Joseph Conrad Research Paper
Joseph Conrad was born Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski on December 3, 1857 to Polish parents in
Berdychiv, Ukraine. During his early life, Conrad didn t show the inspiration and desire to become an
author. With novels like Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness, and The Secret Agent, Conrad didn t gain
inspiration for them from other novels, but from his seafaring career as a marine merchant. Although
Joseph Conrad rise to fame could have been seen as unconventional because of his early life, the
legacy that he left behind was nothing less than amazing due to the success of his novels and the
influences that they had on other prominent authors in the future. (bio.com)

The novel was an adventure tale set in the Borneo jungles and was widely successful for him. With his
first being a huge success, Joseph Conrad begin writing two more novels that would end up being his
most famous and enduring. Lord Jim and Heart of Darkness, became two of Conrad most important
novels that only cemented his name as one of the most famous author. Lord Jim, written in 1900 was a
story about an outcast young sailor who came to terms with his pasts act of cowardice, and turned out
to become the leader of a small South Seas country. On the other hand, Heart of Darkness, written in
1902, was a novel that described a British man s journey deep into the Congo of Africa. Along his
journey, the man would encounters the cruel and mysterious Kurtz. In these two literary pieces, many
of signature elements of Conrad s writing can be seen. Faraway settings, dramatic conflicts between
human characters and nature, and the themes of individualism are just some of the many different
writing style that could have been seen in both literary pieces. Throughout Conrad s story and novel,
he was very contempted to show situations that drew parallels between the inner lives of single
characters and the broader sweep of human history. The success of Lord Jim, and Heart of Darkness,
didn t slow down Conrad from creating more novel, but only fueled the fire that gave him

Problem Of Clapham Omnibus
The Reasonable Man :
It has been held by the courts that the test of reasonableness is that of the ordinary man or also called
as the reasonable man . In Bolam case, it was discussed that:
In an ordinary case it is generally said you judge it by the action of the man in the street. He is the
ordinary man. In one case it has been said you judge it by the conduct of the man on the top of a
Clapham omnibus. He is the ordinary man.
Why the mention of Clapham omnibus ? The Bolam judgment was pronounced in 1957 and Clapham,
at that time, was a nondescript south London suburb. It represented ordinary London. Omnibus was
used at that time for the public bus. Thus, the man on the top of a Clapham omnibus was a
hypothetical person, who was reasonably educated and intelligent but was a non specialist.
The courts used to judge the conduct of any defendant by comparing it with that of the hypothetical
ordinary man .

Therefore, medical professionals must learn how to prevent malpractice litigation, rather than fighting

must be aware that they are expected to seek advice and assistance where they lack experience in

Investigation Into Real Life Incidents
Up until 1968, the idiom, Forensic Linguistics, had not been used, and it is only since then that law
enforcement agencies have recognised the importance that is has upon the analysis of statements and
of courtroom interaction (Ollson, J. (2008, pg. 3 4.) In the past, the application of linguistics to
language, crime and law, involved the enforcement of Judges Rules within the legal system, in which
suspects had to dictate their narrative to police officers, then the officer would type it out in their own
words, which would often result in invalid statements (Ollson, J, 2008, pg. 3.) However, with forensic
linguistics having only recently matured as a method of analysis, it is now customary for investigators
to consider these various possible areas within their research, such as authorship comparison and the
concept of plagiarism within texts.
Therefore, in a world where Forensic Linguistics is used as a form of investigation into real life
incidents, it is of upmost importance to underpin its validity. The inclusion of real world case study
examples will assist in the overall outcome of the conclusion of this assignment as to whether
Forensic Linguistics can be interpreted as a valid form of investigation and if it s expertise is reliable
for the judge and jury (Solan, L. Tiersma, P. M, 2002, pg. 221.) Subsequently, this essay will explore
the relevant notions of authorship attribution and the use of plagiarism within documents, through the

Agile methodology follows iterative development method which make it more suitable to use for light
weight projects where the changes are frequent. Waterfall on other case is a heavy weight
methodology with no changes or iterations allowed once the project starts. Here the requirements are
fixed and any change later is not accommodated and will be considered as a new project. Both the
methodologies are adopted for a project based on its type and requirement. In this paper We have
applied both Waterfall and Agile methods to a Service Delivery platform project of a telecom

Babylonian Empire Religion
What can be learnt of personal and state religion from the religious and divine iconography and
symbolism present on kudurru from European museum collections?
Following the collapse of the first Babylonian Dynasty and the so termed golden age of Hammurabi s
reign, the Babylonian kingdom eventually stabilised under the influence of the new Kassite Dynasty.
The Kassites promptly implemented the Babylonian language as well as Babylonian cultural values
and traditions. They introduced the use of stone steles known as kudurrus. The evidence of the use of
kudurrus dictates that later dynasties continued the practice until the 7th century BC.
Kudurrus are defined and identifiable by their form, imagery and inscriptions. The most common

