Summary Of On Natural Death By Lewis Thomas
On Natural Death
In his essay On Natural Death , research pathologist, medical doctor, and biologist Lewis Thomas
attempts to console the reader about the weighty topic of death by referencing his own
observations, citing scientific facts and statistics, and using the universal fear and unknown of
eternal rest. Thomas first points to the example of the unforeseen death of an elm tree in his own
backyard. The death of an inanimate lifeform is something with which most people are familiar and
probably even comfortable. This first hand experience displays a situation in which death is quick
and free of pain. It also shows how quickly death can tranpire; in this situation, the tree appeared
to be in perfect health just a week before its sudden passing. The story of a dying mouse displays
Thomas s own sorrow at the demise of a fellow mammal and former participant in life. The reader
is naturally brought to empathize with Thomas s sentiments by his use of firsthand emotions and
experiences. Thomas even calls upon the reader to understand the feelings of the mouse itself by
describing what the experience likely felt to the mouse painless to the extent that the mouse is
inclined to shrug. Another of his observations is that of two soldiers unfortunate fatalities after
being in a mortal automobile accident. This example brings the reality of death even closer to the
reader, as this time the it is experienced by human beings not unlike the reader. This situation is
akin to that

The New York Time Article By Timothy William Essay
In the New York Time Article by Timothy William, Inquiry to Examine Racial Bias in the San
Francisco Police Department, first thing to remember known as implied social perception, implicit
bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an
unconscious manner. Another key point of argument is that there is no systematic bias in the
criminal justice base on race. To point out, in performing their policing duties, policeofficer are able
to exercise a high degree of discretion. This means that they have a have a broad freedom to
make a decision about how to act on the given situation. For this reason some police officer
deliberately use their wide power of discretion and their authority to perform acts of misconduct.
In this article it is generally agreed that discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin is morally
wrong and a violation of the principle of impartiality. In fact impartiality principles requires that
those who are equal be treated equally based on similarities, and that race not be a relevant
consideration in the assessment. However, in May, District Attorney George Gascon appointed a
three judge body of distinguished jurists to look into bias in the department following a series of
misconduct scandals, the most troubling being a group of police officers who were caught sending
racist text messages. Now, the scope, aim, participants and timeline of the ongoing investigation
have been revealed in a series

Library Interview Analysis
Introduction I started the process of seeking an interview about two weeks before the assignment
was do. I had email several places and the response was almost the same for them all. They could
only meet with me after the assignment was due. I then remember a small library in the city that I
reside in and that was the Harrison Township Public Library.
The Interview The interview was held Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Harrison Township Public
library. I arrived 15 minutes before 11:00 A.M. and did last minute question changes before
walking into the library. The library is quite small (perhaps 2000 square feet in total size). I talk to
the librarian on staff and she directed me to the main office area that was at one point a storage
closest. That was when I meet with the Director of the Harrison Township Public Library, Dan
Hutchins. I started off the interview asking him what he was responsible for managing. He was in
charge of the hiring, firing, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Things are getting tougher everyday (2017) for librarians and that to make a living as a librarian
(which in his eyes is working fulltime) you have to move where the jobs are... and you have to
love what you do... (2017). His reasoning is that because it s getting harder, you have to love it to
keep pushing on for that living to be a possibility. He also said that networking is also a very big
key that I need to start as soon as possible. Get your name and accomplishments out there and to
make contacts (2017) not just for networking (which is important) but for day to day advice.
Conclusion
Overall, I learned much with my time with the Director of the Harrison Public Library, Dan
Hutchins. He was a man on integrity and compassion for his field and gave me important
insights on how it could be for me one day as a manager or leader in the librarian field. It s a tough
world and this interview move me one step closer to facing it head

Malcom X And The Civil Rights Of Malcolm X
By definition, civil rights are the rights of citizens to political and social equality. To simplify
that, civil rights are rights that every person should have, no matter what race, color, ethnicity,
etc. Some people believed so strongly that everyone should have civil rights, they were willing to
risk their own lives for it. People such as Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges,
Elizabeth Eckford, Ernest Green, Hazel Massery, and many others. One of the many civil rights
activists was Malcolm Little, who later changed his name to Malcolm X. Malcolm X was one of the
activists who fought back violently. All of these civil rights activists wanted generally the same
thing. Dr. King wants the same thing I want. Freedom Malcolm X. Many of them used words, and
peaceful protests, many of which were led by Martin Luther King Jr. Malcolm X strongly believed
that peace would never solve anything, so he decided to use violence to get his way.
Malcolm X was one of the many activists in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Malcolm X, born

Muhammad and him created a good bond and he took part in gaining civil rights for African
Americans. On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X got assassinated by members of the Nation of
Islam. Before his assassination, he had received many death threats by African American
Muslims, and on February 14, a week before he got shot, his house was set ablaze, presumably by
the same group of people that shot him. Malcolm X is one of the many great leaders that
participated in the long and difficult struggle for civil rights. Even today, many of those people are
remembered, and thanked, whether they are still alive or not. The struggle that all of these people
overcame was very difficult, and everyone might not be equal without those

Corruption In Canterbury Tales
A medieval miller was a worker that would grind grain at the mill to produce flour and meal. In
Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, the Miller is a deceitful man that advances in her
career through deception and tells a fabliau, a comical fable told in verse that is characterized by
sexual obscenity. Fabliaux were generally told by jongleurs, or medieval entertainers. This
particular fabliau is a bawdy tale that discusses a scandalous affair. Through the Miller s description
as a thieving and scheming peasant and the Miller s raunchy tale, Chaucer criticizes the dangerous
precedent of corruption set by the nobilitywhich consequently spreads to all classes due to esteem
and success amassed by corruption and the stereotype of the Third Estate or lower class as lewd
and having a lack of intelligence.
Chaucer s description of the Miller as deceitful and thieving through his appearance and actions
criticizes the upper class tendency to underestimate the ability of the lower class. The upper class is
so consumed with maintaining their image of affluence and looking down on the lower class, they
fail to recognize that peasants can learn to imitate their habits of corruption that lead to immense
wealth. The Miller is depicted as a well built, muscular man who wears a whit cote and a blew hood
and has a red beard as any sowe or fox that would steal from his customers by selling his grain for
three times its worth, yit he hadde a thombe of gold (554,565 566). The Miller

Critically Discuss the Factors Which Contribute to...
Critically discuss the factors which contribute to building cohesive groups/teams.
The purpose of the essay is to discuss what factors can contribute to building cohesive groups. There
are many factors which can be useful in developing perfectionism within a group. These factors are
as follow: membership and work environment factors, organisational factors and group development
and maturity. Meredith Belbin s nine team roles also determine the degree to which cohesiveness
is maintained. In order to discuss these factors, this essay will define what a group team is and
present two different kinds of groups. Second, some of these factors contributing to success of
group work will be described. Next, this essay will also focus on the role of ... Show more content

A team can be successful if the members know each other for a reasonable time. Moreover, they
can build trust within such a group and as a result it can help them in building confidence to
perform tasks better (Mullins, 2010). Thus the time, individuals skills, and the size of the group are
significant aspects in building successful teams.
Work environment is another factor which can help build and maintain perfectionism among team
members. Nature of the task can contribute to the task and the degree of task difficulty should be
moderated because too difficult tasks can cause conflicts, too easy one however boredom.
Communication is also very important and tasks should be communicated clearly which can lead to
cohesiveness. Technology is another aspect worth considering as the resources available in the
workplace can contribute to developing successful teams (Mullins, 2010). Therefore, the manager
should organise work according to the sources they have.
Organisational factor can also play an important part in maintaining successful teams. Successful
team work depends on management and leadership styles. Encouragement and understanding of
individual s problems should be maintained. Human Resource policies and procedures should also
be applied fairly and there should not be any act of discrimination towards people. Success is
another key element bringing success in a team (Mullins, 2010). Thus a manager should take an
active part in

Reflection On Interpersonal Communication
Reflection Paper I have taken Interpersonal Communication before during the summer 2016, but
I didn t pass it mainly because I wasn t as focused as I was in this class. Professor Castro just
made it fun. Her lectures and her stories made it interesting. Every Mondays and Wednesdays, I
had three classes. Interpersonal Communication would be my first class to start my day. Then
two classes after that. I ended up dropping those two classes. I was supposed to drop this class
too but I didn t because I wanted to learn more. I ve been in a relationship with my girlfriend for
almost a year and one of the problems we had was listening. Sometimes she wouldn t listen to me
or I just wouldn t listen to her at all. The day we had a lecture about listening in class, that same
morning, we got in an argument about how I don t listen to her. I always listen to her but not
when we argue. I usually avoid her when we are about to start arguing. I found it funny how the
professor somehow knew I was in trouble with listening and she decided to have a lecture on
listening. Unlike a history class or a math class or even reading class, this class actually helped
me outside of school. I also learned that my professor is a volunteer basically everywhere. She
participates in marches whenever she can. Her age doesn t stop her from making the community
better and standing up for what she believes in. She is an inspiration. She asked the class to
volunteer somewhere for three hours which was pretty cool. I haven t had any class in college
where volunteeringout in the community was a requirement. Because I had to volunteer for a
grade in class, I am now volunteering for the resist march in Los Angeles, June 11. I wouldn t be
going out to volunteer for this event if it weren t for this class. Knowing that my professor goes
to protests and marches at her age, she is truly an inspiration. I don t usually have time to go out
to marches anymore but seeing that she still does, I d want to participate more in the community.
Now only problem I had in this class was that I never really had my own seat. I moved to different
seats every time we had class. I felt very comfortable sittingin the back, but the professor doesn t
like having students

