The Gospel According To Garca By Ariel Dorfman
Learning to live authentically is not an easy task, as is attempting to define the notion of authenticity.
Staying true to oneself is not something that can be achieved by following some twelve step program.
Rather, it requires one to carefully reflect on day to day life. In The Gospel According to García by
Ariel Dorfman, the character of García challenges his students to do just that, sometimes by
unconventional and roundabout means. However, the author presents not the enigmatic García
himself, but rather the traumatic effects on his class after this teacher vanishes. Through this depiction,
the reader learns that García drilled into his students the qualities of one who leads an authentic life,
seemingly based on real experiences earlier in his life when he was pitted against authority. It is
evident that García draws a clear distinction between the lessons on life he deems important and the
nooks and crannies of education he does not. Dorfman parallels this distinction by presenting a sharp
contrast between García and the substitute teacher. This allows the reader to have a lucid view of
García s values, ones that are all derived from an authentic life and ones that he attempts to instill in
his students. For instance, one of these values, termed No. 4 of García s golden rules, challenges
people to consciously select the situations that warrant apology, rather than to apologize simply as a
matter of etiquette, as the substitute does. Additionally, García encourages

Cell Adhesion Molecules
Introduction
Cells are independent units of life. However, when a cell becomes part of an organism, it becomes part
of a tissue and organ system. Cells in a tissue are joined to each other and to the extracellular matrix
(ECM) by cell junctions. There are three kinds of cell junctions: Occluding junctions, anchoring
junctions and communication junctions. Occluding junctions occur in the epithelium where the
adjacent cells are so tightly sealed together that even small molecules cannot pass. Communicating
junctions allow the exchange of chemical and electrical signals between cells. Anchoring junctions are
the ones which attach a cell either to its neighbor or to the extracellular matrix. Formation of an
anchoring junction requires the cells to stick to each other. Various molecules mediate adhesion
between cells following which the cytoskeleton forms a structure around them. The anchoring
junctions thus formed can be of four types desmosomes, hemidesmosomes, focal adhesions and
adherens junctions. In order for a proper tissue to form, it is important for the cells of the tissue to bind
together. It is equally important to prevent the invasion and binding of other cells. Thus, cell adhesion
has to be specific. This is where the cell adhesion molecules come into play (Alberts et al. 2002).
Cell Adhesion Molecules (CAMs) Adhesion of cells to other cells and to the ECM is mediated by
certain proteins on the

Hills Like White Elephant Symbolism Essay
Hills Like White Elephants The short story Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway uses
symbolism to uncover the hidden issue that the couple is facing abortion. They can either choose to
live a selfish life with no change, or chose a life that is selfless with the change that the girl craves.
The symbols such as the hills, drinking, the station, and characters actions that are used throughout the
story are used to help the reader understand the theme of abortion. The hills symbolize a pregnant
belly, the train tracks symbolize that they have come to a cross road in their life, and the drinking
symbolizes the different views The American and the girl have on abortion. The hills are seen as two
white elephants that portray the image ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The station is placed between two lines of rails purposely to show her position at the station that
places her in between both hills forcing her to choose a side. The train station is a focal point between
the present and the future time that they have to make their decision before getting on the train.
Usually when found in stories, places such as train stations, bus stations, and airports give stories a
sense of transition or being in between experiences. Since the express wasn t coming for another 40
minutes, the topic of the abortion is brought up. It s as if the time that they are waiting for the express
from Barcelona is the amount of time that the couple has to make their decision. The couple sits at a
table in the shade, outside the building while they wait for the express from Barcelona. A bamboo
beaded curtain hangs in the doorway of the bar. Bamboo is hollow, so when you look at it from a
certain angle, it is a ring. This represents the womb as empty if they decide to go through with the
abortion. If there is a string that runs through the bamboo, it makes it seem like the space is filled,
much like a pregnant belly would be. On the American and the girl s luggage, there were labels on
them from all the hotels where they had spent nights . The luggage can be seen as an outline of their
journey that has brought them to

Preparation And Presentation Of A Company s Financial...
1 Introduction
1.1 Background to the study
Preparation and presentation of a company s financial statements is a process that is laden with the use
of estimates. The conceptual framework released by the Financial Accounting Standards Board
indicates that a company prepares financial statements with the intention of assisting investors assess
the company s future cash flow prospects (Financial Accounting Standards Board, 2010). However,
the process used by a company in assessing its cash flows is reliant on the use of estimates and
conjecture. For example, the company has to determine the fair value of its assets on an ongoing basis
if approximate value in the market is to be reflected in the financial statements. These values are
arrived ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has also been argued that the increased use of complex financial derivatives contributed to the
confusion regarding the use of fair value accounting, especially among those companies that lacked
deep insight into the operations of the financial world (Laux Leuz, 2010). Even when there was
adequate knowledge on how these derivatives were to be accounted for, there are arguments that
companies failed to interpret the guidelines as would have been expected.
1.2 Statement of the problem
Generally, there are two approaches in determining the value of a company s assets and liabilities
(Laux Leux, 2009). One, the company can use the historical cost approach. Under this method, the
purchase cost is used as the basis of determining other factors such as the asset s loss of value that
occurs over time. Therefore, a building acquired five decades ago would be presented in the financial
statements either at the cost at which it was built or the cost of land plus construction. Depreciation is
then deducted from this cost over its lifetime. The historical cost method has some obvious
drawbacks. The historical cost method disregards the occurrence of events that have the impact of
reducing the asset s value (Hitz, 2007). For example, it is possible that the cost of land will have
appreciated immensely over the

The Importance Of Classical Literature
Classical Literature A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say. Italo Calvino
Why should people read classical literature? Classics are relevant to today s time because they teach
us the value, they help us understand history and culture, you can read and re read them, and they help
us understand how we got our literature today. Classics are also entertaining and will continue to be
read throughout generations. We should read classical literature because classical literature has value.
The value is important to our culture because it shows how we got to our literature today and shows
how far we have come. The story Orpheus and Eurydice is a good example of value and morality
because Orpheus tries to get his wife back and fails. The Fates tell Orpheus not to look back at her
until they are back home. Orpheus looked back at Eurydice and when he looked back at her he lost her
for good. This story is a good example of value because it teaches us value and how we should
appreciate what we have and appreciate the second chances we get in life. The history and culture
behind classical literature is our history because it helped us get to where we are now and shows how
we wrote and told our stories. The history in classical literature can be true or sometimes true. With
myths, some of the stories have some truth in them or the story really happened but if that is the case,
most of the time the storyteller makes assumptions about the event. In the

Describe the properties of . . . and. Radiation. Things should be including:
Their range in air
What they are stopped by
Their penetrating and ionising powers
How they are affected by electrical and magnetic fields.
How they are commonly detected.
Any other properties.
Alpha, beta and gamma come from nuclear of an atom and they called radioactive, because it gives off
radiation. These radiations absorb by different thickness of materials such as: Alpha radiation only
travel few centimetre in the air, beta radiation travels tens centimetre in the air however gamma travel

