Essay on Early Childhood Education and its Impact on...
Early Childhood Education and its Impact on Technology
Early childhood education is a time where young children develop important learning skills. Young
children, aged birth through approximately 8 years (young children, 2004) interact with one
another to develop social and even motor skills that they will carry with them later in life.
Development in young children involves the early years in a child s physical, social emotional,
language, and cognitive development (Baur, 1998).
Developmental aspects can be assessed by technology. Technology is growing everyday in our
society, it is becoming a big factor in the use of early childhood education.

Developmental areas include social and emotional, language, motor, cognition, and in addition a
child will make approaches towards learning as well (Davis, 1998). Language development is very
important during this time and computers help since children are exposed to them for reading and
writing purposes. Also, it gives opportunities for them to be motivated to interact with other
children if they are in groups. Research has shown that computer play encourages longer more
complex speech and development of fluency (Baur, 1998). Cognitively, technology use is
connected to children and the use of it can lead to greater motivation and self direction.
Development is very important socially, and placing children in groups or pairs helps interaction
between their peers. This helps increased levels of spoken communication and cooperation that
were demonstrated in a study.
Study of five and six year olds and how they learned in a computer enrich environment
Learning development during early childhood education is very critical. How children learn is
also very important and looked at by many researchers. A study was recently performed to look
at how kindergartener s learn in a computer classroom setting. The study was to explore children
s peer dynamics in a seven week learning experience for two hours per day in a computer based
technology rich classroom. The study was performed with nine boys and nine girls from ages five to

Classroom Self-Regulations
пѓ Self regulations: o This video link and chapter 2 are established the same content. Both talk
about the self regulation. Self regulation means children follow the planning and focus on the
attention. Children can easily follow the rules themselves. Self regulation is the ability to control
one s emotion, actions (impulsivity), and thinking (focusing attention and planning) (Bullard, Page
27). This was seen in the video, educator described the whole day planning like thumb walk, stretch
work, sun dance etc. Every student followed the plan, and they are doing the stretch walk and yoga.
пѓ Developing a classroom community: o This video link and chapter 2 are talking about the same
points of developing a classroom community. Developing a classroom community means every
student shares their feeling with each other as well as they interact with each other as a family
members. when there is a sense of community, there is an emotional connection among members
(Bullard, Page 31). This was seen in the video, when educators arranged the morning meeting,
children shared their weekend story, and they listen the story each other. At that time, educator told
that morning meeting is their family time.

Educator tries to children interact with each other. When one child talks with the others, other
classmates respect him. However, we need to make sure the techniques we are using are consistent
with the respectful way that we want the children to interact with others (Bullard, Page 40). This

O Brother Where Art Thou
Timothy O Grady English 101 April 12, 2008 Film Analysis O Brother Where Art Thou This old
time musical theatrical movie clip was an insightful blast from the past that made you cherish
those days where it was inconceivable to not be a gentlemen, and it was a down right shame to
be anything less then an honest women. This old time movie with a new age attitude definitely
strikes the funny bone of any modern day movie watcher. The opening titles inform us that the
Coen Brothers O Brother, Where Art Thou is based on Homer s The Odyssey. The Coens claimed
their Fargo was based on a true story, but later confided it wasn t; this time they confess they haven

Here is where you meet the leader of the inmate s chain gang, his stoic like expressions and
inferior position gives you the sense that he believes he is in a godlike position. Luckily for our
heroes, they continuously escape his clutches safely and their battle for the treasure continues.
Our next character introduction takes place at the cross roads on a lonely dirt road, here is
where you meet a colored boy by the name of Tommy, who sold his soul to the devil for the gift
of guitar playing. The introduction of Tommy is really the first glimpse where you hear these
backyard country boys sing; they have the voice of angles and they form a musical group called
the Soggy Bottom Boys. This music group sings with a melody that gently touches your heart
and speaks to your soul. Unbeknownst to our characters this newly formed group is really a
treasure that will pay off big in the end. One of the biggest turning points in the movie is when
all the characters are in the woods and a multitude of Jesus believers join together for a good old
fashion baptism. This scene is particularly important because here is where Pete and Delmar
miraculously change their ways, for they have been saved by the grace of God. This scene makes
most movie watchers get the feeling of a religious based movie. After this point if you pay close

