that Thomas trains him throughout the first Blue Baby surgery over the protests of Hopkins

of the Cardiovascular System. The mainly common reason of blue baby syndrome is congenital
heart defect that is present at birth. The heartis composed of two sides, the right side and the left
side. Each side of the heart has two chambers, a superior chamber for receiving bloodalso known as
the atrium and inferior chamber for pumping blood away from the heart also known as the

Natural Transcendence In Into The Wild By Jon Krakauer
Natural transcendence is a call that not all people feel, however for those who do hear it, it is
nearly impossible to ignore. The great outdoors represent so much to so many and is a gift that
so many reap the benefits of. Some people like the danger and power of nature, while others like
the placid serenity that allows them to be fully at peace. The novel Into The Wildby Jon Krakauer is
all about transcendence through natureand the lessons learned through that type of eternal peace.
The novel is about a young man, Chris McCandless, who after completing his education and
seemed to be set up for future success, decided to leave everything behind and travel into the
Alaskan wildernessin search for more meaning and connection to nature. On his journey to the wild
he encountered many different people that taught him many lessons about other perspectives and
lenses for which to view life, however these new connections he made were not enlightening
enough and he still chose to venture into the Alaskan wilderness. Mccandless traveled into the
wilderness and left his life behind because he did not feel as though the traditional world was a
close enough connection to total transcendence and inner peace. Reading Into The Wild brought
me an appreciation for the knowledge and developing experiences gained by separating oneself
from society to experience and appreciate nature. Exposing myself to nature to find peace is
something that I have done since I was an adolescent. There has

Framework For Success In Postsecondary Writing
We live in a world dominated by language. Whether it be spoken, written, or read the words that
we are surrounded by influence us all in different ways. We are, in reality, byproducts of what we
read, write, and talk about. This being said, our linguistic history tells a lot about us. As the
language I was exposed to followed a natural progression and evolved, so did my linguistic
capabilities. My development of the eight habits of the mind described in the Framework for
Success in Postsecondary Writinghighlights this linguistic progression. My true linguistic
history takes off when I learned how to read. My mother used to gather my siblings and I at the
foot of her bed every night and read us books. I really enjoyed the books but the pace we read at,
one chapter a night, was painstakingly slow and was not curbing my hunger to find out what
happened next. I began to read the books on my own, focusing on mythology and fantasies.
Reading mythological stories told through the perspectives of cultures and ideas foreign to me
helped me develop a sense of openness. I found that because of this background it was easier to
appreciate viewpoints different from my own. And because the stories are mostly fables told by
each culture to teach lessons I further cultivated my critical thinking skills. Seeking to understand
the Whys behind the actually works, I read to understand the purpose of the different author s
messages and purposes. I was find joy in reading things for reasons

Haraway’s A Cyborg Manifesto Essay
Donna J. Haraway s A Cyborg Manifesto
Haraway s provocative proposal of envisioning the cyborg as a myth of political identity embodies
the search for a code of displacement of the hierarchical dualisms of naturalized identities (CM,
175), and thus for the breakdown of the logic of phallogocentrism and of the unity of the Western
idealized self.
Haraway defines the cyborg as a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature
of social reality as well as a creature of fiction (CM, 149). Her argument is introduced as an effort
to build an ironic political myth faithful to feminism, socialism, and materialism (CM, 149). She
claims blasphemy and irony as her vantage tools. Blasphemy invokes the seriousness of ... Show

Cyborgs are technological constructs and thus deny the logic of reproduction; they rather mock the
masculinist reproductive dream (CM, 152). They have no memory of a primary state of innocence;
they conceive of no Father s saving through the restoration of a garden they don t recognize the
Garden of Eden in that they do not re member the cosmos (CM, 151). As they build no sense of
community on the model of the organic family, they live outside the oedipal project they are wary
of holism, but needy for connection (CM, 151). Though the offsprings of militarism, patriarchal
capitalism and state socialism, they are illegitimate offsprings and thus unfaithful to their origins.
The late twentieth century scientific culture in the United States has experienced three crucial
boundary breakdowns:
the boundary between human and animal is thoroughly breached the boundary between human and
machine has become leaky and ambiguous the boundary between physical and non physical has
become very imprecise in that the experience of fluidity and lightness made possible by signals and
electromagnetic waves renders the physical both material and opaque, very near to quintessence.
When boundaries are transgressed, the transcendent authorization of interpretation is lost, and with
it the ontology grounding Western epistemology (CM, 153).
If cyborg myth is about the transgression of boundaries, as Haraway seems to posit, it envisions

Charitable Deduction Essay
Issues: Are there any restrictions that apply to charitable deductions of old clothes and household
items that you, Clarence, intend to deduct? Answer: The applicable restrictions that will be
subject to your intended charitable deduction will be that you will need to get your old clothes
and household items appraised or audited by classification. If such appraisal determines that the
items are worth more than $500 you will qualify to claim the deduction. In addition, any type of
qualifiable deduction for charitable contributions is limited to 50% of your adjusted gross income

In addition, IRC В§170(b)(1)(A) provides the qualified charitable contributions to a church,
convention, association of churched, educational organization, a private foundation shall be
allowed to the extent that the total contributions does not exceed 50% of the taxpayer s adjusted
gross income (AGI). IRC В§170(f)(16)(A) states that an individual is not allowed a deduction for
any contribution of clothing or household item unless such item is in good used condition or
better. However, IRC В§170(f)(16)(C) provides an exception to this general rule, stating that if the
taxpayer s return includes a qualified appraisal with respect an item of clothing or household item
for which a deduction of more than $500 is claimed, such deduction may be allowed. Lastly,
В§170(f)(11)(F) specifies that similar items of property donated to one or more donees shall be
treated as one property. On Mark R. Ohde, et ux. v. Commissioner the case stated that household
items included furniture, clothing electronic appliances, linens, etc. The court held that although
the taxpayer s claimed the items were in high condition, they provided no credible evidence to
support their claim. Thus, they disallowed their claims for charitable deductions.

