The War Of The United States Army
Many stories are told throughout history with a flourish and twinkle in the eye. From tales of the
Roman Empire and its long suffering fall to revolutions sparked around the globe that ignite a sense
of patriotism and independence in its citizens, from France to Vietnam. A story that is passed down
from generation to generation, though, is the story of the Screaming Eagles, or the 101st Airborne
Division of the United States Army, and no other time is more ripe for storytelling about these
brave men, these Band of Brothersfrom the 506th Infantry Regiment, than World War II. From
simple beginnings in western Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia and New York and Arkansas, to
training camp in Georgia, we hear the stories of desperately young men transformed by war, by
death and destruction and small pieces of glittering hope, and we laud their bravery, their sacrifice,
and their determination. Who exactly are these Band of Brothers, and what did they do that
contributed so heavily to their god like status then and now? From Camp Toccoa in Georgia to the
beaches of Normandy, the bitterly cold forests of Belgium, the small towns of Amsterdam, and
finally to the heartland of the Third Reich, these raucous, courageous, honorable men shaped each
part of the war they attended, and their legacy lives on through story and media today.
Formation of the Screaming Eagles To better understand the significance the 101st airborne played
to the war, it is imperative to understand the

Essay on Reverse Discrimination and Affirmative Action
Reverse Discrimination and Affirmative Action
Discrimination in employment has been an issue that has plagued our society throughout history.
At the turn of this century it was acceptable to advertise job openings and specifically state that
people of a certain race, color, religion, gender, or national origin need not apply . A lot has
changed over the last 100 years. The proverbial pendulum has swung in the direction of federal
protection of certain people, but the problem now is that it has swung too far.
Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act states that it is unlawful for an employer to fail or refuse to
hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect

In Wygant v. Jackson Board of Education, (476 U.S. 293)(1981) the Supreme Court took into
account the harmful effects suffered by whites from government policies designed to serve the
permissible purpose of redressing the continuing effects of past racial discrimination are
constitutionally significant inequities that can be justified only by compelling state interests.
(Chang 1)
This case dealt with layoff procedures in a public school system during the height of affirmative
action. An important aspect of this case was that there had been prior racial discrimination lawsuits
litigated in 1976 and again in 1979, Jackson Education Assn. v. Board of Education (Jackson I and
Jackson II, respectively). The Board of Education relied upon these cases as proof of past
misconduct and racial discrimination in order to validate their current remedial attempts.
Nonetheless, the court decided that ultimately, two wrongs do not make a right.
The layoff policy was as such that tenured nonminority faculty members were being laid off while
minority faculty members (some of whom were still classified in a probationary status) were
retained in order to fulfill remedial requirements. The court found that this policy was in violation

The Great Balloon Chair Ride Summary
The story about Larry Walters, a thirty three year old truck driver who wished he could fly, and
The Great Balloon Chair Ride occurred in 1982. One summer afternoon, Larry Walters decided
to attach weather balloons to his ordinary old aluminum lawn chair and aviated around the Los
Angeles area. Walters ascended 16,000 feet in the air with a lawn chair, seat belt, an altimeter, a
compass, flashlight and extra batteries, beef jerky, a California road map, and a first aid kit.
During his ascent, he dropped his glasses and the BB gun he was planning on using to pop the
balloons to control his altitude, which resulted in him crash landing and blacking out a
neighborhood. Larry s Great Balloon Chair Ride earned him great fame, landing him interviews...

The story takes place when Fulghum, the author, is left to babysit eighty children seven to ten
years old, in the church social hall. He decides to organize a game called Giants, Wizards, and
Dwarfs to keep the kids entertained and involve some of their intellectual decision making
skills. As the game reached its climax, Fulghum yelled at the children to decide whether they
were a giant, wizard, or dwarf. While the groups frenzied and consulted, a little girl emerged
from the crowd and asked Fulghum, Where do the Mermaids stand? In shock of the girl s
response, Fulghum took a long pause to think and in the end he decided that the Mermaids
stands next to the king, which was Fulghum himself. The meaning of this quote is that there will
be someone, somewhere, who doesn t accept the norms and is defined by their category. The
mermaid the author refers to in the quote would be the little girl and how she was that one
person who wasn t afraid to be different. To add on, those who are different, tend to stand out
among the others. I chose to analyze this quote because I kind of relate to the girl in the quote.
Just like the girl or mermaid, people (and myself) label me as out of the norm because I have a
weird sense of humor. In conclusion, being different isn t so

Religious Characters in The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer...
Religious Characters in The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer
*Works Cited Not Included
When thinking of the figures in the church, they are thought to be loyal, respectful, giving, and
dedicated. Sadly to say this, but not all figures follow that description. In
The Canterbury Tales , Chaucer shows the corruption of the church in the medieval period through
some of his characters, particularly through the Nun, the Monk, and the Friar. Yet, Chaucer does
show one character, the Parson, as goodness and holiness in the church. Nuns are member of a
religious order for women, living in a convent under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Their
orders vary in the stipulations of the vows, some being permanent, and others only for ... Show

One positive point is that she does have a clean mouth and watches what she says. Monks have
abandoned the world for religious reasons and devote their lives, either separately or in a
community, to spiritual perfection. The vows of celibacy, poverty, and obedience under which
they live, are termed the religious counsels. A person bound by such vows is known as a religious.
Chaucer s Monk s sport was hunting. The Rule of good Saint Benet or Saint
Maur (Prologue, 177) says hunters are not holy men (Prologue, 182). He does not keep to his
studies, but instead would rather be doing labor. In addition, he holds worldly possessions, such as
his wrought gold cunningly fashioned pin (Prologue,
200), which shows that he has money. Friars differ from monks, in that the monk was attached to a
specific community within which he led a withdrawn life, having no direct contact with the secular
world.
Friars, on the other hand, belonged to no particular monastic house, but to a general order and
worked as an individual in the non religious world. Thus, friars and monks are not on synonymous
terms. Friars are members of certain religious orders who practice the principles of monastic life
and devote themselves to the service of humanity in the secular world.
Originally, their rules forbid holding either community or personal property. The resulting
dependence of friars on voluntary

We Grow Accustomed to the Dark...
We grow accustomed to the dark... Darkness is a recurring image in literature that evokes a
universal unknown, yet is often entrenched in many meanings. A master poet, Emily Dickinson
employs darkness as a metaphor many times throughout her poetry. In We grow accustomed to the
dark (#428) she talks of the newness that awaits when we fit our Vision to the Dark. As enigmatic
and shrouded in mystery as the dark she explores, Dickinson s poetry seems our only door to
understanding the recluse. As she wrote to her friend T.W. Higginson on April 15, 1862, the Mind
is so near itself it cannot see, distinctly (Letters 253). In this musing, she acquiesces to a notion that
man remains locked in an internal struggle with himself. This inner... Show more content on

However, the poem has fluidity despite its apparent scarcity of rhyme. After examining the
alteration of syllables in each line, a pattern is revealed in this poem concerning darkness. The
first nine lines alternate between 8 and 6 syllables. These lines are concerned, as any narrative is,
with exposition. These lines set up darkness as an internal conflict to come. The conflict
intensifies in lines 10 and 11 as we are bombarded by an explosion of 8 syllables in each line.
These lines present the conflict within one s own mind at its most desperate. After this climax, the
syllables in the last nine lines resolve the conflict presented. In these lines, Dickinson presents us
with an archetypal figure that is faced with a conflict: the bravest hero. These lines present the
resolution in lines that alternate between 6 and 7 syllables. Just as the syllables decrease, the falling
action presents us with a final insight. This insight discusses how darkness is an insurmountable
entity that, like the hero, we must face to continue straight through Life (line 20). The next
seemingly arbitrary decision is Dickinson s capitalization. The capitalization at the beginning of the
sentence must be capitalized; therefore, we ll focus on the capitalizations that lie within each
sentence. In this poem, each of these words is a noun. Past this simple reading, what may we
deduce from these capitalizations? Each stanza presents a different set of capitalized objects