Children With ADHD In Elementary Schools
As a teacher of elementary school you work with all different types of children. Some children
are very advanced and excel in their work and others take longer to catch on and comprehend the
curriculum being taught. Children with ADHD sometimes get labeled as not being very intelligent
but in most children with ADHD that is not the case in fact these types of kids tend to be very
bright. Their problem does not lie with lack of intelligence but with being able to sit still and focus
long enough to be taught something. Now as a teacher of elementary schoolyou are working with
young children that already have very short attention spans so just because a child has a hard time
sitting still for an hour doesn t automatically make them have ADHD. But difficulty sitting still
and paying attention during class would definitely be something to look for. When trying to
figure out if a child in your class has ADHD verses than a lack of discipline there are some signs
you can look for. First would be that the child never seems to be able to finish anything; such as

A proper way to go about telling parents that they have an ADHD child is to first schedule a
meeting. Set them down and tell them that you have some concerns that their child is not able to
learn at their full potential because of their lack of focus and discipline in the classroom which is
causing poor grades. Ask them if their child at home shows the same warning signs such as
excessive talking, having to have what they want now, unable to follow directions, and never
finishing what they start. If so talk about ways to improve their behavior such as giving the child
extra time on assignments and tests, during tests and homework time move them to a quiet place
possibly a different room, and in extreme cases talk about ADHD

Employee Compensation and Corporate Culture- What Works

Employee Compensation and Corporate Culture: What Works?
When determining what method to use to compensate employees, a company must be aware of the
impact that different compensation methods can have on employee performance, and on
organizational culture. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all answer to the question of
employee compensation. Some employees will respond very well to a program that other
employees might balk at. Similarly, some companies or industries may flourish under one sort of
compensation scheme, while others are more successful with different schemes. This paper will
examine the various methods of compensation, and will speculate on what it is about compensation
that acts as a motivator for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another potential issue that prevents performance based compensation from being completely
effective is the method of implementation. What performance an employee is being compensated
for is just as important as (if not more important than) the fact the he is being compensated for
performance. If an employee is being compensated for sales he makes, he may find himself
cutting corners or ignoring rules to make sales that he ought not to make. Ho et al use Sears as
an example of this phenomenon. In 1992, Sears ended a policy of performance based
compensation that had failed miserably, because auto repair salespeople had performed $15
million dollars of unnecessary services for which Sears was ultimately forced to refund payment,
or pay other settlement costs. The issue was that Sears was paying their salespeople based on the
number of sales they made, thus giving them a motivation to perform unnecessary services, despite
the fact that this would cause the company in incur long run costs. Thus, performance based pay is
not necessarily a good thing, especially if it is linked to an aspect of performance that may not
directly relate to overall company performance. One might try to learn a lesson from this example
and determine that employees should

Mass Hysteria In The Tucible And The Crucible
Have you ever been accused of something you didn t do? Well, in The Crucible, a lot of people
were accused of something that they didn t do. Then it becomes a game that everyone blames one
another for their own selfish needs. In the story, things got complicated and when everyone
noticed, it was too late. A lot of people died and no one could stop it anymore. Even after everyone
noticed, they couldn t do anything against the judges. The Crucible is an good example of mass
hysteriaalong with the events in The Halifax Slasher. They both show similar events but are
different because of their setting in history. In the events of The Halifax Slasher, there was a
mysterious killer roaming the streets of Halifax, England. A few girls were attacked but they all
survived and reported it to the police. There was a case held to find out who was the attacker but
another person was attacked and the news spread around fast since it was a small town.
Eventually, there was men out on the street to try to stop the Halifax Slasher because there was a
reward for finding the attacker. The men on the street would beat anyone that looked out of place
because they would assume that the person would be the attacker. Which made it more dangerous
to be on the streets at night. But the Halifax police needed help, so they called in the Scotland
Yard. Then one of the couriers of the Halifax Couriers said Halifax has certainly never had such a
manhunt in its history and the hunt generally is probably

Passing Essay
The Root of Jealousy
In Nella Larsen s Passing, Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry show us a great deal about race and
sexuality in the 1920s. Both are extremely light skinned women of African American descent.
However similar they appear to be, their views on race, a very controversial issue at the time, differ
significantly. Clare chooses to use her physical appearance as an advantage in America s racist and
sexist society, leaving behind everything that connects her to her African American identity. She
presents herself as an object of sexual desire, flaunting herself to gain attention. Irene is practically
the opposite, deciding that she wants to remain with the label of being black. She is subtle with her

