While this whole experience was outside of my cultural norms, I found that the

form of a crucifix. I honestly had no idea what to expect from the Sunday morning

surprise the Haitians who attended the church service were dressed in very nice
clothing. I believe this was the biggest stereotype going into the church service.
After spending time in nearby villages and interacting with the Haitian people, I did
not think they would have the means to have such nice clothing. I love that
throughout the week they wear casual clothing and on Sundays wear their best
clothing. That reminded me a lot about how I was raised. As a child, I always had

We saw no other than the old couple we had seen multiple times in the maze. Turns
out, they were the owners of Swank Farms and they go undercover in the corn
maze to catch kids like us. They told us we were under arrest for vandalism of
private property and then asked where our parents were. We told them that Luke s
mom was in the car and they told us to show them. So the owners of Swank Farms
and the two cops walked us through all of Swank Farms as everyone stared straight
to Luke s mom s car. As we neared the car Luke s mom looked up from our book
and her face changed from peacefullness to utter disappointment. She got out of the
car and the owners asked her if she would come with them to the office. When we
got to the office they went and talked with her in the back room as the cops sat
with us. When they emerged, the owners said we could leave and Luke s mom
brought us outside. She told us that they decided that they would not press charges
as long as we left Swank Farms. We told her that we understood and then walked
awkwardly back to the car. She was very mad at us and we didn t want to say
anything to make thinks worse, so everyone was dead silent. It stayed that way all

In the movie Half Nelson, Dan Dunne is a middle school history teacher and the
coach of the girls basketball team of his school. Besides what he does at his school,
he has cocaine addiction as throughout the movie, he either smoke or snort the
cocaine in his free time. This is shown a frequent amount of times throughout the
movie. This movie is taking place in a neighbourhood in Brooklyn that is
undeveloped. This is a common problem for people with these drugaddictions as it is
somewhat affecting their lives. In Half Nelson, whenever Dan feels sad, depressed
or feels stressed out due to either his family problems, school or any other problem,
he would use cocaine to get high and not dealing with his problems. By him doing

and talented students face the same issues as their regular peers but they have
different way of viewing these issues and it affects them differently as well. The
book discussed different issues that gifted learners face and recommendations on
how to address these issues were also available for teachers, administrators and other

What are your responsibilities as a teacher in helping students deal with these issues?
Gifted learners face different issues that affect their social, emotional, and cognitive
abilities. These students spend one third of their time with us, teachers, from
Monday to Friday, thus we have lots of responsibility to help them develop and
hone their skills and discover new skills and at the same time help them face all the
issues in their lives. Before we can even help these children, we need to know our
responsibilities as educators. In the book Social and Emotional Curriculum With
Gifted and Talented Students, authors Day Vines, Patton, Quek and Wood (2009)
pointed out an important role that school personnels need to employ. They said that
all school personnel need to demonstrate cultural competence. Why is there a need for
all school personnel to demonstrate culture of competence? School personnel must
have the knowledge and awareness of the different cultural characteristics in order to
avoid race based biases and stereotypes. Whether we are truthful or not, reality is, we
have preconcive notions about people/children of a specific race, skin color, etc. have
