Dostoevsky’s Notes from Undergound
Dostoevsky s Notes from Undergound Reactions to an Overdeterministic Existence
Some of the works cited are missing
Dostoevsky presents his Notes from Undergound as the fragmented ramblings of an unnamed narrator.
On the surface, the character s narration appears disjointed and reaches no conclusive end ing until the
author intercedes to end the book. However, a close examination of the underground man s language
reveals a progression in his collected ravings. After expressing dissatisfaction with the notion of
determinism, the underground man perceives the irony of his ultra deterministic reality. Through his
narrative, the underground man discovers the truth about his predestined, fictional existence.
Dostoevsky s work is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The underground man s rebellion against determinism and its consequences has become one of the
most famous moments in modern thought, and with good reason (196). Morson observes that,
although the underground man denounces a deterministic world, he still believes that he lives in one.
The underground man s resentment of determinism produces irony in that the underground man s true
existence as a fictional character epitomizes determinism, as
Morson contends. Morson articulates the irony, stating:
Here Dostoevsky makes shrewd use of metaliterary devices. For all of his struggles to be free, the
underground man is doubly determined, not only from within the narrative world but also from
without; not only by the iron logic of spite governing his actions but also by the fact that he is the
creation of someone who has plotted all his actions in advance. His world is not just deterministic but
overdeterministic. What Dostoevsky has done here is to make the very fact that the story is a story,
that it has a structure and has already been written, a sign of failed choice and futile self assertion
(199).
The underground man struggles against the idea that his actions have been pre determined, yet the
reader knows that the outcome has already been decided and already exists as words in coming
chapters. The character makes no conscious choice in his existence because the author controls his
thoughts and actions. Morson uses a story that

Sexual Assault Against Women Essay
Sexual Assault against Women
I choose this topic because sexual assault is one of the most offensive crimes committed in our society.
Not only is it a threat to the community, but it has a physically and psychologically effect on the
victim in many ways. For the last couple of decades, sexual assault, rape, and child molestation has
become the focal point of public concerns today. According to a 1993 National Crime Victimization
Survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice, about 500,000 rapes or sexual assaults occur
each year (Statistics, March 2010). The Department of Justice states that, rape crimes have risen
nearly three times as fast as the total crime rate , although other studies have shown statistics that are

She had two children by her rapist, both of who he takes to a Reverend. When her mother dies, this
man known as Pa marries Celie to a man she will only refer to as Mr. (Walker, 1985). This is just a
fine example of the recollection of a victim.
The Violence against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 marked a turning point in our national response to
the problems of both sexual assault and domestic violence. For the first time it considered the ways in
which sexual assault and domestic violence were similar: they are both crimes of violence against
women, rooted in historical and cultural traditions and attitudes. VAWA also addressed the ways our
laws failed to prosecute and punish perpetrators of these crimes of violence, while often increasing the
trauma experienced by victims. The act included measures designed to protect crime victims rights
and provide crime victims with compensation, establish hotlines for sexual assault and family violence
victims, establish sex offender registration and community notification, protect women from date rape,
and coordinate law enforcement and social services to deal with crime in a unified manner.
VAWA is a wide ranging law which, among other things, mandated research into sexual and domestic
violence, funded community efforts against sexual and domestic violence through grants, proposed
changes in the evaluation and determination of evidence, affirmed victims rights of

Marina Vs Ostia
I have never given the use of land much thought. I imagine, before civilization there was really
nothing besides wilderness. Now things have changed drastically. The establishment of colonies has
fostered the creation of distinct buildings purposed to serve different functions. From commercial
purposes to something as simple and as essential as shelter, these buildings have been created to
accommodate a targeted group of individuals, for not everybody has access to all of these services.
There has been an ongoing discourse of whether the use of land is determined chronologically,
culturally, or perhaps by some other factor. Of course, this varies from city to city. When comparing
Region V of Ostia to the city of Marina in California it is quite captivating how although very
different a modern place like Marina is very similar to an ancient one like Ostia when it comes to the
distribution of space. Such similarities may have to do with a shared culture, that of warfare. ... Show

and a map of Marina, California side by side what differentiates them the most is how a great deal of
space in Marina is allocated to entertainment facilities whereas shops and workshops seems to have
occupied most of the space in Ostia, Region V. This means that modern cities seem to revolve around
the world of entertainment while ancient places seemed to have been more focused on the selling of
goods rather than that of services. Such phenomena can be due to the demands of the people
habituating the places or to the desires of those who created the buildings. In brevity, the shifting of
peoples desires from wanting to buy things to wanting to be entertained might be the main source of
the differences between these two

Home Is Tony Morrison s Fictional Account Of A Korean War
Home is Tony Morrison s fictional account of a Korean War veteran s experiences after returning to
America. The veteran, Frank Money, faces particular challenges because he is a black man in 1950s
America. Frank is attempting to return to his home state of Georgia in order to save his little sister,
Cee, from danger. Along the way he faces the pitfalls of being a black man and a veteran. By writing
from multiple perspectives, Morrison is able to compare Frank s experience to that of other black
people in America, especially Cee s. By the end of the novel, Frank and Cee have experienced an arc
of redemption and self realization. Home displays the dual trauma experienced from American war
and racism. The comparison of Cee s story with Frank s solidifies the trauma of both their situations.
Frank deals with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) caused by watching his friends die and
killing a young Korean girl. With PTSD come alcoholism, unemployment, and homelessness. This is
typical of the awful experiences we know veterans go through. Simultaneously, Frank faces racism
upon his return home and throughout his travels. He needs to know specific black friendly homes and
businesses in order to have ways to eat, stay, and move across the country, otherwise facing
persecution from white people he encounters. Often, Frank can t even avoid racist violence, such as
when he was pulled into a fight with a man in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Cee experiences just as many

