, concepts that are related to states and international order increased
the importance of notion of state. States attached importance to their own domestic
policies and international interest. States pay more attention on diplomacy and
negotiation rather than war. War become highest risk for states to keep their
international interest. They invest their armies to use them as a psychologic weapon

Held et al also argue that with the spread of interconnection of crime across national
boarders, it creates new opportunities and forms of global crime such as transnational
organized crime, IP crime and human smuggling and trafficking (Held, et al.,
1999:162). For instance, Castells points out that the Western societies acts as the
demand side in a global criminal economy, they are in a high demand of drugs and
prostitutes, which can be supplied and produced in a third world drug producing
countries such as Columbia (Castells, 1998, cited in Puniskis, 2010:239).
Furthermore, apart from the reasons that these crimes are prevalent in the Western
nations, it becomes a controversial issue as it violates the international laws regarding
humanity. For example, human smuggling and trafficking is an illegal sale of human
beings that contains exploitation and coercion. According to Leman and Janssens, it
is apparent that human trafficking is a violation of human rights in the way that it
requires exploitation of human such as prostitution, non voluntary form of sexual
behavior, forced labor or services as well as slavery or slavery like conditions (Leman

Written by Barbara Kingsolver, The Bean Trees contains characters who demonstrate
how living creatures are able to find methods of growing and transforming, despite
unusual arrangements or lifestyle. Throughout the novel, in the chapters The One to
Get Away and Dream Angels the use of motifs are greatly emphasized. Rebirth is one
of the two important motifs, as the pattern of life and death is repeated in the novel.
Frequently, this theme is connected with dualities: when one member of a pair
passes, the other gains life force. Newt Hardbine represents as some sort of double
for Taylor, in the chapter The One to Get Away . For example, in school, people
could barely tell them different from each other, and their lives appeared to move...

The dried up seed that, once buried, becomes a living thing, symbolizes her own life
experience. For instance, the night blooming cereus that Edna Poppy brings, which
appears up on page 240, to Taylor and Lou Ann before Taylor makes her trip to
Oklahoma serves as an indicator, representing the transient quality to the characters
chances. The wisteria vines speak to the cooperative connections that predominant the
novel, and most importantly, the development of bean trees speaks to the
development of Turtle Greer and her development all through the novel. Bean, (128)
Turtle s first word, symbolizes the guarantee that, similar to a dried up seed that
grows, an emotionally or physically wounded woman may flourish if sufficiently
given consideration. The bean trees, another name for the wisteria vine that Turtle
spots in Dog Doo Park, symbolize change, a spot of life amidst infertility. The bean
trees have a cooperative association with bugs called rhizobia, which climb up and
down the wisteria vine s roots and give a system that transfer nutrients. This mutual
aid symbolizes the assistance and adoration individuals give each other. The bean
trees, similar to individuals, thrive with a system of support. Taylor s interest with
seeds and vegetables is also an example of of the cycle of eternal rest and new

NO MORE EPILEPSY START USING RIVOTRIL
Are you suffering from epilepsy and panic disorder? The main occurrence of these
problems is the occurrence of the seizures. A seizure is a brain s abnormal electrical
activity in which during a seizure the brain cells will fire uncontrollably up to four
times rather than the normal rate which will temporarily affect the behavior of the
person like thinking and feelings will have a strange change. The main reasons for
the occurrence are brain injuries , abnormal metabolic process , structural
abnormalities in brain blood vessels and due to high fever in case of children. The
solution for the cure of this disorder is to Buy rivotril online.
The seizures are mainly classified into two types . The first

Furthermore, Disney also develops Judy as an mirror which reflects our spirit of
fighting against inequality. At beginning of the movie, it uses many terms to
emphasize the underlying issue of inequality such as Prey , Predators , and Savage
. These terms reveal that there will be an problem between these two groups of
animals, though everyone seems living under harmony to the eye. After Judy
moved to Zootopia and started her first day at work, she realizes that the city is not
as welcoming and accepting as she thought. Her boss, Chief Bogo does not treat
her as same as other male colleagues but simply asks her to write out 100 parking
tickets in one day. Other officers are assigned different kinds of missions to
complete. Judy s disillusion then fades away because she thinks that she is able
contribute to the city more than just signing tickets. Hence, she decides to prove
herself to them and fight for more rights; therefore she completes 200 parking tickets
in one day. Also, she pays full attention to anything that seems suspicious to her. She
will not miss any chance to show her ability. On the first day Judy meets Nick Wilde,
her future partner, she follows this suspicious fox but finds out that Nick is the victim
of another animal s discriminationin the Iced pop shop. She stands out for him even
though she knows that traditionally foxes are sly and not reliable. Although she was
conflicted at first, she then turns to overcome the prejudice in her mind and decides to
22. Similarities Between Birches And Birches
During his life, Robert Frost, the icon of American literature, wrote many poems that
limned the picturesque American landscape. His mostly explicated poems Birches
and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening reflect his young manhood in the rural
New England. Both of these poems are seemingly straightforward but in reality, they
deal with a higher level of complexity and philosophy. Despite the difference in style
and message, Birches and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening are loaded with
vivid imagery and symbolism that metaphorically depict the return to nature and
childhood, the struggle between reality and imagination and also life and death.
Frost wrote Birches in a blank verse structure, but Stopping by Woods is basically...

