The Danger of Using Literature and Fiction as a Historical...
Literature and fiction can be dangerous to use alone as a historical source. However, in looking at
it with an analytical and open mind and incorporating it with textbooks, readers can gain
tremendous knowledge from literature. Looking at the portrayal of a topic by an author is
important. All authors write with specific audiences in mind, and with an intention or point.
Understanding the point that authors strive to convey can reveal a great deal about opinions and
perspectives of the time period. Literature is absolutely essential to world history. The insights in
fiction go far beyond that of textbook learning. Genderroles, the role of the court, and romances are
effectively portrayed in fiction, and convey insights that are different from those in a textbook.
The role of males in Aristocratic Japan and Italy was far superior to women. Both Heian Japan
and Renaissance Italy accepted a sexual double standard. For example, extra marital affairs were
normal for men. They were even openly discussed. In Italy, though men could only have one wife
at a time, there were high death rates, so many people married more than once in their lives.
Wealthy Japanese men most commonly had concubines. Although Christianity in Italy had
prohibited concubines, wealthy men did have mistresses, who did not have any legal standing.
Heian Japan believed that the first wife was most important, but polygamy was still popular and
accepted. Unlike the exploitive lives of wealthy Japanese and

Cyber Criminals And The National Security
In these days, internet is more important than ever, and therefore, having security plans will, at
least, make things challengeable for hackers. Dinicu (2014) claims that cyber criminals threats to
the national security are the most dangerous and most recent ones. Also, she writes, hackers main
focus is more on democratic countries and multinational organizations than the non democratic
countries (Dincu 2014). Fifty years ago, we would not have to worry about internet security
because we would not have so much money and privacy depending on internet. But nowadays, our
communication, money, traveling, etc. can be affected by one or more cyber criminals. We work
and our money comes to us using direct deposit; we call our loved ones... Show more content on

Therefore, it is crucial to learn about the methods that hackers use to steal information. By learning
about hacking, we can help ourselves and others to stay safe while using the internet. One of the
ways in which hackers steal information from people is physically. In physical hacking, hackers
are usually trusted by their victims or have some sort of relationship with them. One example is
getting papers that show PII (Personal Identifiable Information) from the garbage cans. According
to Arlistch and Edelman (2014), one of the easiest hacking methods is physical hacking. They
claim that physical hacking are usually more successful because they are quicker and hackers
sometimes find the information they want stored in thumb drives and old devices. The information
hackers find sometimes helps them to access victims accounts, and they get more information by
finding important data about their victims. In addition to papers, hackers are really interested in
thumb drives, old cell phones, and anything that can store information. We may think that we can
delete our files from a thumb drive and it is safe to let someone to barrow it or get it after clear the
thumb drive and format it, but it is not. In fact, hackers can get many files from the devices and
thumb drives that have been formatted multiple times using recovery software programs.
In some other cases, hackers have direct access to the

Benefits Of Early Childhood Education Essay

Benefits of Early Childhood Education The earlier you enrich a child s life with an education, the
greater the outcome will be in the future. Parents are the first teachers of young children. Children
acquire their knowledge and actions from observing their parents. That is how their minds develop
and how they obtain certain skills. They learn the basis of reading and writing skills at young ages.
Having an early education helps later down the road with saving money. Early Childhood
Education leads to social and emotional development, increased literacy, and fiscal savings. The
first outcome of early childhood Education is social and emotional development. The key to a
critical foundation for lifelong learning and development is positive social and emotional
development (Social Emotional Development). Social and emotional development helps to
navigate young children in supportive relationships with other young children (Social Emotional ...

Having a high education is one of the largest factors for saving money and helping the economy.
Children with a higher literacy rate pay fewer taxes, earn more money, and are less susceptible
to commit a crime (Calman and Tarr Whelan 2). Having children with a good background in
school helps the economy. These children are more likely to get jobs, work efficiently, and buy
things (Calman and Tarr Whelan 2). By being educated you save money and with that money they
are able to buy things they want, which boost the economy. Children that have an early education
save time and money by not needing extra or special classes that can be costly (Calman and Tarr
Whelan 4). Inadequate education in young children leads to excessive spending that is not
necessary or is unsuccessful (Trostel 1). Not only does an early education give development and
literacy skills, it also helps you save money down the

Critical analysis of Disability by Nancy Mairs
Priscilla Farah
May 11, 2012 Author of disability Nancy Mairs who s a feminist and a cripple, has accomplished a
lot in writing and teaching. Her remarkable personality shows in many of her essays especially in
Disability which was first published in 1987 in the New York Times. In this essay, Nancy Mairs
shows how disabled people are constantly excluded, especially from the media. By giving out facts
and including her personal experiences, Mairs aims for making some changes regarding the
relationship between the media and people with disabilities. Mairs thesis is shown implicitly in the
first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nancy Mairs starts Disability with self revelations which show through her entire essay, like for
instance: I am a forty three year old woman crippled with multiple sclerosis... ; take it from me...
; I m the advertisers dream... The fact that Nancy Mairs mentions herself a lot makes her essay
lack objectivity. But the reason behind this is that few are the people who can relate to this
topic. So no one really knows what this is about as much as Mairs and all disabled people who
form a minority do. This tells us that the author knows what she s talking about. Since this essay
is addressed to people who don t know much about disability, its purpose is not merely to inform
us about the physical disability itself but also about the psychological effects of the constant
isolation and exclusion of people with disabilities. This makes the essay persuasive rather than
argumentative since the author only mentioned her attitude towards this subject. But what a
better way to do it than having a person with disability talk about his/her personal experiences?
Persuading people of Mairs point of view which is that disabled people should be included in the
daily activities couldn t be done by just stating objective facts. This kind of persuasion needs
examples. To prove that disabled people are unfairly treated, Nancy Mairs gives an example of a
crippled women who was stopped from doing what she wanted to do, though she was still
physically able to do

Netflix Is The Worlds Leading Internet Television Network
Netflix is a movie business that s offers a variety of ways for customers to view movies. The
company offers traditional DVD rental by mail and instant streaming on Netflix ready devices
that could be hooked up to one s TV. Netflix uses a subscription based model, that allows
customers to utilize their services through a per month fee rather than a pay as you go rate.
Although the company used to offer a combined subscription rate for DVD rentals and online
streaming together, in 2011 Netflix divided these features into the two packages. It is $7.99 for the
basic online streaming package and $7.99 for the DVD rental by mail package. If a customer wants

They have done so by creating mutually beneficial relationships with a number of entertainment
video providers. Their second main strategy is focused on product differentiation. Not only how
customers obtain the content and use it, but also what customers choose what to watch. Netflix s
leading competitive advantage lies within their unique software. The software takes what a
customer has watched or rated and based upon that information builds a list of suggested titles
similar to ones they have just watched. While other companies like Blockbuster has transitioned
into the rent by mail niche category that Netflix had started, no other company has customer
profiling software quite like Netflix. It is continuously updating their smart selection technology to
keep up with customer needs. Over the past few years the film rental market underwent a major
shift. The in store rental market plummeted by nearly $2 million, while vending machine rentals
increased by about ten times the amount and by mail rentals nearly doubled. However, Video On
Demand (VOD) services obtained through cable, digital, and subscription also saw even larger
increases. All of these changes meant companies like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video had to
either restructure and make a complete business model shift or face bankruptcy. Meanwhile, the
increases for by mail rentals and VOD subscription, both of which services

Character Analysis Of Hannibal Lecter
What makes a villain a villain? Is it the senseless violence inflicted upon the innocent? Or is it
the oh so tragic backstory that is dramatically revealed just when the audience was really starting
to hate them? Or is it when they...you know...eat people? When is it too much? When does a
villain become a villain? Is it not all just based on our society s views on what is right and what
is wrong? After binging Hannibal, this is pretty much all I could think for several days. One
moment you re hoping that whoever this cannibalistic serial killer is, gets caught and put away for
a long, long time and then the next moment, you ve fallen in love with him. It s really quite a
rollercoaster. This show raises a lot of questions about morality, it... Show more content on