The Four Basic Principles Of Design
The four basic principles of design will be incorporated into my journal cover project in order to
make my designs visually stimulating and organized. During the designing process, the
principle of proximity will help me group together images and words that are closely associated
with one another, so it will be clear to viewers which items are related to one another, and those
that are not. Williams s explanation of alignment rules will help ensure that words and images
are not randomly thrown on the cover, and will also remind me to commit to one type of
alignment, unless it becomes necessary for me to use more than one. I will utilize the principle
of repetition in order to make my main ideas distinct; a conscientious effort will be made to go
beyond my usual use of repetition through the use of different font styles, headings, images, etc.
The principle of contrast will help my designs become more visually appealing and will allow
me to be more creative with my color schemes. After I have completed my two illustrations, the
four principles will also serve as a final checklist, to ensure that my designs clearly project the
theme of The Future of Technical Communication, and are easily understandable. My first journal
cover will feature two images diagonally placed from one another, with blurred text to the sides of
each. I decided to include two different sections of text because although it all contributes to the
general theme, the text is separated by association; by

The Difference Between Bisimulation And Forced Simulation
Literature Review: The difference between Bisimulation and Forced Simulation Haowei Zheng
hzhe024@aucklanduni.ac.nz 1.INTRODUCTION
Currently, component reuse techniques have become more and more important for handling the
rapidly increasing complexities of component based embedded system. Bisimulation is a well
known technique which has been proposed in the very early stage of simulation development. It
provides the functionality of checking for process equivalent in process algebras. Many
applications have been developed by using this technique. However, there are still some issues
regarding using bisimulation technique. One specific issue is component matching problem. To
better resolve this problem, a new technique which is called forced simulation is proposed and
developed. In this article, we will carry out a literature review to discover the difference between
forced simulation technique and bisimulation technique.
In the following sections, first of all the component matching problem will be explained more
detailed. Then the definition of bisimulation and forced simulation will be shown. After that, an
example of these two different techniques will be shown for comparing the difference between
them.
2.COMPONENT MATCHING PROBLEM
In component based embedded system, component reuse methodologies has been an important
focus of industry since the complexities of modern embedded system are increasing rapidly.
However, there are several unresolved issues in this

Analyzing Pinkerton s National Detective Agency
In America, there was very famous police organization Pinkerton s National Detective Agency
(Pinkertons or just Pinks) which was established in 1850 by Allan Pinkerton. Agency as well as
SURETE was very successful and even so it was rumored that agency s prestige had to do with
French style nationwide network of informants that frequently used methods of infiltration into
existing criminal bangs. The main differences between French and English detectives were the
following: French ones were secret and effective and English ones were visible and ineffective so
Pinkerton was dominantly inspired by the first model.
Pinkerton became famous when he claimed to have foiled a plot to assassinate president elect
Abraham Lincoln, who later hired ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And since that time when we talk about private police detective agency we can use a pejorative
expression a private eye instead.
Although the company has operated up to now and the current name of organization is Pinkerton
Consulting and Investigation (still known as Pinkerton Government Services), the position of the
organization and its role in society was replaced by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), but many
historians agreed that Pinkerton s agency influenced the FBI, mainly when we talk about
identification methods (or Bertillon system), as well as fingerprints records both were favoured by
Pinkerton.
FBI was created by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte in 1908 during the presidency of Theodor
Roosevelt. It was a force of special agents within the Department of Justice. Roosevelt and
Bonaparte, both shared the conviction that efficiency and expertise, not political connection, should
determine who could best serve in government. So the forerunners of FBI were former detectives
and Secret Service men. When the bureau was established, agents investigated federal crime such as
violation of laws involving national banking, bankruptcy, naturalization, antitrust, peonage, and land

The Story Makers
The Story Makers
Family members can be a person s greatest blessing or his worst nightmare. There are the
relatives that can help one accomplish their wildest dreams, and there are those who succeed in
spite of their relatives. These two types of relatives are very influential and tend to focus on the
important and stressful topics going on in life. Then there are the relatives that inspire the crazy,
wonderful memories that are told to grandkids generations later. These relatives are extreme in
everything they do and can be classified into three specific types: the Drill Sergeant, the
Traditionalist and the Cheek Pincher. The Drill Sergeant plans everything to his or her idea of
perfection. In most cases, The Drill Sergeant in the family is a woman. She often suffers from
OCBD (obsessive children s behavior disorder) and has a supercilious attitude towards everyone in
her family. She pays painstaking attention to the manners of everyone around her and does not shy
from pointing out everyone s mistakes. When the Sergeant cooks dinner for the family, the meal is
often dull and healthy. She adds no seasoning to her dishes because that would ruin the authenticity
of the ingredients. At the dinner table, she stares down each family member to make sure that they
not only chew and swallow every single bite, instead of spitting out the meal into their napkins like
they desperately want to do; she also expects they will pretend to enjoy the meal with smiles on
their faces. Even

Taking a Look at Ancient Empires
Ancient Empires such as Gupta, Rome, Maya, and Rome were some important empires. They all
have Pros/Cons in their Empire. No empire was perfect, each empire had its own ups and downs.
The Romans had a strong military that gained lots of new land compared to the Mayans who did
not have a strong military because their military did not help gain lots of land and didn t really
defend their land well like the Romans did. Rome had better beliefs and religionsuch as Roman
mythology which had stronger beliefs compared to hinduism in Gupta. Even though, Maya enjoyed
good trade such as animal skin, and jade, Romans still had better architecture which was more
helpful. Rome has better characteristics compared to the other empires which makes it the most
successful.
When the idea comes to military, it is important that the military is strong so it can help protect
land/people and help the empire in gaining new land. Mayans didn t have a good military
compared to the military the Romans had. Furthermore, the Roman s military was strong because
they conquered lots of land in places like Italy, Malta, Spain, Portugal, and etc with strong
military tactics compared to the Mayan s military which didn t help in gaining lots of new land.
Weapons like shield, sandal, gladius, other weapons and smart strategies like the orb helped
Romans in achieving lots of new land. For example, The orb was a defensive position which
helped in the defense of the Romans. People can refute saying that Rome had

The Death Of Ivan Ilych
Sigmund Freud, the founder of modern day psychology and psychoanalysis, described human
consciousness as the combination of three elements, id, ego and superego. The id is what controls
our personal desires, the superego controls our ideas about where we fit in society and the ego is
in between these two elements balancing their effects to help us make rational decisions. Despite
the fact that these theories were developed well after Flaubert wrote Madame Bovaryor Tolstoy
wrote The Death of Ivan Ilych the main characters of each (Emma and Ivan) both represent people
who have become dominated by one aspect of their subconscious. Whereas Emma is dominated by
her id, seeking only selfish pleasures in life, Ivan is dominated by his... Show more content on

This attitude of Emma is most apparent in a scene towards the end of the novel in which Emma
attends a masquerade ball with Leon in Rouen. After the dance they go to a seedy restaurant where
Emma has a fainting spell. After recovering, she thought of Berthe, sleeping in the maid s room
back in Yonville (252). After a loud cart rumbles by, disrupting her train of thought, the next
thing she thinks is everything, including herself, seemed unbearable to her. She wished she could
fly away like a bird and make herself young again somewhere in the vast purity of space (252).
Here, Flaubert juxtaposes the image of Emma s pre school aged child sleeping with her desire to
restart her life and try again. These contrasting images powerfully show Emma s indifference
towards her child, and reveal her complete selfishness.
While her feelings towards her daughter show how Emma is controlled by her id, she also
displays a lack of superego function, as she commonly is unconcerned with the rules of society.
At the peak of her relationships with both Rodolphe and Leon, Emma defiantly chooses to not to
care if she is seen in public with her lovers. This lack of discretion finally works against her when
one day in Rouen, Monsieur Lheureux met her as she was leaving the HГґtel de Boulogne on Leon
s arm. She was frightened, for she was sure he would talk. But he was not foolish enough to do that.

