Goldfish have longer attention spans than Americans. Yes, you read that correctly. As you may already
know, the attention span is the amount of time an individual is able to concentrate on one particular

goldfish is 9 seconds and due to the effects of various sources of media, this is now one second greater

Initially, as I read this quote, I began to sympathize with Pecola and the plight she faces as an African
American female. This is the first time in the novel we are exposed to the desire Pecola vehemently

attaining blue eyes for her would be impossible, is because she blames her blue lacking eye color, or

The beginning of Chapter 3 provided insight into the violent nature of Pecola s parents as well as a
good amount of dialogue that provides a strong image that I can use to characterize them with. The
dialogue spoken by her parents is English deeply rooted in African American slang and culture, full of
local color. Knowing this, I was astounded when I drew the parallel that Pecola established in the
example quote above when she was imagining how life would be if she were to have blue eyes. When
she pictures her parents reactions if she did exhibit the trait of blue eyes in her head, she imagines
their dialogue as less slang and gives it a more formal, proper form of diction. I found this to be
interesting because, in my mind, she is creating a correlation between the Caucasian feature she yearns
for and the language and behavior of her parents if she were to possess this trait. It almost seems that
she has ingrained so deep into her mind the beauty of blue eyes that anything and everything that she
could associate them with, including language and how one speaks, even appeals to