Livia Druilla Analysis
The choice to study Livia Drusilla in depth was an easy decision. One of a few women to gain
any sort of power in ancient Rome let alone the status that Livia ended up having near the end of
her time. Livia herself is very controversial and is often depicted in one of two ways in most
available sources. The first is that she was a very manipulative woman, that her caring housewife
appearance and manner was all a façade and that she was responsible for the deaths surrounding
the heirs to the throne paving the way for her son Tiberius to become emperor. The second
depiction is that of a truly caring wife, of an individual that did her best to support her husband and
family, who grieved over their deaths and who could not possibly have committed

Sociological Accounts on Individuals Acquiring Their Identities
The concept of identity has been defined as A sense of self that develops as the child differentiates
from parents and family and takes a place in society (Jary and Jary, 1991.) Through the process of
socialization, individuals acquire their identities, but this issue cause different understandings
according to sociological accounts. Here, I will show these accounts, and make an analysis
understood by me.
The definition refers to the sense that some one has or who they are, of what is most important
about them. Important sources of identities are likely to include nationality, ethnicity, sexuality
(homosexual, heterosexual, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Symbolic Interactionism
Symbolic Interactionism sees the actor as more active in acquiring an identity. It claim to society
has a range of diverse social roles and identities (e.g. the roles of students and teachers). Every role
has certain behaviours, and certain rules. However, these roles can change. Symbolic Interactionism
sees identities as more flexible.
The issue is interactionists underestimate the range of human behaviours which are restricted. The
fact is not so ideal as what they image. Things can be changed, but not all the things can, or not all
the people can change certain things. What s more, they ignore the identity of structural reasons
(e.g. the unequal right between male and female) in shaping the society.
Marxism
Marxism points most societies are based on exploitation of some groups by others. Those who own
the mean of production (ruling class) exploit those who work for them, who lack the means to
produce things themselves (subject class). (Haralambos and Holborn, Sociology Themes and
Perspectives AS and A Level Student Handbook , chapter 1, p2)
Marxists do not agree with functionalism and interactionism for underestimating the importance of
power to impose roles. They emphasizes the class differences in people acquiring their identities,
but ignore other important source of identity such as, gender, sexuality, age, etc.
Moreover, Marxism

Born To Run Analysis
In hopes of getting more likes, our society craves to post on Twitter, Facebook, and/or Instagram
about how our life is on the road to success and happiness. Yes, that could be one of you.
Acceptance and love have been hard to come by nowadays. Bluntly put, our advanced society is a
complete paradox to what it aims to do keeping our mind, body, and spirit healthy. It seems that our
advancement in the systems of technology, health, justice, and everything in between has been
causing more harm than good. According to the non fiction text, Born to Run, McDougall
describes how the Tarahumaras seem to grasp the essence of our advanced societal problems with
such simplicity. We believe our knowledge is what perpetuates us forward, yet that knowledge...

This is best seen in McDougall s injury, such as being administered a cortisone shot to fix a
patient s foot with plantar fasciitis, and the high caliber doctors telling him to stop running to
prevent knee degeneration because he s just not cut out for it. Unfortunately, our knowledge based
system has it wrong. A lot of what our advanced society is teaching us is a contorted reality
contrived on the basis of our pride in science, our pride in medicine, and our pride in everything we
do. We follow the goddess of knowledge and believe those of credibility to be the only solution
to our health problems. When you step back and look at the big picture, we are nowhere near the
achievements of the Tarahumara. Although primal, the Tarahumara do not face the wrath that of
an advanced society incurs. Tarahumaras do not experience vast array of problems we do, such
as obesity, plantar fasciitis, knee pains, crime, theft, greed, drug addiction, child abuse, diabetes,
depression, corruption, domestic violence, and war (McDougall 14). We do! We certainly do
because we build our society on knowledge. Advancement in society is mostly manufactured on
this tree of knowledge we call life, and it drives us crazy. Knowledge deceives us from attaining
true freedom in mind, body, and spirit. Now the Tarahumaras, wow, do these guys have it

Emancipation Of Women In Othello Essay
Othello, one of William Shakespeare s classics, is an intricate play written on the life of a soldier
in the sixteenth century, set in the backdrop of a war between Venice and Turkey. This century,
referred to as Renaissance (the era of re birth), marks the emancipation of women. Plays in the
Renaissance featured women who would break the rules and stand up for themselves, their honor.
This was the era where plays portrayed women trying to come to power, overthrowing the concept
of power being only with stereotypical men. All the plays of Shakespeare during this period
featured a tragic heroine; trying to bring justices to themselves may it be Othello, Romeo and Juliet,
Hamlet or King Lear. The female characters in Othello are portrayed... Show more content on

his wife had done. She had to speak against her husband, something which was not common those

Stanley Chernyshevsky s Eyes-Wide Shut
Chernyshevsky states that the first purpose of art is to reproduce nature and life, and this
applies to all works of art without exception (364). Eyes Wide Shut is a movie that was directed by
Stanley Kubrick in 1999. Additionally, it was his last film. He created a film version of Dream
Story, which is a fictional (Schnitzler). The lead roles are played by Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidmanand
Sydney Pollack. The time is set up at Christmas in New York. Stanley Kubrick directs a number of
successful and serious films. There is no doubt that Eyes Wide Shutis one of them. (Kubrick).
Kubrick uses visual aesthetics to express his point of view indirectly. Christmas products is used
to create a holiday atmosphere, which is full of consumption. In addition, mask and costume hide
the identity and individuality of people. Finally, the money that Bill, who is male main character
and acted by Tom Cruise spent, shows he is a customer. These three things convey the theme of
consuming in Eyes Wild Shut. People are shopping to prepare for Christmas; therefore, Christmas
products are related to buying and consuming. In the movie, Christmas products are almost
everywhere especially the Christmas tree. The colorful trees contrast sharply with the main tones
of the movie, which are blue and red. Kubrick keeps reminding audiences that it is Christmas. At
the end of this movie, Bill and Alice who is female main character Nicole Kidman are doing
Christmas shopping with their daughter Helena. In the mall, there are a lot of... Show more content

Pearl Harbor Conspiracy
On December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawaii, was attacked by Japanese torpedo and
bomber planes. This attack took the lives of 2,402 Americans and left around 1,282 people injured.
The surprise attack caused outrage in the American people, news media, government and the world.
The following day President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the nation and United States
Congress, in response to the attack. In that address, the president asked Congress to declare war
on Japan. Congress voted and passed the U.S. Declaration of War on Japan, that very same day.
That was America`s entry into World War II. Previous to this attack Americans were reluctant to
get involved in another world war, the President on the other hand been trying to convince
congress to declare war. So as it turned out a surprise attack was exactly what was needed to get
the American people to unite in supporting joining the war. This idea has led to the Pearl Harbor
Advance Knowledge conspiracy theory. The general idea of this conspiracy theory is that President
Franklin D. Roosevelt and other government officials had knowledge that Japan was planning an
attack before the attack happened. It even goes as far to claim that the government did somethings
to encourage the attack. The reason the president did not take steps to prevent it was that he was
enthusiastic in joining the war. Like with any conspiracy theory there is

Highly Valuable Priviledback
Evaluate yourself on six ways to benefit from highly valuable feedback: 1. Ask for it.
Sometimes in this type of feedback, you find people will bring a criticism that you may need to
work through. I happen to love criticism; I believe it makes me a better person, if nothing else it
makes me think of my process and my actions. Asking for this type of feedback takes courage,
solid character, and good self talk 2. Listen to it. Do not interrupt. In order to process the
feedback you need to be a better listener than speaker, the automatic response is defense,
however, more times that not it is better to just listen carefully and the person criticizing will
reveal the real issue and it usually involves both parties. I have learned over the past few years
that as a leader I am more about listing to the feedback than giving my opinion. Most of the time
(at least in my context) people simply need to process the information more than they need me
cutting them off and making a tense conversation a combative conversation. If I get the cart before

angry. I always keep in mind that just because someone on says a critical statement about me, I
am not the only moving part to the information. I simply do not allow things to simmer or wait, I
take care of them immediately and always tell myself this is not personal. Most of the time, I have