How to Buy a House
How to Buy a House
Owning a home has always been a fundamental tenet of the American Dream. It symbolizes
opportunity, security, and freedom. Today, the American Dream has come true for many, but there still
is a significant portion of the American population who could use some guidance in pursuing their
dream of home ownership. Many people dream of owning their own home, but it mandates
homework, legwork, and considerable effort on their part to ensure that the process goes as smoothly
as possible. This task can, at times, seem complicated and overwhelming. But if things are taken step
by step, you will soon be holding the keys to your own home! Being a mortgage consultant for over
seven years, I have been helping families to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once I have processed your file, I will give you a copy of your pre approval letter. This is a very
important letter because this certifies that you are approved with a bank (with conditions) for a certain
mortgage amount and a certain purchase price for the house. If this will be your first home, I will also
provide you with a free first time home buyer s seminar (which I strongly recommend that you
attend). Only proceed (after this step) if buying a home makes more financial sense for you and your
family than renting. Now it s time for you and your family to discuss where you would most like to
live, based upon the amount for which you were approved by the bank (a real estate agent can be a
great asset in this process). My suggestion would be to sign up for MLS (Multiple Listing Service)
alert services to search for properties in your area so that you can get a feeling for what is on the
market and within your price range. The next step would be to find a good real estate agent to
represent you in the search and negotiation process. The real estate agent should be amiable, open,
interested, relaxed, confident, and of course, qualified. Learn the agent s rates, methods, experience,
and training. You can also ask your loan consultant for a referral, as they have most likely worked with
several realtors and would be able to give you a

George Orwell s Emphasis Of The Two Minutes Hate
The Reason Behind George Orwell s Emphasis of the Two Minutes Hate Many technological
advancements have been made throughout the years, and almost all people have access to some form
of technology. In 1984 this is also true with technological advancements being made to their television
and broadcasting systems. The technological advancements made to these items is the reason for
George Orwell including the Two Minutes Hate in his book. He puts a lot of emphasis on this idea in
the beginning of the book, but this emphasis is not only to show his predictions for technology. The
reason for emphasis of the Two Minutes Hate in 1984 is the timeframe when George Orwell wrote it,
and his commentary on the downsides of technology. The time frame that this book was written fits
the reason as to why he is so vast in describing technology, as the television was just making its
appearance when this book was written (1984). The idea that a television could do all of the things
that it does in this book would have been mind blowing to the population. The fact that technology
like this was new allowed Orwell to make any prediction that he wanted to without being shot down,
because there was no one who would have been able to prove him wrong. The Two Minutes Hate
allowed him to express how he felt about technologies future, while still being able to successfully
show a totalitarian leader. The timeframe this book was written in is a main component as to why
Orwell emphasizes the

Essay about Orson Welles The Magnificent Ambersons
The biggest mistake we have made is to consider that films are primarily a form of entertainment. The
film is the greatest medium since the invention of movable type for exchanging ideas and information,
and it is no more at its best in light entertainment than literature is at its best in the light novel. Orson
Welles
Orson Welles was passionate about film. By the young age of 25, he had directed, produced, and
starred in what is today considered by most to be the greatest movie ever made, Citizen Kane. About a
year later, Welles began work on his next film project, The Magnificent Ambersons. Based on the
novel of the same name by Booth Tarkington, The Magnificent Ambersons tells the story of a falling

Welles wrote the script of The Ambersons in nine days (McBride 53).
The film was to be financed by the production company RKO/ Mercury. A major problem arouse with
the budget before shooting began. Because of the shrinking international film market, RKO had set a
maximum budget in Welles contract of $600,000 for The Magnificent Ambersons (Higham213). Also,
according to the arrangement that RKO had made with its bank, no film from the studio was ever to
exceed $750,000. A pre budget estimate of Ambersons came close to one million dollars. Pared down
to more details in its final form just before shooting, the film looked as if it would still cost in excess
of $850,000. Permission to proceed with production was eventually granted, but with strict rules to
Welles to bring the cost down to under the $750,000 figure (Higham 214).
The Magnificent Ambersons is a Historical Epic Drama based on a time almost 70 years prior to its
making. In order to cast the film, Welles read a delineation of the characters Tarkington had given in a
1917 issue of Metropolitan Magazine (Brady 316).
The silent star Dolores Costello was brought out of retirement to play Isabel Amberson. Welles also
made the surprising choice of selecting contract player Tim Holt for the role of George Minafer. Holt

Career And Understanding Social Behaviors Essay
Working with people in the corporate world and understanding social behaviors is without a doubt a
setting where I want to continue gaining experience and expanding my knowledge. Idealistically I
would love to see myself in a position where it would be intrinsically as well as extrinsically
rewarding; I am at the age where I finally understand that money does not equate happiness. As a
novice in the field I do not yet have sufficient understanding of all the positions available with the
degree in I/O. A plethora of occupations could benefit from the understanding of the fundamental
principles provided by an I/O psychologist. While working at Ross, I catch myself observing the
hierarchical pyramid of the HR department, trying to envision where I would love to see myself in 10
years. Specifically, I am intrigued and keen on learning more from the HR consulting sector of the
firm, specializing in a variety of fields (i.e. employee incentives, reward programs, benefits).
However, I have also realized by observing the Vice President of the HR consulting firm that the stress
level within the high level jobs in this particular employment area are ultimately very high. Supporting
my realization, Pritchar, Hart, and Fuenton (1989) employment in the arena of HR consulting firms,
although they acquire a high starting salary, these specific roles also resonate high levels of pressure;

The Virtual And The Real Economic Worlds
1.1 Introduction
The virtual and the real economic worlds are intermingling more than ever before, raising the
possibility that cryptocurrency might eventually replace the government run system of euros, dollars
and yen. Before extensively explaining why Bitcoin, a virtual currency, will have a financial impact,
we must first understand what it is exactly. Bitcoin is an online digital currency, created in 2009 by a
Japanese man with the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto .¹ While many believe this currency is backed
by a physical institution or pegged by a commodity, it is simply a mathematical algorithm free of
regulation that acts as an alternative to the banking system. With digital currency such as Bitcoin,
there is no central bank or government to trust, you ve just got to trust the math. People are losing
faith in traditional credit unions and are looking for new stores of value. CryptoCurrency allows
anybody to have a bank in their pocket. Simply put, the way the internet changed how the world
communicates, bitcoin changes the way money works.
1.2 Forms of Money
Digital currency is going to happen, in fact, it s already happening. Whether it happens now or in 10
years, we will be using digital currencies that don t depend on traditional fiat government. Currently,
in 2014, money is still being issued on paper and in metal coins, but not solely. Most forms of cash
actually exists as database entries backed by the state s promises. I don t know about you, dear reader,

