During Marie s time, the atom was thought to be the smallest particle in existence. At first, Marie
and Pierre Curie believed that perhaps the atom was covered with cosmic rays. Marie tested
numerous elements to find if other ones than Uranium would make the air conduct electricity better.
Pierre was so interested in Marie s work, that he joined forces with her. Her research had revealed
that two uranium ores, pitchblende and chalcolite were much more radioactive that pure uranium.
Marie concluded that the highly radioactive nature of these ores may possibly be due to
undiscovered elements.
In July of 1898, Marie and Pierre Cure discovered Polonium. They named the element after Marie s
birth country, Poland. Chemically, this new element was very similar to bismuth, but it contained
radioactivity, so it must be new. In December of 1898, the Curie s discovered yet another element.
They named this one radium, from the Latin word for ray. The two new elements had completely

In John 1:29 (New International Version), He is known as The Lamb of God , and many other
passages in the Bible. One of the things the author of this poem wants people to know is that
lambs are sweet and gentle. By saying that, he is also stating that God is sweet and gentle as well.
In the first stanza, the speaker asks who the lamb s creator is; however, the answer is not told
until the end of the poem. Here is where one would find a physical description of the lamb, which
is seen as a pure and gentle creature. In the second stanza, however, the lamb is compared with
baby Jesus, as well as between the lamb and the speaker s soul. In the last two lines of the poem,
the speaker identifies the creator as God. It seems that Blake asks who made thee in one of his
other poems, which is known as a companion to The Lamb, and it is called The Tiger. Blake likes
to question who could be responsible for these creations.
The speaker of the poem makes a direct reference to Jesus from the Bible in line seventeen. The

When I first saw the title, Ballad of Birmingham I thought that this poem is going to be about the
city of Birmingham and how beautiful it is. Then I saw what was beneath the title which said, On
the bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama, 1963. I now know that the poem is going to be
about a bombing, something I know but the characters don t. That sentence also tells me it takes
place in 1963 which is around the time of the civil rights movement.
The poem is about a girl who wants to go downtown and march for freedom but his mother would
not let her because she fears her daughter will get hurt. The mother sends the girl to church thinking

In this poem there is a lot of figurative language. One of the biggest types of figurative language
used in this poem is irony. The irony in this poem is how the mother wouldn t let her child go to

Another piece of figurative language that is very effective in this poem is imagery. The way the
poem is written helps me create images in my head for example, She raced through the streets of

and hyperboles in this poem also help with the imagery, for example, ...night dark hair, and ...rose

cleansing and in that cleansing, thousands of women were raped and killed by Serb military

Ratko Mladic. The purpose of this documentary is to tell the stories of those who suffered during
the war and lived to tell their story and get justice for the heinous acts committed against them. I

One thing I liked about this documentary was that it followed the stories of the women in the
Balkans and also had a male giving his story, which was interesting since the documentary was
about the torture of women. I think this added to the objectivity of the documentary because it
showed that they were getting the story from both males and females, since ethnic cleansing
happened to everyone. This documentary seems to point to the idea that the Serb men thought they
were superior to women, and they thought it was perfectly justified to rape the women, when in
fact, they are not superior to men in any way and the women did not deserve this treatment. One
interesting part of the trial in the documentary was that, when the wartime general was put on the
stand, he claimed that he unwillingly raped a woman because she was hinting at it herself, rather
than him advancing towards her. The lawyer questioned him, however, and was able to get the real
story out, but he still attempted to turn this on to the women. This disgusted me because in a court
where women are standing up for their rights against a man who is known to be guilty, he had the
courage to even try and blame the woman, who he took from her home, killed her family, and

film. It came to the forefront of film theory in the 1930s and 40s through the Italian neorealism
