Analysis Of The Film Natural Born Killers
The 20th century was arguably the most grotesque and violent period of modern contemporary
human existence. The 20th century witnessed the horrors of the first modern wars between World
War 2, The Vietnam War, and the Korean War just to name a few. The unnerving reality of possible
nuclear detonation as The Cold Warprogressed put the American populace in a state of constant fear
over an imminent nuclear holocaust. The 20th centuryalso saw the birth of many infamous serial
killers in its later half such as Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, O.J Simpson, and many other homicidal
psychopaths. The glaring irony of the 20th century is how mankind becomes more violent as it
progresses; the more we humans advance the tools of destruction, the more likely we are to
implement them, killing exponentially more each time we progress as one would logically imagine
our primal instincts would become suppressed as humanity evolves. A century built on gore and
violence inspired many theatrical depictions of the events that had occurred within the 20th century,
but the quintessential film satirizing the 20th century whilst still also portraying a symbolic
message would be Natural Born Killers by the legendary cinematic director, Oliver Stone. Stone s
film Natural Born Killers symbolizes the 20th s century s murderous history and humanity s
unsettling fascination and obsession with death and murder. Natural Born Killers is not only a
satirization of the massive amount of death in the 20th

The Poetry of Billy Collins Essay
The Poetry of Billy Collins
In 2001 a new poet laureate was crowned and a new voice; the voice of a poetic everyman was
heard by many for the first time. That voice belonged to Billy Collins. Collins was born into a
working class Bronx couple, and grew up in a typical middle class neighborhood where he went to
church on Sundays and listened to jazz music in his free time.
This middle class background and sensibilities are reflected in his poetic style and themes, and in
his desire to bring poetry back into the American main stream by making it more accessible to the
average reader. Billy Collins was born March 22, 1941 in Queens, New York. He was born into a
middle class family. His parents were of Irish descent, and had ... Show more content on

They include Poker face (1977), Video Poems (1980),
The Apple That Astonished Paris (1988), Questions About Angles (1991),
The Art of Drowning (1995), Picnic, Lighting (1998), Sailing Alone
Around the Room (2002), The After Life, and Nine Horses. In 1997 Billy
Collins married Diane Olbright, who he had met while attending the
University of California at Riverside. When they married she was the host of ABC s Wide World
of Sports , she is currently an architect.
Many things have had a large influenced Collins poetry. Religious faith has a particularly large
impact. Billy grew up in a highly religious Irish Catholic family, and was taught how to live a good
Christian life. Collins, however, is not as deeply religious as his parents, but still continues to be
Catholic for the sake of continuity, and respect toward his parents (Press). Many of Collins poems
center around the ideas of religion; in fact, his book The
Afterlife is dedicated solely to religious themes. Jazz has also influenced Billy Collins poetry. He
grew up listening to jazz, and many of his poems are about his love for this music (Mazin). The
works of other poets have also influenced Collins writing. Although he certainly has his own unique
style of writing, the influence of
Elizabethan metaphysical poetry is evident Collins particularly admires the works of George
Herbert and John Donne (Billy Collins).
George Herbert uses homely and every day images in his poetry as

The Representation of Women in Snow White, Sonnet 130 and...
The representation of females in literary Works is a polemical issue. They have often been
associated with a misogynistic stereotype. I have chosen three literary texts to compare the
descriptions of women; Snow White , Sonnet 130 by William Shakespeare and The Rape of the
Lock by Alexander Pope. This will draw attention to the way that women are often portrayed as
we see the common ingredients in their descriptions, as well as any potential differences between
them. In both Snow White and The Rape of the Lock women are portrayed as vain and obsessed
with their beauty. The speaker in The Rape of the Lock condemns the girl described, Belinda, for
her obsession with appearances by mocking her through the use of hyperbole, for... Show more

We can see a clear contrast in the description of Little Snow White and the mistress from Sonnet
130 , to the point that they are almost the antithesis of each other. An example of this is their
skin. Little Snow White is said to be white as snow (line 8), whereas the sonnet says If snow be
white, why then [the mistress ] breasts are dun (line 3). Another example is their cheeks, where
the mistress is said to have no such roses (line 6) in her cheeks, Little Snow White is described
as rosy as blood ( line 8). Finally there is a distinct variation in the description of their hair,
although in both cases black, Little Snow White s is described as being black as ebony (line 9)
where the mistress hair is said to be black wires , the choice of simile is extremely different,
ebony being a luxurious and presumably beautiful material and wires being supposedly common
and ugly. The three portrayals of female beauty are conflicting, with Belinda s being purely
artificial, like a façade, Little Snow White s being natural, and the mistress being apparently non
existent. With these descriptions go three opposing perceptions of women. The first two are
extremely misogynistic; The Rape of the Lock ridicules them as vain, shallow people, Snow White
objectifies them by

Examples Of Rite Of Passage In Ayn Rand s Anthem
A rite of passage is a transition from one stage of life to another. These passages are pursued when
one passes a milestone such as birth, maturity, and achieving adulthood. These milestones will
clearly show changes in the characters life. It involves significant change in their views, and of
society. A rite of passageis shown in Anthem, Shakespeare Bats Cleanup, and Great Expectations.
The characters show significant changes as they transition through their life.. In Anthem by Ayn
Rand Equality 7 2521 transitioned through stage of his life with his talents. Equality transitioned
from being a typical street sweeper to Prometheus, a free man, escaped from society. Throughout
his rite of passage, Equality put his talents to work and invented electricity with the litebulb. This
discovery pushes him into a complete rebellion as the World Council threatens to destroy the
lightbulb. Because he will not abide seeing the light bulb destroyed, even though he might tolerate
his own destruction, he is forced into exile from his society. Equality had broken from his society
and finally became free. Equality 7 2521 discarded his given name, which shows his frustration

Reflex Sympathetic Disease
Background of CRPS: Reflex Sympathetic Disease (RSD), now known as Complex Regional Pain
Syndrome (CRPS), is a peripheral condition in which localized or diffuse pain, associated swelling,
discoloration, abnormally sensitive, and useless extremity occur.1,2,3,6,7,8,9 Originally it was first
described as a complication of gunshot wounds in the American Civil War.2 Often times there is a
history of trauma to the affected area, but sometimes the trauma is so insignificant it is overlooked
by the patient, especially since symptoms may occur up to 6 months after injury.1 Other causes
such as stroke, shingles, cerebrovascular accident, myocardial infarction and other neurological
disorders can also be triggers as well.1,2,4 The International Association... Show more content on

The Etruscan Temples And The Parthenon
During the fifth century and Eighth century BCE, The Etruscan Temples and The Parthenon were
built and valued by their cultures for many spiritual and cultural reasons. Similar to the Parthenon,
The Etruscan Temples are built with influences from Greece. However, Both have different
appearances based off of there medium, purpose, and architecture. The Etruscan Temple and the
Parthenonboth have strong stances within there cultures and provide peace and empowerment for
the population of the time. Both structures are two similar ancient buildings, though there
differences in culture and architecture set them apart. The Etruscan culture was located in
central Italy to the north of Rome. The Etruscan Temples were built by the Etruscans during the
Archaic period (600 480 BCE). By the time archaeologists discovered the Etruscan Temples, they
were very worn down and most were no longer standing, though, they were measured to about
5x6 meters long with a height of 2 meters with the altar of ten steps in the front of the temple.
The Etruscans made small temples, like little houses with pointed roofs, entirely of wood, but
then outside, they had freizes and cornices and crests of terra cotta so the upper part of the
temple would seem as almost made of earthenware... (Lawrence 52) They were able to use the
mud as a kind of concrete to keep the wood and brick in place. The Temples typically had three
cellas where as the Parthenon only had one. As for the Parthenon, it was located on

