Hurricane Maand Case Study
Good afternoon CEO Mr. Arne M. Sorenson, Due to recent Hurricane Irma and impending
Hurricane Maria, it is of increased importance that Marriott International concentrates on its
operations in the Caribbean. In some areas, Hurricane Irma s 185 mile per hour winds resulted in
devastation that will remain for years. The U.S Virgin Islands, home of the Frenchman s Reef
Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort, suffered tremendously. This Marriott Beach Resort is now
waiving hotel cancellations and changing fees for certain arrival dates. To make matters worse,
Caribbean islands are now preparing for a direct hit by Hurricane Maria, this month s second
Category 5 storm that is expected to arrive this Tuesday and Wednesday. Warnings for this

Regional managers can identify which aspects of their hotels are the most vulnerable and explain to
executives the most effective aid. They can also report their employees most important concerns
and needs. Corporate executives can then decide the most beneficial ways to help as well as the
sufficient reallocation of company resources. Managers and executives should also establish a
recovery timeline. Creating a timeline helps ensure that recovery progress is on track in order to
allow operations to resume as quickly as possible. Additionally, this meeting can clarify a practical
communication system; executives and managers can establish communication procedures not only
between themselves but all staff. Such protocols secure adequate correspondence between the
regional and corporate branches as well as proper alert of specific storm updates to all staff.
Furthermore, it strengthens communication from staff to corporate offices, allowing for sufficient
notification of staff safety. Location of insurance policies, financial records, and other important
documents should also be identified during this meeting; not only will valuables be protected from
getting lost, the recovery plan can be implemented more smoothly since all necessary information
will be readily available post hurricane. Furthermore, executives and managers must determine a
proper budget for facility maintenance,

Summary Of Sigmund Freud s Totem And Taboo
In the book, Totem and Taboo by Sigmund Freud, Freud focuses on the commonly acknowledged
cultural taboo against incest and studies how it structures primitive societies. He speculates on his
concept of the Oedipal Complex and how it affects society as a whole. He wishes to establish a
connection between the Oedipal Complex and the phenomenon of conscience, which involves the
sense of a moral code governing our lives and our sense of guilt. In order to establish this
connection, Freud discusses ambivalence, our belief in the omnipotence of our thoughts, and
animal phobias and sacrificial rituals in order to make a sound, reasonable argument. Freud begins
his book by comparing the psychological development between primitives, savages, and... Show

The male tribe members went to long measures to prevent incest, like hiding in bushes or running
away from the female family member. Freud focuses on this idea of repressed incestuous desires
that one innate has and has to constantly fight against, in order to fit in society. Freud deems this
idea of incest and the killing of the totem animal as taboo, which is this idea of something being
both clean/sacred and unclean/forbidden at the same time. Taboo is a prohibition forced upon
people directed towards an internal, powerful desire that people want, but must avoid at all costs.
The desire to violate this prohibition is deep in their unconscious. Freud acknowledges this internal
desire and believes that: the persistence of the taboo, namely that the original desire to do the
prohibited thing must also still persist among the tribes concerned. They must therefore have an
ambivalent attitude towards their taboos. In their unconscious there is nothing they would like
more than to violate them, but they are afraid to do so and the fear is stronger than the desire. The
desire is unconscious, however, in every individual member of the tribe just as it is in neurotics
(Freud 40). These people begin to have an ambivalent and guilty attitude towards what the taboo is
actually inhibiting. They secretly, internally, unconsciously, love the idea of the prohibited act but
ultimately feel guilty if they violate the tribal laws. This ambivalence

Relationships Between Western And Western Culture
Intertextual relationships between texts exist to influence a reader s perception and add layers of
depth to the texts meanings resulting in a heightened experience and a more significant
comprehension of the texts ideas. Detecting such intertextual relationships between two wildly
different texts; Walt Disney s 1994 animated musical epic, The Lion King, and Studio Gainax s
2007 animated mecha television series, Gurren Lagann, has enriched my understanding of the
differences between the texts representation on the cultural issues of the bildungsroman genre
(coming of age story). Despite the inherent differences between the two texts, originating from
different countries, identifying the similarities, differences and changes in cultural... Show more

Both the two texts follow the The Hero s Journey story structure (also known as a monomyth),
featuring the distinct departure, initiation and return phases and many of the twelve steps
associated, thereby establishing an intertextual link. Both main characters embark on a journey,
witness the death of a significant role model, mature as they encounter various trials and triumph
over their enemies, transforming into adults throughout the process. The Lion King s story of
Simba s rise to succeed his father as king reflects western attitudes towards growing up and how
maturing from a child into an adult is perceived: meeting the expectations of family and society, and
accepting the responsibilities associated with adulthood. Unlike The Lion King where the film ends
when the protagonist, Simba, has matured into an adult, Gurren Lagann follows its protagonist,
Simon, throughout his entire life detailing phases of growth a person experiences. Following his
story well beyond having matured into an adult, the show proceeds beyond his first major victory
and shows his struggles against an unideal future. This continuation and expansion of the story
beyond adulthood represents the eastern cultural attitude towards growing up that suggests a person
s growth doesn t end at adulthood but

The Novel -victor Frankenstein
The world to me was a secret, which I desired to discover; to her it was a vacancy, which she
sought to people with imaginations of her own. Victor Frankenstein
Victor Frankenstein was and had always been a curious boy and intelligent boy. His childhood
consisted of revealing and investigating facts about the world that he lives in. This undoubtedly
led to his desire to explore and take part in adventures including his journey to the North Pole
later on in his life. The quote itself however, has several interpretations. The first part explains that
the world had so much to uncover, to reveal about itself. To Victor, he thought that it was a secret
land that was yet to be discovered and possessed so many secrets that were left to be unveiled to
the public eye. At birth, his curiosity lingered throughout not just childhood but also carried into his
adult life. His curiosity was his excuse that he created to take the blame for his actions. He was
curious about nature, and also about the fact that his father insisted on him not pursuing a career in
chemistry. His insistence to find the truth soon led to the demise of many of his loved ones through
the creation of Frankenstein, the monster he created because he was inclined to know about nature
and chemistry. On the other hand, Elizabeth was not curious. She viewed the world as a vacant,
blank canvas that people sought to fill with the imaginations and rather, aspirations of others as well
as her. This shows the extreme

