10
ROLE OF LED
REV LED
* Indicates reverse flow of
Energy
•Reasons
*Incorrect wiring
*Use of un isolated
*Generator/ Inverters
11
ROLE OF LED
EL
•Due to ‘unbalanced’ Curren
• Needs Attention
12
ROLE OF LED
N- Cut
•Indicates current without
voltage on Meter
• Contact discom
immediately
13
The glowing of the EL LED indicates the following:
Earth is being used as neutral.
Neutral is touching the earth.
Phase / Neutral wire is touching with
phase / neutral wire of the neighbour
Neutral wire is interconnected with the
neighbors neutral wire.
KNOW ABOUT EL
14
Wrong wiring, among others things can
result in:
Safety hazards (wires are still live, even
when the main switch is off).
Cause fire (if by mistake, phase and neutral
wires get interchanged)
Wrong Current flow (neighbours current
can flow through your meter)
KNOW ABOUT EL
15
Good electronic meters
have Current sensors in
both the
Phase path, and Neutral
path
For Measurement, it
chooses higher * of the
two current.
* In general Phase, current is used for measurement. However
if neutral Current varies by more than 10~ 12 % then Neutral
current selected
16
Electro-mechanical
Meter has Current
sensor only on one wire
All Measurement based on
phase wire current even
when connected to neutral.
17
Good electronic meters
have Current sensors in
both the
Phase path, and Neutral
path
This is an advantage of
electronic meters over
electromechanical meters
Never buy electronic meters without this feature
But neutral looping may cause the meter to “run extra”
18
If EL is glowing, get your internal wiring checked for any
leakages and other problems and also carefully look at
the EL LED in the Electronic Meters. EL LED, in
Electronic Meters, however small, is of great
importance and consumers are advised not to
ignore its usefulness.

Wiring Defect
Step-1.
If number of meters in one premise
is only one, then there is
no common Neutral problem.
41
Step-2. Load On
Check I phase & I neutral
If I neutral = 0
Earth is used.

42
Step-3.
If Neutral removed from MCB is still
load working, then it is a wiring problem.
If the total MCB is off and the load is
still working, then both wire are being
shared
43
Step-4.
At MCB
If Phase is Off, then EL Off
Means Neutral-Earth Problem.
Step-5.
If neighbour Phase Off
Then EL Off ,
Means Common wire.

Then Earth not touching Neutral
Step-7.
If common wire
Disconnect one by one Neutral Ckt.
From Bus-bar & see if EL off.
46
Step-8.
Once Ckt. Identified then repair
The defect.
Step-9.
Once again check all current.
