While I coached various different contests that season, Ryan Henne who competed in Junior
High Public Speaking, stood out among the rest. On the first day that I watched Ryan give his
speech for the first time, I saw my 7th grade self within him. He was monotone and passive in
the delivery of his speech, even though he d known the content like the back of his hand. Over
the course of the next few months, I had the opportunity to teach Ryan some of the same
speaking techniques I learned from Parliamentary Procedure years prior. Though it took some
work, by the time regionals came in February, he exuded confidence and passion. As he walked
