Cornell College Reflection
7. What summer experience has been of significance to you? Why?
Summer of 2017 at Cornell s condensed 6 weeks semester with credit, taught by their professors was a
sheer pleasure.
It gave me a true preview of the college experience.
I learn to speak with not talk to my professors and teaching assistants when I needed help and to
discuss class topics to further my knowledge by exploring the topics with them in conversations.
I learned to plan, such as checking my email frequently for posted assignments a week before they
were due, instead of a day, like in high school.
I had to learn to manage my time more effectively.
No adult or parents telling me what to do; I was completely free.
The Cornell Summer College allowed me to gain the responsibility that comes with real freedom.
8. Have you traveled to or lived in different localities? If so, where?
My parents have always adhered to our seeing the USA. Our travels have been on holidays, when our
parents have conventions, and a combination of exploring America s historic sites, national
monuments, learning about history through museums, unique settings such as Sturbridge Village, and
seeing colleges.
As my resume shows I have been to Vermont, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, Yellowstone
National Park in Wyoming, California (both the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas), Illinois
(Chicago), Rhode Island, Arizona, Maryland (Baltimore), and Florida. Winter weather and friends
have made our international

Essay about Iran Engagement Policy Option
Thirty four years ago, the Islamic Revolution changed not only the leadership of Iran but brought a
complex and strained relationships with the United States. The focus of this paper is an analysis on an
Iranian engagement policy option outlined in the CSIS Report The Gulf Kaleidoscope: Reflections on
the Iranian Challenge . The international relations theory of liberalism is applied using the tenets of
economic interdependence and democratic transparency.
For three decades, exchanges between the United States and Iranian diplomats have been tactical, not
strategic. There are various policy options that can be utilized effectively and strategically to
communicate, ultimately negotiate, with Iran. Iran is a threat to regional ... Show more content on

The essential features of an engagement policy option are a robust diplomatic strategy, reassessing
economic sanctions, and Iranian international relations. The end state is an engagement strategy that
prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
A diplomatic strategy is the best option in engaging Iran but it will require patience and a long term
commitment. The impact to Iran over the past 34 years is a zcountry that is isolated from not only the
Middle East but also the international community. Only through a bilateral diplomatic effort will the
United States convince Iran to change its foreign policy. The focus of the bilateral discussions is Iran s
nuclear program and the right to enrich uranium and an easing of the crippling sanctions on the Iranian
economy. There is a belief Iran is amiable to discussing a inherent right to enrichment uranium as
outlined in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, while seeking relief from the mandated United States
and United Nations sanctions.
Kenneth Waltz s article Why Iran Should Get the Bomb: Nuclear Balancing Would Mean Stability ,
outlines why punishing a state through economic sanctions does not inexorably derail its nuclear
program. The Sanctions placed against Iran have been largely successful for the United States,
whereas our diplomatic strategy has not been as successful. In some form or fashion each United
States Presidents since President Carter has

The History of AIDS and HIV
In this HHMI lecture, the speaker, Dr. Ojiktu, combined basic research and clinical and public health
work in her talk just as she does in her everyday work life. She is a medical doctors that sees many
patients between the Boston area and a South African province in which 1 and 5 people are infected
with the a virus that causes aids. She discuses the microscopic realm of the virus and virus infected
cells to AIDS therapies. Dr. Ojiktu treats people with HIV and other infectious diseases. She enjoys
linking what is happening here and overseas. She also works on a team to develop programs and do
research concerning aids. In 1980 a strange new disease was growing, starting in Los Angeles. This
disease presented vague symptoms such as weight loss, lack of energy, diarrhea, fevers and sweats,
rashes, and swollen lymph nodes. These symptoms could be caused by any viral infectious. The
unique thing is that these systems were chronic, progressive, and debilitating. Some patients presented
very bad shortness of breath and a bad cough. With this they found that the patients had a rare fungal
infection called Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP). There were also some cases concerning these
symptoms in New York City. These cases are rare so the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
noticed a spike in the drug Pentamidine (a drug used to treat PCP, typically used on cancer patients).
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent out Dr. Golfi to investigate. Dr. Golfi

Plato s Symposium, By Plato
In the book, Plato s Symposium, by Plato, who was a philosopher in Greece, he illustrates the dialectic
discussion at a party at Agathon s to celebrate his triumph of his first tragedy. In the Symposium; the
guests Phaedrus, an Athenian aristocrat; Pausanias, the legal expert; Eryximachus, a physician;
Aristophanes, eminent comic playwright; Agathon ,a tragic poet and host of the banquet; Socrates,
eminent philosopher and Plato s teacher; and Alcibiades, a prominent Athenian statesman, orator and
general; discuss their own versions and viewpoints to praise the god of love. First, we have Phaedrus,
who starts to say that love is the most ancient of the gods and should be praiseworthy, next we have
Eryximachus who states that love affects everything in the universe and that it should be protected,
next we have Aristophanes, who states that the reason why love is on earth is because god has split
humanity in half and that man should fear the gods and should embrace love to feel whole again, and
last we have Socrates who suggests what Diotima explains that love is in the middle of two things or
objects and has both characteristics. Phaedrus starts off the conversation of love stating how the god
Love doesn t get much attention in songs and that he should be praiseworthy because he has helped
men to gain honor and blessedness. This begins the symposium and functions as a way to tell the
reader what the topic would be about and why the guests in the party should discuss it.

Visions Of Nature Reflection Report
Visions of Nature Reflection
Visions of Nature Reflection When the Visions of Nature project was first explained in the beginning
of the course I was immediately worried about how I would be able to create something that
represented the natural world in an artistic way. Personally, I am not the most skilled in the world of
art through visual and esthetically pleasing mediums. My artistic peak was reached in kindergarten
when I made an impressive elephant with finger paint before the school s annual trip to the National
Zoo. At first I struggled with deciding what type of project to pursue. I wanted to do something
meaningful and original, but the best I could think of was either to make a video or maybe a collage. It
wasn t until I was walking back to my dorm room late one night when it presented itself, literally. It
was a pretty peaceful evening when I was passing the Dominion residence building. I did not see or
hear anyone or anything around me. It was completely silent when out of nowhere a shopping cart
came rolling off the top set of stairs and crashed onto the grass in front of me. After the cart had
ceased to move it was completely silent again. That is when I decided that I would make a shopping
cart garden. It would be an interesting piece that would capture people s attention and would not
require me to torture my fellow classmates with my sub par finger painting. The garden would give a
tangible source for observers that would create a larger impact than

African American Country Artist Essay
Similar to Bailey and Pride, Darius Rucker, the third African American country singer to perform
onstage at the Grand Ole Opry, did not enter the country music industry to make a pathway for other
African Americans. Instead, Rucker had a passion for the guitar strumming,
honky tonk melody, which he decided to pursue after his involvement with the rock band, Hootie and
the Blowfish. Rucker said in an interview with the New York Times, Hate mail s been a part of my
life; that s just the way it is. There s still people who don t want me to be singing country music, but I
never want to let anybody tell me what I can do , which portrays Rucker s pride for his culture and
how he does not let racial obscenities interfere with his music (Petrusich). African American artists are
forced to battle through this hate mail and criticism in order to get their faces revealed in the country
spotlight. If an artist lacks determination and vigor, it is hard for them to keep performing in front of
audiences that are familiar with watching and listening to white country performers. Ultimately, many
African Americans steer away from the country genre because they do not want to get discriminated
against for not fitting the typical stereotype associated with being a country artist. All three artists
embody the traits of what it means to be a true Negro artist. In Langston Hughes s short ... Show more

New York Yankees Research Paper
(working title) Imagine being in the 1960s watching your 2 most favorite baseball teams play against
each other in the world series. The score is 9 9, the game is tied, the bases are loaded and your favorite
player is up to bat. You re sitting in the crowd on the edge of your seat wondering what is he gonna do.
Will he hit a home run and win the world series, or will he strike out and disappoint His whole team?
Baseball can be very complicated sometimes, but when you know more about a baseball team, famous
player, and the equipment ,baseball won t be complicated anymore .The New York Yankees were well
known in baseball during the 1960s, because of their popularity, the type of equipment they used, and
their baseball players.
The New York Yankees were a very popular baseball team in the 1960s because of their ability to go
far and win the world series 2 times in the 1960 s. In 1962 The Yankees went to the world series and
played at Yankee Stadium(britannica.com). In the World Series, they ended up defeating the San
Francisco Giants in game 7 so the Yankees could take the gold trophy(Britannica.com).Game 7 in the