The Representation Of The Quetzalcoatl ( Feathered Serpent...
The artist was either male or female, we don t know exactly, but we do know they were from the
Mixtec culture that included the regions of Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Ouebla, Mexico. Furthermore
knowing the artists culture we have a better understanding of the significance of the representation
of the QuetzalcГіatl (feathered serpent) on this three dimensional plate. The plate itself seems to
be 10 inches wide and symmetrical. The feathered god covers the whole diameter of the plate.
Though it s called a plate, we can speculate that this wasn t a traditional plate for food, but rather
than a plate to show sacredness of the mighty god. The artist s palate of colors that they chose is red
, brown and white.
In the artist s palate, the color red is very relevant to the subject of QuetzalcГіatl. This color covers
the whole plate showing how significant red is to this piece of artwork. Correspondingly this red
isn t a normal bright red, but more of a mahogany red to represent the symbolism of blood within
the story of QuetzalcГіatl. The Indianapolis Musuem of Art explains, QuetzalcГіatl was an
important Mesoamerican hero god who created humanity from his own blood. 1 The red
symbolizes blood because of the connection of the color red, blood is red and also this piece is
mostly red, so we can speculate that the artist chose the color red to connect the story of
QuetzalcГіatl making humanity from his own blood. Similarly the brown on the serpent, even has a
reddish tint to it. It is evident

Free Cash Flow and Butler
Introduction Butler Capital Partners (Butler) is an investment fund founded in 1990. Butler closed
its first private equity fund, European Strategic Fund, in 1991. This first fund was mainly
focusing on small family owned enterprises and on divisions of larger companies. Mainly of his
first success he closed in 1998 his second fund, Private Equity II, and Butler became one of the
largest independent funds in France. With his second fund he would focus on investments in
France on a larger scale. On April 29, 1999, a new investment opportunity arose for Butler:

Butler found some important development opportunities for AD: (1) an increase in penetration rate
of AD s CBU among the affiliates by setting up an efficient IT system for purchasing, (2) external
growth opportunities in France by integration of affiliates or acquisitions of independent
wholesalers, (3) expansion opportunities in Europe provided by the fragmentation of the industry,
(4) low competition on acquisitions because of the lack of players able to afford a dynamic build up
strategy, (5) strong growth potential of industrial supplies segment and (6) potential of development
of fleet maintenance and agreements with insurance companies. These opportunities will result in
an increase in gross margins through acquisition of independent wholesalers and integration of
affiliated wholesalers. Furthermore, a reduction of operation costs can be the result, because of the
IT system. With the existence of an efficient IT system, the margins can be improved or the prices
can be cut and these effects are even stronger with consolidation / expanding in the European
market. Besides these opportunities there is an opportunity for an e business market. Butler stated
this as В‘one edge over the competitors . Thus by expanding the business (through e business,
acquisitions, integration) and making use of the new technology systems, AD could realize
significant margin improvement. These high margin improvements are expected to increase from

Rods And Cones Interpretation
The article titled Rods Cones is very interesting explaining to the the reader what happens in our
eyes. In the human retina there are two types of photoreceptors, rods and cones. The rods and
cones have different purposes. The rods are responsible for vision at low light, which is called
scotopic vision. The cones are active for light at higher levels, called photopic vision. The cones
are capable of color vision and are responsible for high spatial acuity. The rods on the other hand
do not mediate color vision, and have a low spatial acuity. There are 3 different types of cones
short wavelength, middle wavelength and long wavelength sensitive cones. The article explains
that turtles, fish, frogs and we humans all have different shapes and sizes of receptors across and
within a species. Figure 1. presents a schematic diagram of the rods and cones. In this figure, one

Positive reinforcement has nothing to do, whether the behavior is good or bad. It is rather the
consequence of presenting something pleasant, such as a reward, money or sex. On the other
hand, negative reinforcement is the removal of something unpleasant. Both positive and
negative reinforcement strengthens our behavior. In order for our vision to occur, we need to
receive and process what we see out in the natural world. The simulation example, stated that
light is going to the eyes or sound wave traveling to the ear. In order for us to react to what we
observe, we need to use the rods and cones based on the different situations we face on a daily
basis. Use an example of someone in a dark room. The eye would naturally use the rods in your
eye to obtain what the environment is like around you. On the other hand, if you were at the beach
or a light room you would use the cones in your eyes for the high light

The Third And Last Pillar Of The German Banking System Essay
Commercial Banks The third and last pillar of the German banking system consists of commercial
banks also known in the third pillar as the market discipline. The third pillar gives out more public
disclosure and reporting requirements, compared to the other two pillars, with its increased
transparency. The amount of this increased disclosure is for giving the public and also the global
market a more comprehensible vision of where the bankstands in terms of risk. (Feig) With
Universal banks being the more common type, responsible for about 75 % of all transactions
carried out in the banking sector, these banks offer a greater amount of financial services and are
more varied than services of the specialized banks. These commercial banks offer typical banking
services such as setting up and watching over clients checking and savings accounts, process their
payments, lending money to clients, and as well as issuing bonds to clients. As of today, there lies
roughly about 300 private banks all throughout Germany. It was only until the crisis in 2008 where
five major banks used to dominate the whole entire private sector. These five banks were
Hypovereinsbank, Deutsche Postbank AG, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, and Dresdner Bank.
Those five banks are more internationalized than any other banks in the private sector that primarily
focus on business clients and the markets fluctuation activities. (Hassan) During the crisis in 2008,

people want to live different lifestyles some want more and some want less. I look up to people
who are not afraid to stand up for what they believe and speak their mind no matter what others

The Catacomb Saints
A 1578 discovery of tombs in Rome has many people baffled. The tombs have the skeletons of
Christian Martyrs who were considered saints because of their unwavering bravery and loyalty
to their faith. The skeletons were called the Catacomb Saints. The skeletons also had jewelry
wigs, crowns and armor. They were displayed in many churches in order to remind people that
riches await loyal Christians after they die. Even though this may sound like a strange story and
many people would have a hard time believing it, it is actually true. Paul Koudounaris, who was an
art historian, was very fascinated with the story of the saints. He traveled throughout Europe in
order to find the status of every saint. He also wrote a book about the skeletons entitled

The Negative Effects Of Office Beliefs In The Workplace
Office gossip is one of the worst problems that can happen in the workforce. When an employee
tries to spread a rumor or something that an employee did, it can have a negative effect in the
work space. There are multiple ways that office gossip can happen and there are ways to remedy
the situation as well. Unfortunately, office gossip is something that cannot be avoided as it is
human nature to bring rumors into the office. There are, however, ways to avoid the situation.
Most workers would choose to avoid talking with others and not sharing their personal life with
fellow coworkers. While it is acceptable to avoid talking about personal lives with other staff,
keeping to themselves do not make an effective team. The first way to avoid office gossip is
simple, but not as easy. It involves not starting the rumorin the first place. By not starting rumors in
the first place, there would be no problems in the first place. Because rumors start from
somewhere, then there is a problem already in the office. For example, if I was an employee
looking to get a promotion with better pay, but was in competition with another coworker, it stands
to reason that I would do anything I can to get the promotion. But when my competition learned
that I did something that the management would frown upon, he starts spreading it across the
office space in an attempt to break my chances of obtaining the promotion. If the bosses found out,
not only would I lose the promotion, there is now a

Benefits And Benefits Of Ultrasound Technology Essay
Introduction: The Advantages and Inconveniencies of Ultrasound Technology The delivery of the
portable compact ultrasound technology in India proposes a significant potential health benefit to
millions suffering from painful or potentially life threatening diseases, such as breast cancer,
gallbladder, and pancreas illnesses. Ultrasound is nontoxic, noninvasive and does not use ionizing
radiation. The ultrasound equipment has the potential to increase efficacy and early detection in
diverse medical fields such as anesthesia delivery, cardiac surgery, sports medicine, and emergency
medicine. An ultrasound is uniquely powerful in that it is the only imaging technology that can be
transported to a patient or used where a patient might most urgently need it. The ultrasound can be
utilized on the side of a road after a serious motor accident or in remote communities, as well as,
traveling to reach a health center. When considered this massive scope of medical applications,
along with the universal necessity for imaging equipment among the country and borough
population in India. The evidence shows why India s ultrasound market poses both a significant
business and public health opportunity. An important ethical issue that General Electric Healthcare
faced when implementing its strategies to introduce diagnostic equipment to developing countries
was the problem of female feticide in countries such as China and India. In regards to the