I would like to include a brief explanation of the refocus of my initial question. Prior to my study tour,
after several meetings with my study tour supervisor I was advised that I should broaden my question
to investigate depictions and representations of religion within Mesopotamia, and simultaneously to
keep an open mind regarding objects from European collections which could potentially help me
narrow down my ideas if I was inspired to do so. During the study tour it became apparent that many
of the objects which I had initially expected to be able to assist me in answering my question were not
usable in my report. One of the major obstacles was the design of some exhibitions and displays.
Although I found these exhibitions to be innovative and extremely accessible to the public, an
unfortunate consequence was that various objects became difficult to properly represent through
photography, obscured by magnifying glasses, mirrors and specialised lighting. These factors
ultimately led to a minor refocus and a narrowing down of my question to focus on

Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) is known to be the second most common nosocomial infection
found in intensive care units. VAP has been associated with increased mortality, morbidity, and health
related costs. A study by the University of Faisalabad (Pakistan) was published by the Journal of
University Medical Dental College to determine if the severity of VAP can be prevented through the
implementation of comprehensive strategies and clinical practices. In this study, eighty six ventilated

These short term mental storage and manipulation operations are collectively called working memory.
Think of working memory as involving a mental blackboard that is, as a workspace that provides a
temporary holding store so that relevant information is highly accessible and available for inspection

the process can begin again with other information.

The computer, so useful a metaphor in cognitive psychology, offers an intuitively appealing model for

Simplifying the workings of a computer, there are two means by which information is stored, the hard
disk and random access memory (RAM). The hard disk is the means by which information is stored
permanently in a stable and reliable form; all software programs, data files, and the operating system
of the computer are stored on the hard disk. To use this stored information you must retrieve it from
the hard disk and load it into RAM. Now for the analogy: the information stored in the hard disk is
like long term memory, RAM corresponds to working memory. The notion of working memory as a

Biographical Summary Of Bram Stoker s Dracula
Biographical Summary
Abraham Stoker was born on November 8, 1847, in Clontarf, Ireland, although when his name was to
appear on the front cover of the critically acclaimed gothic horror novel, Dracula, fifty years later, he
would have long since adopted an abbreviated version of his name, Bram. When Stoker was born, he
had two older siblings, and would later get into the habit of living with four younger ones. (Novels for
Students 23). During his formative years, he came down with a serious illness, and was confined to his
bed for the first seven years of his life. He read a great many books in the process of recovery, and his
mother, Charlotte, often told him disturbing horror stories of sickness, particularly the ravaging effects
of the cholera ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While in the company of Henry Irving, Stoker met with some intriguing people, one of which supplied
him with Eastern European vampire lore. Over the next several years, while he was working on
Dracula, Stoker conducted a decent amount of research in order to make his literary masterpiece more
authentic. After its publication in 1897, Dracula was generally well received, but it never earned much
money within Stoker s lifetime. He failed at his attempts to turn it into a theatre production, and the
book was not adapted into successful films until over two decades later. After 1997, life for Stoker and
Irving started to go downhill. They lost Lyceum Theatre, and Henry Irving died in 1905. Stoker
became gradually lamer and sicker over the years, but he did not concede his writing career. His 1903
novel, The Jewel of Seven Stars, achieved popularity and success. He also wrote The Lady of the
Shroud, published in 1903, and Famous Imposters, published in 1910. The Lair of the White Worm
was published in 1911 when Stoker was very ill, and hence, this became one of his stranger novels.
On April 20, 1912, Bram Stoker died, supposedly of general paresis, but his legacy of Dracula lived
on, well into the twenty first century

Archetypal Patterns In Little Miss Sunshine And As I Lay...
Characters in stories follow archetypal patterns, whether it is something as simple as hero vs. villain,
or something more elaborate like a scapegoat or a rake. In the movie Little Miss Sunshine we follow
the Hoover family on their quest to fulfill self motivated goals, similar to that of the novel As I Lay
Dying by William Faulkner. In the novel, Faulkner sets up the premise for one of the most widely
accepted journey plots in literature, and the archetypal themes are carried over into the movie Little
Miss Sunshine. There are many parallels between the novel and the movie, including the more
contemporary ideas of a journey portrayed in Little Miss Sunshine. Following an archetypal basis, the
movie provides the audience with the hardships ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With a primary goal in mind, they must reach California in order for Olive to compete in the pageant
similar to the goal set in mind of the Bundrens (Arndt). Using the model that As I Lay Dying puts for
the journey archetype, Little Miss Sunshine follows a similar flow of journey, obstacle, and repeat.
The first real obstacle that the Hoovers encounter is their car breaking down. Similar to the loss of the
wagon that the Bundrens suffered at the river, their means of transportation is sabotaged. While the
Hoover s solution was much simpler, just having to push [the car] up to ten, fifteen miles an hour to
get the transmission into gear, the obstacle that was placed in front of them was still big enough to
cause them a delay on their time sensitive quest (Arndt). The modern idea of poverty is also another
big obstacle that the Hoovers must overcome. Coming from a lower class family, their car breaks
down; they don t have any insurance, and are unable to take care of grandpa after he passes away.
Having to resort to drastic measures, most of their decisions aren t thought through very carefully and
are instead sporadic and on the spot. Being virtually broke, Richard has to juggle his personal and
professional life, teaching twenty students in a classroom that could seat two hundred (Arndt). Life

