Bronchoconstrictor Drugs
1. BRONCHO CONSTRICTORS
PREPARED BY:
USHA RANI KANDULA,
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR,
DEPARTMENT OF ADULT HEALTH NURSING,
ARSI UNIVERSITY,ASELLA,ETHIOPIA,
SOUTH EAST AFRICA.
2. DEFINITION
The beta 2 receptors, which are
located in the bronchioles of the
lungs, thus reducing bronchodilation
and produce bronchoconstriction
and asthma in susceptible people.
Bronchoconnstriction is produced as
a side effect of many drugs.
5. PROPRANOLOL
Propranolol is a non-selective beta
blocker, which blocks the action of
epinephrine on both beta1 and beta
II adrenergic receptors.
6. PROPRANOLOL MOA
Propranolol is rapidly and completely
absorbeb with peak plasma levels
achieved approximately 1-3 hours
after ingestion.
It dimnishes cardiac output, having
both negative and chronotropic
effects.
7. Blocking beta II receptors in the
lungs of susceptible patients causes
contraction of the bronchiolar
smooth muscles.
This can precipitate a respiratory
crisis in patients with COPD or
asthma.
8. DOSE
Orally : 10-90 mg
IV: A concentration of 1mg/ml
It also available in capsules as
80,120 or 160mg.
10. Nadolol
Nadolol is a non-selective beta
blocker used in the treatment of high
blood pressure, migraine headache
and chest pain.
11. NADOLOL MOA
Nadolol is a beta-specific
sympatholytic, which non-selectively
blocks beta I adrenergic receptors,
which located in the heart, inhibiting
the effects of the catecholamines,
epinephrine and norepinephrine and
decrease the heart rate and blood
pressure.
16. Timolol maleate is a non-selective
beta-adrenergic receptor blocker.
It is used to treat high blood
pressure and prevent heart attacks
and prevent migraine headaches.
18. Nursing responsibilities
Assess the client for signs of
coronary artery disease and ask the
client to describe his/her anginal
attacks.
Inquire about the clients use of beta
blockers or other medications to
relieve the pain.
19. Check the patient pulse rate before
administration of beta blocker may slow
the sinus rate and produce bradycardia.
Monitor the clients blood pressure for
hypotension.
Monitor for hypoglycemia.
Evaluate therapeutic effect of the
medication.
