Evolution Chapter 22
Name _______________________ Period _________
Chapter 22: Descent with Modification: A Darwinian View of Life
As you study this chapter, read several paragraphs at a time to catch the flow of ideas and understand
the reasoning that is being described. In some places, the text describes a narrative or story of events
that led to
Darwin s theory of evolution. Therefore, first read the narrative to absorb the big picture and then
return to answer the few questions that accompany this material.
Overview
1.
Define evolution broadly and then give a narrower definition, as discussed in the overview.
Evolution: Descent with modification; the idea that living species are descendants of ancestral species
that were different from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
inheritance of acquired characteristics: This idea states that an organism could pass these
modifications of use and disuse to its offspring.
8.
Although Lamarck s mechanism of evolution does not explain the changes in species over time, his
thinking has been influential. What is considered to be the great importance of his ideas? Lamarck
recognized that the match of organisms to their environments can be explained by gradual
evolutionary change rather than special creation.
Concept 22.2 Descent with modification by natural selection explains the adaptations of organisms
and the unity and diversity of life
9.
Charles Darwin proposed that the mechanism of evolution is natural selection and that it explains how
adaptations arise. What are adaptations? Give two examples of adaptations.
Adaptations are inherited characteristics of organisms that enhance their survival and reproduction in
specific environments. Possible examples include the mottled coloration of a fawn that allows it to
blend with its environment, or the sharp talons and beaks of birds of prey so well suited for predation.
10.
Explain the process of natural selection.
In the process of natural selection, individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and
reproduce at higher rates than other individuals because of those traits.

Essay On Reliability Of Visualization Tools
4.2 Reliability of visualization tools
Human factors study to evaluate a new interactive data integration platform for pediatric intensive
care called T3 that was conducted to identify interface usability issues, to measure ease of use, and to
describe interface features that may enable or hinder clinical tasks [2 cite the reference not number].
The key finding highlighted the low level of reliability placed by clinicians on data representations
since they did not know how they were established or derived. The study concluded that usability
issues, observed through contextual use, could lead to improvements in design of data integration
software.

Bioinformatics involves complex data visualization techniques that are technologically advanced and
therefore prone to cognitive overload. The study conducted to review current human factors research
in interaction, usability and visualization within bioinformatics, concluded that human factors play a
significant role in designing and evaluating information visualization tools. Perception of
bioinformatics tools by users goes a long way in influencing their understanding of the complex data
as well as the perceived usability and accessibility of these systems [3 cite the reference not number].
According to [10 cite the reference not number] cognitive overload has also been identified as an
EMR usability problem in evaluations conducted as part of some other studies. For example, Rose et
al. (2005) suggested that when the amount of information presented in an interface increases, user
attention is divided, as in multiple task performances, the probability of errors increases. Minimization
of cognitive load has been highlighted in a literature review of usability and safety in the electronic
medical records interface design. As per [1 cite the reference not number] cognitive overload was
often associated with responses of confusion and uncertainty, especially when participants had
multiple visual cues to focus on in the visual displays.
Additionally [2 cite the reference not number] research has shown that poorly designed technologies

The Cause Of Bizare s Short Stories
Florida can be a strange and scary place sometimes, and anyone who lives there understands the truth
of that statement. Bizarre stories show up on the local news every day that leave the public
questioning, What could have possibly been the cause of that? I can recall one of these abnormal and
somewhat surreal situations that happened not too long ago. It was later in the evening, and I was
driving down a quiet street in order to get to friend s birthday party. Out of the corner of eye, I saw
only what I could make out to be a younger man in his early twenties riding down the sidewalk on a
skateboard while wearing a purple Teletubby costume and smoking a cigarette. Because I have been a
resident of Florida my whole life, these strange situations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being a broke college student that has to go to school on a ratty old skateboard can be rough, and
anyone in a situation as miserable as his would look for a way to make some quick and easy cash to
help pay for tuition. After discovering his purple Teletubby costume from three Halloweens past, he
wrangled up a group of his friends to film an entire bootleg series of the Teletubbies. After a dreadful
week of nonstop filming, he and his buddies had re recorded a shoddy and budgeted version of the
children s show. On his way back to the grungy apartment he had been renting for the past month, he
figured he would use the long skateboard ride home for a smoke break to relieve the stress from a
rough week of filming. Much to his surprise, the poorly made videos had millions of views and
downloads by the time he arrived at his apartment. Due to the popularity, the federal government
quickly discovered the counterfeit videos and promptly arrested the actors. A few months later, the
broke college student was released from the county jail late in the evening. Since he had no other
clothes, there was no other choice but to wear the shameful Teletubby costume during his lengthy
skateboard ride home. Much to his relief, there was a singular cigarette in the inside pocket of the
costume, which he happily smoked all the while

