Organizational Design Essay
Key Concepts of Organizational Design
If an organization is to remain effective as it changes and grows with its environment, managers
must continuously evaluate the way their organizations are designed: for example, the way work is
divided among people and departments, and the way it controls its human, financial, and physical
resources. Organizational design involves difficult choices about how to control that is, coordinate
organizational tasks and motivate the people who perform them to maximize an organization s
ability to create value (Jones, 2004). Maintaining that competitive edge in the snack food industry
can be challenging. Snacks and goodies are considered one of America s favorite past times. Best

Organizational design can provide quicker decision making as some models help accelerate
information flow and streamline decision making. It can also provide personal growth by creating
opportunities for people to take on different and challenging roles within the same organization.
Any work process in the organization can be in scope for organizational design.
Organizational Structures Organizational structure is definitely a must have in an organization.
Organizational structure is designed to form and develop clear lines of order to control an
organization getting the best use of the organizations resources. According to Mahmud Hasan,
some advantages of organization structure are that is easier to control the resources and they can
be rationed and allocated to different units to use them at their more productive use at a micro
level. Another advantage would be that clearly defined reporting lines make it easy for employees
to know whom to report to while reducing redundancies by eliminating extra or unproductive
processes. Other advantages are to streamline processes by giving them more focus and adoptive
nature, reduce cost because the controlling of various cost control centers are controlled at micro
level. Lastly, another advantage is it will help reduce cost because the controlling of various cost
control centers are collected at micro level (Hasan, 2010).

word were the same. Mistakes made were not penalized, the participant was simply told that if
they made a mistake to fix it and move on. The participants not only served as subjects, but also

Civilized, Sense And Sensibility, By Jane Austen
Enjoyable, civilized Sense and Sensibility was the first and one of Jane Austen s novels; she wrote
it in 1795, but it was not published for 16 years. It was written by a young woman who ostensibly
had little experience of the world although her fiction proves she missed the little that occurred on
her domestic stage and the story reflects that orientation, as a mother and her three daughters wait
passively while all the interesting men in the vicinity disappear on unexplained missions to London.
In a modern story, the women would have demanded explanations. What gives Sense and Sensibility
its tension and mystery are that the characters rarely say what they mean. There is great gossip
within the women s sphere, but with men. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edward leaves suddenly for London. The next man to appear is Col. Brandon, played by that
indispensable Alan Rickman. He is attracted to Marianne, but before he can act, she is smitten by
the dashing Willoughby (Greg Wise), who rescues her from a mishap and charms her off her feet.
No sooner have these men appeared when they, too, are called away to London although not before
Col. Brandon has suggested, almost by osmosis, that he knows something unspeakable about his
rival Willoughby.
His secret is the sort of thing that would not be a secret long in the modern age, but in Austen s
time, such things were not spoken of, and Brandon might even allow Marianne to make a disastrous
marriage rather than tell her what her maidenly ears should never hear. This maddening, intriguing
inability to simply blurt out the truth is indispensable to 19th century fiction, and I find it
enormously satisfying. Better the character who leaves us to guess at unspeakable depths than one
who bores us with confessional psychobabble.
The men s departure to London leaves the three daughters and their mother facing an indefinite
future in their sewing circle. So, when a kindly relative proposes a visit to London, they seize
upon it with desperation, and it is there that secrets are revealed and alliances are smashed or
formed. The screenplay, adapted from Austen by Emma Thompson, takes wicked delight

How Does Lee Present Scout s Relationship In To Kill A...
They are your competition, yet they support you. They are your enemy, yet when it comes down to
it you end up fighting side by side. They hate you, yet love you more than words could say. Sibling
relationships are among the most complicated and confusing things to understand. Complex sibling
relationships are seen everywhere, whether you are reading or watching televison. To Kill a
Mockingbird is just one example of literature that contains a siblingdynamic effecting the theme.
Harper Lee skillfully tells of the compelling relationship between Jem and Scout, as it unfolds and
contributes to the strong theme, change versus tradition.
Verbarendse 2
Throughout the publication Jem and Scout mature as people, adapt to changes around them, and
develop a close bond.
The theme, change versus tradition, is ever present throughout the storyline. It is first revealed as
Jem begins to grow up and doesn t have time for Scout. This is evident in the following quotation:
Jem was twelve. He was difficult to live with, inconsistent, moody. His appetite was appalling, and
he told me so many times to stop pestering him... (Lee 153) This causes tension between the two
and shows that change is beginning to take place, breaking up the traditional interactions between

The Treaty Of Versailles And Japan
On January 1919, Saionji Kinmochi, Japan s representative to the Versailles Peace Conference
found himself seated alongside the leaders of the Big Four (Great Britain, France, Italy, and the
United States). This occasion marked Japan s status as one of the world s great powers after the
First World War. More importantly the Treaty of Versailles expanded the Japanese Empire
because it legalized Japanese annexation of former German concessions in China and its colonies
in the South Pacific. Although far from the battlefields of Europe, Japan was an active participant
of the First World War because of the Anglo Japanese Alliance. The alliance called for mutual
support in times of war and Japan answered the call by invading German... Show more content on

In 1858 Britain imposed another treaty called the Anglo Japanese Treaty of Amity and Commerce
which forced Japan to make concessions to Britain such as the opening of the ports of Hakodate,
Kanagawa, and Nagasaki to British commerce. For a while parts of Japan were turned into semi
colonial status, which motivated the Meiji regime to modernize and strengthen Japan. Although
Britain imposed unequal treaties to Japan, it helped Japan to modernize, because Britain played
host to the Japanese delegation that studied the political system, industries, education, and the
militaries of the western world. The military cooperation between the two countries was especially
strong because the leaders of the Imperial Japanese Navy were keen on modelling the organization
after the British Royal Navy. Since the 1870 s, Japanese sailors and officers were sent to the
United Kingdom to study the methods and organization of the Royal Navy. Moreover the newly
formed Imperial Japanese Navy acquired some of its first vessels from Britain. In 1894, a new
treaty called the Anglo Japanese Treaty of Commerce and Navigation was signed which paved the
way for the Anglo Japanese Alliance in 1902. Unlike the previous two treaties between Britain and
Japan, the 1894 treaty was a breakthrough agreement because it heralded the end of the unequal
treaties and the system of extraterritoriality in Japan. British citizens living in Japan were now

Our Socialization Process is Assumed through the Media In America, women are known as the
breadwinners of the family. They go off to work in the morning while their husbands spend the
day cleaning and cooking, some may even have a part time job. Employed or not, the husband
always makes sure their woman is fed after a hard days work. Do these statements sound
ridiculous to you as an American? Are they even feasible? Not in this country, here things are
the complete opposite. How do we know that? Because we have been socialized since day one of
our existence to believe in gender separation, as well as all other aspects of American society. So
who does this to us? Family, friends, schools, and churches are a few. However, in... Show more

Viewers experience the reaction of a person who is rewarded, associate the reward with the
product being advertised and then acquire positive feelings about the product. (Percy
Woodside,1983) An example of this when referring to children has been in hot controversy over
the past few years. Cigarette companies are constantly trying to defend the fact that they try to
lure young kids into the world of smoking through ads. These ads show attractive settings, maybe
a beach with clear blue water and carefree and happy people, maybe a couple, of course with a
cigarette. Kids who see this, observe a carefree, cool lifestyle want these benefits for themselves
and begin smoking. This illustrates how easily children can be convinced. We always thought
cartoons were harmless, animated figures are purely entertainment. However, kids begin with
cartoons that easily socialize and next thing you know, Americas young minds are spending two
to four hours a day viewing #8230; (t.v.). (Spicher Hudak,1997) Studies show that children recall
more information if it s presented verbally and visually such as a t.v. screen.(Walma van der
Molen Van der Voort,1997) In a society where we use the boob tube as both entertainment and
baby sitter, an average 20 hours a week could be fatal. In these harmless cartoons, studies show that
male characters outnumber female characters by about 4:1 and that only a small number of females

