Environmental impact assessment (EIA)
In India any person who desires to undertake any new project or the expansion or modernization of any existing industry or project should submit a Rapid Environmental Impact Assessment report along with application to the secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), New Delhi. Basic types of EIA being practiced are given below.
Rapid Environmental Impact Assessment (REIA)
Comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (CEIA)
Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA)
Sectoral Environment Impact Assessment
Regional Environmental Impact Assessment
Environmental Impact Assessment Notification in India
EIA is of comparatively recent origin in India and has become an integral part of Environmental Management by EIA notification of 1994 and its subsequent amendments by Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF), Govt. of India. The notification specifies 30 categories of projects with potential risks to degrade the Environment.
Purposes of EIA
EIA is a process with several important purposes, which can be categorized as follows:
To facilitate decision-making For the decision-maker, for example the local authority, it provides a systematic examination of the environmental implications of a proposed action, and sometimes alternatives, before a decision is taken
To aid in the formation of development EIA can be of great benefit to them, since it can provide a framework for considering location and design issues and environmental issues in parallel. It can be an aid to the formulation of developmental actions, indicating areas where the project can be modified to minimize or eliminate altogether the adverse impacts on the environment.
To be an instrument for sustainable development The key characteristics of sustainable development include maintaining the overall quality of life, maintaining continuing access to natural resources and avoiding lasting environmental damage.

PROGRAMMES OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION.pptxDrHafizKosar
UNO Started IEEP (International Environmental Educational Programme) in the year 1975. The first inter-governmental conference on environmental education was held at Tiblisi (soviet Georgia) in 1977.
1. Population Challenges in Pakistan
- With 243 million citizens, Pakistan is the fifth-most populated nation globally (Worldometer, 2023).
- Predicted to approach 300 million by the end of the century, surpassing the United States (United Nations).
2. Environmental Regulatory Boards and the Conceptual Model
The establishment of the Pakistan Ministry of Environment in 1975 was a pivotal response to the Stockholm Declaration of 1972. This move signified a commitment to addressing environmental concerns within the nation. Subsequently, in 1983, the Pakistan Environmental Protection Ordinance (PEPO) was drafted, marking the inception of the country's first environmental protection law (Ahsan & Khawaja, 2013).
3. PEPA-97, the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act of 1997
The Pakistan Environmental Protection Act, 1997 (PEPA-97) was created and put into effect in 1997 with the goals of protecting, conserving, and restoring the environment as well as preventing and controlling pollution. Additionally, until 1997, a number of changes were made to the rules and regulations to improve their usefulness.
4. The Central Laboratory for Networking and Environmental Analysis
CLEAN Section 5 of the Pakistan Environmental Act (PEPA) 1997 established the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency. Enforcing PEPA 1997 rules and regulations is one of CLEAN's primary responsibilities.
5. Legal Enforcement Directorate of Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency
The Application of Law Enforcement and execution of environmental legislation and the National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) are major responsibilities of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency's Legal Enforcement (L/E) Directorate.
Determine and remove obstacles that affect the National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) and the enforcement of environmental legislation.
6. Environmental Pollution and Role of Regulations
6.1 The Global Challenge of Environmental Pollution
Environmental pollution poses a significant threat worldwide, and Pakistan is no exception. Despite its severity, insufficient efforts are being made to address this issue effectively. The government plays a pivotal role in environmental protection, but in Pakistan, finding effective strategies amidst financial crises, political instability, corruption, and law and order issues is a complex challenge.
Climate Change Impacts
While Pakistan is not a major emitter of greenhouse gases contributing to climate change, it still faces significant impacts. Climate change is a global problem that requires collaborative efforts from authorities, regulatory bodies, and the public. Working together is crucial to tackle these environmental challenges and pave the way for a healthier and sustainable future.
Environmental management: Introduction and scopeRashmi Yadav