Mark Reed Is one of my classmates that sit in my general area, when we decided that we were
going to be partners.None of us had an idea of each others family s traditions . But as we began
to talk about our family s we realized we had something in common and that was that most the
family we have are in homeport of New York City or Long Island, New York. After we had about
ten minutes or so to get to know each other, came the assignment of making the questions up for
each other. So the question that we both came up with were very vague and general. As a result,
the answers that we had both given each other were general and vague. Like most families ,
Marks was one of the many families that go back to New York. Now Mark was born in Washington
D.C. but raised In Annapolis, Maryland. His most important familytradition in the Reed house is
Christmas. When they travel to the big apple New York City, particularly Brooklyn, around the

St. Thomas Aquinas Cosmological Argument
Catholic Church:
St. Thomas Aquinas (Cosmological Argument)
In St. Thomas Aquinas s cosmological argument claims the following that the universe exist and its
very existence has a cause and that cause is God. In his unfinished book Summa Theologiae,
Aquinas put forward five ways for the existence of God.
His first way is the argument from motion and by studying the works of Aristotle, the Greek
Philosopher, he concluded from common observation that the planets, rolling stone or any object
that is in motion is put in motion by other forces or object. From this theory, Aquinas believes there
must have been an unmoved mover which is God who sets things in motion. It is certain and
evident that in the world some things are set in motion. Whatever is in motion is put in motion by
another. Therefore, by which it is put in motion must also be put in motion by another and by
another again but this cannot go for infinity because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The final way that St. Thomas Aquinas speaks of has to do with the universe and the order of
nature. Aquinas states that common sense tells us that the universe works in such a way, that one
can conclude that it was designed by an intelligent designer. In other words, all physical laws and
the order of nature and life were designed and ordered by God. Because whatever lacks in
intelligence cannot move towards an end, unless it be directed by some being with knowledge and
intelligence. Some intelligent being exists by whom all natural things are directed to their end, and
this being we call God. This argument by Aquinas is suggesting that inanimate objects such as the
planets could not have placed themselves into the orbits they have, because they lack the
intelligence to do so. Yet they are aligned so perfectly, this must mean it must have been done so by
a being with the intelligence to do so. Although we humans are intelligent, we cannot move planets,
so that leaves us with

Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Easily the most well known natural World Heritage Site in Australia, the Great Barrier Reef,
which is the world s most extensive coral reef ecosystem, was inscribed with UNESCO in 1981.
The site covers approximately 348,000 square kilometers and includes a wide range of depths,
comprising of shallow inshore, mid shelf, and even extending into oceanic waters 2,000 meters
deep. The Great Barrier Reef is actually made up of around 2,500 individual reefs, encompassing
some 400 different species of coral, which makes for some of the most remarkable underwater
scenery in the world. The massive size and varying depths allows for a wide array of ecological
habitats and species, making the reef one of the most complex ecosystems on the planet. ... Show

How Does Poe Create Tension In The Cask Of Amontillado
In The Cask of Amontillado, Poe uses the aspect of time as an element of tension and
foreshadowing to the story. The selection of time and place also plays an important role in the
story. The carnival gives Montresor a perfect opportunity to appear in disguise, to locate his
intoxicated companion and lure him into his vindictive trap. Carnivalis a time of happiness and
celebration for everyone, but in this tale, it is a time for revenge and death because by the end,
Fortunato is in precisely the opposite of a carnival atmosphere (Reynolds 105). Montresor states
that it is about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season (Poe 217)
when he first encounters Fortunato. Given that the readers are already aware of Montresor s

Essay on Racism in American History X
American History X is clearly a film dealing with racism. The interesting thing about this film is
the way in which the subject is treated. First of all, it is obvious that, though racism is always a
difficult subject to deal with, American History X presents it without any reservations or dumming
down. Second, the film s figurehead for racism, Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), is not an
unintelligent redneck racist as films often portray them, but is in fact well spoken, charismatic and
intelligent, although he clearly holds ideals that are terribly wrong. Finally, the film shows that it is
not just the white, neo nazi racists who are fools to be involved in this, but all racism is foolish.
Through these methods, the film shows the viewer,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Derek s time in prison shows the results of this terrible way of life, and from the moment he
takes off his shirt in the outdoor workout area, revealing his huge swastika tattoo to the other neo
nazi inmates, he becomes involved in another horrible situation, resulting in his being raped in the
showers when things go wrong. Perhaps the most tragic scene of the film is also its most
effective in delivering to the audience, the emotional destruction that racism can cause. When
Danny at the end of the film is shot repeatedly by a black student he had previously pissed off,
Derek runs into the school, finds his brother dead, and his life and the lives of his family are
changed forever.
What makes Derek such a powerful and frightening character is not the fact that he is racist, it is the
fact that instead of choosing a somewhat regular, backwoods, unintelligent racist as the films
central character, Derek is well spoken and bright. It is these qualities that allow him to recruit the
youths of Venice Beach and form, with the help of his mentor Cameron Alexander, the entire white
supremacist culture permeating the area. Instead of just telling them to hate black, hispanic, asian
people because they are of that race, he makes speeches, telling them charismatically and
passionately how these people are stealing their jobs, causing Americans to suffer a poor standard
of living. He tells them America needs to take care of Americans