Hannibal makes the romance between Will and Hannibal very tasteful and realistic. Their
feelings for the other grow slowly, there is not one point when you can definitively say that this
is when their feelings begin. It is just an easy, natural progression of their relationship. I admit
that the romantic undertones of Hannibal and Will s interactions were what initially led me to
watch the show, but I ultimately fell for the masterful writing that Bryan Fuller, the creator,
created with Mads Mikkelsen. The NBC revival of Hannibal shows Dr. Hannibal Lecter before
Silence of the Lambs, before his imprisonment. It follows Will Graham, a gifted FBI profiler
with the ability to see into the mind of anyone he chooses. This ability takes a great toll on Will s
mental stability and because of this, he is forced to take on a psychiatrist, Hannibal Lecter (Mads
Mikkelsen). Hannibal s initial goal is to manipulate the FBI from within but he unexpectedly
finds himself captivated by Will. Due to Will s instability, it is easy for Hannibal to push the
bounds of Will s mind in order to make him realize his true, beautiful potential...as a killer (
Hannibal (TV series) ).
The NBC reincarnation of Hannibal deliberately paints a very human monster. In an interview with
a UK magazine, Digital Spy, Mikkelsen says about Hannibal, He s something else. There is no
diagnosis on him. This is a specific character we will never see again . For many of

How Does Amanda Wingfield Present A Picture Of A...
The Glass Menagerie is a dramatic play which was written by Tennessee Williams that depicts a
picture of a dysfunctional family. These characters are Amanda Wingfield, the mother of Tom and
Laura, and Jim O Connor, the gentleman caller and a friend of Tom. In this play, Amanda
Wingfield was abandoned by her husband, who happens to leave her and the family. At this point,
Amanda s responsibility was to take care of the family and also see to it that her high expectations
for her children was fulfilled. This play brings out some issues of life especially marriage, which
affected the life of Laura and her mother. For this reason, Amanda had to find someone with
certain qualities to marry her daughter. Some of these qualities were a man who does not drink, a
man with a better job or pursuing a good career, and a man with good character.
First of all, a man who does not drink was one of the qualities Amanda expected of the husband or

What Are The Consequences Of The Jim Crow
Separate is NOT Equal: The Effects of Jim Crow Laws
The Jim Crow laws from the 1930s were about power. Power of one race over another. These laws
really highlight the flaws and weakness of human nature. Although the Jim Crow Laws from the
1930s and the various laws presented today have some of the same impacts, there are still many
differences between the two on black rights. The Jim Crow Laws were a system of laws and
regulations that African Americans were forced to follow between 1877 and the mid 1960s. The
laws were to keep black people separate but equal from white people. This enforced racial
segregation and discrimination towards black people. Later in the 20th century, the Jim Crow
laws were considered a violation of civil rights and therefore unconstitutional . The laws are
named after a nineteenth century minstrel character called Jim Crow, the last name being a
reference to a black bird. Thus, a law having to do with blacks was known as a Jim Crow law. The
name Jim Crow on the other hand comes from a minstrel character which was played by the
white actor who went by the stage name Daddy Rice . Daddy Rice wore blackface make up and put
on a show filled with music, singing, and jokes which all degraded black people. The white
audiences loved these performances, therefore, making them very popular. Harper Lee, the author
of To Kill a Mockingbird, published the book in 1959, only a few years before the Jim Crow laws
officially ended. Many people

The first Jamaican sculptor to be known internationally was Kapo, the famous Pukumina leader,
whose works were all composed under religious inspiration (Barrett, 186). The birth of
Rastafarianism created an important outlet for African rooted artistic creativity, and the Rastafarian
artists became the first ones to appear from a grassroots community. This incredible outburst of
creativity is described by Barrett as follows: from the primitive paintings of Ras Dizzy to the
superb etchings of Ras Daniel Heartman; from the rough sculpture of Ras Canute who works
under the coconut tree in front of the Casa Montego in Montego Bay to the refined pieces in Joe
James Gallery in front of the Holiday Inn at Rose Hall, St. James Rastafarian and Rastafarian
inspired art can be found everywhere. (Barrett, 186).
During the 1960 s, there was a rise in political awareness of the Rastafarians, along with an effort
to aid them in the routinization of their movement with the rest of Jamaican society. This effort
was instigated by the present Prime Minister, Edward Seaga, who was a noted anthropologist and
sociologist. One of the results of this awareness was the participation of Rastafarians in the
Jamaica National Festivals; in which many Rastas received medals for exceptional pieces of wood
work (Barrett, 161). An example of a Rastafarian

Lily, though growing up with a no doubt racist father, also grew up with Rosalind as her foster

was asked by a white woman You re staying in her house? and instead of making up an excuse

white girl in a house that was run by african american women. I think that this is an admirable trait
considering her upbringing with her father and what she got taught in school in the 1960 s. Which
was likely non favourable towards african american people. Nowadays though we like to think that
things have changed, and although african americans now have the right to vote and marry who

Acid Base Balance Case Study
Maintenance of acid and based balance in the body is essential for normal function of biological
processes, mainly because of the dependence of pH level for enzyme function. The body
concentration of acids and bases is controlled so that the pH of extracellular body fluids is
maintained within the range of 7.35 to 7.45. The body maintain this balance by a mechanism that
generate buffer and eliminate acids and bases. A baseis an ion or molecule that can accept or
combine with a hydrogen ion and an acidis a molecule that can release a hydrogen. (Grossman,
Port, 2014). Acids and bases exist as a buffer system. For example, a mixture of a weak acid can
reversibly become base or a mixture of a weak base can reversibly become acid. There are two type
of acid base imbalance; metabolic and respiratory.
Metabolic imbalance is a disorder that produce an alteration in the plasma bicarbonate
concentration from the addition to or the loss from the extracellular fluid of nonvolatile acid or
alkali. A reduction in pH because of a decrease in bicarbonate is called metabolic alkalosis.
Respiratory imbalance involves an alteration in partial pressure of carbon dioxide due to an increase
or decrease in alveolar ventilation. Respiratory acidosis is the result of a decrease in pH, ... Show

Taking a Look at Polyester Fiber
2.2 Polyester Fiber
2.2.1 Background and General Properties of Polyester Fiber
Polyesters are those fibers containing at least 85% of a polymeric ester of a substituted aromatic
carboxylic acid including but not restricted to terephthalic acid and f hydroxybenzoic acid. The
major polyester in the market is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), an ester formed by step growth
polymerization of terephthalic acid and the diol ethylene glycol. The polyester fibers all have
similar properties, are highly resilient and resistant to wrinkling, possess high durabilily and
dimensional stability, and are resistant to chemical and environmental attack(Needles, 1986). In
1996, 24.1 million metric tons of manmade fibres were produced globally. The main volume
gain took place in production of PET fibres (PET filament 9%, PET staple 4%) (Froehlich,
1997). Dramatic growth in PET fibre production is foreseen in Asia in the near future (Harris,
1996). The cost of polyester, with the combination of its superior strength and resilience, is
lower than that of rayon. Polyester fibres are hydrophobic which is suitable for lightweight
facing fabrics used in disposable industry providing a perceptible dry feel on the facing, even
when the inner absorbent media is fully saturated. As the new methods of PET processing and

Obesity causes impairment, has characteristic signs and symptoms, and increases harm and

Obesity, like other countless disease, can decrease a person s life expectancy and cause death.
According to Science Daily, moderate obesity reduces life expectancy by about 3 years and
severe obesity can shorten a person s life by 10 years. Together, overweight and obesity are the
second leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Obesity is a contributing factor of
many medical problems including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer.
All of these health conditions can cause death on their own, but increase the risk when they are

Lyrical Analysis Of I Walk The Line
Jerrod Betts
Lyrics Popular Song
Paper #1 Lyrical Analysis I Walk the Line
Recorded on April 2, 1956, Johnny Cash s first hit, I Walk the Line, features lyrics in which Cash
wrote to explain his devotion to his first wife, Vivian Liberto. At least, that was the original
intent. Vivian later divorced Cash due to his use of drugs and affairs he had with other women.
With the separation, and the lack of faithfulness to both his wife and to the lyrics of this tune, the
lyrics obviously do not hold up in Johnny s case, however the song still serves to explain one s
unwavering love for another (Turner). Songs have for many years used love as a central theme.
From that aspect, I Walk the Line, is pretty standard. In fact, the love ... Show more content on