The Importance Of Plagiarism In College Students
In short: Don t do it. But in truth, that is not good enough.
I have assigned and graded or had graded by TA s tens of thousands of bits of writing by college
students over the years. A lot of my friends are teachers. My wife is a teacher. I ve seen it all. If you
are a student trying to avoid getting caught plagiarizing, I can help you.
You need to know the following three things. These facts will save you from getting tossed out of
college or having a mark on your high school record.
1) Teachers hate plagiarism more than they hate stepping on puppies and kittens. If there are two
students in a class, and one has plagiarized an assignment and one has crushed some puppies and
kittens, and the teacher only has time to turn one of them it to the administration, they ll turn in the
plagiarizer.
2) There has almost never been a case where a student was proved to have plagiarized something (by
matching the original to the student s paper) where the plagiarism wasn t already blindingly obvious to
the teacher to begin with. In other words, when you plagiarize something, it is always spotted
immediately. If some other student tells you that they got away with it, they are lying to you (like
House says, people always lie) or the teacher chose to not turn them in. Yet.
Given this, you should understand that plagiarism is never a good strategy for improving your grade.
Just don t do it.

Comparison s The Trolley Problem By Judith Jarvis Thomson
The article, The Trolley Problem , written by Judith Jarvis Thomson, poses an intense ethical
argument. Within the reading, she addresses two of Philippa Foot s imaginary situations. The first
involves a trolley with faulty brakes, and if the driver should flip the switch to kill five people or just
one person. The second is a similar situation; should a doctor let five patients die or operate on one
patient to take his organs without consent? I will argue that it is not morally permissible to turn the
trolley or to operate without consent. This article starts with an interesting scenario. A trolley is
speeding down its tracks. As the trolley is coming around a turn, the driver sees five men working on
the tracks. Luckily, the driver of the trolley has the option to flip a switch to make the trolley turn to
the right onto a separate section of the tracks. It is not that simple, though. On the right spur of the
tracks, one man is working. Philippa Foot has arranged that no matter which way the driver turns, it
would be impossible for the workmen to get off the track safely and on time to avoid being run down
by the trolley (Thomson 1395). As a first instinct, the driver tries to slam on the trolley s brakes to
avoid hitting any of the workmen. Unfortunately, the brakes on the trolley do not work. Thus, the
driver is left facing this situation: should he continue going straight or should he quickly turn the
trolley to the right? If he stays straight, he will continue hurdling towards the five helpless workmen,
inevitably hitting and killing all five of them. If he flips to switch to turn the trolley right, the driver
will undoubtedly hit the lone workman and take his life (Thomson 1395). Now here is the real catch of
the situation: the reader is the trolley driver. It is up to the reader of this article to decide what route to
take. Would the reader, in the driver s situation, keep the trolley straight, or turn it to the right?
Thomson explains that when she gave such a hypothetical case to several people, the consensus was
overwhelmingly harmonious. Many readers believed that it was morally permissible for you to turn
the trolley (Thomson 1395). Some say that it is completely necessary to turn the

Explain Why Did The North Win The Civil War
Why did the North win the Civil War?
One of the most important event in the history of the United States is the war of the North and South
of 1861 1865, the Civil War. The main causes of the war lay in the field of economics. In the North, in
the period preceding the war, a powerful industry and a banking sector were created. The open slave
trade and slavery did not bring such fabulous profits as the exploitation of thousands and thousands of
free people in terrible conditions. The northern clans needed millions of new workers for their
enterprises. And slaves in agriculture could replace thousands of agricultural machines, increasing
profitability.

Harrison Bergeron Egalitarianism Essay
What makes us different from one another? Is it the color of our hair, the different shades of pigment
in our skin, or the intelligence and beauty that a person may have? Anyone reading Harrison Bergeron
can relate to the ideals of this dystopian world. The fixation of control and uniformity in the novel is a
great comparison to the epitomes of communism we see today. Such as societies like North Korea. In
which their government has total control of its country. Since the society in the story focuses on the
idea of egalitarianism becoming the pillar of their community. A person s individual aspects of

My Singing Journey
A friend from my childhood once told me dream on, and sing louder . This friend pushed this saying
deep into my heart until it made it seem as if it kept my heart beating. I never really began to
understand what she meant when she repeated this saying to me until she explained it. She said to me
that to dream on is to not give up, and to sing louder is to not let anyone take my voice away from me.
Singing has always been a huge part in my life from singing in talent shows to singing in the shower.
My mother said that I never stopped singing. The journey of my singing began with my first School of
Rock program and is now being pursued on my churches worship team today. Before I start to tell you
about my singing journey, I feel as if I should explain why I started to sing in the first place. It all
began when I was four years old, my older sister Kassidy would always, and I mean always, be
listening to music in her room and singing. As we grew up she learned how to play the guitar and how
to write songs. She inspired me to sing and I couldn t thank her enough for it. When my sister was 12
years old she started to get involved in this program named School of Rock. When she would sing on
that stage I constantly wished that I was her. I could not wait until I was in the 7th grade so that I
could be a part of it as well.
The day eventually came and I was terrified. School of Rock is a program in which you get placed

Unfortunately, in 1987 Enron merged with Valhalla. The problem began because traders exceeded

General George S. Patton liked fame and winning, the advance towards Palermo, Sicily, was a race

Ebola Virus Outbreak Of West Africa
Imagine being isolated from your friends and family, suffering from an illness that feels as though
something is burning through your body, while watching people around you dying of the same illness
and wondering when it will be your turn to proverbially kick the bucket . For many survivors of the
Ebola disease, this situation would be far too familiar. In March 2014, the Ebola virus outbreak began
in West Africa, mainly in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. According to a recent figure from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been a total of 28616 Ebola cases and
11310 deaths from Ebola in these three countries (2014). There were many unpalatable symptoms of
the disease, such as fever, headache, joint and muscle pain, widespread bleeding, diarrhea and other
physical symptoms leading to high mortality (Van Bortel). If one is lucky enough to survive this virus,
however, there are just as many negative results of the virus as there were symptoms. Many West
African survivors have to deal with their new negative image, negative lasting health effects, or a
decrease in financial stability due to their inability to work or find work after they recover. Now that
the West African Ebola epidemic is over, (Liberia) there remains the task of assimilating the survivors
back into their societies. Moreover, the best solution to counteract the effects of the Ebola virus on
survivors is to expand upon the Ebola survivor support organizations already in place.

Critical Analysis Of Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli is a kind of a precious blue stone. (Marc 1998) Lapis Lazuli referred to in this poem was
given to Yeats on his seventieth birthday (as a present) by Mr. Harry Clifton. In this essay I am going
to critically analyse this poem in relation to its context. This means that in relation to time and place. I

dangerous than the first one was possible. Lines of extreme fear and violence were growing and

Persuasive Essay On The School Should Start Time
Should school start at 7:00 or should it start later in the morning? In Douglas High School, start times
are at 7:30 in the morning. Changing the school schedule to a later start time would result in many
other changes affecting a lot of people. According to the National Sleep Foundation, The change will
affect the entire community, from students and parents to businesses, libraries, police, youth sports
clubs, bus drivers and many others. Altering the school schedule would influence numerous aspects of
people s lives. Highly coordinated routines would have to be changed and adapted to the new
schedule. A later release time would take time off of students free time in the afternoon. Clubs, sports,
jobs, and other after school activities would have to be pushed back later into the evening. School start
times should stay earlier in the morning, since changing routines would be difficult, students need free
time, and after school activities would be pushed back.
Perhaps the biggest concern for parents would be having to change and reorganize their carefully
planned, traditional routines. Many people are resistant to change, especially if it involves
reassembling their plans and procedures to adjust to the new schedule. This is a problem for parents
work schedules since they most likely will not be able to see their kids in the morning which will
leave students unsupervised when they get ready. This is also a problem for transportation since
parents will not be able to take their kids to school, unnecessarily causing traffic and more costs since
bus schedules would change too. According to the National Sleep Foundation, If elementary students
have the earliest start times, they may be waiting for the bus in the dark early mornings, or waiting at
home alone after school. Later start times are thought to solve tardies and absences, but if students
cannot get to school, it does not solve anything. A change in the school schedule will result in disorder
in many people s daily routines, perhaps having to discard certain activities to fully adjust to the new
schedule. The changes caused by a new schedule affect students too.
Students need time after school to be able to relax and de stress from school with