Beta radiation is an electron with the charge of 1. Its atomic number is 1 and atomic mass is 0. It is
more penetrating than alpha radiation plus, has a less ionising power than alpha. It absorbed by thin
aluminium sheet and used to control the thickness of different material such as thickness of the paper,
plastic and aluminium. They use a detector to check if there is more or less particle being released or
absorb. If the material is thicker then it need to the material will start to absorb the particle however if
the material is too thin more beta particle will start to pass through, that s how they finds out the
thickness of the material. It is not very dangerous if it goes into our body because it usually get
through the body, however it is very dangerous if it outside the body because it can penetrate the skin
and cause damage to human cells. It is deflected by electrical and magnetic field because it has
negative charge as I said positive and negative attract to each other.
Gamma radiation has 0 charges and 0 atomic mass and atomic number. It has a very high penetrating
power than alpha and beta because it does not stop for many centimetres. The ionising power of
gamma radiation is very low according to alpha and beta radiation. It is used to treat cancer and testing
equipment; however it can be very dangerous for human health if it comes in contact with

Thaginian War Research Paper
In 467 BC Syracuse would win its freedom from tyrannical rule and become a democratic society.
Most Greek states, seeing that this was possible, quickly followed suit. By 404 BC, at the end of the
Peloponnesian war, Athens no longer had any influence on the island. (For more information on this
war read Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War). Later, Carthage, being allied to the Persian
Empire, invaded Sicily on two specific occasions in the fifth century during the Peloponnesian war.
The first invasion by the Carthaginian army was led, in 480 B.C., by a man named Hamilcar the
Magonid (not to be confused with Hamilcar Barca of the First Punic wars), who later died in Himera.
The second invasion was carried out two generations later in 409 B.C. by Hamilcar the Magonid s
grandson, Hannibal (again not to be confused with famous Hannibal of the Second Punic wars).
Hannibal assaulted the island from the west coast and marched on Himera. He slaughtered over 3000
Himerion citizens to avenge the death of his grandfather. He had gained control of almost 1/3 of Sicily
in less than three months and returned home to Carthage. In 406 B.C. he would return and sack
Akragas (Agrigento). Dionysius I began the reign of Dionysian rule as he took control of Syracuse in

Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development Self Efficacy ...
In Vygotsky s concept, zone of proximal development he explains that it is the distance between a
child s developmental level, which is determined by independent problem solving and the level of
potential development as determined through problem solving under adult guidance (Vygotsky, 1978,
p174). This concept is highly used in education and in classrooms. For example, I work with a student
who is eighteen years of age and has intellectual disabilities. During our morning routine he enjoys
working on puzzles. He has a difficult time putting the puzzle together so I help him with clues and or
prompt him to the puzzle piece that fits. He moves onto a new puzzle once I no longer have to give
him clues or prompts. As I have tracked his progress he has needed less prompt than he did three
months ago. The goal of this concept is that, as an adult collaborates with a child to help them move
from where they are to where they should be with help by accomplishing the exercise through
prompts, clues, modeling, and etc. Bandura has studied self efficacy, which is the extent or strength of
one s belief in one s own ability to complete tasks and reach goals. Self efficacy can affect all types of
behaviors like academics, social and recreational. A child might have the ability to accomplish a task,
but if they do not feel like they are capable of doing so, then they may fail or may not attempt the task.
For example, in a study difficult math problems were given to children with

Descriptive Essay About Christmas
Ever since I was younger, decorating our Christmas tree has always been a big deal in my family. We
decorate just about two weeks before Christmas, always on a Sunday night after our family dinner.
This night has always been special to me, in fact it is probably one of my favorite parts of the
Christmas season. My grandparents who are local come over, we turn on Christmas music, and the
fireplace. We have Christmas cookies with hot chocolate and just make a night of it. The last part of
the night, but arguably the most important, is when my Dad places our glass angel atop the tree. It
signifies, to me at least, the reason we celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. However, lately, I
ve noticed a recent trend that confuses me. In the past couple years I ve noticed that people, even those
in my own extended family, use items either from popular culture, or just random things they find
important, as their tree toppers. My Uncle Mike and Aunt Kelly use a Phillies baseball hat, my Aunt
Maureen and Uncle Steve use a personalized set of Mickey Mouse ears from their honeymoon, my
friend Nicoletta and her family simply use a plain, old santa hat. I grew up to believe and see
Christmas as a religious holiday, we go to mass on Christmas Eve and on Christmas day, it s just a part
of our tradition. Growing up, I just assumed everyone else held these ideas and traditions as well. So
to see people so close to me change something I thought was so sacred and something everyone else

Portland Is The Largest City For A Diverse Population,...
As the original commerce center of Oregon, Portland is the largest city in the state and home to a
diverse population, culture, recreation, and history (Ash, Jylnne). It ranks 17th in terms of population
of metropolitan areas in the United States (Park, Peter ). Portland is known for its character, as well as
its environmental consciousness, top breweries, and food carts. In a 2009 Pew Research Center study,
Portland ranked as the eighth most popular American city according to where participants would
choose to live (For Nearly Half of America). It has become a popular city for millennials as well as
those escaping the high cost of living in California. The influx of people has caused home prices in
Portland to skyrocket in the last quarter century. Between 1990 and 2000, the median home prices for
the area surrounding Portland increased by 114% compared to 46% nationally (Anderson, Susan).

Traditional Compatibilism Examples
When it comes to free will, the traditional compatibilist has a simple outlook on a subject that any
average human being can grasp. On the outside, it may look confusing, but traditional compatibilism
is simple once you get through the vocabulary and a few examples. In this essay, I will cover the
traditional compatibilists analysis on free will, give an example of a counterexample to traditional
compatibilism, and my thoughts on why or why not the counterexample is successful in rejecting the
traditional compatibilist analysis of free will. To start off, the traditional compatibilist suggests two
conditions for freedom (Rauhut, 2011, p. 90). One of these conditions is that the specific action is
caused by that person s own will. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, can John act otherwise? The brain injury he suffers from prevents John from having the
desire to consume white things, like the glass of milk. This case is supposed to show that John does
not have free will since he is acting out of his desire to not drink the milk since it s white, but he could
not have acted otherwise. The case satisfies condition number one for the traditional compatibilist
analysis of free will. John is acting on his will to drink something that is not white. While this may be
true, this case tries to say that John could not have done any other action, failing the second condition
of the analysis of free will from a traditional compatibilist view. In my eyes, I do not believe that the
Brain Injury case is a counterexample to the traditional compatibilist analysis of free will. In the case,
John is having the desire to drink. Whether this be water or milk, is determined by his feelings,
desires, hopes, beliefs, and wishes. Drinking the water is a desire that John has. Because of this, the
first condition for the traditional compatibilist analysis of free will is achieved. The second condition
for the traditional compatibilist analysis of free will is that the person is acting without any constraints.
While John cannot have the desire to drink milk, that does not stop him from actually drinking the
milk. For example, I hate seafood. As of right now, I do not have the desire to eat