When Irene finally realizes that this woman is Clare, someone who chooses to pass and hide all
traces of her black heritage, Irene s opinion of her changes. She no longer wants to be involved
with Clare in any way, and had no desire or intention of making the slightest effort about
Tuesday. Nor any other day for that matter. She was through with Clare Kendry. (p. 31) Irene is
appalled that someone can so easily throw away her background just for the sake of gaining
privilege over another race. When Clare asks her if she had ever thought of passing, Irene
replies, No. Why should I? You see, Clare, I ve everything I want. (p. 28) She is happy with what
she has, not even having to give up anything to get there. Or at least that s what she convinces
herself to believe. Irene is again hypocritical in her beliefs. Even when she opposes Clare s view
of passing, she is still very interested in the idea. The truth was, she was curious. There were
things she wanted to ask Clare Kendry. She wished to find out about this hazardous business of
passing ... (p. 24) She even admitted that she held for her a fascination, strange and compelling.
(p. 28) Irene doesn t seem to be able to decide if she accepts passing as reasonable. She forces
herself to disagree with passing, allowing her to hate Clare for doing it. This shows us that
sexuality and race are two matters that conflict with each other, at least in Irene s opinion. She uses
race to

that circumnavigated the world, not once but twice within a two year period. While the general

My Views Of Marriage, Family, And Personal Life
At the beginning of the semester we learned the basis of what makes Christianity, the Trinity.
After reviewing and understanding the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost we looked at how
each three of these entities were reflected in the relationships of mankind; from marriage, to
family, to vocation. With a deeper understanding of these concepts I have had an alteration and
growth in my worldview in the way in which I should be living my life. In this paper I will discuss
deciphering my calling, my views of marriage, family, and personal life direct my thought process.
I will also discuss how they are being implemented in a way that allows me to share the teachings
of the Lord with others in my daily life. As mentioned in the previous lecture we are all born for a
purpose, and this purpose is considered to be our calling. There are basic callings that we all have
as Christians, such as getting married, starting a family, and pronouncing our faith in Jesus. But
there are callings that are specific to each one of us, one of which is our choice of employment.
When it comes to obtaining a career it is important that you choose the one Godhas established for
you not what you have set for yourself; I can personally attest to this. Growing up I planned to be
a specialized pediatric surgeon, mainly because my parents directed down the path to become a
doctor. After completing three years at the University of Alabama, obtaining a degree in Biology

The US Economy
The United States is currently experiencing a slow recovery from the recession of 2008 09. The
current unemployment rate is 7.7%, which is the lowest level since December of 2008 (BLS,
2012). However, this rate is believed to higher than the rate that would occur if the economy was
operating at peak efficiency, and it is also believed that there are structural issues still
underpinning this performance. For example, the number of Americans who have exited the
work force as the result of prolonged unemployment is believed to be higher than usual. In
addition, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO, 2012) notes that long term unemployment of
greater than 26 weeks is at a much higher rate than normal, which will have adverse long run
effects on the economy, since workers with long term unemployment often find their career
paths derailed. The current rate of GDP growth, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis,
is 2.7% (for Q3), and it was 1.3% in Q2 of this year. This rate reflects relatively slow growth, with
challenges remaining in the domestic market and with sluggishness in Europe suppressing exports
to that region. The rate of GDP growth is predicted to slow to a decline of 0.5% between Q4 2012
and Q4 2013, the US re entering recession, according to the Congressional Budget Office s
projections. These projections are based on the provisions of the Budget Control Act being enacted,
though any observers are doubtful that this will occur. Inflation, the third major