Paul Krugman s New Trade Theory
Paul Krugman is well known for his New Trade Theory, International Trade Theory, and for his
weekly columns in The New York Times. Krugman has written more than twenty books and
textbooks explaining economics for a general audience. Krugman is a Professor of Economics and
International Affairs at Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton
University and Centenary Professor at London School of Economics. What is critical in Krugman s
approach is he united two fields, which traditionally are separated trade and geography. He has
found a way to explain some issues in economic geography by using the trade theory. He won a
The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Science in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2008 for his New
Trade Theory and New Economic Geography. By examining the effects of economies of scale on
consumers goods and services he is able to explain the patterns of international tradeand the
geographic concentration of wealth.
Krugman vouches that the economy isn t like a family that earns or spends a certain amount of

Development Of Optical Imaging Tools For Synapse Typing Essay
Development of Optical Imaging Tools for Synapse Typing
Restructure of synapse types and alternations of dynamics of neurotransmitters and
neuromodulators have been implicated in a number of human neurological and psychiatric diseases,
including autism, Alzheimer s disease, Parkinson s disease, schizophrenia, and addiction1,2.
However, little is known about how molecular compositions define different types and functions of
synapses and how different synapses organize in micro and macroscale to give rise to complex brain
functions and disorders, due to lack of appropriate tools to characterize synaptic biomolecules in
situ in large scale. Here, I propose a novel research program to develop transformative tools for large
scale mapping of synaptic biomolecules, functional imaging of neurotransmission and neuronal
signaling. Specifically, it will evolve along three main themes: 1. Expansion pathology for highly
multiplexed, in situ and nanoscale biomolecular imaging. 2. Optogenetic neurotransmitter indicator;
3. in situ imaging tools for endogenous protein protein interaction; This program will expand on the
themes of my previous work on engineering optogenetic indicators for neuronal activities, such as
calcium ions3,4 and voltage5,6 indicators, as well as my current work on devising a clinically
optimized form of expansion microscopy7,8, which contribute new capabilities to the broader
communities of neuroscience, cell biology, pathology and medicine.

Video Game Playing and its Effects on Personality and Behavior in relation to Aggression
In recent years, technological advances have introduced many new forms of entertainment, one of
the most popular being video games. Since their introduction, professionals and parents have
become concerned with the addictive power that video games can have on people, particularly
children and adolescents. Today, concern has shifted from the addictive effects of videogame
playing to the possible effects that they have on players aggression levels.
C. Braun and J. Giroux (1989) determined that the most popular category of video games is the

causes people to become more aggressive.
Although important, the addictive properties of the video games will not be discussed. Since
some of the studies cover gender differences but others do not, gender will not play a major role in
this paper as well.
STUDY 1
G. Kestenbaum and L. Weinstein (1985) studied the relationship of heavy video game use in
adolescent male subjects to personality and psycho pathological factors. They hypothesized that
video game playing is positive in the sense that it releases pent up aggressive energies. They felt
that after playing a video game, adolecents should feel more relaxed, having invested so much
energy, whereas those who never, or rarely play video games would not.
They also hypothesized that video games are particularly suited to low frustration tolerance
adolescents because of video games nature of immediate feedback. (As opposed to discharging
aggression through sports, for example, in which the results are delayed from one s particular
effort.) Video games also protect the adolescent from ridicule, or social stress factors since they can
play by themselves and not be subject to external judgement. It was therefore hypthesized that they
would not report a greater general interest in sports than other

Happiness And Happiness In The Art Of Happiness
You should never stress about being happy, happiness is in everyone deep in down we just have
to do certain things in order to let it shine. According to McMahon in order to be happy there s no
need to think about it. McMahan states in paragraph eleven, Those who are happy, he came to
believe, who have their minds fixed on some object other than their own happiness; on the
happiness of others, on the improvement of mankind, even on some art of pursuit, followed not
as means, but as itself an ideal end. McMahon believes you should be a part of something bigger
than yourself. This means help out others by doing something you normally wouldn t do
something out of the ordinary. Helping others gives you a heart warming feeling, and many can
agree on this. Lastly Mill does believe you should spend time with people that mean the most to
you like loved ones, a little of our happiness is based on the people we surround ourselves with.
McMahon is right about being apart of something bigger than yourself because helping others be
happy makes us feel good about ourselves, and more confidence to keep pursuing it.
Be yourself and always move forward, happiness doesn t come from being someone you re not.
According to berns in the video Ted talk you should always move on if you can t do something,
focus on what you can. When people are stuck on something they tend to give up and feel very
self conscience best thing to do is walk away from the situation and do what you re best at. We need
a positive attitude in order to achieve what we want and to be essentially happy. Sam Berns chose to
be happy he chose not to let the little things get in his way of achieving what he wanted, it s all
based on you. Yes he could have been sad, because of the horrible disease that stopped him to
doing bigger things in life yet he was still smiling and moving forward as always his muato.
Some people may say you should spend money on yourselfs and materialistic items to be happy.
Every person s desire is to be truly happy, they do believe that money can fit that desire for
themselves. According to the Ted Talk called Happy many people who were wealthy were are the

Death Of The Ancient World
Death. Something that no one wants to think about much less encounter. Yet we all must come
face to face with death in some way or another. The whole process of losing a loved one and
taking care of the remains made me wonder why we honor the dead the way we do. Why do we
bury them or burn them? What dictates that religion, environment, culture? What is the point of
doing anything at all for the dead? To honor their memory or ease the pain for those left behind?
Deathin the ancient world held a deeper meaning than it does today, in the ancient world they
look out for your soul and the journey it is about to embark upon. Our traditions today are
merely warped versions from these ancient traditions. As I examined some of the ancient texts
from different cultures, I found something very surprising, even across different cultures the
dead were tended the same way. You would never notice these similarities, because the rites and
meanings are so different, leading me to the conclusion it wasn t all culture. Environment plays a
small role but it was insignificant, in comparison to religion. Religion or the lack thereof was
what made these death rites so different and distinctive. Religion affects the practices and
different rituals surrounding how the dead are laid to rest in the ancient world as we see in
Beowulf, the Iliad, and the Bhagavad Gita. If I say Viking, immediately the image of a blonde
haired pillager comes to mind, and if I say Viking funeral, you think of a ship

A Research Study On Mining Water
Here in the U.S mining uses 4,020 million gallons per day, out of that 4 million + gallons 86% of it
comes from surface and groundwater. To put this in percpective if you were a swimming pool
builder and a customer asked you to build a pool that would hold 3.5 million gallons you would
need to build a pool about 950 feet long (almost as long as 3 football fields), 175 feet wide, and 10
feet deep. That s a lot of water!
Mining water is water used for the extraction of minerals that may be in the form of solids, such
as iron, coal, gravel and sand or liquids, such as crude petroleum and natural gas. Mining
withdrawals are considered self supplied water as freshwater or saline water. A recent study here in
the U.S revealed withdrawals from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevada, Florida, Ohio, Arizona, and Pennsylvania accounted for 52 percent of fresh groundwater
withdrawals. Oil and gas operations in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Wyoming and California were
responsible for the large saline groundwater withdrawals in those states because saline water is a
byproduct of mining operations. The use of water in mining has the potential and has been known
to affect the quality of surrounding surface water and groundwater. In response to environmental
concerns and government regulations, the mining industry worldwide increasingly monitors water
discharged from mine sites and has implemented a number of management strategies to prevent
water pollution. One such strategy is the use of remote sensing to assess impact of mining activities
on land and water resources.
Environmental impact assessment is now an integral part of mining operations. Remote sensing
data enables the identification, delineating, and monitoring of pollution sources and affected areas
including changes in surface land use and to water bodies. Using high resolution satellite remote
sensing data and state of the art GIS techniques (geographical information system is a system
designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or

The Taj Mahal Statue Of Liberty And Washington Monument
When one thinks about famous monumental structures, the Taj Mahal, Statue of Liberty, and
Washington Monument may come to mind. The Angkor Wat, however, is one of the largest and
best preserved monuments of the Angkor group that most do not think about. This monument was
built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II in Angkor, which is modern day Cambodia. This
monument is the world s largest religious structure and measures to be about 400 acres. It is built
entirely of stone, which is rather unique considering the intense details that appear on every
surface of this structure. The building was originally meant to be a means of making claims to
political offices more legitimate. They also wanted the powers of their gods to be protected.
Hindu temples are not a place for religious congregation;instead; they are homes of the god (Rod).
About 1,200 square meters of bas reliefs are carved on the walls of the Angkor Wat. These bas
reliefs represent eight different Hindu stories. The Angkor Wat also has an expanded enclosed wall
to separate sacred temple grounds from the rest of the city. Early Cambodia was mostly divided
into rival states up until King Jayavarman II founded the Khmer Empire. The Khmer Empire was
filled with an overwhelming amount of thriving agriculture and most Khmers were animists. This
means that they believed that many spirits contained natural phenomenons. Much of the temples in
Cambodia were made of fine stone carvings, which is rather unique.