The Issues Associates with Acute Renal Failure
Acute renal failure is the most common kidney disease that exists today. It occurs when blood flow to
the kidneys is in some way compromised which causes a sudden stop in kidney function. Acute renal
failure is a very serious complication for a already hospitalized patient since they are already in a
vulnerable state from staying in the hospital, in fact, it is the most common cause of death amongst
hospitalized patients, and most commonly they occur because of a hospital workers error. Acute renal
failure causes many serious problems for patients, including abnormal electrolyte and acid base
balance, excess in fluid volume, and an excess in nitrogenous wastes. Acute renal failure can have
either pre renal, intra renal, or post renal causes. According to WebMD (2011), the pathophysiology of
pre renal acute renal failure is a sudden reduction in blood flow to the kidney causes a loss of kidney
function. In pre renal acute renal failure, there is nothing wrong with the kidney itself. The
pathophysiology of intra renal acute renal failure is when there is damage directly done to the kidneys
from either inflammation, infection, drugs, toxins, or a reduced blood supply to the kidneys. The
pathophysiology of post renal acute renal failure is when there is suddenly an obstruction of the flow
of urine because of a tumor, kidney stones, an enlarged prostate, or an injury. At the end of the post
renal acute renal failure stage, the next stage is chronic renal failure. As the stages

Candide Vs. Blake s Songs Of Innocence

Candide compared to Blake s Songs of Innocence
In 1764 Voltaire wrote one of the world s greatest satires, known as Candide. Candide translates from
French as meaning innocent, which accurately describes the main character of this story. Candide is
living in the castle of Baron in Westphalia at this point, and has just become romantically interested in
the Barons sister, Cunegonde. After making advances towards this fine maiden, and being caught in
the act, Candide is exiled from the castle of Westphalia. Growing up in this castle, Candide was taught
by one of the greatest philosophers of this time, Dr. Pangloss. This led to Candide believing the castle

In Voltaire s Candide , the message being portrayed is that all human beings have the ability to set
their own fate. Human beings are intelligent, adaptive organisms that have lived on this earth for
hundreds of thousands of years. Their destinies are not given to them, but earned throughout their
lives throughout challenging circumstances and experiences. Also portrayed in this story is the idea
that humans, deep down, represent what is good in the world, meaning we are the ones making the
world a better place to live. This idea is similarly shared in Blake s Songs of Innocence when he
advocates for the better treatment of children growing up in a world of poverty. These ideas clash
when you consider the lives of these poverty stricken children, and how that will socially and mentally
impact their lives and how they interact with the world. Children growing up in such circumstances
are more prone to violent and erratic behavior, decreasing their chances at improving the world. When
it comes down to it, this is the only world we have, and we have to protect what we have, while
constantly building onto its already in place social establishments. Children that are born into poverty
are not destined to be there, and with a little push in the right direction can alter their futures and work
for a better tomorrow. Candide believed that everything in the world happens for a reason, giving
children living in poverty a whim of hope for the

The Importance Of Geographic Literacy
Geography, it s not just maps and knowing about landforms. Geography is about a who, what, where,
why and how. It raises awareness of things around the world and provides information about
understanding conflicts and solving them. (Murray, Dr. Matthew) Dr. Edelson points out that, While
the impacts of any particular far reaching decision may be small, the cumulative impact of the
decisions made by millions of people are enormous. ( What is Geo literacy? 2012) Geography is
something all citizens should know about, everyone should be aware of what is happening around
them. The main focus of teaching students how to be geoliterate is so they will know the
consequences resulting from basic decisions. As the curriculum continues to change in schools
throughout the nation, geography has become nonexistent within the classroom. Besides the basic
geographical features, like landforms and oceans, most of this generation knows nothing about
geography. Even sometimes these simple concepts are unreachable for students and many young
adults making them geo illiterate.
Geographic Literacy, as described by Dr. Daniel C. Edelson, has three key concepts; understanding
human and natural systems, geographic reasoning and systematic decision making. He describes a geo
literate student as not only one who understands geography, but one who understands that the Earth is
interconnected and the decisions we make over our lifetime have long lasting effects. They should also
able to comprehend that the relationship between human systems and their interactions and the impact
it puts on our environment. (2012) Another way to describe Geographic Literacy would mean to be
better equipped to better understand the complexity of the world, how our decisions affect others, and
the interconnectedness of this rich, diverse, and not so large world. It means that one should know
what the effects are of the decisions we make daily. (Baskerville, Brian) Regardless of if the decision
is where to live or

requires geo literacy. ( What is Geo Literacy? ) Whether these decisions are riding a bike or driving a

Greek Women Vs Athenian Women
Ancient Greece had standards for its women that dictated how women were expected to compose and
behave themselves, in both the home and in public. Women were largely expected to behave
themselves in accordance to Greek mythological character Penelope, whom was feminine and
particularly dedicated to her spouse, which confirmed the value of chastity. The concept illustrated by
Penelope was rejected by Spartan women, whom challenged the norms of extreme femininity and
were even expected to partake in rigorous physical instruction (Germain, 2013). Euripides, a tragedian
of classical Athens even stated in his productions, No Spartan girl could grow up modest even if she
wanted to. You never find them at home; no, they go out with bare thighs and loose clothes, to wrestle
and run races along with the young men (Vernant, Lambert, 1995). Regulations commanding authority

Marx s Dream And The American Dream
Marx s Dream It all started with a dream, the American Dream . When first thought of, the American
Dream was the idea of freedom and equality that America offered, as well as the concept that working
hard can lead to success by anyone. The American Dream has since shifted to the idea that you can
have it all, from a house to a well paying job that can support your family. However, the Dream is
centered around private property and capital, and through Marx s eyes, that is where it is flawed. The
American Dream is achieved in a Capitalist society, but according to Marx, with Capitalism comes
alienation. Looking at the American Dream from Marx s standpoint, is it truly attainable by everyone?

unrealistic. In a Capitalist society, it is hard for people to break boundaries to swiftly move up the
hierarchy because of class wars and power struggles. In Marx s sense, strives towards the American
Dream can only be reached through the perfect utopia of Communism. In accordance with Marx,
Communism is the one thing that can make this Dream possible. In a Capitalist society, class divides
people, and Marx says, the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles (59).
A society not divided among class would allow for production and product to be in everyone s hands;
and if wage labor did not create capital then workers cannot be exploited. A Communist society allows
for total equality amongst all citizens once the lower class successfully revolts. Under Communism,
everyone would be working together using the ruling general interest in order to achieve the American