Love, By Laura Kipnis
You ll be mine and I ll be yours. Everything will be perfect until one screws up, but what if no one
screws up? Yes, if no one screws up you made it to the finish line of a happily ever after . Love is
such a crazy thing, one day is alive and growing and the next is fading until it completely dies.
Everyone will have their own view on love, but love is vague, for one knows about today but not
about tomorrow. In her critique of love, Against Love, Laura Kipnis offers a judgmental version
of what constitutes real love . She questions whether we truly desire love, or rather, are
conditioned to. She asserts that social forms accustomed us to pursue a love life so that we are
entertained and wanted. But everyone has a different opinion on the matter. In his short story,
What We Talk about When We Talk about Love, Raymond Carver tells the story of four different
individuals in which he explores the perceptions of love by referring to their beliefs and
experiences. One of the four characters, Mel, seems to have an unclear perspective on love
himself as he questions his love life and asserts that everyone is entitled to look for love when is
missing. If Mel was to have a conversation with Kipnis they would agree and disagree on certain
ideas, for they both are able to understand the complexity of the matter. Mel would agree with
Kipnis that society forces one to feel like a failure when love dies and that people move on
because society expects us to, as he questions his

This desert abode served as host for early prehistoric inhabitants, Native Americans, early pioneers,
Spanish miners, and presently outdoor enthusiasts. Adventurists have the opportunity to explore
over 800 miles of intertwining roads that braid the landscape. Gold Butte has remained one of
Mojave s most precious secrets for decades. This elegant desert hides only an hour and a half drive
east of Las Vegas and just south of Mesquite, Nevada. Gold Butte s ecosystem is comprised of
diverse organisms, many of which are sacred and protected plants and animals. Joshua trees sit
nestled deep in the mineral enriched sand, while the bighorn sheep and tortoise roam the vast desert
terrain. The almost 350,000 acres of public land is sculpted with rugged mountains, sandstone
outcroppings, yucca forests, slot canyons, and flat top mesas. Is it possible that a place with such a
unique array of wildlife and history can exist and remain a secret? Unfortunately, due to many
factors over the past 20 years, Gold Butte has been on center stage, but not just for tourism.
The technological uses of smartphones, GPS, digital maps, the internet, and even social websites

their maintenance can often be a highly debated subject. Such is the care when it comes to bore

and brushes used in weapons maintenance. Even while I was serving in the Army, we had the
same cleaning standards across the board. However, the weapons would almost never be dressed

recommendation of getting your shots down on paper prior to scrubbing the bore with a brush.
I think great care must be used when you use any type of brush on a weapon. This is because of
the hostile nature of the brush on the interior of the bore. When I clean my weapons I always
use a bore guide to prevent scraping the sides of the bore. Also I prefer to use nylon over brass
anytime. It is less abrasive, and likely to cause the damage that brass

Review Of Descartes Meditations On First Philosophy
Descartes s conception of the self and how the self relates to the body started with how
Descartes viewed the self in Meditations on First Philosophy. Descartes wanted to start a new
foundation with philosophy and so he used reason to find truths that were unboubtful. Since
sense data can deceive you, Descartes could not trust things he saw, heard, or felt. I have noticed
that the sense are sometimes deceptive; and it is a mark of prudence never to place our
complete trust in those who have deceived us even once (Descartes, 1993, p.14). However, he
realized it was possible to overcome senses due to reason. A person can doubt what they see, since
it could be a dream or an insane state, but person s existence is undoubtful because it is self evident.

Research articles can be quite complex and adding patents to the mix seems to make the
comprehensive level even more challenging. In this paper lies three parts commonly seen within a
research article and explains how each of them are connected and deemed vital for approval of a
plant patent. The three parts are the methods done in the experiment, the results from the
experiment, and the textual features that make the article more credible and organized. This paper

There are genre agents which are structural elements of a document or communicative situation
that exert agency within a context that includes player agents (Moeller). For example excerpts
or results taken from the research article can be used in a scientific article or to make textbooks
seem more up to date by giving new information that is popularly being studied. Now onto to the
three parts shortly discussed earlier. The first part of the research article that connects back to
plant patents are the methods section. This is where the player agents such as the researchers get
involved in order to make sense of the whole process. Methods are a great way for other player
agents such as competing researchers or patent reviewer to follow the procedures. It also helps
other scientists who are interested in the study to see if the experiment actually works. A play
scenario could be where research is done to create the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. This
plant was created in order to possibly reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which was done
first by Liang and his colleagues. Liang had gathered information on Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes

The Role Of Ecological Validity Of A Research Study On Memory
This essay will be looking at the role of ecological validity and the importance it has in
psychological research. Ecological validity refers to the extent to which a study reflects
naturally occurring or everyday situations. It will also consider the advantages and
disadvantages of ecological validity, through exploring studies such as the bobo doll experiment
and a study on memory. Ecological validity is one of many important factor in psychological
research. Also being addressed is what goes into a study or experiment and all the things that
need to be considered to achieve ecological validity. In addition, it is important to design the
study in such a way that the results obtained can be usefully and meaningfully applied to the area
in question. Constructing experiments that achieve high ecological validity is quite a complex
and difficult task. When conducting a study or experiment there are lots of issues that
researchers and psychologists need to consider. Making good decisions on features like
conditions can make all the difference between a poor research study and one that contributes
significantly to new knowledge. The more researchers try to control a study or experiment, the
less ecological validity it tends to have. Studies or experiments that have high ecological validity
allows psychologists to generalise the findings which shows how behaviour is affected in real life.
A negative drawback from a study with high ecological validity is that it is very hard to

Still, Carey pressed on recognizing that a price must be paid for their success . However, the
reality is that for the missionary today on the foreign field, when persecution, loneliness,
despair, frustration, and temptation manifest themselves it can take its toll physically and
psychologically. In Luke 14:28, the Lord instructs in the biblical text to count the cost of an
endeavor before you undertake it. This not only should be done financially, but emotionally,
physically, and psychologically as well. It is recognized that wherever God calls He will give
that individual and family what they need holistically to accomplish the task at hand. At the
same time, a call to serve is a call to prepare oneself for service and it should be recognized that
there are always consequences to our decisions. This preparation time includes not only a
seminary education and experience in ministry, but psychological stability is paramount for these
missionaries. Many sending agencies have a thorough psychological screening process in place
and some do not. Hall amp; Sweatman (2002) recognize that psychological assessment is only one
piece of a larger assessment strategy for the missionary candidate. Along with the psychological
issues to be tested are the assessment of doctrinal unity with the sending agency, a unity in the
vision of the mission work, and proven leadership just to name a few areas. This same research by

Roper V. Simmons Case Study
Roper vs Simmons was considered a landmark case in 2005 in which the Supreme court chose that
it is unconstitutional to impose the death penalty for crimes that have been committed while under
the age of 18. The decision was not unanimous, but was a very close 5 4 voting. The voting
overturned a previous ruling that the death penalty cannot be enforced for those who are under the
age of 16, but 16 and older can receive capital punishment.
Christopher Simmons who at the time was a 17 year old boy who had planned a murder with
two of his friends. Charles Benjamin and John Tessmer were the two other kids that Christopher
got into his plan to murder Shirley Crock. The plan of murder was confessed by the boys during
court. The plan was to break into Shirley s house and bound her hands and legs. Next the plan
was to take her to the local bridge and throw her off the bridge. That was the plan that the three
boys had made. When the three boys met during the middle of the night Tessmer dropped out and
left. The other two continued the plan and carried out exactly as it was planned and drowned
Shirley Crock by throwing her off the bridge.