Religion In Othello Research Paper
This paper presents a New Historicism theoretical framework for considering religion as a force that
compels the actions of characters in a piece of literature, as influenced by the society of the time
period. Rendering historical pieces from the Church of England, works by Christopher Baker, Harry
Morris, Joseph Sterrett, and close reading of Shakespeare s Othello, I show how religion in the form
of symbolism and marital duties proves to be a compelling force in Othello s unsuccessful conversion
to Christianity. The role of conversion in Shakespeare s Othello proves to be a point of interpretation
of numerous scholars. While looking at Othello, it is important to consider the role of religion. Does
Christianity influence the actions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The official religion of England had converted from Catholicism to Protestant multiple times during
the reign of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Queen Mary I, and Queen Elizabeth I (Buchanan). The Book of
Common Prayer was published to establish unity among the people and to provide a consistent
religion across the land. Defining what it means to be a Christian is the first crucial step to
understanding the leverage that religion has on Othello. The Book of Common Prayer discusses in
multiple cases the desire to be without sin and wickedness and contains a morning prayer that
specifies O Lord: to keep us this day without sin (18 19). For the purpose of this paper, a Christian
will be defined as a person who strives to live in a manner without sin or wickedness.
In Shakespeare s Othello, Iago claims that [t]o win the Moor, weren t to renounce his baptism/All
seals and symbols of redeemed sin (2.3.334). Iago s reference to Othello s baptism indicates that
Othello completed the Christian ritual of baptism after converting to the religion. However, Iago also
insinuates that Othello would renounce his baptism as a means to secure Desdemona. Iago places the
idea in the reader s mind that while Othello is a Christian, there are situations that would cause him to

The Song Structure And Analysis Of Mystery Song 3
At first listen, Mystery Song Three was unlike anything I had ever heard. I knew it was loud, I knew it
was aggressive, and that was about it. We were challenged with analyzing a mystery song by defining
its structure, basic description, expression, and historical and cultural context. Even without knowing
anything about the song, you can find these elements just by listening to it. 2. Song Structure A song s
structure can be best described as its organization. I found that Mystery Song Three is a ABABC
modified verse chorus form. This means there was five vocal sections with three different types of
sections A the verse, B the chorus, C the conclusion. For clarification I have named each of the five
vocal sections as follows: vocal section 1 A1, vocal section 2 B1, vocal section 3 A2, vocal section 4
B2, vocal section 5 C. The song began with an instrumental introduction. At first, there was only the
cymbals playing but very quickly the texture thickened when guitar and drums came in. These were
both aggressive and fast paced. Section A1 was the first verse section of the song. Since this was the
first time that the vocalist came in we learned that the vocalist was male with a rough sound and
midrange voice. The instrumentation of this section featured a repeating guitar riff and drum sounds.
Overall, this section had an angry sound emphasized with swear words and angry lyrics, had a heavy
texture created by the guitar and drums, and had a fast tempo. This section was then followed by an
instrumental section to create a transition from A1 to B1. Section B1 was the first chorus. This section
also featured a fast tempo, aggressive guitar part, and percussion. However, this section had slower
vocals than A1. Additionally, new vocal techniques were used such as blues influenced slides on the
lyric No . Also the rhythm changed which emphasized the lyric burnt in to my skin to further relate the
anger in the song. After another instrumental break, A2 verse began. The melody of A1 repeats with a
very similar instrumental part. However, the lyrics from A1 are different, and a No shout is added
differing more from A1. This further communicates and anger and frustration expression in the song.