The playful boy in Birches is imaginary, he clearly represents a younger version of
Frost himself. The boy enjoyed swinging the birch trees by riding them over and
over again / until he took the stiffness out of them (30 31). This visual image
illustrates the victory of the poet in moving to his own imaginary world; an
ambiguous catastrophic world that he allows himself to attain without any
boundaries. Consequently, Frost draws an extremely strong image of ice shattering
and avalanching on the snowy ground till a point you d think the inner dome of
heaven had fallen (13). The pliable quality of the birch authorized the poet to
become released. In The Study Guide on Robert Frost s Birches , it is claimed that
this line (13) signals the beginning of a retreat from reality (Poetry for Students, Vol.
13). In addition, comparing the birches in the ice storm to girls on hands and
knees that throw their hair (19) symbolizes the captive position of the speaker who
is getting older as the birches, year after year. Even though the poet feels free when
he is a swinger of birches, he reached a statement that Earth is the right place for
love (53); climbing the trees and knowing about coming back again is an example of
escape and transcendence towards
23. The Process Of Top Down Network Design
Introduction I chose this particular topic considering that it s not easy, and that it
will enhance the skills I already have. The topic selection should not matter that
much, since the topic will merely gauge to see what I will learn, and also
challenge my ability to find solutions to various problems that I will encounter
throughout this course. This will begin with week one and ending with week
seven, provided with a business network scenario I will decide based on the
assumptions and requirements to either upgrade or design a network from scratch.
My reasoning for this is simple, that if I apply what I am suppose to learn in this
course, I should be able to quickly apply the process of top down network design,

As soon as these base elements are identified, it is easier to build these elements as
new system. A top down design is also known as a stepwise design, or as Cisco
documentation refers to the Plan Design Implement Operate Optimize (PDIOO),
(Oppenheimer 7) as a set of phases in the life cycle of a network. What I hope to
learn by doing this project is that given business goals and constraints, apply the top
down network design process and design a network based on those business goals and
constraints. From the book, at least from chapter 1, that the top down process brings
together information on goals, but also the importance of using systematic methods
for network design. Using these well defined, systematic methods will benefit in

Chapter 2, I hope to learn the importance of analyzing the customer s business needs,
his style, his biases, and his technical expertise. Understanding how to work with a
customer will assist to understand the budget and schedule for the network design
project. The bottom line for me to succeed, I need to understand my client s corporate
organizational structure. Understanding the corporate structure will aid in analyzing
data flow and develop a network topology, which usually parallels the corporate
structure. It will aid in
24. Compare And Contrast Essay On Hillary Cinton
The two canadities I picked are Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush. Hillary Cinton is a
Democrat who is running for president. Some of her strengths are she has nearly
one hundred percent name recogntition. She also has a built in base of support
among working class women. Her strongest supporters are working class women.
Other strong supporters are people who were big fans of Bill Clintonwhen he was in
office. Some weakness she has iss trying to appeal to the coalition of blacks and
young college educated white voters who supported obama. She also declared her
presidency in 2007 but was defeated by Barrack Obama. She also needs to be able
to represent the future and not the past. Also she s a trained attorney; former secretary
of State in the Obama administration; former senator from New York; and former...

Ever since she announced that she is running she has kept quiet not saying much.
This may be a very good stratagie. Her campaign strategy seems to be a lot more laid
back. She seems to have more self effacing humor. I think that she has a very good
likelihood of winning. She is very well known and is doing really good in the polls.
The second candidate I choose was Jeb Bush. Jeb Bush, the former governor of
Florida, has announced he is entering the race for the Republican presidential
nomination. A lot of his supporters will be from right of center republicans.
Another group that will be major support will be the concervatives who are
concerned with choosing a nomine that is electable. Republicans are ready to be
back in office. He really needs to win over these states:Iowa, New Hampshire, South
Carolina or Nevada. He also has money and can afford to put ads on telvison and
other types of way to promote his campaighn. Also more than any other Republican
candidate, Mr. Bush is running a campaign more toward the
25. Analysis Of Mountains Beyond Mountains
For my summer reading, I chose to read Mountains Beyond Mountains: the Quest
of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World. I chose this book without
reading the description and mainly based my selection on the great reviews for this
book online as well as the fact that the author, Tracy Kidder, had won a Pulitzer
Prize in the past. Ultimately, this book turned out to be as remarkable as the reviews
stated it was.
2. Paul Farmer had a very unusual upbringing in Massachusetts, Alabama, and
Florida. What specific elements from his childhood and family life prepared Farmer
for his current life? How has your upbringing influenced your own choices and goals
in life?
As Kidder discusses Dr. Farmer s childhood, it is easy to see how his nomadic and
modest lifestyle early on helped him adjust to living the life he led in Haiti and
around the globe. As a child, Dr. Farmer not only dealt with moving from state to
state, but also having to adjust to different living conditions ranging from living in
a tent to living on bus with his parents and 5 other siblings. Kidder also focuses in
on the work ethic his parents exemplified to him and his five other siblings. They
were all taught to appreciate the little they had and to never be embarrassed for the
lack of material objects they did not (Kidder). Most importantly, his family
encouraged Farmer s desire to learn. For example, when he was just a child, Farmer
started a herpetology club where his family stepped in as members
26. An Example Of Perseverance In Warriors Don T Cry
How many times in life have you struggled but got through a difficult time? That is
called perseverance. The definition of perseverance is Steadfastness in doing
something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Synonyms are
persistence and determination. It originated from the latin word perseverare.
Right now the world has been filled with natural disasters, from hurricanes to
wildfires. Everyone that this affected has been forced to persevere through it
because there is not much that they have the ability to do besides staying strong. In
all of the nonfiction literature we have read there were many different examples of
perseverance from many different people. I decided to choose three. For my first
example Melba Pattillo Beals from Warriors Don t Cry . There is numerous
examples of the Little Rock 9 and her doing something despite difficulty. For the
second example of perseverance I chose Maya Angelou. Through her life there
were countless times that she was faced adversity and still achieved success. My
third example is Earl Simmons (DMX) from the book E.A.R.L . He went through a
tough time at almost all time growing up and he never gave up and achieved
success. Perseverance creates success; therefore, when you stick through something
you can accomplish what you want. In the book Warriors Don t Cry Melba Pattillo
Beals and the rest of the Little Rock 9 were faced with racism as they were trying to
go to a all white school. They all had courage

