ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS
nvironmental ethics is a branch of ethics that studies the
relation of human beings and the environment.
nvironmental ethics believe that humans are a part of society
as well as other living creatures, which includes plants and
animals. These items are a very important part of the world
and are considered to be a functional part of human life.
IF EARTH TREAT US , THE WAY
WE TREAT EARTH .
REASONS FOR STUDYING
ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS
1- Global Warming
2- Deforestation
3- Pollution
4- Acid Rain
1- Global Warming - Over the past 50 years, the average
global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded
history. And experts see the trend is accelerating: All but one
of the 16 hottest years in NASA’s 134-year record have
occurred since 2000.
 Global warming occurs when carbon dioxide (CO2) and
other air pollutants and greenhouse gases collect in the
atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have
bounced off the earth’s surface.
SOLUTION TO GLOBAL
WARMING
1- A shift to renewable sources of energy – such as wind,
solar and hydropower will help bring down demand for
fossils fuels and eventually lower the level of greenhouse
gasses emitted into the atmosphere.
2 - Buy recycled products - Minimize cutting down of trees
that help to balance the amount of greenhouse gasses in the
atmosphere by buying recycled paper products.
3-Keep devices and appliances switched off- When not
using devices and appliances such as laptops, ovens, television
and so on, make sure they are switched off.
4- Less driving- Minimal driving is tantamount to less
emission. Less driving also means less out-of-pocket costs.
Choosing healthy activities such as walking and riding a bicycle
is a great way to cut back on atmospheric emissions.
5- Stop deforestation- We can fight global warming by
reducing deforestation and forest degradation.
2 - Deforestation - Deforestation in simple term the
felling and clearing of forest cover or tree plantations in order
to accommodate agricultural, industrial or urban use. It
involves permanent end of forest cover to make that land
available for residential, commercial or industrial purpose.
 According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO), an estimated 18 million acres (7.3 million
hectares) of forest are lost each year.
EFFECTS OF DEFORESTATION
1- Increase in Global Warming: Trees play a major role in
controlling global warming. The trees utilize the green house
gases, restoring the balance in the atmosphere.
2- Soil Erosion: Also due to the shade of trees the soil remains
moist. With the clearance of tree cover, the soil is directly exposed
to the sun, making it dry.
.
ildlife Extinction: Due to massive felling down of trees,
various species of animals are lost. They lose their habitat and
forced to move to new location.
Floods: When it rains, trees absorb and store large amount of
water with the help of their roots. When they are cut down,
they start over floating.
SOLUTIONS TO
DEFORESTATION
1- The best solution to deforestation is to curb the felling of
trees, by employing a series of rules and laws to govern it.
2- Clear cutting of forests must be banned. This will curb
total depletion of the forest cover. It is a practical solution and
is very feasible.
3- cutting must  be replaced by  planting young trees to
replace the older ones that were cut.
3-ENVIRONMENTAL
POLLUTION
ollution is the contamination of the environment by
introduction of contaminants that can cause damage to
environment and harm or discomfort to humans or other
living species.
It is the addition of another form of any substance or form
of energy to the environment at a rate faster than the
environment can accommodate it by dispersion, breakdown,
recycling, or storage in some harmless form.
CAUSES OF POLLUTION
1- Pollution from cars, trucks, and other vehicles
2-Fossil fuel emissions from power plants
3-A continually growing population of humans and clear cutting of
forests
4-Water pollution is a major issue. Many industries dump wastes
into rivers, lakes, ponds etc.
5-Electromagnetic radiation is another insidious culprit. The major
concern around this type of radiation was due to high tension wires
which carry huge amounts of electricity to cities.
SOLUTIONS TO ENVIRONMENTAL
POLLUTION
lectric and hybrid vehicles and public transportation systems.
cologically friendly power technologies being built every day.
olar power is a fantastic solution.
ind power is coming into play
4- ACID RAIN
Acid rain simply means rain that is acidic in nature due to the
presence of certain pollutants in the atmosphere. These pollutants
come in the atmosphere due to car or industrial processes. Acid rain
can occur in form of rain, snow, fog or dry material that settle to
earth. Acid rain can also be caused due to man-made sources which
include combustion of fossil fuels which release sulfur dioxide and
nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. Acid rain can have devastating
effects on aquatic life, forests, public health and architecture and
buildings.
CAUSES OF ACID RAIN
Natural Sources - The major natural causal agent for acid rain is volcanic
emissions. Volcanoes emit acid producing gases to create higher than normal
amounts of acid rain or any other form of precipitation such as fog and snow
to an extent of affecting vegetation cover and health of residents within the
surrounding.
. Man-made sources - Human activities leading to chemical gas emissions such
as sulfur and nitrogen are the primary contributors to acid rain. The activities
include air pollution sources emitting sulfur and nitrogen gases like factories,
power generations facilities, and automobiles.
SOLUTIONS TO ACID RAIN
1- Cleaning up Exhaust Pipes and Smokestacks
2- Restoring Damaged Environments
3- Alternative Energy Sources
4- Individual, National/State, and International
Actions
ETHICAL GUIDELINES TO WORK
WITH EARTH:
Ecosphere and Ecosystems:
1- We should not deplete or degrade the earth’s physical, chemical or
biological capital, which supports all life and all human economic
activities.
2- We should try to understand and cooperate with rest of the nature.
3- We should work with rest of the nature to sustain the ecological
integrity, biodiversity and adaptability of the earth’s life support systems.
4- When we must alter nature to meet our needs or wants, we should
choose methods that do the least possible harm to us and other
living things.
5- Before we alter nature, we should carry out an Environmental
Impact Assessment to evaluate proposed actions and discover how
to inflict the minimum short – and long-term environmental harm.
SPECIES AND CULTURES:
. Every species has a right to live or at least struggle to live. Simply because it
exists.
. We should work to preserve as much of the earth’s genetic variety as
possible because it is the raw material for all future evolution.
. We have the right to defend ourselves against individuals of species that do
us harm and to use individuals of species to meet our vital needs but we
should strive not to cause premature extinction of any wild species.
INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY:
1. We should not inflict unnecessary suffering or pain on any animal we
raise or hunt for food or use for scientific or other purposes.
2. We should use no more of the earth’s resources than we need and
not waste such resources.
3. We should leave the earth as good as—or better—than we found it.
4. We should work with the earth to help heal ecological wounds we
have inflicted.