Career Profile Of The Transition From School
I. INTRODUCTION
The transition from school to work can be challenging for students. It is our job to help you identify
your goal, acquire job searching skills and get prepare for the outside world. Janice Tester (Career
advisor, McGill University) Janice Tester has been working as a Career Advisor for McGill Career
planning Service Office (CaPS) for over 17 years. In 2014, I started to serve as a peer educator in
CaPS office and Janice became my supervisor since then. Despite the fact that we worked closely
together in the past two years, I never get a chance to know her accomplishments in the job and how
she perceive her work. This became my initial motivation to interview her. Another reason is that,
given the importance of career advising service in McGill, its performance is difficult to evaluate. A
throughout analysis on this position can be helpful for its performance improvement. Several
expectations for this position were developed during my working in CaPS. Firstly, I expected career
advisors to be business orientated, with backgrounds in human resource management. Secondly, since
their works involve mostly one on one consulting with students, interactions with colleagues are
limited and unnecessary. Thirdly, I expected that, career advisors enjoy a high level of initiative.
Instead of taking commands directly from their supervisor, they have the

Five Rules For Research Paper
In 1967 when Sister Corita Kent came up with a set of ten rules or highly thoughtout life guidlines,
her intentions were not to make them set rules, but rather, suggestions open for interpertation. As I was
reading over the rules, I saw them as simple life lessons that could help me become more succesful as
a human being. These rules expand past college, they take my thought process into real life situations
and how they can be used in the future to better myself. As I was going down the list a few rules really
stood out to me; both Rules two and three, Rule five, and Rule nine. These four made me actually stop
and really dig deep into researching their meaning. Both two and three go together so I interperted
them as one. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To be disciplined is to follow in a good way. To be self disciplined is to follow in a better way. I
interpereted the rule very crucially, meaning choosing the right person to follow is crucial to your
future as a human being. All it takes for your life to go downhill is following in the footsteps of a
terrible influence. Even though choosing a role model is a very smart thing to, your own self should be
the biggest inspiration in your life. You should believe in yourself before believing in anybody else.
The reason I believe this rule is so important because it stresses that influencing yourself is far more
beneficial than being influenced by others even though its ok to be infuenced by others! And when
you have been self influenced you will begin to build structure with yourself leading to self
diciplinary.
Finally Rule Nine states: Be happy whenever you can manage it. Enjoy yourself. Its lighter than you
think. This rule is my favorite because I believe its the realest rule of them all. Life is to short to not
enjoy the little things that blossum from the darkest moments. When stress levels rise you tend to
think that it is the end of the world, but even from the hardest of the hardest times if there is a few
seconds to be happy, make sure you charish that little moment. The hard times that drag you down can
be extremely dense, but the happiness that can be shed from that is so delicate and

Strengthening Of The Corporate Criminal Justice System
Introduction
A recent debate has centred on the issue of strengthening companies liabilities for their illegal
conducts. To prevent tax evasion, banks and foreign dodgers meet strict liability criminal penalties
(Wintour 2015). Treanor (2014) reports that if banks fail, new criminal responsibilities will be held by
bankers. Accordingly the Curzon and Richards (2007), corporate liability is the extension of liability
for the commission of offenses to companies . Gooch and Williams (2015) define the corporate crime
as the acts or omissions of a company . Corporate criminal liability is the liability imposed upon a
corporation for any criminal act done by any natural person (US legal website [no date]). According to

The effects of too many concussions and other injuries sustained during contact sports can carry on for
the rest of your life if the case is severe enough. Most of the time, however, concussions are very
minor and only require a short time period of rest. If enough concussions do occur during an athlete s
life, say the amount a professional football player or hockey player might have endured, chronic
traumatic encephalopathy could take place. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy occurs when an athlete
endures repeated blows to the head that resulted in concussions or a secondary blow to the head while
the brain is still recovering from a concussion. Usually, the brain returns back to its normal state if it

Sports are not for everybody, not only because of talent level, but because a certain mindset is to be
had to be successful at any sport. A commitment is made. Forty hours of practice a week, the average
amount of time spent practicing for football players, all for a one hour game, the average time of one
game of college football, takes dedication. That is not even counting the time spent icing, resting, and
studying the playbook or film, not to mention the school work to be kept up with for college and high
school students. Most athletes have become used to the grind and juggling three or four time
consuming activities all at one time while being successful at each. Waking up at the break of dawn,
following a schedule, and suffering consequences when a bad choice is made creates character and
discipline that is often needed for many little league, high school, and college athletes. The most
important non tangible thing sports teach anyone is how to get back up after falling, how to get
knocked down but get right back up and keep going, how to move on from failure and overcome it,
focusing on the next important part of life. These skills of determination and courage taught through
sports are essential for being successful in any part of life and are hard to come by anywhere

The Disitive And Positive Impacts Of Globalization
Globalisation
Introduction
Globalisation is considered one of the greatest milestones that have happened to the world. Before 25
years, no one imagines that s/he can buy a shirt or even a mobile cover from a different country and it
will be shipped in few days. Although the term globalisation is founded in the nineteenth century, the
application of this concept become obvious and widely use in the last 25 years (Dicken, 2007). The
next section of this report defines globalisation term. The third section mentions some of the positive
and negative impacts of globalisations. The fourth section discusses the impacts of globalisation on
business operation. Finally, the last section concludes the report.
1. What is globalisation?
Many researchers and organisations have defined the term globalisation. For instance, The United
Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines globalisation as the
ongoing process that is linking people, neighbourhoods, cities, regions and countries much more
closely together than they have ever been (UNESCO, 2010). Furthermore, Parker B. defines
gloabalisation as a process whereby worldwide interconnections in virtually every sphere of activity
are growing (Parker, 2005: 5). In general, most of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Submission And Action Of Religious Heroines
Submission and Action of Religious Heroines Written expressly to convey the main beliefs and
principles of their respective religions, the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, and the Hebrew Bible are
composed as epic histories and biographies of mythic figures, whose lives act as fables to teach these
principles to the educated, uninitiated believers. In most cases, these fables are told through a heroic
male character, blessed by God or a god, who fulfills a destiny defined by his relationship with divine
will, often as a leader of the community or nation, or as a savior of his people. However, in rare cases
these stories will accentuate a particular value through the use of female protagonists, thereby placing

She notes that the faithful thing for the people to do... was to surrender, referring to the established
tradition within Biblical texts of trusting God to protect all his worshipers while the nation of Israel
did nothing in its own defense (Day 77). Day believes that Judith s reaction, calling the Bethulian
leaders faithless for choosing not to take action against the army of Holofernes, is therefore strongly
contradictory to traditional teachings. However, I would argue that rather than indicating Judith is
slightly impious, Judith s declaration reflects a deeper understanding of the nature of divine will.
Judith expresses that God will act through her, and that rather than perform a miracle, He will
empower her to defeat Holofernes. Moreover, Judith is proven correct, as her actions are the salvation
of the city of Bethulia. While she gives due credit to God in her explanation of the events at
Holofernes camp, Judith is nevertheless a key instigator of the events, as well as a conduit for the
author to declare that, in essence, all that transpires is God s will, and therefore whatever action
mankind takes must also be divinely ordained. This assertion implicitly permits Judith to take action
against Holofernes, where otherwise a woman in such a compromising and dangerous situation may
be shunned by her community for being unchaste, or for being perceived as such. Judith here takes on
the characteristics of a masculine hero,