A Romantic And Modernist Perspective
Kyle D. Brubaker
Dr. Vernooy
ENG 237 01
11 December 2014
Memory: A Romantic and Modernist Perspective During an age when Britain was producing more
writing than perhaps ever before in its history; romantic writers such as Wordsworth and Coleridge
place a large emphasis on nature and what impact this construct has on the mind and imagination,
while modernist writers such as Hardy, Lawrence, and Yeats attempt to exercise a strong break from
tradition. This ideal of straying from the pack creates a sense of bitterness and radical doubt
throughout the modernist period, and thus, causes citizens living in this time to carry about their
daily activities with doubt and pessimistic attitudes.
After examining the literary movements of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One can argue that William Wordsworthbelieves that memory can be utilized as an anecdote that
is able to cure someone s pain, while a writer such as Thomas Hardy would disapprove of this
Wordsworthian ideal by believing that memory is simply a shroud of gray (Vernooy). This
claim can be supported as true when Wordsworth s Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern
Abbey is examined more closely. Within this piece, Wordsworth states, These beauteous forms
/Through a long absence, have not been to me/As is a landscape to a blind man s eye/But oft, in
lonely rooms, and mid the din/Of towns and cities, I have owed to them/In hours of weariness,
sensations sweet (Wordsworth 23 27). Here, Wordsworth provides a detailed description about
how nature is able to provide a safe haven for him in a time when Britain s cities are looking to
industrialize more than ever. By personifying nature during this time of economic crisis,
Wordsworth is creating an outlet that aids him in moving forward.
Conversely, Thomas Hardy encompasses the idea of nature and memory by almost insulting
Wordsworth. For instance, Hardy would argue that one cannot sit on the couch and rekindle old
memories in order to transgress, but instead, one needs to be out and about in order to gather as
many physical memories as humanly possible. Within Hardy s Under the Waterfall, the female
persona is attempting to rekindle one of her past memories, which as we all

Things seemed clearer to me after that trip and I was able to remind myself that not everyone

Diabetes Affects The Body
Diabetes is a disease that affects the use of insulin in the body. According to the Merriam Webster
Online Dictionary diabetes mellitus is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism caused by a
combination of hereditary and environmental factors and usually characterized by inadequate
secretion or utilization of insulin, by excessive urine production, by excessive amounts of sugar in
the blood and urine, and by thirst, hunger, and loss of weight ( Diabetes Mellitus). This disease not
only impacts the amounts of sugar in the blood, it also has lasting effects on the rest of the body.
Diabetes impacts the body and its systems negatively if the body s blood sugarlevels are not treated
or maintained properly.
In the body there are twelve different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Type one is characterized as an autoimmune disease, because the body targets it s own beta cells
in the pancreas. The beta cells are cells that produce insulin for the entire body. The body stops
making insulin, causing people to become insulin dependent. An insulin dependent person would
use insulin injections or an insulin pump ordinarily to manage their sugar levels. Type two
diabetes is different. The body of a type two diabetic no longer responds to the body made insulin.
Beta cells destroy themselves from the overproduction of insulin because the cells themselves try
to compensate for the deficiency of insulin. Type two is either treated without medications like
exercise and diet or with insulin tablets. But, there are some occurrences in which insulin injections
would be needed ( Differences Between Type 1 and Type 2 ). Both types are dangerous if not
monitored, and cause the circulatory system to

Personal Values
Personal Values Development
Personal Values Development The development of personal values occurs over a lifetime of
living and experiences. What are personal values? What sources shape and influence those
values? What criteria and decision making may be used to reshape our personal values? What
impact do personal values have in the workplace and on workplace performance? This paper will
address these issues from a personal perspective.
Personal Values What are personal values? First, many often confuse values and ethics. The terms
are not interchangeable but they also do not exist separately from each other. Ethics refers to
standards of conduct that indicate how one should behave based on moral duties and virtues derived

Schools are not value neutral environments and are committed to teaching the value of truth.
Cheating is not condoned and consequences result when caught. Teachers are role models of
behavior and reasoning by the actions they display in their classroom and the structure which they
establish for their students. Each of these things will play a role in the development of personal
values. As children become more active and involved in school, the sphere of influence widens
further. Friends, team mates, school organizations, sports activities, and clubs are examples of
influence that continue to mold our value system. Entering the workforce further provides
opportunities for our values to be shaped by those surrounding us. Everyone is affected by the
culture and values of the companies they work with. Coworkers, managers, and the company s
executives all have the opportunity to participate in the on going process of influencing and
shaping the values of those around them. Professional organizations and civic activities will also
play a role in the on going development of personal values.
Do Personal Values Change? A person s values will change as they get older. With aging, maturity
and life experiences, an individual may develop a new and perhaps different understanding of his
or her own personal values. What was seemingly important as a child may not be as important as an
adult. At

Importance Of The Colosseum
The functions religious or otherwise, of the colosseum were irrelevant to the ultimate design of the
architecture.
Once the colosseum had been built it seems to have become the model for many, if not most, of
those that followed (Hopkins and Beard 2005, 24). The Colosseum stands proudly upon the
villainous Emperor Nero s once grand Valley of the Golden House, projecting the munificence of
Imperial Roman Architecture of the Flavian period. Its ultimate design could be said to be formed
through purpose or function. However, this does not do justice to the importance of architecture
within Roman society (Thornton and Thornton in Lyes 1999, 2). The functions whether it be
religious or otherwise, of the Colosseum were irrelevant to the ... Show more content on

The diameter of the entire Colosseum was thus reduced and convention disregarded to take into
consideration this architectural feature. Looking in detail at the classical orders themselves which
made up the levels of the façade and the 80 grand entrances of the Colosseum it would appear to
not be revolutionary. However, if you engage with the architecture closer it reveals further Roman
architectural ingenuity and the importance of the structures appearance.
Traditionally Roman buildings saw the use of the classical Greek Doric order on ground levels
(without bases) with the more decorative orders of Ionic and Corinthian stacked above this
(Lyes 1999, 6). However, in the Colosseum these orders were stacked and used in a way which
had no previous precedent in Roman architecture (Lyes 1999, 6). The design sees the orders
dramatically reduced, which has the columns that are engaged within the structure constructed
with bases, and the column shaft themselves missing the usual entasis of classic Greek orders,
this all leads to a much simplified capital. Between each stacked order there is a triple facia
architrave, a relatively plain designed freeze and cornice (Lyes 1999, 6). The use of the classical
orders in this manner within the design of the Colosseum, without precedent, was in fact not
structural but a façade or veneer. This allowed the