Merriam-Webster s Definition Of Submission
Submission As you read this you are probably sitting in a chair, before you sat down did you take
a moment to question whether the chair would hold you? You sat down and submitted to the chair
s ability to do what is was designed to do. When hearing the word submit the vast majority
automatically think of that in a negative form. Submit to the law, your parents, an employer, do
this, do that. Have you ever considered it as a positive act? Submission is trusting the abilities of
someone else and showing respect for status while demonstrating humility. What do trust and
submission have in common? Merriam Webster s definition of submit is to yield to governance or
authority. You are not giving up , you are putting your trust and confidence

Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the United Arab...
There are many social returns that can be gained from the Sougha program. Alleviation of
unemployment, women empowerment and the all important role of preserving indigenous Emirati
heritage are just examples of the social impact of Sougha. The program is cognizant of the fact that
a large population of Emiratis possesses enormous potential for entrepreneurship but is largely
unable to achieve employment. Because of the Sougha program, such individuals are able to access
assistance, both material and otherwise, which enables them to consequently enhance their
entrepreneurial skills and in effect, seize market opportunities (Sougha.com, 2012). As a result, the

There exist numerous differences between the type of social entrepreneurship exhibited by the
Khalifa Fund programs, and the general idea of commercial, entrepreneurship. But perhaps the
greatest similarity both types of entrepreneurships have is the pursuit of revenue. Both types of
entrepreneurship recognize opportunities for business and this precisely when the need to innovate
is invoked. However, for social entrepreneurs, the social missing of their innovation takes central
part and influences greatly how they perceive business opportunities. In most cases, ethics, integrity
and the demonstration of humanity creates a distinct contrast between social and commercial
entrepreneurship. In essence, a majority of social entrepreneurs associate their business with
communities that are relatively disadvantaged in terms of accessing resources. A key facet of
social entrepreneurship employed by the management of the fund is responsible leadership. All
four programs started by the Khalifa Fund are without a doubt socially engineered. Al Radda
recognizes the importance of empowering former inmates to venture into the world of business,
and this prevents the proliferation of crime in society. Isharq provides training assistance for people
emerging from drug addiction, and this serves to sanitize the society by addressing stringent issues
to do with drug and substance abuse. Sougha, which has previously been discussed,

A Report On Bmw Z8
To the casual observer, the BMW Z8 looks like a 1960s roadster, its swoopy retro esque lines
belying the fact that it first saw light of day in 1999. BMW wanted to create a car to celebrate the
turn of the millennium, bringing together its past and future in one design. Therefore the
aluminium bodied Z8 draws heavily from Z07 concept car seen only a few years earlier at the
1997 Tokyo Motor Show, which in turn pays homage to the original BMW 507from the 1950s. The
car was met with great excitement by both the motoring press and customers alike, an appearance
in the James Bond movie, The World is Not Enough cemented its place as a desirable exotic.
Rivals in this retro modern category were thin on the ground, and there were precious few cars to
which the Z8 could be compared, especially when looking at its traditional German counterparts.
BMW itself had a model range comprising only of the 3, 5 and 7 series with the recently
introduced X5 having just dipped an adventurous toe into untapped segments. The 8 series was in
its last year and rivals had a similarly modest set of offerings to choose from. You had to move to
look at niche manufacturers and up your budget considerably to find any meaningful challengers,
the Ferrari 360 and Aston Martin DB7 come to mind and while both have their merits, it is the Z8
that is now worth considerably more than either of those cars in today s market.

What Ancient Romans Did For Fun
Ancient Roman s have invented many of the games and sports many of us still play to this day. A
majority of the Roman people did not have much time to have fun because they were constantly
working and providing for their family. Although when they did have time to relax, Romans
enjoyed playing different kind of games and watching different kinds of entertainment. Theater,
sports, and chariot racingwere the three main things that Romans did for fun during this particular
time period. Some of the things ancient Romans did for fun were quite dangerous because of the
lack of the correct equipment or because of the intense violence between people and sometimes
even animals. These bloodthirsty shows were put on in front of crowds in large arenas... Show more

The equestrian events horse and chariot racing were among the oldest and most well liked
activities, in Rome, attending the chariot races became by far the most popular pastime. 250,000
people, perhaps one fourth of the city s population, gathered around the racetrack. In 680 B.C. the
first four horse race was held at the Olympic Games. The Greeks after some time added other
equestrian events such as the two horse chariot race and the mule cart race. During this time
period horse racing was much more dangerous than it was now because of their lack of equipment.
Charioteers and riders did not get the recognition that other athletes during this time period
received. For it was not the charioteers, or the runners that got the credit, but the owners of the
horses. Just as today s football and basketball fans cheer on their home teams, Roman racing
enthusiasts rooted for professional racing organizations represented by the colors white, red, green

Sumer People Research Paper
Sumerians... an ancient civilisation that most of you have probably never heard of. They were a
nation of people settled in Southern Mesopotamia which, is modern day Iraq and Kuwait. Not
only are these people one of the oldest civilisations in human history, with their existence dating
back to 5000 BCE, but they re influence on our lives today, 7000 years later, is incredible. The
Sumerpeople were the first to create a written language in 3500 3000 BCE, 2000 years before the
ancient Chinese. They were the first to enforce the idea of a set time for a work day, there is
evidence to suggest they invented the wheel, and are even responsible for time itself. The Sumer
people divided day and night into 12 hours each consisting of 60 minutes with each minute
consisting of 60 seconds, a method of time that is still used to this day. Apart from these incredible
advancements in early human history, the Sumer people are also recognised for being possibly the

To Kill A Mockingbird Real Courage Quotes
Harper Lee s definition of real courage Is not a man with a gun in his hand. It s when you know
you re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You
rarely win, but sometimes you do (Lee 149). This book is built around courage, many characters
help explain Harper Lee s definition of real courage. The ones that really stick out to me are Walter
Cunningham, Atticus Finch, and Mrs. Dubose.
My first example quote about Walter Cunningham is Reason I can t pass the first grade, Mr.

The doctor put her on it. She d have spent the rest of her life on it and died without so much

something to say about Scout, Jem and sometimes Atticus. When they were walking by her
house one day she made Jem the most mad she had ever been by bad mouthing her Atticus
because he was defending Tom Robinson. She said Your father s no better than the niggers and
trash he works for (Lee 135). Jem went crazy and got in trouble for ruining Mrs. Dubose s yard
with Scout s baton he bought her after she insulted Atticus. Later that night when Atticus was
walking home he saw Mrs. Dubose s house and assumed it was either Scout or Jem. He found
out it was jem and made her got over to apologize. Mrs. Dubose told tells her that she can pay her
back by coming over and reading to her for 2 hours everyday for a month. Jem was not happy
about the idea but agreed to do it if she would not get in anymore trouble. On the last day they
had to be there to read Atticus went over there when they got home and let the kids know that
she had passed. He then told them that the fits she had and the reason she was so mean was
because she was a morphine addict and was trying to break her addiction before she died so she
could die pure. This is courage because not many people can break an addiction and she had a
mindset that she was going to and did. She also knew that in some things you rarely win but

What Is The Use Of Pathos In Columbine And In Cold Blood
The literary nonfiction pieces Columbine, written by Dave Cullen, and In Cold Blood, written by
Truman Capote, uniquely develop the stories of their killers through the use of rhetorical devices
and careful presentation of information. Cullen frequently employs informal diction and teenage
slang to connect the reader to the mindsets of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Additionally,
Columbine features manipulation of syntax to emphasize significant information while presenting
it in a simple and understated manner. On the other hand, Capotecreates pathos while depicting
Perry Smith s passive and sentimental nature to make the reader feel sympathetic. Also, In Cold
Bloodutilizes imagery to make the reader view Dick Hickock as dangerous and... Show more

Early on, Capote makes Smith seem a more sympathetic character, Yes, and he had told Dick
was true... Sierra Madre? (Capote, 17). Capote makes Perry seem almost childlike as he describes
Perry s naive plan to search for gold in the Sierra Madre, which causes the reader to wrongly
assume Smith is innocent, or at least more so than Hickock. While describing the murder of the
Clutter family, Perry states, And I thought... So I went back upstairs, (277). Truman Capote
deliberately includes Perry s feeling that It was like [he] wasn t a part of it. More as though [he]
was reading a story, to show the level of dissociation Perry experiences. Even after Smith is
found guilty of murder, the reader still feels some sympathy for Perry as Capote hints that Perry
cannot be held accountable for his own actions. Just before he is hanged, Smith remarks, It would
be meaningless to apologize for what I did. Even inappropriate. But I do. I apologize, (392 393).
Capote includes Perry s last words, which carry significant emotional weight, to evoke a final
sympathetic reaction in the reader. Through Perry Smith, Capote creates pathos to demonstrate the
harsh nature of capital punishment and cause the reader to wonder if it is the right