What tests are used to assess students? There are several tests I use to assess students
Kindergarten to second grade: 1.Test of Cognitive (IQ) Ability such as the Wechsler

school s process for identifying students with special needs? (See Appendix A for
diagrams the school psychologist draw during this part of the conversation). The
process we use is called RTI. All students start with the universal screening (MAP,
DIBELS, DRA, DSA). If the score is at or above benchmark, the instruction continues
as followed. If not, the intervention implemented and progress monitoring occurs. If
the student gets at or above benchmark with the interventions implemented, the
student graduates to the regular instruction. If not, an RTI grade level meeting
occurs to check progress. Then it is decided to intensify or adjust an intervention that
was already in place. From here, a student can graduate or an SPMC (student
progress monitoring conference) takes place to take an individual problem solving
approach. To this meeting attend parent(s), teachers, principal, psychologist, and any
other team member necessary. From this meeting, an intervention is designed for the
specific child and others factors may be addressed as well (home environment, etc.).
Progress is monitor again and the student may graduate. If not, a disability may be
suspected and there may be the need to assess more. A consent for evaluation is
needed prior to testing the student. Parents need to be on board with the

Division three athletics may not be what most power hungry athletes strive to play in,
however, for those that seek a rich academic career while playing collegiate sports,
division three may be the place to achieve that. Division three athletes have the
opportunity to focus more on academics while not being pressured by athletics, such
as having more time throughout the week to study and more leniency when it comes
to completing homework. Furthermore, athletes have the chance to interact more
often with the rest of the studentbody as well as enjoy a life outside of sports. To
continue, this experience may not be accomplished if improper standards are met.

Unlike other institutions in the conference, Wesleyan only provides five sports and
obviously they are women sports. Other institutions have either the same amount or
more of women s sports plus men s sports.
Wesleyan isn t going to become co ed just to receive more funding for sports,
however, since Wesleyan is an all women s college, it is possible that it can contact
organizations that focus on women s active lifestyles such as the Women s Sports
Foundation and the Global Women s Project. In return for their support, Wesleyan
athletes can volunteer with the organizations to promote the statement each one
represents. This will allow for more funding as well as provide exposure for Wesleyan
student athletes. Another possibility is to promote athletics more around the
surrounding community and have partnerships from local family owned facilities,
restaurants, and etc. This will allow Wesleyan student athletes to interact with people
from the community as well as create bonds, which in return will help out game
attendance. Teaming up with local sports teams can also help, for example if
Wesleyan was able to have a night at the Macon Coliseum, where the Macon Mayhem
play, a Southern Professional Hockey League team and a portion of the proceeds
went towards athletics, it would help athletics tremendously. In addition to funding,
Wesleyan struggles with helping athletes find their identity as well as participation.
29. Analysis Of One Night The Moon
Perkins makes frequent use of contrast to explore ideas in One Night The Moon.
Discuss.
In Rachel Perkins film, One Night The Moon, Issues relating to culture and social
class are explored through the perspectives of different characters, as they confront a
tense and divisive situation. Perkins explores the characters relationship with the
outback landscape through a series of emotive songs and structural features, such as
camera angles and wide shots. With the use of contrasts, Perkins is able to express
the theme of cultural difference in a number of ways , however, despite the crisis of
Emily running away, this results in a number of discriminative and conflicting
problems.
In Perkins One Night The Moon, the first contrast Perkins explores is Jim and Alberts
attitudes towards the land. The contrast between the two characters is explored
through the catalyst of Emily running away. This recognises the two difference
perspectives on the natural landscape, and contrasts the two different morals and
values that come with each of the characters. Whilst the diverse voices of the white
culture and the Indigenous culture in One Night the Moon rarely engage , the camera
frequently captures the two different perspectives through the use of song and wide
shots, emphasising their differences. Perkins chooses to emphasise Jm and Alberts
relationship with the land by incorporating song and lyrics. Jim s attitude of the land
is recognised by his frequent expression of this land