Historical Analysis Of Virginian Resolutions On The Stamp...
Historical Analysis of Virginian Resolutions on the Stamp Act (1765)
The Stamp Act that was passed by Parliament in 1765 caused the first major split between England
and the American Colonies. Great Britain had incurred a large loss due to the outcome of the Seven
Years war. Parliament decided to raise taxes directly through the colonists instead of doing it
through the usual regulation of trade. The Stamp Act required all printed material in the colonies to
require a stamp bought from the authorities. The colonists felt this was extremely unconstitutional,
against their liberties and their rights. In 1765, this motivated the Virginia s House of Burgesses
orator, Patrick Henry, to write a document titled Virginia Resolutions on the Stamp Act . In this
document Henry wrote seven resolutions to Virginia s House of Burgesses regarding the Stamp
Act, but only four were approved; the rest were deemed too radical. Regardless of how many
resolutions were approved, all seven were reprinted in the colonial newspapers, which is important
for the intention of the document, because it will be what the colonists read. This paper will
analyze the document and argue why the Virginian Resolutions on the Stamp Act started to fuel the
fire behind the revolution. The Virginian Resolutions on the Stamp Act embodied the ideas of the
colonies that led the start of the American Revolution because it caused merchants in the colonies to
boycott British goods, it also reminded the colonists that

After exposing the sample to UV radiation the visible band is determine to be at the maximum

the reaction SP в†’ MC. By monitoring the exponential decay function of MC, we are able to
construct a linear fit of the data, as shown in Figure 3, which confirms a first order decay. The
corresponding rate constants were determined from the slope of the fit, and it was found that as we
increase [SP] the rate is relatively constant. Further, this reaction was done on different solvents,
which includes acetone and cyclohexane. Following Table 2, it seems that with the addition of
cyclohexane, the rate of decay of MC is faster. This indicates that due to the non polar... Show more

With the inclusion of an organic acid, it protonates the MC to form MCH+. This compound itself
has a different absorbance band relative to MC, which was found to be around 408 nm in
acetone and 453 nm in cyclohexane. Because the reaction must follow this sequence MCH+в†’
MC в†’ SP, the corresponding rate of decay must be slower. As shown in Table 1 and 2, the
decay rate with the addition of TFA is significantly lower relative to just SP in the solution.
However, increasing acid concentration slows down the decay rate because more of MC is
being converted to MCH+. Ergo, it will have a longer process to convert all of the MCH+ back
into SP. Again, comparing the rate of decay of MCH+ at different solvents, it was determined
that the environment did not have a drastic effect on the conversion. In addition, the average of
the rate of decay was calculated for the first four samples and was found to be 0.00630 s 1 and
0.0243 s 1 for acetone and cyclohexane, respectively, which gave an error of 26.0 % and 40.3 %.
The inconsistency with these values was most likely caused by the insufficient time interval for the

The Characteristics Of Artificial Intelligence
One must truly understand what artificial intelligence is in order to assess its usefulness in society.
In the article Artificial Intelligence by Paul Norvig, it states The field of artificial intelligence (AI)
is the science and engineering of machines that act intelligently. (Herzfeld 509). So, what does
Norvig mean when these machines act intelligently? This means that Artificial Intelligencemimics
human intelligence as if it had its own consciousness. Consider this, whenever you perform a
task, for example, sorting colored objects into their matching containers, programmers who
design these Artificial Intelligent machines go through the logical process we do as humans.
So, if someone had a red cube and was looking for its container, one would go through a logical
chronological process. First, one would define the color of the object, red. Then, one would find
out what type of object he or she is holding, cube. Finally, in order to complete the task, sorting
colored objects into their matching containers, one would identify the container that was for red
cubes. This is an example of the logical process regarding Artificial Intelligence. Artificial
Intelligence is difficult to define. There are so many areas in which intelligent machines could
benefit life, a single definition wouldn t fully encompass its capabilities. Noreen L. Herzfeld,

The Definition Of Marriage And Family Relationships Essay
What is the definition of marriage in the Bible? Better yet what is the definition of family in the
Bible? In Scripture there are many families which could be studied in order to better answer this
question, but some of the most prominent choices are Abraham s family, David s family, and
Solomon s family. Each of these families in turn had their own sets of issues and problems, but
there are also Biblical solutions to these problems which shall be address through the course of this
paper. But, before this is done it is important to take note of what God s definitions are.
To begin, I will start by explaining what my understanding of marriage and family relationships
according to scripture are supposed to look like. Now, throughout both the Old Testament and
New Testament many commandments are given to both children and parents. For instance, one of
the most obvious commands given to children was, Honor your father and your mother, so that
you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you, (Ex. 20:12, New International
Version (NIV)). To honor someone means to treat him or her with respect and put them in a place
of high esteem. Honor and respect means a child should not speak back to their parents, they
should not curse out their parents in any way, and in general they should respect their parents
wishes. But, going further than this Colossians 3:20 says, Children, obey your parents in
everything, for this pleases the Lord, (Col. 3:20, NIV).

The Foundation Of Social Philosophy And The Philosophy Of...
III Social Philosophy literally means philosophy of society. Society means general society, the
network of social relations, and not any particular society because the philosophical view points
towards universality. According to Daya Krishna, society is the sort of reality, the truth of existence
of every being in relation with each other. Hence, the subject of social philosophy is the human
society as a whole. As the relations that exist between the objects of nature are different from social
relations, social philosophy does not concern itself with nature and creatures other than man. Mere
coexistence, either among the people of one nation or among the nations themselves, is not enough
for social relations. In the field of social relations, social change and control cause integrative and
disintegrative processes. Both similarity and dissimilarity are to be found in society, though the
former is more important. Unity in diversity... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So are all the social sciences. But it is concerned only with their more general aspects not with
each one of them. The scope of social philosophy can be understood by comprehending its main
problem which is to discover the philosophical foundations of the society. Since the beginning of
knowledge, philosophers have been trying to study the philosophical foundations of various aspects
of human society. They have discovered how far the society is eternal and natural and how far it is
changing and artificial. Whereas some thinkers believe that the individual is independent of society,
others emphasize the social nature of the individual. According to Aristotle, man is born social
animal. On the other hand, Jean Jacques Rousseau held that man s social nature is the product of a
social contract. Indian philosophers too have studied the social nature of man as natural. About the
main problem of social philosophy, John Stuart Mackenzie may be quoted

The Use Of Nanomedicine
The essence of pharmaceutical treatment is for the administered drug to be present at the site of
action in a concentration that exceeds the minimum effective concentration. This is not always
the case most times because of some unchallengeable properties of the drug. As a matter of fact,
there have been several effective therapies made available for many disease conditions that have
failed in their effectiveness because of their inability to reach the site of action. The possible
reasons for the poor bioavailability of these drugs at the required site of action include; their
inability to permeate biological membranes, poor solubility in water as well as the drugs been
rapidly broken down through metabolism and cleared from the body... Show more content on

Nanocellulose are an excellent choice material because they are obtained from cellulose which is
abundantly available in nature, renewable, biodegradable, with low cost, low density, low
ecological toxicity risk, low cytotoxicity to a range of animals and human cells and unique
mechanical properties. It is an evolving renewable polymeric nanomaterial that holds promise in
diverse applications including food and pharmaceuticals. Interest in the production and utilization
of nanocellulose have in recent times attracted a lot of attention from both academic and industrial
researchers resulting from their mechanical strength, transparency and proven biocompatibility.
This attention is mirrored in the flow of publications in scientific literature in recent years.
Exceptional discussions on the chemistry, preparation, and the general properties of nanocellulose
are obtainable from numerous literatures. The surface chemistry of nanocellulose materials makes
them an interesting podium for ready and easy functionalization because they are almost entirely
made of hydroxyl groups. This tendency coupled with their biocompatibility is propelling their use
within different (bio)materials. Nanocellulose materials are in three categories depending on
whether the cellulose is of bacterial origin or derived from the