Compare and Contrast Union and Confederacy in Civil War Essay
The challenges that the Union and the Confederacy faced during the Civil War were very
different. Critical weaknesses that seemed unfit for war, plagued the opposing American forces,
and would serve to be a continuous obstacle that would need to be conquered by patriotism of the
people, for their opposing views. To allow for both sides to be competitive, the efforts put forth had
to mold to the varied needs of the armies by both the civilian population and their militaries. To the
people in the south the similarity to the colonists in the Revolutionary War, was assimilated to their
separatist cause in the Civil War and would be their drive to compete with the dominating Northern
states. This mindset started the Confederacy in the Civil... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was well believed until Jackson s forces began unloading rounds on the Union army stopping
McDowell s forces from advancing, holding the line like a stone wall. As the new Union recruits

that this war was not going to be easily won.
The southern states although far less populated and without initial means to manufacture war
supplies did have the strengths to be very competitive. Strong, experienced Confederate
leadership in their practiced military, and the overall will power to protect their way of life
would prove to be their greatest assets. Jefferson Davis became the president of the Confederacy

Essay on Voodoo Religion
Voodoo Religion The Voodoo religion is one of the most, if not the most misconceived religions
of our time. Often when Voodoo is mentioned, it is related to evil, black magic, devious sorcery,
cannibalism, and harm. Although the Voodoo religion appears to the outsider as an illusion or
falsehood, it has been an instrumental political force because it has helped the Haitians resist
domination and form an identity of their own. Since the end of the 17th century, Haitian Voodoo
has overcome every challenge it has been faced with and has endured. The religion is based on a

Voodoo remains adaptable as it has been throughout history, it is constantly changing to adapt to
new situations that Haiti is faced with everyday. After Haiti gained its independence it was ruled
by one dictator after another. From 1860 until the present day, Haitian politics were never stable.
During this period Haiti had thirty five presidents, only five of them completed their terms.
Through all of Haiti s political failure Voodoo has helped to resist domination, fight
fragmentation of identity, with which the Haitians were constantly threatened, and avoid
catholic conversion. Many of today s religions share strict beliefs that are found only within
their own religion, they restrict the possibility to believe anything other that what the religion
tells its followers to believe, in Voodoo you are not a follower. Voodoo is a religion influenced
by many other religions; it allows its followers to feel free. When Voodoo worshipers left Africa
and reached the far away island of Haiti, the Voodoo religion changed. Catholicism of the slave

incorporated these other religions because of its welcoming nature. Voodoo was appealing,
especially to the slaves and poor members of a community. Because it was so inviting, it became a
way for people with troubles and turmoil to unite. The slaves united through Voodoo to throw off

Macbeth Imagery Blood
Blood Imagery in Macbeth
Shakespeare s plays are well known for the richness of their imagery. This is particularly true in
Macbeth and the many allusions to blood. The use of blood imagery gives the reader some
foresight into what is going on in the play and how the characters are thinking and feeling. Blood
is used to represent heroics on the battlefield, evil and murderous inclinations, and ultimately guilt
and shame. Shakespeare uses the symbol of blood to give the readers insight into his characters
as they change and are impacted by their choices and actions. This paper will demonstrate how
Shakespeare uses the image of blood as a symbol of bravery, guilt and evil citing directly from the

Through the looking glass Macbeth seems as bloody as he could be, yet at the core he feels
unruly guilt Like a child, Macbeth attempts to run away from his problems, yet he has no where

In the beginning of the play blood is represented of honor and bravery and symbolizes good and

Polio Summary
Polio was a deadly disease that struck the United States hard with various epidemic breakouts
throughout the country. There are many books written about the disease and how it was
controlled. Polio is a well researched topic in today s medical world but in this book, Heather
Green Wooten, takes it one step further. She placed the focus of the book in the south, a place
where the disease struck almost last yet it claimed many lives. It specifies on the state of Texas. In
addition to that, she combined the disease epidemic with the social and economic development of
the state in the twentieth century. The book follows a well organized chronological order stating

The purpose of the chapter is to provide the readers with some background information. Along
with this, it also shows how panic overtook the American communities. The uncertainty of what
the virus was or where it came from caused a paranoia in many cities. The initial reaction was to
quarantine victims and keep them away from the general public. The spread of the epidemic
from northern states to Texas is accredited, according to Wooten, by the mass immigration into
Texas by residents of other states during the oil industry s boom in Texas in the early twentieth
century. This exposed many people to polio as they moved into cities and the coastal area of
Texas became more and more urbanized. The high standards of American hygene made polio a
death threat. The body did not have the ability of fighting a small dose of the disease as new
born did when hygene in the country was not so clean. By not being exposed to the virus the
body did not produce the adequate antibodies to fight it off. When it struck at a later age the body
was defenseless and so the epidemic started. The result of the urbanization of Texas and the many
polio outbreaks helped the area create many hospitals and lead the fight against polio. The book
also highlights the life of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who also suffered of polio. Wooten describes how