Studies show digital screens harmfully affecting our eyes over a long period of time (Keim). In the
course of human s life now, the majority of the world experiences digital screens which slowly
hinders our vision. Digital light leads to several other problems besides vision such as different

Biological, Psychological, And Socio Environmental Factors
The authors, researchers at the University of Wisconsin Madison and University of Michigan,
studied the biopsychosocial perspective of sexual desire in older adult men and women. The
purpose of the study examined biological, psychological, and socio environmental factors in
understanding sexual desire. They argue, sexual desire is distinct from sexual behavior, and is
the drive behind sexual behavior. Biological changes related to chronic illnesses and
medications, decrease sexual desire and interests in both women and men in older age.
Psychological factors related to negative attitudes about expectations and beliefs of the aging
body. American society idealizes the youthful body images leaving older adults to feel ashamed
of their sexuality. Many older adults engage in sexual activity with a partner. However, desire
decreases with relationship longevity. Furthermore, the loss of a partner may decrease sexual
interests. DeLamater and Moorman reported similar results in subsequent research in 2007. This
study supports the theory that maintaining sexuality intimacy in aging is important to aging
health. The authors, researchers at Boston College and Macalester College, analyzed cross
sectional data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project to explore how sexual
activity affects depression in older adults ages 57 85. Many factors play a role in levels of
sexuality activity such as presence of partner, physiology, and mental health. Aging does not

How Video Games Affected Our Society
Video games have been a part of the American popular culture since the 1970s, when Pong was

analysis of video game trends in our society will reveal their evolution over time, the affects they
have on society, and the consequences they have on society. Video games date back all the way
to the 1940s, when Nim was first introduced to the world at the Worlds Fair. It was not that
popular however. Video games really did not become popular until pong was invented in 1972.

The first is of course the continuous advancement of technology. As technology keeps advancing,
so do our video games, and so do the trends. The newest video game trend are video games where
you put a head set on and it feels like you are in the game. It responds to your head movements, for
example, when you turn right, you look right in the game. People in our society always want
something new. They get bored with things very quickly, which also causes new trends.
Companies look to use this advancement in technology to come up with new video games so
they can make more money. Right now in America, consumers are spending 22 billion dollars a
year on video games. If companies can keep making more advancements and creating new
trends, Americans will keep spending more and more money, which means more profits for the
companies. It is a continuous circle that may never stop. And why this happens, is simply
because Americans cannot get enough video games. Americans love to play video games as I

video games, you can do things you can never do in real life, such as blow up a building or fly a

Nanotechnology And Its Effects On Our Future
Imagine that, in the near future, you need surgery in your lungs. Currently, it would be very
invasive and very risky to do surgery on your lungs. But, with advances in nanotechnology, the
surgery could be quick and painless. There could be almost no risk attributed to surgeries like
nowadays, and it would not be nearly as invasive either. Nanotechnologyis something that isn t
necessarily new, it has been talked about and worked upon for many years. However, there have
been advances in this field that have led to new and also exciting discoveries. Surgeries, for

however, a dark side of this. While there are many innovations that have launched this technology

technology could do more harm than it could good. There are many pros, but there are even more
cons to this technology. This reason is why so many people say that we should not be pushing this
technology as far and as hard as we currently are. If there is not a change in the rapid growth of
this technology, there could be some undesirable consequences. There is a nearly universal belief

as give you ideas to rebuild credit after bankruptcy. Ask family and friends for recommendations
of lawyers they have used. Firsthand experience is one of the best ways to choose a lawyer.
Family and friends can give you a better understanding of how a particular lawyer works. If none
of your family and friends has had experience with a bankruptcy law firm, then you can contact
bar associations in your local area. They usually have referral panels of consumer bankruptcy
lawyers. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau because they keep track of any
complaints filed against bankruptcy law firms. A bankruptcy attorney can help you effectively file
personal bankruptcy. However, it is important that you find one that can work well with you and
has a clear understanding of the bankruptcy laws for your state. By following some simple

The Challenge Of Cultural Relativism By James Rachels
In The Challenge of Cultural Relativism , James Rachels presents six claims that have been made
by cultural relativists. One of the six claims that Rachels presents in section 2.2 of the article is
that different societies have different moral codes. I believe that Rachels thinks this claim is true.
Section 2.1 of the article does a good job at explaining this idea. In this section, Rachels gives
several examples of the differences that can be found in moral codes of different people groups
throughout time. One of the specific examples he mentions is the different burial rituals of the
Greeks and the Callatians. The Greeks perform a ritual that includes burning the dead. The Callatian
ritual consists of eating the dead. The Greeks and Callatians, while encountering each other, both
stated that the other s ritual was inhumane. This disagreement, according to Cultural Relativism, is
okay and to be expected because the two moral codes come from two drastically different
societies. A modern example of this claim is that up until recently in China, small feet were
praised and larger feet were frowned upon for women. Radical efforts to prevent women s feet
from growing included foot binding. This method of prevention caused women to constantly be in
pain. Women s foot size in the United States isn t emphasized like the way it used to be in China.
Therefore, citizens of the United States believe that Chinese foot binding was a barbaric method,
while people in China would think

John C Calhoun Political Analysis
John C. Calhoun was born in Abbeville, South Carolina on March 18, 1782. When he was 17 he
dropped out of high school and worked on the family farm to help his parents. In 1804 he finished
his studies and obtained a degree from Yale University. After he got his degree, he started studying
law at Tapping Reeve Law School and was admitted into the South Carolinabar in1807, later
abandoning his practice, when he got married to his cousin, Floride Calhoun, to become a planter
statesman. In 1808, Calhoun was elected to be South Carolina s state legislature, only staying in
this position for a year. In 1812, Calhoun introduced the declaration of war against Britain. From

During the election, with John Adams support, he ran unopposed as vice president and was elected
for another term in the following election, under President Andrew Jackson. In 1828, the same year
Calhoun was re elected, he founded the Nullifier Party in response to the Tariff of Abominations
passed by Congress in the same year. The Nullifier Party was supportive of states having the ability
to nullify rules those states found to be unconstitutional. After Calhoun s resignation from Vice
Presidency he was immediately elected into the United States Senate from South Carolina, where
he served until 1843, and then he returned from 1845 1850. During his second time in the Senate,
Calhoun opposed the Mexican American War and California s admission as a free state, knowing
that if California became a free state the scale of power would tip and the Union would eventually
abolish slavery. For the last years of his life he fought against northern abolitionists and died of