The Protestant Ethic by Max Weber
The connection between economic life, rational self organisation and salvation are bought to life by
Max Weber in the Protestant Ethic. This paper will showcase the way in which these terms are related
to one another and it will explore this connection by drawing on what Weber refers to as the spirit of
capitalism . Let us begin by understanding the starting point of Weber s concerns for economic life.
It appears that Weber s interest is concerned with the development of modern life, more particularly
with the spirit of capitalism and the self organisation system ( Giddens, 1992:x). Weber is interested in
certain conduct and behaviour that is associated capitalism and economic lifestyles, this interest is
what allows Weber to explore the connection between economic life and Protestantism (Giddens,
1992:xi).
In order to fully understand the terms self organisation and salvation let us also understand what
Weber understood by the term the spirit of capitalism . Weber describes this term as a peculiar ethic in
which the aim is to seek an accumulation of capital, not necessarily for material purposes but also for
the sake of wealth itself (Giddens, 1992:xi). It is considered as a calculated pursuit of continuous
wealth accumulation and profit, it is this pursuit that is considered the essence of the spirit of
capitalism. It should be noted that this accumulation not be confused with greed but rather a rational
pursuit of profit (Giddens, 1992:xxxi). What we must also note

The Oversexualizing Of Women In Japanese Anime And Manga
The Oversexualizing of
Women in Japanese Anime and Manga The Japanese are a very creative culture which have produced
several fantastic science fiction movies such as Gojira, which was an allegory for the use of atomic
bombs in war to the animated cartoons, known as anime in America, like Space Battleship Yamato
which portrayed the story of all the nations of the planet Earth joining forces to defeat an alien
invasion. Yamato and other anime like Mach A Go Go had female characters in the shows that were
both allies and sometimes love interest to the main characters, but still were depicted as strong female
role models and were drawn with normal features and body types. However, as time has passed,
women in anime have been more and more sexualized and this has had an effect on how young people
look at Japanese culture and women in particular. In this paper, the effects of this practice will be
observed. With the anime boom of the last few years, the way women have been portrayed in these
animated cartoons has been more and more sexualized. Shows such as Fairy Tale depict the female
leads as scantily clad fighters with rather large breast. Even the youngest girl on the show that is
around the age of 11 to 12 is depicted with larger than normal breast. One of the main reasons for this
is the rather strong patriarchal view of women in Japan that is still there to this day. The article titled A

Increase And Decrease When Personal Income Tax Rates
14 2. a. Decrease. When personal income tax rate increases, stockholders would want the firm to
retain its earnings, so it could reinvest them. This is so because an increase in personal taxes would
apply to the taxes that stockholders have to pay on their income from dividends.
b. Increase. The more rapid that depreciation can occur, the larger the cash flows that stockholders can
receive. This increased cash flow should lead to an increase in the payout ratios for the stockholders.
c. Decrease. An increase in interest rates would create a higher balance in retained earnings. Though
this could lead to an increase in payout ratio, it is often likely that the ratio will decrease.
d. Decrease. If the rise in corporate profits is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Companies can use the residual model to set a target cash distribution level and then divide the
distribution into a dividend component and a repurchase component (Ehrhardt Brigham, 2017, p. 591).
This will lead to a decrease in the number of outstanding shares and will cause the dividend to
continue to grow. The company has more flexibility in adjusting the total distribution than it would if
the entire distribution were in the form of cash dividends, because repurchases can be varied from year
to year without giving adverse signals (Ehrhardt Brigham, 2017, p. 591). Thus, the growth of the
dividends can be less impacted by the cash inflow of the company because in years with less cash
inflow, the company can reduce the amount of stocks that it repurchases instead of having a large
fluctuation in the dividends. These are two of the several reasons why firms are motivated to
repurchase stock instead of using a cash dividend.
2. There is a tradeoff when deciding to pay dividends or retain the free cash flow. This is particularly
important when there are floatation costs to consider. If flotation costs are high, then the required
return on new equity, re, will be well above the required return on internally generated equity, rs,
making it better to set a low payout ratio and to finance through retention rather than through the

Abolition
The abolition movement is one of the most important events that blacks remember and find so
meaningful because it was the attempt to free black slaves. Abolition is the attempt to end slavery and
many of historic figures were apart of this movement. They knew that slavery was wrong and a sin
before God. Abolitionist worked diligently on the cause and William Lloyd Garrison was one who I
admire for his many works. William Lloyd Garrison was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and by
the age of 25 he joined his first abolition movement called The American Colonization Society this is
where his first works began. Garrison and the abolitionist felt that slavery was a crime against God
and man and he also had a strong Christian belief that led him to feel that God had designed him ti do
great things which ended up being to end slavery. By the age of 25 he took a job in Baltimore which
was predominantly black, as a journeyman at the National Philanthropist, where he gained much
experience that he eventually decided to start his own newspaper. January 1, 1831, Garrison published
his first newspaper called The Liberator which the first paper s topic was ending slavery. In 1832 he
helped organize the New England Anti Slavery Society, and, on December 4, 1833, the American Anti

Faith and Doubt in the Poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins Essay
Gerard Manley Hopkins had eight siblings and was born of Manley and Catherine Smith Hopkins. His
parents were Anglicans that followed the Catholic tradition in sacraments and papacy. By instilling the
theological values, faith and morals into Gerard, he became heavily influenced by his family. His
parents taught him, as well as their other children to love God. Gerard guaranteed his mother that he
would strengthen his connection with God and familiarize himself with the Scripture, so Gerard began
to read the New Testament at school. Manley, his father, was an officer of the laity and helped out at
the Church. He taught children at the Sunday school including his own son Gerard. Other relatives