We Are Not Grizzly Bear Analysis
Liu Method Analysis: We Are Not Grizzly Bears Brian Pattron analyzes that the ideal lifestyle is
veganism, based on the observations of the animal kingdom. Pattron uses an inductive format by
introducing examples, slowly building to his statement. Pattron begins his opening statement with a
question as a hook, What are humans really supposed to eat? (Patton 1). The hook clues the
audience into the subject of the article. He then uses evidence stating the observations of nature,
The grizzly bear an omnivore is fast and strong jawed, with razor sharp teeth (Pattron 1). By
presenting his evidence before his statement, it gives anticipation to his argument. He then
introduces his claim, Based on the logic of the animal kingdom, we are designed to eat plants

expand on his ideas introduced by the shorter syntax. Pattron relies on imagery and irony to
support veganism. In particular, Pattron states The grizzly bear an omnivore is fast and strong

The Rashomon Effect
The various interpretations of the same event by different people in which contradict each
other, is known as the Rashomon effect. The phrase comes from the film Rashomon, and it is
about a murder and rape case. It also involves the different stories of each witness. Many times,
when something happens, people tend to share about the specific event based on what they hear
or see. In this case, point of view plays a great role. As far as the Rashomon film itself, there are
many cases in society ranging from minor ones to major ones which use the Rashomon effect.
For example, the Orenthal James Simpson (OJ) case. The case itself deals with a former football
player, O.J. Simpson who is charged with the murder of his ex wife Nicole Brown Simpson and
her friend Ron Goldman. What I find both interesting and revealing, is the fact that each witness
that testifies, describes O.J. s mode in a different way based on their perception of him. On July 10,
1995, the murder trial of O.J. Simpson began with the testimony of his oldest daughter, 26, Arnelle
Simpson. Arnelle stated that her father was emotional, distraught, and out of control when he had

Development Program (TFLDP) and how the Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
offered as part of the program has influenced my current and future classroom practice. The
TFLDP is the official title given to the training program that all Teach First participants are
expected to complete. The program is two years in duration, throughout which, participants are
offered various forms CPD, all of which falls under three broad headings; Leading Self, Leading
People and Leading Learning. In this assignment, I will focus on how, in conjunction with Teach
First support staff and CPD opportunities, I have addressed two of the three key strands; Leading
Learning and Leading people. The first strand I will focus on is Leading Learning. I will describe
how I worked with my LeadershipDevelopment Officer and Educational Consultant to engage
passive learners by introducing cooperative learning into the classroom, I will critically reflect
on the progress we made towards the vision I created. Secondly, I will focus on how a session
forced me to address the wider issues facing my students outside of the classroom and the work
that I have done with the East Midlands Action Network (EMAN) to make progress towards
providing Socio economically disadvantaged children with enriching experiences.

My earliest memory I have is when my parents got divorced when I was five. I remember
wanting to leave with my dad but I couldn t I broke the screen window with my hand and had to
go get stitches on the Air Force Base. I grew up with my mom till I was 12 only seen my dad in
the summers. My mom did the best job seekers raising two kids by herself. I picked up
skateboarding as a hobby. My best friend lives two houses down he also got into skateboarding.
That would be my main focus for many years to come. It started out just skateboarding around
the neighborhood. Then they built the skate park Inner city. My mom would take me and my
friend a few times but the skate park clothes very soon. Then there was a empty pool company
that went out of business and someone turn that into a skate park. May brought and professional
skaters like Tony Hawk and Steve Cavaleiro. As I got older me and my best friend Casey started
building our own ramps. We do not lower doing but we were fast learners. A small ramp in the

Study Area Of East Harbor
Methods
Study Area East Harbor is a 291 hectare back barrier salt marsh and coastal lagoon that is located
within the Cape Cod National Seashore (CCNS), in Truro Massachusetts (Thiet et al. 2014a;
Thelen Thiet, 2009). The East Harbor system was artificially isolated from the Cape Cod Bay in
1868 when the original 1000 ft wide inlet was diked due to the construction of a causeway for
use by trains and automobiles (Portnoy et al. 2006). In 1894, a drainage system was installed
that allowed freshwater to escape the system (Portnoy et al. 2006). However, no sea water could
enter the system due to a one way flapper valve and the exclusion of the tides caused the salinity
to decline from 25 30 parts per thousand (ppt) into brackish water with a salinity of around 5 ppt
(Portnoy, 2013; Smith Medeiros, 2013). The creation of a nearly fresh water system ultimately led
to a variety of ecological problems in East Harbor (Smith Medeiros, 2013), and many native
estuarine fauna and flora were extirpated (Portnoy, 2013). The tidal restriction caused summertime
oxygen stress (Thelen, 2009) and in 2001, an oxygen depletion created a fish kill involving around
40,000 alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) and several hundred white perch (Morone Americana)
(Portnoy, 2013). This, along with a multitude of previous water quality related problems prompted
restoration efforts to begin (Thelen, 2009). In 2002, after nearly 150 years of tidal flow restriction,
the flapper valve was permanently

Benefits Of Web Application Development
Web application is gradually making way into businesses owing to its multi functionality and
client centric benefits. A web application is a mix of two script namely client side like HTML
and JavaScript and the server side like PHP. The former script is responsible for presenting data
while the latter is utilized for date retention.
A web apps project involves primarily 4 phases of project analysis, planning, development and
formalization. All 4 phases work in tandem with each other to build an all inclusive, usable
application for the user. Though, it may be sometimes too tough for users to switch between two
web applications nevertheless, this does not wear down its vitality.

Opa is good for users too, as they do not have to sue a plug in to use Opa applications. It offers a
rather compact and quick platform for web application development.
Browser Compatibility
It is imperative to test run web applications for cross browser compatibility, firstly on Firefox, as
it offers an easy to debug and issue resolving option. Other considerations while designing a web
application for browsers are:
Use div instead of tables as they offer the same functionality and can be easily spot by browsers
Use Internet Explorer 6 to showcase images that are transparent
Use JavaScript scroller to read marquee HTML tag on Internet Explorer
Define the exact image dimensions for testing images in Firefox
Use HTML embed tag to include background sound and change its attributes for repetition effect
Reset CSS to avoid inconsistent effects of the web page across browsers
Use commonly used fonts which can be found on every user s computer
Use relative positioning of elements so they look consistent on all browsers
Interface Development
A good web application is the one that offers a smooth interface experience for its users. There are
ways to create smart, intuitive and visually appealing interfaces, these are:
Select the most common functions of your application and cut down the rest. This can be
accomplished via pop up menus or controls on the screen

Reflective Essay On Greek Culture
My experience attending the Seminar on Greece with Dr. Khosrowshahi was a very interesting, fun
and informational way to gain knowledge of the different cultures and history of other parts of the
world. I do not have an extensive knowledge of Greek history or culture. I enjoyed learning the
different traditions and cultural rituals of the Greek culture. I learned a lot about the historyof
Greece and how much the history influences many other cultures throughout the world. The most
interesting fact and important impression I took away from the seminar is my Mother s name is
Diane , neither my mother or myself knew the Greek history behind her name. I enjoyed how Dr. K
used different ways to involve the students at the seminar to become engaged in learning and
experiencing Greek culture. I found the drum performance quite exciting and interesting. Also, the
young ladies demonstrating their cultural dance skills were very entertaining. After learning more
about Greek culture, I found it very interesting how much the alphabet and language influences
American English.
The part of the seminar I enjoyed most was Dr. K demonstrating his knowledge of Greek music by
demonstrating the drum. I enjoyed many other aspects of the seminar as well. I enjoyed the visuals,
including the pictures and videos used to provide a visual experience of Greek culture. The Greek
culture artifacts and photos from previous trips to Greece was inspiring and exciting to experience
as well. Also, student interaction was impressive throughout the entire seminar. There is not
anything I disliked about the seminar. The only thing I did not like was having to take off work to
attend. This is not anything involving the seminar or the presentation. Furthermore, I am thankful I
was able to have the opportunity to take off work to attend this continuing education experience.
Prior to this seminar, I was not aware of the extensive history of the Olympic Games. It was
interesting to learn the Olympics originated before Christ. Also, the Olympics truly represent the
uniting of different cultures, religions and races. This is a very inspirational and motivating
experience considering the current division of cultures. When

Romantic Jealousy s Effect On Self-Esteem
Romantic Jealousy s Effect on Self Esteem
Evolutionary psychology has presented the theory that romantic jealousy, the feelings of threat or
loss to an important emotional relationship, evolved as an adaptation to protect investment
relationships (Buss, 1998; 2005). According to evolutionary theory, jealousyserves as an advantage
in mate retention and sexual reproduction for those who are able to effectively express such
feelings of romantic jealousy (Wade Walsh, 2008). Central to human social patterns, jealousy has
been shown to be a universal emotion (Buunk Hupka, 1987). Much of evolutionary theory
focuses on sex differences in the experience of romantic jealousy between males and females
(Buss, 1992; Sagarin, et al, 2003; Sagarin Guadagno, 2004), while other bodies of research
primarily focus on personality traits predisposing individuals to exhibit these jealous feelings
(Wade Walsh, 2008). Previous empirical research expands on personality theory, investigating the
effect of self esteem levels on an individual s tendency toward feelings of jealousy (Steward
Beatty, 1985), though few studies have explored the reverse direction of jealousy s potential impact
on self esteem. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay about The Autobiography of Malcolm X
The Autobiography of Malcolm X The Autobiography of Malcolm X is the story of Malcolm X,
an African American male growing up in the United States in the mid 1900 s. At this time in
America prejudice and segregation were widespread and much a part of everyday life. Malcolm
takes the reader through his experiences with American society, which rejects him. This rejection,
along with the inferiority cast upon all Black Americans, forces these males to search for
acceptance. They are forced to search for purpose in causes greater than single individuals. As the
book shows, this is evident in Malcolm throughout his life and in the life of other African American
males. The Autobiography shows how during this time in American history... Show more content on