Most of the satires presented in the novel are dark and bitter in their own way. The first and the
foremost satire is on civilization. In this era of moving forward with civilization and civilized people,
the people still think of going to war. He highlights the destruction, evil and fear in human mind.
During the start of the novel we see the boys end up in an uninhabited island. The reason of the plane

American Freedom Of Speech And Expression
The American people are each unique human beings, not one is like the other. Americans can be
defined as people of self expression and diligence in the workforce because they have multiple
freedoms, rights to be themselves, as well as gratitude towards the United States of America. Many
Characteristics can be used to describe an American but self expression and hard work are the most
important ones. These characteristics are what helped the American society grow into the strong
community it is today. To begin with, American s are admired for their freedom. In America, people
believe a person is born with rights and freedoms. People in America are free to be themselves as well
as express themselves. To define an American as free includes their rights as a human. Franklin D
Roosevelt gave a speech in 1941 about people s freedoms. He states that everyone is entitled to all the
freedoms as a human being. Roosevelt stated The first is freedom of speech and expression (44). This
freedom is in correlation to an American right in Amendment I, freedom of speech. All of the
freedoms Americans have contributed to who they really are. Freedoms of religion, speech, press and
many more make each person unique. Nobody is telling an American they cannot be, say or do
anything. They are free people under the law to live in a way that makes them happy. American s use
their self expression through their rights in order to be free when it comes to speech and many other
rights.

Also, I helped kids learn their alphabet and numbers and assist them with puzzles and games. I created
an open and inviting environment by being kind and positive around families. In addition, I helped out
with events like fundraising events and holiday parties where we help kids with crafts and hand out
foods for everyone to eat. I assist the staff members with anything they need and I manage the front

Comparing Creation Myths of Ancient Egypt and The...
Comparing Creation Myths of Ancient Egypt and The Christian Bible
Creation in Ancient Egyptian religion can be much different than the creation account taken from The
Bible. Genesis has a set description of The Beginning while there are several different versions and
variations in Egyptian mythology. The versions range from a one god myth (Ptah; see picture) to the
more common creator out of Nun, which in itself has several derivations.
The Ogdoad is a grouping of eight gods that existed before the creator and formed him. This version is
taken from Middle Egypt at Hermopolis. The eight gods consisted of Amun, Huh, Kuk, and Nun and
their counterparts (i.e. Nun and Naunet). They came together to create an egg that contains the ...

Creation began by a bodily function of the creator god. Either through ejaculation, sneezing, or
spitting the creator began to produce others (Redford). The creator god had other gods come into
being and they in turn began to create until the ancient Egyptians had a sufficient explanation for there
being here.
The most popular creation myth, in present day is the one god myth. It existed yet, had a brief life and
it was in the minority. Here Ptah was the closest thing to monotheism that the ancients had. This is a
popular theme in Memphite theology, but it was present in parts of Egypt. Ptah supposedly had all that
is manifest in thought and then created them with his Word (Baines, 1991). It is also said that the one
god is and the other god names are used to personify an extension of the one god (Ancient Egyptian
Religion pg. 2 and 3). Ptah creates the Ennead with thought and word. This monotheism was not very
widespread and it did not last long.
In Genesis, the first book of The Bible the Christian and Jewish creation story is told. God spoke and
his Word was done. He made the heavens and the earth. He made light and drove away the dark. On
the earth he created the waters and lands and man and beast.
The last two accounts are similar in many ways. Ptah can be identified with God even though what
they did to create was not exactly similar. Ptah created the Ennead while God

Life Of Frederick Douglas And Benito Cerano Essay
Education Frees the Mind and Body
Until justice is blind to color, until education is unaware of race, until opportunity is unconcerned with
the color of men s skins, emancipation will be a proclamation but not a fact (Lyndon B. Johnson).
Frederick Douglas and Herman Melville lived in the same time for almost the same length of time.
Herman Melville lived from August, 1819 September 28, 1891, while Frederick Douglass lived from
February, 1818 February 20, 1895. Yet these two narratives couldn t have been more different. While
taking a look at the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas and Benito Cerano we can see these
two insights of their world. I will be delving into how these two narratives show the condoning of
racialized slavery, the endorsing of rebellion, and their individual perspectives. There is one thing that
combines these two and that is their education. Education is what shifts the mind from the mind of a
brute regardless of color to the level of where color and racism don t exist. If there is one thing that
racism needs it needs support and to be condoned because without it this, it no longer exists and both
Frederick Douglass and Herman Melville show how racialized slavery at this time was condoned and
accepted and why. Herman Melville shows how the use of stereotypes condoned racism and this quote
supports this.

Essay On Big Cat Public Safety Act
A woman flees from authorities with her collection of tigers, monkeys, a fox, and a skunk and her 14
year old daughter who was living under the same roof as the wild animals.
A California couple, whose escaped pet tiger prowled neighborhoods for weeks before finally being
shot and killed by authorities, quickly packed their things up and fled with the rest of their big cat
collection in tow.
What does these two as well as dozens of other cases all have in common? The people all wind up in
one state, Nevada.
While 45 out of the 50 states that make up America have laws forbidding people from owning exotic
wildlife there are five that have no such rules.
Like Nevada the four other states Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Wisconsin have no
standards nor statewide laws restricting private possession of dangerous wild animals.

