A (Re) examination of Black Mother/Daughter Relationships in Drenched in Light ,
in Comparison to Girl Through a Womanist Theoretical Lens Mother daughter
dynamics take different forms, the mother may be bold, and outspoken, while the
daughter can take on the role of being meek and obedient due to the mothers
overbearing personality. However, in some mother/daughter relationships roles can be
switched where the daughter is outspoken, and the mother is more reserved. Short
stories such as, Girl by Jamaica Kincaid, and Drench in Light, by Alice Walk are
examples of these two dynamics. Both short stories share similar themes of mother
/daughter relationships. The purpose of this essay is to make a parallel comparison
between Girl, and Drenched in Light to determine which character is Womanist
regarding identity, image in society, and purpose.
Alice Walker compares Womanism to a Feminism by saying Womanist is to
Feminist as purple is to lavender . Walker is defining Womanism as a womanthat is
confident, bold, and outspoken in who she is. The lavender and purple reference that
Walker uses creates the focus of the Womanist theory, which is Africa American
women. The Womanist theory could be exemplified in Drenched in Light, and Girl,
because of the themes revolving around mother/daughter relationships in the black
community. The reader can infer which character is closely related to the Womanist
theory based on their tone and traits shown in the story.
Drenched in Light by Alice Walker was written in 1924 as tribute to the Harlem
Renaissance. What makes the story unique is that it is told from a child s
perspective, who is named, Isis. When Drenched in Light was written, white
people viewed black children as savages, Isis was profiled as one of these children.
Isis was raised by her grandmother, who was conservative and strict when
disciplining Isis. Due to her grandmother s strict discipline Isis would always seek
ways to rebel. Isis had a curious and adventures mind in addition to finding her
identity as a child. If a child is curious about who they are, they will act curious and
explore the unknown. Isis was also very happy and had an optimistic outlook about

It has to be more than trifling. It was confirmed in Chan Fook [1994] that it
includes psychological injury which amounts to a recognised clinical condition and

Anaylsis of a Dinner and Production
Because there was no program or playbill to accompany this production, there was
no way to know the names of the actors or actresses. The best character within the
show was Sheriff Dooley Neal. Neal was a young man who had been brought into
the city by Mayor Timothy O Reilly, a corrupt politician who is willing to acquire
money by any means necessary. Neal believed that he was getting the job of his
lifetime, until O Reilly puts him in the middle of a feud between two singing and
dancing families: the Hatfield s and the McCoy s. Throughout the production, he
was constantly being tricked into being in the middle of the feud and getting in
trouble for things that were not necessarily his fault. There were a few malfunctions
with the props during the production, however. For example, there was a scene in
which Neal had to shoot his gun and break a window in a barn. He made the
shooting motion, but the sound of the shot had not appeared until about one minute
had passed. He and the Mayor, the only other person in the scene, had burst out in
laughter but improvised the entire scene. Their laughter made it clear that it was not
supposed to happen like that, but they attempted to play it off in such a way that it
seemed like it was a perfectly normal mishap. Minutes later, they regained their

building is very important, as it provides stability and balance to the entire
structure. Women are to society what foundations are to buildings. As essential as
the roles women play may be, it does not come close enough to men. Women work
endlessly in the background to keep the system alive, however, men are considered
the leading force. This social structure has been the norm for generations and dates
back as far as the 19th century. Southern women in this time period were resigned
to be wives and mothers. There was no other option for them, as they had to
comply and go with societal norms. Faulkner was of the belief, like the south, that