The Ability Of Communicate Through Writing
Summary of the project:
The ability to communicate through writing has been imperative to meet various needs such as
social, professional and academic needs (Mahendran, 2013). However, writing is a difficult and a
complicated skill especially for students who are non native of a particular language, which makes
it hard for them to meet the writing needs in academic domains particularly. This difficulty is
attributed to the fact that writing comes at last as a skill in terms of its acquirement for both native
and second language speakers of the language (Hamp and Heasly, 2006). For the sake of facilitating
the acquirement of this important skill, effective and new approaches to teaching are to be
incorporated in the classroom practices. One of these approaches is Systemic Functional Linguistics
, which views language as a set of systems, each of which offers people choices to express
meanings (Bloor Bloor, 1995). This project is two case studies of an EFL classroom that is based
on Saudi Arabia with the intention of improving the academic writing concentrating on two
persuasive genre writings, which are discussion and exposition genres. To do so, SFL is employed
with its powerful analytical tools that are helpful in educational contexts. In particular, these
analytical tools examine written language in the way sentences and clauses are organized as well
as the way sentences are joined together to make a whole text (Coffin, 1996; Feez, 1998; Rothery,

The United States And Western Europe
Today, there are a large number of foreign people fleeing their country of origins to arrive into first
world nations such as the United States and Western Europe. The news have been publishing a
migration crisis , which is many people from the middle east and other unstable countries e.g. Syria,
Iraq, Palestine, Eritrea etc. and arriving in western Europein almost millions each month and
thousands each day. The reason for that is because their countries of origins are not safe places

In coastal countries where migrants set foot there are advertisement posted telling the people to
turn back from Europe and go home. Many European nations are doing this because they have
already settled in millions of migrants and cannot settle in anymore. This mass migration crisis all
began after the uprising in Middle Eastern countries, the civil war in Syria was the byproduct of
the uprising plus with the assistance of foreign help. However other countries where migrants are
fleeing from have a different issues causing many people to run away.
For instance the migrants that are fleeing for unstable nations are not just form Syria but also
from Iraq. In 2001 the U.S. began sending troops to Iraq to fight of terrorists. Instead the U.S.
occupation in Iraq has caused turmoil and instability. Another country that people are fleeing

Active Gear, Inc saw it has a possible opportunity for them to acquire it. The footwear industry is
very competitive, with low growth and stable profit margins. AGI is very profitable but it is
smaller than its competitors, which is becoming a disadvantage. Therefore, Liedtke believes that if
they takeover Mercury will double AGI s revenue, increase it s leverage with contract manufactures

It is important to look at it because it is a measure that investors can use to evaluate the financial
health of the company. However Liedkte being more conservative he says that the combined
businesses could achieve and EBIT of 9 % and when looking at the projections for Mercury from
2007 2011 we can see a growth in earnings. So then what are the cash flows if Liedtke thinks the
combined businesses will have a revenue growth of 2% in year 2011 considering we discounting
back to 2006. We need to calculate the Free Cash Flow (FCF) in order to determine if the Net
profit Value is positive or negative. Knowing that we will know if the acquisition should be
undertaken. When looking at the excel sheet we can see that the NVP using the discount rate
given by the case 7.65 % with a growth rate of 3 % gives us an NVP= $ 275,399.78. Therefore
the NVP s value compares the value of the investment made today to the same value of the amount

Adult Education Policy Analysis
In terms of policy development, an educational issue that is always changing each year is adult
education. The adult leaner can be one the trickiest populations to educate, because adults come
from many different backgrounds. In my opinion, adult education starts when a student beings their
educational career in undergrad, and continues with post bachelor degrees, work place
environments, and even at home.
According to Kristen Caschera, the three most significant challenges an adult learner faces are
balancing school and life responsibilities, accessibility, and cost (Cashera, 2013). This is an issue
in policy development because in order to run an effective educational program, it must need to
meet the needs of an adult learn, focusing on

Listening is an essential part of dialogue. If properly exercise, it allows us to absorb information

How Did Queen Elizabeth 1 Affect Society

In fact, the first notable shift wouldn t come until the mid 1700s when the west started moving

Demetrio Macias Characters In The Underdogs

In The Underdogs written by Mariano Azuela, the protagonist, Demetrio Macias is symbolized as
the fuel of the Mexican Revolution. Heroes like Macias gave hope to the oppressed people of
Mexico by fighting for what they felt they truly deserved, but, ironically, later becomes what he
was fighting against. He does show great leadership and determination to oppress Pancho Villa s
army. Pancho Villa, the dictator of Mexico during this revolutionary time, also shows prolific
leadership qualities and care for his people; much like Demetrio Macias. However, at times Villa
can be a ferocious general who destroyed villiages and killed innocent victims, he shows his
compassion who helped those in need and rescued orphans providing them with food, education,
and a home. Pancho Villa was a leader who only asked for your loyalty and trust, but was cruel
when people tried to oppose him. Venustiano Carranza was another great leader that was a natural

During the Ordovician Age, the Earth had milder climates than before. The air in the atmosphere

Reflection Paper On Inequality
The lecture presented in class (Inequality in Education and Employment) was a particularly
salient topic for me. As part of my Bachelor s degree, in Philosophy, I was required to present and
defend a thesis. My thesis was a defense of democracy from the problems of distributive justice.
Over the course of two years, I spent countless hours reading, writing, and debating the fine points
on inequality. Therefore, the subject matter is not something new for me, nor do I think there is a
simple solution.
Reflecting on the information from the lecture, there were various aspects of inequality that
coincided with my research; however, there were two areas that I thought required further
consideration and contemplation. First, nowhere in the slides, in the lecture, nor in the discussions,
was justice mentioned. I find that particularly odd as the preliminary point of any inquiry into
inequality should start from the structural foundations of equality viz., justice.
Second, I was slightly confused by the slide (23) titled Workers with Disabilities Earn Less Than
Their Peers . The slide indicated that people with disabilities (PWDs) earned 37% less pay than

that the 37% figure did not match what was on the graph. This forced me to do some quick math
on what was represented. According to the values on the slide, the actual wage gap was 21%.
While this is still significant, it is not

INTRODUCTION
Christ is the central person in Christian discipleship. Without Christ, Christianity would not exist
and there would be no followers of Christ. To be true followers of Christ, believers must be
willing to learn of the ways and teachings of Christ. Christ is central to Christian discipleship
because He is the teacher of His disciples. Through the Holy Spirit and Word of God, Jesus Christ
calls His disciples to Him and then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
God disciplines those whom He loves and uses those whom follow His commandments. Jesus
was hanged on a cross and crucified so that we would have the opportunity to be saved. He
suffered for us, so we should take up our cross on a daily basis and follow Him. Christians must
submit to Christ in order to be used by Christ. When a person submits to Christ, the Holy Spirit
will empower him to be used of God. If a person does not submit to Christ, then the Holy Spirit
will be quenched and the Christian will be disciplined by God. Disciples of Christ do not receive
salvation because they obey God, but they obey God and submit to Christ because they have
salvation (Rogers, Adrian, 2005). Jesus told the disciples that if they call him Lord they must
do what he commands (Matthew 7:22). To be a disciple of Christ, we must submit to Jesus and
trust that He is our Lord and Savior. We must have faith in Him and look to Him as our guide.
Disciples of Christ should obey Jesus because God is not a man, but a sovereign God who has
every right to command His disciples. Christ is not just a sovereign God, but also a saving God
who suffered on a cross so that humans could receive salvation. Disciples of Christ who are
saved by grace are not their own, but bought with a price that Jesus paid on the cross. Dietrich
Bonhoeffer: The disciples are called blessed because they have obeyed the call of Jesus.2 To be a
disciple of Christ, we must