3d Printing Versus Traditional Manufacturing Techniques
3D printing has been used in different aspects of every field but mostly its application has been limited
to making prototypes. 3D printing versus Traditional Manufacturing techniques in almost every field
is still very debatable. One such area which I would like to explore in terms of functionality and cost
effectiveness would be the Construction Industry.
The last time a global survey for homelessness was attempted by the United Nations in 2005 an
estimated 100 million people were homeless worldwide. As many as 1.6 billion people lacked
adequate housing [1]. In the United States, on a single night in January 2015, 564,708 people were
experiencing homelessness meaning they were sleeping outside or in an emergency shelter or
transitional housing program [2]. In 2013, the Slum population in India went up from 52 million to 65
million and it has been predicted to rise to 104 million [3]. Looking at the statistics, the main cause for
homelessness could be contributed to cost of affordable housing. Another example that could be
considered could be of people living in disaster prone areas where people lose their houses overnight.
In such scenarios, 3D printing could be a viable solution where houses could be printed in a couple of
days as compared to traditional construction methods where people need to seek out emergency
shelters till their houses are built. Also, 3D printing a house gives Architects ability to design and build
structures which are complex geometrically

Conscientious Responsibility
I do consider myself to responsible and conscientious because my way of thinking is if you are going

you have not tried the task. when it comes to school I try my best and put in full effort because you

The Nature Of The Poetry Of Percy Shelley s Mutability
Shelley Percy is one of the most highly regarded Romantic poets of the 19th century. Many of Shelley
s poem tell about the nature of the human condition. In many of his poems Shelley use elements of
nature (seashells, the wind, the ocean, etc.) to discuss truths about the human condition. Percy Shelley
examines the one consistent characteristic of being human in his poem Mutability . In his poem
Mutability Shelley shows the fragility and unpredictability of the human condition.
The poem opens with the speaker comparing humans to clouds that veil the midnight moon (Line 1).
The clouds move radiantly across the sky and cover the light of the moon. The words speed , gleam ,
quiver and streaking personify the cloud image. Shelley describes the cloud s actions as a metaphor
for human actions, How restlessly they speed, and gleam, and quiver, / streaking the darkness
radiantly! (Lines 2 3). He believes that humans go through life with speed, not taking time to rest; like
clouds at night, we do not last forever. Shelley s use of the word of veil instead of covers creates a
sense of purposefully hidden light. In lines three to four of the poem the wondrous sight is eventually
extinguished by the darkness, yet soon/ Night closes round, and they are lost forever. By using this
image of the night Shelley shows the cycle of change and demonstrates human morality. The speaker
is pointing out that humans have short lives on Earth and regardless of how radiantly we may shine,
we are like clouds at night that are overshadowed.
In the second stanza Shelley describes the frailty of human existence. In lines five through nine
humans are describes as forgotten lyres, whose dissonant strings/ Give various response to each
varying blast,/ To whose frail frame no second motion brings/ One mood or modulation like the last.
Shelley uses this as a metaphor that expands on the concept of human morality. In this stanza humans
are compared to forgotten lyres saying that we will be forgotten when we are dead and gone. The
different moods of the stanza are created by the different sounds of the lyre. Humans are being
compared to instruments with beautifully melodies have been forgotten. Shelley is saying that once

Politics is the Main Factor in the Development of...
There are great differences and inequality between countries around the world. Many countries don t
have access to basic needs such as education, health care, law and order, safety why is that? Why is
there a gap between rich and poor? How did some countries manage to become rich while others
remained poor? These are the regularly asked questions about the development of countries. There are
different perspectives on the growth of countries; however the three main theories mentioned in the
book are due to geography, culture, ignorance or institutions. The authors of Why nations fail
Acemoglu and Robhinson have challenged these theories . They believe that political institutions are
the main factors for development of a well functioning nation and the determinants of economic
institutions. It s all about institutions, Daron Acemoglu, one of the authors, explained. It s really about
human made systems, rules, regulations, formal or informal that creates different incentives. The book
explains over the years how institutions played a big role for the failure or success of nations. It is
filled with interesting historical stories and evidence from Latin America, England, Europe, Africa,
Roman Empire and the Mayans .The geography hypothesis states that land and people are the reasons
for failure or success of a nation. It also states that most countries in tropical areas are poor due to
laziness and widespread of diseases. Singapore and Malaysia are in such areas;

Persuasive Essay On Marijuana
The United States was once a country that enslaved African American people because of their skin
color. America has progressed significantly since slavery was abolished over 150 years ago; however,
there are still significant differences the land of the free continues to make between races in. As Martin
Luther King, Jr. once said, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Across the country,
minorities, specifically African Americans, are being unfairly targeted and arrested for marijuana
related crimes compared to Caucasians. The state must stand up against this and propose a change in
the strict laws surrounding marijuana, or also known as cannabis.
The disparities in arrest rates are caused by the bias and generalizations law enforcement and society
have towards minorities. This disproportionality is proven based off arrest data gathered from different
states, counties, and cities ( The war on marijuana in black and white, 2013). The discrepancy in
apprehensions involving cannabis has become a noteworthy social problem that has led to some states
already implementing and adopting new policies on marijuana use. The ultimate goal is for Texas to
pass a bill legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, Texas can adopt plan in place similar to that of
the other five states that have already allowed the private consumption of marijuana.

The Reason Why More And More Women Are Getting Breast Lift Sydney
A breast lift is a plastic surgery procedure that tightens the tissues making up the breast. In addition, it
does away with excess and unnecessary skin in order to make them look more full and contoured. The
breast lift is also referred to as a mastopexy. It is a process that is recognized by the Australian Society
of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
It is one of life s inevitable and foregone conclusions, as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the
west, that a woman s breasts lose their youthful perkiness and shape. Yes there are some natural things
a woman can do to keep the rate at which this happens in check, but it is bound to slowly but surely
happen.

Big Fish Play Analysis
This past week I went to the theater and saw the musical Big Fish, and my first impression before
even seeing a second of the play was, This is a play I have never heard of, so it cant be that good. But
minutes into the play I was hooked, and couldn t keep my eyes off the stage. There were a few key
factors that lead to my attitude doing 180 and greatly enjoying the play. The first factor was the fact it
was a musical, I never seen a musical before Big Fish. To my surprise I really did like the whole feel
of the musical. I thought the lines of the songs were quite funny, for example the song with the witch
in it that was on of my favorite scenes. I also thought the choreography was brilliant, especially the
scene with the fisherman. That was hands down my favorite part of the whole musical. The dance that
they were doing I thought was very funny, but it also looked pretty difficult to accomplish so I give
props to all the actors for making it look like a piece of cake. At one point during that scene every

of the way the assembled the props, and used them to make the play more interesting. An example of
what I am talking about is that little river type thing in front of that stage. In the beginning of the play,
there was a spotlight on it and it looked awesome with fish popping its head up every few seconds.
Then the scene with the fisherman and all the fish flying out of the river, using that prop not just once
but twice to catch the audiences attention. I can t speak enough on how good of a job this crew did