31. Impact Of Politics In The Great Gatsby
The politics and events during the 1920s have a huge impact in The Great Gatsby,
by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and are vital to understand the themes presented in the
novel. The story takes place during the roaring twenties, a time of large overall
economic growth and prosperity along with struggles for others. The story begins
shortly after WW1, the first war of its kind that had ended in 1919, and many
soldiers had returned home, which caused society to change once again. After the
war, the government started to focus on large businesses to rebuild the country s
economy. Because of this, legislation was passed in favor or large businesses that
inevitably benefited the rich such as lowered taxes on the wealthy. In addition,
people started to move to urban areas as many agricultural businesses were
suffering due to new administrative policy. This lead to many people becoming
trapped as they were looking for a better life but didn t find one after moving, such
as the people in The Valley of Ashes. However, the people who invested in stocks
profited greatly as stocks nearly doubled and overall the economy boomed in the
1920s. This created newly wealthy people who lavishly spent their money due to
the commercial growth. Moreover, after the 18th amendment was enacted, it was
illegal to sell liquor. This created a large demand for liquor as many people still
wanted to drink. Those who took advantage of this new demand, started to illegally
manufacture alcohol and became rich and added to the newly wealthy people
including Gatsby. As a result, three different classes were created: old money , new
money and no money. One major theme Fitzgerald heavily focuses on in The Great
Gatsbyis the distinct social classes and the moral, social climates that surrounded
them. Another theme evident throughout the novel is the change in the American
Dream by corruption during the 1920s. In The Great Gatsby, there were primarily
three different social classes of the 1920s portrayed in the book. Each was created
through the events of the era and was surrounded by its own social and moral
climates. One class that existed was old money , which were families that lived in
the East Egg that and had acquired their fortunes as early

the feeling of complacency. My 10 week blog has given me a larger insight to the
possibilities and expectations of business management. Not only did I blog about
business management but also about starting up a business of my own. Collectively,
my blogwas a learning experience about the businessworld and all it has to offer. If I
could tie together all of the knowledge I have gained from my blog and research I
would categorize it as motivation and risk. With an unmotivated attitude you aren t
capable of taking the necessary risks that are pertinent to the field of business.
With a field that is based on getting out what you put in there is minimal room for a
lack of enthusiasm but rather requires self propelled success. You are the exact
determinate to your success or failure when getting yourself involved. I have
learned that being successful in business relates a lot to what type of person you
are. With something as risky as trying to start up a business, as an individual, you
must be willing to take on any risk. Your personality comes into play with business
as well because of the connections that must be built to insure cushion for your
business. Getting yourself out into the business world and creating endless
connections is the epitome of a great businessperson. Another aspect to the great
businessperson is the comfort level of risk to their ideas. All ideas you create should

34. Malthusian Catastrophe Research Paper
A reverend named Thomas Robert Malthus, who was influential in the fields of
economics, politics, and demographics, came up with the theory of malthusianism.
Malthusianism describes how the population tends to increase at a faster rate than its
means of subsistence, and unless it is checked, it will cause widespread poverty and
degradation. Malthus also wrote an essay on the principles of population, which
described that unchecked growth is exponential, while the growth of the food supply
is expected to be minimal at best.
Malthus believed there were two checks that could reduce the population, returning it
to a more sustainable level. He believed that abstinence, delaying marriage until
finances become suitable for a family, and restricting ... Show more content on

An example of natural Malthusian catastrophe would be a disease that wipes out most
of the poverty in a region. An example of forcing a Malthusian catastrophe would
be setting laws on the number of children you can have. I think it would be best to
let it happen naturally, but if it is to out of control, then it would be better to force it.
The longer a country remains over populated, the harder it will become to be able to
return the population back to balance.
If a Malthusian catastrophe were to happen naturally, you could say that the earth
has its own checks to maintain the population. When a certain region becomes over
populated, that region becomes filled with poverty. A deadly disease could arise
and kill many of the people living in poverty, balancing out the population back to
normal. Many people who live in poverty do not have good living conditions, and a
severe storm could also cause a lot of destruction and death.
A Malthusian catastrophe can be simplified into three basic concepts: production,
distribution, and technology. These three concepts can all be related back to the food
supply of a population. How to produce more food, distribute the food equally, and
use technology to help prevent a Malthusian catastrophe.

