1. Sketching is totally different from finished work. It can be determined as a
brief plan, outlines or preliminary study. A sketch can come out with rough and hasty
details which helps designer to produce basic ideas or drawings. By sketching, a
people will slowly began to open up more concepts. Try to imagine that how
important sketching is to a future architect. With a freehand sketch, a project will be
ran efficiently by an architect and it saves a lot of time from escapism. On the other
hand, an architect might fail to design a project without sketching. That is the reason
why every design project should start with a sketch no matter what kind of project it
is. Today, my process essay is about how to sketch a kitchen utensil.
Among all of the kitchen utensils, I have chosen frying pan as my sketching
object. First of all, it is necessary to observe your sketching material in three senses
before you start to produce your sketch, such as sight, hear and touch. How does a
frying pan looks like? A frying pan comes with a round surface which provide low
sides that slant outwards, a long handle to avoid from burns and scalds and no lid.
Usually, there will be a hole at the end of the handle so the pan will able to hang on
the wall. Generally, a modern frying pan comes with different function while in
different sizes and some of the frying pans are with two handle in the opposite side.
Frying pan plays an important role in our life. In our daily life, a frying pan can be
used for frying, searing, browning any type of foods and even to cook a bowl of soup.
The reason why I chose frying pan as my sketching object is because of I use it
every time when I cook. For me, frying pan is very useful and convenient to use in
cooking.
It is important to use the appropriate drawing equipment while sketching, such
as sketch book, art eraser and pencils. HB and 2B pencils are mostly suggested to
use for sketching the frying pan. The HB pencil can be used to draw at the light part
2. while the 2B pencil is to use for sketching the shading part of the frying pan.
Furthermore, an art eraser helps to improve the effect in shading which also makes
the sketch to stay in clean condition. As a reminder, do not use normal eraser
because it will mess up your sketch easily. A large desk, clean workspace and a
quite surroundings is the essential for me to sketch every time. It is important to
produce your sketch with a clear mind or else the details of the drawing subject will
be oversight or neglected.
Firstly, I placed the frying pan on a dining table and make sure the
background does not look complicated. Having one source of light is important in
sketching especially with a lamp because it produces more shadow. In order to
execute my sketch with meticulous attention to detail, I have observed the frying pan
for about 5 minutes and starting to notice the position, shading and patterns. I started
my sketch with some shapes that I observed in the object, such as circles or
rectangles of the frying pan and slowly the primary shape came out. By using the HB
pencil, I draw light lines to divide the object equally. I used the pencil softly at the
beginning of the sketch so it will be easier for me to erase if there is any correction to
be made. I started to darken the lineament of the curve once the entire object have
been drawn lightly. After all of the basic shapes and lines have drawn, it is time to
add the drawing details. Shading part of the sketch is very important and it must be
done properly. Then, I used a 2B pencil and started to shade my frying pan, inside
the curve and the round area. Shadows that present on the frying pan should
depends on the direction of the light source. At last, I draw further details of the frying
pan.
Sketching a frying pan spent me one hour because the shading and curve
area is the hardest part to draw. Satisfaction comes deep from my heart once I have
3. completed my sketch. It is an interesting experience to me and I have learnt most of
the sketching technique. After experiencing the sketching, I am willing to try and
sketch other things in my daily life, such as car, building and more. Thank you for my
lecturer Miss. Cassie because I believed that this will helps me a lot in my future as
becoming an architect.