Patience In Disney World
It takes great patience and love in order to make the kind of progress that benefits everyone.
(Mashos) Patience is a needed characteristic in today s society. An example of patience would be
my trip to Disney World when I was seven years old. When my parents sprung the surprise that
we would be going to Disney World, the trip itself was still a month and a half out. That month
and a half was the longest of my entire life. I was so excited and it seemed so far away. Finally
the day came and I woke up a ball of sunshine, Everyone wake up! It s Disney day, it s Disney
day! We packed our bags frantically figuring out what was important to bring and what was not,
and then we drove to the airport with the anticipation buzzing in the air. Meanwhile at the airport
we proceeded to wait an additional hour to get through security and wait for the plane to be ready
to board. On the plane we flew for 3 hours and landed in Orlando, Florida, which is a relatively
short drive from Disney World itself. My family and I were... Show more content on

shocking us all into consciousness. Which doesn t particularly work with a seven, five and three
year old. After that fiasco, we were on our way to Animal Kingdom. Animal Kingdom was a
fascinating park, since all three of us children were entirely absorbed by the animals and the
sights and the hundreds if not thousands of people we saw. We had no idea what patience was
until we actually attempted to ride some of those rides. There was a jungle safari ride in which
we could go on a boat on a man made river and hear a story and see some wildlife. We were
weaving back and forth through rope barriers listening to the conversations of people around us as
we dutifully awaited our turn, like soldiers preparing for battle. Meanwhile the actual ride was
maybe ten to fifteen minutes long. The wait was excruciating, but after we got on the ride, we saw
why it was such a tedious wait, the memory later on was worth

The Industrial Revolution And The Public Health Revolution
Since our origin, worldwide human population has steadily been on the rise. We humans
emerged as a species about 200,000 years ago. In geological time, that is really incredibly recent.
Just 10,000 years ago, there were one million of us. By 1800, just over 200 years ago, there were
1 billion of us. By 1960, 50 years ago, there were 3 billion of us. There are now over 7 billion of
us. By 2050, your children, or your children s children, will be living on a planet with at least 9
billion other people. During some time towards the end of this century, there will be at least 10
billion of us. We got to where we are now through a number of civilization and society shaping
events , most notably the agricultural revolution, the scientific revolution, the industrial
revolution and in the West the public health revolution. By 1980, there were 4 billion of us on
the planet. Just 10 years later, in 1990, there were 5 billion of us. By this point initial signs of the
consequences of our growth were starting to show. Not the least of these was on water. Our
demand for water not just the water we drank but the water we needed for food production and to
make all the stuff we were consuming was going through the roof. But something was starting to
happen to water. There are now more than 7 billion of us on Earth. As our numbers continue to
grow, we continue to increase our need for far more water, far more food, far more land, far more
transport and far more

Terrorism And Domestic Terrorism
The idea of terrorism is to incite terror of a government by intimidation or coercion. For example,
the Weathermen, they used bombs to blow up symbols of the United States to instill terror into the
government, to get Americans out of Vietnam War. However, the jihadist of al Qaeda crashed two
planes into the World Trade Center to provoke fear into the US by showing weakness in our private
transportation system and changing the lives of Americans. Nevertheless, the terror act of 9/11 has
people preparing for more international terrorist attacks, but in the last 16 years the only terrorist
attacks in the US have been domestic terrorism. This fear of international terrorism was a hot topic
during the 2016 Presidential Election, where one party wanted to ban a religious group of people
from entering the US. Yet, domestic terror attacks are by far more many than international ones: in
our data set, only about 14% of the almost 82,000 terror incidents were international terror events
(Liebert, Kokakos, Schulze, 2011, p. 1). This shows that citizens do not know the different between
international terrorism and domestic terrorism, because if they did, there would more focus on
domestic terrorism even though terrorism is so rare compared to other crimes (Newman Clark,
2008). I am going to discuss the difference between international terrorism and domestic terrorism.
International terrorism has a specific definition as described in 18 as code 2331. For instance, in

The Dilemma of Macular Degeneration Essay
The Dilemma of Macular Degeneration
According to Baily and Hall, while visual impairment early in life is associated with inherited
congenital disorders, abnormal fetal devepment, and problems associated with premature birth,
most eye conditions are associated with aging. They claim that over 70% of the visually impaired
population in the United States is over 65. Age related maculopathy, also called macular
degeneration, or AMD, impairs the center of vision in older individuals. The macula is the region in
the back of the retina that surrounds and includes the fovea (Goldstein 1999). It is important to
understand that when this degeneration progresses enough, the condition constitutes blindness
because the foveal area is what is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Danger can exist for victims of the condition when simply walking down the street or even through
their own homes. While there is yet no cure for macular degeneration the research is in progress.
Two main areas of research include investigating the causes and exploring potential treatments.
According to Friedman, progress in the effort to stop or prevent AMD will be slow until the
cause is learned. He claims retinal pigmant epithelium damage to be the prominant theory
explaining the choroidal circulation changes that lead to AMD. Although Friedmal himself
does not subscribe to this theory, other researchers do and use it as a basis for study. Grunwald,
Harisprasad, Dupont, M. G. Mguire, Fine, Bruker, A.M. Maguire, and Ho compared choroidal
blood flow in subjects with AMD to a control group. They used laser doppler flowmetry to asess
the volume, velocity, and flow of blood in the center of the fovea. Ten subjects with no drusen
(cellular debris) were compared to 20 subjects with ten or more large drusen. The average visual
acuities of the two groups was very close. No significant differences between age, blood pressure,
or intraocular pressure was revealed between the subjects. Spraul, G. E. Lang, Grossnik laus, and
G. K. Lang questioned the validity of the study. They claim doppler flowmetry to be an imperfect
method for such a study because of multiple light scattering properties of the tissue. They also

Sylvia Plath Poetry Analysis
Sylvia Plath, Judith Right and Emily Dickinson all express through their poetry the diverse feelings
and beliefs they have in regards to life and death. Throughout Plath s poems it is evident that she
resents life and obsesses over the purity and perfection that she associates with death. Contrastingly,
Wright demonstrates through her poems how she accepts the cycle of life, and embraces the gifts
and challenges that it holds. Then, unlike Plath and Wright, Dickinson regards deathand the afterlife
with uncertainty and she portrays through her poetrythe curiosity she has for life after death and the
secrets it holds. These poets all use the similar technique of imagery to express the intense emotions
they associate with both life and death. Furthermore, throughout the poems by Dickinson, Plath and
Wright it is evident that each employ language techniques to portray their diverse beliefs and
emotions regarding life and death. Finally, all three poets employ structure to illustrate the depth to
which they regard life and death and the power each holds.
Throughout the imagery in the poems Tulips , Woman to Child and Just lost, when I was saved!
by Plath, Wright and Dickinson, respectively, each poet explores their views in regard to life and
death. This is evident within Tulips as Plath states Their smiles catch onto my skin, little smiling
hooks. Thus, illustrating through the personification of hooks, how her family do not know the
pain that they cause her as their smiles dig into her skin and hold her to a life that she does not
want. Furthermore, the metaphor of the hooks draws a direct comparison between being
unwillingly held to her life, just as a hook catches fish which do not want to be caught.
Conversely, Wright expresses her acceptance of the lifecycle as she states in Woman to Child Out
of darkness rose the seed. / Then all a world I made in me and I am the stem that fed the fruit,/ the
link that joins you to the night. Thereby, through employing nature imagery, Wright demonstrates
the serenity and naturalness with which she regards death, just as the death and regeneration of
plants is natural. Additionally, the imagery of darkness is portrayed in a positive sense as the gift
of her

there is a monster. The monster is created by human body parts and sewn together with a brain that