You can kiss your family and friends good bye and put miles between you, but at
the same time you carry them with you in your heart, your mind, your stomach,
because you do not just live in a world, but a world lives in you. Fredrick Buechner.
In today s world there seems to be many problems between teens and their families.
There are key factors in these tensions such as parental divorce, technology,
depression, and so many other issues. It can be very difficult for teenagers to relate
to their families and vice versa. It is important for a teen to grow up in an
environment where they feel loved and supported. These are the years where young
adults begin to find out who they are and what they believe in. This means that
families have to work hard to keep their teens involved with them. The five ways to
improve a teens home life are: patience, communication, respect, trust, and spending
quality time together. Patience is key to keeping a good relationship between parents
and their teen(s). It is important that teens and parents are both patient with each
other. Teens take time to get over the difficulties they face in their day to day life.
Parents have to be there to help their kids when they need it, but also have to
understand the teen may not always wanttheir parents help. In these situations, they
should not try and force their help onto the teen. This may cause their kid to push

three cooks make all the food. In the rear is a squarish dining room that can fit about
16 people if they all hold their breath.
The tight quarters back there, the low ceiling broken by a skylight, and the glossy

37. Virgin Of Guadalupe Summary
Whether it be on prayer cards or gold chains, the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe
has resonance with the nation of Mexico. Modern Mexican icons, such as the Virgin
of Guadalupe, have foundations in Post Conquest New Spain s plight in forming an
identity separate from that of Spain. In James Cordova s Colonial Rhetorics, a
chapter within The Art of Professing in Bourbon Mexico, Cordova asserts a similar
notion. This chapter argues that local emblems, such as the Virgin of Guadalupe and
the crowned nuns, were manipulated to articulate integral portions of New Spain s
identity in the eighteenth century. This paper summarizes this chapter s three
subheadings: European Images of the Americas, Local American Emblems, and New
Spanish Patriotism... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The extent of Cordova s debriefing on the intersection of gender with the
aforementioned themes is in relation to the hagiographers preference in imagery of
the penitent and discalced nuns over imagery of the crowned nuns. The reason being
that the crowned nuns threatened the Counter Reformation efforts of orthodoxy and
had the power to ... threaten male ecclesiastical power if left unchecked (Cordova
164). However, what Cordova fails to note in both the popularization of imagery like
the Virgin of Guadalupe and the crowned nuns, is the significance in their depiction
as not only females idols, but chaste female idols. Their chastity is an integral
characteristic of their being and womanhood, which is reflective of the
Enlightenment era s emphasis on creating defined gender roles, pushing beyond the
mere difference in genitalia to describe anatomical depth. The female gender was
subsequently subscribed to the importance of their modesty and chastity. Therefore,
the aggrandization of female religious icons is not just symptomatic of the plight of
New Spain to develop a unique and respected identity, but is also in direct relation to
the enforcement of strict gender conformant. These two
38. Becky s New Car Reaction
Becky s New Car Reaction Going to see Becky s New Car was an eye opening
experience, demonstrating how people are today. Becky s New Car was a comedy
and also a drama. I believe this play is very relatable because Becky shows how when
people say, I want a new car, it really means that they are looking for a change in
their life. In my essay, I explain my reaction to the play and try to explain what the
play is saying about life, how it impacted my life, and whether the actors were
suitable for this type of play.
In the play Becky s New Car, the playwright was trying to say that you may not have
the most perfect life and may not like it but when you leave it you realize what you
are giving up. In the play, Becky has a normal life: cooking, cleaning, and working.
She has a son that is about to graduate college and a husband that is constantly
working. When the chance arose, a man offered to bring her to his house far out of
town; she took it because she relates to her being in an new car as her being in an
new life. As she kept seeing the man that she had met, lots of tension was brought
up between her, her family, and her work. The central conflict of this was Becky
was lying to her husband saying she had a lot of work to do at work, when she

39. Taxable Income And International Transfer Pricing Essay
Taxable Income and International Transfer Pricing Business organizations
increasingly look to globalization to increase profitability and maintain
competitiveness. Income from such operations is taxed differently in the United
States (US) dependent upon type of income and the levels of said income. Such
foreign corporations that are controlled by US shareholders are considered controlled
foreign corporations (CFC) which must comply with taxrules instituted in 1962
(Doupnik Perera, 2014). Wholly owned subsidiaries of US companies such as
Bahamamama, Ltd, the subsidiaryof Mama Corporation, are considered a CFC, and
as such companies such as Mama Corporation must determine income taxed by the
US. Additionally, global organizations seek to reduce tax liabilities through transfer
pricing. Transfer pricing is used to determine the price of transactions between
subsidiaries and parent companies and is used to reduce tax liabilities of US parent
companies. As such, tax authorities intervene to ensure US corporations report
correct tax liabilities.
Mama Corporation Subsidiary Bahamamama, Ltd. Mama Corporation s subsidiary
Bahamamama, Ltd, is a wholly owned subsidiary. As a wholly owned subsidiary,
Bahamamama, Ltd is considered a CFC and as such must determine income taxable
to the parent company. The income taxable is subpart F income, which is income that
can be easily moved between tax jursidictions (Doupnik Perera, 2014). Such income
includes sales to customers
40. The Four Stages Of Group Development
The four stages of group development are forming, storming, norming, and
performing. None of the stages have to go in a particular order. Forming is the first
stage where people join together for a reason. Our group formed because this class
put us together, which was mainly based on the need to fulfill the goal of passing
Small Group Communication and doing a service project together. This happened
when we filled out the sheets about our skills and whom we would and would not
like to work with. We were then all introduced to our new groups in class.
Stage two was next for us. This stage is called storming. This is the tension felt in
the group. It is fine for a group to have tension as long as it is a healthy balance of
helpful and unhelpful tension. There are two different types. The first is primary
tension, which is what a group feels when they first meet. That tension usually
goes away over time as the group finds a sense of cohesiveness. There is also
secondary tension, which consists of the stress and strain of dealing with
deadlines, conflicts, and scheduling issues. Our group honestly had a very healthy
balance of tension. We all got along from the very first time we met. I even
remember us all saying how happy we were that we ended up in The Avengers. This
continued on even with deadlines, conflicts, and schedules. We all were very good
about being flexible and open to new ideas for the most part. I think that deadlines
just pushed us to work harder and cooperate