Doctrine of Double Effect Essay
Alecia Rhines
Doctrine of Double Effect
Trident University
What is the Doctrine of Double Effect?
The doctrine of double effect if often invoked to explain the permissibility of an action that
causes a serious harm, such as the death of a human being, as a side effect of promoting good
ends. It is claimed that sometimes it is permissible to cause such harm as a side effect of bringing
about a good result even though it would not be permissible to cause such harm as a means to
bringing about the same good end. The reasoning is summarized with the claim that sometimes it is
permissible to bring about as merely foreseen side effect a harmful event that it would be
impermissible to bring about intentionally (Uniacke 1984). It is not ... Show more content on

* The action must be appropriate (a): I also have to give the patient the right medicine. If I give the
patient a fatal dose of pain killing drugs, it is no use saying that my intention was to relieve their
symptoms of vomiting if the drug does not have any effect on vomiting. * The action must be
appropriate (b): I also have to give the patient the right medicine for their symptoms. If I give the
patient a fatal dose of pain killing drugs, it is no use saying that my intention was to relieve their
symptoms of pain if the patient was not suffering from pain but from breathlessness. * The
patient must be in a terminal condition: if I give the patient a fatal dose of pain killing drugs and
they would have recovered from their disease or injury if I had not given them the drugs, it is no
use saying that my intention was to relieve their pain. And that applies even if there was no other
way of controlling their pain. (Scanlon 2008).
Scanlon s View on the Doctrine of Double Effect Scanlon explores the ethical significance of the
intentions and motives with which people act. According to Scanlon, these intentions and motives
do not have any direct bearing on the permissibility of the act. Thus, Scanlon claims that the
traditional Doctrine of Double Effect is mistaken. However, the way in which someone is motivated
to act has