As Gerard searched for an authoritative religion while he was in Oxford, he became captivated by
John Henry Newman. He saw the Newman converted from the Anglican Church to the Catholic
Church and that grabbed his attention. After understanding Newman s choice he himself also
converted to Catholicism in 1866. By 1888 Gerard had joined the Society of Jesus, which is a clergy
order founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. The Society of Jesus Order concentrates mainly on
theological scholarship and spreading the values of faith. On his journey to become a Jesuit priest
Gerard gave up on poetry. He believed that expressing himself through poetry was being too original.
Hopkins did not want his love of poetry to draw attention. To prevent his personal goal from diverging
him from becoming a Jesuit priest, he sacrificed his passion and burned his early poems. Before I
became Catholic and I only thought about what it would be like, I had the habit of crossing myself
whenever I prayed. Whenever I saw the homeless man on my way home from school I would cross
myself, saying a prayer for him. My mother would usually interrupt. Eventually, she started teasing
me for it. It was not mean or unbearable just a little tease where she would ask me why I crossed
myself, just little things. This nitpicking was not so much of a problem for me. Another time at my
mom s Seventh Day Adventist Church people stared at me because I crossed myself. They did not

Dunbar s Poem We War The Mask
Questions for We Wear the Mask:
The mask that is described in this poem is meant to represent the hiding of the emotions and the
identity of an individual. It references the idea that in order for one to survive in the world, one must
hide their true personality, feelings, and in the context of this poem, their race.
The line, [...] debt we pay to human guile, is used to imply the feelings of shame and guilt that come
with the deceit one commits when they hide themselves. When a person hides behind a mask, they
become unable to truly connect with any other human beings, on the grounds that the negativity linked
with the mask often prevents proper interaction, in which emotions are key.

The poetic device used in the line, You may cut me with your eyes, can be considered to be an

Why Are We Wash Ourselves With Toxic Chemicals

organ of our body.
Our bodies are constantly exposed to toxic chemicals, poisons, sprays, plastics, processed food, stress

We Eat With Our Skin.
The skin absorbs and eats whatever we put on it. Anything we rub on it or touches our skin can go
directly into the bloodstream.
This is why medicine in skin patches has become so popular over the years; the medications from the

Many of the earth?s water supplies would be in danger because of incursions of seawater, and the

the long run humans suffer. Basic food pyramid principles can be applied to conclude the effects of

When the polar ice caps melt more water is added to the atmosphere. One finding suggests that the
ocean water is less salty then it was under the ice twenty years earlier this would tend to confirm that
the melting and shrinking of the ice caps has already taken place (Barker 43). In general more rain
would occur causing a more humid climate. Heavy rains would cause mudslides like they did in
California last summer killing many people (Cook 58). The rains in California were torrential and the
worst the state has seen in many years (Hayden 13). If the ocean rises that much then the saltwater
incursions would eliminate much of the fresh water in the world. Moisture fuels many of the worst

Environmental Ethics And Pollution
Pollution is a growing concern for some people, but for others it is of no importance. The way humans
treat the environment is such a controversial topic that people began to examine the topic from a moral
standpoint, so much so that three approaches were developed. The Anthropocentric Approach, the
Sentientist Approach, and the Biocentric Approach are the main theories people get examine when
debating about environmental ethics. People who have an anthropocentric view believe that nature is
there to satisfy human interests, harming the environment is only bad if it also harms humans. For
example, cutting down a tree to build a house would be a positive thing because it is valuable to
humans. However, if cutting down the tree did not bring about a positive outcome the action would be
negative. William Baxter is one of the most vocal ethicist that strongly believe in the anthropocentric
approach. As stated before, William Baxter focuses on human interests. He believes that the
environment is just a means, a stepping stone to satisfy humans wants and needs. In addition, Baxter
believes living in a clean environment is not as achievable as others believe it to be because it is such
a broad goal. Baxter argues that clear goals are needed to address moral questions about the
environment because the where, when, why, and how are never fully covered when discussing the
topic. There is never a clear and concise goal when deliberating environmental issues. For example, if

1. The Sales Rep. A sales representative for a struggling computer supply firm has a chance to close a
multimillion dollar deal for an office system to be installed over a two year period. The machines for
the first delivery are in the company s warehouse, but the remainder would have to be ordered from
the manufacturer. Because the manufacturer is having difficulty meeting the heavy demand for the
popular model, the sales representative is not sure that the subsequent deliveries can be made on time.
Any delay in converting to the new system would be costly to the customer; however, the blame could

As an MD for a brewing company, her job entails for her to be able to target this youth group and get
them hooked unto their beer. The case states that there is a lot of competition. They need to find a
unique selling point, which makes them different in selling the same product. The director herself is
uncomfortable with the tricks used to attract their attention. I think she should go along with her
competition, because even though there is a drinking age of 18+ or 21+, kids hardly follow these rules
anyway. Even though she herself doesn t believe in encouraging underage drinking, she should be
aware that these tricks aren t solely responsible for the youth of today and their drinking habits. She
can advertise her alcohol, with her brand name without graphical descriptions of parties this way she
can compete with her rivals and at the same time incorporate a little bit of what she believes in.
Ethically, it would be wrong to encourage something that is against the law, but in my opinion from
the business view, when competition is there the aim is to be on top of it.