It is especially important to pay attention to the first two lines in each verse, as they reveal the
most in terms of the lyrical meaning behind the song. The song begins with the lines I keep a
close watch on this heart of mine, I keep my eyes wide open all the time. The key theme in these
lines is the idea of Johnny Cash keeping his sights on what is important, his new wife. He is
keeping a close watch on his heart as if to ensure it does not give into desires and go astray. This
key theme of devotion is continued throughout the rest of the song, as can be constantly seen in
each beginning lines in each verse (Cash). I find it very, very easy to be true, I find myself alone
when each day is through. These lines in the second verse again reiterate the idea of devotion.
They even further the idea by saying how Cash finds himself alone at night when he touring, and
not with another. Staying true to ones lover means not going awry, and not cheating on this. So
Cash uses this for a lyric in this stanza, and adds in that he himself finds doing so to be very, very
easy. This of course will prove to be ironic later in his career (Cash). The third verse begins with
the following lines: As sure as night is dark and day is light, I keep you on my mind both day and
night (Cash). In most circumstances, nighttime is dark, and daytime is light. So the first

Vegetarians and people who do not consume red meat are more apt to be iron deficient.
Meat sources of iron, also called heme iron, such pork, beef and lamb are among the richest sources
of iron. Heme sources of iron are best absorbed and utilized by the body.
Non heme sources such as the iron in beans, grains and vegetables is not nearly as well absorbed
by the body. Absorption: The capacity of the body to absorb iron from the diet is a crucial factor
for developing iron stores and maintaining functional iron. When the body has trouble absorbing
iron from foods or when iron is lost through cellular break down, iron deficiency anemia is likely
to occur. When the above mechanisms are overwhelmed by the increasing magnitude of the
anemia, or when the demands of physical activity or intercurrent illness overwhelm them, a
clinical disease state becomes apparent to the physician and to the patient. The severity of
clinical symptoms bears less relationship to the severity of the anemia than to the length of time
over which the condition develops. An acute hemorrhagic condition may produce symptoms with
loss of as little as 20% of the total blood volume (or 20% of the total red cell mass). Conversely,
anemias developing over periods long enough to allow compensatory mechanisms to operate will
allow much greater loss of rbc mass before producing symptoms. It is not terribly uncommon to see
a patient with a hemoglobin of 4

BED BATH BEYOND
Suggested Study Questions
1. How would you characterize the business risk of Bed Bath Beyond? Review their financial
performance. Business risk in the case of BBBY is low if you only consider that the products
they sell are produced by name brand companies, so any products needing repair could be sent
directly to the name brand company. By passing BBBY and that BBBY has no control over the
quality of the products they sell and that there are no significant switching costs. However, their
degree of operating advantage is high which would indicate high business risk. If management adds
fixed operating costs to their business operations, without an increase in sales, the firm s profit

total asset ratio is 34.69% while BBBY debt to total asset ratio is at 44% ($1,270,000/$2,865,023).
Increasing to this capital structure would also reduce shareholders earnings per share.

Cicero s First Catilinarian Oration Essay
Cicero s First Catilinarian Oration: A Rhetorical and Literary Analysis
The pen is mightier than the sword. As a youth, I disagreed with this statement. How could a pen
ever defeat a sword? Over time, I have come to understand how words and speech can influence
generations more than just fear or force. Cicero s speeches are prime examples of how rhetoric is
more powerful than military prowess or use of arms. His rhetoric influenced public policy and
successive generations. Unlike Caesar and Pompey, he had no significant military command yet;
his reputation was just as strong. Cicero s general objectives in the First Catilinarian Oration
were to portray Catiline as a traitor, achieve support for an action against Catiline, and protect
himself from any repercussions. To demonstrate this rhetoric I will analyze sections 3 and 4 from
his First Catilinarian Oration. I have choses these sections because they best show how Cicero
uses rhetoric to achieve his objective. In order to classify and understand Cicero s rhetoric, first I
will define the kinds of speech and parts of rhetoric. Second, I will analyze his rhetoric by
commenting on his chosen rhetorical techniques and topics.
According to Aristotle, there are three kinds of speech: deliberative oratory, forensic oratory, and
epideictic oratory. Cicero s First Catilinarian Oration falls mainly under the deliberative oratory
category but, has elements of forensic and epideictic oratory. Deliberative oratory is any rhetoric

This paper explores the dynamics of gender wage discrimination in Pakistan for two data sets;

The signs of education are expected. For the data set of 2008/09, signs for education are positive
which does not support theory. Even after efforts to remove multi colinearity, they still show
positive signs. Most of the variables in the regression are also insignificant.
However, when we take the data for LFS 2010/11, and correct it for selectivity bias, we get much
better results. Most of the variables are significant as well as show the correct signs. (The same
algorithm was applied to both the data sets, and the same variables have been taken).
Results of Logit models for correcting selectivity bias are attached in Appendix A.
Variables Used Characteristics of Workers Summary tables from LFS 2010/11 1. Age * Theory

Pros And Cons Of Support For The Federal Reserve Act

Morgan are the reason we re not still in a panic now (Strouse 6). Still, with the economy as it is
currently, the next panic is not that far away and it could be worse. The only way to stabilize the
economy and prevent any further economic failure is to pass President Wilson s new bill. Sign my

The Patient Protection and Affordable care Act after being implemented change the major format
of how healthcare was provided and acquired to individuals. It changed many areas that have been

Americans become insured. For America, this was the first giant leap in a long time to try to fix

Odessa wasn t even integrated until the early 1980s. Even after it was integrated, the district

there were only six black players on the team. Of those six, five of them started and one of them

Even so, most coaches still considered them a lower class. Even Nate Hearne, a black coach that
usually dealt with the black players, described Boobie as just another dumb nigger if he couldn t

quarterfinals, a meeting had to be set up to discuss the terms of the game. This was mostly due to
racism since over 90% of the Carter school was African American. The Permian coaches argued

Social Expectations In To Kill A Mockingbird
A society will often dictate what is expected of citizens through the unspoken social expectations of
the community. These expectations set by society often lead to inequalities, in terms of power and
inclusion, which can be seen through Maycomb s court system and Atticus s statements of
Maycomb s social expectations. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the conflict
between social expectations and inclusion in society stems from the racism and sexism found in the
community of Maycomb. This demonstrates that to achieve equality in a community, social
expectations that are set by the public cannot limit or restrain a specific set of people in terms of
power or inclusion in society.
In Maycomb s society, the social expectation of white men having more power than black men
illustrates the inequality the community faced when racism is added to social expectations.
While Atticus is talking to Jem about how the court system works, he states, In our courts, when
it s a white man s word against a black man s, the white man always wins (Lee 223). Atticus s
statement reveals that social expectations are related to racism because it causes an inequality in
power between black and white civilians. Based on the color of one s skin, it would determine the
amount of power they would have in society. This tells readers that to achieve equality in a
community, it is necessary for everyone, regardless of race, to have equal power in terms of voices
and opinions so that all

To Kill A Mockingbird Rhetorical Analysis
Prose appeals to ethos in this essay by appealing to the reader as a mother, educator, and student.
By writing from the perspective of both a student and educator, Prose shows how both are
affected by assigned literature. By discussing her own two sons, she appeals to readers who are
mothers by expressing her concern about their education. Prose starts out with such strong
language to set the tone of the essay and to establish her stance. She does risk putting of readers
who disagree with her by immediately talking from a purely emotional point rather than
introducing a logical argument. Readers may take offense with the writing she speaks poorly
of; for example, as a reader, I personally disagreed with many of her early statements, particularly
her negative, simplistic view of To Kill A Mockingbird, which she writes is, ...a chance to
consider thorny issues of race and prejudice from a safe distance and with comfortable
certainty...dubious literary merit... (Prose 3). Her highly emotional critique of the novel is one
of the many example when Prose risks irking or downright irritating her readers. Prose assumes
that most high school students do not read on their own and that students do not enjoy the
literature they read in school; she also assumes that many students stop reading in their adult life
and that what books students read in high school affect them for the rest of their lives. Prose
appeals to logos by citing reading lists, surveys, novels, and plays. She also constructs her
argument well, following a clear path. Her personal narratives about her experience with King
Lear and the effect Wuthering Heights had on her son also help in the structure and flow of her
argument. As a person who has read quite a few of the plays and novels Prose cites, my opinion
of the article was greatly affected by what I had already read. She assumes her audience is well
read and, at the minimum, knows of the books she references. The audience that has not read
her novel helps her build her case; they do not have a bias either way and will probably tend to trust
her, whereas a reader who has read the book will have already developed their own opinion of the
novel and will be able to determine their stance from there.