Essay on Racism in Disney Films
What images come to mind as one reflects upon his or her childhood? Playgrounds, blackboards,
and soccer balls may be among the fondest of memories. Yet, for many, mermaids swim their
thoughts, princesses get swept off their feet, and lions roar to their royal place in the animal
kingdom. Disney films have captivated the American culture for years and have become a pivotal
part of popular culture as well as a form of education. However, these films have devoured the
youth of America and, in the process; have perpetuated an institutionally racist society based on
harsh stereotypes. Minorities are often underrepresented, and even completely left out, of many
Disney films such as Dumbo (1941), The Lion King(1994), Aladdin (1992), and... Show more

According to Carl Hiaasen, The secret weapon is trust. Disney is the most trusted brand name in
the history of marketing. It hooks us when we re little and never lets go; this unshakeable faith
that Disney is the best at knowing what s best. (13) It is time that this myth be shattered. As far
back as 1946, racial stereotyping of African Americans has been evident in Disney films. For
instance, in the American classic Dumbo, the crows depict the typical southern African American
with a slow pattern of speech. In Jungle Book (1967) the monkeys with African American voices
are jiving in a crazy manner because they will never be real men and will always be animals. One
of the most tragic examples of this racism can be seen in the movie Tarzan. In the original making
of the movie, the white man comes to the rescue and tames all of the animals and natives. However,
in the new Disney version of Tarzan (1999), the blacks that obviously inhabit Africa were
completely eliminated and replaced by gorillas with African American voices. African American
children whom view these films have no choice but to resort to relating to these often unintelligent,
inferior animals because that is where they hear themselves. In Mickey Mouse Monopoly, children
were asked if they could think of any black characters in Disney films, sadly they came up short of
a single one. It

Cardiovascular Disease, Atherosclerosis Essay
One source of great mortality and morbidity in Europe and North America is the cardiovascular
disease, Atherosclerosis. It is recognized as a chronic inflammatory disease of the intermediate
and large arteries characterized by the thickening of the arterial wall and is the primary cause of
coronary and cerebrovascular heart disease (Wilson, 2005). It accounts for 4.35 million deaths in
Europe and 35% death in the UK each year. Mortality rate are generally higher in men than pre
menopausal woman. Past the menopause, a woman s risk is similar to a man s (George and
Johnston, 2010). Clinical trials have confirmed that lipid accumulation, endothelial dysfunction, cell
proliferation, inflammation matrix alteration and foam cell formation are... Show more content on

Macrophage which is now foam like accumulates on the blood vessel to form visible fatty streak
which then undergoes apoptosis. The plaque continues to grow and hardens narrowing the arteries.
This ruptures and causes a blood clot which limits the flow of oxygen rich blood to the body
causing a heart attack, stroke or even death. Factors that are known to predispose to atherosclerosis
are physical inactivity, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, cigarette smoking and hypertension which
increase the chances by two fold by damaging the vascular endothelium. Experimental studies have
just shown that excess blood levels of iron can lead to atherosclerosis (Guyton and Hall, 2011).
2.0 Molecular and Cell based therapies
Presently, the treatment strategies used are risk factor modification, conventional pharmacology
and surgical revascularization. These strategies have hitherto not been of enormous solution as the
disease progression still result in recurrent symptoms. This has now led to the exploitation of
advances in comprehending the vascular biology of atherogenesis to introduce novel cell and
molecular based therapies. The application of immunomodulation, lipid lowering agents like statins,
gene transfer, antisense technology and so on has resulted in new therapeutic strategies to interrupt
cell proliferation and disorder of the vessel wall. In this essay, immunomudulation and lipid
lowering agent shall be discussed.

Cacao Influence On Mayan Culture
At first consideration, chocolate and the Maya peoples do not appear to be related in any
manner, but this could not be farther from the truth. Cacao, the tree from which chocolate is
processed, is heavily intertwined in the religious and secular lives of the Maya, in the past as well
as the present. Chocolate, as we know it today, too was born from the Maya and their contact with
the Europeans, perhaps the only good thing to come from the interactions. Thanks to the
Europeans, cacao has impacted the rest of the world in as great a manner as it impacted the Maya.
The Maya were, and are, a group of Mesoamericans whose settlements spanned from Mexico to
Belize, beginning as early as 1500 B.C.E (Maya People). According to a display at the ki
Xocolatil museum, the Maya timeline can be split into six different sections: Ancient Classical
(250 600 C.E.), Recent Classical (600 800 C.E.), Late Classical (800 1000 C.E.), Ancient Post ...

Its importance was initially lost on the Spanish, who first encountered the Maya in 1502. The first
conquistador to focus on the YucatГЎn peninsula was Francisco de Montejo, in 1527. He was a
violent conqueror, at one point allegedly letting his hunting dogs hunt and eat two natives
following his conquering and rebuilding of the Maya city of T ho into Merida, now the capitol of
the YucatГЎn state. Montejo and his men were vicious in their dealings with natives, and Fray
Diego de Landa recounts in his An Account of the Things of YucatГ

beautiful young native women, not for their beauty, but to make a statement that the women meant
nothing to the Spanish men. In one case of resistance, de Landa recalls seeing women hung from

Ida B Wells-Bennett Summary
Ida B. Wells Barnett dedicated her life to social justice and equality. She devoted her tremendous
energies to building the foundations of African American progress in business, politics, and law.
Wells Barnett was a key participant in the formation of the National Association of Colored
Women as well as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She
spoke eloquently in support of Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association.
The legacies of these organizations have been tremendous and her contribution to each was timely
and indespensible. But no cause challenged the courage and integrity of Ida B. Wells Barnett as
much as her battle against mob violence and the terror of lynchingat the end of... Show more content

The great majority of people lynched between 1882 and 1930 were black. During that period
there were almost 4800 recorded lynchings in the United States. There were many more, no
doubt, but we know about 4800. 3400 victims of this mob justice were black. The period from
1889 to 1893 accounted for the worst years. 579 blacks were lynched as opposed to 260 whites.
That is a ration of 2.2 blacks lynched for every white. This is a significant difference already, but
only part of the story. By the end of the century the racial nature of lynching had revealed itself,
completely and unmistakably. Between 1899 and 1903, 543 people were lynched in the United
States men and women. Of that number only 27 were white. That is a ratio of 22 blacks lynched
for every white.
The numbers make a compelling case, but they do not tell the entire story because by themselves
they reveal nothing of what lynching really involved. It was widely believed that lynching was
spontaneous thing sudden and emotional acts of revenge committed by irrational mobs. But we
know now that lynchings were often planned out in advance, and frequently with the sympathy and
cooperation of local leaders and law enforcement officials. In some cases lynchings were even
advertised. Days before they occurred men would move through neighborhoods and from town to
town, distributing flyers by hand and sometimes printing announcements in newspapers.