Transcript Vs Textual Analysis
Though I used to believe that test scores and a transcript were what defined me, I learned that they do
not actually give an accurate representation of who I am as a student. Transcript information and test
scores do not show how I overcame many obstacles to be able to maintain the grades I desired.
Throughout my high school years, I experienced many obstacles that tried to hinder my abilities to
perform well, but I did not allow them to have that power over me. I live in a house of six where it is
loud all the time and I literally mean all the time. There is never silence. I would have a very hard time

Federal, State, And Local Roles Of Emergency Management
Federal, State, and Local Roles in Emergency Management
Introduction
Government at all levels plays an important role during disaster management. Actions and roles of
each government agencies are spelled out in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and
the National Response Framework (NRF). But before we go into details on the roles of governments,
let me first of all explain what constitute emergency and emergency management, just to give clearer
understanding some of these terms. Then I will examine the roles of governments at all level including
first responder actions, mutual support, lead and support roles.
An emergency is a severe, sudden and sometimes risky circumstances requiring urgent action (Salman
Sawalha, 2014). Escalation of an emergency situation can lead to disaster; which is an unusual event
that can cause lost of life and property (Salman Sawalha, 2014). International Federation of Red Cross
and Red Crescent Societies (IFRRCS) define disaster as unexpected devastating events that disrupts
the operations of a population or public which leads to huge losses and overwhelmed the affected
community s ability to respond to the situation with the resources they have at hand . There are two
main types of disaster that can lead to emergency situations; these include natural and man made
disasters.
Natural disasters are the catastrophes cause by Mother Nature , which is often difficult to forecast or
manage (Morrison, et al 2014). Examples of

Theme Of Sita In The Thousand Faces Of Night
Sita, Devi s mother, in fact fitted the ideal description of womanhood. Sita, as her name signified was
symbolic of an ideal wife, mother and daughter in law. She saw her femininity as an illusion and so
she seized it firmly by its roots and pulled it out of her soul till the enticing stems of the seven noted
scale came, apart, broken and disharmonious in a cluster of pathetic twangs (105). By giving up her
veena she was giving up Saraswathi, to take on another goddess, the most ferocious of all, Kali. She
meticulously planned the lives of her husband, her daughter and herself with clinical efficiency. She
led her husband from promotion to promotion as he moved up the corporate ladder. When Devi was

All of the Other Ways of Knowing Are Controlled by...
Language is such a universal phenomenon in human society. Whenever we write or speak, we use it;
whenever we make a promise or ask a question, we use it. In the statement ¡§All of the other ways of
knowing are controlled by language¡¨, language is defined as ¡§words¡¨ and this ¡§control¡¨ can be
defined as ¡§dominate¡¨. Then this saying seems not so fair to represent the relationship between the
four ways of knowing. It is more sensible to say language gives some support or limit to our
reason¡Aperception and emotion. It may influence them, but not only one way ¡V the four ways of
knowing interact with each other.
The function of language is particularly relevant in reason. We should believe our application of
reason is within our mind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, once people notice that language gives some misunderstandings sometimes, language will
be less powerful to affect our perception.
Emotion, in the strict sense, looks like the way of knowing that is least dependent of language.
Language suffers due to its relative inability to adequately represent emotion. For all of us it is very
hard to verbalize our emotions exactly. I love my mother so much, but what is love? I respect her, feel
happy when talking to her, and I want to take care of her one day like she always does for me now.
However, it is not enough and detailed to express love. Even if in poems that are more expert in
language, it is lacking of sensible words in presenting our subtle emotions.
It can be argued that people will hold different emotions while thinking the same thing in different
languages. The reason is when we think in a certain language, we will directly think about the
literature and phrases in this language which could favor certain thinking patterns of our cultural
background, then easily lead to different emotions and perceptions. Thus, language may influence our
emotion in some manner.
Actually, language and emotion interact with each other. Consider the lecture given by Martin Luther
King (1963): ¡§I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall
be made low; the tough places will be made plain¡K¡¨ In this lecture, the orator repeated the phrase ¡§I

a building block for the friendship that developed between Forrester and Jamal. As the film
progresses, we start to see how this concept of trust starts to develop between other characters as well,
illustrating the theme of how as the friendship grows, so does the trust and respect for each other.
When we first get introduced to William Forrester, we see him as a strange man who lives in a poor