Planning And Implementing Curriculum Accommodation
Planning and implementing curriculum accommodation in content areas Many students with LD
experience trouble with reading abilities that are significantly below grade level. Consequently, the
high school text book in history and other social studies classes will represent a problem. If students
have problems with interpreting what is seen, they may have difficulties with timelines, graphs,
maps, charts and other visual display that frequently used to explain information in social studies.
Steele (2007) demonstrated that modification can be implemented to help students with learning
difficulties succeed in social studies. Textbooks are usually hard for students with learning
difficulties, it is better to utilize supplementary readingmaterial, for example, historical fiction,
easier textbookand resources from the internet. For instance, websites that have many timelines and
clear description of historical events, newspapers can contain information that related to social
studies topics to students lives and communities, establish readingabilities, boost critical thinking
skills and integrate concepts across social studies topics.
These resources might explain topics, themes, and abstract ideas that are too hard to understand in
the textbooks (Steele, 2007). To make students with learning problems more successful, the teacher
can provide lesson about a particular book, discuss part of the textbook like glossary sections,
appendixes, chapters heading, maps questions,

American Born Chinese Theme Essay
When writing a novel, whether it is purposely or unconsciously, every author would create a theme
that would help deliver out the message that they want to send out. Because novels are made of
different situations and experiences, there can be many kinds of themes in it. However, there is
usually a main theme that is consider as the most important theme since it is the main message that
the author wants to send out to readers. Therefore, while readers can choose whichever one of
themes as the most important theme depending on the question and the understanding of the novel,
the main theme will still be the theme that leads the story from the beginning to the ending. In the

example is when Jin Wang refused to be friends with Wei Chen and grouped himself with the

Red # 40 Dyes
In the United States and in most of the world food dyes are exceedingly common. In addition to
this, they have been brought into question as being dangerous for human and environmental health.
From general observation and knowledge about this topic I knew that Red #40 dye (Allura Red
AC) is at the height of this controversy. After some initial research, I discovered more information
on Azo dyes, their effect on the environment, as well as wastewater treatment used to decontaminate
water containing these dyes. This led to my interest on the topic of Electrochemical Advanced
Oxidation Processes (EAOPs) as a fairly recent solution to environmental issues regarding
contaminants in water. I was curious to see how these processes work, as well as... Show more

This is largely because they are relatively cheap and simple to manufacture. Furthermore, they
produce vibrant shades of color and are reasonably soluble in water (Liu, Wan, Nan, n.d.).
However, these dyes are now manufactured at such a large scale that they bring up numerous
health and environmental concerns. In recent years azo dyes, especially Allura Red AC, have
been connected to child hyperactivity, which also raises concerns over other potentially toxic
effects they can have on living organisms ( FDA Probes Link , 2011). This is only amplified by
the fact that azo dyes such as Allura Red AC and Azo Grenadine are also especially recalcitrant to
conventional methods of wastewater treatment. Research on this topic led me to an article on
electrochemical advanced oxidation processes and their potential as a solution to mineralizing
especially recalcitrant compounds in the environment, Decontamination of Wastewaters
Containing Synthetic Organic Dyes by Electrochemical Methods: A Review. This led me to
pursue the investigation in my extended essay on the topic of electrochemical advanced
oxidation processes and the effect they have on azo dyes such as Allura Red AC and Azo
Grenadine. In order to evaluate the effect of this process, I made the decision to do a comparison
of the two dyes. This led me to the question, How does the effect of electrochemical advanced

Chronic Myeloid Leukemia
Regarding our recent inquiry as to the viability of an Abl Bcr inhibitor and the marketability
thereof, it is of prudent management to discern the separation between our drug candidate and those
drugs currently existing in the market, and evaluating the ease of development as well as long term
payoffs of said inhibitor. First, however, an introduction to chronic myeloid leukemia, its symptoms
and diagnoses, as well as current treatments, is in order. In better understanding the disease, we can
more properly evaluate our proposed treatment.

If the patient is required to take more doses with CSU 001, but to only pay the same relative
amount, then each of those doses would have to individually cost less than Gleevec. Thus, if the
individual cost to the patient is less, it would in turn lead us to require that the individual cost of

per dose of CSU 001 is less than Gleevec in proportion to the number of doses taken, then there
should be no discrepancy between development and marketing via the dosage required.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Professionss For Women By Virginia...
Virginia Woolf is a famous novelist, critic, and essayist. She is most known for her novels such as:
Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, The Common Reader, and several more. These novels are both
fiction and nonfiction, and include compelling psychological insight. Professions for Women is
another one of her famous works, and it is the shortened version of a speech that Virginia Woolf
gave on January 21, 1931 to the Women s Service League. In this speech, Woolf conveyed her
message about women in the professional world through the use of multiple rhetorical strategies.
These strategies include her use of understatements, a variety of tones throughout the speech, and
the inclusion of differing sentence structures involving both short sentences and complex sentences.
Overall, Woolf has a strong belief that women should be free to work in the professional world, and
she conveys this quite well through the use of these strategies. To begin, at the start of this speech
Woolf utilized various understatements about herself, and when combined they both contributed
vastly to helping Woolf convey her message. For example, in the first paragraph, Woolf poses a
rhetorical questionthat states, It is true I am a woman; it is true I am employed; but what
professional experiences have I had? Woolf is considered to be one of the most significant
modernists of her century, yet in this question, she seems to believe that she is not worthy of giving
this speech. This helps to convey her message because to the audience, Woolf seems more like a
peer than a superior figure. By making herself seem more like a peer, Woolf has effectively made
herself more trustworthy and relatable to the audience. Continuing, in the second paragraph, Woolf
makes yet another understatement of herself by stating, But to tell you my story it is a simple one.
Considering that Woolf is one of the most valuable modernists of her century, she is anything but
simple. Yet by making this statement to the audience, she is allowing them insight into her
personality and what she thinks of herself. Through this statement, Woolf has proved her humility
and that she views herself as just another human being. The first understatement allowed her to be

Parthenon Marbles Research Paper
The acquisition of the Parthenon marbles by the British museum has been a controversial topic for
many years. The Parthenon marbles (commonly known as the Elgin marbles ) concerns the set of
stone sculptures and archaeological features which were procured by Lord Elgin and imparted to
the British museum in 1816. Although the British endorse the legality of the subtraction of the