Religion is a key part of the lives of Sioux people. They believe everything has a spirit, therefore,
their land has a spirit that should not be broken. The Sioux people have lived off of the land
through the vegetation and hunting game. By bulldozing and violating their land, the
government is tearing apart their lives and their spirits. The land and the spirits are incredibly
sacred that when death comes, the spirits are allowed to go on to a spirit world. During death,
the tribe members mourn the deceased heavily and bury them in the earth, under rocks or trees,
and sometimes leave them out in the case of fallen warriors. Along with the bodies being sacred,
the deceased s belongings are also sacred and are usually buried with the body to help their
journey to the spirit world. Many government officials are unaware of the practices of the Sioux
people. This ignorance leads to the belief that since we do not know it is wrong, it is not wrong. As
a result, the construction and digging up of land is ruining the burial sites of Sioux people from
hundreds of years ago. After this forum and searching for more knowledge about the pipeline

Essay Theory of the Absurd
According to critic Mark Esslin, the concept of Theatre of the Absurd relates to the playwrights
loosely grouped under the label of the absurd attempt to convey their sense of bewilderment,
anxiety, and wonder in the face of an inexplicable universe ( The Theatre ). Esslin stressed the fact
that plays and stories belonging to the Theatre of the Absurd were composed of situations dealing
with the way a humanreacts to an event, without any form of importance, thus only stressing over
insignificant things and rejecting the notion of logic. Albert Camus, a major writer of the Theatre of
the Absurd , construes the Absurd by completely varying this concept through the human

This act depicts that there is no true point to human life. While Meursault is a strong believer of
this concept, humanity attempts to form reasonable justifications for an insane wrongdoing. In the
story, Meursault states that The truth is I never have much to say. I just keep quiet (Camus 104).
Thus, by Meursault statement, Camus stresses the absurdity of silence as the prosecution unravels
why Meursault committed murder of the Arab. The Stranger opens up with a simple quote:
Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don t know. I got a telegram from the home: Mother
deceased. Funeral tomorrow. Faithfully yours. That doesn t mean anything. Maybe it was yesterday
(Camus 3). This abrupt and distinctive introduction expresses the attitude that Meursault possesses
that there is simply no meaning to life as a whole a true stranger to the world. Furthermore, the
trial in which Meursault partakes is absurd in itself because the judge, prosecutors, and jury try to
find meaning where there is none to be found ( Albert ).
Moreover, Meursault implies that fact that he does not have any particular reason to live, and
death is the only way to go. His apathy and indifference about life further reveal the absurd in this
novel. According to McCarthy, Meursault is not truly saddened by his mother s death because in
his mind, death is an unavoidable force mankind is destined to die. During Meursault s mother s

Representation In Heart Of Darkness Essay
The Others Representation in Conrad s Heart of Darkness
Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness is one of the most known novels in English literature. The
story begins when Marlow, who works for a Belgian company, went on a journey to the heart of
Africa as a steamship captain. Through his journey, he heard the name of Kurtz for the first time.
Then the name is repeated many times, which made Marlow, who is our narrator in addition to
another unknown narrator, interested to know about Kurtz. Kurtz works for the company as an
ivory trader in the Congo which was at that time one of Belgium s colonies. According to Marlow
Kurtz was the ideal English man, or as what he called him a remarkable man , who holds the
banner of civilization. Marlow s dream ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Or does it belong to the company? I think it belongs to the Congo and to the Congolese. Neither
Kurtz nor the company has the right to claim that the ivory belongs to him.
Finally, I believe that Conrad s Heart of Darkness embodies racism to Africa and for women, in
which both are ignorant, silenced and nameless. Conrad s sympathy with Africans under the
colonization of Belgium, does not give him the right to represent them and to celebrate English
Imperialism. Albeit that people of Africa have different skin color or different shape from the
European, they are still human beings and no one has the right to dehumanize them.
Chinua Achebe in his essay An Image of Africa asks not to consider Conrad s Heart of Darkness as
one of the best English novels, because the Africans suffer for a very long time by the
dehumanization and by the European s representation of them. Chinua Achebe states that:
I am talking about a book which parades in the most vulgar fashion prejudices and insults from
which a section of mankind has suffered untold agonies and atrocities in the past and continues to
do so in many ways and many places today. I am talking about a story in which the very humanity
of black people is called in question.

Major Discoveries in Electrical Communication in the 1800’s
The nineteenth century was a very prolific era of discovery in electrical knowledge and
technologies that laid the foundation for modern electrical communication. During this period of
time the foundations of modern electrically based technologies were discovered. The nineteenth
century began with a debate between Luigi Galvani, and Alessandro Volta regarding the source of
electricityin Galvani s famous frog experiment. These debates lead to the invention of the battery
by Volta, and the invention of Volta s. Volta s discoveries would lead the way for Ohm s law
several years later. However, before that discovery was made Hans Christian Г rstead discovered
electromagnetism, which was then used by AndrГ© Marie AmperГЁ to show that magnetism...

Galvani noticed that when a metal scalpel was brought close one of the nerves in the frog that the
frog s leg would move. Galvani stated that the electricity observed in the frogs was intrinsic the
nerves of the frog. Galvani used multiple different metals combinations to demonstrate the electric
phenomenon. He would further demonstrate that metals were seemingly unneeded. He did this by
manipulating the nerves and muscles of the frogs in such way that caused the same twitch, as
when a metal object was brought near. The publication of his research in 1791 would peak the
interest of Alessandro Volta. Volta was convinced that Galvani s animal electricity was not the
result of the animal tissues, but the metals within those tissues. In an effort to prove this Volta
invented the battery . Volta s battery was built out of alternating zinc and copper disks with cloth
(or a similar medium) soaked in salt water [10]. Volta stated the following regarding the nature of
electricity with respect to Galvani s animal electricity: Herein lies the whole secret, the whole
magic of Galvanism. It is simply an artificial electricity, which acts under the impulse of contacts
between different conductors [9]. At this point Volta s theory of electricity by contact was fully
accepted. Just after Volta s greatest discovery and before that of Ohm, Hans Christian Г rstead
discovered magnetism. Г rstead conducted a series of experiments that

Analysis Of The Singer Solution To World Poverty By Peter...
Poverty in Children
Peter Singer the author of the story The Singer Solution to World Poverty which talks about how
humans are selfish and spend their extra money on luxuries instead of donating it to charities to
help starving children. Singer rambles back and forth how greedy we are and tries to make us feel
guilty for those innocent starving children. Children that we suddenly have to care about just
because they re almost dead Children are the ones to care about in this situation instead of spending
our money on whatever we want we have to spend it on children you might as well have children of
your own if you re doing that. In a way when you donate money to a charity you re just giving up
your extra but like having a child your giving up extra for others Why would I give my hard earned
cash to some five year old across the planet when someone closer and richer could do the same and
let me be so I can enjoy my wealth. I agree but I also disagree with Singer that the starving children
need to be saved, but I don t think this is the right solution to fixing the problem because it can
cause more problems for everyone over a course of years.
Singer is just trying to persuade us by saying children are starving do something don t be selfish
and keep your money on you it makes you look bad I don t really see it as bad if you re being smart