This unit was exactly the further acceptance Malcolm, and all rejected males, looked for at this
time in American history. With Malcolm s imprisonment ended the acceptance of the ghetto
hustler and gangster life. In prison Malcolm had to find a new place to turn for acceptance. As
his father did, Malcolm turned to religion. The religion he turned to, The Nation of Islam or
more commonly known as the Black Muslims, were a group of African Americans who believed,
among other things, that whites were the roots of evil. Malcolm became immersed in his
religion. It seeped into every part of his life. For the next years I was the nearest thing to a hermit
in the Norfolk Prison Colony. I have never been more busy in my life (173). Malcolm wrote many
letters to family and friends about his new found faith and , most importantly, he found the
acceptance he longed for with the teachings of Mr. Muhammad. This acceptance gave him purpose
and after his release Malcolm became one of the foremost representatives of the Nation of Islam.
After Malcolm separated from the Nation of Islam, part by choice but part by force, he had to turn
elsewhere for the acceptance and purpose, which all African American males needed at this time.
With his national prominence he formed a new organization. This organization would be the last
place he found acceptance because of his untimely death. His organization, the Muslim Mosque

Essay about The Affects of the Attributes of Parks on Real...
Introduction
Initially the question of the affects of parks and their various attributes on real estate value may
seem an absurd question for an Economic Developer to think about. However, the value of real
estate is of prime importance to the community and the Economic Developer due to the nature of
land as an appreciating commodity. Therefore it is necessary that we study the possibility that real
estate and land values could be modified by the a park. By understanding the consequences of
these uses of land can be an effective strategy for passive Economic Development. Rather than
making direct improvements to each parcel we change land uses near real estate clusters to change
the values of many properties at once. In order to better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Public spaces that lack any form of green space are also not considered in this study, these are
places like Fountain Square in Cincinnati that have little residential land use surrounding it. Non
residential real estate demands were ignored in researching this issue because it was assumed
that only residential real estate buyers demand proximity to a location attribute like a park
space. Non residential entities should primarily be focused on factors such as infrastructure,
spatial needs and accessibility as opposed to more aesthetic or resident serving attributes. Park
shape, function, size and service area are also discussed. Park shape has to do with the geometry
of the park relative to land uses surrounding it. Park function will always be associated with the
types of activities that can take place in the park. These activities can include passive
characteristics and active characteristics. Passive characteristics are non intensive properties such
as the presence of benches, good landscaping or other decorative elements such as ponds, gardens
and artistic pieces. Active characteristics refer to things that people use such as playgrounds,
fields of play for various sports, pools and pavilions or other activity hosting structures.
Accessibility will also be discussed in terms of the number of people that will be able to utilize a
certain characteristic of the park.

Decisions In Cover-Up And Good Guys Always Win
Decisions. Sometimes they are very hard to make, and sometimes they are very easy to make.
Sometimes decisions could have a very bad outcome if you choose the wrong option, others
have very minor consequences. In the stories Cover ups and the play Good Guys Always Win,
there are two characters that are faced with decisions that could result in a good outcome or a
bad outcome. In Cover ups the character that has to make the decision was Mrs. Kittredge, the
mother of a girl who s best friend was the arch enemy s son of their family. Mrs. Kittredge had to
choose whether or not to tell her daughter and her friend, named Jenna and Richard, that Jenna s
father had practically destroyed Richard s father s career. This decision seems very hard to make,

use to describe that perfect piece; modern . From modern chairs to modern woven carpets and out
of the norm modern toilet bowls there is one thing all of the designs of today have in common and
that is the word BAUHAUS. Bauhaus was a German art school started by Walter Gropiusand open

The Bauhaus school of art decided to leave behind the decorative style of creating and followed a
design approach that was more simplistic. Anything that didn t have a function or purpose when

Comparison of Fellini s Nights of Cabiria and La Dolce Vita
Nights of Cabiria and La Dolce Vita left me absolutely stunned, in awe of what I had just witnessed.
I found both of these films to be unspeakably beautiful, and in my opinion, the best out of all Fellini
s major motion pictures which I have attempted to view this semester. Both films are unmistakably
Fellini in the characteristic that define his films, especially through the world of fantasy, and
deserve a thorough comparison.
In La Dolce Vita, we are given a glimpse of a filmmaker that has moved far neo realist roots.
While Nights Of Cabiria was certainly a departure from neo realism, (and far less neo realist than
La Strada, which was just one picture before this one) it certainly had many more neo realist

La Dolce Vita shows us the downward spiral of Marcello. He seeks meaning, truth and love in
the empty lives of the upper class. The disgusting lifestyle instead leads to his denial of emotion,
his collapse and finally his complete lack of emotional and spiritual hope. Cabiria is eventually
able to look beyond the façade of the rich, while Marcello becomes a victim of his own illusions.
It is for this reason that Cabiria can be seen as a stronger character than Marcello. If it can be said
that the film follows the emotional, spiritual, and mental growth of Cabiria, it then follows that La
Dolce Vita follows the emotional, spiritual, and mental collapse of Marcello.
One of the flaws of both Cabiria and Marcello is their desire to succumb to their needs. Cabiria
wants so badly to be loved and to have love, and Marcello wants so badly to find truth and
happiness in the pleasures of high society that they become blind to reality. As we know from the
first scene, Cabiria has a habit of falling in love too quickly. We find how deeply she carries this
fantasy when she becomes hypnotized. This blind fantasy has lead to nothing but heartbreak, and it
is this realization that leads to her salvation. Marcello also wants to give into his fantasy and desire,
seeking redemption through love. In the fountain with Sylvia, he proclaims her to be the ultimate
female. Once again, the water motif comes in to demonstrate

The Polygraph
A lie detector test is commonly called a polygraph. They are used to record a subjects natural
reactions, such as an increase in heart rate, to questions. The polygraph tracks and records these
factors using multiple smaller devices. It has been built and developed since 1878 (CГґtГ©,
Michel, Sergeant). The polygraphhas its advantages and disadvantages, some people even claim it
can be tricked. The United States uses them, but scientist are still uncertain of their accuracy. Many
other countries do not use them out of concern for accuracy. In recent years, their use has decreased
due to the uncertainty. Polygraphs have always been, and might always be, controversial.

A lot of things about them have their ow positives ad negatives to them. It seems to be most
successful in getting guilty subjects to confess out of fear. Others countries, such as Europe,
have deemed the polygraph as far too unreliable for any evidence to be used in court. ( Palmer,
Alun.) Part of why they are unreliable traces back to the fact that people fear them. This is an
advantage and a disadvantage. It has been considered an advantage because guilty subjects likely
to confess out of fear for the test. At the same time, an innocent subject could fail the test out of
fear. Polygraph tests, in a way, detect nervousness. This can lead to false results. (Robinson, Bryan.)
Another disadvantage already mentioned earlier is that businesses, companies, and corporations
cannot legally use a polygraph test on employees or potential employees. The main advantage of
Polygraphs is what they have done for technology. Scientist have been working on them since 1878

The settlement of refugees was a considerable financial strain. Partition also divided
complementary economic zones. Under the British, jute and cotton were grown in the eastern part
of Bengal, the area that became East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), but processing took place mostly
in the western part of Bengal, which became the Indian state of West Bengal in 1947. As a result,
after independence India had to employ land previously used for food production to cultivate cotton

Structural deficiencies, such as the need for institutional changes in agriculture and the slow

During this period the government had to rely heavily upon the private savings (financing from

gradually started having a strong say in the nation s policies and economic reforms due to the
financial dependency on them.