The government needs to pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act. It passage will prohibit unqualified
morons from possessing and breeding big cats, bolster weak laws in states that have them, and fill any

Until the state takes action, there can only be two outcomes. The Big cat act gets passed or there will

kills a few kids and then the politicians will pass the act as well as passing the blame for not passing it

Role Strain Vs Role Conflict
When looking at society introspectively, it is evident that it functions on hierarchies. Social status can
be defined as the level of prestige or relevance one possesses in society, while a status set is an
assortment of responsibilities which stem directly from one s standing in society. Although each one
occupies a certain position in society, one factor or position is paramount to the other, which is
referred to as the master status(Steckley,2014). Meanwhile, social roles are obligations associated with
a particular status, while a role set is a compilation of roles relevant to a particular status. In regards to
roles, certain issues may arise which are known as role strain, and role conflict. A Role strain arises
when two or more roles create direct conflict pertaining to a particular status (Steckley, 2014).
Although similar to a role strain, role conflict differs as it is the rigidity of requirements expected
between multiple statuses (Steckley, 2014). After establishing the definition of a status, it can be
further condensed into two categories; ascribed and achieved. An ascribed status is what an individual
inherits from birth or uncontrolled, whereas an achieved status is a ... Show more content on

The Turtle Twins In a land far, far away, there were two turtles who were born. They were conjoined
twins and shared the same body. The more dominant of the two, the one with the red spots arranged in

born on July 8th in 2015. Although, they were not believed to live long because Tabitha was not

to make these two turtles live as long as possible.

My Family Cultural Analysis
My family mainly originates from the U.K, predominantly Ireland. Both sets of my Grandparents are
mainly Irish but they more than likely have English and Scottish ancestry as their parents were from
the U.K which consist of Ireland, Scotland, and England. I myself like to think of myself as Irish
because, well, let s be honest, the Irish are pretty cool. This fondness of Ireland helped me determine
what images to use to represent my heritage and culture, these images consist of the Irish flag,
Shepard s Pie, an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, and a rainy forest. I choose these images because I
thought they portrayed how I perceive my culture and heritage, beginning with the guitars. My Mother
s side of the family holds a lot of musicians who played stringed instruments such as the fiddle, banjo,
or guitar. I myself play guitar and love stringed instruments, especially ones in a traditional orchestra
like double bass, cello, and violins, I also really like folk music which primarily originates from
Ireland. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Forest Of Gombe By Jane Goodall
Before science is introduced to the human society, people always use religious beliefs to describe the
mysterious phenomenon. However, as science becomes advanced, people gradually lost in the
relationship between it and religious beliefs. In the essay In the Forest of Gombe , Jane Goodall
spends long time with chimpanzees in the forests to recover from her husband s death. During this
period, she learns new ideas from the chimps and finds herself back, and understands the complicated
relationship between scientific ideas and religious beliefs. Thus, to uncover peace, people have to
understand themselves first instead of focusing on problems permanently. People have the space to
understand themselves when stay with animals, and learn many meaningful ideas from them. When
people lost their families, they cannot accept it because they rarely face this kind of situations. Before
her husband passes away, Goodall believes in god. However, after losing her husband, Goodall angry
at the unjustness and starts to reject the god. To seek for healing, she decides to go to the forest and
stay with chimpanzees in Gombe. However, in the forest, animals deal with death in a totally different
way. Dead body can be finding everywhere and death is happening at all times. Thus, animals treat it
normally. As Goodall says, And always there are the young ones to carry on the life of the species

Essay About My New Years
That New Years was the most rough, fun, exciting and painful New Years I have experienced in my 14
years of life. The people who were present were Lorrissa, her older sister Leena, Megan E. , Jadynn
and of course me. We were spending that New Year s at Lorrissas hoping for a fun night. That night
was mostly fun but at times it was... dramatic to say the least. I arrived after Jadynn but before Megan,
we decided we would wait until Megan got here to start doing the interesting things. When Megan did

after maybe 2 minutes of silence.
When we woke up Megan left around eight in the morning and Jadynn came back and we went out for

there was a mailbox coming up. I did not hear Lorrissa holler back at Leena and I to duck down, but

Utopian Urbanism That Forms Utopic Degeneration
From recent years, utopian urbanism connects with the so called crisis of modernist urbanism that
forms utopic degeneration. Utopia has developed to mean a community with a visionary system of
political and societal perfection, where cities that function to improve the daily lives of its citizens; an
ideal society, However these concepts are more often than not depicted as an impossible dream, yet
too bold, too radical to ever exist in real life. Some utopian visions are focused on new technology,
whereas others are on intact landscapes. In other occasions, some are based on new social orders, but
all were combined under a radical avant garde and progressive architecture. It is this, their new and
bold concepts that drive the imagination of architects and town planners. Although rarely realized in
full, principles from some utopian visions have been adopted in part and have had significant
influence on existing cities such as New York, Chandigarh and Paris. They are a catalyst for
generating ideas and new forms of thinking that leads to, for better or for worse the many innovations
in 21st century urban planning. Since utopian thinking can produce a vision of the future that is
achievable, what is the connection between having a vision of the future, whether achievable or not,
and utopian thinking?
The concept of utopia, derived from Thomas Mores, in his famous text in 1516 where he refers a place
as to both somewhere good and to nowhere. The connections between utopian

Software Testing
Software Testing
Carnegie Mellon University

Spring 1999
Authors: Jiantao Pan mailto:%20jpan@cmu.edu Abstract:
Software testing is any activity aimed at evaluating an attribute or capability of a program or system
and determining that it meets its required results. [Hetzel88] Although crucial to software quality and
widely deployed by programmers and testers, software testing still remains an art, due to limited
understanding of the principles of software. The difficulty in software testing stems from the
complexity of software: we can not completely test a program with moderate complexity. Testing is
more than just debugging. The purpose of testing can be quality assurance, verification and ... Show

