Interactive Film: Immersion in Learning
There is plenty of research about the increasing use of video to engage learners and drive performance. The thirst for video content is effectively shown in some startling stats: YouTube is the second-most used search engine with over 1 billion-plus unique users every month; and online video is forecast to account for 60 percent of all web data by 2020.
When video is the most popular, shareable form of media content, how can you explore the learning opportunities the technology affords?

OLC13 704 From Storytelling to Immersive SimulationDebbie Richards
Storytelling has changed through immersive simulations. Simulations allow the audience to interact with the story instead of just passively taking in the story. They allow the audience to be a part of the story and become the storyteller as well. You’ll discuss the basics of storytelling and how it can be adapted to immersive simulations. You’ll explore storyboard examples, techniques and technology-based tools used to create immersive simulations.
Conference presentations are the moment to share your results, and to connect with researchers about future directions. However, presentations are often created as an afterthought and as a result they are often not as exciting as they could be.
In this slidedeck Felienne Hermans shares hands-on techniques to engage an audience.
The talk covers the entire spectrum of presenting: we start with advice on how to structure a talk and how to incorporate a core message into it. Once we have addressed the right structure for a talk, we will work on adding stories and arcs of tension to your presentation. Finally, to really perform as a presenter, we will talk about how slide design and body language can support your presentation.
It is relatively easy to design learning activities that tick the boxes for quality standards. For example, the links all work; active learning elements are included and so on. However, one question that is often neglected is ‘Will the students actually find this learning activity engaging?’. In his book, ‘Brain Rules’, John Medina lists 12 principles for surviving and thriving at work, home, and school. Rule #4 states that ‘We don’t pay attention to boring things’. Unfortunately, there are many examples of online learning that would be considered boring. This presentation will look at tools and techniques for designing engaging and effective online learning experiences.