A Violent Society Causes Domestic Violence Essay
People who are close to one another need to trust each other. We should trust our parents not to
hurt us, and to give us what we need to grow. When someone is abused, the trust is broken.
Domestic violence is the use of physical force within a home in any form of abuse. Abuse can be
a whole range of physical behaviour, slapping, hitting, beating, or using weapons to hurt someone.
It includes verbal and emotional abuse, where someone is constantly insulted and made to feel sad
and worthless. It can also include rape and sexual abuse. Sexual abuse is when someone forces
another to have sexual intercourse or do other sexual things against their will. Another form of
abuse is total control where one adult makes all the decisions for another... Show more content on

Widespread belief that women were intellectually inferior to men led most societies to limit women
s education to learning domestic skills. Well educated, upper class men controlled most positions of
employment and power in society. Traditionally, female family members existed only in terms of
their relationships to men. As daughters, subject to the control and whim of fathers, women
represented a means of economic or political gain through marital arrangements. As wives, they
became their husbands property, and symbols of power and status. Violence against women served
to coerce their acquiescence in this scheme and perpetuate subservience to male relatives. Legally
permitted abuse of women continued to exist in many Western cultures until the late nineteenth
century. Early Roman societies deemed a wife the property of her husband and therefore subject
to his control. According to early Roman law, a man could beat, divorce, or murder his wife for
offenses committed by her which belittled his honour or threatened his property rights. Roman
society considered enforcement of such rights of control essentially a private matter, and thus
failed to subject the husband to either public scrutiny or disapproval. Both the Old and New
Testament attest to the belief in early teachings in the obedience of women. Indeed, Eve s creation
from the rib of Adam provided an excuse for

Some of their ideas are that the government should give a full time doctor and medical facility to
the disposal of the tribe, also to provide them work within the plant and a paycheck every week.
Another option is to lay down roads that connect the region to the mainland and then provide
permanent housing for all members of the tribe. Unfortunately, many African governments are
known for being unfair and uncivilized, and even corrupt, so how are we to know that they
Kiyuku tribe would ever see any of the money or other benefits they are being offered? What is to
say they don t keep the money for themselves and give away the housing and medical to other

leaders are fully aware of the ramifications tied to the plans that Colney and Pitts are offering them.
For thousands of years this tribe has thrived in this land, without the need for money, doctor

The Rate Of Teen Pregnancy
Now, about 15 million girls under the age of 20 in the world have a child each year. Guesses (of a
number) are that 20 60% of these pregnancies in developing countries are mistimed or unwanted. In
the United States, the percent of teenage pregnancies that are unintended is guessed (number) at
78%. The rates of teen pregnancyare not equal across (communities of people). Rates of teen
pregnancy change/differ by a factor of almost 10 from as low as 12 pregnancies per year per
1,000 teens in the Netherlands to rates of more than 100 teens per year per 1,000 in the Russian
Federation. The rates of women having a child before age 20 are higher in the United States
compared to almost the same countries. For example, 22% of women report having a child
before age 20 in the United States, compared to 15% in Great Britain and 11% in Canada. These
differences are even greater when comparing (numbers of babies born per 1000 people per year)
among younger teenagers. When one controls for poorness and (family and cultural characteristics),
some, but not all, of this difference disappears.

populated ships visiting ports in the Bahamas. More so, the problem being that these cruise ships
are bringing thousands of visitors weekly, yet are failing to support port destinations economically
which leaves the port locals and entrepreneurs suffering. Specifically this paper will look into the
cause of the issue, which is mostly the cruise ships and management teams of the cruise companies.
Further, this paper will explore the solution to how these cruise companies can better support the
port communities and aiding to the local environment. More so, having the ships promote and

democratic system under Athenian influence they changed over to 12 tribes. It is highly
probable that they submitted their candidates for offices from these tribes. In order to become a

probably say that without trepidation that Chuck Close is our David.
Close had to overcome many obstacles to reach his success. He had to deal with many disabilities
and a life threatening stroke that almost killed him, but instead he used those obstacles in his life
as a motivation to accomplish his goals both as an artist and individual. Although I was somehow
familiar with the artist I had never read anything in length about him. I decided to make a

Abstract
During this experiment, the researcher would chemically lighten hair using hydrogen peroxide and

time, 10, 20, and 40 minutes. Once the hair was removed from the lightening solution it will be

According to Olsen (2014), the purpose of the experiment was to determine whether the chemical

Bugs Bunny Commercial Analysis
Imagine audiences sitting in the movie theater trying to escape from the looming hardships of
World War II. They sit and watch as the commercials begin to play when one of the most familiar
tunes in animation begins. The commercial presents itself deceptively using the classic Looney
Tunes curtain opening and theme music with the simple title of Bugs Bunny. The only hint at the
true purpose of advertising at this point is the producer listing of the U.S. Treasury Dept.
Defense Savings Staff. The curtains quickly open with an approaching Bugs Bunny miming the
fife with his carrot as The Girl I Left Behind plays in the background. This is all set against a
redrawing of the classic American painting The Spirit of 76. Bugs Bunny then begins to eat the
carrot he s been holding, when he suddenly begins the song Any Bonds Today? . Suddenly, the
purpose of the commercial is finally revealed to the audience, with Bugs song telling people to
buy war bonds. All throughout this he gestures, points and moves with an animated flair for the
audience. He even exits and reenters frame with an Uncle Sam costume, eventually beginning to
act like he s passing out bonds to the audience. Until, with an animated twirl Bugs Bunny appears
with blackface and a different singing voice, a parody of the blackface performance Al Jolson
did in the movie The Jazz Singer. Finally, the picture pulls in close on Bugs face as he wipes
away the paint and once the picture pulls back out the backdrop has changed. It shows a combat
scene full of planes and ships as Elmer Fuddand Porky Pigappear to help close the advertisement
with singing and dancing. As the song ends a simple war bonds ad pulls into frame. It now
presents a Minuteman on the left and texts that reads For Defense Buy United States Savings
Bonds and Stamps. The commercial relies heavily on its ethos and pathos to convince the audience
into buying war bonds, using very little logos.
Furthermore, ethos is used by the commercial with the use of Bugs Bunny as the appeal for the
audience. At this time in American history Bugs Bunny was one the most famous animated
characters often considered fun for the whole family. Also with most fathers gone off to fight in the

