An electricity meter measures the amount of electric energy consumed by residences and businesses. It measures consumption in kilowatt-hours and bills are based on the difference between consecutive readings. There are four main types of meters: flat-rate meters that record total usage; interval meters that record usage in half-hour intervals; smart meters that digitally record usage and when energy is consumed; and solar meters that track net consumption and power going to and from the grid. Materials used in meter installation include meter boxes, conduit, clamps, fittings, circuit breakers, electrical boxes, and service entrance wire.

3. An electricity meter or electric meter,
electrical meter, or energy meter is a device
that measures the amount of electric energy
consumed by a residence, business, or
electrically powered devices. It measures
electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours
(kwh). Your billing will be based on the
differences between two consecutive
readings, by subtracting the most recent with
the previous one.

4. Types of Electric Meter
Currently, there are four types of
electrical meter available in the
market. Most of us have the
traditional type of reader, known as
accumulation meter or flat-rate
meter.

5. Electricity Flat-Rate Meter
Also known as an
‘accumulation meter’,
this type of meter
records the electricity
consumption since
the meter is first
installed.

6. Electricity Interval Meter
Record data electronically.
They are called 'interval
meters' as they can record
energy usage in half-hour
intervals.
They often have a digital
display.

7. Electricity Smart Meter
Smart meters measure the
energy digitally and can
calculate not only the
amount of electricity used,
but when this energy is
consumed, it contains a
communication chip that
sends meter reading data by
radio signal to a mobile
collector.

9. There are three (3) meters available for solar
meter. These are net meters, bi-directional
meters, and dual meters.
Net meters show the net consumption. Bi-
directional meters have three (3) screens: first is
test screen, second shows power coming into
the grid, and the third shows power going out to
the grid from the solar meter. The dual meter
has separate meters: first is usage meter and
the second is production or generation meter.

It is a

It is usually
fabricated of steel,

the pipes to be safely
attached to walls or
ceilings, so that the
wiring is kept out of
harm’s way.

connect one piece of
conduit to another or

an electrical box.

It is an automatically
operated electrical
switch designed to
protect an electrical
circuit from damage
caused by excess
current from an
overload or short
circuit.

17. Electrical Box
It has to be attached
outside the home.
Regulation was
imposed by the fire
department so that that
they can quickly shut off
all the electricity in the
house in case of fire.

18. Service Entrance Wire
It should have a minimum
of 8.00 mm2 size of copper
wire, color-coded with the
protective ground color of
green or green with a
yellow stripe. The neutral is
white, the hot (live or
active) single-phase wires
are black, and red in the
case of a second hot wire.