High School Musical Analysis
When watching a movie about high schoolers, there are usually many different groups of students who
all conform to one social group only. Take the movie High School Musical for example. There is
specifically one scene devoted to a song about fitting in with the status quo . There are stereotypical
groups such as jocks, nerds, theater geeks, skater kids, and the popular kids in this movie and in other
movies like it. Each of these groups can be broken down and explained more in depth. When thinking
of a jock, people would most likely picture a muscular, sweaty guy wearing some sort of jersey. A
stereotypical jock is usually also fairly popular, so there is some overlap between the groups in some
cases. Everybody knows their name and whenever people talk to them, the subject of sports usually
comes up. People ask questions like, How s the team looking this year? or When do you have
practice? Being a jock doesn t necessarily mean that your grades are bad, but with practices every
evening or two to three hours, finding time to study and work can be difficult for jocks. Teachers
usually like jocks and they might ask them questions about the game from the week before. This bond
between jocks and teachers can give the jocks an advantage. The teachers might be more lenient when
it comes to assignments if they know that the jock has a big game coming up or had a tournament the
weekend before. Nerds are on the opposite end of the spectrum. They tend to spend their free time

My Experience At Connecticut College
When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain point on the floor, it s to enjoy each step along
the way. (Wayne Dwyer) There is no description or analogy more accurate to describe my experience
both watching and performing dance this past semester at Connecticut College. As a freshman, it was
difficult to move forward with dance in a new environment since I have had the same dance
experience for 15 years. I found myself equating movements and steps to styles more known to me; I
was searching for comfort among the abundance of unfamiliarity. The challenge was to embrace
modern dancing for everything it entailed. Through watching both professional dancers and other
students, as well as improving my personal technique, I certainly feel that I have found a new
appreciation for dance. Of all the dance performances this semester, my favorite was the Department
Concert. Even though all of the artists were extraordinary to watch, I was able to connect with the
dancers most during the Department Concert. Watching Connecticut College students perform gave
me a different feeling than the other shows. I could relate to the performers better because I have had
conversations with them outside of dance and they have been there as mentors to me and the other
freshmen. This feeling of inclusion was only possible because of the atmosphere of the department;
everyone, regardless of class year, is genuinely welcomed. I also believe that seeing students perform

correction system had been through various phases of transformation, and the government had been

I believe that rehabilitation, not imprisonment, is the key to reduce the crime rate. Rehabilitation is the
initiative of healing criminal of his or her criminal inclinations. It tries to change their outlook, their
habits, and possibly even personality, to forgo their tendencies to commit crimes in the future. The
country has a responsibility to help those who fall short of the standards of behaviour government has
set, is the rehabilitative ideal. The offenders are usually folks with the greatest social disadvantages
that have forced them to a life of crime in the first place. If the policies ignore these realities, it will
foster hardships that will descend disproportionately and primarily on the already disadvantaged, and
intensify the anger that many prisoners find difficult to restrain upon their release back into such a
society, which will lead to re offend by these prisoners. The fundamental idea is to prevent a person
from committing the crime again by removing the needs to offend. This methodology is remarkably
different from the idea of deterrence , which is the idea of making criminal frightened to offend,
though he may yet wish to, and the idea of incapacitation , which isolates the criminal and eradicating
his physical power to offend, though he may still desires to.
Prison punishments are not always the answer. A prisoner s life can be simply depicted and directly

Women s Roles in The Yellow Wallpaper and The Withered Arm
Women s Roles in The Yellow Wallpaper and The Withered Arm
In the late 19th century, women were expected to conform to the conventions of society. This meant
that they were expected to get married young, pure and beautiful. They were treated like objects as if
men bought them. How the woman felt was irrelevant in this period.
Women were expected to produce an heir and a spare . Women were also victim to double standards.
For example, women had to deal with a child out of wedlock yet were given no responsibility for this.
This contrasts strongly to a woman s role in society today. However, women are still expected to get
married and give birth to a child.

Hardy uses a technique called sympathetic background to show us this when he tells of how Rhoda sat
apart from the rest in the milking barn and lived on a lonely spot away from the other milkmaids.
In The Yellow Wallpaper, Gilman also shows sympathy for the plight of women. Like Hardy, she also
uses the sympathetic background technique when she illustrates the oppression of the speaker by John
and by society. This is illustrated clearly from the very beginning of the story where the speaker says
But what is one to do? This shows how she feels she is being trapped and oppressed by society s
expectations of her.
In The Withered Arm, I feel that Farmer Lodge genuinely believed that he was doing nothing wrong
be ignoring and looking down on Rhoda and her son because he felt society expected him to do that,
however other people may believe that it was unfair that a woman was left in that position. In The
Yellow Wallpaper, I feel that John acted caringly towards the speaker, whereas others may feel that
John was over protective. In both stories, the female characters were expected to conform to societies
expectations of them and if they did not, they were ostracised from society.