FQ3: How does social media change the way people eat?
Most of the foods on social media are advertise by fast food restaurants, which are unhealthy foods.
The survey result shows that 65% of the respondents believe that foods on social media are unhealthy
as shown in figure 8. Fast food advertising is most likely be called junk food advertising (Herron,

users to promote unhealthy food which can result to obesity and lifestyle diseases (The University of
Sydney, 2014) (Lee, 2014). Research says advertising promotes unhealthy habits, affect children s
preference and urging them to eat salty, sugary and greasy foods (Herron, 2014). For instance, fast
food restaurants offer chips and drink to answer a survey about their restaurant. In figure 9, 92% of the
respondents buy fast food because of advertisements and promotion. Social advertisements affect the
way people eat since it encourages people to eat unhealthy food using voucher and answering surveys

The Mafia s Influence On Hip Hop
The Mafia s influence on Hip Hop In Rap, there is a unique culture, history, social impact and

When talking about the American Mafia, mostly it s referring to the Italians and their influence.
During the height of the Mafia its influence on society was massive and mostly in a negative way. In
pop culture, the Mafia represented violence, gang affiliations, and criminals. Although, in the
perspective of our generation today some view them as heroes. The reason for this is mostly from the
rise of hip hop in society and how people view it. The Mafia s impact on hip hop goes up against
various structures, glorifying the lives of mobsters over a significant time span such as Al Capone,

The Music Industry Is An Oligopoly
The music industry is an oligopoly. Since the late 1800 s people like Thomas Edison have been buying
up patents in communication technology, forming monopolies, leading to a non competitive
entertainment industry. With only a handful of corporations controlling all aspects of acquisition,
distribution and marketing of music, harsh business principles create an exploitative industry that
takes the best of what artists have to offer and leaves many of them unable to support themselves.
Beginning in the 1950 s with payola and white cover music and ultimately evolving into iTunes and
Spotify, the music industry has grown into a billion dollar industry with far reaching influence and
control. Contracts rarely serve the artists best interest and many are left out to dry when their
usefulness has expired.
In the 1950 s, radio was struggling to keep ratings against the emerging new television craze. Music
executives began to pay disk jockeys to play their music. It is called payola and it is still in practice
today, although it is technically illegal. The record companies write off the legal fines imposed by the
Federal Communications Act as an expense of promotion (Campbell p.88). Black artists in the 50 s
were writing some of the most inventive and marketable music of the time, but their music was still
not palatable to a white audience as long as it was played by black musicians. Record companies
began buying the songs of poor black musicians and giving them to their exclusively

Researching the Asian American Culture Essay
Researching the Asian American Culture
There are fundamental differences between Eastern and Western cultures and the meeting of these
cultures has had several effects, both in Asia and here in the US. Overseas, you can see the
juxtaposition of American pop culture on the older modes of Asian thought and society. Here, New
Age religions find new excuses in Asian religions and philosophies and Anime is appears regularly on
Saturday morning cartoons. Often, this juxtaposition becomes turbulent as the younger generations are
caught between two seemingly opposing cultures. As a result, crime rates rise with the integration of
Western ideals and culture into Asian society. This is true here in America too as the first generation of

US would no longer accept Japanese immigration. By 1920, local movements resulted in Asians being
unable to become naturalized citizens, this group now included Koreans, Filipinos, and Indian Asians.

In 1942, the anti Asian sentiment took a different turn. As a result of America s involvement in the
Second World War, the anti Japanese sentiment strengthened and culminated in President Franklin D.
Roosevelt s Executive Order 9066. This gave the government the power to restrict any person from
areas that the government deemed necessary for military purposes. This was almost invariably aimed
at Japanese residents and internment camps sprung up across the west coast. This included not only
first generation descendants, Issei, but second generation, Nissei, and their descendants as well. At this
time, 62% of the Japanese population in the US were American citizens by birth and often had no
connections to their ancestral home beyond their heritage. All told, 120,000 Japanese were held until
the war ended. (for more info: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/8420/main.html)

Defining job requirements through a detailed analysis provides employers the right tool to hire the
most qualified personnel. Developing a structural approach to obtain the ideal employee is
challenging. Several key factors that impede planning for talent acquisition, include failing to develop
a talent strategy that aligns with organizational goals, not focusing on developing talent at the middle
and senior levels, and not understanding the type of individuals who are interested in working in the
organization. (Bugg, 2015) Supervisors must ensure an accurate job analysis is accomplished to avoid
future problems defining job requirements, while trying to hire new employees.
University s Mission and Vision
The Director used the University s mission and vision statements, along with the core values, to
accomplish the Registrar job analysis and ensure duties reflected the overall University objectives.

institutions increasingly recognize that faculty members are the most valued mission capital when it
comes to delivering a quality product. (Foster, 2015) The University s mission and vision are to

What s Wrong With Wharton Summary
Before I started reading Melissa Korn s article What s Wrong with Wharton? and Matt Symonds What
s Right with Wharton? I can somehow recognize the contradict ideas between the two by just looking
at their titles. To me, What s Wrong with Wharton? is well supported and well researched, and those
are the two factors that made the article sounds perfectly credible. Moreover, I think Korn is doing a
great job writing such an attention grabbing article as well as maintaining her writing style, keeping
the article sounds informative without using words that are too strong and emotional. Wharton under
Korn s written, is loosing its attraction for MBA applicants and this is indicating something wrong
with Wharton. In addition, Korn uses