Student Retention Is A Growing Problem
Many colleges and universities throughout the United States and several other countries face a
common problem. Student retention is a growing problem across the nation for all ethnic groups and
all ages. Each individual who chooses to drop out of school has their own personal reasons as to why
they do. However, many drops out can be completely avoided. When students drop out they are not
clearly thinking about how it s going to affect their future, the future of their children and even
grandchildren. Although there are several reasons as to why students drop out of school, we will be
exploring a few as it relates to why student retention is a growing problem.
Transitioning into higher education presents challenges for all students, whether it s their age or
previous educational history. Numerous individuals are extremely nervous as they are entering into an
advanced environment such as higher education. This because college is a new learning environment
at a completely different level. However, freshmen find college to be difficult at first because it s
harder for them to adjust. That s why many universities should have student centers in place to help
students. Student centers give students the pathway for flexible learning as it results in being
successful in higher education (Baužienė Vosyliūtė 2015).
Lin and Tsai (2008) used a quantitative approach to understanding student retention; however, they
used their research to understand students loyalty. As fast as

History.
Lev Vygotsky, a Soviet psychologist created a theory which believes that humans need social
interaction for their cognitive development. Gallagher (1999) states Basically Vygotsky s theory
suggests that development depends on interaction with people and the tools that the culture provides to
help form their own view of the world . Another part of this theory is the Zone of Proximal
Development. The idea here is that a student will complete a task that they cannot do alone, with the
help of a more skilled peer, or even the guidance of an instructor. Throughout this process the child
will become more socialized and then in turn, this will improve their cognitive development
(Gallagher 1999).
The Benefits of Cooperative Learning. There are some subjects, where working in groups is practiced
more frequently than others. For example, many students are use to working in groups on a science
experiment, or working as a team in physical education courses, or maybe even for a project in social
studies. However, working with their peers

The Battle Of Tippecanoe By William Henry Harrison
The Battle of Tippecanoe was one of the major steps towards the War of 1812. It took place on
November 8, 1811, in a clearing near Prophet s Town. It was also perhaps one of the most
controversial battles in the War of 1812. Although a peace treaty had been made one day prior before
the Battle of Tippecanoe, the Native Americans attacked, which caused the American soldiers to fight
back, who were led by General William Henry Harrison. The Native Americans had been led by
Tecumseh, a Shawnee Indian Chief. The Battle of Tippecanoe was a controversial battle which the
Natives Americans started, and ultimately, lost.
Tecumseh was a Shawnee Indian chief who had been born around 1768 near Springfield, Ohio.
During the early 1800s, he started to oppose the United States, and attempted to create a confederation
of Indian Tribes to rebel against the United States. One of the main reasons Tecumseh opposed the
United States was the fact that white people were squatting on Native American land, and was forcing
his people out. Although Tecumseh opposed whites, he knew how to speak their language. Tecumseh
was described as a six foot tall man with fine features. He had been rumored to be fluent in English,
and most surprisingly, also in French. He also managed to turn his brother s religious teachings into
political movements in order to get his fellow Native Americans to support his movement. [Collins, pg

Junk Food Tax Paper
ABSTRACT
Obesity is an epidemic that is sweeping the United States at a rapid speed, and it kills. Obesity is
responsible for killing more people than anything else, except for smoking. It affects people of all
ages, races, income levels, and geographic locations. Obesity brings with it a myriad of problems that
the individuals who suffer from it face, as well as social problems that are felt by people in all walks
of life. There are astronomical costs that are attributed to it, being paid by society in the form of
medical fees, unemployment benefits, and other miscellaneous costs. This report proposes that these
costs and problems need to be addressed, and one avenue through which they can be is a junk food
tax. This report ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, these issues will be positively affected by this proposal as well.
It is also important to note that this problem is not isolated to a specific group of individuals, although
there are groups that are higher risk than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), anyone can become obese but ...the risk for becoming overweight and obese tends
to be higher among members of racial and ethnic minority populations such as African Americans and
Hispanic Americans. In addition, the disease tends to be more common among individuals of lower
socio economic status (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2005). This indicates that there
are groups whose members are more likely to become obese. Because of the trend for junk food to
cost less than more healthy alternatives, those who have less access to financial resources are more
likely to be come obese.
As serious as obesity is, this issue is not a new one for our nation. Obesity has been a problem that has
been addressed and studied since before the early 1930s, when doctors began to see a link between
obesity and shorter life span (Pool, 2001, p. 7). Since then, and most noticeably in the last twenty
years, obesity has swept our nation to become a condition that plagues more than 60 million adults in
America, nearly one in three adults in this country (Figure 1). Jessica Bazzi, RN, stated that in

Women in the Progressive Era Essay
In the 1890s, American women emerged as a major force for social reform. Millions joined civic
organizations and extended their roles from domestic duties to concerns about their communities and
environments. These years, between 1890 and 1920, were a time of many social changes that later
became known as the Progressive Era. In this time era, millions of Americans organized associations
to come up with solutions to the many problems that society was facing, and many of these problems
were staring American women right in the face.
Women began to speak out against the laws that were deliberately set against them. Throughout this
time period, women were denied the right to vote in all federal and most state held elections. Women

citizens to shape public policy and create institutions.
Progressivism generally took two forms: Political and Social reform. What most social reformers

Advantages Of Self-Driving Car
Should Self Driving Cars Become a Normal Method of Transportation?
Through improvements of technology during the 21st century, new inventions to the modern day car
have been applied and the future has arrived. The self driving car facilitates the idea that humans don t
have to drive the car, but rather the car can drive itself. The cars recently debuted after being a concept
in the making for several years. One example of the car in the making is Tesla, a car producing
company, that initiated a test run of these cars calling the setting, autopilot (Source 3). The setting
allowed the driver to sit back and relax as the car attempted to drive without assistance. The self
driving car should be a normal mode of transportation because they reduce accidents, are accessible to
all ages, and are cost efficient. Self driving cars prevent accidents by reacting to stimuli faster than
humans. Associated Press writes, The system can brake when it spots obstacles and keep cars in lanes.
(Source 3) The cars can sense and save one when falling asleep from a long road trip or simply a night
out. Furthermore, less accidents result in less traffic, which will result in decongested roads. The ...

Describe The Importance Of Road Safety Inspections
Road Safety Inspections
Road safety inspections are important. The material explicitly describes the importance of safety
inspections. Without road inspections, the streets and highways would be a chaos for commuters
(Ward, Otto Linkenbach, 2014). Just imagined if the overgrown shrubs and trees hid the traffic road
signs and directional signs pointing in the wrong way. This would be a recipe for disaster. Additional
lives would be at risk by this potential roadway hazards. Identifying potential roadway hazards timely
may reduce the mortality rate (Ward, Otto Linkenbach, 2014).
The Office of Traffic Safety and other similar agencies are working diligently to develop a remedial
measure to save drivers lives (DOT, 2011). To alleviate the road hazards in Minnesota, the road safety
inspector conducts routine safety inspections. The safety inspector examines the highways,
construction signs, bridges, and obstructions that may block the motorists view (DOT, 2011). The
State of Minnesota is vulnerable to various potential hazards. These hazards are associated with man
made and natural disasters that threatens the loss of life and property.
Inspector Role
An inspection is a critical element that detects and responds to potential hazards. For example, the
inspector ensures that the road signs are visible both day and night. In Minnesota, public safety
department encourages the citizens to report any potential road hazards like potholes and damaged
road signs.