Lodge (sympathetic background). For this

Physical Fitness And Mental Fitness
One of the most well known facts in the field of health and psychology is that physical fitness indeed
increases one s mental activity and increases mental fitness. This fact has been proved through
decades worth of careful and dedicated research on the mind body connection that exists in human
beings. However, while this might be an accepted fact, scholars these days are still being surprised
with new discoveries, including how exercising affects the brain and how do these benefits happen to
be. Perhaps one of the most common misconceptions about the brain is that it is a muscle (Edlund,
2013). However, basic anatomy would show that despite containing a little bit of muscle, the brain is
mostly composed of white and grey matters, which are responsible for the transmission of electrical
impulses through a series of chemical reactions. From these series of transmissions, the electrical
impulses become responsible for information transmission throughout the whole body (Godman,
2014). However, one of the more apparent differences here is that while muscle develops through
physical exertion, the brain does not. And, being a well known fact, this led to many people thinking
that in order to improve one s mental well being, the best thing to do is to read books, engage in
puzzles, and do things that would directly affect your brain. While this would certainly be beneficial,
plenty of other factors (biological and psychological) could affect an individual s perception and

The Fifteenth Amendment And Women s Suffrage Movement
Introduction The Women s Suffrage Movement was a political struggle, in which women protested
and assembled to vote and run for office. The idea that women could not vote, run for office, be
represented in the workplace, nor serve on juries contradicted early ideas that the American woman
was a protector of the concepts of freedom and righteousness. The American suffrage movement
originated from the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 (history.com). At this convention, women
alongside a few men worked to write the Declaration of Sentiments, which would start the initial idea
to fight for the rights of women and provide a list of grievances in reference to the rights of women
such as: voting rights, property rights, and educational rights (Snider 2016). However, women would
not receive suffrage until the post Civil War era. Several leaders as well as movements would have to
amalgamate over the course of several decades for the voice of women to be heard and changes to be
made in accordance to law and society. The Fifteenth Amendment and Women s Rights The concept
of women s suffrage was first questioned under the clauses of the Fifteenth Amendment. Under this
amelioration, the denial of suffrage by the states to any citizen on account of race, color, or previous
condition of servitude was prohibited. However, radical Republicans did not want to handle the plank

What Went Wrong With Area 51
It was a normal day in Rachel Nevada, despite the superstitious date. The day was friday, November
thirteenth, in the year of two thousand one hundred and fourty three. The former tiny city of Rachel
had a huge population explosion after Area 51 was excavated due to the apparent proof against
extraterrestrial life. They knew this because scientists discovered a way to create a device to scan the
entire universe that would find and living organisms. No such things were found. However, they did
not scan earth. When Area 51 was destroyed, people started seeing weird things where Area 51 used to
be, so the former employees of Area 51 started building Area 52. The new alien sights and alien study
base spread across the western Americas and a lot of people moved to Rachel. During that time, the
population of Rachel increased to over fifty six thousand residents. Seventeen year old Lucas Duncan
was in his last period, English. This was his least favorite class because of his teacher, Mrs. Grow,
who gives her students a warning every time she catches them using improper grammar. Three
warnings and the student would get a lunch detention. Lucas called her Mrs. Slow because she was old

That must be from someone else trying but failing to capture her. Derek never shot it in the leg. He put
his dead alien teacher in the box which he was still holding. He then dragged the box to Lucas and
Dragged the box and Lucas to the car, and Derek went back to the crater to collect their things. When
he got back to the car, he put everything in and drove Lucas to the hospital. Apparently, the impact
was so bad that Lucas would be in a coma for the next three months. Then, Derek took the box with
the body in it to Area 51 and collected his five hundred thousand dollar reward. He used some to pay
for Lucas s hospital bill, and the rest he put into his college savings

Analysis Of. Shapiro s The Cross And Images On A...
Lamed Shapiro s The Cross tells the story, in vivid and disturbing detail, of a Russian Jewish man who
is attacked in a pogrom, alongside his estranged mother, and is branded on the forehead with a cross
by his attacker. Blume Lempel s Images on a Blank Canvas tells another story, in equally vivid and
disturbing detail, of a woman mourning the death of her friend, a prostitute who committed suicide. In
these two stories, there is one striking similarity: The survivor is portrayed by the non survivor. In The
Cross, the Russian Jew is depicted by his mother as the brutally murdered non survivor of a pogrom.
In Images on a Blank Canvas, Blume Lempel, the survivor, is depicted by her fallen friend Zosye.
Through the depictions of survivors by non survivors, Shapiro and Lempel are able to unpack the
trauma stemming from a pogrom and a suicide and its effects on the survivors. The Cross begins with
Shapiro s description of the man who would become, simultaneously, the survivor and non survivor.
Shapiro, after noticing the man s physical features, sizes up his forehead: Then I saw his wide
forehead. It was marked with a sharply cut brown cross, a shallow wound two knife cuts, crossing
each other. This simple declaration at the beginning of the story foreshadows the fate of the man with
the cross, and allows Shapiro to lead us into the riveting body of the story, a flashback into his
unnerving past. The man s own confession ...I ve been an outsider for years now

Define evolution broadly and then give a narrower definition, as discussed in the overview. Although Lamarck s mechanism of evolution does not explain the changes in species over time, his thinking has been influential. What is considered to be the great importance of his ideas? Lamarck recognized that the match of organisms to their environments can be explained by gradual evolutionary change rather than special creation. Concept 22.2 Descent with modification by natural selection explains the adaptations of organisms and the unity and diversity of life 9. Charles Darwin proposed that the mechanism of evolution is natural selection and that it explains how adaptations arise. What are adaptations? Give two examples of adaptations. Adaptations are inherited characteristics of organisms that enhance their survival and reproduction in specific environments. Possible examples include the mottled coloration of a fawn that allows it to blend with its environment, or the sharp talons and beaks of birds of prey so well suited for predation. 10. Explain the process of natural selection. In the process of natural selection, individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than other individuals because of those traits.