Include geological ages where possible. (Once again remember to record reliable sources on page

The Undara lava tubes were formed 190,000 years ago in the Cainozoic period due to large
volcanic activity. In this time, Mount Undara had a volcanic eruption that spewed molten lava onto
the surrounding landscape. The lava reached 90km North and 160km north west of the volcano. An
estimated 23.3 km3 of lava flowed from the volcano at a rate of about 1000 m3 every second.
(Nprsr.qld.gov.au, 2015) The lava that exited the volcano reached extreme temperatures of
1200В°C, therefore destroying anything that got in it s way. The lava tubes were then formed as
the top outer layer cooled and formed a crust while the molten lava below drained outwards
leaving behind a series of hollow tubes. (Austhrutime.com, 2015) Caves however, have formed
due to weaker lava tubes collapsing and creating depressions. The craters seen in Undara have
formed from chunks of molten rock imploding the surface of the Earth due to explosions from the
Mt Undara volcano. Some of the animals that were on the earth at this time included the sabre
tooth tiger, cave bears, woolly mammoths and woolly rhinoceros. At this time, plants had a time to
flourish since the extinction of the dinosaurs. Nearly every plant living today had its roots in the
Cainozoic Era. (LiveScience.com, 2015) The same type of plants that are present around the lava

Enlightenment Attitudes Towards Religion Essay
Enlightenment Attitudes Towards Religion
Scientific and philosophical innovations during the 18th century brought about a new breed of
thinkers. Their driving forces of rational and reason shifted the religious temperament of the elite
from enthusiasts to intellectuals. They argued that there was no divine standard of morality, no
afterlife to divert humanity from worldly concerns (The Western Experience, pg. 657). They were
radicals who sought to displace the authority of religion. Driven by reason, enlightenment thinkers
naturally opposed superstition and attempted to replace religious mysticism with philosophical

660). Dennis Diderot echoes this sentiment in his encyclopedic definition of the term irreligious
stating that morality is the universal law that the finger of God has engraved on all our hearts,
and that consequently we should not confuse immortality and irreligion. Mortality can exist
without religion; and religion, perhaps, even exits frequently with immortality (Course Pak,
Chapter 2, pg. 157). Further Diderot sites the Fathers of a council of Toledo in his definition of
intolerance where they state do no violence of any kind to people in order to lead them back to
faith, for God is merciful or severe to whomever he chooses (Course Pak, Chapter 2, pg. 156). By
siting the fathers, Diderot masterfully escapes censorship while fighting the churches belligerence
with its own words. Catholic Habsurg emperor Joseph II championed the philosophy of tolerance
in 1781 in the Edict of Toleration. The Edict granted Jews and Catholics the same religious and
civil rights, this was the first time such an act was condoned by a Catholic Habsburg ruler. In
addition it also tried to limit the power of the Catholic Church by ordering the dissolution of
numerous monasteries which were useless and corrupt. (The Western Experience, pg. 660). While
tolerance proved to be an important concept of the enlightenment, deism was indeed the primary
religious doctrine. Voltaire, one of the Enlightenment s most prolific writers was an

Winston Churchill and His Leadership During World War II...
Winston Churchill and His Leadership During World War II Winston Churchill symbolized
Britain during World War II. His image, and that of the British people as a whole, was one of
defiance in the face of overwhelming adversity. His galvanizing and courageous leadership as
Prime Minister of Britain during World War II was the catalyst for the stubborn resistance of the
British and the ultimate victory of the Allied forces over Hitler. His speeches stirred the masses and
mobilized the British. When everything continued to go wrong, when things could seemingly get
no worse, he was there to encourage and give support to the Allied armies. With his inspiring
speeches, he motivated the nation of Great... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He loved the school and his classes, so he studied hard. He graduated in 1885, with honors, 20th
in his class of 130. (Webb 15 19) Churchill s active war experiences are limited to being in the
midst of a rebellion in Cuba, serving with the Malakand Field Force in India from 1896 97, and
serving in the cavalry during the reconquest of Sudan, Egypt. (Gilbert 17) After Churchill s
tenure in India, he ran for a seat in Parliament. He spoke well, but the opposition he faced was
just too strong. He lost his first try at an electoral office. Churchill ran for political office many
times after this initial failure. In 1901, he won a seat in the House of Commons. From 1908
1939, he held many political offices. Some include: First Lord of the Admiralty, Minister of
Munitions, Secretary for War and Air, and Chancellor of the Exchequer. All of these positions pale
when held in comparison to his service as Prime Minister. He held this position twice during his
life: once during World War II from 1940 1945, and again from 1951 1955. (Bra*censored*,
Internet) In 1938, Adolf Hitler of Germany annexed Austria to the Greater German Reich
Groszdentschland. His forces were continuing to move, and before long, they would begin pushing
westward. (Braakhius, Internet) The Prime Minister of Britain at this time was Neville
Chamberlain. He met with Hitler, and Hitler promised him that he had would not further extend
Germany s holdings.