The Origins and History of Corn
Indigenous to the Western hemisphere, corn has traveled all around the world being the center of
religious practices, cuisine, and today drives food production, but the exact origin of this miracle
vegetable is uncertain. Reported by National Geographic s David Braun, corn was developed and
cultivated somewhere in central Mexicoover 8,700 years ago. Maize, another name for corn, was
not found naturally in the wild, but came about due to the domestication of a variety of similar
species from the ancient Native Americans. Corn derived from the teosinte plant, which is a wild
grass containing kernels smaller than modern day corn. According to an article in The New York
Times, during the 20th century few scientists could confirm the relation between teosinte and corn,
but in the 1930 s, Dr. George W. Beadle conducted many genetic experiments with the two plants
and discovered that they had very similar chromosomes. Beadle concluded that the two plants were
members of the same species, with maize being the domesticated form of teosinte (Carroll).
Native Americans that migrated from Mexico brought along corn to various parts of America.
Therefore, maize dispersed into the southwestern regions of the United States and to Peru. In
addition to this agricultural migration, corn managed to make its way across the Atlantic Ocean to
Europe. In an article written by Lance Gibson and Garren Benson of Iowa State University s
Department of Agronomy, corn was introduced to Europeans during

We Should Not Take Technology And Computer s Usefulness...
We should not take technology and computer s usefulness for granted. Billions of people use
computers every day, yet only a fraction have the patience to understand what they are doing. Or,
the actual consequences of their actions and in turn cause problems for themselves and others. As a
result the same precautions that are made to protect themselves are not applied when using a
computer. More people need to treat these computers as tools that can be used to make our lives
and the world better even if the world is changing, for better or worse. As such, people must
learn what a computer is to recognize it, what these computers need to stay maintained, and how,
as an individual, people must take control of their technology to bring themselves into the
modern world. Computers are defined in the Webster dictionary as a programmable usually
electronic device that can store, retrieve, and process data. These could be anything from as
small as calculators to cabinets the size of buildings. They are well established into the daily
lives of most of the people in the world, if you tried to avoid computers entirely you would find it
difficult when your food is packaged with computers, cars are ran with computers, odds are even
your refrigerator has a computer in it. Check your food packaging, most of the time there is a
barcode on it. That means that the package had to be scanned by computers many times before it
reached your shelves. Even though computers have

The Importance Of Communication As An Effective Communication
Directors it is important that it is done so in a formal manner. Any information that is given to them
must be based on factual evidence rather than just opinion. This means when making
recommendations, evidence needs to be given to support it, whether this be by including changes to
statutory, local authorities or governing bodies requirements for the running of the home. Evidence
may also be submitted in the form of a report formulated by myself, which would include different
research methodologies to support my findings. Communicationis largely face to face, or via email.
Sales Representatives
Contact with sales representatives always warrants formal communication. This is because they are
often precursors to a business contract occurring. It is therefore important that communication is
clear and there is full understanding by both parties.
1.2 EXPLAIN HOW TO SUPPORT EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION WITHIN OWN JOB

Katz (1955) suggests that what he refers to as human skills determine how effectively we are able
to work with people. Communication is an essential factor in achieving this. Skills for Care (2006)
also identified communication as an important factor in effective leadership and management.
Due to the fact that I perform a number of job roles, mostly at management level (as identified
above), direction of communication is an important factor. When I am communicating with senior

Essay Remember the Titans Rhetorical Analysis
Multicolored Dream In the movie Remember the Titans Coach Boone gives a speech on the
battle ground of Gettysburg. Coach Boone was hired and made head coach over the nominated
Hall of Fame Coach Yoast. Racial tensions were building between team members because their
school, T.C. Williams became integrated. His team of football players had a problem with open
prejudice and hostility between the black and white players. After a day of bad practice, Coach
Boone took his team out for a run in the middle of the night through the forest to deal with the
issue. When the players were finally given a chance to breathe they realized that they were at the