Bizarre stories show up on the local news every day that leave the public questioning, What could have possibly been the cause of that? • 6. The Protestant Ethic by Max Weber The connection between economic life, rational self organisation and salvation are bought to life by Max Weber in the Protestant Ethic. This paper will showcase the way in which these terms are related to one another and it will explore this connection by drawing on what Weber refers to as the spirit of capitalism . Let us begin by understanding the starting point of Weber s concerns for economic life. It appears that Weber s interest is concerned with the development of modern life, more particularly with the spirit of capitalism and the self organisation system ( Giddens, 1992:x). Weber is interested in certain conduct and behaviour that is associated capitalism and economic lifestyles, this interest is what allows Weber to explore the connection between economic life and Protestantism (Giddens, 1992:xi). In order to fully understand the terms self organisation and salvation let us also understand what Weber understood by the term the spirit of capitalism . Weber describes this term as a peculiar ethic in which the aim is to seek an accumulation of capital, not necessarily for material purposes but also for the sake of wealth itself (Giddens, 1992:xi). It is considered as a calculated pursuit of continuous wealth accumulation and profit, it is this pursuit that is considered the essence of the spirit of capitalism. It should be noted that this accumulation not be confused with greed but rather a rational pursuit of profit (Giddens, 1992:xxxi). What we must also note ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Yamato and other anime like Mach A Go Go had female characters in the shows that were both allies and sometimes love interest to the main characters, but still were depicted as strong female role models and were drawn with normal features and body types. However, as time has passed, women in anime have been more and more sexualized and this has had an effect on how young people look at Japanese culture and women in particular. In this paper, the effects of this practice will be observed. With the anime boom of the last few years, the way women have been portrayed in these animated cartoons has been more and more sexualized. Shows such as Fairy Tale depict the female leads as scantily clad fighters with rather large breast. Even the youngest girl on the show that is around the age of 11 to 12 is depicted with larger than normal breast. One of the main reasons for this is the rather strong patriarchal view of women in Japan that is still there to this day. This will lead to a decrease in the number of outstanding shares and will cause the dividend to continue to grow. The company has more flexibility in adjusting the total distribution than it would if the entire distribution were in the form of cash dividends, because repurchases can be varied from year to year without giving adverse signals (Ehrhardt Brigham, 2017, p. 591). Thus, the growth of the dividends can be less impacted by the cash inflow of the company because in years with less cash inflow, the company can reduce the amount of stocks that it repurchases instead of having a large fluctuation in the dividends. These are two of the several reasons why firms are motivated to repurchase stock instead of using a cash dividend. 2. There is a tradeoff when deciding to pay dividends or retain the free cash flow. The way humans treat the environment is such a controversial topic that people began to examine the topic from a moral standpoint, so much so that three approaches were developed. The Anthropocentric Approach, the Sentientist Approach, and the Biocentric Approach are the main theories people get examine when debating about environmental ethics. People who have an anthropocentric view believe that nature is there to satisfy human interests, harming the environment is only bad if it also harms humans. For example, cutting down a tree to build a house would be a positive thing because it is valuable to humans. However, if cutting down the tree did not bring about a positive outcome the action would be negative. William Baxter is one of the most vocal ethicist that strongly believe in the anthropocentric approach. As stated before, William Baxter focuses on human interests. He believes that the environment is just a means, a stepping stone to satisfy humans wants and needs. In addition, Baxter believes living in a clean environment is not as achievable as others believe it to be because it is such a broad goal. Baxter argues that clear goals are needed to address moral questions about the environment because the where, when, why, and how are never fully covered when discussing the topic. There is never a clear and concise goal when deliberating environmental issues. For example, if someone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. All of the Other Ways of Knowing Are Controlled by... Language is such a universal phenomenon in human society. Whenever we write or speak, we use it; whenever we make a promise or ask a question, we use it. In the statement ¡§All of the other ways of knowing are controlled by language¡¨, language is defined as ¡§words¡¨ and this ¡§control¡¨ can be defined as ¡§dominate¡¨. However, once people notice that language gives some misunderstandings sometimes, language will be less powerful to affect our perception. Emotion, in the strict sense, looks like the way of knowing that is least dependent of language. Language suffers due to its relative inability to adequately represent emotion. For all of us it is very hard to verbalize our emotions exactly. I love my mother so much, but what is love? I respect her, feel happy when talking to her, and I want to take care of her one day like she always does for me now. However, it is not enough and detailed to express love. Even if in poems that are more expert in language, it is lacking of sensible words in presenting our subtle emotions. It can be argued that people will hold different emotions while thinking the same thing in different languages. The reason is when we think in a certain language, we will directly think about the literature and phrases in this language which could favor certain thinking patterns of our cultural background, then easily lead to different emotions and perceptions. Thus, language may influence our emotion in some manner. Actually, language and emotion interact with each other. Consider the lecture given by Martin Luther King (1963): ¡§I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low; the tough