Mill vs. Bentham
In what ways did John Stuart Mill s version of utilitarianism differ from that of Jeremy Bentham?
Which do you consider preferable?
The Cambridge International Dictionary of English defines utilitarianism as the system of thought
which states that the best action or decision in a particular situation is the one which most benefits
the most people . This is the main idea of the system of thought and it is from this the beliefs and
opinions of John Stuart Mill (1806 1873), Jeremy Bentham (1748 1832) and other early utilitarians

Bentham founded a group of intellectual philosophers called the В‘Philosophical Radicals , or

History of the Obelisk
The design of the Washington Monument is a common obelisk and can be found around the
world. Its history begins in Egypt. There were a great many obelisks in Egypt, 13 were originally in
Karnak where now only 5 stand. Possibly the best known obelisk in Egypt is at the Temple of
Luxor in Thebe. This obelisk was raised by Ramses II. He is credited with raising over fourteen
obelisks at Tanis alone. The obelisk at the Temple of Luxor was originally one of a pair of obelisks.
This missing obelisks was later removed and brought to Paris where it stands in the Place de la
Concorde.
Many of the obelisks that were originally in Egypt are now in different parts of the world. It
appears that these obelisks were the focus of conquerors of Egypt. For example, the Persian leader
Cambyses dragged many of these obelisks to the ground and mutilated them. He especially targeted
those obelisks which bore the inscriptions of cruel deeds that were performed against the Persians.
The destruction of these obelisks by conquerors suggests that these enormous structures represented
the power of Egyptian leaders and were very important to the Egyptians.
Later conquerors removed many of these obelisks as souvenirs. Two great obelisks, which stood
in Egypt for a millennium and a half, were brought to Rome to commemorate Julius Caesar. These
became known as Cleopatra s needles. Ironically, one is now in London and

always be effective because of the growth of prison gangs and the unique ways of communicating
with other inmates in prison and on the outside world.
Prison Gangs and Security Threat Groups
Prison gangs are flourishing in modern prisons throughout the U.S. every day. Every gang has its
own way to distinguish themselves from other gangs. Colors, symbols, hand signs, race, and tattoos
are some of the characteristics gangs use to identify which gang each member belongs to. The
increase in gang activity has been a growing concern to correctional facilities because prison gangs
ultimately put staff and non members safety at risk. Gangs, such as the Aryan Brotherhood, Mexican

Eunice Lathem, 22, Of Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan
Eunice Lathem, 22, of Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan, passed away on the night of November
20th, 1955, after falling through thin ice at a skating party in her honour. Residents of the town
came to celebrate the recent engagement of Lathem and her fiance, Nathan Singleton, on the
cold, November night. The celebration was to be held at a nearby lake which appeared to be
frozen over and suitable for skating. The party commenced at around 6:30 p.m. lasting several
hours before many began to head home. At around 10 o clock that night, Lathem and her younger
sister Delia Sykes were seen venturing out into the east bank of the lake. At approximately 10:05
p.m., several witnesses recalled hearing cries for help. There is a place in that bank where... Show

The night was dark and I couldn t see the girl s faces. All I could do was grasp the nearest pair of
wrists and pull. Singleton recollected. It took all of our efforts another resident, who wished to
remain anonymous, stated, though we were able to save only one . The men who arrived to
help were able to drag Sykes back to safety. As we were doing it, Singleton stated, The ice broke
beneath our feet and the second (Lathem) went under. Onlookers did not realize that Eunice had
fallen through until the hole became illuminated by the moon. We went back to the hole, but
Eunice had vanished. There wasn t any way we could get her body Singleton concluded. Will
Singleton, Nathan s brother, also attended the event. It was an awful thing to have happen on
our place he said. My brother was a hero who risked his life though there was no way on earth he
could save both girls. All I know is that he will never fully recover. All that the town can do at this
point is try and prevent this from happening again. The Willow Bunch funeral home and the
Lathem and Singleton families have organized Eunice s funeral to take place on Sunday,
November 22nd and her name will always be remembered on a gravestone in St. Chad s parish. All

The range of the cheetah
The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a large feline (family Felidae, subfamily Felinae) inhabiting
most of Africa and parts of Iran. It is the only extant member of the genus Acinonyx. The cheetah
can run faster than any other land animal as fast as 110 to 120 km/h (68 to 75
mph)[3][4][5][6][7][8] in short bursts covering distances up to 500 m (1,600 ft), and has the ability
to accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h (60 mph) in three seconds.[9]
The cheetah is a unique felid, with its closest living relatives being the puma and jaguarundi of the
Americas. This cat is notable for modifications in the species paws, being one of the few felids
with only semi retractable claws.[10]
Its main hunting strategy is to trip swift prey such as various antelope species and hares with their
dewclaw. Almost every facet of the cheetah s

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Stereotypes
Khan B Shairani Professor Johnson English 009G May 16 2015 The Societal Impact of
Brooklyn Nine Nine s Progressive Message and Why it is Important TV shows are
representations of societal constructs and, especially in comedies; these constructions are
emphasized to a greater degree. Comedies throughout history have had a tendency to take
advantage of blatant stereotypes and purposefully create a dialogue to elicit humor through said
stereotypes. For example, an instance of stereotyping can be seen in I Love Lucy, this humor is
based around Ricky s Cuban accent and lack of English skills. The apparent punch line being the
characters lack of understanding what Ricky is saying as well as Lucy s mimicry of his accent.
This form of humor is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to having a gay character, the show prominently features characters from other
minority groups. Andy Samberg is Jewish and though his character s last name boasts an Italian
background (Peralta), seemingly offhand comments in the script suggest that Peralta is Jewish
as well. Besides Captain Holt, there is a second black character, Sergeant Terry Jeffords (Terry
Crews). Based on Jefford s physique and problematic stereotypes plaguing black men, one might
assume that he is a threatening figure at the station. He is a tough guy, but he s a family man who
drives a minivan and is concerned about his job taking him away from his daughters. The best
character of strength at the precinct is actually Detective Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz), one of the
two Latina characters on the show. The other Latina detective, Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) is
a mostly by the books cop who is determined to impress Captain Holt and aspires to have him be
her mentor. Detectives Diaz and Santiago both hold their own in the precinct among their male
colleagues and defy the Latina stereotype. Italian American/Jewish actress Chelsea Peretti plays the
third female character, Gina Linetti. These female characters are all strong, independent women.
They interact with each other and have storylines that don t revolve around the men in their
personal and/or professional lives. The classy humor of the show relies on the characters and their
interactions; the ability to remove crude jokes brings a greater meaning to the show

Of Mice and Men the Relationship Between George and Lennie...
How does Steinbeck present the relationship between George and Lennie in this chapter? The
author John Steinbeck presents the relationship between the two characters, George and Lennie
in different ways as they are both different characters and have different personalities. He
presents it like a parent and child relationship, with George being the parent and Lennie the child.
As soon as the reader is introduced to George and Lennie Steinbeck tells us that, They had
walked in single file down the path . This immediately notifies the reader of the kind of
relationship between George and Lennie, it does this by stating single file . This reminds us of a
game called follow the leader. It also tells us that the person at the... Show more content on

I could also notice when I was reading through the first chapter that George has a sense of
authority over Lennie, you gonna get that wood . This is like a parent telling a child to do his
chores. On some occasions though George shows a bit of hatred towards Lennie, he thinks of
what he could have if Lennie wasn t around and contrasts that with George. There is also a sense
of lack of trust in the relationship between the two men. We see this through the predicament with
the work cards. It tells us that George again has to take care of Lennie, and that Lennie isn t
trusted by George. Again this idea is portrayed to the reader on page seventeen, we notice that
George knows that he needs a plan b as Lennie cannot be trusted so his plan b is to tell Lennie to
hide in the brush until I come for you . This helps us to understand the relationship even further.
George also treats Lennie like a dog in one occasion in the chapter, good boy . This is something
a master would say to a dog to encourage them, it also tells us the sort of role in the relationship
George has again.
In conclusion, we see that Steinbeck uses various techniques to portray the relationship between
George and Lennie. But the main method is the idea of George being like a parent to