Latin America Geography
The physical geography of Latin America and the Caribbean greatly affect where people live by
making some places are more desirable than others. One examples is the Panama Canal, which is runs
across the Panama Isthmus in Central America. The Panama Canal is a large man made canal, that
connects the two largest bodies of water in the world. People live very closely to the Panama Canal,
meaning it has a high population density there and in the surrounding areas. The population around the
canal is 250 1,249 people per square mile. People tend to live near this feature because the canal and
water provide so many valuable assets, such as sea animals for marine jobs, boats for repairmen and
traders, transportation, tourism, swimming, and many more. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The river is mainly located in Brazil but goes through several other surrounding countries, and
eventually empties into the Atlantic ocean. According to the density map not many people live near
this physical feature, only about 2.5 24 people per square mile, in some places 250 1,249. A decent
amount of people live here because it is near water which has a plentiful amount of resources, as
aforementioned. It also is a big place for wildlife studies and tourism, but this water is unsafe and has
many dangerous creatures inhabiting it. These circumstances are more beneficial for some people and
disadvantages for other, which means not as many people live near there as other rivers, but still a
good amount. Another example is the Amazon Rainforest, also known as the Lungs of the Earth. It is
mostly in Brazil but is in a few nearby countries as well. The Rainforest is located on the Amazon
Basin and winds around the Amazon River. The physical feature covers 1.7 billion acres, produces
over 20% of the worlds oxygen and is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. According to the
population density map not many people live near the Amazon Rainforest, only about less than 2.5 24

The Role Of Offensive Cyber Operations On Chinese Military...
Draft Research Paper Matthew Marchant Professor Roehrig TSDM Security Strategies September 23,
2016 The Role and Implications of Offensive Cyber Operations in Chinese Military Strategy
Contemporary news media feature regular reports of the interconnectedness of modern economies,
societies, and militaries, highlighting the associated benefits and vulnerabilities of a networked
commons. While Chinese businessmen, like those of other nations, have capitalized on technological
advancements to make fortunes in electronic commerce and the networked economy, Chinese political
and military leaders have likewise displayed an understanding of the threats and opportunities posed
by the virtual world. While China, in particular organs of the People s Liberation Army (PLA), has
historically and will likely continue conducting cyber espionage and network exploitation for
information gathering and related purposes, for reasons nested in the individual, state, and
international levels, and assuming the classic rational actor paradigm of decision making, it is
increasingly likely that offensive cyber operations (OCO) will be preferred elements of China s
military strategy in the coming years. For reasons including an increasing American ability to detect,
counter, and reciprocate OCO as well as cost efficiency and regional factors and regional power
dynamics, China will increasingly choose to target U.S. allies vice U.S. interests directly. This will
consequently create a requirement

Write An Essay About Those Who Die During Conflict
Croatia. Summer 2015. I am sitting in the back of a stranger s car on the way to a cemetery as a little
girl in a yellow tutu reaches into her white sparkly purse on the seat between us and pulls out a
seemingly endless group of bobble head pets. We don t speak each other s language so we
communicate through hand signals while she tries to teach me the Croatian alphabet. She laughs at my
funny pronunciation, and I smile at her enthusiasm for spelling every passing sign. I was traveling
through Eastern Croatia with a professor examining cemeteries of soldiers and civilians from the
Yugoslav War of Dissolution in hopes of finding out the answer to a question people have been asking
for centuries about those who die during conflict ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a child who slept with a map over my head and whose parents joked had more space for books in
my bed than me, I found in them and news my childhood heroes and some of the stories out of which I
would find my passions: from Edward R. Murrow s broadcasts from London an interest in war
reporting, from Abraham Lincoln s oratory a desire to understand speechwriting, from John Colville s
The Fringes of Power: 10 Downing Street Diaries a love of public service, and from a BBC news clip
of a family under siege in a cemetery a desire to understand the roots of conflict in the Balkans and
reconciliation in the time since. While at the University of Tennessee I have taken the stories I
encountered growing up and continually worked to find answers this quest has led me to stand on the
stairs of St. Martin in the Fields, visit cemeteries in the Balkans, stand beneath the water tower in
Vukovar, and work with the handwritten copies of speeches of Tennessee Congressmen. At Oxford I
would continue my search for questions and my desire to understand just a little bit better the stories
of the individuals around

Unforgiven Film Techniques
Unforgiven is an incredible movie directed and produced by Clint Eastwood. Clint Eastwood also
plays the lead role as William Munny. Unforgiven revolves around a pig farmer who has long retired
from his outlaw and killer ways; however, due to the daily struggles of the west, Munny needs money
to support his children. Unforgiven is relevant to the class due to our studies of the settlement out
west. The three literary devices best captured in Unforgiven are setting, plot, and characterization. The
first literary device Clint Eastwood effectively captures is the setting in Unforgiven. The most notable
is the opening scene. In the opening scene we see Munny digging the grave of his late wife Claudia.

Claudia s help, Murry has turned from his murderous and drunken ways. Now that Murry is left to
fend on his own, he has decided to return to his old ways. He feels guilty because Claudia would not
want this, but he feels that he must do it for his children. Murry reflects on his old ways and feels
guilty. Ned tells him that he is not like that anymore and to no worry about it. Ultimately due to Ned s
death, Munny begins to drink and returns to his murderous ways. With the effective use of
characterization, the audience was able to sympathize with Munny, due to the death of his wife. The
audience also felt apathy once he returned to his old