The Vanguard Group, headquartered in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, was founded
in 1975 by John C. Bogle and has grown to become one of the largest investments
companies in the world. As of June 30, 2016, the company has more than $3.5
trillion in global assets, with more than 20 million investors served by 14,000
employees, known as crew members. (Fast facts about Vanguard). Vanguard
leverages its technology to support various types of investors through websites and

As stated above, one of the reasons that Vanguard has been able to grow so large
and keep its fees low is because of its use of technology. Vanguard has always had a
mix of IT professional who were Vanguard employees and outside contractors, but
about three years ago, Vanguard started operate with a hybrid offshore outsourcing
model. While a majority of the IT professionals are still crew members, a significant
amount of the development teams are now outsourced to an offshore company. Most
the outsourced professionals are based in India, but some of them are doing their
work in the U.S., comingled with the Vanguard
42. Graphic Design Progression
as long as I can remember I have been interested in things like sketching drawing
painting computers and anything to do with arts and crafts. I have always been
interested in arts and crafts since I was a child. I used to sit and draw images and
people in most of my free time. As I got older, and technology advanced I started
finding ways to make my sketches and characters more detailed by use of computer
applications. This is where my interest in the graphic designfield first blossomed. I
would spend hours upon hours trying new things and designing flyers and
postcards. All the while, honing and sharpening my skills. It wasn t until my
senior year in high school and entering college that I have found that there was a
career which incorporates these things. I can actually get paid to do what I love.
That career is graphic design. Graphic design was a good career path that same
instantly like something that I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life but upon
researching it I found even more reasons to pursue this career field. This is a job

five days a week and bring home about $1,500 every week. As a graphic designer, I
am an independent contractor, so I collect all of my money in full and am responsible
for paying taxes on my on every year. Not like the average job where the taxes are
deducted from my check in advance. I have to be really responsible when dealing in
a cash business like this because failure to keep up with taxes can result in heavy
fines and even jail
43. The First Edition Of The Mcguffey Readers By William...
The first edition of The McGuffey Readers was written in 1836 by William Holmes
McGuffey, a devout Presbyterian, raised in 19th century America. These schoolbooks
outline the values and expectations of a society built upon a Christian base on the
brink of industrialization. Societal relationships were built upon concepts taught in
the Readers. The events of industrialization, and immigration will challenge these
guidelines and contain interesting results for the use of the Readers morals within
society. These values cause the tensions amongst economic groups within the
industrialization of America, while also translating into American s perception of and
attitude toward immigrants. Values of especial importance when discussing this...

The importance of hard work and earning your way instills a sense of
independence within the young generation who was reading the McGuffey
textbooks. In the stories Henry, the Boot Black (128) and Poor Davy (130) both
boys, living in poverty, are praised for their work to support their mother. Working
hard to earn a living, even at a young age, is commended and the value of family is
reiterated. There is a belief that hard work prepares and enables one to lead a
prosperous life. In Charlie and Rob (133) and Advantages of Industry (97), hard
work pays off and is portrayed as the only way to become successful. This core
value of work ethic for the American will be important in the changing world of
industrialization and effect the attitude of the working class American toward those
of wealth, as well as immigrants. The Readers teach the young minds they are
molding the concepts of kindness and charity. In the lesson The New Year (83),
Edward gives money to a poor family, in Emulation (98), a young boy sacrifices his
own prominence to help his fellow classmate. The many stories revolving around
family and virtues such as, kindness show how looking out for your fellow man was
taught through this text. This will be an important idea in the discussion of societal
relationships throughout industrialization and it is this value that seems to be the
most challenged and evolved within the period of

1.0OVERVIEW
This chapter explain about background of the study, problem statement, objective,
hypothesis, significant of the study and limitation related to the study.
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Resistance training has become one of most popular physical activities for increasing
muscular strength, endurance, hypertrophy and muscular power (American College
of Sports Medicine, 2002). Resistance training can be done either in the gymnasium
or outside the gymnasium using the weight, barbell, dumbbell, machine exercise, fit
ball or body weight using the variables that needed. When designing resistance
training programs, many variables such as intensity, volume, frequency, repetition,
and velocity and rest interval must be considered as all these variable can be
manipulated to meet training goals (Baechle Earle ... Show more content on

suitable and can cause their result in resistance training become in efficient. Mistake
in applying the rest interval in any resistance training program could theoretically
result in overtraining syndrome. Robinson, stone, Johnson, Penland, Warren and
Lewis (1995) stated in their study that, the 3 minute rest interval led to greater
strength increase because of the ability to maintain a higher training intensity and it
demonstrated that greater muscular recovery via longer rest interval between sets is
the key to greater strength increases. If the training goal is maximal strength
development, sufficient of rest interval between sets must be included in the
resistance training to get a greater

Parents knowing that their child is in a secure place is a wonderful feeling. The

the mother can t go to school because there is nowhere for her child to go.