International Trade Law Flexibilities And Their Utilization
3.International Trade Law Flexibilities and their Utilization in Africa
Thirty nine African states are in the WTO. These states have the duty to comply with the WTO
treaties, which among others includes the TRIPS Agreement. The Agreement requires states to
respect the rights of patent holders over their products. Accordingly, only the patentowner has an
exclusive right to make, use, to offer for sale, sell, or import the product. Nevertheless, amendments
to the TRIPS Agreement issued exceptions that favor the public health needs of least developed
countries. Among the thirty nine WTO member states from Africatwenty four are direct
beneficiaries of these flexibilities as they are included in the Least Developed Country list of the
UN. Four of the exceptions to the TRIPS Agreement and their use in Africa are discussed below.
3.1.Compulsory License
As per the main TRIPS Agreement the government of the country where the patent is registered
was allowed to authorize the supply of the product only for domestic market without the consent of
the patent owner. Amendment to the TRIPS agreement introduced the compulsory license
exception, which allows countries to allow production and sale of patented pharmaceutical products
to least developed countries, and to countries that requested the application of compulsory license
exception, without the patent holder s consent.
Utilization of compulsory license requires proper regulation and planning from governments of both

John Locke s Theory Of Personal Identity And Diversity

Homicidal Somnambulism
Imagine that one night you end up sleepwalking and end up killing someone. Sounds crazy doesn t
it? Things like this have actually happened. There are now 68 known cases of homicidal
somnambulism. (BBC) . Homicidal somnambulism is the act of murdering someone while in the
state of sleepwalking. The legal argument for this has been that the defendant was not in their
normal state of mind while this has happened and therefore cannot be blamed for such a crime.
Locke is known to believe in his theory of personal identity and diversity. Locke s theory talks
about consciousness and how our consciousness makes our identity through our experiences.
Locke states that we are only considered guilty of committing a crime if we were aware of it and
remember doing it. Although I agree with Locke in some terms regarding our identity having
something to do with our consciousness, I do not fully agree.
One of the problems that comes to mind with this to me is how could we prove that someone was
actually sleepwalking and that they are unaware of their actions. Can we trust them and take their
word for it or is there a scientific way in which we can prove it.
Locke distinguishes between man and person. Locke s theory talks about consciousness and how
our consciousness makes our identity through our experiences. A person can be conscious, self
aware and rational. Consciousness to Locke is awareness of our body and

World hunger is considered one of the global food crises and sadly more than more 850 million
people in the world are suffering from it specially in developing countries.
(Holt,2008,para.1).Some people assume that world hunger is still a grave problem because
simply there is no enough food to feed everyone. However , scientists who have studied world
hunger will tell you that the world produces more than enough food to feed everyone on the
planet. But why there is still many people suffering from hunger? A rise in the global human
population at the rate of 75 million annually, paired with rising living standards in emerging
economies are causing an increase in global food demand. This is particularly pertinent for animal
protein, for which demand is expected to grow by 70 percent by the year 2050. In addition to
traditional systems, the ever increasing demand is currently met by a constant expansion in
intensive and modern livestock production systems. However,

The purpose of this chapter is to describe the analytical methods that are available for detecting,
measuring, and/or monitoring chlorine dioxide and chlorite, its metabolites, and other biomarkers
of exposure and effect to chlorine dioxide and chlorite. The intent is not to provide an exhaustive
list of analytical methods. Rather, the intention is to identify well established methods that are used
as the standard methods of analysis. Many of the analytical methods used for environmental
samples are the methods approved by federal agencies and organizations such as EPA and the
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Other methods presented in this

The absorbance is proportional to the concentration of the chlorine dioxide in water. Indicators
used for this technique include N,N diethyl p phenylenediamine, chlorophenol red, and
methylene blue (APHA 1998; Fletcher and Hemming 1985; Quentel et al. 1994; Sweetin et al.
1996). For example, chlorophenol red selectively reacts with chlorine dioxide at pH 7 with a
detection limit of 0.12 mg/L. The interferences from chlorine may be reduced by the addition of
oxalic acid, sodium cyclamate, or thioacetamide (Sweetin et al. 1996). APHA Method 4500 CLO2
B, iodometric titration analysis, measures the concentration of chlorine dioxide in water by
titration with iodide, which is reduced to form iodine. Iodine is then measured colorimetrically
when a blue color forms from the production of a starch iodine complex. The detection limit for
this method is 20 Вµg/L (APHA 1998).

A QBB file is created by Intuit s QuickBooks software when the backup feature is utilized. These
files are proprietary and cannot be read by any other software package available to the average
consumer.
If you use QuickBooks to store and manipulate your company s financial data, it will become
crucial that you take steps to protect this data. Given enough time, the most reliable PC will have
some sort of hardware malfunction. But what to do when the company file becomes corrupted?
It is important to realize that using the same version of QuickBooks to restore the file as it was
backed up is recommended and that trying to restore a backup file (QBB) using an older version
of QuickBooks than the file was created in may not work. Obviously, you will need a computer
with an installed version of QuickBooks.

The Song Of Roland In Boethius s Consolation Of Philosophy
Human acts alone, oh Ruler of All, You refuse to restrain within just bounds. Why should uncertain
fate control our lives? (Boethius Bk. I, Pr. V) In The Song of Roland as in Boethius s Consolation
of Philosophy, the characters must deal with the loss of something that is dear to themselves.
Boethius loses his whole fortune and honor and is sentenced to death, and Roland loses his battle,
the men he commands, his best friend and his life. Each of them has trouble accepting his miserable
circumstances, but with the help of Lady Philosophy, Boethius learns to swallow his fate . If

woman, perhaps they would have been able to do the same. This is but... Show more content on

Marsilla, King of the Saracens, is trying to secure Spain to enlarge his kingdom and bring
himself riches and glory. Charlemagne has a more noble cause as he is protecting his own
kingdom, but he is also enthralled with the glories of war and victory. The traitorous Ganelon is
also concerned with his honor and the fact that Roland has hurt his pride. It is this that drives
him to commit treachery and betray his king, country and stepson. Perhaps the love of honor is
most prominently seen in Roland himself. When Roland s rear guard realize that they are going
to have to face the superior Saracen army, Olivier begs Roland to sound his horn to call for
Charlemagne s aid. This would have evened the odds of the battle and probably would have
changed the outcome, but Roland s pride and fear of dishonor control him. He rebukes Olivier: I
would play the fool! throughout sweet France my glory would be lost... Almighty God forbid
my family should reprove me, or sweet France ever fall into disgrace. (83 84) Because of this
folly, he is beaten in battle and every Frankish soldier in the skirmish, himself included, is killed.
When he finally does blow the horn, it is much too late to save

The Project Employs Both Primary And Secondary Sources
The project employs both primary and secondary sources of research. In order to better understand
SMFBA and how they are doing in sustainability, as well as, where I might suggest
recommendations, I did a thorough analysis of the organization. In addition to that, academic
literature, industry based publications and online resources on sustainable distribution and logistics
were reviewed as essential background information. In an attempt to gain insight into these topics,
my contact at SMFBA was actively contacted on a monthly basis for strategic advice and
suggestions. He also provided me with valuable documents, such as master schedule of their fleet,
agency lists, pick up and drop off locations of food and identified hunger zip codes.... Show more

Hence, these trucks are neither energy efficient nor in the best of conditions. SMFBA does have a
small core staff that is permanent, however, the bulk of the logistics work related to distribution,
like sorting of food, packing of boxes, loading and unloading is done mostly by volunteers.
Therefore, there is a contingency of consistent and reliable performance. There is also no formal
training or education given to these volunteers on handling food boxes. Regardless of these
limitations, SMFBA wants to grow ambitiously, increasing their current distribution of 77 million
pounds of food to 100 million pounds of food annually. Therefore, in order to reach that target, with
limited and constrained infrastructure and expertise, it realizes it has to strategically turn its
operations into sustainable ways to reduce risk and cost and make maximum benefit out of
minimum resources. So, it would be safe to say, that there is a very strong motivation for the
organization as well as its upper management to imbibe sustainability into their daily operations
from a top down approach.
B Baseline assessment of current assets and problems
Current assets: Motivation and support within the organization and a proactive management to
transition to sustainable methods of logistics handling and food distribution. Established reputation

Beggars Can T Be Choosers Analysis
Beggars can t be choosers. That s what I told myself. For years I ve been trying unsuccessfully to
watch films from the Coen brothers. So far, I ve managed to only catch up with their True Grit
remake, which I did not care for. Now, after scouring Netflix and TV for what seemed like ages, I
came across The Ladykillers. I knew this movie does not have a particularly upstanding reputation,
as Coen fanatics and regular moviegoers don t seem to like it. But I still need to educate myself on
the Coens. Beggars can t be choosers.
This remake of a 1955 film of the same name stars Tom Hanks as G.H. Dorr, a southern professor.
Dorr rents a room in Mississippi home of Marva Munson (Irma P. Hall), a religious old widow, on