Supply Of Viable Grocery Store Options
In the Logan Square neighborhood, there is a lack of viable grocery store options. Nonetheless,
throughout the City of Chicago there is an abundant amount of restaurants and food options;
however, many of these food options are not the healthiest. As stated by the Food Empowerment
Project, a food desert is typically Described as geographic areas where residents access to
affordable, healthy food options [...] is restricted or nonexistent due to the absence of grocery
stores within convenient travelling distance. Moreover, the people who live in these food
deserts are low income families and minorities. These food deserts are the leading cause of food
insecurity. Food insecurity is defined as limited or uncertain availability of nutritious food
options. Throughout the Chicago area, there are countless unhealthy food options. Just walking
down a street, one is able to see at least one fast food place. Since fast food places are within
walking distance, people will visit them more often. For example, in Logan Square there is a
Dunkin Donuts, Burger King, and Taco Bell all within a minute of each other. In addition to those
fast food places, there is an alarming number of small convenience stores in a given neighborhood.
These convenience stores make it Difficult to locate foods that are culturally appropriate for

Carl Jung s Theory Of The Mind Challenged The Existing Dogma
Carl Gustav Jung II was a psychiatrist whose theories of the mind challenged the existing dogma.
His works with human cognition, the basic structure of the psyche, and association experiments are
widely known today in the form of the concepts of the introvert and the extrovert, psychological
archetypes, and basic tests of word association. Although many basic principles of psychology today
are based upon his original discoveries and theories, they were not conceived without external
insight. Social, economic, and cultural influences upon Carl Junggreatly affected his lifetime
achievements and provided inspiration for many of his theories. Born Carl Gustav Jung II on
July 26, 1875, to Emilie Preiswerk and the pastor Paul Jung in Kesswil, Switzerland, he was not
without a notable ancestral background. Jung s paternal grandfather, Dr. Med. Karl Gustav Jung I,
an expatriate from Germany who engaged in liberal political agitation, drew fame to himself upon
moving to Switzerland when he reformed the University of Basel, established moderate wealth,
and participated in local government. (Bair 7 8). Carl Jung s maternity was no less distinguished
in its own right; both of Emilie Preiswerk s parents were favorably regarded in their own
community, though both were intensely superstitious, ascribing mystical causes to their frequent
visions, which were peculiar to the Preiswerk family. The hereditary nature of these visions
accounts for a set of Jung s experiences in his youth (Bair

The Role Of Medical Experiments In The Holocaust
When most people think of the holocaust, they think of people being forced into concentration
camps, they think of Jews and Nazis, they think of cruelty and death. But what most people don t
think of, is all the experiments that went on, all the medical experiments. The Nazi doctors wanted
to find cures for medical conditions that most everyone wanted to cure, but these doctors went
about finding the cure a little differently. They would take prisoners they had and experiment on
them in ways of cruelty hard to even imagine. This will only be about one of the many experiments
done, the freezing and hypothermia experiments. Doctor Sigmund Rascher was the one overseeing
this particular experiment, he mainly conducted the experiments at Dachau (Holocaust on Trial
http://www.pbs.org). He used over 300 hundred people in his experiments, all of them prisoners in
the concentration camps and all of them young, strong Jewsand/or Russians(Jewish Law Articles
http://www.jlaw.com) . He had two parts to his experiment, how long it took to freeze to death, and
what the best way to revive a person was (Remember.org http://remember.org/educate/medexp). To
freeze a person, they were either left outside, naked, or submerged in a vat of freezing ice water,
also naked (Remember.org http://remember.org/educate/medexp). The water was the fastest way of

Even now, just reading about it happening makes it hard to believe these were actually people
being put through these tortuous events. Maybe that made it easier for Dr. Rascher, or maybe he
didn t care in the first place. Either way, over 80 people died in this one experiment alone
(Holocaust on Trial http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/holocaust/experiside.html)

Comparing Poems Power Plant-Bops And The Seedling
The story s last paragraph and the poem s last stanza contribute to the development of each text s
theme because they sum up the idea of good fruit of the spirit and perfectness. For example, in
the last stanza, The Seedling tells how both sun and showers help you through hard times, much
like how people of good fruit and people of bad fruit influence and help a situation. It also say in
lines 31 and 32 you will rise to light and beauty. Virtue s fair, unfading flowers. Similar to how
when you rise to Heaven you rise to beauty and Heaven is one place flowers go unfaded. The last
paragraph of Power Plant Bots mentions the thought that if only perfect water is consumed, the
plant would become a perfect plant. There are also some differences... Show more content on

In Power Plant Bots , the last paragraph contributes to the stories theme by going in depth about
the three types of Plant Bots, all while telling a life lesson. In The Seedling the last stanza had a
more hidden theme rather than out in the open. The story told how a seedling was in a dark
place, but was determined to do the best it could. Soon later it lifted a leaflet out of its darkness
and ito the light, but the last stanza says that the sun and showers will help you through
lonesome and struggling hours, till you raise to light abd beauty, virtue s fair unfading beauty. I
soon realized the story was refering to someone in a dark place in their life, but decided to not
let that stop them from doing their best. This person soon brought another person (leaflet) out of
their dark place and the leaflet called others, and the others heard and wanted to follow and so
the seedling showed them the way. To me, showed them the way were words that stuck out to
me, and I read it as they took them to a good place (church) away from the dark place and let
them see the light (God). I think the sun and showers refer to good fruit of the spirit(sun) and bad
fruit of the spirit as well (showers). Although I see the themes very similar, the way the theme was
presented in the last paragraph/stanza made me have a different perspective that made me reread the

Should Wisconsin Accept The New Bill Of Student Rights Of...
For all humans in America, we should all believe that our rights are greatly valued. I believe that the
rights of students are valued just as much as human rights. More specifically, the right for student
privacy should extremely supported. It seems that the Supreme Court made a choice does not agree
with student rights. Nonetheless, the securityof an understudy s school information has an extensive
significance and are ensured by government and state directions. In the case that is review in the
article, the or EPIC opposes the state of Wisconsin. They claimed that the regulations given by the
government were simply not sufficient. They actually agreed the strength that the protection
students had is now decreased due to the choices of the Supreme Court. This also motivated them to
suggest that Wisconsin accept their new bill of rights which stood for student rights. It praised the
privacy approach for students and information surety.
In this event, they emphasised on the legislature to protect the security of a student information
could be broken as a moral matter to grow for the information technology community. Individual
data can be tracked in school records and should be ensured. These bill of rights for student
privacy explains Students have the right to secure and responsible data practices , (2016 EPIC).
It implies that data of school records will never be shown to anybody besides the correct people.
Unfortunately, it will not be so easy. The group did protest against this. Standing on the topic that

Indentured Servitude During Colonial America Essay
Indentured Servitude in Colonial America
William Gunnell, Jr. travelled with his parents from their home in Great Britain to Virginia
sometime before his tenth birthday in 1715. In Virginia, they became indentured servants for a man
named Richard Lee. Following his master s death, William s indenture was inherited by Richard s
son. William worked for the Lee family for six years as a clerk, running errands and keeping the
books. At the age of sixteen, William s contract ended, and he became a free man ( Indentured
Servants, n.d., para. 4). This is one of the better examples of indentured servitude in the colonies,
since most servants did not live to see the end of their contracts. In the colonies, indentured
servitude acted as a kind of contract based slavery in which free people were turned into property
for a term of four to seven years, on average. Their owners paid for their food, clothing, and shelter
on arrival in the colonies until the servants had completed their contract, upon which they were paid
freedom dues which could be anything from tools, land, or even guns ( Indentured Servants, n.d.,
para. 1).
The Beginning of Indentured Servitude
Upon coming to the Americas, settlers found quite a bit of land to farm on, but they lacked
enough labor to work it. The economy of many of the colonies also made it difficult to for the
citizens to sustain themselves on such little labor, especially in colonies like Maryland and Virginia
that utilized tobacco as a

Crescendos In The Firebird Suite
In both pieces of music, The Firebird Suite, by Igor Stravinsky (1882 1971) and C Jam Blues, by
Duke Ellington, there are traces of dynamics and timbre, also known as tone color, throughout.
Dynamics is defined as degrees of loudness or softness in music, and timbre is defined as quality
of sound that distinguishes one instrument or voice from another. Both pieces have repeated
melodies, but The Firebird Suite shows the use of more crescendos and decrescendo, while C Jam
Blues uses improvisation, which is musiccreated at the same time it is performed. Each piece has
things in common, and at the same time are two completely different compositions of music.
In Stravinsky s The Firebird Suite, there is a varying use of crescendos and decrescendos.

Semiotic Or Semilogical Theory Of Communication
1.INTRODUCTION
Communication serves a variety of purposes and takes on a variety of forms; and is so much more
than merely a transmission of information. Often communication includes ambiguous forms (which
may be either deliberate or spontaneous). How is one to interpret a speaker s utterances and how
is this interpretation done? The Relevance Theory of Sperber and Wilson (1986) to be explored in
this paper proposes an interpretation of utterances based on a theory in pragmatics about how a
hearer interprets a speaker s utterances.
In the past, two models have been put forward to explain how communication is processed. They
are as follows:
1.1.The Code Model
This model (also known as the Shannon Weaver model (1949)) presents... Show more content on

their shared knowledge). There is therefore a certain degree of reliance on the hearer making the
right inferences from what is not explicitly communicated. This may be diagrammatised as follows:
Speaker s thought/intention + context mediated information encoded transmitted decoded + context
mediated information intention/thought understood.
Inference may be understood from the following example: The message Tom has bought the Times
requires contextual knowledge for it to be understood i.e. that the Times is the name of a newspaper
publication. Also, it is to be inferred from the statement that rather than buying the entire press
enterprise, Tom has merely bought one issue, and probably the issue of the day in question.
The Inferential model includes Grice s model of implicature (i.e. what is meant, suggested or hinted
at but not overtly stated). Therefore, in order for communication to be successful, Grice proposed
the Cooperative Principle which includes the maxims of quantity, quality relevance and manner.
The Relevance theory develops the maxim of relevance.
With regards to metaphorical language, there is no sharp dividing line between it and the literal.
The same cognitive processes are involved in understanding all utterances. This distinguishes our
view from the classical (Aristotelian) view of figurative language where figurative utterances