But this alone will not guarantee to make the software better, because the Complexity Barrier
[Beizer90] principle states: Software complexity(and therefore that of bugs) grows to the limits of our
ability to manage that complexity. By eliminating the (previous) easy bugs you allowed another
escalation of features and complexity, but his time you have subtler bugs to face, just to retain the
reliability you had before. Society seems to be unwilling to limit complexity because we all want that
extra bell, whistle, and feature interaction. Thus, our users always push us to the complexity barrier
and how close we can approach that barrier is largely determined by the strength of the techniques we
can wield against ever more complex and subtle bugs. [Beizer90]
Regardless of the limitations, testing is an integral part in software development. It is broadly
deployed in every phase in the software development cycle. Typically, more than 50% percent of the
development time is spent in testing. Testing is usually performed for the following purposes: * To
improve quality.
As computers and software are used in critical applications, the outcome of a bug can be severe. Bugs
can cause huge losses. Bugs in critical systems have caused airplane crashes, allowed space shuttle
missions to go awry, halted trading on the stock market, and worse. Bugs can kill. Bugs can

The sheer volume of students the university has exceeds the number it can provide housing for, thus
making housing a priority over parking. With a limited budget the issue could take longer to resolve
fully, another issue could be the space required for a lot or garage. Troy University also has a bus
system that helps off campus students with transportation but the times they arrive can vary greatly.
The university is exceeding what it can be expected to support and with that all aspects of student life
can be at risk. Even campus involvement suffering because so many are forced off campus for
housing. If the school were to resolve both issues it could see a happier populace.
The university has options to fix the issue, but will likely neglect the issue as it does not directly
contribute to the university financially instead they will prioritize new dorms and a new recreation
facility. One option that the university could implement is a freshman driving ban, this would likely
add strain on the bus system and demand a rework of it, but the buses are not used by a majority of
students and a rework of it could see demand rise which would be beneficial and maybe even justify
an expansion of it. The university could see backlash in response to such a policy, but campus
involvement would likely improve. This solution would also see the space that the university needs to
expand be available for other projects and not used by massive lots or garages,

Impact Of Student Motivation And Student Engagement
Impact on Student Motivation and Student Engagement According to Legault and Green Demers
(2006), one of the most salient academic problems beleaguering today s students is a lack of
motivation toward learning. While education is compulsory, and educators work diligently to create
and implement academically appropriate lessons, students, year after year, lack the desire and
motivation to participate in academic tasks required to prepare them for the 21st century world. The
lack of student motivation can lead to frustration and discontentment and can impede academic
productivity (Legault et al., 2006).

Student Motivation Engaging students so they perform at high levels and have top notch academic self
conceptualization requires students to act of freewill deriving pleasure from their academic efforts
(Ford et al., 2013). Educational pedagogies should not include entertaining students, but rather as a
means of engaging them. Because of the advent of technology and its continued transformation,
students require new study habits and strategies (Wen Li, Yi Chun, Jau Bi, Chia Wen, 2017) that peak
their interests and galvanize them to seek knowledge through intrinsic motivation. While intrinsically
motivated students exhibit the apex of self determination, conversely, students motivated by extrinsic
rewards can also perform well. High school students are often

Iconoclasm In The Byzantine Empire
When researching iconoclasm during the Byzantine Empire and today s Middle East, one can easily

important to analyze the reasons and intent behind the destruction. By doing this, a person can better
understand the motivation for the artwork s destruction and even determine if history should treat the

With respect to the Byzantine era, the reason behind the destruction of icons was a theological debate
within the Christian religion. During this time, the creation of icons was believed to be divinely
inspired by God. Iconophiles, those that like and approve of icons, were devout Christian s who
prayed at an icon because of what it represented God. However Iconoclasts, those who work to

Ellipsis Of Subjects And Objects In Mandarin Chinese
Ellipsis of Subjects and Objects in Mandarin Chinese
Mandarin Chinese as one of the unique languages in the world has many significant features, and one
of them is ellipsis of subjects and objects. In English, a complete sentence consists of at least three
basic elements which are a subject, an object, and a verb. However, compare with English, Mandarin
Chinese does not have strict grammatical rules to form a complete sentence because people can leave
out subjects or objects when they talk to each other. Although there are many sentences in Mandarin
Chinese lack of subjects or objects, the sentences are still clear and grammatically correct. Therefore,
can we conclude that subjects and objects are not necessary for spoken Mandarin Chinese? In other
words, when can a speaker omit the subject or the object in Mandarin Chinese?
Ellipsis of subjects also occurs in spoken English, but it normally in a set phrase. For example, people
often say see you tomorrow rather than I will see you tomorrow. Moreover, due to grammatical
requirement, not every sentence in English can omit the subject. Although sometimes the sentence is
still understandable without the subject, the meaning will become ambiguous. Compare with English,
ellipsis of subjects is more common in spoken Mandarin Chinese. Unlike English, it does not have any
grammatical restriction and can be used in any sentence. Therefore, In order to have a better
understanding of ellipsis of subjects and objects in Mandarin Chinese, I use examples from video
recording that I recorded in an apartment. There are two participants in the video and both of them are
native Chinese speaker. Two participants know each other very well, and the conversation topic is
about the Animation class that female speaker takes this quarter.
In the conversation, the female speaker omits subjects constantly, and the listener can still understand
what she wants to say and respond to her. For example, the female speaker says:
(1). 在 上面 一个劲 地 讲. zai shangmian yigrjing de jiang.
At top continuously C talk
(He) talks continuously at the stage.

basis that I objected to their lifestyle, logic then dictates that I approve of the lifestyle of all the other
clients with whom I work. Additionally, I realize that I have a particular aversion to working with gay
or lesbian couples (as opposed to couples who are living together), and this is also an area that I am
currently addressing. In conclusion, I recognize that my job as a counselor involves respecting the role