Hall as the landlady is serviceable in the role, bringing a certain honesty and genuineness to the
performance. J.K. Simmons does fine in his role, too, although I would not put this performance up
with his best work by any means. Lastly, since Tzi Ma and Ryan Hurst have smaller, one note/joke
roles, Marlon Wayans does his thing as a loudmouthed, foulmouthed black punk. His shtick quickly
becomes tiresome and annoying, though, as we have seen this character type too many times for it
to provide much amusement.
Though the performances are important, the main reason I watched The Ladykillers was to
begin to get a grasp for the Coen brothers. I was intrigued by the Coens from their work in this
movie. Partly because this is only the second film of theirs I ve seen, but also partly from their
ingeniousness, I never knew what to expect from the camera. This led to a more visually exciting
experience as I leaned forward in my seat in anticipation of the Coens next

American Dream or African American American Nightmare
The Declaration of Independence was written so Americans could achieve this dream, but the
African slave was never intended to be a part of this American Dream. To the African American,
there were and still are many restrictions that go along with the American Dream.
In Toni Morrison s novel, Song of Solomon, Macon Dead craved for the American Dream. He was
in denial and believed that he could be just as successful as the white man. Macon desired to own
everything, including people. Macon tells Milkman the following:

the woman at the top of the stairs there was no way for him to resist climbing up toward her
outstretched hands, her fingers spread wide for him, her mouth gaping open for him, her eyes
devouring him. In a dream you climb stairs (239).
Was this old woman, Circe, real or part of one of Milkman s dreams/nightmares? Could Macon s
grandfather really fly?:
He was flying. He flew. You know, like a bird. Just stood up in the fields one day, ran up some hill,
spun around a couple of times, and was lifted up in the air. Went right on back to wherever it was
he came from (323).
Was Ruth, Milkman s mother, almost swallowed up by her garden plants as Milkman watched from
the kitchen window?:
They were smothering her, taking away her breath with their soft jagged lips. And she merely
smiled and fought them off as though they were harmless butterflies (105).
It really does not matter because dreams become reality and vice versa in Milkman s world.
The dream of the women in Song of Solomon was to find a man or husband to take care of them.
Ruth thought that by marrying a man with Macon s status, money and ownership of property, she
would live the perfect fairytale life. This dream turns into a nightmare as Macon either ignores her
or raises a hand to strike her. This unhappy marriage often caused Ruth to dream about