  • 2. The War Of The United States Army Many stories are told throughout history with a flourish and twinkle in the eye. From tales of the Roman Empire and its long suffering fall to revolutions sparked around the globe that ignite a sense of patriotism and independence in its citizens, from France to Vietnam. A story that is passed down from generation to generation, though, is the story of the Screaming Eagles, or the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army, and no other time is more ripe for storytelling about these brave men, these Band of Brothersfrom the 506th Infantry Regiment, than World War II. From simple beginnings in western Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia and New York and Arkansas, to training camp in Georgia, we hear the stories of desperately young men transformed by war, by death and destruction and small pieces of glittering hope, and we laud their bravery, their sacrifice, and their determination. Who exactly are these Band of Brothers, and what did they do that contributed so heavily to their god like status then and now? From Camp Toccoa in Georgia to the beaches of Normandy, the bitterly cold forests of Belgium, the small towns of Amsterdam, and finally to the heartland of the Third Reich, these raucous, courageous, honorable men shaped each part of the war they attended, and their legacy lives on through story and media today. At the turn of this century it was acceptable to advertise job openings and specifically state that people of a certain race, color, religion, gender, or national origin need not apply . A lot has changed over the last 100 years. The proverbial pendulum has swung in the direction of federal protection of certain people, but the problem now is that it has swung too far. The Board of Education relied upon these cases as proof of past misconduct and racial discrimination in order to validate their current remedial attempts. As the game reached its climax, Fulghum yelled at the children to decide whether they were a giant, wizard, or dwarf. While the groups frenzied and consulted, a little girl emerged from the crowd and asked Fulghum, Where do the Mermaids stand? In shock of the girl s response, Fulghum took a long pause to think and in the end he decided that the Mermaids stands next to the king, which was Fulghum himself. The meaning of this quote is that there will be someone, somewhere, who doesn t accept the norms and is defined by their category. The mermaid the author refers to in the quote would be the little girl and how she was that one person who wasn t afraid to be different. To add on, those who are different, tend to stand out among the others. I chose to analyze this quote because I kind of relate to the girl in the quote. Religious Characters in The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer *Works Cited Not Included When thinking of the figures in the church, they are thought to be loyal, respectful, giving, and dedicated. Sadly to say this, but not all figures follow that description. In The Canterbury Tales , Chaucer shows the corruption of the church in the medieval period through some of his characters, particularly through the Nun, the Monk, and the Friar. Yet, Chaucer does show one character, the Parson, as goodness and holiness in the church. Monks have abandoned the world for religious reasons and devote their lives, either separately or in a community, to spiritual perfection. The vows of celibacy, poverty, and obedience under which they live, are termed the religious counsels. A person bound by such vows is known as a religious. Chaucer s Monk s sport was hunting. The Rule of good Saint Benet or Saint Maur (Prologue, 177) says hunters are not holy men (Prologue, 182). He does not keep to his studies, but instead would rather be doing labor. In addition, he holds worldly possessions, such as his wrought gold cunningly fashioned pin (Prologue, 200), which shows that he has money. Friars differ from monks, in that the monk was attached to a specific community within which he led a withdrawn life, having no direct contact with the secular world. Friars, on the other hand, belonged to no particular monastic house, but to a general order and worked as an individual in the non religious world. Thus, friars and monks are not on synonymous terms. • 6. We Grow Accustomed to the Dark... We grow accustomed to the dark... Darkness is a recurring image in literature that evokes a universal unknown, yet is often entrenched in many meanings. A master poet, Emily Dickinson employs darkness as a metaphor many times throughout her poetry. In We grow accustomed to the dark (#428) she talks of the newness that awaits when we fit our Vision to the Dark. As enigmatic and shrouded in mystery as the dark she explores, Dickinson s poetry seems our only door to understanding the recluse. As she wrote to her friend T.W. Higginson on April 15, 1862, the Mind is so near itself it cannot see, distinctly (Letters 253). In this musing, she acquiesces to a notion that man remains locked in an internal struggle with himself. This inner... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the poem has fluidity despite its apparent scarcity of rhyme. After examining the alteration of syllables in each line, a pattern is revealed in this poem concerning darkness. The first nine lines alternate between 8 and 6 syllables. These lines are concerned, as any narrative is, with exposition. These lines set up darkness as an internal conflict to come. The conflict intensifies in lines 10 and 11 as we are bombarded by an explosion of 8 syllables in each line. These lines present the conflict within one s own mind at its most desperate. After this climax, the syllables in the last nine lines resolve the conflict presented. In these lines, Dickinson presents us with an archetypal figure that is faced with a conflict: the bravest hero. These lines present the resolution in lines that alternate between 6 and 7 syllables. Just as the syllables decrease, the falling action presents us with a final insight. This insight discusses how darkness is an insurmountable entity that, like the hero, we must face to continue straight through Life (line 20). The next seemingly arbitrary decision is Dickinson s capitalization. The capitalization at the beginning of the sentence must be capitalized; therefore, we ll focus on the capitalizations that lie within each sentence. In this poem, each of these words is a noun. Past this simple reading, what may we deduce from these capitalizations? Each stanza presents a different set of capitalized objects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the designing process, the principle of proximity will help me group together images and words that are closely associated with one another, so it will be clear to viewers which items are related to one another, and those that are not. Williams s explanation of alignment rules will help ensure that words and images are not randomly thrown on the cover, and will also remind me to commit to one type of alignment, unless it becomes necessary for me to use more than one. I will utilize the principle of repetition in order to make my main ideas distinct; a conscientious effort will be made to go beyond my usual use of repetition through the use of different font styles, headings, images, etc. The principle of contrast will help my designs become more visually appealing and will allow me to be more creative with my color schemes. After I have completed my two illustrations, the four principles will also serve as a final checklist, to ensure that my designs clearly project the theme of The Future of Technical Communication, and are easily understandable. Bisimulation is a well known technique which has been proposed in the very early stage of simulation development. It provides the functionality of checking for process equivalent in process algebras. Many applications have been developed by using this technique. However, there are still some issues regarding using bisimulation technique. One specific issue is component matching problem. To better resolve this problem, a new technique which is called forced simulation is proposed and developed. In this article, we will carry out a literature review to discover the difference between forced simulation technique and bisimulation technique. In the following sections, first of all the component matching problem will be explained more detailed. Then the definition of bisimulation and forced simulation will be shown. After that, an example of these two different techniques will be shown for comparing the difference between them. 2.COMPONENT MATCHING PROBLEM In component based embedded system, component reuse methodologies has been an important focus of industry since the complexities of modern embedded system are increasing rapidly. No empire was perfect, each empire had its own ups and downs. The Romans had a strong military that gained lots of new land compared to the Mayans who did not have a strong military because their military did not help gain lots of land and didn t really defend their land well like the Romans did. Rome had better beliefs and religionsuch as Roman mythology which had stronger beliefs compared to hinduism in Gupta. Even though, Maya enjoyed good trade such as animal skin, and jade, Romans still had better architecture which was more helpful. Rome has better characteristics compared to the other empires which makes it the most successful. When the idea comes to military, it is important that the military is strong so it can help protect land/people and help the empire in gaining new land. Furthermore, the Roman s military was strong because they conquered lots of land in places like Italy, Malta, Spain, Portugal, and etc with strong military tactics compared to the Mayan s military which didn t help in gaining lots of new land. The id is what controls our personal desires, the superego controls our ideas about where we fit in society and the ego is in between these two elements balancing their effects to help us make rational decisions. Despite the fact that these theories were developed well after Flaubert wrote Madame Bovaryor Tolstoy wrote The Death of Ivan Ilych the main characters of each (Emma and Ivan) both represent people who have become dominated by one aspect of their subconscious. After the dance they go to a seedy restaurant where Emma has a fainting spell. After recovering, she thought of Berthe, sleeping in the maid s room back in Yonville (252). After a loud cart rumbles by, disrupting her train of thought, the next thing she thinks is everything, including herself, seemed unbearable to her. She wished she could fly away like a bird and make herself young again somewhere in the vast purity of space (252). Here, Flaubert juxtaposes the image of Emma s pre school aged child sleeping with her desire to restart her life and try again. These contrasting images powerfully show Emma s indifference towards her child, and reveal her complete selfishness. While her feelings towards her daughter show how Emma is controlled by her id, she also displays a lack of superego function, as she commonly is unconcerned with the rules of society. At the peak of her relationships with both Rodolphe and Leon, Emma defiantly chooses to not to care if she is seen in public with her lovers. Furthermore knowing the artists culture we have a better understanding of the significance of the representation of the QuetzalcГіatl (feathered serpent) on this three dimensional plate. The plate itself seems to be 10 inches wide and symmetrical. The feathered god covers the whole diameter of the plate. Though it s called a plate, we can speculate that this wasn t a traditional plate for food, but rather than a plate to show sacredness of the mighty god. The artist s palate of colors that they chose is red , brown and white. In the artist s palate, the color red is very relevant to the subject of QuetzalcГіatl. This color covers the whole plate showing how significant red is to this piece of artwork. Correspondingly this red isn t a normal bright red, but more of a mahogany red to represent the symbolism of blood within the story of QuetzalcГіatl. The Indianapolis Musuem of Art explains, QuetzalcГіatl was an important Mesoamerican hero god who created humanity from his own blood. 1 The red symbolizes blood because of the connection of the color red, blood is red and also this piece is mostly red, so we can speculate that the artist chose the color red to connect the story of QuetzalcГіatl making humanity from his own blood. • 23. The Negative Effects Of Office Beliefs In The Workplace Office gossip is one of the worst problems that can happen in the workforce. When an employee tries to spread a rumor or something that an employee did, it can have a negative effect in the work space. There are multiple ways that office gossip can happen and there are ways to remedy the situation as well. Unfortunately, office gossip is something that cannot be avoided as it is human nature to bring rumors into the office. There are, however, ways to avoid the situation. Most workers would choose to avoid talking with others and not sharing their personal life with fellow coworkers. While it is acceptable to avoid talking about personal lives with other staff, keeping to themselves do not make an effective team. The first way to avoid office gossip is simple, but not as easy. It involves not starting the rumorin the first place. By not starting rumors in the first place, there would be no problems in the first place. Because rumors start from somewhere, then there is a problem already in the office. For example, if I was an employee looking to get a promotion with better pay, but was in competition with another coworker, it stands to reason that I would do anything I can to get the promotion. But when my competition learned that I did something that the management would frown upon, he starts spreading it across the office space in an attempt to break my chances of obtaining the promotion. If the bosses found out, not only would I lose the promotion, there is now a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. Benefits And Benefits Of Ultrasound Technology Essay Introduction: The Advantages and Inconveniencies of Ultrasound Technology The delivery of the portable compact ultrasound technology in India proposes a significant potential health benefit to millions suffering from painful or potentially life threatening diseases, such as breast cancer, gallbladder, and pancreas illnesses. Ultrasound is nontoxic, noninvasive and does not use ionizing radiation. The ultrasound equipment has the potential to increase efficacy and early detection in diverse medical fields such as anesthesia delivery, cardiac surgery, sports medicine, and emergency medicine. An ultrasound is uniquely powerful in that it is the only imaging technology that can be transported to a patient or used where a patient might most urgently need it. The ultrasound can be utilized on the side of a road after a serious motor accident or in remote communities, as well as, traveling to reach a health center. When considered this massive scope of medical applications, along with the