According to CDC (2016), one out of three American adults suffers from hypertension (HTN). This
accounts for about 75 million or 29% of the adult population in the United States. Uncontrolled HTN
is the leading cause of myocardial infarction, chronic kidney diseases (CKD), strokes, and
hypertensive heart diseases (HHD) (CDC, 2016). According to a report from CDC (2016), HTN costs
48.6 billion dollars including health care expenditures, medications and missed days of work.
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services (2013), among 26,448,196 residents of
Texas, 170.1 death rates related to HHD, 40.1 related to stroke and 15.9 related to CKD consecutively.
AHRQ (2013) health expenditure data demonstrates that the southern region of the United States,
which includes Texas, exceeded the average health expenditure for a hypertensive patient to a cost of
$805 per hypertensive person. Two recent peer review audits of twenty charts at Southmore Medical
Clinic revealed that we were practicing with only a 45% compliance rate with the Joint National