Compare And Contrast The Devil Wears Prada Book And Movie
The job a million girls would die for: Novel vs. Movie
In 2006, David Frankel made a movie version of The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger. The
book and the movie are both set in New York and tell the story of a girl named Andy. In both versions
Andy starts working for Miranda Priestly, editor in chief of Runway, a fashion magazine. Generally
the film version of The Devil Wears Prada, what kind of experiences Andy passes through is similar to
what Andy experiences in Weisberger s novel. However, the movie is different form the book because
some characters have a different appeal and image, Andy s love life might end up positive, and it ends
in a different way.
One difference is the appeal and image of the characters. For example, in the book Andy has blond
hair and lives with her boyfriend named Alex Fineman. Later in the story, Alex breaks up with Andy.
In contrast, Andy has brown hair in the movie. Also the boyfriend s name is Nate Cooper, instead of
Alex Fineman. Another difference in characters is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

other every week for dinner. Also yellow cabs, nice looking people from New York are well
represented in both versions.
Another similarity, the main storyline, is that Andy gets to work for Runway in which Miranda
Priestly is editor in chief. Andy got accepted due to an interview which was different form all other
girls. Miranda gives it a shot. In both versions Miranda was in the beginning very dissatisfied about
Andy. There is also a similarity in Miranda s way of communication. She refuses to share elevators
with others and dismisses everyone with a cold That s

Transfer Your Car Essay
You may own a rarely used, but old vehicle and are considering passing your car down to a son or a
daughter, perhaps to a newly licensed grandchild. Transferring ownership can provide much needed
transportation for someone else, but is it always a good idea to offer them your car? We ll take a look
at your options, including selling, donating or even scrapping your aged vehicle.
Condition and Practicality
The first consideration in passing your car down has everything to do with its condition. Unless the
old car has been faithfully maintained, the needed repairs may be too much for the recipient to handle.
It might not be a problem if the recipient is handy, likes working on cars, and can still procure the
required parts. A no longer made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The recipient would then combine those funds with her own to buy another vehicle.
Donate Your Car
Instead of passing down your car, you might consider donating it to a charity. And not to just any
charity, but one where you can qualify for a tax deduction.
According to the IRS, only donations made to 501(c)(3) organizations will allow you to claim a tax
deduction. You should know that you can only claim the fair market value of the car. This means that
even if the vehicle has a book value of $1,200, its outstanding repairs may mean it is only worth $650.
If you choose to donate anyway, you must obtain a written acknowledgment from the charity if the
total donation is $250 or more.
Scrap Your Car
If your vehicle is in poor shape and is of no interest to a loved one or a charity, you might consider
having it scrapped. Serious problems for an aged vehicle include a slipping transmission, a blown
head gasket, a failed air conditioning system, or exhaust system problems, especially a broken
catalytic converter. Any one of these problems may cost more to fix than your automobile is worth.
Certainly passing your car down or donating it are not sufficient options

This method can be used for customers of the four or five star ships. This loyalty program would
provide occasional direct offers to customers who already have experience with Cunard and therefore
will not view the deals as a lowering of standards. An example of a deal that can be provided is a
selling package that is good for a year or two. This package would outline a discounted price for a set
amount of people to travel on a certain cruise ship. That way, there is enough time for a customer to
realistically plan out a trip while providing an incentive for them and encourage more action as
opposed to a regular priced ad.
Lastly, an alternative that can be taken is to build relationships with various large companies with
employees who make an income in the target range and make offers to company executives. This
method would not downplay the company image because Cunard would be communicating directly
with high income executives and furthermore will not be making any public sales or advertisements.
This method would create new potential customers who are directly in the target market of choice
using the method of relationship building. This may also result in additional customer retention. This
method can be used for both the four and five star ships. In order to attract the target market of the five
star ships, Cunard can make an arrangement with a company to offer a deal with their luxury ships as
part of a retirement plan.

Describe The Semipermeability Of The Cell Membrane
The membrane around the cells in the body is the boundary that keeps them from reaching the
surroundings on the outside. It allows for certain substances to pass through to the cells rather than
others, and it contains proteins and lipids such as phospholipids (cholesterol) (Erster 3). The simplest
membranes are known as a phospholipid bilayer, given that there are two layers containing
hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails allowing the membrane to have its semipermeability. The
tails on both layers face the inside towards each other, while the heads are on the outside (Erster 4).
They have a fluidity to it, being able to move from side to side, and rarely flip due to having to move
through areas that are hydrophobic (afraid of water) and hydrophilic (attracted to water) since it would
take a lot of energy to do so (Erster 10). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lipid rafts are a kind of membrane domain that have a specific structure and job. The whole domain
does not detach from the membrane. The closest thing to becoming loose is when the temperature
goes down, increasing the fluidity of the membrane (Erster 12,13).
B) Choice B is incorrect. These regions cannot flip inside out. In a simple membrane, the lipids move
from side to side, and there can sometimes be a flip in the bilayer between the top and bottom layer s
hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails, but that in itself takes a lot of energy to do (as explained
above)(Erster 10). There is no way to flip the region inside out.
C) Choice C is correct. The fluidity of the membrane can change overtime depending on the
temperature. As explained in my falsification of choice A, as temperature goes down, the membrane
becomes more fluid, and the tails become unsaturated to keep the phospholipids from tightening up

Effects Of Birth Control On American Women s Lives
Effects of the Birth Control Pill on American Women s Lives
Over the centuries, women have tried a number of methods to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Some of
the pregnancy control measures that existed before the invention of the pill included abstinence and
withdrawal. Unfortunately, such methods often failed to prevent unintended pregnancies. As such,
birth control advocates continued researching for effective birth control methods. Americans did not
meet the idea of birth control methods with enthusiasm. In fact, those who advocated the use of birth
control devices experienced challenges, including being jailed.
In the 1950s, birth control pills were introduced in the United States (Windsor, 2002). Over the past
seven decades, the pill has changed the American women s lives in several ways. The pills have
allowed women to delay marriages, invest in their career development, and secure well paid jobs in
areas that were previously dominated by men. The pill has also improved family relationships and
prevented abuse and marriage dissolutions. This paper explores the history of birth control methods in
the US and how the pill became available on a large scale to women. The paper further examines how
the pills has given women the freedom to advance their careers, strengthen the marriage relationships,
and participate in the workforce.

Definition Essay On Equality
Equality the state or quality of being equal; correspondence in quantity, degree, value, rank, or ability.
Equality is more than a 15 word definition. Equality is knowing someone is different but treating them
the same, equality is knowing someone has muscular dystrophy and treating them like you would any
other person, equality is when you introduce yourself you state the pronouns you go by like he, she, or

is seeing a girl s short haircut and not assuming they are a lesbian or transgender. Equality is not 15

Anthropometry Technique And Physiological Changes
Anthropometry technique and physiological changes in life stages
Anthropometry has been around since the 19th century. Scientists have developed incipient techniques
such as MRI, CT scans for quantifying body compositions. According to Jellife (1966),
Anthropometry is the measurement of the variations of physical dimensions and composition of the
human body at different age levels . Anthropometry can be used to assess the nutritional status of the
individual within a population by determining physiological factors whether an individual is well
nourished or undernourished.
Anthropometric technique can be identified as a direct method and developed measurements of body
weight, height, circumference, and skinfold thickness. (1) Body mass index (BMI) is calculated
weight/height and used as Weight. The body weight takes into account the age and gender of the
individual. The weight was measured using a digital scale and used to categorise both overweight or
obesity and also eating disorders (Wells, 2006). Individuals will need to remove heavier outer
garments for example, jackets, coats and shoes, the scale will be balanced at zero before the individual
stands on the scale. The weight is measured in kilograms in adults. All participants should be
measured except pregnant women or persons who have difficulty standing.
Another technique is (2) the standing height measured with a wall mounted stadiometer which

would heal him on the Sabbath. 3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, Stand up in front of

life or to kill? But they remained silent. 5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at
their stubborn hearts, said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He stretched it out, and his hand was
completely restored. 6 Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they