Inspired By Van Gogh
This painting was inspired by Van Gogh numerous paintings of flowers (usually sunflower) in
vases. This piece was made in a face to face art class, where one of my first projects was a to
paint a piece modeled after any work from an artist of my choice. Flowers are something I have
always drawn or painted, usually my go to, so this seemed like an obvious choice for me.
Unfortunately, I am unable to find the original painting I was examining for my project, but Van
Gogh had many pieces under that particular style. That being said, I started with a standard pencil
to do the sketching as usual. Later when it came to painting, we diluted the paint with oil and used
a mixing spatula too. Over the entire course of creating the piece, I was adding

The History of Smallpox and How It Became Eradicated Essay
Smallpox is an ancient and very deadly disease. Scientists think that smallpox first started around
10,000 B.C. in Africa. They also think that it spread from Africa to India by Egyptian merchants.
Scientists have studied the mummy of the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses V., who died in 1156 B.C.,
and they think that he had smallpox. Smallpox was also known to be in China in 1122 B.C. There
are also writings from India around that same time that mention smallpox. Smallpox is the only
disease to ever be eradicated, which means it is no longer around. The last person to have it was
in Somalia in 1977. Smallpox first appeared in Europe between the 5th and 7th centuries and was
common in the Middle Ages. There was an epidemic of smallpox around the... Show more content

Andrew Jackson got it when he was 14, while he was a British prisoner during the American
Revolution. His brother was a prisoner with him and died from smallpox. Abraham Lincoln got
sick right after he gave his famous speech, The Gettysburg Address. He was sick for almost four
weeks and survived, but one of his servants did not. Smallpox is caused by the variola virus. It is
in the family of viruses called Poxviridae. There are two kinds of variola virus, variola major and
variola minus. Variola major is much more severe than variola minor and kills about 30% of
people who are infected. Variola minor kills between 1 and 5% of those infected. Smallpox does
not infect any animals except humans and people or animals cannot just carry the disease.
Smallpox is spread by face to face contract. It can also be spread through the bed sheets and
clothes of people who have the disease. The symptoms of smallpox start about two weeks after
people get the virus, with a fever and feeling of low energy. People also have headaches, sore
throats, flu symptoms, and start throwing up. After a few days, a rash that is raised above the
skin begins. People also get sores inside the mouth, throat, and nose. After a person has had
smallpox for about three weeks, scabs form and then begin to fall off. A person is contagious from
the time the fever starts until the last scab falls off. People do not spread the disease at school or

Prison Litigation Reform Act Case Analysis
The influx of inmates in the late 1970s through 1980s led to unsustainable prions condition that
violated inmate s rights granted by the Eight Amendment. As the budgets were being exhausted,
transpired the issues of inmate s poor medical treatment, abusive physical security, and unsuitable
physical conditions (Newman and Scott 2013, 547). In the 1976 case of Estelle v. Gamble, the
Supreme Court of the United Statesestablished that an inmate s Eighth Amendment rights were
violated if prisonpersonnel demonstrated deliberate indifference to a prisoner s serious illness or
injury (Newsman and Scott 2012, 548). The increased volume of filed lawsuits led to the passing of
the Prison Litigation Reform Act, which targeted frivolous lawsuits by limiting waivers for the
requirement that inmates pay filing fees,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the mandated reductions, the prison inmate s population would still be 137.5 % over its
allowed capacity (Liptak 2014). In opposition, the State of California submitted an appeal for the
federal order to the Supreme Court seeking protections under the Prison Litigation Reform Act
(Newsman and Scott 2012). In 2011, the Supreme Court 5 4 decision upheld three judge panel s
federal order requiring California state prisons to reduce its population by 30,000 inmates (Liptak
2014).The Supreme Court judges emphasized the notion that overcrowding inflicted pain on
prisoners, and, therefore, violated inmate s constitutional rights (Newsman and Scott 2012). After
the Supreme Court s decision, Jerry Brown advocated realignment in the state prisons that would
transfer non violent, non serous, and non sexual offenders to county jails (Ravi 2014). Likewise, to
comply with the federal order Brown allocated 6 billion in state funds to be transferred to counties
aiding the realignment reforms (Ravi