  • 2. The Danger of Using Literature and Fiction as a Historical... Literature and fiction can be dangerous to use alone as a historical source. However, in looking at it with an analytical and open mind and incorporating it with textbooks, readers can gain tremendous knowledge from literature. Looking at the portrayal of a topic by an author is important. All authors write with specific audiences in mind, and with an intention or point. Understanding the point that authors strive to convey can reveal a great deal about opinions and perspectives of the time period. Literature is absolutely essential to world history. The insights in fiction go far beyond that of textbook learning. Genderroles, the role of the court, and romances are effectively portrayed in fiction, and convey insights that are different from those in a textbook. The role of males in Aristocratic Japan and Italy was far superior to women. Both Heian Japan and Renaissance Italy accepted a sexual double standard. For example, extra marital affairs were normal for men. They were even openly discussed. In Italy, though men could only have one wife at a time, there were high death rates, so many people married more than once in their lives. Wealthy Japanese men most commonly had concubines. Although Christianity in Italy had prohibited concubines, wealthy men did have mistresses, who did not have any legal standing. Heian Japan believed that the first wife was most important, but polygamy was still popular and accepted. Unlike the exploitive lives of wealthy Japanese and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Cyber Criminals And The National Security In these days, internet is more important than ever, and therefore, having security plans will, at least, make things challengeable for hackers. Dinicu (2014) claims that cyber criminals threats to the national security are the most dangerous and most recent ones. Also, she writes, hackers main focus is more on democratic countries and multinational organizations than the non democratic countries (Dincu 2014). Fifty years ago, we would not have to worry about internet security because we would not have so much money and privacy depending on internet. But nowadays, our communication, money, traveling, etc. can be affected by one or more cyber criminals. We work and our money comes to us using direct deposit; we call our loved ones... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, it is crucial to learn about the methods that hackers use to steal information. By learning about hacking, we can help ourselves and others to stay safe while using the internet. One of the ways in which hackers steal information from people is physically. In physical hacking, hackers are usually trusted by their victims or have some sort of relationship with them. One example is getting papers that show PII (Personal Identifiable Information) from the garbage cans. According to Arlistch and Edelman (2014), one of the easiest hacking methods is physical hacking. They claim that physical hacking are usually more successful because they are quicker and hackers sometimes find the information they want stored in thumb drives and old devices. The information hackers find sometimes helps them to access victims accounts, and they get more information by finding important data about their victims. In addition to papers, hackers are really interested in thumb drives, old cell phones, and anything that can store information. We may think that we can delete our files from a thumb drive and it is safe to let someone to barrow it or get it after clear the thumb drive and format it, but it is not. In fact, hackers can get many files from the devices and thumb drives that have been formatted multiple times using recovery software programs. In some other cases, hackers have direct access to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Benefits Of Early Childhood Education Essay Kendall Blaich Mr. Bergmann AP English 8 September 2015 Benefits of Early Childhood Education The earlier you enrich a child s life with an education, the greater the outcome will be in the future. Parents are the first teachers of young children. Children acquire their knowledge and actions from observing their parents. That is how their minds develop and how they obtain certain skills. Early Childhood Education leads to social and emotional development, increased literacy, and fiscal savings. The first outcome of early childhood Education is social and emotional development. • 6. Analysis of Disability by Nancy Mairs University Of Balamand Faculty of Health Sciences English Communication Skills (Eng203) Critical analysis of Disability by Nancy Mairs Priscilla Farah May 11, 2012 Author of disability Nancy Mairs who s a feminist and a cripple, has accomplished a lot in writing and teaching. Her remarkable personality shows in many of her essays especially in Disability which was first published in 1987 in the New York Times. In this essay, Nancy Mairs shows how disabled people are constantly excluded, especially from the media. By giving out facts and including her personal experiences, Mairs aims for making some changes regarding the relationship between the media and people with disabilities. Mairs thesis is shown implicitly in the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nancy Mairs starts Disability with self revelations which show through her entire essay, like for instance: I am a forty three year old woman crippled with multiple sclerosis... ; take it from me... ; I m the advertisers dream... The fact that Nancy Mairs mentions herself a lot makes her essay lack objectivity. But the reason behind this is that few are the people who can relate to this topic. So no one really knows what this is about as much as Mairs and all disabled people who form a minority do. This tells us that the author knows what she s talking about. Since this essay is addressed to people who don t know much about disability, its purpose is not merely to inform us about the physical disability itself but also about the psychological effects of the constant isolation and exclusion of people with disabilities. This makes the essay persuasive rather than argumentative since the author only mentioned her attitude towards this subject. But what a better way to do it than having a person with disability talk about his/her personal experiences? Persuading people of Mairs point of view which is that disabled people should be included in the daily activities couldn t be done by just stating objective facts. This kind of persuasion needs examples. To prove that disabled people are unfairly treated, Nancy Mairs gives an example of a crippled women who was stopped from doing what she wanted to do, though she was still physically able to do ... Netflix uses a subscription based model, that allows customers to utilize their services through a per month fee rather than a pay as you go rate. Their second main strategy is focused on product differentiation. Not only how customers obtain the content and use it, but also what customers choose what to watch. Netflix s leading competitive advantage lies within their unique software. The software takes what a customer has watched or rated and based upon that information builds a list of suggested titles similar to ones they have just watched. While other companies like Blockbuster has transitioned into the rent by mail niche category that Netflix had started, no other company has customer profiling software quite like Netflix. It is continuously updating their smart selection technology to keep up with customer needs. Over the past few years the film rental market underwent a major shift. The in store rental market plummeted by nearly $2 million, while vending machine rentals increased by about ten times the amount and by mail rentals nearly doubled. However, Video On Demand (VOD) services obtained through cable, digital, and subscription also saw even larger increases. All of these changes meant companies like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video had to either restructure and make a complete business model shift or face bankruptcy. • 8. Character Analysis Of Hannibal Lecter What makes a villain a villain? Is it the senseless violence inflicted upon the innocent? Or is it the oh so tragic backstory that is dramatically revealed just when the audience was really starting to hate them? Or is it when they...you know...eat people? When is it too much? When does a villain become a villain? Is it not all just based on our society s views on what is right and what is wrong? After binging Hannibal, this is pretty much all I could think for several days. Hannibal makes the romance between Will and Hannibal very tasteful and realistic. Their feelings for the other grow slowly, there is not one point when you can definitively say that this is when their feelings begin. It is just an easy, natural progression of their relationship. I admit that the romantic undertones of Hannibal and Will s interactions were what initially led me to watch the show, but I ultimately fell for the masterful writing that Bryan Fuller, the creator, created with Mads Mikkelsen. The NBC revival of Hannibal shows Dr. Hannibal Lecter before Silence of the Lambs, before his imprisonment. It follows Will Graham, a gifted FBI profiler with the ability to see into the mind of anyone he chooses. This ability takes a great toll on Will s mental stability and because of this, he is forced to take on a psychiatrist, Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen). Hannibal s initial goal is to manipulate the FBI from within but he unexpectedly finds himself captivated by Will. Due to Will s instability, it is easy for Hannibal to push the bounds of Will s mind in order to make him realize his true, beautiful potential...as a killer ( Hannibal (TV series) ). The NBC reincarnation of Hannibal deliberately paints a very human monster. In an interview with a UK magazine, Digital Spy, Mikkelsen says about Hannibal, He s something else. The Jim Crow Laws were a system of laws and regulations that African Americans were forced to follow between 1877 and the mid 1960s. The laws were to keep black people separate but equal from white people. This enforced racial segregation and discrimination towards black people. Later in the 20th century, the Jim Crow laws were considered a violation of civil rights and therefore unconstitutional . The laws are named after a nineteenth century minstrel character called Jim Crow, the last name being a reference to a black bird. Thus, a law having to do with blacks was known as a Jim Crow law. The name Jim Crow on the other hand comes from a minstrel character which was played by the white actor who went by the stage name Daddy Rice . Daddy Rice wore blackface make up and put on a show filled with music, singing, and jokes which all degraded black people. The white audiences loved these performances, therefore, making them very popular. Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, published the book in 1959, only a few years before the Jim Crow laws officially ended. Many people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first Jamaican sculptor to be known internationally was Kapo, the famous Pukumina leader, whose works were all composed under religious inspiration (Barrett, 186). The birth of Rastafarianism created an important outlet for African rooted artistic creativity, and the Rastafarian artists became the first ones to appear from a grassroots community. This incredible outburst of creativity is described by Barrett as follows: from the primitive paintings of Ras Dizzy to the superb etchings of Ras Daniel Heartman; from the rough sculpture of Ras Canute who works under the coconut tree in front of the Casa Montego in Montego Bay to the refined pieces in Joe James Gallery in front of the Holiday Inn at Rose Hall, St. James Rastafarian and Rastafarian inspired art can be found everywhere. During the 1960 s, there was a rise in political awareness of the Rastafarians, along with an effort to aid them in the routinization of their movement with the rest of Jamaican society. This effort was instigated by the present Prime Minister, Edward Seaga, who was a noted anthropologist and sociologist. Acid Base Balance Case Study Maintenance of acid and based balance in the body is essential for normal function of biological processes, mainly because of the dependence of pH level for enzyme function. The body concentration of acids and bases is controlled so that the pH of extracellular body fluids is maintained within the range of 7.35 to 7.45. The body maintain this balance by a mechanism that generate buffer and eliminate acids and bases. A baseis an ion or molecule that can accept or combine with a hydrogen ion and an acidis a molecule that can release a hydrogen. (Grossman, Port, 2014). Acids and bases exist as a buffer system. For example, a mixture of a weak acid can reversibly become base or a mixture of a weak base can reversibly become acid. There are two type of acid base imbalance; metabolic and respiratory. Metabolic imbalance is a disorder that produce an alteration in the plasma bicarbonate concentration from the addition to or the loss from the extracellular fluid of nonvolatile acid or alkali. A reduction in pH because of a decrease in bicarbonate is called metabolic alkalosis. Respiratory imbalance involves an alteration in partial pressure of carbon dioxide due to an increase or decrease in alveolar ventilation. Respiratory acidosis is the result of a decrease in pH, ... Taking a Look at Polyester Fiber 2.2 Polyester Fiber 2.2.1 Background and General Properties of Polyester Fiber Polyesters are those fibers containing at least 85% of a polymeric ester of a substituted aromatic carboxylic acid including but not restricted to terephthalic acid and f hydroxybenzoic acid. The major polyester in the market is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), an ester formed by step growth polymerization of terephthalic acid and the diol ethylene glycol. The polyester fibers all have similar properties, are highly resilient and resistant to wrinkling, possess high durabilily and dimensional stability, and are resistant to chemical and environmental attack(Needles, 1986). In 1996, 24.1 million metric tons of manmade fibres were produced globally. The main volume gain took place in production of PET fibres (PET filament 9%, PET staple 4%) (Froehlich, 1997). Dramatic growth in PET fibre production is foreseen in Asia in the near future (Harris, 1996). The cost of polyester, with the combination of its superior strength and resilience, is lower than that of rayon. Polyester fibres are hydrophobic which is suitable for lightweight facing fabrics used in disposable industry providing a perceptible dry feel on the facing, even when the inner absorbent media is fully saturated. As the new methods of PET processing and bonding of are developed, rayon is replaced by polyester on the market. 