Chiquitas Global Turnaround
Executive Summary
This report details several international management problems that Chiquita has been faced with
over the past two decades. Many of these problems are to do with the company s previously poor
image when it came to Corporate and Social responsibility. Over the years Chiquita faced many
accusations about the conditions workers were faced with at many of their facilities in Latin
America and have also had their environmental policies questioned many times in the press. The
company has made great strides in recent years in improving their public image with regards to
corporate and social responsibility. In particular Chiquita s commitment to the Better Bananas
Project has helped improve their public image along with the ... Show more content on

For example, in 1998 Chiquita fell a victim of an undercover investigation into dangerous and
illegal business practices. The Cincinnati Enquirer, a paper based in Kentucky, accused the
company guilty of labour, human rights, environmental and political violations in central America,
leaving an unsavoury impression of our company according to Jeff Zalla, current corporate
responsibility officer at Chiquita. (Luthans, F., amp; P. Doh, J. 2012).
The centre of the debate about the CSR is the nature and extent of corporate obligations that
extend beyond the economic and legal responsibilities of the firm. The idea of social
responsibilities supposes that the corporation has not only economic and legal obligations, but also
certain responsibilities to society which extend beyond these obligations (McGuire, 1963: 144).
The issue is therefore critical for the firm as it is in the business s long term self interest to be
socially responsible. If Chiquita wants to have a healthy climate in which to function in the future,
it must take actions now to ensure its long term viability. Ultimately it will benefit the company by
winning the public because the public believe firms should take on social responsibility.

Classic Coming of Age Stories in A White Heron by Sarah...
Reading coming of age stories are always interesting and at times nastolgic. Coming of age stories
typically include a young protagonist forced to make a grown decision which is a transition to their
first move into adulthood. In a sense, these stories show the protagonist shifting from innocence to
gaining experiences. The two coming of agestories that we read in class were A White Heron by
Sarah Orne Jewettand The Man Who Was Almost A Man by Richard Wright. Both being coming
of age stories, they have similar features but were different in the sense that one protagonist
seemed to have made a shift into adulthood whereas one did not. Starting of with A White Heron
, the story starts with a mellow, quiet mood. Sylvia is walking in the woods with her companion,
her cow. Jewett includes words and phrases such as childish patience and the little girl that
makes the reader grasp the idea of Sylvia being a child. The fact that Sylvia hears the whistle of
the stranger and hides also show the idea of her being a young child. The first day meeting the
stranger, Sylvia seems reserved and not paying much attention to him talking about the white
heron, even when he confesses to pay ten dollar for anyone who helps him find it. Soon enough,
Sylvia develops a crush on the hunter. She does go in the woods with him for his needs to find
the white heron but she does not disclose where the bird could be, it seemed as if she just wanted
to enjoy his company. When Sylvia goes on her

Adam Weishaupt Biography Essay
Adam Weishaupt was born on February 6, 1748. After graduating from the University of Ingolstadt
in 1768, Weishaupt went on to become a professor of law. Through his work he adopted Kantian
Idealism, which would influence his ideals and lead him to start the Illuminati. At first, Weishaupt
attempted to join the Freemasons, but found that it was too expensive and that his ideas would not
fit into the order, leading him to form his own group. On May 1, 1776, Adam Weishaupt

The Death Of Romeo And Juliet s Death
Once upon a time there was a boy named Romeo and a girl named Juliet, who lived separately

beautiful love ended in tragedy with the death of the two star crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet.
Many people had different opinions about who to blame for Romeo and Juliet s death. Some of
them said that the environmental factors (fate) caused their deaths. Others said that the authority
Figures was blamed for their deaths. Part of people were blaming Romeo and Juliet (themselves)
for their death. Actually, all of these statements blame for Romeo and Juliet s death and there are a
lot of evidences that would support my opinion. One of the causes that lead to Romeo and Juliet s
death is the environmental factors (fate included). Environmental factors have been about the time
that they were living in, the feud between the families, and destiny. The feud of the families caused
their death because if the families weren t enemies, then, they won t get married secretly, or god had

The Best Selling Garment Of All Time
Marked the best selling garment of all time , denim has been a key participant in the evolution of
popular culture (Weber 2006). Originally making its public debut appearance within the mining
sectors in the mid 1800s, denim has become a product of globalization, as it gained both attention
and wear by billions (Foreman 2015). As various styles have evolved from denim, jeans have
deemed consistency throughout popular culture movements, withstanding the test of time. Not only
has denim broken barriers of age, class, and race, but the way in which jeans have been altered is a
direct product of popular culture, carried out via youth subcultures.
Why study something as acquisitive as denim when examining theories of popular culture,
particularly when trends come and go? British media theorist and sociologist Dick Hebdige is
distinguished for his popular culture studies, as he is labeled as the primary popular culture
reference maker. His research via sociological analysis has paved the way for proceeding theorists
to further explore the complexity of popular culture movements. Denim, however, is unique in the
sense that the evolution of this single garment has disrupted orthodox societal structures not only in
its country of origin, but also globally. Its invention and circulation epitomize the exchange and
intersection of cultural studies, allure a wide audience, and exemplify both political and economic
societal shifts.

The Importance of Flag Detail in the Military Essay
The Importance of Flag Detail
In today s society, the American flag is a symbol of freedom, liberty, and justice among a number
of other values. As Americans, we value the flag for its representation during the revolutionary war
and the everlasting significance of today. As soldiers, we pledge to honor, serve, and protect the
flag and the United States of America at all cost. In this paper, the relationship between the
American flag and the United States Army will be explored through the histories of both.
Furthermore, the importance of flag detail will be discussed by linking the two entities together as
one. Without the American flag s representation, the Army has no purpose; no means to exist.

others. The military of today as of 2009 consists of the around 2 million soldiers stretched across

States Army follows 7 basic principles: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and
personal courage. It is the duty of an American soldier to defend the US flag which symbolizes the

As seen in the histories of the United States Army and the American flag, the two of them go

North Korea s Nuclear Weapons Program Essay
North Korea s Nuclear Weapons program is a major international crisis. In early September of this
year the radical regime of North Korea conducted a Nuclear Weapons test, which broke regional
stability and put the world on alert. North Korea continues to test intercontinental ballistic missiles
and develop more dangerous nuclear warheads to eventually strategically strike South Korea and
the United States. The test was later confirmed by many intelligence agencies as real and extremely
powerful. With current policies failing to address the issue of North Korean Nuclear weapons

Analysis Of Anne Bradstreet And Edward Taylor
Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor are two of the most distinguished and fervent Puritan poets.
Yet this similarity has proven to be one of the few, if not only between these two. One cannot
help but find it intriguing that poets who belong to the same religious group and style would
write so differently. Many of these differences are not even subtle or hidden beneath the text
itself. The differences themselves hold implications and ideas that differ between each poet. The
first difference which is the most obvious would be the style of each respected poet. Every poet
has a unique style, but generally those who belong to the same period or set of ideas have similar
styles. Between Bradstreet and Taylor there are no similarities in style. Taylor can be considered a
much more polished poet. Taylor s poetryis full of poetic techniques and advanced styling tools
such as the iambic meter and advanced rhyming schemes. This style can be seen as the norm for
a highly educated preacher which Taylor was. Bradstreet on the other hand has a more simplistic
style that can be seen as the voice of the common or average Puritan. Therefore, there is far less
ornamentation in her poetry. If one compares the Bradstreet s Here Follows Some Verses Upon
the Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666. and Taylor s From God s Determinations. One can see
the difference in syntax clearly. Bradstreet uses simple diction while tackling the topic of her
burning house. She uses simple and