universal necessity for imaging equipment among the country and borough population in India. The evidence shows why India s ultrasound market poses both a significant business and public health opportunity. An important ethical issue that General Electric Healthcare faced when implementing its strategies to introduce diagnostic equipment to developing countries was the problem of female feticide in countries such as China and India. Krugman has written more than twenty books and textbooks explaining economics for a general audience. Krugman is a Professor of Economics and International Affairs at Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and Centenary Professor at London School of Economics. What is critical in Krugman s approach is he united two fields, which traditionally are separated trade and geography. He has found a way to explain some issues in economic geography by using the trade theory. He won a The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Science in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2008 for his New Trade Theory and New Economic Geography. By examining the effects of economies of scale on consumers goods and services he is able to explain the patterns of international tradeand the geographic concentration of wealth. However, little is known about how molecular compositions define different types and functions of synapses and how different synapses organize in micro and macroscale to give rise to complex brain functions and disorders, due to lack of appropriate tools to characterize synaptic biomolecules in situ in large scale. Here, I propose a novel research program to develop transformative tools for large scale mapping of synaptic biomolecules, functional imaging of neurotransmission and neuronal signaling. McMahan states in paragraph eleven, Those who are happy, he came to believe, who have their minds fixed on some object other than their own happiness; on the happiness of others, on the improvement of mankind, even on some art of pursuit, followed not as means, but as itself an ideal end. McMahon believes you should be a part of something bigger than yourself. This means help out others by doing something you normally wouldn t do something out of the ordinary. Helping others gives you a heart warming feeling, and many can agree on this. Lastly Mill does believe you should spend time with people that mean the most to you like loved ones, a little of our happiness is based on the people we surround ourselves with. McMahon is right about being apart of something bigger than yourself because helping others be happy makes us feel good about ourselves, and more confidence to keep pursuing it. Be yourself and always move forward, happiness doesn t come from being someone you re not. According to berns in the video Ted talk you should always move on if you can t do something, focus on what you can. • 30. Death Of The Ancient World Death. Something that no one wants to think about much less encounter. Yet we all must come face to face with death in some way or another. The whole process of losing a loved one and taking care of the remains made me wonder why we honor the dead the way we do. Why do we bury them or burn them? What dictates that religion, environment, culture? What is the point of doing anything at all for the dead? To honor their memory or ease the pain for those left behind? Deathin the ancient world held a deeper meaning than it does today, in the ancient world they look out for your soul and the journey it is about to embark upon. Our traditions today are merely warped versions from these ancient traditions. As I examined some of the ancient texts from different cultures, I found something very surprising, even across different cultures the dead were tended the same way. You would never notice these similarities, because the rites and meanings are so different, leading me to the conclusion it wasn t all culture. Environment plays a small role but it was insignificant, in comparison to religion. Religion or the lack thereof was what made these death rites so different and distinctive. Religion affects the practices and different rituals surrounding how the dead are laid to rest in the ancient world as we see in Beowulf, the Iliad, and the Bhagavad Gita. In response to environmental concerns and government regulations, the mining industry worldwide increasingly monitors water discharged from mine sites and has implemented a number of management strategies to prevent water pollution. One such strategy is the use of remote sensing to assess impact of mining activities on land and water resources. Environmental impact assessment is now an integral part of mining operations. This monument is the world s largest religious structure and measures to be about 400 acres. It is built entirely of stone, which is rather unique considering the intense details that appear on every surface of this structure. The building was originally meant to be a means of making claims to political offices more legitimate. They also wanted the powers of their gods to be protected. Historical Analysis of Virginian Resolutions on the Stamp Act (1765) The Stamp Act that was passed by Parliament in 1765 caused the first major split between England and the American Colonies. Great Britain had incurred a large loss due to the outcome of the Seven Years war. Parliament decided to raise taxes directly through the colonists instead of doing it through the usual regulation of trade. The Stamp Act required all printed material in the colonies to require a stamp bought from the authorities. The colonists felt this was extremely unconstitutional, against their liberties and their rights. In 1765, this motivated the Virginia s House of Burgesses orator, Patrick Henry, to write a document titled Virginia Resolutions on the Stamp Act . In this document Henry wrote seven resolutions to Virginia s House of Burgesses regarding the Stamp Act, but only four were approved; the rest were deemed too radical. Regardless of how many resolutions were approved, all seven were reprinted in the colonial newspapers, which is important for the intention of the document, because it will be what the colonists read. This paper will analyze the document and argue why the Virginian Resolutions on the Stamp Act started to fuel the fire behind the revolution. The Virginian Resolutions on the Stamp Act embodied the ideas of the colonies that led the start of the American Revolution because it caused merchants in the colonies to boycott British goods, it also reminded the colonists that ... The corresponding rate constants were determined from the slope of the fit, and it was found that as we increase [SP] the rate is relatively constant. Further, this reaction was done on different solvents, which includes acetone and cyclohexane. Following Table 2, it seems that with the addition of cyclohexane, the rate of decay of MC is faster. This compound itself has a different absorbance band relative to MC, which was found to be around 408 nm in acetone and 453 nm in cyclohexane. Because the reaction must follow this sequence MCH+в†’ MC в†’ SP, the corresponding rate of decay must be slower. As shown in Table 1 and 2, the decay rate with the addition of TFA is significantly lower relative to just SP in the solution. However, increasing acid concentration slows down the decay rate because more of MC is being converted to MCH+. Ergo, it will have a longer process to convert all of the MCH+ back into SP. Again, comparing the rate of decay of MCH+ at different solvents, it was determined that the environment did not have a drastic effect on the conversion. In addition, the average of the rate of decay was calculated for the first four samples and was found to be 0.00630 s 1 and 0.0243 s 1 for acetone and cyclohexane, respectively, which gave an error of 26.0 % and 40.3 %. • 41. The Characteristics Of Artificial Intelligence One must truly understand what artificial intelligence is in order to assess its usefulness in society. In the article Artificial Intelligence by Paul Norvig, it states The field of artificial intelligence (AI) is the science and engineering of machines that act intelligently. (Herzfeld 509). So, what does Norvig mean when these machines act intelligently? This means that Artificial Intelligencemimics human intelligence as if it had its own consciousness. Consider this, whenever you perform a task, for example, sorting colored objects into their matching containers, programmers who design these Artificial Intelligent machines go through the logical process we do as humans. So, if someone had a red cube and was looking for its container, one would go through a logical chronological process. First, one would define the color of the object, red. Then, one would find out what type of object he or she is holding, cube. Finally, in order to complete the task, sorting colored objects into their matching containers, one would identify the container that was for red cubes. This is an example of the logical process regarding Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence is difficult to define. Each of these families in turn had their own sets of issues and problems, but there are also Biblical solutions to these problems which shall be address through the course of this paper. But, before this is done it is important to take note of what God s definitions are. To begin, I will start by explaining what my understanding of marriage and family relationships according to scripture are supposed to look like. Now, throughout both the Old Testament and New Testament many commandments are given to both children and parents. For instance, one of the most obvious commands given to children was, Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you, (Ex. 20:12, New International Version (NIV)). To honor someone means to treat him or her with respect and put them in a place of high esteem. Honor and respect means a child should not speak back to their parents, they should not curse out their parents in any way, and in general they should respect their parents wishes. As the relations that exist between the objects of nature are different from social relations, social philosophy does not concern itself with nature and creatures other than man. Mere coexistence, either among the people of one nation or among the nations themselves, is not enough for social relations. Whereas some thinkers believe that the individual is independent of society, others emphasize the social nature of the individual. According to Aristotle, man is born social animal. On the other hand, Jean Jacques Rousseau held that man s social nature is the product of a social contract. Indian philosophers too have studied the social nature of man as natural. About the main problem of social philosophy, John Stuart Mackenzie may be quoted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Use Of Nanomedicine The essence of pharmaceutical treatment is for the administered drug to be present at the site of action in a concentration that exceeds the minimum effective concentration. This is not always the case most times because of some unchallengeable properties of the drug. As a matter of fact, there have been several effective therapies made available for many disease conditions that have failed in their effectiveness because of their inability to reach the site of action. The possible reasons for the poor bioavailability of these drugs at the required site of action include; their inability to permeate biological membranes, poor solubility in water as well as the drugs been rapidly broken down through metabolism and cleared from the body... Nanocellulose are an excellent choice material because they are obtained from cellulose which is abundantly available in nature, renewable, biodegradable, with low cost, low density, low ecological toxicity risk, low cytotoxicity to a range of animals and human cells and unique mechanical properties. It is an evolving renewable polymeric nanomaterial that holds promise in diverse applications including food and pharmaceuticals. Interest in the production and utilization of nanocellulose have in recent times attracted a lot of attention from both academic and industrial researchers resulting from their mechanical strength, transparency and proven biocompatibility. This attention is mirrored in the flow of publications in scientific literature in recent years. Exceptional discussions on the chemistry, preparation, and the general properties of nanocellulose are obtainable from numerous literatures. The surface chemistry of nanocellulose materials makes them an interesting podium for ready and easy functionalization because they are almost entirely made of hydroxyl groups. This tendency coupled with their biocompatibility is propelling their use within different (bio)materials. Nanocellulose materials are in three categories depending on whether the cellulose is of bacterial origin or derived from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Doctrine of Double Effect Essay Alecia Rhines Doctrine of Double Effect Trident University What is the Doctrine of Double Effect? The doctrine of double effect if often invoked to explain the permissibility of an action that causes a serious harm, such as the death of a human being, as a side effect of promoting good ends. It is claimed that sometimes it is permissible to cause such harm as a side effect of bringing about a good result even though it would not be permissible to cause such harm as a means to bringing about the same good end. The reasoning is summarized with the claim that sometimes it is permissible to bring about as merely foreseen side effect a harmful event that it would be impermissible to bring about intentionally (Uniacke 1984). It is not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... * The action must be appropriate (a): I also have to give the patient the right medicine. If I give the patient a fatal dose of pain killing drugs, it is no use saying that my intention was to relieve their symptoms of vomiting if the drug does not have any effect on vomiting. * The action must be appropriate (b): I also have to give the patient the right medicine for their symptoms. If I give the patient a fatal dose of pain killing drugs, it is no use saying that my intention was to relieve their symptoms of pain if the patient was not suffering from pain but from breathlessness. * The patient must be in a terminal condition: if I give the patient a fatal dose of pain killing drugs and they would have recovered from their disease or injury if I had not given them the drugs, it is no use saying that my intention was to relieve their pain. And that applies even if there was no other way of controlling their pain. (Scanlon 2008). Scanlon s View on the Doctrine of Double Effect Scanlon explores the ethical significance of the intentions and motives with which people act. According to Scanlon, these intentions and motives do not have any direct bearing on the permissibility of the act. Thus, Scanlon claims that the traditional Doctrine of Double Effect is mistaken. However, the way in which someone is motivated to act has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