Corruption In The Catholic Church
During the time of corruption in the Catholic Church, Protestantism was growing because of the
influences of politics, corruption within the Catholic Church, and Renaissance ideas. Many
Catholics were unhappy with the Catholic Church because of all the corruption in the church, and
they wanted reformation. The Catholic Churchwouldn t be able to stop the growth of Protestantism.
One of the reasons Protestantism spread was because of the influence of politics, such as support
from princes and the Treaty of Augsburg. When Luther began to break from the Catholic Church,
He called upon the German princes to overthrow the papacy in Germany and establish a reformed
German church. (438) This is the reason the German princes started to support the spread of
Protestantism. The rulers of Germany were motivated by any religious feeling which made them
take control of the churches in their territory. This made the princes/rulers have the last say in any
decisions not the Pope. Religious warfare in Germany ended with the Treaty of Augsburg. The
Treaty of Augsburg in 1555 brought along change in Protestantism, it made... Show more content on

Martin Luther made these problems obvious when he nailed his 95 theses to the church doors. In
Luther s 95 theses, he attacked the selling and buying of indulgences, absenteeism, simony, and
pluralism. All of the problems lead to corruption, and the corruption lead to people changing over
to Protestantism. The Protestant teaching was justification by faith alone, salvation comes only
through faith in Christ not good works. Buying a slip of paper is not the way to get into Heaven.
There was corruption with the Popes in the 1520 s. The Popes were spending too much money on
Renaissance Art and Architecture to make the church look good. They were too concerned with
Italian politics. People were not happy and they wanted to

Laurie Thorp Ethnography
Laurie Thorp is trying to share how she spent four years at Jonesville Elementary School in the
Midwest with alot of children that have low income families. She is trying to share how she
worked with them to cultivate a garden. She used a lot photos, poetry, sketches, journal entries, and
illustrations and anecdotes by the children. she explained how she taught the children in this
community about learning from the environment, nutrition, nature, and how the land can be
developed. Another purpose of Laurie Thorp s ethnography is to make people understand her
revelation to other people; she is trying to make people understand her as a person that is writing
from a particular position at specific times. Thorps said, I look around and I see... Show more

She said, The chasm of distance that once stood between us was gone, all because of that
hyacinth. That exquisite little hyacinth. He pulled it out from under dad s garden, sealed in a
ziploc bag. Yes, a ziploc bag with his precious offering of love and life inside. His offering
required no explanation. This is the beginning of her ethnography that shows what a garden
symbolises to Laurie Thorp, and how it can bring peace and unity to everyone. She believes that
a garden can bring people together, which can be a solution to our woundedness. I feel like she
is also trying to show her deep abiding connection to the earth. One of the places where healing
took place in the story of the garden is when Laurie Thorp tried to convince the teachers at
Jonesville elementary school teachers that her research is solid in page 19. At first when she
was trying to present her idea to the teachers earlier in the book, she was not successful, and the
researchers seemed uninterested, but in page 19 when Laurie Thorp managed to explain the
benefit the garden can have as a whole, new voices started to emerge like gloria that called her

  • 3. Natural Transcendence In Into The Wild By Jon Krakauer Natural transcendence is a call that not all people feel, however for those who do hear it, it is nearly impossible to ignore. The great outdoors represent so much to so many and is a gift that so many reap the benefits of. Some people like the danger and power of nature, while others like the placid serenity that allows them to be fully at peace. The novel Into The Wildby Jon Krakauer is all about transcendence through natureand the lessons learned through that type of eternal peace. The novel is about a young man, Chris McCandless, who after completing his education and seemed to be set up for future success, decided to leave everything behind and travel into the Alaskan wildernessin search for more meaning and connection to nature. On his journey to the wild he encountered many different people that taught him many lessons about other perspectives and lenses for which to view life, however these new connections he made were not enlightening enough and he still chose to venture into the Alaskan wilderness. Mccandless traveled into the wilderness and left his life behind because he did not feel as though the traditional world was a close enough connection to total transcendence and inner peace. Reading Into The Wild brought me an appreciation for the knowledge and developing experiences gained by separating oneself from society to experience and appreciate nature. Exposing myself to nature to find peace is something that I have done since I was an adolescent. There has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Framework For Success In Postsecondary Writing We live in a world dominated by language. Whether it be spoken, written, or read the words that we are surrounded by influence us all in different ways. We are, in reality, byproducts of what we read, write, and talk about. This being said, our linguistic history tells a lot about us. As the language I was exposed to followed a natural progression and evolved, so did my linguistic capabilities. My development of the eight habits of the mind described in the Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writinghighlights this linguistic progression. My true linguistic history takes off when I learned how to read. My mother used to gather my siblings and I at the foot of her bed every night and read us books. I really enjoyed the books but the pace we read at, one chapter a night, was painstakingly slow and was not curbing my hunger to find out what happened next. I began to read the books on my own, focusing on mythology and fantasies. Reading mythological stories told through the perspectives of cultures and ideas foreign to me helped me develop a sense of openness. I found that because of this background it was easier to appreciate viewpoints different from my own. And because the stories are mostly fables told by each culture to teach lessons I further cultivated my critical thinking skills. Seeking to understand the Whys behind the actually works, I read to understand the purpose of the different author s messages and purposes. I was find joy in reading things for reasons ... • 5. Haraway’s A Cyborg Manifesto Essay Donna J. Haraway s A Cyborg Manifesto Haraway s provocative proposal of envisioning the cyborg as a myth of political identity embodies the search for a code of displacement of the hierarchical dualisms of naturalized identities (CM, 175), and thus for the breakdown of the logic of phallogocentrism and of the unity of the Western idealized self. Haraway defines the cyborg as a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature of social reality as well as a creature of fiction (CM, 149). Her argument is introduced as an effort to build an ironic political myth faithful to feminism, socialism, and materialism (CM, 149). She claims blasphemy and irony as her vantage tools. Cyborgs are technological constructs and thus deny the logic of reproduction; they rather mock the masculinist reproductive dream (CM, 152). They have no memory of a primary state of innocence; they conceive of no Father s saving through the restoration of a garden they don t recognize the Garden of Eden in that they do not re member the cosmos (CM, 151). As they build no sense of community on the model of the organic family, they live outside the oedipal project they are wary of holism, but needy for connection (CM, 151). Though the offsprings of militarism, patriarchal capitalism and state socialism, they are illegitimate offsprings and thus unfaithful to their origins. The late twentieth century scientific culture in the United States has experienced three crucial boundary breakdowns: the boundary between human and animal is thoroughly breached the boundary between human and machine has become leaky and ambiguous the boundary between physical and non physical has become very imprecise in that the experience of fluidity and lightness made possible by signals and electromagnetic waves renders the physical both material and opaque, very near to quintessence. When boundaries are transgressed, the transcendent authorization of interpretation is lost, and with it the ontology grounding Western epistemology (CM, 153). If cyborg myth is about the transgression of boundaries, as Haraway seems to posit, it envisions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