How Human Resource Management Is The Need For Labour
One of the most important aspects of human resource management is the need for labour. It is critical
for organizations to hire and motivate employees to perform at their maximum efficiency. As such,
what motivates people is a simple question that has been attempted to be answered by many
professionals alike. The complexity of the question itself is due to the fact that although people can be
segmented into different demographic groups, every person is different.
The important role of employee motivation is something that both employers and employees should
be aware of. There are many clear benefits to having an stellar workforce for organizations. For
example, for an organization to achieve organizational excellence they need to determine what drives
each employee. This can be achieved by an employer simply by taking the time to connect with their
employees and implementing work related goals. As a result, the organization benefits because the
employee will benefit. This benefits both parties because the connection between employee and
employer allows for meaningful exchanges of what is expected from each. An individual s task
performance may increase due to a management by objective plan set jointly with an employer.
Additionally, the employee will feel that they add value to an organization by achieving productivity
goals. This will further increase not only the employees career development and overall efficiency in
the workplace, but also the operational excellence

While the majority of tea is sold through retail outlets, foodservice volume sales increased at a faster
rate in 2009, 7%, than retail volume sales, 5%. Small independent restaurants, which are present
throughout the country, particularly in rural areas, are the key sellers of foodservice tea.
Small independent restaurants that sell inexpensive food also sell loose tea. These restaurants are
widespread throughout Pakistan and are found in both rural and urban areas. Restaurants that target
middle and upper income groups generally sell packaged/branded tea. Lipton and Tapal are the key
brands which are used by foodservice channels. In addition to retail sales through restaurants, almost
all small and large grocery stores carry packaged tea as one of their main products. There are,
however, speciality tea shops in key areas that sell a large variety of loose tea.
The price of tea per kg increased by 43% to PKR408 in 2009. Black standard tea bags suffered the
highest price increases in 2009, jumping by 46%. Tea prices increased on a global scale in 2009, as a
result of poor harvests in Kenya, Sri Lanka and India, while the situation was exacerbated in Pakistan
due to its rupee losing value against the US dollar.
As Pakistani consumers become increasingly aware of Western trends and lifestyles they have been

Vaccinations And The Prevention Of Infectious Diseases Essay
Kristen DeFlorio Student ID: 22339369 Introduction to Biology, SCI120 Research Project Number
25011100 11/29/2016 VACCINATIONS Throughout history, vaccinations have been used to help the
prevention of infectious diseases; some of which can produce serious illnesses, crippling disabilities,
and ultimately be the cause of death. There is evidence of ancient culture s attempting to treat
transmittable diseases with various forms of inoculations. Developments in the research of
vaccinations increased during the mid twentieth century because of the established of more advanced
laboratories, improved equipment, and new innovations. The progression of medicine during history
has helped further the development of research into vaccinations. Several cultural, ethical, and
religious issues have resulted from the development and use of vaccinations in our society. The topic
of vaccinations has caused a strong debate amongst our culture about the safety and danger of treating
infectious diseases with such methods. Through the understanding of infectious diseases, researchers
have been able to create several types of vaccines to help prevent a variety of life threatening illnesses.
Scientists develop immunizations using different techniques to treat diseases. These types include:
live, killed, toxoids, subunit, and conjugate vaccines. Vaccinations that are the live type use a specific
process which when administered will expose the patient to the actual disease, but in a much

Fascism And Anti Rationalism
Fascism has an anti character it is defined by what it opposes. Discuss.
Fascism as an ideology is opposed to much of what many perceive as belonging in a modern society
such as its anti Semitic, anti race and anti rationalist beliefs. In contrast, fascism is also accustomed to
having many beliefs that it is positive towards such as Ultranationalism, Expansionism and
Corporatism. Therefore, Fascism does have an anti character as it is defined by what it opposes.
Fascism is anti rationalist and counter enlightenment which was a very late nineteenth century policy.
The enlightenment was based on the ideas of universal reason, natural goodness and progress. It was
committed to liberating humans from the darkness of irrationalism and superstition. Friedrich
Nietzsche proposed that humans are motivated by powerful emotions rather than their rational mind
which he called will to power . Many Fascists instead believe in vitalism where organisms gain
characterises from instinct rather than reason. Anti rationalism has influenced fascism in many ways.
Firstly, it gave fascism anti intellectualism reflected in its tendency to go straight into action. For
example, Mussolini s favourite slogans included action not talk and inactivity is death . Secondly, by
abandoning the standard of universal reason fascism placed its faith in history alone. For example,
Mussolini promised to take Italy back to the time of the Roman Empire. While Hitler created a Third
Reich to follow