Felson 290; Farrell and Swigert 352; Sundby 347). Similarly, sexual assault is an aggravating factor
both statutorily and de facto as a contemporaneous felony for a felony murder charge in most
jurisdictions (Snell). Stauffer et al find that juries are more likely to impose death sentences in
homicides involving rape. Although rare Pierce and Radelet forty two report that less than two percent
of first degree murder convictions in their 10 year Illinois sample included a contemporaneous sexual
assault, perceptions about the particular heinousness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They show that the apparent independent effects of victim race and gender on death sentences in Ohio
actually are a product of the strong association between one victim race gender group of cases and the
imposition of a death sentence. The comparison of specific race gender victim combinations reveals
that white female victim cases are the only victim race gender combination in which the odds of
receiving a death sentence are significantly different from any other reference group (i.e., white male,
black female, or black male victims). They argue that the observed white female effect is consistent
with the historically increased concern and ruthless response to the victimization of white females in
American culture (Holcomb, Williams, and Demuth 886). The perceived victimization of white
females, especially by nonwhite offenders, has considerable symbolic power in the United States and
has been used to support a variety of social and political goals (Langum; Morgan 55). Perhaps related
to this cultural history, white females may be perceived as the group most in need of protection from
violence and least likely to be responsible for their victimization. Conversely, homicides with other
victim groups may affect the focal concerns of decision makers in a manner that encourages a more
lenient response compared with the victimization of white females. Unlike black females and males in
general, for whom violence may be perceived as a more familiar experience (Hawkins 723); Spohn,
violence against white females may represent a more serious threat because of the harm to perceived
innocent victims a major factor in capital jury decision making (Sundby

The Rise Of Asian Civilizations
Do you feel that Asian Civilizations from 1500 to 1700 veered towards modernity or careened back
toward traditional culture? From the 16th to 18th century, the prominent Asian Civilizations were the
Mughal Empire, the Ming Dynasty of China and the Edo Period of Japan. There was an obvious trend
that these empires leaned toward traditional culture mainly because of political influences. Although
there were also several aspects of each society such as the more important role of women in the
Mughal Empire, the interactions of the Jesuits with China and Japan that might be indicative of
modernity or act as a precursor to modern values, the reversion of traditional culture in each
civilization is so much greater that it outweighed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, farming lands were reclaimed, campaigns of reforestation were initiated, roads and
canals were paved and dug, and irrigation and flood prevention measures were constructed. Instead of
focusing on trading and commercialism like their previous Mongolian rulers, the Ming reverted back
to the traditional Chinese agrarian society. At around the 16th Century, the Edo Period began in Japan,
marked by the ruling of the Tokugawa Ieyasu over Daimyos, or feudal lords. Because of his military
strength, the Shogun was able to help restore the Imperial rule to its former glory by granting lands to
the royal family and creating a system that emulates tradition, installing the Emperor as the head of
Japan, when in reality it is but a figurehead. However, at least it is ceremonially important and is
considered upholding of traditional values. The Shogun also banned Japanese from traveling abroad as
well as completely isolating Japan from the rest of the world after several disputes with Europeans and
their Jesuits. This is why Japan remained largely uninfluenced by modern Western Ideals until the 18th
century. Another noteworthy example of traditionalism in these civilizations is the presence of a strong
caste system within their society. In the Mughal Empire, the caste system of the Indians which make
up the most of the population was still in effect at that time.