Sorenson, Due to recent Hurricane Irma and impending Hurricane Maria, it is of increased importance that Marriott International concentrates on its operations in the Caribbean. In some areas, Hurricane Irma s 185 mile per hour winds resulted in devastation that will remain for years. The U.S Virgin Islands, home of the Frenchman s Reef Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort, suffered tremendously. This Marriott Beach Resort is now waiving hotel cancellations and changing fees for certain arrival dates. To make matters worse, Caribbean islands are now preparing for a direct hit by Hurricane Maria, this month s second Category 5 storm that is expected to arrive this Tuesday and Wednesday. Creating a timeline helps ensure that recovery progress is on track in order to allow operations to resume as quickly as possible. Additionally, this meeting can clarify a practical communication system; executives and managers can establish communication procedures not only between themselves but all staff. Such protocols secure adequate correspondence between the regional and corporate branches as well as proper alert of specific storm updates to all staff. Furthermore, it strengthens communication from staff to corporate offices, allowing for sufficient notification of staff safety. Location of insurance policies, financial records, and other important documents should also be identified during this meeting; not only will valuables be protected from getting lost, the recovery plan can be implemented more smoothly since all necessary information will be readily available post hurricane. • 3. Summary Of Sigmund Freud s Totem And Taboo In the book, Totem and Taboo by Sigmund Freud, Freud focuses on the commonly acknowledged cultural taboo against incest and studies how it structures primitive societies. He speculates on his concept of the Oedipal Complex and how it affects society as a whole. He wishes to establish a connection between the Oedipal Complex and the phenomenon of conscience, which involves the sense of a moral code governing our lives and our sense of guilt. In order to establish this connection, Freud discusses ambivalence, our belief in the omnipotence of our thoughts, and animal phobias and sacrificial rituals in order to make a sound, reasonable argument. Freud begins his book by comparing the psychological development between primitives, savages, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The male tribe members went to long measures to prevent incest, like hiding in bushes or running away from the female family member. Freud focuses on this idea of repressed incestuous desires that one innate has and has to constantly fight against, in order to fit in society. Freud deems this idea of incest and the killing of the totem animal as taboo, which is this idea of something being both clean/sacred and unclean/forbidden at the same time. Taboo is a prohibition forced upon people directed towards an internal, powerful desire that people want, but must avoid at all costs. The desire to violate this prohibition is deep in their unconscious. Freud acknowledges this internal desire and believes that: the persistence of the taboo, namely that the original desire to do the prohibited thing must also still persist among the tribes concerned. They must therefore have an ambivalent attitude towards their taboos. In their unconscious there is nothing they would like more than to violate them, but they are afraid to do so and the fear is stronger than the desire. The desire is unconscious, however, in every individual member of the tribe just as it is in neurotics (Freud 40). These people begin to have an ambivalent and guilty attitude towards what the taboo is actually inhibiting. They secretly, internally, unconsciously, love the idea of the prohibited act but ultimately feel guilty if they violate the tribal laws. This ambivalence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Relationships Between Western And Western Culture Intertextual relationships between texts exist to influence a reader s perception and add layers of depth to the texts meanings resulting in a heightened experience and a more significant comprehension of the texts ideas. Detecting such intertextual relationships between two wildly different texts; Walt Disney s 1994 animated musical epic, The Lion King, and Studio Gainax s 2007 animated mecha television series, Gurren Lagann, has enriched my understanding of the differences between the texts representation on the cultural issues of the bildungsroman genre (coming of age story). Despite the inherent differences between the two texts, originating from different countries, identifying the similarities, differences and changes in cultural... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both the two texts follow the The Hero s Journey story structure (also known as a monomyth), featuring the distinct departure, initiation and return phases and many of the twelve steps associated, thereby establishing an intertextual link. Both main characters embark on a journey, witness the death of a significant role model, mature as they encounter various trials and triumph over their enemies, transforming into adults throughout the process. The Lion King s story of Simba s rise to succeed his father as king reflects western attitudes towards growing up and how maturing from a child into an adult is perceived: meeting the expectations of family and society, and accepting the responsibilities associated with adulthood. Unlike The Lion King where the film ends when the protagonist, Simba, has matured into an adult, Gurren Lagann follows its protagonist, Simon, throughout his entire life detailing phases of growth a person experiences. Following his story well beyond having matured into an adult, the show proceeds beyond his first major victory and shows his struggles against an unideal future. This continuation and expansion of the story beyond adulthood represents the eastern cultural attitude towards growing up that suggests a person s growth doesn t end at adulthood but ... Victor Frankenstein Victor Frankenstein was and had always been a curious boy and intelligent boy. His childhood consisted of revealing and investigating facts about the world that he lives in. This undoubtedly led to his desire to explore and take part in adventures including his journey to the North Pole later on in his life. The quote itself however, has several interpretations. The first part explains that the world had so much to uncover, to reveal about itself. To Victor, he thought that it was a secret land that was yet to be discovered and possessed so many secrets that were left to be unveiled to the public eye. At birth, his curiosity lingered throughout not just childhood but also carried into his adult life. His curiosity was his excuse that he created to take the blame for his actions. He was curious about nature, and also about the fact that his father insisted on him not pursuing a career in chemistry. His insistence to find the truth soon led to the demise of many of his loved ones through the creation of Frankenstein, the monster he created because he was inclined to know about nature and chemistry. On the other hand, Elizabeth was not curious. She viewed the world as a vacant, blank canvas that people sought to fill with the imaginations and rather, aspirations of others as well as her. But as we began to talk about our family s we realized we had something in common and that was that most the family we have are in homeport of New York City or Long Island, New York. • 7. St. Thomas Aquinas Cosmological Argument Catholic Church: St. Thomas Aquinas (Cosmological Argument) In St. Thomas Aquinas s cosmological argument claims the following that the universe exist and its very existence has a cause and that cause is God. In his unfinished book Summa Theologiae, Aquinas put forward five ways for the existence of God. His first way is the argument from motion and by studying the works of Aristotle, the Greek Philosopher, he concluded from common observation that the planets, rolling stone or any object that is in motion is put in motion by other forces or object. From this theory, Aquinas believes there must have been an unmoved mover which is God who sets things in motion. It is certain and evident that in the world some things are set in motion. Whatever is in motion is put in motion by another. Therefore, by which it is put in motion must also be put in motion by another and by another again but this cannot go for infinity because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The final way that St. Thomas Aquinas speaks of has to do with the universe and the order of nature. Aquinas states that common sense tells us that the universe works in such a way, that one can conclude that it was designed by an intelligent designer. In other words, all physical laws and the order of nature and life were designed and ordered by God. Because whatever lacks in intelligence cannot move towards an end, unless it be directed by some being with knowledge and intelligence. Some intelligent being exists by whom all natural things are directed to their end, and this being we call God. This argument by Aquinas is suggesting that inanimate objects such as the planets could not have placed themselves into the orbits they have, because they lack the intelligence to do so. Yet they are aligned so perfectly, this must mean it must have been done so by a being with the intelligence to do so. Although we humans are intelligent, we cannot move planets, so that leaves us with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