49% of the total nonwovens market share in USA belongs to polyester staple, reaching up to 291 million pounds in ... Lyrical Analysis Of I Walk The Line Jerrod Betts Lyrics Popular Song Paper #1 Lyrical Analysis I Walk the Line Recorded on April 2, 1956, Johnny Cash s first hit, I Walk the Line, features lyrics in which Cash wrote to explain his devotion to his first wife, Vivian Liberto. At least, that was the original intent. Vivian later divorced Cash due to his use of drugs and affairs he had with other women. With the separation, and the lack of faithfulness to both his wife and to the lyrics of this tune, the lyrics obviously do not hold up in Johnny s case, however the song still serves to explain one s unwavering love for another (Turner). It is especially important to pay attention to the first two lines in each verse, as they reveal the most in terms of the lyrical meaning behind the song. The song begins with the lines I keep a close watch on this heart of mine, I keep my eyes wide open all the time. The key theme in these lines is the idea of Johnny Cash keeping his sights on what is important, his new wife. He is keeping a close watch on his heart as if to ensure it does not give into desires and go astray. This key theme of devotion is continued throughout the rest of the song, as can be constantly seen in each beginning lines in each verse (Cash). I find it very, very easy to be true, I find myself alone when each day is through. These lines in the second verse again reiterate the idea of devotion. They even further the idea by saying how Cash finds himself alone at night when he touring, and not with another. Staying true to ones lover means not going awry, and not cheating on this. So Cash uses this for a lyric in this stanza, and adds in that he himself finds doing so to be very, very easy. This of course will prove to be ironic later in his career (Cash). The third verse begins with the following lines: As sure as night is dark and day is light, I keep you on my mind both day and night (Cash). Non heme sources such as the iron in beans, grains and vegetables is not nearly as well absorbed by the body. Absorption: The capacity of the body to absorb iron from the diet is a crucial factor for developing iron stores and maintaining functional iron. When the body has trouble absorbing iron from foods or when iron is lost through cellular break down, iron deficiency anemia is likely to occur. When the above mechanisms are overwhelmed by the increasing magnitude of the anemia, or when the demands of physical activity or intercurrent illness overwhelm them, a clinical disease state becomes apparent to the physician and to the patient. The severity of clinical symptoms bears less relationship to the severity of the anemia than to the length of time over which the condition develops. An acute hemorrhagic condition may produce symptoms with loss of as little as 20% of the total blood volume (or 20% of the total red cell mass). As a youth, I disagreed with this statement. How could a pen ever defeat a sword? Over time, I have come to understand how words and speech can influence generations more than just fear or force. Cicero s speeches are prime examples of how rhetoric is more powerful than military prowess or use of arms. His rhetoric influenced public policy and successive generations. Unlike Caesar and Pompey, he had no significant military command yet; his reputation was just as strong. Cicero s general objectives in the First Catilinarian Oration were to portray Catiline as a traitor, achieve support for an action against Catiline, and protect himself from any repercussions. To demonstrate this rhetoric I will analyze sections 3 and 4 from his First Catilinarian Oration. • 29. Social Expectations In To Kill A Mockingbird A society will often dictate what is expected of citizens through the unspoken social expectations of the community. These expectations set by society often lead to inequalities, in terms of power and inclusion, which can be seen through Maycomb s court system and Atticus s statements of Maycomb s social expectations. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the conflict between social expectations and inclusion in society stems from the racism and sexism found in the community of Maycomb. This demonstrates that to achieve equality in a community, social expectations that are set by the public cannot limit or restrain a specific set of people in terms of power or inclusion in society. In Maycomb s society, the social expectation of white men having more power than black men illustrates the inequality the community faced when racism is added to social expectations. While Atticus is talking to Jem about how the court system works, he states, In our courts, when it s a white man s word against a black man s, the white man always wins (Lee 223). Atticus s statement reveals that social expectations are related to racism because it causes an inequality in power between black and white civilians. Based on the color of one s skin, it would determine the amount of power they would have in society. • 31. To Kill A Mockingbird Rhetorical Analysis Prose appeals to ethos in this essay by appealing to the reader as a mother, educator, and student. By writing from the perspective of both a student and educator, Prose shows how both are affected by assigned literature. By discussing her own two sons, she appeals to readers who are mothers by expressing her concern about their education. Prose starts out with such strong language to set the tone of the essay and to establish her stance. She does risk putting of readers who disagree with her by immediately talking from a purely emotional point rather than introducing a logical argument. Readers may take offense with the writing she speaks poorly of; for example, as a reader, I personally disagreed with many of her early statements, particularly her negative, simplistic view of To Kill A Mockingbird, which she writes is, ...a chance to consider thorny issues of race and prejudice from a safe distance and with comfortable certainty...dubious literary merit... (Prose 3). Her highly emotional critique of the novel is one of the many example when Prose risks irking or downright irritating her readers. Prose assumes that most high school students do not read on their own and that students do not enjoy the literature they read in school; she also assumes that many students stop reading in their adult life and that what books students read in high school affect them for the rest of their lives. Prose appeals to logos by citing reading lists, surveys, novels, and plays. She also constructs her argument well, following a clear path. Her personal narratives about her experience with King Lear and the effect Wuthering Heights had on her son also help in the structure and flow of her argument. As a person who has read quite a few of the plays and novels Prose cites, my opinion of the article was greatly affected by what I had already read. She assumes her audience is well read and, at the minimum, knows of the books she references. The audience that has not read her novel helps her build her case; they do not have a bias either way and will probably tend to trust her, whereas a reader who has read the book will have already developed their own opinion of the novel and will be able to determine their stance from there. ... He especially targeted those obelisks which bore the inscriptions of cruel deeds that were performed against the Persians. The destruction of these obelisks by conquerors suggests that these enormous structures represented the power of Egyptian leaders and were very important to the Egyptians. As soon as the reader is introduced to George and Lennie Steinbeck tells us that, They had walked in single file down the path . Homicidal somnambulism is the act of murdering someone while in the state of sleepwalking. The legal argument for this has been that the defendant was not in their normal state of mind while this has happened and therefore cannot be blamed for such a crime. Locke is known to believe in his theory of personal identity and diversity. Locke s theory talks about consciousness and how our consciousness makes our identity through our experiences. Locke states that we are only considered guilty of committing a crime if we were aware of it and remember doing it. Although I agree with Locke in some terms regarding our identity having something to do with our consciousness, I do not fully agree. One of the problems that comes to mind with this to me is how could we prove that someone was actually sleepwalking and that they are unaware of their actions. In order to better understand SMFBA and how they are doing in sustainability, as well as, where I might suggest recommendations, I did a thorough analysis of the organization. In addition to that, academic literature, industry based publications and online resources on sustainable distribution and logistics were reviewed as essential background information. In an attempt to gain insight into these topics, my contact at SMFBA was actively contacted on a monthly basis for strategic advice and suggestions. He also provided me with valuable documents, such as master schedule of their fleet, agency lists, pick up and drop off locations of food and identified hunger zip codes.... SMFBA does have a small core staff that is permanent, however, the bulk of the logistics work related to distribution, like sorting of food, packing of boxes, loading and unloading is done mostly by volunteers. Therefore, there is a contingency of consistent and reliable performance. There is also no formal training or education given to these volunteers on handling food boxes. Regardless of these limitations, SMFBA wants to grow ambitiously, increasing their current distribution of 77 million pounds of food to 100 million pounds of food annually. Therefore, in order to reach that target, with limited and constrained infrastructure and expertise, it realizes it has to strategically turn its operations into sustainable ways to reduce risk and cost and make maximum benefit out of minimum resources. So, it would be safe to say, that there is a very strong motivation for the organization as well as its upper management to imbibe sustainability into their daily operations from a top down approach. B Baseline assessment of current assets and problems Current assets: Motivation and support within the organization and a proactive management to transition to sustainable methods of logistics handling and food distribution. Established reputation in the industry and the state for being a pioneer in food banking and distribution. Dynamic and enthusiastic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Beggars Can T Be Choosers Analysis Beggars can t be choosers. That s what I told myself. For years I ve been trying unsuccessfully to watch films from the Coen brothers. So far, I ve managed to only catch up with their True Grit remake, which I did not care for. Now, after scouring Netflix and TV for what seemed like ages, I came across The Ladykillers. I knew this movie does not have a particularly upstanding reputation, as Coen fanatics and regular moviegoers don t seem to like it. But I still need to educate myself on the Coens. Beggars can t be choosers. This remake of a 1955 film of the same name stars Tom Hanks as G.H. Dorr, a southern professor. Dorr rents a room in Mississippi home of Marva Munson (Irma P. Hall), a religious old widow, on the pretense of being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hall as the landlady is serviceable in the role, bringing a certain honesty and genuineness to the performance. J.K. Simmons does fine in his role, too, although I would not put this performance up with his best work by any means. Lastly, since Tzi Ma and Ryan Hurst have smaller, one note/joke roles, Marlon Wayans does his thing as a loudmouthed, foulmouthed black punk. His shtick quickly becomes tiresome and annoying, though, as we have seen this character type too many times for it to provide much amusement. Though the performances are important, the main reason I watched The Ladykillers was to begin to get a grasp for the Coen brothers. I was intrigued by the Coens from their work in this movie. Partly because this is only the second film of theirs I ve seen, but also partly from their ingeniousness, I never knew what to expect from the camera. This led to a more visually exciting experience as I leaned forward in my seat in anticipation of the Coens next ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 55. Essay on African-American American Nightmare in Song of... American Dream or African American American Nightmare The Declaration of Independence was written so Americans could achieve this dream, but the African slave was never intended to be a part of this American Dream. To the African American, there were and still are many restrictions that go along with the American Dream. In Toni Morrison s novel, Song of Solomon, Macon Dead craved for the American Dream. He was in denial and believed that he could be just as successful as the white man. Macon desired to own everything, including people. Macon tells Milkman the following: Let me tell you right now the one important thing you ll ever need to know: Own things. And let things you own own things. Then you ll ... Witches in black dresses and underskirts; witches with pink eyes and green lips...So when he saw the woman at the top of the stairs there was no way for him to resist climbing up toward her outstretched hands, her fingers spread wide for him, her mouth gaping open for him, her eyes devouring him. In a dream you climb stairs (239). Was this old woman, Circe, real or part of one of Milkman s dreams/nightmares? Could Macon s grandfather really fly?: He was flying. He flew. You know, like a bird. Just stood up in the fields one day, ran up some hill, spun around a couple of times, and was lifted up in the air. Went right on back to wherever it was he came from (323). Was Ruth, Milkman s mother, almost swallowed up by her garden plants as Milkman watched from the kitchen window?: They were smothering her, taking away her breath with their soft jagged lips. And she merely smiled and fought them off as though they were harmless butterflies (105). It really does not matter because dreams become reality and vice versa in Milkman s world. The dream of the women in Song of Solomon was to find a man or husband to take care of them. Ruth thought that by marrying a man with Macon s status, money and ownership of property, she would live the perfect fairytale life. This dream turns into a nightmare as Macon either ignores her or raises a hand to strike her. This unhappy marriage often caused Ruth to dream about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