Public Transport And How It Can Be Prioritised Through...
Abstract
This paper addresses the importance of public transport and how it can be prioritised through traffic
engineering. Numerous methods for giving public transport priority have been researched and
discussed. Examples are provided where those techniques are implemented and their performance is
evaluated. Research proves that priority to public transport in urban areas is feasible and can lead
to reduced travel times while having a minor impact on the traffic network.
1.Introduction
As cities are expanding and traffic congestion is increasing, there is growing demand for more
regular and efficient public transport. This is in part to reduce pollution and noise levels (European
Commision Dictorate General for Environment, 2004). European policy makers and investors have
in fact influenced a modal shift towards more public, rather than private transport in recent years
(Bund, n.d.).
Traffic engineering involves the planning and management of urban road infrastructures and
networks (Institute of Transportation Engineers, 1999) for various modes of transport, such as
vehicles (private, public and commercial), bicycles and pedestrians. Its purpose is to find solutions
to transport infrastructures in order to provide the best transport systems for people and goods in
terms of cost, time, safety and environmental impact.
There are three key benefits in prioritising public transport in urban environments. The first is that
by reducing congestion, commercial transport becomes

in a separate file. 1. Predict revenues in 2015. Revenues fell in 2014 because services sales fell
due to key account runoff in ES (Enterprise Services). Assume that revenues grow by 5% in
2015. 111,454,000,000*(1+5%)=117,026,700,000 2. Do products or services have a larger growth
rate of revenues in 2014? Products revenue growth rate:(73,726,000,000 72,398,000,000)
/72,398,000,000=0.018 Services revenue growth rate:(37,327,000,000 39,453,000,000)

What level of accounts receivable would you anticipate for 2015? Calculate the accounts
receivable turnover ratio using the average level of accounts receivable. When you project
accounts receivable assume that it equals revenues divided by the projected accounts receivable
turnover ratio. Projected Accounts receivable equals to projected revenue divided by projected
accounts receivable turnover ratio. The projected turnover ratio stays the same as 2014 and the
projected revenue increases in 2015, so the accounts receivable will increase in 2015. 2014
Accounts receivable turnover ratio: Revenue/Average accounts receivable=111,454,000,000
/(13,832,000,000+15,876,000,000)/2=7.503 2015 Accounts receivable=Projected revenue
/Projected Accounts receivable turnover ratio=117,026,700,000/7.503=15,597,321,000 6.
Calculate Hewlett Packard s fixed asset turnover ratio for 2014. If the same ratio occurs in 2015
does that imply that PPE will increase or decrease in 2015? 2014 Fixed Assets turnover
ratio=Revenues/Average Net PPE=111,454,000,000/(11,340,000,000+11,463,000,000)/2=9.775 It
implies that Net PPE will increase in 2015. Projected Net PPE equals to projected revenue divided
by projected fixed assets turnover ratio. Since the fixed assets turnover ratio has not change and the
projected revenue increases, the net PPE will also increase. 7.Footnote 7 lists Hewlett Packard s