First of all, it is obvious that, though racism is always a difficult subject to deal with, American History X presents it without any reservations or dumming down. Second, the film s figurehead for racism, Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), is not an unintelligent redneck racist as films often portray them, but is in fact well spoken, charismatic and intelligent, although he clearly holds ideals that are terribly wrong. Finally, the film shows that it is not just the white, neo nazi racists who are fools to be involved in this, but all racism is foolish. Through these methods, the film shows the viewer,... Perhaps the most tragic scene of the film is also its most effective in delivering to the audience, the emotional destruction that racism can cause. When Danny at the end of the film is shot repeatedly by a black student he had previously pissed off, Derek runs into the school, finds his brother dead, and his life and the lives of his family are changed forever. After some initial research, I discovered more information on Azo dyes, their effect on the environment, as well as wastewater treatment used to decontaminate water containing these dyes. Furthermore, they produce vibrant shades of color and are reasonably soluble in water (Liu, Wan, Nan, n.d.). However, these dyes are now manufactured at such a large scale that they bring up numerous health and environmental concerns. In recent years azo dyes, especially Allura Red AC, have been connected to child hyperactivity, which also raises concerns over other potentially toxic effects they can have on living organisms ( FDA Probes Link , 2011). This is only amplified by the fact that azo dyes such as Allura Red AC and Azo Grenadine are also especially recalcitrant to conventional methods of wastewater treatment. Research on this topic led me to an article on electrochemical advanced oxidation processes and their potential as a solution to mineralizing especially recalcitrant compounds in the environment, Decontamination of Wastewaters Containing Synthetic Organic Dyes by Electrochemical Methods: A Review. • 19. Rhetorical Analysis Of Professionss For Women By Virginia... Virginia Woolf is a famous novelist, critic, and essayist. She is most known for her novels such as: Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, The Common Reader, and several more. These novels are both fiction and nonfiction, and include compelling psychological insight. Professions for Women is another one of her famous works, and it is the shortened version of a speech that Virginia Woolf gave on January 21, 1931 to the Women s Service League. In this speech, Woolf conveyed her message about women in the professional world through the use of multiple rhetorical strategies. These strategies include her use of understatements, a variety of tones throughout the speech, and the inclusion of differing sentence structures involving both short sentences and complex sentences. Overall, Woolf has a strong belief that women should be free to work in the professional world, and she conveys this quite well through the use of these strategies. To begin, at the start of this speech Woolf utilized various understatements about herself, and when combined they both contributed vastly to helping Woolf convey her message. For example, in the first paragraph, Woolf poses a rhetorical questionthat states, It is true I am a woman; it is true I am employed; but what professional experiences have I had? Woolf is considered to be one of the most significant modernists of her century, yet in this question, she seems to believe that she is not worthy of giving this speech. This helps to convey her message because to the audience, Woolf seems more like a peer than a superior figure. By making herself seem more like a peer, Woolf has effectively made herself more trustworthy and relatable to the audience. Continuing, in the second paragraph, Woolf makes yet another understatement of herself by stating, But to tell you my story it is a simple one. Considering that Woolf is one of the most valuable modernists of her century, she is anything but simple. Yet by making this statement to the audience, she is allowing them insight into her personality and what she thinks of herself. Through this statement, Woolf has proved her humility and that she views herself as just another human being. The first understatement allowed her to be more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As wives, they became their husbands property, and symbols of power and status. Violence against women served to coerce their acquiescence in this scheme and perpetuate subservience to male relatives. For example, 22% of women report having a child before age 20 in the United States, compared to 15% in Great Britain and 11% in Canada. These differences are even greater when comparing (numbers of babies born per 1000 people per year) among younger teenagers. When one controls for poorness and (family and cultural characteristics), some, but not all, of this difference disappears. In the early 1990s, over 1 million teenagers (old/allowed to get old/got older) 15 19 became pregnant each year in the United States. This figure represents a peak of increasing rates of teen pregnancy through the 1980s and early 1990s. Hellenistic Miletus Research Paper The Milesian system was structured originally on six tribes, but when they changed to a more democratic system under Athenian influence they changed over to 12 tribes. It is highly probable that they submitted their candidates for offices from these tribes. In order to become a citizen one had to be enrolled in these tribes. Milesian territory was broken up into 5 or 7 demes or districts. The earliest officials mentioned in decrees of Hellenistic Miletus are the synedroi, whose status is not clear. They have been considered as either a standing committee of the city council or as an ad hoc commission created to deal with specific problems. cg p. 67 They worked with other city officials and institutions and were possibly responsible to the assembly. In the third century there were around 75 members, which was reduced down to 10 in the late second century. • 36. Bugs Bunny Commercial Analysis Imagine audiences sitting in the movie theater trying to escape from the looming hardships of World War II. They sit and watch as the commercials begin to play when one of the most familiar tunes in animation begins. The commercial presents itself deceptively using the classic Looney Tunes curtain opening and theme music with the simple title of Bugs Bunny. The only hint at the true purpose of advertising at this point is the producer listing of the U.S. Treasury Dept. Defense Savings Staff. The curtains quickly open with an approaching Bugs Bunny miming the fife with his carrot as The Girl I Left Behind plays in the background. This is all set against a redrawing of the classic American painting The Spirit of 76. Bugs Bunny then begins to eat the carrot he s been holding, when he suddenly begins the song Any Bonds Today? . Suddenly, the purpose of the commercial is finally revealed to the audience, with Bugs song telling people to buy war bonds. All throughout this he gestures, points and moves with an animated flair for the audience. He even exits and reenters frame with an Uncle Sam costume, eventually beginning to act like he s passing out bonds to the audience. Until, with an animated twirl Bugs Bunny appears with blackface and a different singing voice, a parody of the blackface performance Al Jolson did in the movie The Jazz Singer. Finally, the picture pulls in close on Bugs face as he wipes away the paint and once the picture pulls back out the backdrop has changed. It shows a combat scene full of planes and ships as Elmer Fuddand Porky Pigappear to help close the advertisement with singing and dancing. As the song ends a simple war bonds ad pulls into frame. It now presents a Minuteman on the left and texts that reads For Defense Buy United States Savings Bonds and Stamps. The commercial relies heavily on its ethos and pathos to convince the audience into buying war bonds, using very little logos. Furthermore, ethos is used by the commercial with the use of Bugs Bunny as the appeal for the audience. In this time, Mount Undara had a volcanic eruption that spewed molten lava onto the surrounding landscape. The lava reached 90km North and 160km north west of the volcano. An estimated 23.3 km3 of lava flowed from the volcano at a rate of about 1000 m3 every second. (Nprsr.qld.gov.au, 2015) The lava that exited the volcano reached extreme temperatures of 1200В°C, therefore destroying anything that got in it s way. The lava tubes were then formed as the top outer layer cooled and formed a crust while the molten lava below drained outwards leaving behind a series of hollow tubes. (Austhrutime.com, 2015) Caves however, have formed due to weaker lava tubes collapsing and creating depressions. The craters seen in Undara have formed from chunks of molten rock imploding the surface of the Earth due to explosions from the Mt Undara volcano. Further Diderot sites the Fathers of a council of Toledo in his definition of intolerance where they state do no violence of any kind to people in order to lead them back to faith, for God is merciful or severe to whomever he chooses (Course Pak, Chapter 2, pg. 156).