Food, Safety, And Justice For All
Food, Safety, and Justice for All
Americans today tend to have confidence that the food they consume is healthy and safe; however,
the reality of what really goes on in the food industry proves something completely different. A
glimpse of this awakening reality was revealed when award winning journalist, Tracie McMillan
embarked on a mission to discover the actuality of the American Food Industry. She managed to
find three jobs related to the food commerce: First she picked crops, next she stocked and sold
produce, and finally she helped prepare food for Applebee s. What stood out the most in her
motivating journey, was that food safety policy was not incorporated in to any of her employment
trainings. Food safety policies are very important to the food industry. The Government created the
policies in place for a reason: the safety of consumers. Corporations should not overlook the
necessity of properly training their employees by providing food safety policies to them. For this
reason the United States Government should enforce stricter audit laws to make sure employers are
properly preparing their employees to enter the workforce.
Every man, woman, and child who visit a restaurant should feel at ease that the food they consume
will be harmless. Americans are entitled to secure food products by the policies that the
Government put in place. But, food safety is not being provided by companies to their employees.
McMillan asserts that while working at Applebee s for two

The Psyche of a Jealous Husband, a Mad Wife and a Disillusioned Man
This paper provides an insightful look into the psychological unraveling of the mind that can take

mentally tormented woman. The three stories, the Jealous Husband Returns in Form of a Parrot by
Robert Olen Butler, the Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The symbol to rightly mention first is the obvious sickly, yellow wallpaper itself which adequately
represented the wife s confused and shaky state of mind, as well as the obsession that would soon

externalize the darkness within her, and she later added that, I can see a strange, provoking,
formless sort of figure that seems to skulk about behind that silly and conspicuous front design
(242). Interestingly, from a psychological point of view, the figure seemed to be a reflection of the
protagonist s pain of being a woman stuck in a marriage that did not satisfy her anymore. Additional
symbols that played a role in the story were the colonial mansion (238), and the great immovable
bed (243) which both appeared to possess innocent façades at first, but looking more in depth,
were actually hints to the true dwelling place of the protagonist, a mental asylum. Throughout this
story, the protagonist is going through great distress emotionally which is placing an intense strain

Things They Carried Ethnography
In any war story, but especially a true one, it s difficult to separate what happened from what
seemed to happen.
Tim O Brien, The Things They Carried It is not only war stories that create confusion, both for their
writers, and their readers, about the nature of the truth they tell. Is the truth in a true story what the
writer experienced, or the truth of what really happened? If the story is about other people, is the
truth what the writer sees them do, or what they think they are doing? If the writer does not know
the whole truth, does the story become false?
All these questions become even more pertinent if posed about ethnographies. An ethnography is,
by nature, meant to be a description of a people (the dictionary ... Show more content on

Ethnography has undergone a process of drastic evolution (or, some might say, oscillation) in
the century or so that it has existed as an anthropological tool. Many aspects of ethnography
have changed between two extremes that I will term traditional ethnography and postmodern
ethnography. Everything from the declared goal of the anthropologist to the approach to
possible objectivity or subjectivity of the anthropologist s writing, from views on the concept of
culture to the ethnography s intended audience, even to choice of topic to explore, has changed.
I will explore these differences using Coming of Age in Samoa by Margaret Mead as an
example of traditional ethnography, and Poetics of Military Occupation by Smadar Lavie as an
example of postmodern ethnography. Veiled Sentiments by Lila Abu Lughod will serve as
something of a mix, poised between the two extremes. I must first, however, explain my choice
of postmodern as a label for the kind of ethnography that Smadar Lavie produced in 1990 (based
on fieldwork done throughout the 70 s). The aspect of postmodernism that I embrace in
characterizing Poetics of Military Occupation as postmodern is postmodernism s abandonment of
the concept of an absolute truth. The definition of postmodernism offered by Josh McDowell and
Bob Hostetler as a worldview characterized by the belief that truth doesn t exist in any objective
sense but is created rather than discovered serves well to illustrate the ways

True Grit
Title
I believe that True Grit properly titles this book. Throughout the story almost all of the characters
displayed some of kind of bravery or courage, a.k.a grit(courage and resolve; strength of character).
Mattie Ross especially had grit. She was only fourteen when she took on a daring task most people
wouldn t, to find fugitives in the Choctaw Territory and avenge her father s death. Mattie was the
biggest example of True Grit , in my opinion. Another was Rooster Cogburn. He went rode
bravely, into a shootout, with four brutal criminals all by himself. Almost all of the characters
showed some kind of grit in their own way, but Mattie and Rooster were my favorites.
4. Theme
The themes of True Grit that stood out the most to me were friendship, vengeance, and justice.
The whole story is about Mattie going to avenge her father s death and find Tom Chaney, who
murdered her father. In the end Mattie gets takes a shot at Tom, which doesn t kill him. After she
did Mattie fell into a pit right behind her. Later on Rooster kills Tom then came into the cave and

Comparing Single And Married Life In The United States
Nowadays, people in the world are more like to be single because they think they can have more
money, freedom, and time for entertainment. During these three decades the average age of
marry is increase in my country. The lives of people who are single differ from who are married
in terms of the amount of money they can make and spend, having freedom, and having
entertainment. First, the lives of single and married people are different in terms of basic life
expenses. Obviously, married people have to spend more money for basic life expenses such as,
housing, insurance, utilities, and foods. On the other hand, Single people spend less money for
these mentioned expenses. Married people can make more money if both couple have a job. In
contrast, single people have to make money by their own. In addition, the lives of single and
married people are different in terms of having the ability to do anything they want. For example,
married people can t do road trip whenever they want because they have to check that with their

people can t go anywhere they want. For instance, they can t go to bar restaurant after 10 pm. By

The Habsburg and Ottoman Empire
Throughout history there has been many religious conflicts. Of those, the Habsburg and Ottoman

Aragon (Spain) and the Habsburg territories. He also became the ruler of Aztec and Inca Empires

Charles was the title of emperor. In 1299, Osman Bey was in charge of the Ottoman Empirewhen he

The battle in which Charles encountered was just the start of his religions war. At first religion

title did not mean much in terms of power and financial gain in either the German principalities or

When You Are Old By William Butler Yeats
When You Are Old is a poem that was written by William Butler Yeats in 1891. It is a poem
about a person who wants to be remembered by those he loves. It is a story about dreams
forgotten and memories long gone. Yeats captured a feeling of longing in this poem that some
people may never understand unless they have a relationship that is more to them than any other
relationship they will ever have. When You Are Old talks about a woman who was loved by a man
until he died. It is a story of how a life should be remembered by a person who loved another. When
You Are Old is about the loveof a man for a woman whom he had on a pedestal. He felt this
woman was loved by many with a true and deep love and loved by others with a false love. He
felt this woman was loved much like people today love celebrities. Yeats wrote about this woman
as though he knew her intimately. He asks her to slowly read, and dream of the soft look, Your
eyes had once and of their shadows deep (Yeats). He wants her to remember how things were in
her youth. He wants her to remember her dreams and think of how things were and how they
may have been. Yeats is asking her to take her time and day dream about her glory days. In the first
lines of the poem Yeats describes this woman as old and grey and full of sleep (Yeats). The speaker
of the poem addresses his beloved saying that when she is aged she should read a particular book

