warrior. People have many assumptions as to what warrior s expectations were back in the Anglo
Saxon Era. Warriors did whatever it took to finish their duty. In the poems, The Seafarer, The
Wanderer, and Beowulf, warriors were big parts of the stories. Learning about what their
expectations included was very helpful in determining the kind of people they were. Warriors in

All over the news we hear of incidents where there is violence paired with guns. Granted there
are the instances that violence is not coordinated with guns but we do now hear about that as
often. A focus that I have taken as a criminal justice major at Bluffton is looking at school

For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon is a third person tribute to the British men killed in action.
Written following the Battles of Mons and Marne, the first heavy fighting of the war by the
British, this poem deals largely with the finality of death for the men who fought at these battles
who no longer will enjoy friends and will never grow old as their surviving comrades do and
those who did not fight do. It describes soldiers as sons of England and recognizes their sacrifices

In the poem Behind Grandma s House , Gary Soto writes about an experience he had as a young
boy. He speaks of himself as being a nerdy Spanish boy who wants attention. He screams out for
attention by acting out in negative ways. Most know, to bring attention to one s self, one can
acquire it by acting negatively or positively, but negative attention brings punishment. Soto
obtains his grandmothers attention at the end of the poem, but he may have regretted it. Gary
Soto s Behind Grandma s House is a 1952 free verse poem that uses imagery to suggest the

In the society that we reside in today our voice is a source of power and our words allow us to
have a say in our lives especially for the female population. Many years ago a woman s voice was
to be kept at a whisper if even heard at all. We had no opinion on who we wanted to be or on how
the world saw us. We were simply women who took care of the children, cooked, cleaned, and
catered to the men of our home. But we broke out of that silence and women created a name for
themselves, Independent. We could do anything a man could do and maybe even better and we
have now lived in that freedom for many years. But author of the novel, The Handmaid s Tale,
Margaret Atwood pulled her readers attention showing them a world in which the woman s
voice was again taken away. Atwood revealed how powerful the voice is. In this novel women
no longer have a say in what happens to them or their bodies. They were forced to bare the