46. The Faerie Queene Essay
Edmund Spenser s epic poem The Faerie Queene is well known as an allegorical
work, and the poem is typically read in relation to the political and religious context
of the time. The term allegory tends to be loosely defined, rendering a whole work
an extended metaphor, or even implying any writing in verse or prose that has a
double meaning (Cuddon 20). In true Spenserian style, with everything having double
meanings, both uses of the term allegoryare applicable to his writing.
Thus, during the course of this essay it is best not to think of allegory in terms of
the size of a body of writing, but as writing with a second distinct meaning partially
hidden behind its literal or visible meaning (Baldick 6). Whilst reading for political ...

I am to prove the most insightful allegory is drawn from the text when examining
varying meanings, and not simply prescribing one allegorical reading.
It is worth noting, that when first mentioned, multiple characters accompany Una
and Duessa. They are both introduced as secondary characters, making them
supplementary to the men they are introduced with. Spenser s rich allegory allows
readers to draw meaning from most of his writing, and it is because of this that the
characters with whom Una and Duessa are traveling can help readers to interpret
their allegory. Una is introduced only three stanzas after the Red Crosse Knight,
but the diction of the opening line A lovely lady rode him faire beside (42),
immediately tells readers she is currently an accessory to the Knight. Likewise
when Duessa is introduced Spenser omits to mention her name, simply stating
Sansfoy had a faire companion of his way (58). The first mention of both
characters is almost identical; they are both described with exactly the same
adjective, faire , and as completing the same action of accompanying a man on his
travels. It is because of this sameness that it becomes important to draw judgment of
Una and Duessa s characters by their peers. With Spenser choosing to say little of
them initially, both the Red Crosse Knight and Sansfoy become indicators of Una
and Duessa s identities respectively. The Red
47. Fearless And The American Dream
The novel Fearless by Eric Blehm tells the story of Adam Brown. Most people
spend their entire lives trying to achieve the American Dream. Our forefathers
deemed this the pursuit of happiness in a person s life and to make the most of
America with the opportunities it holds. Adam accomplished the American Dream
at a very young age. Through his death, he made the ultimate sacrifice for his
country, and that is one of the reasons he is a true hero. Adam Brown achieved his
American Dream by overcoming drugs, becoming a father, and joining the Navy
SEALS. Adam was an extraordinary kid. He feared nothing. When he was two, he
jumped 12 feet from the deck at his house (pg 13). He played football, had amazing
family and friends, and had his fair share of trouble. He always was kind to
everyone and stood up for the underdog (pg 25). All of his classmates and teachers
adored him. The worst mistake of his life started the first time he tried drugs (pg
44). This started a whirlwind of pain and anxiety on all of Adam s family. Adam
would disappear for long periods of time, steal from his parents, and had many bad
influences (pg 48). He hit the lowest of the low while at a party when he stabbed
himself in the neck (pg 55). This was very hard for everyone that knew Adam. He
got sent to a rehab facility and faced many challenges while he was there (pg 57).
He finally got released out into the real world after finishing the 12 step AA program
(pg 58). Adam had many ups and downs after this.
48. The Myth Of Sisyphus By Albert Camus
The Myth of Sisyphus is a philosophical essay authored by Albert Camus.
Originally published in French in 1942 as Le Mythe de Sisyphe, It was translated
into English by Justin O Brien in 1955. Camus in this essay introduces his concept
of the absurd . He talks of man s futile search for meaning, unity, and clarity. He
states that for man the world becomes an unintelligible space which is devoid of
God, moral ethics and eternal truths. In such a situation one is forced to
contemplate Is suicide the only way out hence? Camus is of the opinion that by
revolting against the absurdity of life one can overcome absurdity. Camus goes on
to discuss the similarities between Sisyphus and modern day man s life. Sisyphus
was punished by the God s to eternally push a boulder up the hill just to see it roll
back down. The essay concludes, The struggle itself [...] is enough to fill a man s
heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy. Camus addresses the issue of man s
aspirations for a better tomorrow, without realizing that each day brings him closer
to his ultimate reality: death. Death is the ultimate reality of all mankind something
one fails to acknowledge in one s lifetime. The world once stripped of its ideal
romanticism, is a strange, inhuman and foreign place. True knowledge is impossible
and not everything can be reasoned or answered through science. From the moment
absurdity is recognized, it becomes a passion, the most harrowing of all. Sisyphus as
represented by Camus is a