Hofstede s Six Dimensions Of Culture
When a leader is born, raised and works in the same cultural area, he/she is adapted to the cultural
environment. But whenever a person has to lead a team consisting of intercultural people or even
when a leader has to move to a different country, the cultural differences might become an obstacle
for successful leadership. Different countries, nations have different history, values, religion. A
successful leader has to understand such differences to be effective. Hofstede s Six Dimensions of
Culture is an effective framework that helps to find and understand cultural differences of other
parts of the world and to overcome the misunderstandings that might erupt unintentionally.
At the end of 1970s Dutch psychologist Dr. Geert Hofstede created Four Dimensions of Culture.
Based on data from more than 40 countries he and his research team identified dimensions that
perceive cultures. Dr. Hofstede analyzed questionnaires of employees of a big international
company IBM with offices all over the world. He found it very important, that it is better to take
into consideration the whole cluster (country) and look for similarities in it, rather than concentrate
on individuals. ...they [IBM employees] were similar in all respects except nationality, which made
the effect of national differences in their answers stand out unusually clearly (Hofstede, 2011).
Each country received a score 0 100 for each of the dimensions. When placed relative to other
countries, using the scores it

Introduction:
In 1950, Otto Diels and Kurt Alder, a research student under Diels, were awarded the Nobel Prize
in Chemistry for their work on the discovery of a reaction that is commonly practiced still to this
day1. The reaction that is presently known as Diels Alder reaction involves dienes reacting with
alkenes to form cyclic compounds1. Diels Alder reactions are among the most resourceful in
organic synthesis due to the fact that they are relatively simple to carry out, produce a high amount

How Did Jonas Salk Use The Polio Vaccine
Polio, something that can devastate anyone and everyone so very quickly. In 1953, you didn t

Robotics Changes the World
Robotics Changes The World Robotic technology has taken an important role in our society since
many years ago. These recent days, scientists and engineers have been developing an automotive
technology that allows cars to park themselves without any troubles. Noel Sharkey (2008), a
professor of computer science at the University of Sheffield and an expert on robot science and
techno games, in The Ethical Frontiers of Robotics shows the unavoidable of the use of robots in
the future and ethical problems that come together (p. 357). According to Sharkey (2008), there are
positive and negative aspects of the robots use for care for children and the elderly, and the use of
autonomous robots in the military (p. 358). Sharkey claims that using... Show more content on

The study will look at the superbike segment of Yamaha and focus on the Yamaha R1, a popular
sports bike within the superbike market. The term innovation is defined as a change that creates a
new dimension of performance (Drucker Hesselbein, 2002) and in the context of this study it is
both the element of change and the increase in product performance which raises the questions,
whether it is this element alone which fuels the success for sustaining competitive advantage?
Competitive advantage is defined as a position that a firm occupies in its competitive landscape
(Porter, 1985). Porter described the position as a situation whether sustainable or not as a point
whereby earnings exceed costs. This simple calculation suggests, according to Porter that ordinary
competitive pressures are not able to drive down the firms earnings to the point where they cover
all costs and just provide sufficient additional return to keep capital invested. The notion of
sustainability is an area which is difficult to achieve here as the

Nursing Reflection Paper
On Tuesday November 21st, I had my last rotation at Hartford Hospital. During the month I
spent going there I had the opportunity of treating patients with different systemic diseases, and
getting familiar with the different medications, assessing them for any possible emergency, and
reassuring the need to check vitals and medical history during each appointment. Also, it was a
great place to practice taking radiographs like FMXs, panoramic radiograph and VBWs. In
addition, I had the chance to see the work of dental hygienist in a hospital setting, and I have to
say I liked it a lot. I wish I could have the opportunity to work at a hospital as well. For the
morning I saw a 73 years old how suffers from Parkinson s disease, high blood pressure, and
GERD. She came for her 3 month recall visit and her vitals were BP: 147/67 P: 89. She is an
ASA III, and she came with the help of her daughter who brought and her husband who came to
pick her up. During her gingival assessment I found moderate plaque and BOP in the lingual
aspects of mandibular and maxillary teeth. Patient stated she uses a power toothbrush and does
not floss or uses floss threaders to clean under a fixed bridge she has on the UR quadrant. Her
probing depth readings were generalized 1 3 mm and localized 4 5 mm with generalized abrasion
and recession from 2 4 mm. My patient A.D. represented a challenge for me because during the

Disfluency Among College Students
Additionally, disfluency has been shown to reveal metacognitive processes, or thoughts on one s
own thoughts or ideas (Galak, Nelson, 2002). One study demonstrated that when participants were
asked to guess the distance from one city to another, those who were presented with a disfluent
questionnaire guessed much greater distances than those who received a fluent questionnaire
(Alter, Oppenheimer, 2008). In fact, those who were presented with disfluent questions guessed an
average of 1,331.7 miles, while those with the fluent questions guessed 641.9 miles. This study
suggested the participants used visual text fluency as a proxy for distance estimation, and the
disfluent text caused people to guess greater numbers. Stepping back, this study... Show more

Despite years of research, the idea of disfluency has never been utilized to help math students in a
classroom setting. For example, would a student respond to a question differently and perhaps more
effectively, if they had to invest more effort into reading the question because it was presented
disfluently? Additionally, would the student pay more attention to the question and therefore not
make computational errors in the following steps of his or her answer? Any application of
disfluency in mathematics has yet to be explored. I researched how disfluency affects students math
scores, and if disfluency minimizes copying errors, which occur when a student does not fully
comprehend the question and makes an accidental computation error when solving the problem or
rewriting the equation. I hypothesize that overall, adding disfluent fonts to the math questions will
increase test scores on an overall basis. In addition, on a question to question basis, word problems
and questions with written directions will have the highest correct rate in the disfluent group, while
questions with no written directions will have a higher correct rate in the fluent

Germany Ten thousand megawatts: Germany is one of the most countries use of solar energy, and
plans because the rate of use will be 100% by the year 2050. In view of the year 2009 alone, we
find that Germany has installed 3,806 megawatts of solar power generators; any more than the full
capacity of solar energy Spain, and nearly eight times what the United States has recently install it.

Spain
3 500 megawatts: for as long as Spain was the leader in the field of solar energy use in their
capacity of 2008 amounted to the equivalent of Al2605 megawatts, but abandoned this position in
favor of Germany, so the sharp decline in that year s event in 2009, where Spain is the time did

Overtock.com is an online retailer that started out in 1997 that offered brand name merchandise at
discount prices. In 2005, Overstock.com noticed that their call center infrastructure was beginning
to show signs of stress which barred them from performing the excellent 24/7 customer service that
differentiated them from many of their competitors. The ever increasing call volume reached a
peak during the holiday seasons and being that the volume of calls was too much to handle,
Overstock.com outsourced the overflow. Their outsourcer s contact center was on a separate
platform and ran different systems than Overstock.com s in house systems which prevented quality

Comparison of Ethan Hawke and Kenneth Branagh s Versions of Hamlet
Modern day directors use a variety of methods to hold ones interest. Ethan Hawke and Kenneth
Branagh s created versions of Hamlet that shared some similarities, but ultimately had many
differences in respects to an audience s appeal. An appealing movie is one that has an alluring
ambiance and an intellectual stimulus. With these two movie versions, a setting and a mood forced
an audience to acquire specific emotions, but Ethan Hawke s version generated emotions more
strongly and effectively. Also, these movies had extremely different uses of music and visuals, but
both movie versions incorporated them well for the ambiance it tried to obtain. Finally, both movie