A Stitch in Time Essay
Quilting has different meanings for different people, but all quilts have a unique appearance and
tradition. What makes art is its life pulsing and shining with the energy and intentions of its creator.
The art of quilting glows with a respect for all generations that have come before putting thread,
needle, and cloth together with vision and love (Wilson 7). Starting out in antiquity as a necessity and
a work of art, quilting has changed over time, but it is still practiced in a myriad of cultures around the
world. Although there are many types of quilting, there are three common types identified as whole
cloth, piecing, and appliqué. The whole cloth technique uses only one piece of white fabric for the top
of the quilt ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the modern word quilt is derived from the Latin word culcitra, it is reasonable to assume that
Romans who spoke Latin used quilted blankets. However, it was not until A.D. 1095 that Europeans
gained undeviating access to the technologies of Asia and Africa, and the process of quilting became
standard in Western Europe. Through their attack on Palestine, knights from England, France, and
Italy were introduced to the Palestinians light armor made of tough quilted jackets covered with chain
mail, flexible armor made of metal links (Wilson 16 17). Quilting was introduced to America when the
first settlers came in the Fifteenth Century. The first records of quilts in what would become the
United States come from wills and estate papers of the 1600 s. The oldest surviving American quilt is
probably the Saltonstall quilt, made around 1704 (Breneman and Laurette). Many cultures have come
together in the United States to include, for example, such world noted quilt styles as Mexican
American, African American, and Amish. It is not known exactly when the first pioneer woman
introduced her quilting to the Spanish American settlers, but star quilt patterns became an element of
Spanish American women s weaving quite early. Fabric became more available in the 1800 s when the
railroad arrived. Women found that they could make warm bed coverings much faster than weaving by
sewing together scraps of fabric with an old blanket, with wool or cotton as filling.

Acute Urbanization And The City Of Mumbai
The year 2010 is estimated to mark the transition of a majority (50.6%) of the world‟s population
from rural to urban. UNPD. (2007) The most alarming implications of rapid urbanization include
irrevocable alteration of local and global environments, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources
and widening social equity gaps within urban areas. With the migration of masses from rural to urban
ares cities are overcrowded and vulnerability and exposure aspects accruing it are in the state of
change. Against this background it is imperative to examine the responses from these urban masses to
the various disasters in the urban areas. One particularly problematic aspect of this challenge is the
selection of appropriate adjustments and adaptations to natural hazards that are exacerbated by
urbanization. The present dissertation seeks to examine the existing approaches to flood hazard risk
reduction in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.Floods are considered the most common and
highly damaging of all hazards, and it has been predicted that they are likely to become more frequent,
more prevalent and more serious in the years to come (Muchtar Bahar 2010) especially in fast
growing cities of the world which are witnessing rapid urbanisation. Compared to other types of
natural disasters, they account for approximately 20 40% of the events which are reported (Sene
2008). Their nature is governed by various factors, which include the properties of the drainage,

Ever since I was a child, I have been drawn to help others less fortunate than myself. Through my
years of volunteer and educational experiences, I have discovered a passion for helping children and
families. These experiences cemented my resolve to help children thrive in a safe, caring, and
nurturing environment. They are the most vulnerable population of people whose rights are often
infringed upon due to their inability to speak up for themselves. Becoming a social worker will put me
in a position to speak up and advocate for these at risk children and ensure that they have the resources
and help they deserve. This degree will allow me to continue my pursuit of social justice by helping

I worked as a teacher s assistant for Intro to Psychology and Developmental Psychology, a Research
Assistant for Neuropsychology, and a Peer Learning Assistant for Spanish. These three jobs taught me
the valuable skill of organization because I had to schedule students to run their experiments, tutor
students, and hold exam reviews. This skill will be very beneficial to me due to the fact that social
workers have very busy schedules and are actively working on several caseloads at once. In addition,
they must make time to travel to houses for home visitations, hospitals, schools, prisons, and courts. I
will utilize my time management skills by delivering treatment plans in a timely fashion, especially if
the cases require immediate attention.
Lastly, my genuine love of learning and curiosity about the world will be a great strength in
completing Denver University s MSW program. Specifically, my studies in the areas of humanities
and social sciences at Gettysburg College strengthened my interest in people and their behavior. I took
many elective courses in Sociology and Psychology because of my desire to learn about people and
curiosity about the world. I am thrilled to be considered for graduate school where I will be able to
continue my education and thirst for knowledge. I am especially excited by the prospect of
concentrating on my passion of helping people. Although I excelled in all my courses, classes that I