  • 2. Dostoevsky’s Notes from Undergound Dostoevsky s Notes from Undergound Reactions to an Overdeterministic Existence Some of the works cited are missing Dostoevsky presents his Notes from Undergound as the fragmented ramblings of an unnamed narrator. On the surface, the character s narration appears disjointed and reaches no conclusive end ing until the author intercedes to end the book. However, a close examination of the underground man s language reveals a progression in his collected ravings. After expressing dissatisfaction with the notion of determinism, the underground man perceives the irony of his ultra deterministic reality. Through his narrative, the underground man discovers the truth about his predestined, fictional existence. Dostoevsky s work is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The underground man s rebellion against determinism and its consequences has become one of the most famous moments in modern thought, and with good reason (196). Morson observes that, although the underground man denounces a deterministic world, he still believes that he lives in one. The underground man s resentment of determinism produces irony in that the underground man s true existence as a fictional character epitomizes determinism, as Morson contends. Morson articulates the irony, stating: Here Dostoevsky makes shrewd use of metaliterary devices. For all of his struggles to be free, the underground man is doubly determined, not only from within the narrative world but also from without; not only by the iron logic of spite governing his actions but also by the fact that he is the creation of someone who has plotted all his actions in advance. His world is not just deterministic but overdeterministic. What Dostoevsky has done here is to make the very fact that the story is a story, that it has a structure and has already been written, a sign of failed choice and futile self assertion (199). The underground man struggles against the idea that his actions have been pre determined, yet the reader knows that the outcome has already been decided and already exists as words in coming chapters. The character makes no conscious choice in his existence because the author controls his thoughts and actions. Morson uses a story that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Sexual Assault Against Women Essay Sexual Assault against Women I choose this topic because sexual assault is one of the most offensive crimes committed in our society. Not only is it a threat to the community, but it has a physically and psychologically effect on the victim in many ways. For the last couple of decades, sexual assault, rape, and child molestation has become the focal point of public concerns today. According to a 1993 National Crime Victimization Survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice, about 500,000 rapes or sexual assaults occur each year (Statistics, March 2010). The Department of Justice states that, rape crimes have risen nearly three times as fast as the total crime rate , although other studies have shown statistics that are in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She had two children by her rapist, both of who he takes to a Reverend. When her mother dies, this man known as Pa marries Celie to a man she will only refer to as Mr. (Walker, 1985). This is just a fine example of the recollection of a victim. The Violence against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 marked a turning point in our national response to the problems of both sexual assault and domestic violence. For the first time it considered the ways in which sexual assault and domestic violence were similar: they are both crimes of violence against women, rooted in historical and cultural traditions and attitudes. VAWA also addressed the ways our laws failed to prosecute and punish perpetrators of these crimes of violence, while often increasing the trauma experienced by victims. The act included measures designed to protect crime victims rights and provide crime victims with compensation, establish hotlines for sexual assault and family violence victims, establish sex offender registration and community notification, protect women from date rape, and coordinate law enforcement and social services to deal with crime in a unified manner. VAWA is a wide ranging law which, among other things, mandated research into sexual and domestic violence, funded community efforts against sexual and domestic violence through grants, proposed changes in the evaluation and determination of evidence, affirmed victims rights of ... • 4. Marina Vs Ostia I have never given the use of land much thought. I imagine, before civilization there was really nothing besides wilderness. Now things have changed drastically. The establishment of colonies has fostered the creation of distinct buildings purposed to serve different functions. From commercial purposes to something as simple and as essential as shelter, these buildings have been created to accommodate a targeted group of individuals, for not everybody has access to all of these services. There has been an ongoing discourse of whether the use of land is determined chronologically, culturally, or perhaps by some other factor. Of course, this varies from city to city. When comparing Region V of Ostia to the city of Marina in California it is quite captivating how although very different a modern place like Marina is very similar to an ancient one like Ostia when it comes to the distribution of space. • 5. Home Is Tony Morrison s Fictional Account Of A Korean War Home is Tony Morrison s fictional account of a Korean War veteran s experiences after returning to America. The veteran, Frank Money, faces particular challenges because he is a black man in 1950s America. Frank is attempting to return to his home state of Georgia in order to save his little sister, Cee, from danger. Along the way he faces the pitfalls of being a black man and a veteran. By writing from multiple perspectives, Morrison is able to compare Frank s experience to that of other black people in America, especially Cee s. By the end of the novel, Frank and Cee have experienced an arc of redemption and self realization. Home displays the dual trauma experienced from American war and racism. The comparison of Cee s story with Frank s solidifies the trauma of both their situations. Frank deals with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) caused by watching his friends die and killing a young Korean girl. With PTSD come alcoholism, unemployment, and homelessness. This is typical of the awful experiences we know veterans go through. Simultaneously, Frank faces racism upon his return home and throughout his travels. He needs to know specific black friendly homes and businesses in order to have ways to eat, stay, and move across the country, otherwise facing persecution from white people he encounters. Often, Frank can t even avoid racist violence, such as when he was pulled into a fight with a man in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Cee experiences just as many traumatic events as ... Today, the American Dream has come true for many, but there still is a significant portion of the American population who could use some guidance in pursuing their dream of home ownership. Many people dream of owning their own home, but it mandates homework, legwork, and considerable effort on their part to ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible. This task can, at times, seem complicated and overwhelming. But if things are taken step by step, you will soon be holding the keys to your own home! Once I have processed your file, I will give you a copy of your pre approval letter. This is a very important letter because this certifies that you are approved with a bank (with conditions) for a certain mortgage amount and a certain purchase price for the house. If this will be your first home, I will also provide you with a free first time home buyer s seminar (which I strongly recommend that you attend). Only proceed (after this step) if buying a home makes more financial sense for you and your family than renting. Now it s time for you and your family to discuss where you would most like to live, based upon the amount for which you were approved by the bank (a real estate agent can be a great asset in this process). My suggestion would be to sign up for MLS (Multiple Listing Service) alert services to search for properties in your area so that you can get a feeling for what is on the market and within your price range. The next step would be to find a good real estate agent to represent you in the search and negotiation process. The real estate agent should be amiable, open, interested, relaxed, confident, and of course, qualified. Learn the agent s rates, methods, experience, and training. You can also ask your loan consultant for a referral, as they have most likely worked with several realtors and would be able to give you a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. George Orwell s Emphasis Of The Two Minutes Hate The Reason Behind George Orwell s Emphasis of the Two Minutes Hate Many technological advancements have been made throughout the years, and almost all people have access to some form of technology. In 1984 this is also true with technological advancements being made to their television and broadcasting systems. The technological advancements made to these items is the reason for George Orwell including the Two Minutes Hate in his book. He puts a lot of emphasis on this idea in the beginning of the book, but this emphasis is not only to show his predictions for technology. The reason for emphasis of the Two Minutes Hate in 1984 is the timeframe when George Orwell wrote it, and his commentary on the downsides of technology. The time frame that this book was written fits the reason as to why he is so vast in describing technology, as the television was just making its appearance when this book was written (1984). The idea that a television could do all of the things that it does in this book would have been mind blowing to the population. The fact that technology like this was new allowed Orwell to make any prediction that he wanted to without being shot down, because there was no one who would have been able to prove him wrong. The Two Minutes Hate allowed him to express how he felt about technologies future, while still being able to successfully show a totalitarian leader. The timeframe this book was written in is a main component as to why Orwell emphasizes the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The film is the greatest medium since the invention of movable type for exchanging ideas and information, and it is no more at its best in light entertainment than literature is at its best in the light novel. Orson Welles Orson Welles was passionate about film. By the young age of 25, he had directed, produced, and starred in what is today considered by most to be the greatest movie ever made, Citizen Kane. The Virtual And The Real Economic Worlds 1.1 Introduction The virtual and the real economic worlds are intermingling more than ever before, raising the possibility that cryptocurrency might eventually replace the government run system of euros, dollars and yen. Before extensively explaining why Bitcoin, a virtual currency, will have a financial impact, we must first understand what it is exactly. Bitcoin is an online digital currency, created in 2009 by a Japanese man with the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto .¹ While many believe this currency is backed by a physical institution or pegged by a commodity, it is simply a mathematical algorithm free of regulation that acts as an alternative to the banking system. With digital currency such as Bitcoin, there is no central bank or government to trust, you ve just got to trust the math. People are losing faith in traditional credit unions and are looking for new stores of value. CryptoCurrency allows anybody to have a bank in their pocket. Simply put, the way the internet changed how the world communicates, bitcoin changes the way money works. 1.2 Forms of Money Digital currency is going to happen, in fact, it s already happening. Comparing Creation Myths of Ancient Egypt and The Christian Bible Creation in Ancient Egyptian religion can be much different than the creation account taken from The Bible. The versions range from a one god myth (Ptah; see picture) to the more common creator out of Nun, which in itself has several derivations. The Ogdoad is a grouping of eight gods that existed before the creator and formed him. This version is taken from Middle Egypt at Hermopolis. The most popular creation myth, in present day is the one god myth. It existed yet, had a brief life and it was in the minority. Here Ptah was the closest thing to monotheism that the ancients had. This is a popular theme in Memphite theology, but it was present in parts of Egypt. Ptah supposedly had all that is manifest in thought and then created them with his Word (Baines, 1991). Life Of Frederick Douglas And Benito Cerano Essay Education Frees the Mind and Body Until justice is blind to color, until education is unaware of race, until opportunity is unconcerned with the color of men s skins, emancipation will be a proclamation but not a fact (Lyndon B. Herman Melville lived from August, 1819 September 28, 1891, while Frederick Douglass lived from February, 1818 February 20, 1895. Yet these two narratives couldn t have been more different. While taking a look at the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas and Benito Cerano we can see these two insights of their world. I will be delving into how these two narratives show the condoning of racialized slavery, the endorsing of rebellion, and their individual perspectives. There is one thing that combines these two and that is their education. Education is what shifts the mind from the mind of a brute regardless of color to the level of where color and racism don t exist. If there is one thing that racism needs it needs support and to be condoned because without it this, it no longer exists and both Frederick Douglass and Herman Melville show how racialized slavery at this time was condoned and accepted and why. Social status can be defined as the level of prestige or relevance one possesses in society, while a status set is an assortment of responsibilities which stem directly from one s standing in society. Although each one occupies a certain position in society, one factor or position is paramount to the other, which is referred to as the master status(Steckley,2014). During this period, she learns new ideas from the chimps and finds herself back, and understands the complicated relationship between scientific ideas and religious beliefs. • 29. Utopian Urbanism That Forms Utopic Degeneration From recent years, utopian urbanism connects with the so called crisis of modernist urbanism that forms utopic degeneration. Utopia has developed to mean a community with a visionary system of political and societal perfection, where cities that function to improve the daily lives of its citizens; an ideal society, However these concepts are more often than not depicted as an impossible dream, yet too bold, too radical to ever exist in real life. Some utopian visions are focused on new technology, whereas others are on intact landscapes. In other occasions, some are based on new social orders, but all were combined under a radical avant garde and progressive architecture. It is this, their new and bold concepts that drive the imagination of architects and town planners. Although rarely realized in full, principles from some utopian visions have been adopted in part and have had significant influence on existing cities such as New York, Chandigarh and Paris. They are a catalyst for generating ideas and new forms of thinking that leads to, for better or for worse the many innovations in 21st century urban planning. Since utopian thinking can produce a vision of the future that is achievable, what is the connection between having a vision of the future, whether achievable or not, and utopian thinking? The concept of utopia, derived from Thomas Mores, in his famous text in 1516 where he refers a place as to both somewhere good and to nowhere. The connections between utopian ... Software Testing Software Testing Carnegie Mellon University 18 849b Dependable Embedded Systems Spring 1999 Authors: Jiantao Pan mailto:%20jpan@cmu.edu Abstract: Software testing is any activity aimed at evaluating an attribute or capability of a program or system and determining that it meets its required results. [Hetzel88] Although crucial to software quality and widely deployed by programmers and testers, software testing still remains an art, due to limited understanding of the principles of software. The difficulty in software testing stems from the complexity of software: we can not completely test a program with moderate complexity. Testing is more than just debugging. The purpose of testing can be quality assurance, verification and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But this alone will not guarantee to make the software better, because the Complexity Barrier [Beizer90] principle states: Software complexity(and therefore that of bugs) grows to the limits of our ability to manage that complexity. By eliminating the (previous) easy bugs you allowed another escalation of features and complexity, but his time you have subtler bugs to face, just to retain the reliability you had before. Society seems to be unwilling to limit complexity because we all want that extra bell, whistle, and feature interaction. Thus, our users always push us to the complexity barrier and how close we can approach that barrier is largely determined by the strength of the techniques we can wield against ever more complex and subtle bugs. [Beizer90] Regardless of the limitations, testing is an integral part in software development. It is broadly deployed in every phase in the software development cycle. Typically, more than 50% percent of the development time is spent in testing. Testing is usually performed for the following purposes: * To improve quality. As computers and software are used in critical applications, the outcome of a bug can be severe. Bugs can cause huge losses. • 39. Ellipsis Of Subjects And Objects In Mandarin Chinese Ellipsis of Subjects and Objects in Mandarin Chinese Mandarin Chinese as one of the unique languages in the world has many significant features, and one of them is ellipsis of subjects and objects. In English, a complete sentence consists of at least three basic elements which are a subject, an object, and a verb. However, compare with English, Mandarin Chinese does not have strict grammatical rules to form a complete sentence because people can leave out subjects or objects when they talk to each other. Although there are many sentences in Mandarin Chinese lack of subjects or objects, the sentences are still clear and grammatically correct. Therefore, can we conclude that subjects and objects are not necessary for spoken Mandarin Chinese? In other words, when can a speaker omit the subject or the object in Mandarin Chinese? Ellipsis of subjects also occurs in spoken English, but it normally in a set phrase. For example, people often say see you tomorrow rather than I will see you tomorrow. Moreover, due to grammatical requirement, not every sentence in English can omit the subject. Although sometimes the sentence is still understandable without the subject, the meaning will become ambiguous. Compare with English, ellipsis of subjects is more common in spoken Mandarin Chinese. Unlike English, it does not have any grammatical restriction and can be used in any sentence. Therefore, In order to have a better understanding of ellipsis of subjects and objects in Mandarin Chinese, I use examples from video recording that I recorded in an apartment. The comparison of specific race gender victim combinations reveals that white female victim cases are the only victim race gender combination in which the odds of receiving a death sentence are significantly different from any other reference group (i.e., white male, black female, or black male victims). They argue that the observed white female effect is consistent with the historically increased concern and ruthless response to the victimization of white females in American culture (Holcomb, Williams, and Demuth 886). The perceived victimization of white females, especially by nonwhite offenders, has considerable symbolic power in the United States and has been used to support a variety of social and political goals (Langum; Morgan 55).
