HOW TO PRODUCE AN ATTRACTIVE SKETCH
A sketch is a rapidly executed freehand drawing that is no usually intended as a
finish work. A sketch may serve a number of purposes .It might record something
that the artist sees ,record or develop an idea for later use or as a quick way of
graphical demonstrating an image , idea or principle. Thus sketches are easy to
produce, and only simple steps are needed to produce an attractive sketch.
Firstly ,to produce an attractive sketch you have to prepare and identify your
needed tools and materials .Only simple and common items are needed for
sketching. For example ,a piece of paper , a few graphite pencil of various grades or
mechanical pencil and an eraser. However, depending on the situation other tools
can be also considered as well. Sketch pads are convenient when you are sketching
outdoors .Ink and charcoal can be used in the place of a pencil to produce sketches
with different feels. If you can afford it ,it is also recommendable to buy different
grade pencil and better quality ones for a better sketching experience. Before you
begin sketching it is probably a good idea to play around with different materials
before setting on one that you have preference for.
The second step in producing an attractive sketch is choosing a subject .Before you
sketch ,you must know what to sketch. If you do not have a subject it will just end up
with u doodling over your paper. Your subject could be anything from the mug
sitting beside you to the big and massive skyscrapers . You should start by choosing
things that you are interested in. This can keep you motivated to produce a better
sketch and to start and finish the sketch. Also it is advisable to not be over
ambitious .If you have problems sketching a moving object ,then start small by
sketching still life beside you. For example, potted plants ,bottles , pencils or
anything on your desk. Make sure to observe you subject from different angles, it
will help you add perspective to your sketch. Having perspective is a great help in
producing 3Dimentional like sketches ,that will help you make your sketches more
vivid and real.
The last but most important part is to begin sketching. Don’t be intimidated by the
blank paper in front of you. Start by sketching a light drawing on it .This will help you
keep a record of drawing and will allow you to re-work on the sketch over and over
again . Be a critic of your work, as it is important to improve yourself. If you find
mistakes go back and correct them. Follow up the lighter strokes with darker lines
and try to pay attention to the details this time. Fill in the sketch with shading or
texturing .If you choose to go with shading ,keep in mind that the best effects are
given when attention is paid to light. In the end do not be discourage by the end
result. Remember , a poor drawing is not and should not be the last. Vincent Van
Gogh once said ,”in spite of everything I shall rise again ,I will take up my pencil,
which I have forsaken in my great discouragement, and I will go on with my drawing.”
In a nut shell, sketching is a simple yet effective way of self expression and as a
important tool for people like architects ,it is a personal way of capturing images and
a professional way in expressing ideas, as in sketches we are truly viewing the world
through the artist’s eye. Furthermore , sketching is also an invaluable tool that helps
to develop a person’s observational skills and sometimes even relieve stress .