During his early life, Conrad didn t show the inspiration and desire to become an author. With novels like Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness, and The Secret Agent, Conrad didn t gain inspiration for them from other novels, but from his seafaring career as a marine merchant. Although Joseph Conrad rise to fame could have been seen as unconventional because of his early life, the legacy that he left behind was nothing less than amazing due to the success of his novels and the influences that they had on other prominent authors in the future. Lord Jim, written in 1900 was a story about an outcast young sailor who came to terms with his pasts act of cowardice, and turned out to become the leader of a small South Seas country. On the other hand, Heart of Darkness, written in 1902, was a novel that described a British man s journey deep into the Congo of Africa. Along his journey, the man would encounters the cruel and mysterious Kurtz. In these two literary pieces, many of signature elements of Conrad s writing can be seen. Faraway settings, dramatic conflicts between human characters and nature, and the themes of individualism are just some of the many different writing style that could have been seen in both literary pieces. Throughout Conrad s story and novel, he was very contempted to show situations that drew parallels between the inner lives of single characters and the broader sweep of human history. In Bolam case, it was discussed that: In an ordinary case it is generally said you judge it by the action of the man in the street. He is the ordinary man. In one case it has been said you judge it by the conduct of the man on the top of a Clapham omnibus. He is the ordinary man. Why the mention of Clapham omnibus ? The Bolam judgment was pronounced in 1957 and Clapham, at that time, was a nondescript south London suburb. It represented ordinary London. Omnibus was used at that time for the public bus. Thus, the man on the top of a Clapham omnibus was a hypothetical person, who was reasonably educated and intelligent but was a non specialist. The courts used to judge the conduct of any defendant by comparing it with that of the hypothetical ordinary man . Investigation Into Real Life Incidents Up until 1968, the idiom, Forensic Linguistics, had not been used, and it is only since then that law enforcement agencies have recognised the importance that is has upon the analysis of statements and of courtroom interaction (Ollson, J. (2008, pg. 3 4.) In the past, the application of linguistics to language, crime and law, involved the enforcement of Judges Rules within the legal system, in which suspects had to dictate their narrative to police officers, then the officer would type it out in their own words, which would often result in invalid statements (Ollson, J, 2008, pg. 3.) However, with forensic linguistics having only recently matured as a method of analysis, it is now customary for investigators to consider these various possible areas within their research, such as authorship comparison and the concept of plagiarism within texts. Therefore, in a world where Forensic Linguistics is used as a form of investigation into real life incidents, it is of upmost importance to underpin its validity. The inclusion of real world case study examples will assist in the overall outcome of the conclusion of this assignment as to whether Forensic Linguistics can be interpreted as a valid form of investigation and if it s expertise is reliable for the judge and jury (Solan, L. Tiersma, P. M, 2002, pg. 221.) Subsequently, this essay will explore the relevant notions of authorship attribution and the use of plagiarism within documents, through the examination of ... Following the collapse of the first Babylonian Dynasty and the so termed golden age of Hammurabi s reign, the Babylonian kingdom eventually stabilised under the influence of the new Kassite Dynasty. The Kassites promptly implemented the Babylonian language as well as Babylonian cultural values and traditions. They introduced the use of stone steles known as kudurrus. The evidence of the use of kudurrus dictates that later dynasties continued the practice until the 7th century BC. Kudurrus are defined and identifiable by their form, imagery and inscriptions. During the study tour it became apparent that many of the objects which I had initially expected to be able to assist me in answering my question were not usable in my report. One of the major obstacles was the design of some exhibitions and displays. Although I found these exhibitions to be innovative and extremely accessible to the public, an unfortunate consequence was that various objects became difficult to properly represent through photography, obscured by magnifying glasses, mirrors and specialised lighting. These factors ultimately led to a minor refocus and a narrowing down of my question to focus on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When Stoker was born, he had two older siblings, and would later get into the habit of living with four younger ones. (Novels for Students 23). During his formative years, he came down with a serious illness, and was confined to his bed for the first seven years of his life. Over the next several years, while he was working on Dracula, Stoker conducted a decent amount of research in order to make his literary masterpiece more authentic. After its publication in 1897, Dracula was generally well received, but it never earned much money within Stoker s lifetime. He failed at his attempts to turn it into a theatre production, and the book was not adapted into successful films until over two decades later. After 1997, life for Stoker and Irving started to go downhill. They lost Lyceum Theatre, and Henry Irving died in 1905. Stoker became gradually lamer and sicker over the years, but he did not concede his writing career. His 1903 novel, The Jewel of Seven Stars, achieved popularity and success. He also wrote The Lady of the Shroud, published in 1903, and Famous Imposters, published in 1910. The Lair of the White Worm was published in 1911 when Stoker was very ill, and hence, this became one of his stranger novels. In the novel, Faulkner sets up the premise for one of the most widely accepted journey plots in literature, and the archetypal themes are carried over into the movie Little Miss Sunshine. Religion In Othello Research Paper This paper presents a New Historicism theoretical framework for considering religion as a force that compels the actions of characters in a piece of literature, as influenced by the society of the time