As well, the mood of darkness and fear in Branagh s version was often lost with the abundance of
information shared between the guards in the first few scenes. Hawke s version of Hamlet was
creative and artistic. His film had a setting and a mood that strongly influenced the ambiance and
that created an abundance of thought for a modern audience. Therefore, Hawke s Hamlet was more
appealing to an audience in respects to the setting and the mood.
In these two movies, the right music and visuals had to be chosen in order to get the ambiance
Hawke and Branagh tried to obtain. Each director chose different music and images that were
very visual and auditive for an audience s appeal. In Hawke s version, visuals of New York and
Times Square were appealing to an audience. Modern music at the beginning of the film caught
the interest of the younger generation. As well, close ups of Hamlet were revealing to an
audience and it was easy to feel infatuated by the character s nihilistic despair. Branagh s version
used supernatural and dark visuals of ghosts, statues, and castles to produce feelings of awe and
fear. The scene of the ghost was quick and staggering, and it created an automatic feeling of
anxiety and fear. As well, the traditional use of classical music did a skillful job of creating
suspense. Both directors appealed to an audience by using music and visuals that created an
ambiance the directors desperately

Explain How The Romans And Made Up Their Value System
There are three qualities that shaped the world view of the Romans and made up their value
system. These beliefs included: Imperialism, Eclecticism, Practicality. These ideals help in
explaining how the Romans were viewed by the world. Imperialism is the belief that it is
acceptable for someone or a group of someones to enforce their culture and its values on other
people, even it if means to do so by force. This particular belief became the significant value of the
Romans, who believed that they were superior people. Under the idea of imperialism the Romass
increased their size by seizing other countries and forced them to submit to their rule. The Romans
were known for conquering their conquest. The Arch is a product of imperialism.

which was free that time. In the early 60 is of Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight founded the

Making A Band Or Start Writing Music
When people create a band or start writing music, they want money. In the early 20th century, artists
were not receiving the royalties that they should have earned. Enter the first Performing Rights
Organization which is also called a PRO that promised what the artist should be earning, money.
PROs were fine until the organizations realized how much money they can earn. PROs exist for a
reason, but the cost of the license, why they are non profit , and why the artist has to sign with
PRO s that make PROs truly evil. In February 1914, the first PRO in the United States was formed.
Music writers came together and The American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers was
formed. The ASCAP sought out artists, composers, and publishers to... Show more content on

But not all of the artists are under one PRO, so the person must buy a license from each PRO
that represents the artist s music that they would be playing (Public Performance Licenses and
Music for Your Small Business). If the person thinks they can get away with not paying, think
again. PROs are always in court suing small businesses for copyright infringement. On average,
the lawsuit ends up being $700 $30,000 depending on the severity of the infringement.
Depending on what license they are applying for, the cost varies. License fees range from $300
$500 and could cost more depending on some variables like if the music would be for a dance
studio or for a church (Public Performance Licenses and Music for Your Small Business). A PRO
might sound like a good thing, right? But you re wrong because the PROs goal is to make a
profit for the company. An organization s job is to make money, and then they pay taxes on the
revenue they receive. If an organization says they are non profit, they usually do not have to pay
taxes on the revenue they earn. PROs like ASCAP and BMI say they are non profit, which
means more profit for the artist, right? Wrong (Why You Should Think Twice Before Joining
ASCAP, BMI or SESAC). Members of the ASCAP earn 86.5 cent for every dollar that the ASCAP
earns. But isn t the other 13.5 cents profit? But PROs do that for one specific reason, to trap artist.