The Change Clause In Government Contract Law
Contract clauses can cover many facets of commercial and business interests; whether it be
government or civilian and can take on various forms. Contract clauses are enforceable under federal
and state laws as well as any other part of a contract. Out of all the general clauses confined in
Government contracts, the Change Clause would seem to be the most important. It stands in the focus
of the contractual arrangement with other clauses denoting to and borrowing its basic practice as some
usual way of doing things. By advantage of this clause, the Government is permitted unilaterally to
alter the contract and hold the contractor to perform under the unilaterally changed contract. It is this
important departure from the old concept of mutuality, with its pointed inferences on the non
governmental party, that sets the Government contract different from the standard commercial
contract. Incidentally, this rare arrangement is altogether to the disadvantage of the contractor. The
Changes clause affords for an equitable compensation, if it is fitting. Additionally, the Changes clause,
in linking with the Disputes clause, offers an opening of reprieve if a dispute arises as to what is
reasonable compensation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Overall Concept Of Public Relations
The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss various image problems or publicity needs within a
company through their specific Public Relations Campaigns. Through the study and research of this
topic, deeper understanding of the overall concept of Public Relations will hopefully be attained. A
corporate identity or image is the comprehensive image of a corporation, business or firm from the
view of the public, including customers, employees and investors. It is essential that good corporate
image is achieved within a corporation, so that the public may view the corporation as positive or
beneficial. Therefore, if the image of a corporation is affected negatively or perceived by the public to
be bad, it can damage not only the corporation s reputation and credibility, but also its appeal to the
public. Publicity is the distribution of information with the goal of increasing awareness among the
public on a specific concept or entity. This entity may range from a person to an organization; it can be
an object or an idea; it could be anything thinkable. As long as there is a concept or entity, it can be
publicized. The main point of publicity is to have the public gain awareness on something. In the
business world, publicity is usually used to create awareness and understanding of a corporation,
therefore increasing popularity and overall image. There is a famous saying, There is no such thing as
bad publicity. This sentence is true of publicity in the

Essay On Medieval Armor
Armor is any covering worn as defense against weapons. (Dictionary.com) During the Medieval era,
Knights wore armor to protect themselves and prevent injury during battles. It was expensive to buy
and took a long time to make base on styles. Over the years Armor has been easy to make and helpful
during battles. (Medieval Armor) Medieval armor, first started with padded garments and chain mail
were used. Armor was made for protection against new and lethal weapons. Armor was getting better

An Article From American Pregnancy
A new phenomenon, placentophagy, has taken the United States by storm. Placentophagy is the
concept of consuming the placenta after giving birth to a child in order to receive specific health
benefits. Controversy has ensued over whether or not the placenta is actually beneficial to mothers.
The pro argument states that placentophagy is in fact advantageous. An article from American
Pregnancy, entitled Placenta Encapsulation explains that the basis of placentophagy relies heavily on
anecdotes from mothers who have tried out the procedure and supported the practice. Another article
from the website Placenta Benefits explains under their health and wellness tab how exactly
consuming the placenta can be valuable. The page has a list of all the benefits, including related
articles that go into further detail on a specific subject. Annette McDermott explains in her article that
a study was done on one hundred and eight nine participants, and seventy six percent said they
experienced positive results when consuming placenta. Yet another article by Michele Zipp also
mentions the previously mentioned study, and says that more studies will be conducted in the future. It
also mentioned that mothers who had another kid would continue to consume the placenta, and in
different ways, which suggests they had experienced positive effects. One last blog from whattoexpect
talks about the positive effects of placenta ingestion mentions facts about the placenta, such as the fact
that it