Importance of Environmental Education
Man's rapid consumption of natural resources and energy has led to a disregard for the environment. He has become a super animal, creating favorable environments for his own welfare. However, this imbalance has long-term consequences, creating problems for future generations. Activities like deforestation, industrialization, urbanization, and chemical fertilizers contribute to environmental change. Industrial growth has increased CO2 content, leading to global warming and melting polar ice, potentially affecting low-lying lands.
Climatic changes, air pollution, and acid rains due to industrialization have led to global problems. Environmental principles are applied in forest management, but rapid industrialization and exploitation have led to serious issues. Ozone layer depletion, deforestation, and urbanization have impacted the global ecosystem. Forests conserve soil, cover ice, and provide water, but they also contribute to air pollution and skin cancer.
Deforestation leads to rapid ice melting, floods, drought, and loss of O2-CO2 balance in the air. It also threatens wildlife habitats and species. To conserve air, land, and water, it is crucial to educate youth, engineers, and administrators on ecological principles and the importance of judicious use of natural resources to prevent pollution of air, water, and land.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT - WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE T...vijay kumar sarabu
There is direct relationship between environment and economic development. Economic development without environmental considerations can cause serious environmental damage in turn impairing the quality of life of present and future generations. In the process of economic development, the environmental problems have been ignored or less concentrated. Any country’s environmental problems are related to the level of its economic development, the availability of natural resources and the lifestyle of its population. In India, rapid growth of population, poverty, urbanization, industrialization and several related factors are responsible for the rapid degradation of the environment. Environmental problems have become serious in many parts of the country, and hence cannot be ignored. The main environmental problems in India relate to air and water pollution particularly in metropolitan cities and industrial zones, degradation of common property resources (Tanks, Ponds Lakes, Rivers, Forests etc.) which affect the poor adversely as they depends on them for their livelihood, threat to biodiversity and inadequate system of solid waste disposal and sanitation with consequent adverse impact on health, infant mortality and birth rate.
The National Environmental Policy seeks to extend the coverage, and fill in the gaps that still exist, in light of present knowledge and accumulated experiences.
NEP is a policy formulated in 2006 by Ministry of Environment and Forest,Govt. of India for providing certain strategies and standards that ensures environmental safety to surrounding areas, working areas, laboratories or facilities, are free from dangers.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

5. Environmental policy refers to the commitment of an
organization to the laws, regulations, and other policy
mechanisms concerning environmental issues.
These issues generally include air and water pollution,
solid waste management, biodiversity, ecosystem
management, maintenance of biodiversity, the
protection of natural resources, wildlife and
endangered species
6. The 1960s marked the beginning of modern
environmental policy making.
After the publication of Silent Spring By Rachel Carson
and 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California,
the stage had been set for change in environment.
7. In July 1970, President Nixon had signed
Reorganization Plan No. 3 calling for the establishment of
EPA .
At that time, Environmental Policy was a bipartisan issue and
the efforts of the United States of America helped spark
countries around the world to create environmental policies.
President Nixon signed the Clean Air Act in 1970 which set
the USA as one of the world leaders in environmental
conservation.
8. ISO 14001
The goals of EMS are
To increase compliance and reduce waste
Compliance is the act of reaching and maintaining
minimal legal standards. By not being compliant,
companies may face fines, government intervention
or may not be able to operate.
Waste reduction goes beyond compliance to reduce
environmental impact. The EMS helps to develop,
implement, manage, coordinate and monitor
environmental policies. Waste reduction begins at the
design phase through pollution prevention and waste
minimization. At the end of the life cycle, waste is
reduced by recycling

19. In Pakistan we also need to strengthen the motor
vehicle testing program in which private sector
should be invited to setup testing stations and it
should be made mandatory for cars to get fitness
certificate every year without which they should not
be allowed to come on roads.
20. There must be software programs developed
for registering industrial data on environment.
This program should be linked to every
industry with the Internet and it may be given
access to a centralized database in
Islamabad.
21. Demand for Environmental Managers –
There is a lot of demand for environmental
managers especially from the lenders i.e.
World Bank and ADB.
Youngsters, both male/female, should do
Masters in environmental studies as this field
has a great future in Pakistan.
22. Formulate and implement “Environmental Friendly Schools Policy”
for public and private sector to ensure the provision of best physical
