Comparison of satellite imagery based ice drift with wind model for the Caspi...Sergey Vernyayev
Many factors influencing the movement of ice such as wind, ice concentration, ice thickness,
roughness, water currents, Coriolis force, bathymetry, artificial and natural obstacles in the area. Current speeds in the Caspian Sea are relatively small and so the main driving force for ice movements is wind. Therefore, main goal of this work was to study wind-ice movement velocities dependence in the region and check how ice concentration and thickness influence on the movement of ice. A high number of measurements and observations was made to describe ice drift in the region, although the data was collected areas and usually not publicly available. In our work, we have used timely consequent optical and SAR satellite images to observe ice movements and its displacement over the area. Wind data for the same period and area was taken from wind models. Ice charts were prepared using visual interpretation of satellite imagery. Ice information (concentration, stage of development, floe size) were stored as vector data in SIGRID3 format. The described data has been correlated and analyzed. The analysis provided in the work can be used for the forecast of short term ice drift on the operational basis and can be the first step for creation of ice drift forecast model for the region of North Caspian Sea. The used data, methods and results of the study are described in this paper.

This narrated PowerPoint presentation describes a HEC-RAS 2-D unsteady-flow flood model set up for the tidally-influenced Little River in Newburyport and Newbury, Massachusetts. It describes the steps in developing inputs to the HEC-RAS model including using HEC-HMS rainfall-runoff modeling and GIS in developing inputs to HEC-HMS. The HEC-RAS model was calibrated using the Mother's Day flood of May 2006. The HEC-RAS model may be used to evaluate impacts associated with proposed changes in culvert sizes or changing embankment elevations near or at problem flood areas and can also be used to determine the changes in river hydraulics associated with sea level rise and climate change.

It is increasingly being recognised internationally that integrated catchment management (ICM) is a useful organising framework for tackling the ongoing challenge of balancing sustainable use and development of our natural resource, against achieving environmental goals. The basic principles of ICM (Williams, 2012) are to:
• Take a holistic and integrated approach to the management of land, biodiversity, water and community resources at the water catchment scale;
• Involve communities in planning and managing their landscapes; and
• Find a balance between resource use and resource conservation
ICM is now well established in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. In Europe the ICM approach has been proposed as being required to achieve effective water and catchment management, and is the approach being promoted by DEFRA for the UK, where it is called the “Catchment Based Approach” (CaBA). The principles and methodologies behind ICM sit well within the context of the Water Framework Directive with its aims and objectives for good water quality, sustainable development and public participation in water resource management. In Ireland it is proposed that the ICM approach will underlie the work and philosophy in developing and implementing future River Basin Management Plans.

The report also includes some reflections on mapping fisheries and renewable energy, mainly wind power, in the Baltic Sea region.
We have processed and made available shipping density maps and data spanning ten years, from year 2006 to 2015. All maps are available through the HELCOM AIS Explorer - http://maps.helcom.fi/website/AISexplorer/index.html.
The maps were created from quality controlled AIS data, Automatic Identification System data. The data allows you to compare the shipping data by months and by ship types.
Environmental Response Management Application (ERMA): From Portsmouth Respons...Kurt Schwehr
In 2007, a small UNH team put together a prototype emergency response web application using open source tools on a Mac Desktop and later a Mac Mini. That system, called Portsmouth Response, was designed to assist in the first hours of an environmental incident by providing easy access to basic GIS layers without requiring GIS experts. This system generalized and renamed to ERMA, begin deployed as prototypes in the Caribbean and participating in the Spill Of National Significance (SONS) drill in New England during March 2010. Before the team could evaluate the performance during the SONS drill, the Deepwater Horizon platform exploded in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010. Four days later, the ERMA team was called in for 24x7 support of NOAA and USCG operations to handle the incident. ERMA went from prototype system to being the system providing the Common Operational Picture (COP) is just a few weeks. In early June, NOAA setup a system to mirror the unrestricted datasets for the public on the GeoPlatform system. The presentation describes how ERMA is designed and how it was used during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill incident.