Gang Violence In Our Streets
Gang violence has been around for a long time all the way back to the 1800 and
have greatly increased all around the globe ever since. Gangs are a group of people
that fight and kill other gangs over turf, money, pride, and drugs. People usually join
gangs from around the age of 8 to the age 20. Most gang members join because they
have been abused by their parents or because they don t have a family. Gangs treat
each other like a family, that is the most common reason why people join, they want
to be accepted, they want to feel like if they belong something.
The people who are most affected by this are usually always the most innocent.
Enemy gangs usually do drive by s which are meant to kill an enemy gang usually
end up killing innocent pedestrians walking down the street. Business owners are
also being involved by this. Gangs usually use abandoned houses or businesses as a
way to mark their turf. They also graffiti on business walls which lead to a loss in
customers which lead to a loss in money for the business which leads to the business
shutting down leaving yet another abandoned house for the gang. Most gangs also
break into houses at night and steal from the home residents often killing them or
robbing them of all their prized possessions. They are also almost always involved in
gang wars where they kill enemy gang members so that they can gain more turf.
Gangs also usually smuggle immigrants through

AP LA Rhetorical Essay Peer pressure is a common aspect of society that can
ultimately result in devastating consequences. Often times, one is encouraged to
follow the beliefs of others by changing their values and behaviors. Whether one truly
has the motive to perform such actions, those who surround always have the potential
to influence our decisions. In the short story, Shooting an Elephant , written by
George Orwell, the concept of one being pressured to perform something against
their will in order to preserve their image is very prominent. This essay well

society even if it doesn t follow what they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The story, written in first person, gives insight of the narrator s thought process. It
is well conveyed that Orwell is very unhappy with his current position and is
working for something he doesn t believe in, which allows his audience to feel
sympathetic to his current situation. His dilemma is clearly presented whether he
should shoot the elephant or not which provides a universal theme of a personal
battle, to choose what one believes is right, or whether to conform with society.
Ultimately, this provides an emotional connection between Orwell and the reader,
as they can relate to the feeling, which gives them a better understanding of the
story s main point. The shooting of the elephant itself also provokes an emotional
response from the audience, as Orwell employs the element of death in a powerful
and symbolic way. It is well persuaded throughout the story that he believed the
elephant did not deserve to die, and the death itself is portrayed as devastating to
him.. (Orwell, 5). The remorseful tone in this ending sentence exposes to the
audience that just because something appears to be socially acceptable does not
mean in any way that it is right for us to do, in which this case, the guilt exposed to
the reader illustrates the negative consequences of social

The Meaning behind Aircrafts Anxiety. Fear. Sadness. These are the things that the
courageous members of the allied Air Forces all felt during the time of WWII.
Several different types of fighting were used in WWII, battleships, tanks, and
legions of soldiers, but the most useful, and perhaps the most deadly of all was
flying a military aircraft. Aircrafts were powerful tools in the war, yet they were
also a very expensive price to pay. The risk of using aircraft in combat was high,
but it was extremely useful to the allied forces. First, during the dark time of WWII,
there were four main types of planes: fighters, bombers, seaplanes, and transport
aircraft. Fighters such as the Spitfire and the Hawker Fury were used as prime

military aircraft are just a reminder of the time. However, the reminder of WWII
doesn t have to be painful. Since 1945, people have begun to love the old planes
used in battle. Many people like to go to airshows, where old military aircraft set to
the sky in a performance of skill. My own grandpa, who is past 80 years old,

52. Essay On Autism
Mice with an extra autism gene have more anxiety and seizures
A recent study has found that a gene linked to autism caused mice in their
experiments to have more seizures and anxiety. Dr. Jill Silverman is an assistant
professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Davis. She led a team of
researchers to study a specific gene that might be linked to autism.
What was the gene that they studied?
This gene the researchers studied was called UBE3A. This gene is found in a lot of
tissues including skin, stomach lining, and the brain. UBE3A can code several
different proteins. One protein is actually an enzyme that cleans up other proteins by
tagging them for destruction. This is helpful for cells to get rid of proteins they no ...

Doctors call this syndrome the Dup15q syndrome. This syndrome helps describe the
trend we see whenever someone has two or more copies of this chromosome. When
someone has this, they tend to also have many neurologic symptoms including
anxiety, developmental delay, and seizures. The syndrome also seems to affect
speech and motor functions. A lot of these people have problems with coordination
and muscle tone.
How did they study this in mice?
To study this gene further, Dr. Silverman and her team developed genetically
manipulated mice. They specifically bred their mutant mice so that they would
produce a large amount of protein of the longest type possible in their brain.
Particularly, they saw that these mice overexpressed the UBE3A protein levels
especially in the excitatory neurons of the cortex and hippocampus. The researchers
then compared their mutant mice with their normal mice to try and detect behavioral
differences.
What did the research team find?
Mice overexpressing UBE3A seemed to be more anxious.
The team noticed mice with more UBE3A seemed to be more anxious. These mice
were less likely to go from dark areas of light, which might be because they are
more nervous about being out in the open and exposed. The mice were also less
likely to explore their housing cages. The researchers had put extra chambers to test
the exploration behavior in their mice, and they found their mutant mice were