  • 2. Summary Of On Natural Death By Lewis Thomas On Natural Death In his essay On Natural Death , research pathologist, medical doctor, and biologist Lewis Thomas attempts to console the reader about the weighty topic of death by referencing his own observations, citing scientific facts and statistics, and using the universal fear and unknown of eternal rest. Thomas first points to the example of the unforeseen death of an elm tree in his own backyard. The death of an inanimate lifeform is something with which most people are familiar and probably even comfortable. This first hand experience displays a situation in which death is quick and free of pain. It also shows how quickly death can tranpire; in this situation, the tree appeared to be in perfect health just a week before its sudden passing. The story of a dying mouse displays Thomas s own sorrow at the demise of a fellow mammal and former participant in life. The reader is naturally brought to empathize with Thomas s sentiments by his use of firsthand emotions and experiences. Thomas even calls upon the reader to understand the feelings of the mouse itself by describing what the experience likely felt to the mouse painless to the extent that the mouse is inclined to shrug. Another of his observations is that of two soldiers unfortunate fatalities after being in a mortal automobile accident. This example brings the reality of death even closer to the reader, as this time the it is experienced by human beings not unlike the reader. This situation is akin to that ... • 3. The New York Time Article By Timothy William Essay In the New York Time Article by Timothy William, Inquiry to Examine Racial Bias in the San Francisco Police Department, first thing to remember known as implied social perception, implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. Another key point of argument is that there is no systematic bias in the criminal justice base on race. To point out, in performing their policing duties, policeofficer are able to exercise a high degree of discretion. This means that they have a have a broad freedom to make a decision about how to act on the given situation. For this reason some police officer deliberately use their wide power of discretion and their authority to perform acts of misconduct. In this article it is generally agreed that discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin is morally wrong and a violation of the principle of impartiality. In fact impartiality principles requires that those who are equal be treated equally based on similarities, and that race not be a relevant consideration in the assessment. However, in May, District Attorney George Gascon appointed a three judge body of distinguished jurists to look into bias in the department following a series of misconduct scandals, the most troubling being a group of police officers who were caught sending racist text messages. Now, the scope, aim, participants and timeline of the ongoing investigation have been revealed in a series ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Library Interview Analysis Introduction I started the process of seeking an interview about two weeks before the assignment was do. I had email several places and the response was almost the same for them all. They could only meet with me after the assignment was due. I then remember a small library in the city that I reside in and that was the Harrison Township Public Library. The Interview The interview was held Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Harrison Township Public library. I arrived 15 minutes before 11:00 A.M. and did last minute question changes before walking into the library. The library is quite small (perhaps 2000 square feet in total size). I talk to the librarian on staff and she directed me to the main office area that was at one point a storage closest. That was when I meet with the Director of the Harrison Township Public Library, Dan Hutchins. I started off the interview asking him what he was responsible for managing. He was in charge of the hiring, firing, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Things are getting tougher everyday (2017) for librarians and that to make a living as a librarian (which in his eyes is working fulltime) you have to move where the jobs are... and you have to love what you do... He also said that networking is also a very big key that I need to start as soon as possible. Get your name and accomplishments out there and to make contacts (2017) not just for networking (which is important) but for day to day advice. Conclusion Overall, I learned much with my time with the Director of the Harrison Public Library, Dan Hutchins. He was a man on integrity and compassion for his field and gave me important insights on how it could be for me one day as a manager or leader in the librarian field. It s a tough world and this interview move me one step closer to facing it head ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Malcom X And The Civil Rights Of Malcolm X By definition, civil rights are the rights of citizens to political and social equality. To simplify that, civil rights are rights that every person should have, no matter what race, color, ethnicity, etc. Some people believed so strongly that everyone should have civil rights, they were willing to risk their own lives for it. People such as Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Elizabeth Eckford, Ernest Green, Hazel Massery, and many others. One of the many civil rights activists was Malcolm Little, who later changed his name to Malcolm X. Malcolm X was one of the activists who fought back violently. All of these civil rights activists wanted generally the same thing. Dr. King wants the same thing I want. Freedom Malcolm X. Many of them used words, and peaceful protests, many of which were led by Martin Luther King Jr. Malcolm X strongly believed that peace would never solve anything, so he decided to use violence to get his way. Malcolm X was one of the many activists in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Malcolm X, born Malcolm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before his assassination, he had received many death threats by African American Muslims, and on February 14, a week before he got shot, his house was set ablaze, presumably by the same group of people that shot him. Malcolm X is one of the many great leaders that participated in the long and difficult struggle for civil rights. Even today, many of those people are remembered, and thanked, whether they are still alive or not. • 6. Corruption In Canterbury Tales A medieval miller was a worker that would grind grain at the mill to produce flour and meal. In Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, the Miller is a deceitful man that advances in her career through deception and tells a fabliau, a comical fable told in verse that is characterized by sexual obscenity. Fabliaux were generally told by jongleurs, or medieval entertainers. This particular fabliau is a bawdy tale that discusses a scandalous affair. Through the Miller s description as a thieving and scheming peasant and the Miller s raunchy tale, Chaucer criticizes the dangerous precedent of corruption set by the nobilitywhich consequently spreads to all classes due to esteem and success amassed by corruption and the stereotype of the Third Estate or lower class as lewd and having a lack of intelligence. Chaucer s description of the Miller as deceitful and thieving through his appearance and actions criticizes the upper class tendency to underestimate the ability of the lower class. The upper class is so consumed with maintaining their image of affluence and looking down on the lower class, they fail to recognize that peasants can learn to imitate their habits of corruption that lead to immense wealth. The Miller is depicted as a well built, muscular man who wears a whit cote and a blew hood and has a red beard as any sowe or fox that would steal from his customers by selling his grain for three times its worth, yit he hadde a thombe of gold (554,565 566). The purpose of the essay is to discuss what factors can contribute to building cohesive groups. There are many factors which can be useful in developing perfectionism within a group. These factors are as follow: membership and work environment factors, organisational factors and group development and maturity. Meredith Belbin s nine team roles also determine the degree to which cohesiveness is maintained. In order to discuss these factors, this essay will define what a group team is and present two different kinds of groups. Second, some of these factors contributing to success of group work will be described. Next, this essay will also focus on the role of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A team can be successful if the members know each other for a reasonable time. Moreover, they can build trust within such a group and as a result it can help them in building confidence to perform tasks better (Mullins, 2010). Thus the time, individuals skills, and the size of the group are significant aspects in building successful teams. Work environment is another factor which can help build and maintain perfectionism among team members. Nature of the task can contribute to the task and the degree of task difficulty should be moderated because too difficult tasks can cause conflicts, too easy one however boredom. Communication is also very important and tasks should be communicated clearly which can lead to cohesiveness. Technology is another aspect worth considering as the resources available in the workplace can contribute to developing successful teams (Mullins, 2010). Therefore, the manager should organise work according to the sources they have. Organisational factor can also play an important part in maintaining successful teams. Successful team work depends on management and leadership styles. Encouragement and understanding of individual s problems should be maintained. • 8. Reflection On Interpersonal Communication Reflection Paper I have taken Interpersonal Communication before during the summer 2016, but I didn t pass it mainly because I wasn t as focused as I was in this class. Professor Castro just made it fun. Her lectures and her stories made it interesting. Every Mondays and Wednesdays, I had three classes. Interpersonal Communication would be my first class to start my day. Then two classes after that. I ended up dropping those two classes. I was supposed to drop this class too but I didn t because I wanted to learn more. I ve been in a relationship with my girlfriend for almost a year and one of the problems we had was listening. Sometimes she wouldn t listen to me or I just wouldn t listen to her at all. The day we had a lecture about listening in class, that same morning, we got in an argument about how I don t listen to her. I always listen to her but not when we argue. I usually avoid her when we are about to start arguing. I found it funny how the professor somehow knew I was in trouble with listening and she decided to have a lecture on listening. Unlike a history class or a math class or even reading class, this class actually helped me outside of school. I also learned that my professor is a volunteer basically everywhere. She participates in marches whenever she can. Her age doesn t stop her from making the community better and standing up for what she believes in. She is an inspiration. She asked the class to volunteer somewhere for three hours which was pretty cool. I haven t had any class in college where volunteeringout in the community was a requirement. Because I had to volunteer for a grade in class, I am now volunteering for the resist march in Los Angeles, June 11. I wouldn t be going out to volunteer for this event if it weren t for this class. Knowing that my professor goes to protests and marches at her age, she is truly an inspiration. I don t usually have time to go out to marches anymore but seeing that she still does, I d want to participate more in the community. Now only problem I had in this class was that I never really had my own seat. I moved to different seats every time we had class. I felt very comfortable sittingin the back, but the professor doesn t like having students ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the United Arab... There are many social returns that can be gained from the Sougha program. Alleviation of unemployment, women empowerment and the all important role of preserving indigenous Emirati heritage are just examples of the social impact of Sougha. The program is cognizant of the fact that a large population of Emiratis possesses enormous potential for entrepreneurship but is largely unable to achieve employment. Because of the Sougha program, such individuals are able to access assistance, both material and otherwise, which enables them to consequently enhance their entrepreneurial skills and in effect, seize market opportunities (Sougha.com, 2012). There exist numerous differences between the type of social entrepreneurship exhibited by the Khalifa Fund programs, and the general idea of commercial, entrepreneurship. But perhaps the greatest similarity both types of entrepreneurships have is the pursuit of revenue. Both types of entrepreneurship recognize opportunities for business and this precisely when the need to innovate is invoked. However, for social entrepreneurs, the social missing of their innovation takes central part and influences greatly how they perceive business opportunities. In most cases, ethics, integrity and the demonstration of humanity creates a distinct contrast between social and commercial entrepreneurship. In essence, a majority of social entrepreneurs associate their business with communities that are relatively disadvantaged in terms of accessing resources. A key facet of social entrepreneurship employed by the management of the fund is responsible leadership. All four programs started by the Khalifa Fund are without a doubt socially engineered. • 11. A Report On Bmw Z8 To the casual observer, the BMW Z8 looks like a 1960s roadster, its swoopy retro esque lines belying the fact that it first saw light of day in 1999. BMW wanted to create a car to celebrate the turn of the millennium, bringing together its past and future in one design. Therefore the aluminium bodied Z8 draws heavily from Z07 concept car seen only a few years earlier at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, which in turn pays homage to the original BMW 507from the 1950s. The car was met with great excitement by both the motoring press and customers alike, an appearance in the James Bond movie, The World is Not Enough cemented its place as a desirable exotic. Rivals in this retro modern category were thin on the ground, and there were precious few cars to which the Z8 could be compared, especially when looking at its traditional German counterparts. BMW itself had a model range comprising only of the 3, 5 and 7 series with the recently introduced X5 having just dipped an adventurous toe into untapped segments. The 8 series was in its last year and rivals had a similarly modest set of offerings to choose from. You had to move to look at niche manufacturers and up your budget considerably to find any meaningful challengers, the Ferrari 360 and Aston Martin DB7 come to mind and while both have their merits, it is the Z8 that is now worth considerably more than either of those cars in today s market. A majority of the Roman people did not have much time to have fun because they were constantly working and providing for their family. Although when they did have time to relax, Romans enjoyed playing different kind of games and watching different kinds of entertainment. Theater, sports, and chariot racingwere the three main things that Romans did for fun during this particular time period. The equestrian events horse and chariot racing were among the oldest and most well liked activities, in Rome, attending the chariot races became by far the most popular pastime. 