places will be made plain¡K¡¨ In this lecture, the orator repeated the phrase ¡§I have a dream¡¨ ... Take the movie High School Musical for example. There is specifically one scene devoted to a song about fitting in with the status quo . There are stereotypical groups such as jocks, nerds, theater geeks, skater kids, and the popular kids in this movie and in other movies like it. Each of these groups can be broken down and explained more in depth. When thinking of a jock, people would most likely picture a muscular, sweaty guy wearing some sort of jersey. A stereotypical jock is usually also fairly popular, so there is some overlap between the groups in some cases. Everybody knows their name and whenever people talk to them, the subject of sports usually comes up. People ask questions like, How s the team looking this year? or When do you have practice? Being a jock doesn t necessarily mean that your grades are bad, but with practices every evening or two to three hours, finding time to study and work can be difficult for jocks. Teachers usually like jocks and they might ask them questions about the game from the week before. This bond between jocks and teachers can give the jocks an advantage. The teachers might be more lenient when it comes to assignments if they know that the jock has a big game coming up or had a tournament the weekend before. (Wayne Dwyer) There is no description or analogy more accurate to describe my experience both watching and performing dance this past semester at Connecticut College. As a freshman, it was difficult to move forward with dance in a new environment since I have had the same dance experience for 15 years. I found myself equating movements and steps to styles more known to me; I was searching for comfort among the abundance of unfamiliarity. The challenge was to embrace modern dancing for everything it entailed. Through watching both professional dancers and other students, as well as improving my personal technique, I certainly feel that I have found a new appreciation for dance. Of all the dance performances this semester, my favorite was the Department Concert. Even though all of the artists were extraordinary to watch, I was able to connect with the dancers most during the Department Concert. Watching Connecticut College students perform gave me a different feeling than the other shows. I could relate to the performers better because I have had conversations with them outside of dance and they have been there as mentors to me and the other freshmen. This feeling of inclusion was only possible because of the atmosphere of the department; everyone, regardless of class year, is genuinely welcomed. Physical Fitness And Mental Fitness One of the most well known facts in the field of health and psychology is that physical fitness indeed increases one s mental activity and increases mental fitness. This fact has been proved through decades worth of careful and dedicated research on the mind body connection that exists in human beings. However, while this might be an accepted fact, scholars these days are still being surprised with new discoveries, including how exercising affects the brain and how do these benefits happen to be. Perhaps one of the most common misconceptions about the brain is that it is a muscle (Edlund, 2013). However, basic anatomy would show that despite containing a little bit of muscle, the brain is mostly composed of white and grey matters, which are responsible for the transmission of electrical impulses through a series of chemical reactions. From these series of transmissions, the electrical impulses become responsible for information transmission throughout the whole body (Godman, 2014). However, one of the more apparent differences here is that while muscle develops through physical exertion, the brain does not. And, being a well known fact, this led to many people thinking that in order to improve one s mental well being, the best thing to do is to read books, engage in puzzles, and do things that would directly affect your brain. • 44. The Fifteenth Amendment And Women s Suffrage Movement Introduction The Women s Suffrage Movement was a political struggle, in which women protested and assembled to vote and run for office. The idea that women could not vote, run for office, be represented in the workplace, nor serve on juries contradicted early ideas that the American woman was a protector of the concepts of freedom and righteousness. The American suffrage movement originated from the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 (history.com). At this convention, women alongside a few men worked to write the Declaration of Sentiments, which would start the initial idea to fight for the rights of women and provide a list of grievances in reference to the rights of women such as: voting rights, property rights, and educational rights (Snider 2016). However, women would not receive suffrage until the post Civil War era. Several leaders as well as movements would have to amalgamate over the course of several decades for the voice of women to be heard and changes to be made in accordance to law and society. The Fifteenth Amendment and Women s Rights The concept of women s suffrage was first questioned under the clauses of the Fifteenth Amendment. Under this amelioration, the denial of suffrage by the states to any citizen on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude was prohibited. Lamed Shapiro s The Cross tells the story, in vivid and disturbing detail, of a Russian Jewish man who is attacked in a pogrom, alongside his estranged mother, and is branded on the forehead with a cross by his attacker. Blume Lempel s Images on a Blank Canvas tells another story, in equally vivid and disturbing detail, of a woman mourning the death of her friend, a prostitute who committed suicide. In these two stories, there is one striking similarity: The survivor is portrayed by the non survivor. In The Cross, the Russian Jew is depicted by his mother as the brutally murdered non survivor of a pogrom. In Images on a Blank Canvas, Blume Lempel, the survivor, is depicted by her fallen friend Zosye. Through the depictions of survivors by non survivors, Shapiro and Lempel are able to unpack the trauma stemming from a pogrom and a suicide and its effects on the survivors. The Cross begins with Shapiro s description of the man who would become, simultaneously, the survivor and non survivor. Shapiro, after noticing the man s physical features, sizes up his forehead: Then I saw his wide forehead. It was marked with a sharply cut brown cross, a shallow wound two knife cuts, crossing each other.