Cardiac Rhabdomyomatous Dysplasia in a Heifer Essays

This report is about an incidental finding during slaughter inspection of the heart in a heifer from a

several types of heart tissues, all of them immature, disordered and, out of proportion. The most
conspicuous was a disperse population of large, vacuolated and PAS positive cells, forming
islands, enmeshed in excessive fibrous connective tissue. These cells were identified as abnormal

During the red offal inspection in an abattoir for slaughter bovines, an alteration inside the right
free ventricular wall in a heart was recognized. The affected heart belonged to a commercial
cross heifer from a feedlot. The heart was condemned and the lesion was trimmed for subsequent
examination. Apart from a congested liver that passed inspection, other lesions were not
recognized in the carcass. The official veterinarian thought that the heart lesion could be a scar.
Two samples fixed by immersion in 10% buffered formalin, were submitted to the pathology lab.
The samples were processed routinely, embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 4 Вµm and stained by
H E. Furthermore, special stains such as PAS, Masson trichrome, and Giemsa were carried out.
Macroscopically the lesion was whitish to grayish, more obvious from the endocardial side and
not well defined at edges. The lesion was rhomboidal with dimensions 4 cm width and 5 cm long.
The lesion was smooth on surface, mobile and extensible as part of myocardium. The myocardium
affected was almost entirely the whole wall, including papillary muscles and

What Does The Globalization Of Drug Trade Benefit...
To what extent does the globalization of drug trade benefit countries in the golden triangle and
South America? The two sources I choose to evaluate was a letter to the president of Peru and a
335 page book about drug trafficking around the world. Both of these sources provide valuable
information to my research question.
The letter to the president of Peru was from H.E. Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde who is the
minister of foreign affairs in Peru. This letter was created at the General Debate of 64th Period of
Sessions of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, on the twenty eighth of september
2009. Because the letter was a primary source it has no known or thought of limitations. The
purpose of the letter was to inform the president about the drug trade problem in Peru and its
effects on the country. It was only made for his eyes to see but was then release to the public
with none of it changed on the United Nations website. There are no limitations for its purpose
because the letter was not a cry for help, made Peru look weak and was made to inform the
president. This source is valuable because it is primary and shows exactly what is going on in
South America. The author is also trustworth, qualifies to write about drug trade and not biased.

They worked furiously to isolate polonium and radium and when they were successful credit was

Taking a Look at Best Buy
Synopsis
When one envisions an electronic company, Best Buy generally comes to mind. It is just like
Nike or Coca Cola. Founded in 1966, this company was formally known as Sound of Music
(Hoffman, 2010, p.24 2). It was mainly a retailer of audio components. However, in the early
1980s, Best Buy began to add additional products. It was not uncommon for the next 30 years for
more products to be added as technology advanced. In 1983, the company changed its name to Best
Buy Co. and operated as a superstore (Hoffman, 2010, p.24 2). The entire look of this company
was changing drastically. This would include the sales staff as well. Originally, the staff had
worked on a commission based salary. However, in 1989, this structure was eliminated and sales
associates transformed into educators that assisted customers in learning about the products offered
in the stores (Hoffman, 2010, p.24 2). Basically, the customer took control and the employees were
there as guidance. The idea of having control in buying electronics became more common as the
technology developed. In order to let the consumer have more control, the company expanded
further by developing and releasing BestBuy.com. This website was launched in 2000 to give
customers a choice between visiting a physical store and purchasing products online (Hoffman,
2010, p.24 2).

How Did Donald Trump Change The World
The year I was born had many extraordinary things that happened and it was a great year. I m sure
every other year was the same way too. It s crazy to see that I ve been on this earth for 18 years
almost, and so much has changed since the year I was born. Technology has truly changed and
advanced our world. We went from 480p quality to OLED and 4k TV s, which is like looking at
the real thing. To add on that, now we have Donald Trump as our president. Yes... Donald Trump.
I bet you in 2000, Donald Trump would be the last person people would expect to be the
president. It is clear that in the past 17 years, our world and the things around us have
exceedingly changed. In the year 2000, teens would be trying to find anyway to get to the mall;
just to be at the mall. The environment of being there would make kids feel cool . Also, they
would be texting each other on their motorola flip phones, worrying about going over their text
message limit. the most popular movie was Mission: Impossible 2. The main character was Tom
cruise, and he has been starring in the mission impossible movies until this day. The average
price of a ticket was $5.39. Now for an adult ticket, it costs around $11.50. The Nobel prize for
Literature that year went to Gao Xingjian. The Nobel Peace prize went to Kim Dae Jung. The
Nobel prize for physics went to Zhores Ivanovich Alferov and Herbert Kroemer from Russia and
Germany for developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high speed and optoelectronics.
The sensation this created was big. But it didn t stop the planets from spinning, on and on, year by
year. In the 2000 s, the average cost of a house was around 140k,... Show more content on

Cultural Mobility In America
In the United States, there were many immigrants, and there were opportunities to get jobs for
immigrants. Therefore, many immigrants believed that they spend better life in the U.S. than they
spend life in the home country. It is very important that cultural and social mobility increase in
citizens, especially poor people, and I foresee a timewhen I will be economically mobile for several
reasons.
Cultural mobility is closely related to people s life. Cultural mobility provides entrance to various
institutions, goods, services, and practices (Beato 350). Nowadays, cultural mobility is increasing
in the U.S. because technology is developing, and technology development helps to improve
cultural mobility. Increasing cultural mobility helps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the United States, in the past, social mobility was low, so poor people were not able to move
out of poverty. For example, a poor parents child becomes a poor adult because parents do not
have enough money for a child s education. Likewise, A child born into a low income home hears
30 million fewer words than a child from a well off family (Obama 342). As a result, a child is
not educated, and a child cannot get a job that earns an average income, so this awful cycle
continues. However, some presidents solved social issues for poor people. Abraham Lincoln
started a system of land grant colleges all over this country so that any poor man s son could go
learn something new (Obama 339). Also, When millions died without health insurance, LBJ
fought for Medicare and Medicaid (Obama 339). Therefore, social mobility started to increase.
Some new jobs appeared, and it also helped to increase social mobility. As a result, citizens life
became better and better. People call this environment the American Dream. The American dream
is that if you work hard, you have a chance to get achieve (Obama 338).
However, Barack Obama argues that social mobility is decreasing recently. Also, Decreasing
mobility poses a fundamental threat to the American dream (Obama 341). He thinks the
American Dream is disappearing. However, Obama s argument is not correct because social
mobility is increasing bit by bit. Two Harvard economists, two Berkeley economists, and one U.S.
Treasury economist failed to find decreasing economic mobility (Beato 349). For example, people
s average income is higher than before generation s average income, so the American Dream is not