David Sack, a doctor who wrote an article for Psychology Today articulates, trauma experienced in
childhood has a special ability to wound. Nevertheless, these difficulties allow teens to gain insight
into adulthood. Melinda Sordino from Speak struggled to overcome her battle with depression after
being raped. Rudyard Kipling, the author of If , explained the traits needed to deal with challenges in
adulthood. The Art of Resilience emphasizes the point that people are competent in subduing
hardships. In Speak, The Art of Resilience, and If , personification, conflict, and symbolism develop
the theme, although adolescence can be associated with challenges, it ultimately culminates
individuals into young adults. Theme as revealed through personification advances the theme that
although adolescence can be associated with challenges, it ultimately culminates individuals into
young adults. In Speak, Andy Evans locked Melinda in her secluded closet to try rape her for a second
time; however, a sound explodes (Anderson 194) from Melinda. Even though it was difficult to say no
and confront the person that made her feel defeated, Melinda did so which made her more confident.
The sound that came from Melinda was powerful enough to finally startle Andy Evans. Laurie Halse
Anderson wanted readers to realize that their voices matter. As a result, she uses the word explodes to
accentuate the purpose and assertiveness in Melinda s voice. Furthermore, Andy Evans is

The Theory Of Moral Behavior
The statement claims that no question can ever be neutral. This means that all questions are leading
questions, that we always have a notion of the knowledge we find. The definition of neutral in the
English dictionary is: not supporting either side in a conflict, disagreement: impartial 1. It means being
detached and impersonal to situations, questions or judgements. Mathematics, as an area of knowledge
is said to be a subject that already exists in the natural world, only that we discover its marvellous
phenomena rather than invent them. The discoveries may require neutrality in our thinking, but the
proofs need prior knowledge, because each formula is built from an aggregate of different unique
formulas. In the same way, in ethics, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This leaves me to wonder if discoveries, even in mathematics, are never discoveries because the
outcome of any research is anticipated before the actual final result.
When I ask someone a question, I as the inquirer, will usually expect a certain type of answer, or there
will be a particular type or model of answer expected for that question. For queries, question or any
uncertainties, the world almost always has a stipulated answer, that if not correct, is at least widely
accepted the majority rules! An inquirer tends to have a bias towards his or her questions. Logic and
rational thinking are involved before the answer is given. Even the essay I am writing right now has
specific criteria, which indirectly, points out wrong or right responses. I would say that almost every
question requires public knowledge, or knowledge by description, before we can incorporate any
private opinions or knowledge by acquaintance. We tend to know that before we know how ; Most
students are taught the circumference of a circle is equal to pi times diameter earlier in about class six
or seven, before they know how this came about, and maybe may never even know or understand. So
if someone asked me what the area of a circle is, and I said it was radius squared, omitting the pi, this
would be wrong, and almost no teacher would even take a second look about why I have I have given
this answer. Using empirical knowledge, I would see no pi around the circle, and that is why I would

The Victorian Er Collin s Challenging Traditional Gender...
The Victorian Era: Collin s Challenging Traditional Gender Roles In 1868, British author Wilkie
Collins wrote what is now famously known as one of the first full length detective stories, The
Moonstone. Within this text, he explores and transcends his writing style, as he created an atmosphere
full of suspense and gothic tradition by making use of two genres famous in the Victorian Era (Ayton,
2). As Collins managed to challenge the roles of men and women within The Moonstone, he
ultimately attempts to reverse genders by creating a story of conflict, where the women are essentially
in charge. As many gender stereotypes are expressed within The Moonstone through the different
narrators of the novel, almost all of them become discredited as we are introduced to the other
characters. By making use of the characters like Betteredge, Lady Verinder, and finally Rachel
Verinder, Collins novel proves to break society s barrier of expected roles for men and women within
the Victorian Era. During the Victorian period, men and women s roles became more sharply defined
than at any time in history. This concept of roles, became extremely significant within Wilkie Collins
The Moonstone (1868), as he incorporated the issues seen during that era, with the roles and
expectations of the women in his novel. Because many of the women seen throughout Collins novel
are more assertive than one would expect from a Victorian novelist, Collins shows women acting
forcefully on their own, which

Our Lady of Guadalupe is a significant painting in the Bower museum and the Orange County

The Virgin of Guadalupe guides me through art and iconography on religious symbols into a love for a
colonial nation. Not only a political symbol, she also a very meaningful symbol for people in the
entire region, not just in Mexico.
Stylistic
The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, whether one considers only the core image or the image with
the additions, certainly belongs to a style of artistic depiction of the Virgin Mary called the
Immaculate Conception, a style that became quite popular in Europe, including Spain, during the late
Middle Ages and Renaissance, growing in relationship to the development of theological speculation
about Mary s own conception. In the image of Guadalupe, by a mandorla of the sun and standing on

Affected and benefited population
It is very hard to believe someone actually benefits from China s air pollution, but it is true. For those
companies that manufacture filter masks and air purifications products, they make dibs on the air
pollution. Air purifiers market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 18% during 2016 to
2021, according to TechSci Research Report. Those who can afford the price would like to install
purifiers at homes, schools, offices, subway stations, airports and so on, at least as a kind of
psychological comfort. Wealthy populations who live either in the urban or far away from polluted
rural areas can financially defend themselves by by improving indoor air quality through air purifiers,

On the most recent reports from Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People s Republic of
China from 16th to 22nd this April, it clearly shows that rural areas still violate air pollution
regulations. There were 285 out of 450 enterprises did not meet emission standard for the first round
of selective monitoring, including 7 major suburb districts in Beijing. For the second round, 248 out of
396 enterprises did not meet emission standard in BTH regions. There were also 169 out of 250
enterprises had environmental related issues that could not meet the standard, including defective
devices, tampering data and disturbance of monitoring. However, the only punishment from the report
is serious warning and let local government process the rest , which is very irresponsible. If there is no
follow up, what is the point of mentoring? When it eventually comes to grassroots, what power do
they have? Is social unrest a concern in Beijing? These questions require more social scholars
attentions and studies in the future. However, I have remembered a lecture taught by French
Ambassador Laurence Tubiana, she says that social movement is important for the people inside.
Social movement can make a change and indirect affect the decision making process. We cannot deny
the effort and resolution from Beijing government, but efficiency is also considered as a key factor in

Essay Double Blind Randomized Controlled Trial
Double Blind Randomized Controlled Trial
The controlled and randomized double blind trials refer to a situation in which a medicine investigator
is not familiar with the nature of a drug. The term may also mean that a scientist does not realize that a
drug is being tested maybe for certain diseases. Such medicines may be under surveillance, and they
are only administered in a small prescribed amount in case of any side effects. For a typical scientific
research, the desires, expectations and beliefs can subconsciously influence, often, how people
perceive things. In clinical research and preliminary psychology, these values are broadly recognized,

Some of the initial researches were made to assess mesmerism, and were strictly performed with
blindfolds. The application of blind evaluation had been implemented by the 19th century by
homeopaths, and by early 14th century, was regulated by psychical investigators and psychologists.
However, in the 1930s, the capacity of blind methods merged with no cure control group in medical
tests was broadly acknowledged by a majority of health researchers, and just subsequent to World War
II did blind tests in unsystematic controlled assessment became a typical and normative procedure.
In medication and psychology, blind testing began as prevention against the unconventional, but its
universal significance has been renowned for orthodox study; it has been internalized. While
examiners in unorthodox medical and their incredulous columnists have been conscious of the likely
impacts of anticipation and credence for over two hundred years, and conventional health explorers
and psychologists for decades, this knowledge ha spread extensively throughout the scientific society.
The beliefs and prospects in other experimenters in other branches of science seem to be ignored.
There appears to be an implicit supposition that scientists in conventional grounds of study are
resistant to the broad code that values, needs and prospects can control,

Abstract A review of the main technologies currently available to produce wines with lower alcohol
(ethanol) levels was undertaken. These comprise technologies to reduce the initial sugar levels in the
grape juice; yeasts to produce less alcohol by diverting sugar metabolism to glycerol production; and
post fermentation technologies to remove some all of the alcohol from the wine. Some of the legal
issues around alcohol taxation and wine labelling are outlined, particularly those affecting export. The
major technologies are discussed, along with their limitations, particularly with regard to the effects
on sensory attributes (aroma and flavour). The potential for yeast strains with lower conversion
efficiencies is outlined, both for selected strains, for non Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts, and for
genetic modification. A summary of the application of reduced alcohol technologies

