Bronchodilators are medications that work by stimulating beta-2 receptor sites to relax airway smooth muscle, dilate the airways, and lower resistance to airflow, helping to decrease respiratory effort. Common bronchodilators include albuterol, metaproterenol, isoetharine, bitolterol mesylate, and salmeterol xinafoate, which are supplied in metered-dose inhalers or nebulizers to treat shortness of breath, wheezing, and other symptoms in patients who are not at their maximum medication dose from their personal inhaler.