  • 2. The Gospel According To Garca By Ariel Dorfman Learning to live authentically is not an easy task, as is attempting to define the notion of authenticity. Staying true to oneself is not something that can be achieved by following some twelve step program. Rather, it requires one to carefully reflect on day to day life. In The Gospel According to García by Ariel Dorfman, the character of García challenges his students to do just that, sometimes by unconventional and roundabout means. However, the author presents not the enigmatic García himself, but rather the traumatic effects on his class after this teacher vanishes. Through this depiction, the reader learns that García drilled into his students the qualities of one who leads an authentic life, seemingly based on real experiences earlier in his life when he was pitted against authority. It is evident that García draws a clear distinction between the lessons on life he deems important and the nooks and crannies of education he does not. Dorfman parallels this distinction by presenting a sharp contrast between García and the substitute teacher. This allows the reader to have a lucid view of García s values, ones that are all derived from an authentic life and ones that he attempts to instill in his students. For instance, one of these values, termed No. 4 of García s golden rules, challenges people to consciously select the situations that warrant apology, rather than to apologize simply as a matter of etiquette, as the substitute does. Additionally, García encourages ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Study On Cell Adhesion Molecules Name: Instructor s Name: Course: Date: Cell Adhesion Molecules Introduction Cells are independent units of life. However, when a cell becomes part of an organism, it becomes part of a tissue and organ system. Cells in a tissue are joined to each other and to the extracellular matrix (ECM) by cell junctions. There are three kinds of cell junctions: Occluding junctions, anchoring junctions and communication junctions. Occluding junctions occur in the epithelium where the adjacent cells are so tightly sealed together that even small molecules cannot pass. Communicating junctions allow the exchange of chemical and electrical signals between cells. Anchoring junctions are the ones which attach a cell either to its neighbor or to the extracellular matrix. Formation of an anchoring junction requires the cells to stick to each other. Various molecules mediate adhesion between cells following which the cytoskeleton forms a structure around them. The anchoring junctions thus formed can be of four types desmosomes, hemidesmosomes, focal adhesions and adherens junctions. In order for a proper tissue to form, it is important for the cells of the tissue to bind together. It is equally important to prevent the invasion and binding of other cells. Thus, cell adhesion has to be specific. This is where the cell adhesion molecules come into play (Alberts et al. 2002). Cell Adhesion Molecules (CAMs) Adhesion of cells to other cells and to the ECM is mediated by certain proteins on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The symbols such as the hills, drinking, the station, and characters actions that are used throughout the story are used to help the reader understand the theme of abortion. Usually when found in stories, places such as train stations, bus stations, and airports give stories a sense of transition or being in between experiences. Since the express wasn t coming for another 40 minutes, the topic of the abortion is brought up. It s as if the time that they are waiting for the express from Barcelona is the amount of time that the couple has to make their decision. The couple sits at a table in the shade, outside the building while they wait for the express from Barcelona. A bamboo beaded curtain hangs in the doorway of the bar. Bamboo is hollow, so when you look at it from a certain angle, it is a ring. This represents the womb as empty if they decide to go through with the abortion. If there is a string that runs through the bamboo, it makes it seem like the space is filled, much like a pregnant belly would be. On the American and the girl s luggage, there were labels on them from all the hotels where they had spent nights . The luggage can be seen as an outline of their journey that has brought them to ... Preparation And Presentation Of A Company s Financial... 1 Introduction 1.1 Background to the study Preparation and presentation of a company s financial statements is a process that is laden with the use of estimates. The conceptual framework released by the Financial Accounting Standards Board indicates that a company prepares financial statements with the intention of assisting investors assess the company s future cash flow prospects (Financial Accounting Standards Board, 2010). However, the process used by a company in assessing its cash flows is reliant on the use of estimates and conjecture. It has also been argued that the increased use of complex financial derivatives contributed to the confusion regarding the use of fair value accounting, especially among those companies that lacked deep insight into the operations of the financial world (Laux Leuz, 2010). Even when there was adequate knowledge on how these derivatives were to be accounted for, there are arguments that companies failed to interpret the guidelines as would have been expected. 1.2 Statement of the problem Generally, there are two approaches in determining the value of a company s assets and liabilities (Laux Leux, 2009). One, the company can use the historical cost approach. Under this method, the purchase cost is used as the basis of determining other factors such as the asset s loss of value that occurs over time. Therefore, a building acquired five decades ago would be presented in the financial statements either at the cost at which it was built or the cost of land plus construction. Depreciation is then deducted from this cost over its lifetime. The historical cost method has some obvious drawbacks. The historical cost method disregards the occurrence of events that have the impact of reducing the asset s value (Hitz, 2007). For example, it is possible that the cost of land will have appreciated immensely over the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Classics are relevant to today s time because they teach us the value, they help us understand history and culture, you can read and re read them, and they help us understand how we got our literature today. Classics are also entertaining and will continue to be read throughout generations. We should read classical literature because classical literature has value. The value is important to our culture because it shows how we got to our literature today and shows how far we have come. The story Orpheus and Eurydice is a good example of value and morality because Orpheus tries to get his wife back and fails. The Fates tell Orpheus not to look back at her until they are back home. Orpheus looked back at Eurydice and when he looked back at her he lost her for good. This story is a good example of value because it teaches us value and how we should appreciate what we have and appreciate the second chances we get in life. The history and culture behind classical literature is our history because it helped us get to where we are now and shows how we wrote and told our stories. The history in classical literature can be true or sometimes true. With myths, some of the stories have some truth in them or the story really happened but if that is the case, most of the time the storyteller makes assumptions about the event. In the ... Most Greek states, seeing that this was possible, quickly followed suit. By 404 BC, at the end of the Peloponnesian war, Athens no longer had any influence on the island. (For more information on this war read Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War). Later, Carthage, being allied to the Persian Empire, invaded Sicily on two specific occasions in the fifth century during the Peloponnesian war. The first invasion by the Carthaginian army was led, in 480 B.C., by a man named Hamilcar the Magonid (not to be confused with Hamilcar Barca of the First Punic wars), who later died in Himera. The second invasion was carried out two generations later in 409 B.C. by Hamilcar the Magonid s grandson, Hannibal (again not to be confused with famous Hannibal of the Second Punic wars). In Vygotsky s concept, zone of proximal development he explains that it is the distance between a child s developmental level, which is determined by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determined through problem solving under adult guidance (Vygotsky, 1978, p174). This concept is highly used in education and in classrooms. For example, I work with a student who is eighteen years of age and has intellectual disabilities. During our morning routine he enjoys working on puzzles. He has a difficult time putting the puzzle together so I help him with clues and or prompt him to the puzzle piece that fits. He moves onto a new puzzle once I no longer have to give him clues or prompts. As I have tracked his progress he has needed less prompt than he did three months ago. The goal of this concept is that, as an adult collaborates with a child to help them move from where they are to where they should be with help by accomplishing the exercise through prompts, clues, modeling, and etc. Bandura has studied self efficacy, which is the extent or strength of one s belief in one s own ability to complete tasks and reach goals. Self efficacy can affect all types of behaviors like academics, social and recreational. • 12. Descriptive Essay About Christmas Ever since I was younger, decorating our Christmas tree has always been a big deal in my family. We decorate just about two weeks before Christmas, always on a Sunday night after our family dinner. This night has always been special to me, in fact it is probably one of my favorite parts of the Christmas season. My grandparents who are local come over, we turn on Christmas music, and the fireplace. We have Christmas cookies with hot chocolate and just make a night of it. The last part of the night, but arguably the most important, is when my Dad places our glass angel atop the tree. It signifies, to me at least, the reason we celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. However, lately, I ve noticed a recent trend that confuses me. In the past couple years I ve noticed that people, even those in my own extended family, use items either from popular culture, or just random things they find important, as their tree toppers. My Uncle Mike and Aunt Kelly use a Phillies baseball hat, my Aunt Maureen and Uncle Steve use a personalized set of Mickey Mouse ears from their honeymoon, my friend Nicoletta and her family simply use a plain, old santa hat. I grew up to believe and see Christmas as a religious holiday, we go to mass on Christmas Eve and on Christmas day, it s just a part of our tradition. Growing up, I just assumed everyone else held these ideas and traditions as well. So to see people so close to me change something I thought was so sacred and something everyone else ... On the outside, it may look confusing, but traditional compatibilism is simple once you get through the vocabulary and a few examples. In this essay, I will cover the traditional compatibilists analysis on free will, give an example of a counterexample to traditional compatibilism, and my thoughts on why or why not the counterexample is successful in rejecting the traditional compatibilist analysis of free will. The brain injury he suffers from prevents John from having the desire to consume white things, like the glass of milk. The case satisfies condition number one for the traditional compatibilist analysis of free will. John is acting on his will to drink something that is not white. While this may be true, this case tries to say that John could not have done any other action, failing the second condition of the analysis of free will from a traditional compatibilist view. Human beings are intelligent, adaptive organisms that have lived on this earth for hundreds of thousands of years. Their destinies are not given to them, but earned throughout their lives throughout challenging circumstances and experiences. Also portrayed in this story is the idea that humans, deep down, represent what is good in the world, meaning we are the ones making the world a better place to live. This idea is similarly shared in Blake s Songs of Innocence when he advocates for the better treatment of children growing up in a world of poverty. These ideas clash when you consider the lives of these poverty stricken children, and how that will socially and mentally impact their lives and how they interact with the world. Children growing up in such circumstances are more prone to violent and erratic behavior, decreasing their chances at improving the world. When it comes down to it, this is the only world we have, and we have to protect what we have, while constantly building onto its already in place social establishments. It raises awareness of things around the world and provides information about understanding conflicts and solving them. (Murray, Dr. Matthew) Dr. Edelson points out that, While the impacts of any particular far reaching decision may be small, the cumulative impact of the decisions made by millions of people are enormous. ( What is Geo literacy? 2012) Geography is something all citizens should know about, everyone should be aware of what is happening around them. The main focus of teaching students how to be geoliterate is so they will know the consequences resulting from basic decisions. As the curriculum continues to change in schools throughout the nation, geography has become nonexistent within the classroom. Besides the basic geographical features, like landforms and oceans, most of this generation knows nothing about geography. Even sometimes these simple concepts are unreachable for students and many young adults making them geo illiterate. Geographic Literacy, as described by Dr. Daniel C. Edelson, has three key concepts; understanding human and natural systems, geographic reasoning and systematic decision making. As a child who slept with a map over my head and whose parents joked had more space for books in my bed than me, I found in them and news my childhood heroes and some of the stories out of which I would find my passions: from Edward R. Murrow s broadcasts from London an interest in war reporting, from Abraham Lincoln s oratory a desire to understand speechwriting, from John Colville s The Fringes of Power: 10 Downing Street Diaries a love of public service, and from a BBC news clip of a family under siege in a cemetery a desire to understand the roots of conflict in the Balkans and reconciliation in the time since. Contract clauses are enforceable under federal and state laws as well as any other part of a contract. Out of all the general clauses confined in Government contracts, the Change Clause would seem to be the most important. It stands in the focus of the contractual arrangement with other clauses denoting to and borrowing its basic practice as some usual way of doing things.