Measuring Measure Of Implicit Attitudes
MEASURING ATTITUDES
Implicit association test measure of implicit attitudes
All measures of sampling verbal behaviour
Social psychologists employ a variety of different measures in attempt to measure attitudes, which
cannot be directly measured due to their hypothetical and unobservable nature. However, they are
often inferable from behaviour. For example, a negative attitude towards smoking might be reflected
in moving away from someone who lights up in your vicinity (behaviour). Attitudes measures can be
explicit (i.e. participant is asked directly about their attitude towards an object e.g. opinion poll), or
implicit (i.e. measure wherein participants sub conscious attitudes are assessed without their
knowledge e.g...) (Haddock and Maio, 2008). Questionnaires are the most common measure of
attitudes, utilising one of four types of attitude measurement scales.
For example, Louis L. Thurstone (1887 1955) devised his equal interval scale in his 1928 work,
Attitudes can be measured , based on results obtained from a study on religious attitudes, ranging from
extremely positive to extremely negative (Thurstone and Chave, 1929). However, constructing such a
scale is a complicated and time consuming process. Items on the scale are assumed to have equal
intervals (i.e. items are divided into groups containing an equal range of numbers) between them, with
each representing a pre assigned value (e.g. Homosexuality is a choice attached value of 1;

  • 2. Cornell College Reflection 7. What summer experience has been of significance to you? Why? Summer of 2017 at Cornell s condensed 6 weeks semester with credit, taught by their professors was a sheer pleasure. It gave me a true preview of the college experience. I learn to speak with not talk to my professors and teaching assistants when I needed help and to discuss class topics to further my knowledge by exploring the topics with them in conversations. I learned to plan, such as checking my email frequently for posted assignments a week before they were due, instead of a day, like in high school. I had to learn to manage my time more effectively. No adult or parents telling me what to do; I was completely free. The Cornell Summer College allowed me to gain the responsibility that comes with real freedom. 8. Essay about Iran Engagement Policy Option Thirty four years ago, the Islamic Revolution changed not only the leadership of Iran but brought a complex and strained relationships with the United States. The focus of this paper is an analysis on an Iranian engagement policy option outlined in the CSIS Report The Gulf Kaleidoscope: Reflections on the Iranian Challenge . The international relations theory of liberalism is applied using the tenets of economic interdependence and democratic transparency. For three decades, exchanges between the United States and Iranian diplomats have been tactical, not strategic. There are various policy options that can be utilized effectively and strategically to communicate, ultimately negotiate, with Iran. Iran is a threat to regional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The essential features of an engagement policy option are a robust diplomatic strategy, reassessing economic sanctions, and Iranian international relations. The end state is an engagement strategy that prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. A diplomatic strategy is the best option in engaging Iran but it will require patience and a long term commitment. The impact to Iran over the past 34 years is a zcountry that is isolated from not only the Middle East but also the international community. Only through a bilateral diplomatic effort will the United States convince Iran to change its foreign policy. The focus of the bilateral discussions is Iran s nuclear program and the right to enrich uranium and an easing of the crippling sanctions on the Iranian economy. There is a belief Iran is amiable to discussing a inherent right to enrichment uranium as outlined in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, while seeking relief from the mandated United States and United Nations sanctions. Kenneth Waltz s article Why Iran Should Get the Bomb: Nuclear Balancing Would Mean Stability , outlines why punishing a state through economic sanctions does not inexorably derail its nuclear program. She enjoys linking what is happening here and overseas. She also works on a team to develop programs and do research concerning aids. In 1980 a strange new disease was growing, starting in Los Angeles. This disease presented vague symptoms such as weight loss, lack of energy, diarrhea, fevers and sweats, rashes, and swollen lymph nodes. These symptoms could be caused by any viral infectious. The unique thing is that these systems were chronic, progressive, and debilitating. Some patients presented very bad shortness of breath and a bad cough. With this they found that the patients had a rare fungal infection called Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP). There were also some cases concerning these symptoms in New York City. These cases are rare so the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noticed a spike in the drug Pentamidine (a drug used to treat PCP, typically used on cancer patients). • 5. Plato s Symposium, By Plato In the book, Plato s Symposium, by Plato, who was a philosopher in Greece, he illustrates the dialectic discussion at a party at Agathon s to celebrate his triumph of his first tragedy. In the Symposium; the guests Phaedrus, an Athenian aristocrat; Pausanias, the legal expert; Eryximachus, a physician; Aristophanes, eminent comic playwright; Agathon ,a tragic poet and host of the banquet; Socrates, eminent philosopher and Plato s teacher; and Alcibiades, a prominent Athenian statesman, orator and general; discuss their own versions and viewpoints to praise the god of love. First, we have Phaedrus, who starts to say that love is the most ancient of the gods and should be praiseworthy, next we have Eryximachus who states that love affects everything in the universe and that it should be protected, next we have Aristophanes, who states that the reason why love is on earth is because god has split humanity in half and that man should fear the gods and should embrace love to feel whole again, and last we have Socrates who suggests what Diotima explains that love is in the middle of two things or objects and has both characteristics. Phaedrus starts off the conversation of love stating how the god Love doesn t get much attention in songs and that he should be praiseworthy because he has helped men to gain honor and blessedness. This begins the symposium and functions as a way to tell the reader what the topic would be about and why the guests in the party should discuss it. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Visions Of Nature Reflection Report Visions of Nature Reflection Visions of Nature Reflection When the Visions of Nature project was first explained in the beginning of the course I was immediately worried about how I would be able to create something that represented the natural world in an artistic way. Personally, I am not the most skilled in the world of art through visual and esthetically pleasing mediums. My artistic peak was reached in kindergarten when I made an impressive elephant with finger paint before the school s annual trip to the National Zoo. At first I struggled with deciding what type of project to pursue. I wanted to do something meaningful and original, but the best I could think of was either to make a video or maybe a collage. It wasn t until I was walking back to my dorm room late one night when it presented itself, literally. It was a pretty peaceful evening when I was passing the Dominion residence building. I did not see or hear anyone or anything around me. It was completely silent when out of nowhere a shopping cart came rolling off the top set of stairs and crashed onto the grass in front of me. After the cart had ceased to move it was completely silent again. That is when I decided that I would make a shopping cart garden. It would be an interesting piece that would capture people s attention and would not require me to torture my fellow classmates with my sub par finger painting. The garden would give a tangible source for observers that would create a larger impact than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. African American Country Artist Essay Similar to Bailey and Pride, Darius Rucker, the third African American country singer to perform onstage at the Grand Ole Opry, did not enter the country music industry to make a pathway for other African Americans. Instead, Rucker had a passion for the guitar strumming, honky tonk melody, which he decided to pursue after his involvement with the rock band, Hootie and the Blowfish. Rucker said in an interview with the New York Times, Hate mail s been a part of my life; that s just the way it is. There s still people who don t want me to be singing country music, but I never want to let anybody tell me what I can do , which portrays Rucker s pride for his culture and how he does not let racial obscenities interfere with his music (Petrusich). African American artists are forced to battle through this hate mail and criticism in order to get their faces revealed in the country spotlight. If an artist lacks determination and vigor, it is hard for them to keep performing in front of audiences that are familiar with watching and listening to white country performers. Ultimately, many African Americans steer away from the country genre because they do not want to get discriminated against for not fitting the typical stereotype associated with being a country artist. • 9. The Importance Of Plagiarism In College Students In short: Don t do it. But in truth, that is not good enough. I have assigned and graded or had graded by TA s tens of thousands of bits of writing by college students over the years. A lot of my friends are teachers. My wife is a teacher. I ve seen it all. If you are a student trying to avoid getting caught plagiarizing, I can help you. You need to know the following three things. These facts will save you from getting tossed out of college or having a mark on your high school record. 1) Teachers hate plagiarism more than they hate stepping on puppies and kittens. If there are two students in a class, and one has plagiarized an assignment and one has crushed some puppies and kittens, and the teacher only has time to turn one of them it to the administration, they ll turn in the plagiarizer. 2) There has almost never been a case where a student was proved to have plagiarized something (by matching the original to the student s paper) where the plagiarism wasn t already blindingly obvious to the teacher to begin with. In other words, when you plagiarize something, it is always spotted immediately. If some other student tells you that they got away with it, they are lying to you (like House says, people always lie) or the teacher chose to not turn them in. Yet. Given this, you should understand that plagiarism is never a good strategy for improving your grade. Just don t do it. ________________________________ Check out our new science podcast, Ikonokast. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Comparison s The Trolley Problem By Judith Jarvis Thomson The article, The Trolley Problem , written by Judith Jarvis Thomson, poses an intense ethical argument. Within the reading, she addresses two of Philippa Foot s imaginary situations. The first involves a trolley with faulty brakes, and if the driver should flip the switch to kill five people or just one person. The second is a similar situation; should a doctor let five patients die or operate on one patient to take his organs without consent? I will argue that it is not morally permissible to turn the trolley or to operate without consent. This article starts with an interesting scenario. A trolley is speeding down its tracks. As the trolley is coming around a turn, the driver sees five men working on the tracks. Luckily, the driver of the trolley has the option to flip a switch to make the trolley turn to the right onto a separate section of the tracks. It is not that simple, though. On the right spur of the tracks, one man is working. Philippa Foot has arranged that no matter which way the driver turns, it would be impossible for the workmen to get off the track safely and on time to avoid being run down by the trolley (Thomson 1395). As a first instinct, the driver tries to slam on the trolley s brakes to avoid hitting any of the workmen. Unfortunately, the brakes on the trolley do not work. Thus, the driver is left facing this situation: should he continue going straight or should he quickly turn the trolley to the right? If he stays straight, he will continue hurdling towards the five helpless workmen, inevitably hitting and killing all five of them. If he flips to switch to turn the trolley right, the driver will undoubtedly hit the lone workman and take his life (Thomson 1395). Now here is the real catch of the situation: the reader is the trolley driver. It is up to the reader of this article to decide what route to take. Would the reader, in the driver s situation, keep the trolley straight, or turn it to the right? Thomson explains that when she gave such a hypothetical case to several people, the consensus was overwhelmingly harmonious. Many readers believed that it was morally permissible for you to turn the trolley (Thomson 1395). Some say that it is completely necessary to turn the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to a recent figure from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been a total of 28616 Ebola cases and 11310 deaths from Ebola in these three countries (2014). There were many unpalatable symptoms of the disease, such as fever, headache, joint and muscle pain, widespread bleeding, diarrhea and other physical symptoms leading to high mortality (Van Bortel). Many West African survivors have to deal with their new negative image, negative lasting health effects, or a decrease in financial stability due to their inability to work or find work after they recover. • 22. Persuasive Essay On The School Should Start Time Should school start at 7:00 or should it start later in the morning? In Douglas High School, start times are at 7:30 in the morning. Changing the school schedule to a later start time would result in many other changes affecting a lot of people. According to the National Sleep Foundation, The change will affect the entire community, from students and parents to businesses, libraries, police, youth sports clubs, bus drivers and many others. Altering the school schedule would influence numerous aspects of people s lives. Highly coordinated routines would have to be changed and adapted to the new schedule. A later release time would take time off of students free time in the afternoon. Clubs, sports, jobs, and other after school activities would have to be pushed back later into the evening. School start times should stay earlier in the morning, since changing routines would be difficult, students need free time, and after school activities would be pushed back. Perhaps the biggest concern for parents would be having to change and reorganize their carefully planned, traditional routines. Many people are resistant to change, especially if it involves reassembling their plans and procedures to adjust to the new schedule. This is a problem for parents work schedules since they most likely will not be able to see their kids in the morning which will leave students unsupervised when they get ready. This is also a problem for transportation since parents will not be able to take their kids to school, unnecessarily causing traffic and more costs since bus schedules would change too. According to the National Sleep Foundation, If elementary students have the earliest start times, they may be waiting for the bus in the dark early mornings, or waiting at home alone after school. Later start times are thought to solve tardies and absences, but if students cannot get to school, it does not solve anything. A change in the school schedule will result in disorder in many people s daily routines, perhaps having to discard certain activities to fully adjust to the new schedule. One such area which I would like to explore in terms of functionality and cost effectiveness would be the Construction Industry. The last time a global survey for homelessness was attempted by the United Nations in 2005 an estimated 100 million people were homeless worldwide. As many as 1.6 billion people lacked adequate housing [1]. In the United States, on a single night in January 2015, 564,708 people were experiencing homelessness meaning they were sleeping outside or in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program [2]. In 2013, the Slum population in India went up from 52 million to 65 million and it has been predicted to rise to 104 million [3]. Looking at the statistics, the main cause for homelessness could be contributed to cost of affordable housing. Another example that could be considered could be of people living in disaster prone areas where people lose their houses overnight. In such scenarios, 3D printing could be a viable solution where houses could be printed in a couple of days as compared to traditional construction methods where people need to seek out emergency shelters till their houses are built. • 25. The Nature Of The Poetry Of Percy Shelley s Mutability Shelley Percy is one of the most highly regarded Romantic poets of the 19th century. Many of Shelley s poem tell about the nature of the human condition. In many of his poems Shelley use elements of nature (seashells, the wind, the ocean, etc.) to discuss truths about the human condition. Percy Shelley examines the one consistent characteristic of being human in his poem Mutability . In his poem Mutability Shelley shows the fragility and unpredictability of the human condition. The poem opens with the speaker comparing humans to clouds that veil the midnight moon (Line 1). The clouds move radiantly across the sky and cover the light of the moon. The words speed , gleam , quiver and streaking personify the cloud image. Shelley describes the cloud s actions as a metaphor for human actions, How restlessly they speed, and gleam, and quiver, / streaking the darkness radiantly! (Lines 2 3). He believes that humans go through life with speed, not taking time to rest; like clouds at night, we do not last forever. Shelley s use of the word of veil instead of covers creates a sense of purposefully hidden light. In lines three to four of the poem the wondrous sight is eventually extinguished by the darkness, yet soon/ Night closes round, and they are lost forever. By using this image of the night Shelley shows the cycle of change and demonstrates human morality. The speaker is pointing out that humans have short lives on Earth and regardless of how radiantly we may shine, we are like clouds at night that are overshadowed. In the second stanza Shelley describes the frailty of human existence. In lines five through nine humans are describes as forgotten lyres, whose dissonant strings/ Give various response to each varying blast,/ To whose frail frame no second motion brings/ One mood or modulation like the last. Shelley uses this as a metaphor that expands on the concept of human morality. In this stanza humans are compared to forgotten lyres saying that we will be forgotten when we are dead and gone. The different moods of the stanza are created by the different sounds of the lyre. Humans are being compared to instruments with beautifully melodies have been forgotten. Many countries don t have access to basic needs such as education, health care, law and order, safety why is that? Why is there a gap between rich and poor? How did some countries manage to become rich while others remained poor? These are the regularly asked questions about the development of countries. There are different perspectives on the growth of countries; however the three main theories mentioned in the book are due to geography, culture, ignorance or institutions. The authors of Why nations fail Acemoglu and Robhinson have challenged these theories . They believe that political institutions are the main factors for development of a well functioning nation and the determinants of economic institutions. It s all about institutions, Daron Acemoglu, one of the authors, explained. It s really about human made systems, rules, regulations, formal or informal that creates different incentives. The book explains over the years how institutions played a big role for the failure or success of nations. It is filled with interesting historical stories and evidence from Latin America, England, Europe, Africa, Roman Empire and the Mayans .The geography hypothesis states that land and people are the reasons for failure or success of a nation. • 27. Persuasive Essay On Marijuana The United States was once a country that enslaved African American people because of their skin color. America has progressed significantly since slavery was abolished over 150 years ago; however, there are still significant differences the land of the free continues to make between races in. As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Across the country, minorities, specifically African Americans, are being unfairly targeted and arrested for marijuana related crimes compared to Caucasians. The state must stand up against this and propose a change in the strict laws surrounding marijuana, or also known as cannabis. The disparities in arrest rates are caused by the bias and generalizations law enforcement and society have towards minorities. This disproportionality is proven based off arrest data gathered from different states, counties, and cities ( The war on marijuana in black and white, 2013). The discrepancy in apprehensions involving cannabis has become a noteworthy