  • 2. Organizational Design Essay Key Concepts of Organizational Design If an organization is to remain effective as it changes and grows with its environment, managers must continuously evaluate the way their organizations are designed: for example, the way work is divided among people and departments, and the way it controls its human, financial, and physical resources. Organizational design involves difficult choices about how to control that is, coordinate organizational tasks and motivate the people who perform them to maximize an organization s ability to create value (Jones, 2004). • 6. Civilized, Sense And Sensibility, By Jane Austen Enjoyable, civilized Sense and Sensibility was the first and one of Jane Austen s novels; she wrote it in 1795, but it was not published for 16 years. It was written by a young woman who ostensibly had little experience of the world although her fiction proves she missed the little that occurred on her domestic stage and the story reflects that orientation, as a mother and her three daughters wait passively while all the interesting men in the vicinity disappear on unexplained missions to London. In a modern story, the women would have demanded explanations. What gives Sense and Sensibility its tension and mystery are that the characters rarely say what they mean. There is great gossip within the women s sphere, but with men. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edward leaves suddenly for London. The next man to appear is Col. Brandon, played by that indispensable Alan Rickman. He is attracted to Marianne, but before he can act, she is smitten by the dashing Willoughby (Greg Wise), who rescues her from a mishap and charms her off her feet. No sooner have these men appeared when they, too, are called away to London although not before Col. Brandon has suggested, almost by osmosis, that he knows something unspeakable about his rival Willoughby. His secret is the sort of thing that would not be a secret long in the modern age, but in Austen s time, such things were not spoken of, and Brandon might even allow Marianne to make a disastrous marriage rather than tell her what her maidenly ears should never hear. This maddening, intriguing inability to simply blurt out the truth is indispensable to 19th century fiction, and I find it enormously satisfying. Better the character who leaves us to guess at unspeakable depths than one who bores us with confessional psychobabble. The men s departure to London leaves the three daughters and their mother facing an indefinite future in their sewing circle. So, when a kindly relative proposes a visit to London, they seize upon it with desperation, and it is there that secrets are revealed and alliances are smashed or formed. The screenplay, adapted from Austen by Emma Thompson, takes wicked delight ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. How Does Lee Present Scout s Relationship In To Kill A... They are your competition, yet they support you. They are your enemy, yet when it comes down to it you end up fighting side by side. They hate you, yet love you more than words could say. Sibling relationships are among the most complicated and confusing things to understand. Complex sibling relationships are seen everywhere, whether you are reading or watching televison. To Kill a Mockingbird is just one example of literature that contains a siblingdynamic effecting the theme. Harper Lee skillfully tells of the compelling relationship between Jem and Scout, as it unfolds and contributes to the strong theme, change versus tradition. Verbarendse 2 Throughout the publication Jem and Scout mature as people, adapt to changes around them, and develop a close bond. The theme, change versus tradition, is ever present throughout the storyline. It is first revealed as Jem begins to grow up and doesn t have time for Scout. This is evident in the following quotation: Jem was twelve. He was difficult to live with, inconsistent, moody. His appetite was appalling, and he told me so many times to stop pestering him... The Treaty Of Versailles And Japan On January 1919, Saionji Kinmochi, Japan s representative to the Versailles Peace Conference found himself seated alongside the leaders of the Big Four (Great Britain, France, Italy, and the United States). This occasion marked Japan s status as one of the world s great powers after the First World War. More importantly the Treaty of Versailles expanded the Japanese Empire because it legalized Japanese annexation of former German concessions in China and its colonies in the South Pacific. Although far from the battlefields of Europe, Japan was an active participant of the First World War because of the Anglo Japanese Alliance. The alliance called for mutual support in times of war and Japan answered the call by invading German... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1858 Britain imposed another treaty called the Anglo Japanese Treaty of Amity and Commerce which forced Japan to make concessions to Britain such as the opening of the ports of Hakodate, Kanagawa, and Nagasaki to British commerce. For a while parts of Japan were turned into semi colonial status, which motivated the Meiji regime to modernize and strengthen Japan. Although Britain imposed unequal treaties to Japan, it helped Japan to modernize, because Britain played host to the Japanese delegation that studied the political system, industries, education, and the militaries of the western world. The military cooperation between the two countries was especially strong because the leaders of the Imperial Japanese Navy were keen on modelling the organization after the British Royal Navy. Since the 1870 s, Japanese sailors and officers were sent to the United Kingdom to study the methods and organization of the Royal Navy. Moreover the newly formed Imperial Japanese Navy acquired some of its first vessels from Britain. In 1894, a new treaty called the Anglo Japanese Treaty of Commerce and Navigation was signed which paved the way for the Anglo Japanese Alliance in 1902. They go off to work in the morning while their husbands spend the day cleaning and cooking, some may even have a part time job. Employed or not, the husband always makes sure their woman is fed after a hard days work. Do these statements sound ridiculous to you as an American? Are they even feasible? Not in this country, here things are the complete opposite. How do we know that? These ads show attractive settings, maybe a beach with clear blue water and carefree and happy people, maybe a couple, of course with a cigarette. Kids who see this, observe a carefree, cool lifestyle want these benefits for themselves and begin smoking. This illustrates how easily children can be convinced. We always thought cartoons were harmless, animated figures are purely entertainment. However, kids begin with cartoons that easily socialize and next thing you know, Americas young minds are spending two to four hours a day viewing #8230; (t.v.). (Spicher Hudak,1997) Studies show that children recall more information if it s presented verbally and visually such as a t.v. screen.(Walma van der Molen Van der Voort,1997) In a society where we use the boob tube as both entertainment and baby sitter, an average 20 hours a week could be fatal. In these harmless cartoons, studies show that male characters outnumber female characters by about 4:1 and that only a small number of females are shown in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Patience In Disney World It takes great patience and love in order to make the kind of progress that benefits everyone. (Mashos) Patience is a needed characteristic in today s society. An example of patience would be my trip to Disney World when I was seven years old. When my parents sprung the surprise that we would be going to Disney World, the trip itself was still a month and a half out. That month and a half was the longest of my entire life. I was so excited and it seemed so far away. Finally the day came and I woke up a ball of sunshine, Everyone wake up! It s Disney day, it s Disney day! We packed our bags frantically figuring out what was important to bring and what was not, and then we drove to the airport with the anticipation buzzing in the air. Meanwhile at the airport we proceeded to wait an additional hour to get through security and wait for the plane to be ready to board. On the plane we flew for 3 hours and landed in Orlando, Florida, which is a relatively short drive from Disney World itself. My family and I were... We had no idea what patience was until we actually attempted to ride some of those rides. There was a jungle safari ride in which we could go on a boat on a man made river and hear a story and see some wildlife. We were weaving back and forth through rope barriers listening to the conversations of people around us as we dutifully awaited our turn, like soldiers preparing for battle. Meanwhile the actual ride was maybe ten to fifteen minutes long. The wait was excruciating, but after we got on the ride, we saw why it was such a tedious wait, the memory later on was worth ... During some time towards the end of this century, there will be at least 10 billion of us. We got to where we are now through a number of civilization and society shaping events , most notably the agricultural revolution, the scientific revolution, the industrial revolution and in the West the public health revolution. By 1980, there were 4 billion of us on the planet. Just 10 years later, in 1990, there were 5 billion of us. By this point initial signs of the consequences of our growth were starting to show. Not the least of these was on water. Our demand for water not just the water we drank but the water we needed for food production and to make all the stuff we were consuming was going through the roof. But something was starting to happen to water. There are now more than 7 billion of us on Earth. • 15. Terrorism And Domestic Terrorism The idea of terrorism is to incite terror of a government by intimidation or coercion. For example, the Weathermen, they used bombs to blow up symbols of the United States to instill terror into the government, to get Americans out of Vietnam War. However, the jihadist of al Qaeda crashed two planes into the World Trade Center to provoke fear into the US by showing weakness in our private transportation system and changing the lives of Americans. Nevertheless, the terror act of 9/11 has people preparing for more international terrorist attacks, but in the last 16 years the only terrorist attacks in the US have been domestic terrorism. This fear of international terrorism was a hot topic during the 2016 Presidential Election, where one party wanted to ban a religious group of people from entering the US. Yet, domestic terror attacks are by far more many than international ones: in our data set, only about 14% of the almost 82,000 terror incidents were international terror events (Liebert, Kokakos, Schulze, 2011, p. 1). This shows that citizens do not know the different between international terrorism and domestic terrorism, because if they did, there would more focus on domestic terrorism even though terrorism is so rare compared to other crimes (Newman Clark, 2008). I am going to discuss the difference between international terrorism and domestic terrorism. International terrorism has a specific definition as described in 18 as code 2331. The Dilemma of Macular Degeneration Essay The Dilemma of Macular Degeneration According to Baily and Hall, while visual impairment early in life is associated with inherited congenital disorders, abnormal fetal devepment, and problems associated with premature birth, most eye conditions are associated with aging. They claim that over 70% of the visually impaired population in the United States is over 65. Age related maculopathy, also called macular degeneration, or AMD, impairs the center of vision in older individuals. The macula is the region in the back of the retina that surrounds and includes the fovea (Goldstein 1999). Danger can exist for victims of the condition when simply walking down the street or even through their own homes. While there is yet no cure for macular degeneration the research is in progress. Two main areas of research include investigating the causes and exploring potential treatments. According to Friedman, progress in the effort to stop or prevent AMD will be slow until the cause is learned. He claims retinal pigmant epithelium damage to be the prominant theory explaining the choroidal circulation changes that lead to AMD. Although Friedmal himself does not subscribe to this theory, other researchers do and use it as a basis for study. Grunwald, Harisprasad, Dupont, M. G. Mguire, Fine, Bruker, A.M. Maguire, and Ho compared choroidal blood flow in subjects with AMD to a control group. They