IRC §170(f)(16)(A) states that an individual is not allowed a deduction for any contribution of clothing or household item unless such item is in good used condition or better. One of a few women to gain any sort of power in ancient Rome let alone the status that Livia ended up having near the end of her time. Livia herself is very controversial and is often depicted in one of two ways in most available sources. The first is that she was a very manipulative woman, that her caring housewife appearance and manner was all a façade and that she was responsible for the deaths surrounding the heirs to the throne paving the way for her son Tiberius to become emperor. However, these roles can change. Symbolic Interactionism sees identities as more flexible. The issue is interactionists underestimate the range of human behaviours which are restricted. The fact is not so ideal as what they image. Things can be changed, but not all the things can, or not all the people can change certain things. What s more, they ignore the identity of structural reasons (e.g. the unequal right between male and female) in shaping the society. Yes, that could be one of you. Acceptance and love have been hard to come by nowadays. Bluntly put, our advanced society is a complete paradox to what it aims to do keeping our mind, body, and spirit healthy. It seems that our advancement in the systems of technology, health, justice, and everything in between has been causing more harm than good. Unfortunately, our knowledge based system has it wrong. A lot of what our advanced society is teaching us is a contorted reality contrived on the basis of our pride in science, our pride in medicine, and our pride in everything we do. We follow the goddess of knowledge and believe those of credibility to be the only solution to our health problems. When you step back and look at the big picture, we are nowhere near the achievements of the Tarahumara. Although primal, the Tarahumara do not face the wrath that of an advanced society incurs. Tarahumaras do not experience vast array of problems we do, such as obesity, plantar fasciitis, knee pains, crime, theft, greed, drug addiction, child abuse, diabetes, depression, corruption, domestic violence, and war (McDougall 14). We do! We certainly do because we build our society on knowledge. Advancement in society is mostly manufactured on this tree of knowledge we call life, and it drives us crazy. Plays in the Renaissance featured women who would break the rules and stand up for themselves, their honor. Carlos Tovar Professor Couey English 103 Oct. 15, 2015 Pearl Harbor Conspiracy On December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawaii, was attacked by Japanese torpedo and bomber planes. This attack took the lives of 2,402 Americans and left around 1,282 people injured. The surprise attack caused outrage in the American people, news media, government and the world. The following day President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the nation and United States Congress, in response to the attack. In that address, the president asked Congress to declare war on Japan. Congress voted and passed the U.S. Declaration of War on Japan, that very same day. That was America`s entry into World War II. Previous to this attack Americans were reluctant to get involved in another world war, the President on the other hand been trying to convince congress to declare war. One of the six claims that Rachels presents in section 2.2 of the article is that different societies have different moral codes. I believe that Rachels thinks this claim is true. Section 2.1 of the article does a good job at explaining this idea. In this section, Rachels gives several examples of the differences that can be found in moral codes of different people groups throughout time. One of the specific examples he mentions is the different burial rituals of the Greeks and the Callatians. The Greeks perform a ritual that includes burning the dead. The Callatian ritual consists of eating the dead. The Greeks and Callatians, while encountering each other, both stated that the other s ritual was inhumane. This disagreement, according to Cultural Relativism, is okay and to be expected because the two moral codes come from two drastically different societies. A modern example of this claim is that up until recently in China, small feet were praised and larger feet were frowned upon for women. Radical efforts to prevent women s feet from growing included foot binding. This method of prevention caused women to constantly be in pain. Women s foot size in the United States isn t emphasized like the way it used to be in China. Therefore, citizens of the United States believe that Chinese foot binding was a barbaric method, while people in China would think ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. The Ability Of Communicate Through Writing Summary of the project: The ability to communicate through writing has been imperative to meet various needs such as social, professional and academic needs (Mahendran, 2013). However, writing is a difficult and a complicated skill especially for students who are non native of a particular language, which makes it hard for them to meet the writing needs in academic domains particularly. This difficulty is attributed to the fact that writing comes at last as a skill in terms of its acquirement for both native and second language speakers of the language (Hamp and Heasly, 2006). For the sake of facilitating the acquirement of this important skill, effective and new approaches to teaching are to be incorporated in the classroom practices. One of these approaches is Systemic Functional Linguistics , which views language as a set of systems, each of which offers people choices to express meanings (Bloor Bloor, 1995). This project is two case studies of an EFL classroom that is based on Saudi Arabia with the intention of improving the academic writing concentrating on two persuasive genre writings, which are discussion and exposition genres. To do so, SFL is employed with its powerful analytical tools that are helpful in educational contexts. In particular, these analytical tools examine written language in the way sentences and clauses are organized as well as the way sentences are joined together to make a whole text (Coffin, 1996; Feez, 1998; Rothery, ... Second, I was slightly confused by the slide (23) titled Workers with Disabilities Earn Less Than Their Peers . Without Christ, Christianity would not exist and there would be no followers of Christ. To be true followers of Christ, believers must be willing to learn of the ways and teachings of Christ. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... God disciplines those whom He loves and uses those whom follow His commandments. Jesus was hanged on a cross and crucified so that we would have the opportunity to be saved. He suffered for us, so we should take up our cross on a daily basis and follow Him. Christians must submit to Christ in order to be used by Christ. When a person submits to Christ, the Holy Spirit will empower him to be used of God. If a person does not submit to Christ, then the Holy Spirit will be quenched and the Christian will be disciplined by God. Disciples of Christ do not receive salvation because they obey God, but they obey God and submit to Christ because they have salvation (Rogers, Adrian, 2005). Jesus told the disciples that if they call him Lord they must do what he commands (Matthew 7:22). To be a disciple of Christ, we must submit to Jesus and trust that He is our Lord and Savior. We must have faith in Him and look to Him as our guide. Disciples of Christ should obey Jesus because God is not a man, but a sovereign God who has every right to command His disciples. Christ is not just a sovereign God, but also a saving God who suffered on a cross so that humans could receive salvation. Disciples of Christ who are saved by grace are not their own, but bought with a price that Jesus paid on the cross. Dietrich Bonhoeffer: The disciples are called blessed because they have obeyed the call of Jesus.2 To be a disciple of Christ, we must ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Essay on Racism in Disney Films What images come to mind as one reflects upon his or her childhood? Playgrounds, blackboards, and soccer balls may be among the fondest of memories. Yet, for many, mermaids swim their thoughts, princesses get swept off their feet, and lions roar to their royal place in the animal kingdom. Disney films have captivated the American culture for years and have become a pivotal part of popular culture as well as a form of education. However, these films have devoured the youth of America and, in the process; have perpetuated an institutionally racist society based on harsh stereotypes. Minorities are often underrepresented, and even completely left out, of many Disney films such as Dumbo (1941), The Lion King(1994), Aladdin (1992), and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Carl Hiaasen, The secret weapon is trust. Disney is the most trusted brand name in