INTRODUCTION: DEFINTION OF SKETCHING
Sketching is essential in the view of the fact that it is like free writing. It is an ideal
way to develop a concrete illustration on every wild idea imagined without the fear of
making a mistake on paper. For some, sketching is something intricate yet soothing,
monotonous yet appealing, sombre yet fascinating and unfortunately for some, it may be
just a vain attempt. Sketches are part of brainstorming processes as it allows artists and
an architecture student like myself to be able to determine which ideas work well and
which do not. Sketches are crucially used to present a design idea to a client in the
architectural field. Whilst there are no right or wrongs when learning how to sketch, there
are certain matters to consider when striving to produce an attractive sketch.
2ND PARAGRAPH: THE DRAWING TOOLS NEEDED
Therefore, before embarking on my sketch adventure,I prepared suitable tools
and sketching materials as it will be difficult when using a poor quality or the wrong
materials to sketch. I prepared a variety of high quality sketching pencils from the range of
6H to 8B. H pencils are the hardest pencils. They are used for sketching thin and straight
lines. They are mostly used for architectural sketches. Moreover,B pencils are the softest
pencils, and are used for making smudges or blurry lines for shading one's sketch. Other
than that, I prepared an eraser,a ruler and a sketch pad. However, other tools can be used
as well such as charcoal depending on one's preference.Hence,it is important to select
suitable materials as it affects the overall appearance of your sketch.
3RD PARAGRAPH: THE OBSERVATION
Moving on to the next step, it is time to choose a subject to draw on.It could be your
surroundings,a person or even a kitchen object. As for me, I will be sketching a rice
cooker. t is a useful and versatile kitchen appliance. It can be found in every homes of an
asian family. Enough said, now that I have selected I took several minutes to study my
object and paid attention to a few things. For example, the source of light, contrasting
colours and also the shape of my rice cooker.Like all rice cookers, mine is shaped like a
wide cylinder and is silver in colour.Furthermore, it takes a strong pair of eyes to perceive
shadows and contrast of an object. Locating the primary light source of an object will
determine where you will sketch the lightest and where you will sketch the darkest.
4TH PARAGRAPH: FURTHER SKETCHING DETAILS
Now for the fun part,it is time to embark on my sketch adventure! I started off with a
practice of some hand movements on a piece of paper to warm up my hand. I drew circles
and horizontal lines for five minutes. After that, I placed my object on the table and shined
light at it in order to get a more clearer and well defined picture of my object. To begin my
sketch,I started off with a H pencil and did a gesture drawing of the shape of my rice
cooker by using light strokes with loose hands. A gesture drawing is a form of sketching
where you use connected lines to draw your subject. It helps to give you a base for your
drawing. After achieving the ideal sketch shape, I proceed to an 8B pencil to define the
strokes more precisely.I added more details and inner shapes to make sure they are to
scale. When I was done, I noticed smudges on the paper. No worries! Eraser to the rescue!
I then removed it with my superhero eraser. Moving on, I sketched in the shading as well
as the highlights which adds the details and definiton to my sketch. All I had to do was
observe the light and dark areas of my object according to the light contrast.Hence,it gave
me a more realistic looking sketch of my rice cooker.
CONCLUSION:
As for the final step,I took a step back, looked at my work of art, and compared it to
my still object. I noticed some differences and did some adjustment. I added further details
and perfected my lines and presentation until my sketch was up to my representation
expectations. It took me about an hour to complete everything. Don't fall into perfectionism
and beat yourself up if your sketch doesn't come out the way you wanted it to. It'll only
discourage you from sketching. All artists are continuously learning through their lives
trying to improve. To conclude, It felt so good to see an accomplishment of hard work.I
really enjoy sketching as it appears to be magical when you watch something take shape
on a piece of paper in front of you and knowing that it came from you.