The strong imagery paints a picture of the battlefield and draws a connection between the past
and present leaving the football players with a feeling of loss. In the beginning of the movie,
Coach Boone had to build ethos for himself because of racial differences. Coach Boone, being of
African American descent, was hired over their current caucasian coach and this caused the
white football players to boycott the team until Coach Yoast became their assistant coach. Coach
Boone lead his team by example and his dedication to his craft. He showed the players that he
did not care about what color you wore on your skin, but of the sport that brought them together.
During his speech he states I don t care if you like each other or not. But you will respect each
other. And maybe, I don t know, maybe we ll learn to play this game like men (Boone). He uses
the built trust aspect of ethos very well to close this speech. Another aspect of ethos Coach
Boone used in his speech was borrowed credibility from Gettysburg. Towards the end of the
speech he told the boys to take a lesson from the dead (Boone) and realize that if they do not stop
these actions of hostility towards each other they will not be able to move forward as a team. The
Civil War, and the Civil Rights Movement were turning points in American history and he used
facts about the battle to build his ethos. Racial differences were still strong during the 1970s and if

George And Lennie Relationship Analysis
In the novella Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck, the relationship between Lennie Small and
George Milton is complex. Lennie and George are two companions who look for work and brave
the hardships of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression together. Although Lennie and George
are both grown men, their relationship resembles more of a child and a single parent, or a boy and
his dog. Lennie is portrayed as animalistic and childish through his behavior and Steinbeck s
comparisons. This reveals the crucial power dynamic in George and Lennie s relationship. In the
beginning of the novella, Lennie is portrayed as innocent and dependent on George. When Lennie
had a mouse and George asked for it, Steinbeck describes Lennie s reaction... Show more content on

Burns continues by saying that unpropitious events occur, even in the lives of the everyday man.
Burns implies that the mouse should consider himself lucky because it cannot think about the
past; it only focuses on the present and the future, while men dwell on the past. Lennie and the
mouse have similar characteristics; just like the mouse, Lennie cannot remember the past. In
the novella, George gets frustrated with Lennie for always forgetting things. When Lennie
could not remember why they had left Weed and why they were going somewhere new, George
says ...[s]o you forgot already (4). In Steinbeck s Of Mice and Men, Lennie is a metaphor for the
mouse, and George a metaphor for men. George can look back on the past, which is why he
carries the responsibility of Lennie. Lennie is again given animalistic character traits. Steinbeck
does this to create a dynamic in Lennie and George s relationship, that of a man and animal. In
which George is the responsible one who looks out for Lennie. The parallels between Lennie and
George s relationship and the relationship that their workmate, Candy had with his dog reaffirm
the power dynamic between George and Lennie. In the novella, Candy must kill his dog because it
is old and weak. Candy felt such extreme regret when it came time to kill his dog, that instead of

Private capital investments have slowed, Russia s market environment is weakened by the
presence of a continued state run model, and a significant lever within the Russian economy
remains oil (Kudrin Gurvich, 2015, p.54). In 2015, Russia was a key exporter of oil to both
Europe and Asia, and nearly 50% of the country s revenue comes from oil and gas. That type of
dependence, when oil prices decline can have a massive negative effect on the economy of a nation
(Andrianova Khrennikova, 2016).
The economy of India is largely one that emphasizes service as the largest sector. Sixth largest by

economy is pharmaceuticals which were the fastest growing among the top 10 export categories,
up 51.7% for the 5 year period starting in 2011 (Workman, 2016). Of the five countries in BRICS,
India is lowest in GDP per capita. India continues to be an attractive foreign direct investment
nation, led primarily by economic reforms that have made entry into the country s marketplace
easier (Esposito, Kapoor, Mathur, 2016). Also significant in the economy of India is its size. This
causes significant differences across the nation both in terms of how the different states within the

02 November 2014 Importance of the Hunt in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight The hunt, in Sir
Gawain and the Green Knight, is used for more than just friendly competition. Sir Gawain and the
Green Knight, a Middle English poem, is a tale of honor, courtesy, and even romance. This tale is
engaging and it can completely captivate the reader. The reader may be so captivated by the tale
that they may miss the subtle symbolism used throughout the poem. Symbolism in the hunt are an

Elephants were the tanks of the ancient battlefield (Knodell, 2014). The mere sight, or smell, of
these beasts could cause the enemy to retreat. If the enemy did not retreat, however, the elephants

Examples Of Courage In The Hobbit

Social Lit.