The Clay Marble Essay
Having courage is a trait that helps everyone. Many people are born with courage and don t need
to learn how to gain it. In The Clay Marble by Minfong Ho, the main character, Dara, is
exceedingly scared at the beginning of the story and doesn t have much courage. Throughout the
story, Dara is forced to become brave, find her family, and get rid of her fears, ultimately
demonstrating true courage. In the beginning of the story, Dara was especially scared because of
the genocide and had trouble adapting to her new lifestyle. When Dara, her brother, Sarun, and
their mother first reached the Nong Chan refugee camp, Dara was tinged with fright, hesitation,
and the lack of courage to live in a new way. As Dara wakes up on her first full day at Nong
Chan, she states, Quietly I walked over to them [Nea (her friend) and Mom] and sat down in my
mother s lap. With her warmth behind me, and the flames in front of me, I felt snug and secure,
(pg. 23 24). This supports my claim because it shows that Dara likes to be secure. When her entire
life is shaken up, she feels she needs that security back. That security, for her, was found in her
mother. At this point in the the story, Dara made no attempt to make new friends or do anything
besides be right by her mother. As the storyline moved on, Dara started to show... Show more

At this part of the story, Dara searched for her family day in and day out, and even into nightfall
. OneThis evening, Dara was searching for her family and continued to do so even though the sun
had set. The dangers of searching in the unsafe darkness include capture and even death. Dara
says, I continued looking [and searching] even after the sun had set, (pg. 72) This quote supports
Dara s increasing bravery because it shows Dara being incredibly courageous and having the will
to find her family, even on the brink of

A Comparison of Homeric Formalism in The Iliad and The...
Homeric Formalism in The Iliad and The Odyssey
Much that is terrible takes place in the Homeric poems, but it seldom takes place wordlessly... no
speech is so filled with anger or scorn that the particles which express logical and grammatical
connections are lacking or out of place. (from Odysseus Scar by Erich Auerbach)
In his immaculately detailed study comparing the narrative styles of Homer to those of the Bible,
Erich Auerbach hits upon one of the most notable intrigues of reading Homer, namely his
unrelenting sense of epic form and rhythm. The stories that unfold in the works of Homer are filled
with passion and fury, but this never effects the meticulous regulation of his narrative. One of the

To take the death of Phereklos as an illustration: first, we are told Meriones in turn killed
Phereklos... (Bk V. ln. 59). Then we are given a description of his death:
... Meriones pursued [Phereklos] and overtaking him struck in the right buttock, and the spearhead
drove straight on and passing under the bone went into the bladder. He dropped, screaming, to his
knees, and death was a mist about him. (Book V, lns. 65 68)
Although the deaths of major characters are more elaborate and detailed, the basic structural pattern
remains the same. The death of Patroklos for example is much embellished, but the basic formula
approach, attack, wound, and finally the mist of death remains recognizable. The use of what is
essentially a template for the description of death in battle could serve one of two purposes. The
fact that the deaths in The Iliad and the final battle scene of The Odyssey become so many carbon
copies of one another, predictable almost to the point of absurdity, perhaps reflects a poet s
judgment of war. Homer goes to such elaborate lengths to depict the immensity of the enterprise
and the sweat and hardship of battle, that one can t help but sense, hidden within this repeated
formulaic expression of dying, a commentary upon death as the ultimate equalizer. Conversely, the
methodical treatment of death could simply be an indication of Homer s

Nevertheless, the source is stating that it will be a comic story of three men. Also, Last Flag
Flying says about aging along with a road trip aspect. The source also addresses that the dead
body aspect is inspired from Little Miss Sunshine. Let s see, if Linklater succeeds to impress
audience as well as critics this time.
Collider says the Last Flag Flying will be landed by Amazon Studios. Linklater is collaborating
with the stream giant for the first time. Amazon Studios backed The Neon Demon and CafГ©
Society this year. According to Collider, it will be a major win for Amazon. Moreover, the source
is hoping that Last Flag Flying will be another entertaining, personal, and culturally alert movie
from Linklater.
Linklater was planning to adopt Ponicsan s follow up into a movie back in 2006. He wanted to
reunite Randy Quaid and Jack Nicholson along with Morgan Freeman. Freeman was selected for
Otis Young s part, who died in 2001.
Fishburne, who recently starred in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, will be seen in
Passengers soon. While Carrel is doing Battle of the Sexes, Cranston will be seen in a lot of movies