period. Rendering historical pieces from the Church of England, works by Christopher Baker, Harry Morris, Joseph Sterrett, and close reading of Shakespeare s Othello, I show how religion in the form of symbolism and marital duties proves to be a compelling force in Othello s unsuccessful conversion to Christianity. The role of conversion in Shakespeare s Othello proves to be a point of interpretation of numerous scholars. While looking at Othello, it is important to consider the role of religion. Does Christianity influence the actions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The official religion of England had converted from Catholicism to Protestant multiple times during the reign of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Queen Mary I, and Queen Elizabeth I (Buchanan). The Book of Common Prayer was published to establish unity among the people and to provide a consistent religion across the land. Defining what it means to be a Christian is the first crucial step to understanding the leverage that religion has on Othello. The Book of Common Prayer discusses in multiple cases the desire to be without sin and wickedness and contains a morning prayer that specifies O Lord: to keep us this day without sin (18 19). • 13. The Song Structure And Analysis Of Mystery Song 3 At first listen, Mystery Song Three was unlike anything I had ever heard. I knew it was loud, I knew it was aggressive, and that was about it. We were challenged with analyzing a mystery song by defining its structure, basic description, expression, and historical and cultural context. Even without knowing anything about the song, you can find these elements just by listening to it. 2. Song Structure A song s structure can be best described as its organization. I found that Mystery Song Three is a ABABC modified verse chorus form. This means there was five vocal sections with three different types of sections A the verse, B the chorus, C the conclusion. For clarification I have named each of the five vocal sections as follows: vocal section 1 A1, vocal section 2 B1, vocal section 3 A2, vocal section 4 B2, vocal section 5 C. The song began with an instrumental introduction. At first, there was only the cymbals playing but very quickly the texture thickened when guitar and drums came in. These were both aggressive and fast paced. Section A1 was the first verse section of the song. Since this was the first time that the vocalist came in we learned that the vocalist was male with a rough sound and midrange voice. The instrumentation of this section featured a repeating guitar riff and drum sounds. Overall, this section had an angry sound emphasized with swear words and angry lyrics, had a heavy texture created by the guitar and drums, and had a fast tempo. This section was then followed by an instrumental section to create a transition from A1 to B1. Section B1 was the first chorus. This section also featured a fast tempo, aggressive guitar part, and percussion. However, this section had slower vocals than A1. Additionally, new vocal techniques were used such as blues influenced slides on the lyric No . Also the rhythm changed which emphasized the lyric burnt in to my skin to further relate the anger in the song. After another instrumental break, A2 verse began. The melody of A1 repeats with a very similar instrumental part. However, the lyrics from A1 are different, and a No shout is added differing more from A1. This further communicates and anger and frustration expression in the song. Following an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the late 1800 s people like Thomas Edison have been buying up patents in communication technology, forming monopolies, leading to a non competitive entertainment industry. With only a handful of corporations controlling all aspects of acquisition, distribution and marketing of music, harsh business principles create an exploitative industry that takes the best of what artists have to offer and leaves many of them unable to support themselves. Beginning in the 1950 s with payola and white cover music and ultimately evolving into iTunes and Spotify, the music industry has grown into a billion dollar industry with far reaching influence and control. Contracts rarely serve the artists best interest and many are left out to dry when their usefulness has expired. In the 1950 s, radio was struggling to keep ratings against the emerging new television craze. Music executives began to pay disk jockeys to play their music. • 30. Fascism And Anti Rationalism Fascism has an anti character it is defined by what it opposes. Discuss. Fascism as an ideology is opposed to much of what many perceive as belonging in a modern society such as its anti Semitic, anti race and anti rationalist beliefs. In contrast, fascism is also accustomed to having many beliefs that it is positive towards such as Ultranationalism, Expansionism and Corporatism. Therefore, Fascism does have an anti character as it is defined by what it opposes. Fascism is anti rationalist and counter enlightenment which was a very late nineteenth century policy. The enlightenment was based on the ideas of universal reason, natural goodness and progress. It was committed to liberating humans from the darkness of irrationalism and superstition. However, it was not until A.D. 1095 that Europeans gained undeviating access to the technologies of Asia and Africa, and the process of quilting became standard in Western Europe. Through their attack on Palestine, knights from England, France, and Italy were introduced to the Palestinians light armor made of tough quilted jackets covered with chain mail, flexible armor made of metal links (Wilson 16 17). Quilting was introduced to America when the first settlers came in the Fifteenth Century. The first records of quilts in what would become the United States come from wills and estate papers of the 1600 s. The oldest surviving American quilt is probably the Saltonstall quilt, made around 1704 (Breneman and Laurette). Many cultures have come together in the United States to include, for example, such world noted quilt styles as Mexican American, African American, and Amish. It is not known exactly when the first pioneer woman introduced her quilting to the Spanish American settlers, but star quilt patterns became an element of Spanish American women s weaving quite early. Fabric became more available in the 1800 s when the railroad arrived. Women found that they could make warm bed coverings much faster than weaving by sewing together scraps of fabric with an old blanket, with wool or cotton as filling. ...