social problem that has led to some states already implementing and adopting new policies on marijuana use. The ultimate goal is for Texas to pass a bill legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, Texas can adopt plan in place similar to that of the other five states that have already allowed the private consumption of marijuana. This package would outline a discounted price for a set amount of people to travel on a certain cruise ship. • 36. Describe The Semipermeability Of The Cell Membrane The membrane around the cells in the body is the boundary that keeps them from reaching the surroundings on the outside. It allows for certain substances to pass through to the cells rather than others, and it contains proteins and lipids such as phospholipids (cholesterol) (Erster 3). The simplest membranes are known as a phospholipid bilayer, given that there are two layers containing hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails allowing the membrane to have its semipermeability. The tails on both layers face the inside towards each other, while the heads are on the outside (Erster 4). They have a fluidity to it, being able to move from side to side, and rarely flip due to having to move through areas that are hydrophobic (afraid of water) and hydrophilic (attracted to water) since it would take a lot of energy to do so (Erster 10). ... Effects Of Birth Control On American Women s Lives Effects of the Birth Control Pill on American Women s Lives Over the centuries, women have tried a number of methods to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Some of the pregnancy control measures that existed before the invention of the pill included abstinence and withdrawal. Unfortunately, such methods often failed to prevent unintended pregnancies. As such, birth control advocates continued researching for effective birth control methods. Americans did not meet the idea of birth control methods with enthusiasm. In fact, those who advocated the use of birth control devices experienced challenges, including being jailed. In the 1950s, birth control pills were introduced in the United States (Windsor, 2002). Over the past seven decades, the pill has changed the American women s lives in several ways. The Victorian Era: Collin s Challenging Traditional Gender Roles In 1868, British author Wilkie Collins wrote what is now famously known as one of the first full length detective stories, The Moonstone. Within this text, he explores and transcends his writing style, as he created an atmosphere full of suspense and gothic tradition by making use of two genres famous in the Victorian Era (Ayton, 2). As Collins managed to challenge the roles of men and women within The Moonstone, he ultimately attempts to reverse genders by creating a story of conflict, where the women are essentially in charge. As many gender stereotypes are expressed within The Moonstone through the different narrators of the novel, almost all of them become discredited as we are introduced to the other characters. By making use of the characters like Betteredge, Lady Verinder, and finally Rachel Verinder, Collins novel proves to break society s barrier of expected roles for men and women within the Victorian Era. During the Victorian period, men and women s roles became more sharply defined than at any time in history. This concept of roles, became extremely significant within Wilkie Collins The Moonstone (1868), as he incorporated the issues seen during that era, with the roles and expectations of the women in his novel. There are a lot of paintings and sculpture relate to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Not only a political symbol, she also a very meaningful symbol for people in the entire region, not just in Mexico. Stylistic The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, whether one considers only the core image or the image with the additions, certainly belongs to a style of artistic depiction of the Virgin Mary called the Immaculate Conception, a style that became quite popular in Europe, including Spain, during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, growing in relationship to the development of theological speculation about Mary s own conception. • 46. Affected And Benefited Population . It Is Very Hard To Affected and benefited population It is very hard to believe someone actually benefits from China s air pollution, but it is true. For those companies that manufacture filter masks and air purifications products, they make dibs on the air pollution. Air purifiers market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 18% during 2016 to 2021, according to TechSci Research Report. Those who can afford the price would like to install purifiers at homes, schools, offices, subway stations, airports and so on, at least as a kind of psychological comfort. Wealthy populations who live either in the urban or far away from polluted rural areas can financially defend themselves by by improving indoor air quality through air purifiers, wearing the best ... On the most recent reports from Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People s Republic of China from 16th to 22nd this April, it clearly shows that rural areas still violate air pollution regulations. There were 285 out of 450 enterprises did not meet emission standard for the first round of selective monitoring, including 7 major suburb districts in Beijing. For the second round, 248 out of 396 enterprises did not meet emission standard in BTH regions. There were also 169 out of 250 enterprises had environmental related issues that could not meet the standard, including defective devices, tampering data and disturbance of monitoring. However, the only punishment from the report is serious warning and let local government process the rest , which is very irresponsible. If there is no follow up, what is the point of mentoring? When it eventually comes to grassroots, what power do they have? Is social unrest a concern in Beijing? These questions require more social scholars attentions and studies in the future. However, I have remembered a lecture taught by French Ambassador Laurence Tubiana, she says that social movement is important for the people inside. Social movement can make a change and indirect affect the decision making process. We cannot deny the effort and resolution from Beijing government, but efficiency is also considered as a key factor in the process of fighting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Essay Double Blind Randomized Controlled Trial Double Blind Randomized Controlled Trial The controlled and randomized double blind trials refer to a situation in which a medicine investigator is not familiar with the nature of a drug. The term may also mean that a scientist does not realize that a drug is being tested maybe for certain diseases. Such medicines may be under surveillance, and they are only administered in a small prescribed amount in case of any side effects. For a typical scientific research, the desires, expectations and beliefs can subconsciously influence, often, how people perceive things. In clinical research and preliminary psychology, these values are broadly recognized, thus explaining the rationale on why studies from subjects are regularly carried out under ... The application of blind evaluation had been implemented by the 19th century by homeopaths, and by early 14th century, was regulated by psychical investigators and psychologists. However, in the 1930s, the capacity of blind methods merged with no cure control group in medical tests was broadly acknowledged by a majority of health researchers, and just subsequent to World War II did blind tests in unsystematic controlled assessment became a typical and normative procedure. In medication and psychology, blind testing began as prevention against the unconventional, but its universal significance has been renowned for orthodox study; it has been internalized. While examiners in unorthodox medical and their incredulous columnists have been conscious of the likely impacts of anticipation and credence for over two hundred years, and conventional health explorers and psychologists for decades, this knowledge ha spread extensively throughout the scientific society. The beliefs and prospects in other experimenters in other branches of science seem to be ignored. There appears to be an implicit supposition that scientists in conventional grounds of study are resistant to the broad code that values, needs and prospects can control, ... Abstract A review of the main technologies currently available to produce wines with lower alcohol (ethanol) levels was undertaken. These comprise technologies to reduce the initial sugar levels in the grape juice; yeasts to produce less alcohol by diverting sugar metabolism to glycerol production; and post fermentation technologies to remove some all of the alcohol from the wine. Some of the legal issues around alcohol taxation and wine labelling are outlined, particularly those affecting export. The major technologies are discussed, along with their limitations, particularly with regard to the effects on sensory attributes (aroma and flavour). The potential for yeast strains with lower conversion efficiencies is outlined, both for selected strains, for non Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts, and for genetic modification. A summary of the application of reduced alcohol technologies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Measuring Measure Of Implicit Attitudes MEASURING ATTITUDES Implicit association test measure of implicit attitudes All measures of sampling verbal behaviour Social psychologists employ a variety of different measures in attempt to measure attitudes, which cannot be directly measured due to their hypothetical and unobservable nature. However, they are often inferable from behaviour. For example, a negative attitude towards smoking might be reflected in moving away from someone who lights up in your vicinity (behaviour). Attitudes measures can be explicit (i.e. participant is asked directly about their attitude towards an object e.g. opinion poll), or implicit (i.e. measure wherein participants sub conscious attitudes are assessed without their knowledge e.g...) (Haddock and Maio, 2008). Questionnaires are the most common measure of attitudes, utilising one of four types of attitude measurement scales. For example, Louis L. Thurstone (1887 1955) devised his equal interval scale in his 1928 work, Attitudes can be measured , based on results obtained from a study on religious attitudes, ranging from extremely positive to extremely negative (Thurstone and Chave, 1929). However, constructing such a scale is a complicated and time consuming process. Items on the scale are assumed to have equal intervals (i.e. items are divided into groups containing an equal range of numbers) between them, with each representing a pre assigned value (e.g. Homosexuality is a choice attached value of 1; Homosexuality is ...
