ENGLISH ASSIGNMENT 1 (DRAFT)
A sketch is defined as a rough and quick drawing to describe something without
a lot of details. Sketching skills usually useful to art student or art profession. For a
student from Foundation in Natural and Built Environment, this is a good chance for us
to explore the process of sketching throughout this project. As a student that will be
going to be a quantity surveyor, it is quite important for me to experience how to sketch
although it is not in our study field. In my opinion, a sketch is a drawing that can record
down every thought in our mind no matter anytime or anywhere. Therefore, how to
produce an attractive sketch?
The first thing I need to do before sketching is to choose what I want to sketch. I
have chosen kitchen peeler as my sketching material as the theme was set for us which
is kitchen utensils. It was a great task for us as we can experience how to sketch an
object because I never sketch before. The reason I choose peeler as my sketch object
is because it was the first object appear in my mind when the task is given. Peeler is
formed by a small rectangular shaped cutter attached to the plastic-made holder. The
cutter of the peeler is still sharp after used for years because my finger was just
accidentally peeled by the peeler! Peeler is using to remove the outer layer of food such
as potato, apple and etc. There are two types of peeler which is straight peeler and Y-
shaped peeler. The peeler that I am going to sketch is straight peeler because it is the
only type of peeler in my house that my grandparents know how to use it.
Before I start to sketch, I went to the bookshop to buy some necessary
stationary. I had use H and 2B pencils, eraser, sharpener, tissues, A3 drawing paper
and table lamp for my sketch. I did not use a mechanical pencil to sketch as it cannot
produce the effect as good as using pencil. H pencil used for light shadow effect while
2B pencil used for the darker shadow effect. Tissue played a very important role in
sketching as it can use to create the effect of shadow better than using our fingers by
rubbing it on the paper. I also use table lamp to create the shadow of the peeler. I
adjusted the angle until I satisfied with it. After sketch tools were prepared, it is
important to prepare our self mentally. I had clear my mind and keep calm so that it
would not affect my mood when I am sketching.
After everything was prepared, I start to sketch. It was a difficult task for me as
this was my first time to sketch. I have no idea on how to sketch an object. I did search
on Youtube website where it would have any tutorial teaching on how to sketch for a
beginner like me. Unfortunately, there was no tutor to teach me. So, I explore the
sketching skills myself. I tried the shadow effect and drew some object on a draft paper
as a testing. After I tried, I practice sketching the peeler. During sketching, I found that I
am not good in shadowing the object. It is quite hard for me as I need to decide which
pencil I need to use for different levels of shadow. After I done my sketching, I had
asked my family for their opinion. I also took a picture of it and sent to my friends to get
their comments. It was just black, white and many levels of grey. There is still a lot for
me to improve in sketching especially shadowing the object. I knew my mistakes and I
tried again and again to sketch it. In the end, I success to sketch the peeler completely
with shadow and 3-D effect.
The sketch took me about two days to complete. During this two days, I gave
myself some break time to calm down and clear my mind as I failed many times. I had
modified the sketch several times until I did the best sketch. This sketch project had
given me an opportunity to learn new things and upgrade myself. I also found that it was
actually fun and I enjoyed the satisfaction after I completed the sketch. I will do this
again in future as it was a really fresh and great experience for me.

  • 1. ENGLISH ASSIGNMENT 1 (DRAFT) A sketch is defined as a rough and quick drawing to describe something without a lot of details. Sketching skills usually useful to art student or art profession. For a student from Foundation in Natural and Built Environment, this is a good chance for us to explore the process of sketching throughout this project. As a student that will be going to be a quantity surveyor, it is quite important for me to experience how to sketch although it is not in our study field. In my opinion, a sketch is a drawing that can record down every thought in our mind no matter anytime or anywhere. Therefore, how to produce an attractive sketch? The first thing I need to do before sketching is to choose what I want to sketch. I have chosen kitchen peeler as my sketching material as the theme was set for us which is kitchen utensils. It was a great task for us as we can experience how to sketch an object because I never sketch before. The reason I choose peeler as my sketch object is because it was the first object appear in my mind when the task is given. Peeler is formed by a small rectangular shaped cutter attached to the plastic-made holder. The cutter of the peeler is still sharp after used for years because my finger was just accidentally peeled by the peeler! Peeler is using to remove the outer layer of food such as potato, apple and etc. There are two types of peeler which is straight peeler and Y- shaped peeler. The peeler that I am going to sketch is straight peeler because it is the only type of peeler in my house that my grandparents know how to use it.
  • 2. Before I start to sketch, I went to the bookshop to buy some necessary stationary. I had use H and 2B pencils, eraser, sharpener, tissues, A3 drawing paper and table lamp for my sketch. I did not use a mechanical pencil to sketch as it cannot produce the effect as good as using pencil. H pencil used for light shadow effect while 2B pencil used for the darker shadow effect. Tissue played a very important role in sketching as it can use to create the effect of shadow better than using our fingers by rubbing it on the paper. I also use table lamp to create the shadow of the peeler. I adjusted the angle until I satisfied with it. After sketch tools were prepared, it is important to prepare our self mentally. I had clear my mind and keep calm so that it would not affect my mood when I am sketching. After everything was prepared, I start to sketch. It was a difficult task for me as this was my first time to sketch. I have no idea on how to sketch an object. I did search on Youtube website where it would have any tutorial teaching on how to sketch for a beginner like me. Unfortunately, there was no tutor to teach me. So, I explore the sketching skills myself. I tried the shadow effect and drew some object on a draft paper as a testing. After I tried, I practice sketching the peeler. During sketching, I found that I am not good in shadowing the object. It is quite hard for me as I need to decide which pencil I need to use for different levels of shadow. After I done my sketching, I had asked my family for their opinion. I also took a picture of it and sent to my friends to get their comments. It was just black, white and many levels of grey. There is still a lot for me to improve in sketching especially shadowing the object. I knew my mistakes and I
  • 3. tried again and again to sketch it. In the end, I success to sketch the peeler completely with shadow and 3-D effect. The sketch took me about two days to complete. During this two days, I gave myself some break time to calm down and clear my mind as I failed many times. I had modified the sketch several times until I did the best sketch. This sketch project had given me an opportunity to learn new things and upgrade myself. I also found that it was actually fun and I enjoyed the satisfaction after I completed the sketch. I will do this again in future as it was a really fresh and great experience for me.