used laser doppler flowmetry to asess the volume, velocity, and flow of blood in the center of the fovea. Ten subjects with no drusen (cellular debris) were compared to 20 subjects with ten or more large drusen. The average visual acuities of the two groups was very close. No significant differences between age, blood pressure, or intraocular pressure was revealed between the subjects. Spraul, G. E. Lang, Grossnik laus, and G. K. Lang questioned the validity of the study. They claim doppler flowmetry to be an imperfect method for such a study because of multiple light scattering properties of the tissue. They also ... • 18. Sylvia Plath Poetry Analysis Sylvia Plath, Judith Right and Emily Dickinson all express through their poetry the diverse feelings and beliefs they have in regards to life and death. Throughout Plath s poems it is evident that she resents life and obsesses over the purity and perfection that she associates with death. Contrastingly, Wright demonstrates through her poems how she accepts the cycle of life, and embraces the gifts and challenges that it holds. Then, unlike Plath and Wright, Dickinson regards deathand the afterlife with uncertainty and she portrays through her poetrythe curiosity she has for life after death and the secrets it holds. These poets all use the similar technique of imagery to express the intense emotions they associate with both life and death. Furthermore, throughout the poems by Dickinson, Plath and Wright it is evident that each employ language techniques to portray their diverse beliefs and emotions regarding life and death. Finally, all three poets employ structure to illustrate the depth to which they regard life and death and the power each holds. Throughout the imagery in the poems Tulips , Woman to Child and Just lost, when I was saved! by Plath, Wright and Dickinson, respectively, each poet explores their views in regard to life and death. This is evident within Tulips as Plath states Their smiles catch onto my skin, little smiling hooks. Thus, illustrating through the personification of hooks, how her family do not know the pain that they cause her as their smiles dig into her skin and hold her to a life that she does not want. Furthermore, the metaphor of the hooks draws a direct comparison between being unwillingly held to her life, just as a hook catches fish which do not want to be caught. Conversely, Wright expresses her acceptance of the lifecycle as she states in Woman to Child Out of darkness rose the seed. / Then all a world I made in me and I am the stem that fed the fruit,/ the link that joins you to the night. Thereby, through employing nature imagery, Wright demonstrates the serenity and naturalness with which she regards death, just as the death and regeneration of plants is natural. Coming of age stories typically include a young protagonist forced to make a grown decision which is a transition to their first move into adulthood. In a sense, these stories show the protagonist shifting from innocence to gaining experiences. The two coming of agestories that we read in class were A White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewettand The Man Who Was Almost A Man by Richard Wright. Both being coming of age stories, they have similar features but were different in the sense that one protagonist seemed to have made a shift into adulthood whereas one did not. Starting of with A White Heron , the story starts with a mellow, quiet mood. Sylvia is walking in the woods with her companion, her cow. Jewett includes words and phrases such as childish patience and the little girl that makes the reader grasp the idea of Sylvia being a child. The fact that Sylvia hears the whistle of the stranger and hides also show the idea of her being a young child. • 30. Analysis Of Anne Bradstreet And Edward Taylor Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor are two of the most distinguished and fervent Puritan poets. Yet this similarity has proven to be one of the few, if not only between these two. One cannot help but find it intriguing that poets who belong to the same religious group and style would write so differently. Many of these differences are not even subtle or hidden beneath the text itself. The differences themselves hold implications and ideas that differ between each poet. The first difference which is the most obvious would be the style of each respected poet. Every poet has a unique style, but generally those who belong to the same period or set of ideas have similar styles. Between Bradstreet and Taylor there are no similarities in style. Taylor can be considered a much more polished poet. Taylor s poetryis full of poetic techniques and advanced styling tools such as the iambic meter and advanced rhyming schemes. This style can be seen as the norm for a highly educated preacher which Taylor was. Bradstreet on the other hand has a more simplistic style that can be seen as the voice of the common or average Puritan. Therefore, there is far less ornamentation in her poetry. If one compares the Bradstreet s Here Follows Some Verses Upon the Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666. and Taylor s From God s Determinations. One can see the difference in syntax clearly. A glimpse of this awakening reality was revealed when award winning journalist, Tracie McMillan embarked on a mission to discover the actuality of the American Food Industry. She managed to find three jobs related to the food commerce: First she picked crops, next she stocked and sold produce, and finally she helped prepare food for Applebee s. What stood out the most in her motivating journey, was that food safety policy was not incorporated in to any of her employment trainings. Food safety policies are very important to the food industry. The Government created the policies in place for a reason: the safety of consumers. Corporations should not overlook the necessity of properly training their employees by providing food safety policies to them. For this reason the United States Government should enforce stricter audit laws to make sure employers are properly preparing their employees to enter the workforce. Every man, woman, and child who visit a restaurant should feel at ease that the food they consume will be harmless. Americans are entitled to secure food products by the policies that the Government put in place. But, food safety is not being provided by companies to their employees. McMillan asserts that while working at Applebee s for two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of Jealous Husband Returns In Form Of A Parrot The Psyche of a Jealous Husband, a Mad Wife and a Disillusioned Man This paper provides an insightful look into the psychological unraveling of the mind that can take place in certain moments of people s lives, in particular the lives of a jealous husband and a mentally tormented woman. The three stories, the Jealous Husband Returns in Form of a Parrot by Robert Olen Butler, the Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman , and The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe, contain a variety of symbols that give insight into the human psyche and further show how various elements can relate to or foreshadow mental imbalances. The symbol to rightly mention first is the obvious sickly, yellow wallpaper itself which adequately represented the wife s confused and shaky state of mind, as well as the obsession that would soon overtake and consume her life. The wallpaper became the creative outing that she employed to externalize the darkness within her, and she later added that, I can see a strange, provoking, formless sort of figure that seems to skulk about behind that silly and conspicuous front design (242). Interestingly, from a psychological point of view, the figure seemed to be a reflection of the protagonist s pain of being a woman stuck in a marriage that did not satisfy her anymore. Additional symbols that played a role in the story were the colonial mansion (238), and the great immovable bed (243) which both appeared to possess innocent faГ§ades at first, but looking more in depth, were actually hints to the true dwelling place of the protagonist, a mental asylum. • 35. Things They Carried Ethnography In any war story, but especially a true one, it s difficult to separate what happened from what seemed to happen. Tim O Brien, The Things They Carried It is not only war stories that create confusion, both for their writers, and their readers, about the nature of the truth they tell. Is the truth in a true story what the writer experienced, or the truth of what really happened? If the story is about other people, is the truth what the writer sees them do, or what they think they are doing? If the writer does not know the whole truth, does the story become false? All these questions become even more pertinent if posed about ethnographies. An ethnography is, by nature, meant to be a description of a people (the dictionary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ethnography has undergone a process of drastic evolution (or, some might say, oscillation) in the century or so that it has existed as an anthropological tool. Many aspects of ethnography have changed between two extremes that I will term traditional ethnography and postmodern ethnography. Everything from the declared goal of the anthropologist to the approach to possible objectivity or subjectivity of the anthropologist s writing, from views on the concept of culture to the ethnography s intended audience, even to choice of topic to explore, has changed. I will explore these differences using Coming of Age in Samoa by Margaret Mead as an example of traditional ethnography, and Poetics of Military Occupation by Smadar Lavie as an example of postmodern ethnography. Veiled Sentiments by Lila Abu Lughod will serve as something of a mix, poised between the two extremes. I must first, however, explain my choice of postmodern as a label for the kind of ethnography that Smadar Lavie produced in 1990 (based on fieldwork done throughout the 70 s). The aspect of postmodernism that I embrace in characterizing Poetics of Military Occupation as postmodern is postmodernism s abandonment of the concept of an absolute truth. The definition of postmodernism offered by Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler as a worldview characterized by the belief that truth doesn t exist in any objective sense but is created rather than discovered serves well to illustrate the ways ... Throughout the story almost all of the characters displayed some of kind of bravery or courage, a.k.a grit(courage and resolve; strength of character). Mattie Ross especially had grit. She was only fourteen when she took on a daring task most people wouldn t, to find fugitives in the Choctaw Territory and avenge her father s death. Mattie was the biggest example of True Grit , in my opinion. Another was Rooster Cogburn. He went rode bravely, into a shootout, with four brutal criminals all by himself. Almost all of the characters showed some kind of grit in their own way, but Mattie and Rooster were my favorites. 4. The whole story is about Mattie going to avenge her father s death and find Tom Chaney, who murdered her father. In the end Mattie gets takes a shot at Tom, which doesn t kill him. It is a story about dreams forgotten and memories long gone. Yeats captured a feeling of longing in this poem that some people may never understand unless they have a relationship that is more to them than any other relationship they will ever have. When You Are Old talks about a woman who was loved by a man until he died. It is a story of how a life should be remembered by a person who loved another. When You Are Old is about the loveof a man for a woman whom he had on a pedestal. He felt this woman was loved by many with a true and deep love and loved by others with a false love. He felt this woman was loved much like people today love celebrities. Yeats wrote about this woman as though he knew her intimately. He asks her to slowly read, and dream of the soft look, Your eyes had once and of their shadows deep (Yeats). He wants her to remember how things were in her youth. He wants her to remember her dreams and think of how things were and how they may have been. Yeats is asking her to take her time and day dream about her glory days. In the first lines of the poem Yeats describes this woman as old and grey and full of sleep (Yeats). At the end of 1970s Dutch psychologist Dr. Geert Hofstede created Four Dimensions of Culture. Based on data from more than 40 countries he and his research team identified dimensions that perceive cultures. Members of the ASCAP earn 86.5 cent for every dollar that the ASCAP earns. But isn t the other 13.5 cents profit? But PROs do that for one specific reason, to trap artist. The ...