  • 2. Analysis Of The Film Natural Born Killers The 20th century was arguably the most grotesque and violent period of modern contemporary human existence. The 20th century witnessed the horrors of the first modern wars between World War 2, The Vietnam War, and the Korean War just to name a few. The unnerving reality of possible nuclear detonation as The Cold Warprogressed put the American populace in a state of constant fear over an imminent nuclear holocaust. The 20th centuryalso saw the birth of many infamous serial killers in its later half such as Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, O.J Simpson, and many other homicidal psychopaths. The glaring irony of the 20th century is how mankind becomes more violent as it progresses; the more we humans advance the tools of destruction, the more likely we are to implement them, killing exponentially more each time we progress as one would logically imagine our primal instincts would become suppressed as humanity evolves. A century built on gore and violence inspired many theatrical depictions of the events that had occurred within the 20th century, but the quintessential film satirizing the 20th century whilst still also portraying a symbolic message would be Natural Born Killers by the legendary cinematic director, Oliver Stone. Stone s film Natural Born Killers symbolizes the 20th s century s murderous history and humanity s unsettling fascination and obsession with death and murder. Natural Born Killers is not only a satirization of the massive amount of death in the 20th ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Poetry of Billy Collins Essay The Poetry of Billy Collins In 2001 a new poet laureate was crowned and a new voice; the voice of a poetic everyman was heard by many for the first time. That voice belonged to Billy Collins. Collins was born into a working class Bronx couple, and grew up in a typical middle class neighborhood where he went to church on Sundays and listened to jazz music in his free time. This middle class background and sensibilities are reflected in his poetic style and themes, and in his desire to bring poetry back into the American main stream by making it more accessible to the average reader. Billy Collins was born March 22, 1941 in Queens, New York. He was born into a middle class family. His parents were of Irish descent, and had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1997 Billy Collins married Diane Olbright, who he had met while attending the University of California at Riverside. When they married she was the host of ABC s Wide World of Sports , she is currently an architect. Many things have had a large influenced Collins poetry. Religious faith has a particularly large impact. Billy grew up in a highly religious Irish Catholic family, and was taught how to live a good Christian life. Collins, however, is not as deeply religious as his parents, but still continues to be Catholic for the sake of continuity, and respect toward his parents (Press). Many of Collins poems center around the ideas of religion; in fact, his book The Afterlife is dedicated solely to religious themes. Jazz has also influenced Billy Collins poetry. He grew up listening to jazz, and many of his poems are about his love for this music (Mazin). The works of other poets have also influenced Collins writing. Although he certainly has his own unique style of writing, the influence of Elizabethan metaphysical poetry is evident Collins particularly admires the works of George Herbert and John Donne (Billy Collins). George Herbert uses homely and every day images in his poetry as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Representation of Women in Snow White, Sonnet 130 and... The representation of females in literary Works is a polemical issue. They have often been associated with a misogynistic stereotype. I have chosen three literary texts to compare the descriptions of women; Snow White , Sonnet 130 by William Shakespeare and The Rape of the Lock by Alexander Pope. This will draw attention to the way that women are often portrayed as we see the common ingredients in their descriptions, as well as any potential differences between them. In both Snow White and The Rape of the Lock women are portrayed as vain and obsessed with their beauty. The speaker in The Rape of the Lock condemns the girl described, Belinda, for her obsession with appearances by mocking her through the use of hyperbole, for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We can see a clear contrast in the description of Little Snow White and the mistress from Sonnet 130 , to the point that they are almost the antithesis of each other. An example of this is their skin. Little Snow White is said to be white as snow (line 8), whereas the sonnet says If snow be white, why then [the mistress ] breasts are dun (line 3). Another example is their cheeks, where the mistress is said to have no such roses (line 6) in her cheeks, Little Snow White is described as rosy as blood ( line 8). Finally there is a distinct variation in the description of their hair, although in both cases black, Little Snow White s is described as being black as ebony (line 9) where the mistress hair is said to be black wires , the choice of simile is extremely different, ebony being a luxurious and presumably beautiful material and wires being supposedly common and ugly. The three portrayals of female beauty are conflicting, with Belinda s being purely artificial, like a faГ§ade, Little Snow White s being natural, and the mistress being apparently non existent. With these descriptions go three opposing perceptions of women. The first two are extremely misogynistic; The Rape of the Lock ridicules them as vain, shallow people, Snow White objectifies them by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Yes, if no one screws up you made it to the finish line of a happily ever after . Love is such a crazy thing, one day is alive and growing and the next is fading until it completely dies. Everyone will have their own view on love, but love is vague, for one knows about today but not about tomorrow. In her critique of love, Against Love, Laura Kipnis offers a judgmental version of what constitutes real love . She questions whether we truly desire love, or rather, are conditioned to. She asserts that social forms accustomed us to pursue a love life so that we are entertained and wanted. But everyone has a different opinion on the matter. In his short story, What We Talk about When We Talk about Love, Raymond Carver tells the story of four different individuals in which he explores the perceptions of love by referring to their beliefs and experiences. One of the four characters, Mel, seems to have an unclear perspective on love himself as he questions his love life and asserts that everyone is entitled to look for love when is missing. If Mel was to have a conversation with Kipnis they would agree and disagree on certain ideas, for they both are able to understand the complexity of the matter. Since sense data can deceive you, Descartes could not trust things he saw, heard, or felt. • 15. The Role Of Ecological Validity Of A Research Study On Memory This essay will be looking at the role of ecological validity and the importance it has in psychological research. Ecological validity refers to the extent to which a study reflects naturally occurring or everyday situations. It will also consider the advantages and disadvantages of ecological validity, through exploring studies such as the bobo doll experiment and a study on memory. Ecological validity is one of many important factor in psychological research. Also being addressed is what goes into a study or experiment and all the things that need to be considered to achieve ecological validity. In addition, it is important to design the study in such a way that the results obtained can be usefully and meaningfully applied to the area in question. Constructing experiments that achieve high ecological validity is quite a complex and difficult task. When conducting a study or experiment there are lots of issues that researchers and psychologists need to consider. Making good decisions on features like conditions can make all the difference between a poor research study and one that contributes significantly to new knowledge. The more researchers try to control a study or experiment, the less ecological validity it tends to have. Studies or experiments that have high ecological validity allows psychologists to generalise the findings which shows how behaviour is affected in real life. A negative drawback from a study with high ecological validity is that it is very hard to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One can argue that William Wordsworthbelieves that memory can be utilized as an anecdote that is able to cure someone s pain, while a writer such as Thomas Hardy would disapprove of this Wordsworthian ideal by believing that memory is simply a shroud of gray (Vernooy). This claim can be supported as true when Wordsworth s Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey is examined more closely. Within this piece, Wordsworth states, These beauteous forms /Through a long absence, have not been to me/As is a landscape to a blind man s eye/But oft, in lonely rooms, and mid the din/Of towns and cities, I have owed to them/In hours of weariness, sensations sweet (Wordsworth 23 27). Here, Wordsworth provides a detailed description about how nature is able to provide a safe haven for him in a time when Britain s cities are looking to industrialize more than ever. By personifying nature during this time of economic crisis, Wordsworth is creating an outlet that aids him in moving forward. Conversely, Thomas Hardy encompasses the idea of nature and memory by almost insulting Wordsworth. For instance, Hardy would argue that one cannot sit on the couch and rekindle old memories in order to transgress, but instead, one needs to be out and about in order to gather as many physical memories as humanly possible. The beta cells are cells that produce insulin for the entire body. The body stops making insulin, causing people to become insulin dependent. The body of a type two diabetic no longer responds to the body made insulin. Beta cells destroy themselves from the overproduction of insulin because the cells themselves try to compensate for the deficiency of insulin. Type two is either treated without medications like exercise and diet or with insulin tablets. Once the colosseum had been built it seems to have become the model for many, if not most, of those that followed (Hopkins and Beard 2005, 24). The Colosseum stands proudly upon the villainous Emperor Nero s once grand Valley of the Golden House, projecting the munificence of Imperial Roman Architecture of the Flavian period. Its ultimate design could be said to be formed through purpose or function. The diameter of the entire Colosseum was thus reduced and convention disregarded to take into consideration this architectural feature. Looking in detail at the classical orders themselves which made up the levels of the faГ§ade and the 