ENGLISH PROCESS ESSAY(PROJECT 1)

  • 1. SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, BUILDING AND DESIGN FOUNDATION IN NATURAL BUILD ENVIRONMENT NAME: ROSABELLA ZUNTIVAI MOBIJOHN STUDENT ID NO: 0322106 WORD COUNT: 762 ENGLISH 1 (ELG 30505) WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 1: PROCESS ESSAY LECTURER: CASSANDRA WIJESURIA SUBMISSION DATE: 11th MAY 2015
  • 2. ESSAY DRAFT INTRODUCTION: DEFINTION OF SKETCHING Sketching is essential in the view of the fact that it is like free writing. It is an ideal way to develop a concrete illustration on every wild idea imagined without the fear of making a mistake on paper. For some, sketching is something intricate yet soothing, monotonous yet appealing, sombre yet fascinating and unfortunately for some, it may be just a vain attempt. Sketches are part of brainstorming processes as it allows artists and an architecture student like myself to be able to determine which ideas work well and which do not. Sketches are crucially used to present a design idea to a client in the architectural field. Whilst there are no right or wrongs when learning how to sketch, there are certain matters to consider when striving to produce an attractive sketch. 2ND PARAGRAPH: THE DRAWING TOOLS NEEDED Therefore, before embarking on my sketch adventure,I prepared suitable tools and sketching materials as it will be difficult when using a poor quality or the wrong materials to sketch. I prepared a variety of high quality sketching pencils from the range of 6H to 8B. H pencils are the hardest pencils. They are used for sketching thin and straight lines. They are mostly used for architectural sketches. Moreover,B pencils are the softest pencils, and are used for making smudges or blurry lines for shading one's sketch. Other than that, I prepared an eraser,a ruler and a sketch pad. However, other tools can be used as well such as charcoal depending on one's preference.Hence,it is important to select suitable materials as it affects the overall appearance of your sketch.
  • 3. 3RD PARAGRAPH: THE OBSERVATION Moving on to the next step, it is time to choose a subject to draw on.It could be your surroundings,a person or even a kitchen object. As for me, I will be sketching a rice cooker. t is a useful and versatile kitchen appliance. It can be found in every homes of an asian family. Enough said, now that I have selected I took several minutes to study my object and paid attention to a few things. For example, the source of light, contrasting colours and also the shape of my rice cooker.Like all rice cookers, mine is shaped like a wide cylinder and is silver in colour.Furthermore, it takes a strong pair of eyes to perceive shadows and contrast of an object. Locating the primary light source of an object will determine where you will sketch the lightest and where you will sketch the darkest. 4TH PARAGRAPH: FURTHER SKETCHING DETAILS Now for the fun part,it is time to embark on my sketch adventure! I started off with a practice of some hand movements on a piece of paper to warm up my hand. I drew circles and horizontal lines for five minutes. After that, I placed my object on the table and shined light at it in order to get a more clearer and well defined picture of my object. To begin my sketch,I started off with a H pencil and did a gesture drawing of the shape of my rice cooker by using light strokes with loose hands. A gesture drawing is a form of sketching where you use connected lines to draw your subject. It helps to give you a base for your drawing. After achieving the ideal sketch shape, I proceed to an 8B pencil to define the strokes more precisely.I added more details and inner shapes to make sure they are to scale. When I was done, I noticed smudges on the paper. No worries! Eraser to the rescue! I then removed it with my superhero eraser. Moving on, I sketched in the shading as well as the highlights which adds the details and definiton to my sketch. All I had to do was observe the light and dark areas of my object according to the light contrast.Hence,it gave me a more realistic looking sketch of my rice cooker.
  • 4. CONCLUSION: As for the final step,I took a step back, looked at my work of art, and compared it to my still object. I noticed some differences and did some adjustment. I added further details and perfected my lines and presentation until my sketch was up to my representation expectations. It took me about an hour to complete everything. Don't fall into perfectionism and beat yourself up if your sketch doesn't come out the way you wanted it to. It'll only discourage you from sketching. All artists are continuously learning through their lives trying to improve. To conclude, It felt so good to see an accomplishment of hard work.I really enjoy sketching as it appears to be magical when you watch something take shape on a piece of paper in front of you and knowing that it came from you.