the history of marketing. It hooks us when we re little and never lets go; this unshakeable faith that Disney is the best at knowing what s best. (13) It is time that this myth be shattered. As far back as 1946, racial stereotyping of African Americans has been evident in Disney films. For instance, in the American classic Dumbo, the crows depict the typical southern African American with a slow pattern of speech. In Jungle Book (1967) the monkeys with African American voices are jiving in a crazy manner because they will never be real men and will always be animals. One of the most tragic examples of this racism can be seen in the movie Tarzan. In the original making of the movie, the white man comes to the rescue and tames all of the animals and natives. However, in the new Disney version of Tarzan (1999), the blacks that obviously inhabit Africa were completely eliminated and replaced by gorillas with African American voices. African American children whom view these films have no choice but to resort to relating to these often unintelligent, inferior animals because that is where they hear themselves. In Mickey Mouse Monopoly, children were asked if they could think of any black characters in Disney films, sadly they came up short of a single one. It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Cardiovascular Disease, Atherosclerosis Essay One source of great mortality and morbidity in Europe and North America is the cardiovascular disease, Atherosclerosis. It is recognized as a chronic inflammatory disease of the intermediate and large arteries characterized by the thickening of the arterial wall and is the primary cause of coronary and cerebrovascular heart disease (Wilson, 2005). It accounts for 4.35 million deaths in Europe and 35% death in the UK each year. Mortality rate are generally higher in men than pre menopausal woman. Past the menopause, a woman s risk is similar to a man s (George and Johnston, 2010). The plaque continues to grow and hardens narrowing the arteries. This ruptures and causes a blood clot which limits the flow of oxygen rich blood to the body causing a heart attack, stroke or even death. Factors that are known to predispose to atherosclerosis are physical inactivity, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, cigarette smoking and hypertension which increase the chances by two fold by damaging the vascular endothelium. Experimental studies have just shown that excess blood levels of iron can lead to atherosclerosis (Guyton and Hall, 2011). 2.0 Molecular and Cell based therapies Presently, the treatment strategies used are risk factor modification, conventional pharmacology and surgical revascularization. These strategies have hitherto not been of enormous solution as the disease progression still result in recurrent symptoms. This has now led to the exploitation of advances in comprehending the vascular biology of atherogenesis to introduce novel cell and molecular based therapies. The application of immunomodulation, lipid lowering agents like statins, gene transfer, antisense technology and so on has resulted in new therapeutic strategies to interrupt cell proliferation and disorder of the vessel wall. In this essay, immunomudulation and lipid lowering agent shall be discussed. 2.1 Immunomodulation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Cacao Influence On Mayan Culture At first consideration, chocolate and the Maya peoples do not appear to be related in any manner, but this could not be farther from the truth. Cacao, the tree from which chocolate is processed, is heavily intertwined in the religious and secular lives of the Maya, in the past as well as the present. Chocolate, as we know it today, too was born from the Maya and their contact with the Europeans, perhaps the only good thing to come from the interactions. Thanks to the Europeans, cacao has impacted the rest of the world in as great a manner as it impacted the Maya. The Maya were, and are, a group of Mesoamericans whose settlements spanned from Mexico to Belize, beginning as early as 1500 B.C.E (Maya People). According to a display at the ki Xocolatil museum, the Maya timeline can be split into six different sections: Ancient Classical (250 600 C.E.), Recent Classical (600 800 C.E.), Late Classical (800 1000 C.E.), Ancient Post ... She devoted her tremendous energies to building the foundations of African American progress in business, politics, and law. Wells Barnett was a key participant in the formation of the National Association of Colored Women as well as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She spoke eloquently in support of Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association. The legacies of these organizations have been tremendous and her contribution to each was timely and indespensible. But no cause challenged the courage and integrity of Ida B. The great majority of people lynched between 1882 and 1930 were black. During that period there were almost 4800 recorded lynchings in the United States. There were many more, no doubt, but we know about 4800. 3400 victims of this mob justice were black. The period from 1889 to 1893 accounted for the worst years. 579 blacks were lynched as opposed to 260 whites. That is a ration of 2.2 blacks lynched for every white. This is a significant difference already, but only part of the story. By the end of the century the racial nature of lynching had revealed itself, completely and unmistakably. Between 1899 and 1903, 543 people were lynched in the United States men and women. Of that number only 27 were white. That is a ratio of 22 blacks lynched for every white. The numbers make a compelling case, but they do not tell the entire story because by themselves they reveal nothing of what lynching really involved. It was widely believed that lynching was spontaneous thing sudden and emotional acts of revenge committed by irrational mobs. But we know now that lynchings were often planned out in advance, and frequently with the sympathy and cooperation of local leaders and law enforcement officials. In some cases lynchings were even advertised. Days before they occurred men would move through neighborhoods and from town to town, distributing flyers by hand and sometimes printing announcements in newspapers. Transportation might be ... • 46. Corruption In The Catholic Church During the time of corruption in the Catholic Church, Protestantism was growing because of the influences of politics, corruption within the Catholic Church, and Renaissance ideas. Many Catholics were unhappy with the Catholic Church because of all the corruption in the church, and they wanted reformation. The Catholic Churchwouldn t be able to stop the growth of Protestantism. One of the reasons Protestantism spread was because of the influence of politics, such as support from princes and the Treaty of Augsburg. When Luther began to break from the Catholic Church, He called upon the German princes to overthrow the papacy in Germany and establish a reformed German church. (438) This is the reason the German princes started to support the spread of Protestantism. The rulers of Germany were motivated by any religious feeling which made them take control of the churches in their territory. This made the princes/rulers have the last say in any decisions not the Pope. Religious warfare in Germany ended with the Treaty of Augsburg. The Protestant teaching was justification by faith alone, salvation comes only through faith in Christ not good works. Buying a slip of paper is not the way to get into Heaven. There was corruption with the Popes in the 1520 s. The Popes were spending too much money on Renaissance Art and Architecture to make the church look good. She is trying to share how she worked with them to cultivate a garden. She used a lot photos, poetry, sketches, journal entries, and illustrations and anecdotes by the children. she explained how she taught the children in this community about learning from the environment, nutrition, nature, and how the land can be developed. That exquisite little hyacinth. He pulled it out from under dad s garden, sealed in a ziploc bag. Yes, a ziploc bag with his precious offering of love and life inside. His offering required no explanation. This is the beginning of her ethnography that shows what a garden symbolises to Laurie Thorp, and how it can bring peace and unity to everyone. She believes that a garden can bring people together, which can be a solution to our woundedness. I feel like she is also trying to show her deep abiding connection to the earth. One of the places where healing took place in the story of the garden is when Laurie Thorp tried to convince the teachers at Jonesville elementary school teachers that her research is solid in page 19. At first when she was trying to present her idea to the teachers earlier in the book, she was not successful, and the researchers seemed uninterested, but in page 19 when Laurie Thorp managed to explain the benefit the garden can have as a whole, new voices started to emerge like gloria that called her you are very typical .