250,000 people, perhaps one fourth of the city s population, gathered around the racetrack. In 680 B.C. the first four horse race was held at the Olympic Games. The Greeks after some time added other equestrian events such as the two horse chariot race and the mule cart race. During this time period horse racing was much more dangerous than it was now because of their lack of equipment. Charioteers and riders did not get the recognition that other athletes during this time period received. For it was not the charioteers, or the runners that got the credit, but the owners of the horses. This book is built around courage, many characters help explain Harper Lee s definition of real courage. The ones that really stick out to me are Walter Cunningham, Atticus Finch, and Mrs. Dubose. My first example quote about Walter Cunningham is Reason I can t pass the first grade, Mr. Finch, is I ve had to stay out ever spring an help Papa with the choppin (Lee 32). Mrs. Dubose was a mean old lady, she always had something to say about Scout, Jem and sometimes Atticus. When they were walking by her house one day she made Jem the most mad she had ever been by bad mouthing her Atticus because he was defending Tom Robinson. She said Your father s no better than the niggers and trash he works for (Lee 135). Jem went crazy and got in trouble for ruining Mrs. Dubose s yard with Scout s baton he bought her after she insulted Atticus. • 17. What Is The Use Of Pathos In Columbine And In Cold Blood The literary nonfiction pieces Columbine, written by Dave Cullen, and In Cold Blood, written by Truman Capote, uniquely develop the stories of their killers through the use of rhetorical devices and careful presentation of information. Cullen frequently employs informal diction and teenage slang to connect the reader to the mindsets of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Additionally, Columbine features manipulation of syntax to emphasize significant information while presenting it in a simple and understated manner. On the other hand, Capotecreates pathos while depicting Perry Smith s passive and sentimental nature to make the reader feel sympathetic. Also, In Cold Bloodutilizes imagery to make the reader view Dick Hickock as dangerous and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While describing the murder of the Clutter family, Perry states, And I thought... So I went back upstairs, (277). Truman Capote deliberately includes Perry s feeling that It was like [he] wasn t a part of it. More as though [he] was reading a story, to show the level of dissociation Perry experiences. Even after Smith is found guilty of murder, the reader still feels some sympathy for Perry as Capote hints that Perry cannot be held accountable for his own actions. Just before he is hanged, Smith remarks, It would be meaningless to apologize for what I did. Even inappropriate. But I do. I apologize, (392 393). Pattron uses an inductive format by introducing examples, slowly building to his statement. Pattron begins his opening statement with a question as a hook, What are humans really supposed to eat? (Patton 1). The hook clues the audience into the subject of the article. He then uses evidence stating the observations of nature, The grizzly bear an omnivore is fast and strong jawed, with razor sharp teeth (Pattron 1). By presenting his evidence before his statement, it gives anticipation to his argument. He then introduces his claim, Based on the logic of the animal kingdom, we are designed to eat plants (Patton 1). The author brings up a concession for those with medical histories There are always expectations, of course. In particular, Pattron states The grizzly bear an omnivore is fast and strong jawed, with razor sharp teeth. (Patton 2). Pattron appeals to the sense of sight. By describing the bear, it solidifies the fearful image of the bear s abilities. The author uses irony through the use of sarcasm, Humans are thought to be omnivores just like the grizzly. The phrase comes from the film Rashomon, and it is about a murder and rape case. It also involves the different stories of each witness. Many times, when something happens, people tend to share about the specific event based on what they hear or see. In this case, point of view plays a great role. As far as the Rashomon film itself, there are many cases in society ranging from minor ones to major ones which use the Rashomon effect. For example, the Orenthal James Simpson (OJ) case. The case itself deals with a former football player, O.J. Simpson who is charged with the murder of his ex wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. What I find both interesting and revealing, is the fact that each witness that testifies, describes O.J. s mode in a different way based on their perception of him. On July 10, 1995, the murder trial of O.J. Simpson began with the testimony of his oldest daughter, 26, Arnelle Simpson. Study Area Of East Harbor Methods Study Area East Harbor is a 291 hectare back barrier salt marsh and coastal lagoon that is located within the Cape Cod National Seashore (CCNS), in Truro Massachusetts (Thiet et al. 2014a; Thelen Thiet, 2009). The East Harbor system was artificially isolated from the Cape Cod Bay in 1868 when the original 1000 ft wide inlet was diked due to the construction of a causeway for use by trains and automobiles (Portnoy et al. 2006). In 1894, a drainage system was installed that allowed freshwater to escape the system (Portnoy et al. 2006). However, no sea water could enter the system due to a one way flapper valve and the exclusion of the tides caused the salinity to decline from 25 30 parts per thousand (ppt) into brackish water with a salinity of around 5 ppt (Portnoy, 2013; Smith Medeiros, 2013). The creation of a nearly fresh water system ultimately led to a variety of ecological problems in East Harbor (Smith Medeiros, 2013), and many native estuarine fauna and flora were extirpated (Portnoy, 2013). The tidal restriction caused summertime oxygen stress (Thelen, 2009) and in 2001, an oxygen depletion created a fish kill involving around 40,000 alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) and several hundred white perch (Morone Americana) (Portnoy, 2013). This, along with a multitude of previous water quality related problems prompted restoration efforts to begin (Thelen, 2009). Reflective Essay On Greek Culture My experience attending the Seminar on Greece with Dr. Khosrowshahi was a very interesting, fun and informational way to gain knowledge of the different cultures and history of other parts of the world. I do not have an extensive knowledge of Greek history or culture. I enjoyed learning the different traditions and cultural rituals of the Greek culture. I learned a lot about the historyof Greece and how much the history influences many other cultures throughout the world. The most interesting fact and important impression I took away from the seminar is my Mother s name is Diane , neither my mother or myself knew the Greek history behind her name. I enjoyed how Dr. K used different ways to involve the students at the seminar to become engaged in learning and experiencing Greek culture. I found the drum performance quite exciting and interesting. Also, the young ladies demonstrating their cultural dance skills were very entertaining. After learning more about Greek culture, I found it very interesting how much the alphabet and language influences American English. The part of the seminar I enjoyed most was Dr. K demonstrating his knowledge of Greek music by demonstrating the drum. I enjoyed many other aspects of the seminar as well. I enjoyed the visuals, including the pictures and videos used to provide a visual experience of Greek culture. The Greek culture artifacts and photos from previous trips to Greece was inspiring and exciting to experience as well. Also, student interaction was impressive throughout the entire seminar. There is not anything I disliked about the seminar. The only thing I did not like was having to take off work to attend. This is not anything involving the seminar or the presentation. Furthermore, I am thankful I was able to have the opportunity to take off work to attend this continuing education experience. Prior to this seminar, I was not aware of the extensive history of the Olympic Games. It was interesting to learn the Olympics originated before Christ. Also, the Olympics truly represent the uniting of different cultures, religions and races. This is a very inspirational and motivating experience considering the current division of cultures. Romantic Jealousy s Effect On Self-Esteem Romantic Jealousy s Effect on Self Esteem Evolutionary psychology has presented the theory that romantic jealousy, the feelings of threat or loss to an important emotional relationship, evolved as an adaptation to protect investment relationships (Buss, 1998; 2005). According to evolutionary theory, jealousyserves as an advantage in mate retention and sexual reproduction for those who are able to effectively express such feelings of romantic jealousy (Wade Walsh, 2008). Central to human social patterns, jealousy has been shown to be a universal emotion (Buunk Hupka, 1987). Much of evolutionary theory focuses on sex differences in the experience of romantic jealousy between males and females (Buss, 1992; Sagarin, et al, 2003; Sagarin Guadagno, 2004), while other bodies of research primarily focus on personality traits predisposing individuals to exhibit these jealous feelings (Wade Walsh, 2008). • 39. Comparison of Fellini s Nights of Cabiria and La Dolce Vita Nights of Cabiria and La Dolce Vita left me absolutely stunned, in awe of what I had just witnessed. I found both of these films to be unspeakably beautiful, and in my opinion, the best out of all Fellini s major motion pictures which I have attempted to view this semester. Both films are unmistakably Fellini in the characteristic that define his films, especially through the world of fantasy, and deserve a thorough comparison. In La Dolce Vita, we are given a glimpse of a filmmaker that has moved far neo realist roots. While Nights Of Cabiria was certainly a departure from neo realism, (and far less neo realist than La Strada, which was just one picture before this one) it certainly had many more neo realist elements ... The disgusting lifestyle instead leads to his denial of emotion, his collapse and finally his complete lack of emotional and spiritual hope. Cabiria is eventually able to look beyond the faГ§ade of the rich, while Marcello becomes a victim of his own illusions. It is for this reason that Cabiria can be seen as a stronger character than Marcello. If it can be said that the film follows the emotional, spiritual, and mental growth of Cabiria, it then follows that La Dolce Vita follows the emotional, spiritual, and mental collapse of Marcello. One of the flaws of both Cabiria and Marcello is their desire to succumb to their needs. Cabiria wants so badly to be loved and to have love, and Marcello wants so badly to find truth and happiness in the pleasures of high society that they become blind to reality. As we know from the first scene, Cabiria has a habit of falling in love too quickly. We find how deeply she carries this fantasy when she becomes hypnotized. This blind fantasy has lead to nothing but heartbreak, and it is this realization that leads to her salvation. Marcello also wants to give into his fantasy and desire, seeking redemption through love. In the fountain with Sylvia, he proclaims her to be the ultimate female. His works with human cognition, the basic structure of the psyche, and association experiments are widely known today in the form of the concepts of the introvert and the extrovert, psychological archetypes, and basic tests of word association. Although many basic principles of psychology today are based upon his original discoveries and theories, they were not conceived without external insight. Social, economic, and cultural influences upon Carl Junggreatly affected his lifetime achievements and provided inspiration for many of his theories. Born Carl Gustav Jung II on July 26, 1875, to Emilie Preiswerk and the pastor Paul Jung in Kesswil, Switzerland, he was not without a notable ancestral background. Jung s paternal grandfather, Dr. Med. • 49. Indentured Servitude During Colonial America Essay Indentured Servitude in Colonial America William Gunnell, Jr. travelled with his parents from their home in Great Britain to Virginia sometime before his tenth birthday in 1715. In Virginia, they became indentured servants for a man named Richard Lee. Following his master s death, William s indenture was inherited by Richard s son. William worked for the Lee family for six years as a clerk, running errands and keeping the books. At the age of sixteen, William s contract ended, and he became a free man ( Indentured Servants, n.d., para. 4). This is one of the better examples of indentured servitude in the colonies, since most servants did not live to see the end of their contracts. In the colonies, indentured servitude acted as a kind of contract based slavery in which free people were turned into property for a term of four to seven years, on average. Their owners paid for their food, clothing, and shelter on arrival in the colonies until the servants had completed their contract, upon which they were paid freedom dues which could be anything from tools, land, or even guns ( Indentured Servants, n.d., para. 1). The Beginning of Indentured Servitude Upon coming to the Americas, settlers found quite a bit of land to farm on, but they lacked enough labor to work it. • 51. Semiotic Or Semilogical Theory Of Communication 1.INTRODUCTION Communication serves a variety of purposes and takes on a variety of forms; and is so much more than merely a transmission of information. Often communication includes ambiguous forms (which may be either deliberate or spontaneous). How is one to interpret a speaker s utterances and how is this interpretation done? The Relevance Theory of Sperber and Wilson (1986) to be explored in this paper proposes an interpretation of utterances based on a theory in pragmatics about how a hearer interprets a speaker s utterances. In the past, two models have been put forward to explain how communication is processed. They are as follows: 1.1.The Code Model This model (also known as the Shannon Weaver model (1949)) presents... This may be diagrammatised as follows: Speaker s thought/intention + context mediated information encoded transmitted decoded + context mediated information intention/thought understood. Inference may be understood from the following example: The message Tom has bought the Times requires contextual knowledge for it to be understood i.e. that the Times is the name of a newspaper publication. Also, it is to be inferred from the statement that rather than buying the entire press enterprise, Tom has merely bought one issue, and probably the issue of the day in question. The Inferential model includes Grice s model of implicature (i.e. what is meant, suggested or hinted at but not overtly stated). Therefore, in order for communication to be successful, Grice proposed the Cooperative Principle which includes the maxims of quantity, quality relevance and manner. The Relevance theory develops the maxim of relevance. With regards to metaphorical language, there is no sharp dividing line between it and the literal. The same cognitive processes are involved in understanding all utterances. This distinguishes our view from the classical (Aristotelian) view of figurative language where figurative utterances ... • 52. Public Transport And How It Can Be Prioritised Through... Abstract This paper addresses the importance of public transport and how it can be prioritised through traffic engineering. Numerous methods for giving public transport priority have been researched and discussed. Examples are provided where those techniques are implemented and their performance is evaluated. Research proves that priority to public transport in urban areas is feasible and can lead to reduced travel times while having a minor impact on the traffic network. 1.Introduction As cities are expanding and traffic congestion is increasing, there is growing demand for more regular and efficient public transport. This is in part to reduce pollution and noise levels (European Commision Dictorate General for Environment, 2004). European policy makers and investors have in fact influenced a modal shift towards more public, rather than private transport in recent years (Bund, n.d.). Traffic engineering involves the planning and management of urban road infrastructures and networks (Institute of Transportation Engineers, 1999) for various modes of transport, such as vehicles (private, public and commercial), bicycles and pedestrians. Its purpose is to find solutions to transport infrastructures in order to provide the best transport systems for people and goods in terms of cost, time, safety and environmental impact. There are three key benefits in prioritising public transport in urban environments. The first is that by reducing congestion, commercial transport becomes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