Expanding Courage All we have to decide is what we do with the time that is given to us. There
are other forces at work in this world, besides the will of evil (Tolkien 304). Growth and courage
are both vital actions in life. One cannot hope to live and thrive without growing both internally
and externally, and having the courage to stand up for what one s beliefs. Courage is directly
affected by growth, for without growth, one will never obtain the courage to move on and push
forward when times get tough in life. Stepping out of one s comfort zone takes immense growth
and no small amount of courage, but can prove to be a pivotal moment within climactic events. In

Throughout the first chapters of The Hobbit, Bilbo is portrayed in this manner, but Tolkien
brilliantly changes Bilbo little by little to symbolize the importance of growing, maturing, and
finding courage to stand up for what is right. Another great example for the need of growth and
courage that Tolkien highlights in the early parts of his work The Hobbit, is showing how obsessed
Bilbo Baggins is with his possessions. Tell me Bilbo, when did doilies and your mother s dishes
become so important to you? The world is not in your books and maps. It s out there (Tolkien
17). Through this quote, Tolkien shows how self centered people become so involved with
themselves, they start to care too much for the things that matter least. Bilbo for example, has
no interest in his approaching journey, rather he is fussing over his dishes and cloths, casting
away the needs of others and the outside world. Much like Tolkien s famous character, so many
people are worried about just themselves. They have no interest in the outside would and their
growth stops and courage hinders. A person can be very well off but if they are so wrapped up
with their own affairs, and do not experience the world they cannot grow and mature. Without
growing and maturing, real world issues aren t addressed and communication becomes surreal. No
one knows how to address these issues and that just creates more anarchy. Real world experience is
key to growth. Growth is key to

Literary Devices In Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet Literary Analysis Essay Literary devices are reveal several details about
characters in stories, movies, plays, and other writings. Oxymorons are two opposites placed
right next to each other. A paradox is simply a oxymoron except seperated and placed in a
sentence. Lastly, a juxtaposition is contrasting two objects such as characters, places, and even
their actions. William Shakespeare successfully added all of these literary devices into his
famous play Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare indirectly revealed character traits for Romeo, Juliet,
and Friar Laurence by using all three of these literary devices. Shakespeare used the figurative
language to indirectly describe who Romeo is. Romeo and Mercutio argue with each other about
the importance of dreams (1.4.11 103). During Mercutio s Queen Mab speech, it reveals that
Romeo is a dreamer and Mercutio is not. This is a juxtaposition because Mercutio and Romeo
have two different mindsets on dreams. An example of Shakespeare using a oxymoron to indirectly

Juliet says, Come, night; come, Romeo, come thou day in night (3.2.17). She waits for Romeo
all day until night not knowing about the fight with Tybalt. As she speaks, this quote reveals that
Juliet is obsessive and passionate. She is explaining that Romeo is her sun and a necessity for
life. It is a paradox because it talks about day in night which are two opposites in a sentence.
Juliet tells the Nurse as she finds out Romeo is apart of the Montagues: My only love sprung
from my only hate (1.5.136). This clarified that she is a risk taker and very rebellious for still
wanting to love Romeo. Also, this is another paradox because her only love came from her only
hate which is two opposites in a sentence. For Friar Laurence, Shakespeare uses paradoxes and

Community In Chronicle Of A Death Foretold
Home is where the heart is, unless it is a small village in rural Colombia. In the case of the
villagers who populate Gabriel Garcia Marquez s Chronicle of a Death Foretold , the concept of
community triggers feelings of hostility, vengeance, and anger. As far as this town s culture goes,
family and religiontrump all: they drive the Vicario brothers to murder, and force the women of the
village to reach unrealistic standards under obscure guidelines. It seems no one is immune to the
strength of these shared beliefs and values. Even normal citizens fall victim to the opinion, their
negligence leaving them as much at fault for Santiago s murder as the very perpetrators themselves.
Such stringent social constructs evident in the village s society... Show more content on

