Energy is the ability to do work. It exists in two basic states: kinetic energy and potential energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion and depends on an object's mass and speed, while potential energy is stored energy that depends on an object's position or composition. Energy can also exist in various forms including thermal, chemical, nuclear, mechanical, sound, light, electric, and others. Energy is constantly changing forms through transformations but can neither be created nor destroyed according to the law of conservation of energy. Non-renewable resources like fossil fuels are being used faster than the Earth can produce them, while renewable resources like solar and wind are replenished naturally.
