5. English Essay (Process Writing)
The French Revolution, it was said to have changed the world’s perception
about art. Food plantings, breath taking scenery, famous portraits, famous
buildings and monuments, beautifully detailed potteries and paintings, all these
can be seen as a form of art pieces everywhere. But all these were first come as
ideas that had been sketched beforehand. Sketching is describe as the activity of
doing quick, informal drawings of what we see around us or ideas that is in our
head and expresses it out by drawing. Sketch can be anything, such as
monuments, scenery, portraits or personal ideas. However, sketches are not to be
labored or overworked, as they are mere initial plans or ideas of what is to be
done. They can be created by using any medium like pencils and papers or
computer software. Ever wondered why most of today’s artists has a messy room?
This is because sketching allows them to express their ideas and plans before
engaging on a more precise piece of work. Likewise, as an architecture student,
sketching is important because it allows me to brainstorm and express my ideas
and at the same time improves my drawing. As such, this essay is about the steps
that I have personally taken to create a sketch of a pair of chopsticks.
For starters, I chose a particular kitchen utensil called chopsticks. Personally I
like to use the medium-length with small flat rectangular ends chopsticks from
Korea. They are made out of stainless steel, and because metals can be slippery,
these chopsticks are made rough or ornately decorated at ends in order to
6. diminish that trait. Metal chopsticks are shiny silver in color and they do not reek
any smell. Other than that, it produces a bright and high pitched “Ding” sound
when it hits the floor. We often use chopsticks in our daily life for example, eating
noodles, mixing eggs using chopsticks instead of whisks, prop up plants using
chopsticks to give the seedling support. On the contrary, chopsticks isn’t merely a
tool for you to shove food into your mouth. In fact, they are actually the best
cooking tools a cook can possibly have. The reason I chose this kitchen utensil is
because it is economical. They are economical as they are sturdy, durable, and
they don’t change in quality.
Drawing tools are necessary not just in sketching, but also in anything that
involves with art. Thus, the drawing tools used in sketching my kitchen utensil, the
chopsticks, are the HB, 2B, 4B pencils, and a mechanical pen. Firstly, the HB
pencil is used to sketch out the chopsticks as it is the lightest in color among the
pencils. Secondly, I used a 2B pencil to darken the sketch. Then, the 4B and 6B
pencils are used in shading parts of the sketch. Next, the mechanical pen is used
to draw the outer line of the chopsticks. Additionally, a ruler is also needed to
balance and to measure the length of the chopsticks. Personally, I for one is a
person that needs a clean and clear empty working space for me to begin my
sketch with a peace mind because I will feel very uncomfortable and frustrated if
there are too much things in my work space.
After the shading of the chopsticks are done, the sketch wasn’t very satisfying
7. for me. So, I sketched out a hand that looks like its holding the chopsticks and
shaded them using the same process and method as the chopsticks. Besides that,
lighting and contouring is needed to beautify the sketch. I used the 4B pencil to
shade the bottom area of the hand and switched to the 2B pencil to shade the
outer parts of the shadow. Finally, I used an mechanical pen to darken the
chopsticks. Of course, they were many mistakes made during the sketching and
shading, but it was easy to correct them using an eraser to carefully erase the
mistaken parts and re-sketch or re-shade them with the pencils.
As a conclusion, the time taken for me to produce a finalized sketch is about
15 minutes or more because there were many mistakes done during the sketching
and shading part. I felt happy and satisfied after completing my sketch because it
took a lot of hard work I would definitely do this again as it would help me to
improve my sketching skills.