80 grand entrances of the Colosseum it would appear to not be revolutionary. However, if you engage with the architecture closer it reveals further Roman architectural ingenuity and the importance of the structures appearance. Traditionally Roman buildings saw the use of the classical Greek Doric order on ground levels (without bases) with the more decorative orders of Ionic and Corinthian stacked above this (Lyes 1999, 6). However, in the Colosseum these orders were stacked and used in a way which had no previous precedent in Roman architecture (Lyes 1999, 6). The design sees the orders dramatically reduced, which has the columns that are engaged within the structure constructed with bases, and the column shaft themselves missing the usual entasis of classic Greek orders, this all leads to a much simplified capital. Between each stacked order there is a triple facia architrave, a relatively plain designed freeze and cornice (Lyes 1999, 6). The use of the classical orders in this manner within the design of the Colosseum, without precedent, was in fact not structural but a faГ§ade or veneer. This allowed the ... Essay Theory of the Absurd According to critic Mark Esslin, the concept of Theatre of the Absurd relates to the playwrights loosely grouped under the label of the absurd attempt to convey their sense of bewilderment, anxiety, and wonder in the face of an inexplicable universe ( The Theatre ). Esslin stressed the fact that plays and stories belonging to the Theatre of the Absurd were composed of situations dealing with the way a humanreacts to an event, without any form of importance, thus only stressing over insignificant things and rejecting the notion of logic. In the story, Meursault states that The truth is I never have much to say. I just keep quiet (Camus 104). Thus, by Meursault statement, Camus stresses the absurdity of silence as the prosecution unravels why Meursault committed murder of the Arab. The Stranger opens up with a simple quote: Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don t know. I got a telegram from the home: Mother deceased. Funeral tomorrow. Faithfully yours. That doesn t mean anything. Maybe it was yesterday (Camus 3). This abrupt and distinctive introduction expresses the attitude that Meursault possesses that there is simply no meaning to life as a whole a true stranger to the world. Furthermore, the trial in which Meursault partakes is absurd in itself because the judge, prosecutors, and jury try to find meaning where there is none to be found ( Albert ). Moreover, Meursault implies that fact that he does not have any particular reason to live, and death is the only way to go. His apathy and indifference about life further reveal the absurd in this novel. According to McCarthy, Meursault is not truly saddened by his mother s death because in his mind, death is an unavoidable force mankind is destined to die. During Meursault s mother s funeral, ... The story begins when Marlow, who works for a Belgian company, went on a journey to the heart of Africa as a steamship captain. Through his journey, he heard the name of Kurtz for the first time. Then the name is repeated many times, which made Marlow, who is our narrator in addition to another unknown narrator, interested to know about Kurtz. Conrad s sympathy with Africans under the colonization of Belgium, does not give him the right to represent them and to celebrate English Imperialism. Albeit that people of Africa have different skin color or different shape from the European, they are still human beings and no one has the right to dehumanize them. Chinua Achebe in his essay An Image of Africa asks not to consider Conrad s Heart of Darkness as one of the best English novels, because the Africans suffer for a very long time by the dehumanization and by the European s representation of them. Major Discoveries in Electrical Communication in the 1800’s The nineteenth century was a very prolific era of discovery in electrical knowledge and technologies that laid the foundation for modern electrical communication. During this period of time the foundations of modern electrically based technologies were discovered. The nineteenth century began with a debate between Luigi Galvani, and Alessandro Volta regarding the source of electricityin Galvani s famous frog experiment. These debates lead to the invention of the battery by Volta, and the invention of Volta s. Volta s discoveries would lead the way for Ohm s law several years later. He would further demonstrate that metals were seemingly unneeded. He did this by manipulating the nerves and muscles of the frogs in such way that caused the same twitch, as when a metal object was brought near. The publication of his research in 1791 would peak the interest of Alessandro Volta. Volta was convinced that Galvani s animal electricity was not the result of the animal tissues, but the metals within those tissues. In an effort to prove this Volta invented the battery . Volta s battery was built out of alternating zinc and copper disks with cloth (or a similar medium) soaked in salt water [10]. Volta stated the following regarding the nature of electricity with respect to Galvani s animal electricity: Herein lies the whole secret, the whole magic of Galvanism. It is simply an artificial electricity, which acts under the impulse of contacts between different conductors [9]. At this point Volta s theory of electricity by contact was fully accepted. It is very important that cultural and social mobility increase in citizens, especially poor people, and I foresee a timewhen I will be economically mobile for several reasons. Cultural mobility is closely related to people s life. Cultural mobility provides entrance to various institutions, goods, services, and practices (Beato 350). Nowadays, cultural mobility is increasing in the U.S. because technology is developing, and technology development helps to improve cultural mobility. Increasing cultural mobility helps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the United States, in the past, social mobility was low, so poor people were not able to move out of poverty. For example, a poor parents child becomes a poor adult because parents do not have enough money for a child s education. Likewise, A child born into a low income home hears 30 million fewer words than a child from a well off family (Obama 342). As a result, a child is not educated, and a child cannot get a job that earns an average income, so this awful cycle continues. However, some presidents solved social issues for poor people. Abraham Lincoln started a system of land grant colleges all over this country so that any poor man s son could go learn something new (Obama 339). Also, When millions died without health insurance, LBJ fought for Medicare and Medicaid (Obama 339). Therefore, social mobility started to increase. Some new jobs appeared, and it also helped to increase social mobility. As a result, citizens life became better and better. People call this environment the American Dream. The American dream is that if you work hard, you have a chance to get achieve (Obama 338). However, Barack Obama argues that social mobility is decreasing recently. Also, Decreasing mobility poses a fundamental threat to the American dream (Obama 341). He thinks the American Dream is disappearing. However, Obama s argument is not correct because social mobility is increasing bit by bit. Two Harvard economists, two Berkeley economists, and one U.S. Treasury economist failed to find decreasing economic mobility (Beato 349). For example, people s average income is higher than before generation s average income, so the American Dream is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. The Clay Marble Essay Having courage is a trait that helps everyone. Many people are born with courage and don t need to learn how to gain it. In The Clay Marble by Minfong Ho, the main character, Dara, is exceedingly scared at the beginning of the story and doesn t have much courage. Throughout the story, Dara is forced to become brave, find her family, and get rid of her fears, ultimately demonstrating true courage. In the beginning of the story, Dara was especially scared because of the genocide and had trouble adapting to her new lifestyle. When Dara, her brother, Sarun, and their mother first reached the Nong Chan refugee camp, Dara was tinged with fright, hesitation, and the lack of courage to live in a new way. As Dara wakes up on her first full day at Nong Chan, she states, Quietly I walked over to them [Nea (her friend) and Mom] and sat down in my mother s lap. With her warmth behind me, and the flames in front of me, I felt snug and secure, (pg. 23 24). This supports my claim because it shows that Dara likes to be secure. When her entire life is shaken up, she feels she needs that security back. That security, for her, was found in her mother. At this point in the the story, Dara made no attempt to make new friends or do anything besides be right by her mother. As the storyline moved on, Dara started to show... • 45. A Comparison of Homeric Formalism in The Iliad and The... Homeric Formalism in The Iliad and The Odyssey Much that is terrible takes place in the Homeric poems, but it seldom takes place wordlessly... no speech is so filled with anger or scorn that the particles which express logical and grammatical connections are lacking or out of place. (from Odysseus Scar by Erich Auerbach) In his immaculately detailed study comparing the narrative styles of Homer to those of the Bible, Erich Auerbach hits upon one of the most notable intrigues of reading Homer, namely his unrelenting sense of epic form and rhythm. The stories that unfold in the works of Homer are filled with passion and fury, but this never effects the meticulous regulation of his narrative. One of the chief ... Then we are given a description of his death: ... Meriones pursued [Phereklos] and overtaking him struck in the right buttock, and the spearhead drove straight on and passing under the bone went into the bladder. He dropped, screaming, to his knees, and death was a mist about him. (Book V, lns. 65 68) Although the deaths of major characters are more elaborate and detailed, the basic structural pattern remains the same. The death of Patroklos for example is much embellished, but the basic formula approach, attack, wound, and finally the mist of death remains recognizable. The use of what is essentially a template for the description of death in battle could serve one of two purposes. The fact that the deaths in The Iliad and the final battle scene of The Odyssey become so many carbon copies of one another, predictable almost to the point of absurdity, perhaps reflects a poet s judgment of war. Homer goes to such elaborate lengths to depict the immensity of the enterprise and the sweat and hardship of battle, that one can t help but sense, hidden within this repeated formulaic expression of dying, a commentary upon death as the ultimate equalizer. Conversely, the methodical treatment of death could simply be an indication of Homer s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