It exists as the driving force behind Santiago s murder, suggesting that compassion is discarded
when honor and respect are at stake. To the people of the fictitious village, honor [is] a brittle value
one that cannot be rescued if harmed (Lipsett Rivera). Such a concept is illustrated through the
actions of the Vicario twins, who stab Santiago to death in cold blood over the honor of their
sister. Despite their open confession, both brothers still claim to be innocent under the idea their
crime was, before God and before men...a matter of honor (49). The religious connotation
intertwined with the act of killing suggests that exacting revenge is reverent, and therefore
necessary to keep true to their faith and code of honor. Furthermore, the parallel structure of the
phrase before God and before men furthers the link between faith and honor. By associating the
terms God and men with each other, Marquez reveals that the notion of humanity is based on
religious conviction. Thus, the only way to retain status as a good human is to follow religious
constructs, and in the case of the Vicario brothers, to kill. This idea is furthered in the aftermath of
the murder, when Marquez asserts that in killing Santiago, the brothers Vicario had proved their
status as men (80). As with religion, honor itself is constantly emphasized as a framework for social
hierarchy in the village. In killing Santiago, the brothers cemented not only their faith, but their
rank in society as

of nursing research and evidence based practice such as improved quality of practice and changes

Structured Work System
The research involved a primary and a secondary aim which were evaluated in two studies. The
primary aim of the study focused on structured teaching and its effects on 4 child behaviors
including, engagement, task completion, stereotypic behavior, and escape attempts in preschoolers
with disabilities. The secondary aim was to evaluate how graduated guidance was used in teaching
the children to use the structured work systems. There were a total of three preschool age
participants with developmental disabilities involved. In the first study two participants engaged in
three tasks in both a withdrawal design and in a structured work system. In the second study one

They mentioned the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped
CHildren program (TEACCH) and its model. It is stated that most of the TEACCH model has been
explored as a comprehensive program and some of its practices and individual components have
undergone little research. The two components that have been experimentally tested are visual
activity schedules and structured work systems. The authors build a research foundation by
introducing previous research on structured teaching. In a study conducted by MacDuff, Krantz,
and McClannahan in 1993 on structured work systems, demonstrated increased engagement and
decreased disruptive behaviors when utilizing visual schedules. The authors mention that several
investigators have received similar, positive results when testing the advantages of structured
learning. A study conducted by Hume and Odom in 2007 was detailed as well. Hume and Odom s
study used a withdrawal design to examine the effects of individual work systems on on task
behaviors, task completion, number of play materials used, and reduction of teacher prompts. They
concluded that individuals with autism could benefit from individual work systems. Finally, the
authors state their purpose of replicating Hume and Odoms s study in hopes of expanding what is

The Death Of A Sleeping Pill
Alternative Views: There are conflicting views on the use of stilnox as a sleeping aid and the
use of sleeping aids as the amount of people that have died as result of these drugs is slowly
increasing. In America, a study by Scribbs Health, a non profit organisation, estimates that,
500,000 excess deaths have been caused by taking drugs such as Ambien (American equivalent of
stilnox) and Restoril . These deaths are a result of two main factors, unconscious behaviours and
suicide. Commiting suicide using a sleeping pill is the preferred method for women as it causes the
metabolic pathways throughout the body to start shutting down. These systems include the
respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems and the result of such a widespread shut down is
death. The drug is attributed with certain behaviours that occur while being unconscious. It has
been reported by numerous patients that the drug results in sleep related behaviours such as,
sleepwalking and has resulted in many deaths. Stilnox however can be beneficial to those that are
effected by mental health issues and suffering from sleep deprivation. Sleep disturbance can be
caused by numerous variables however, a main cause can be hormonal imbalance. Stilnox binds to
receptors in the brain, which promotes drowsiness. In some cases it has also be found to improve
the quality of life of some people that have been diagnosed with different mental disabilities. After
administering the drug clear improvement can be seen

The Difference Between Dulce Et Decorum Est And Done With...
The poems Dulce et Decorum Est and Done with Bonaparte show what war is like. Dulce et
Decorum Est written by Wilfred Owen, is based on his experience during World War I. Owen was
born March 18, 1893 in Shropshire, England. In 1915, he decided to enlist in the Artists Rifles
group. He was then commissioned as second lieutenant. In 1917, he was diagnosed with shell shock
after he became injured during battle. He was sent to a hospital to recover and there he met
someone who taught him about poetry. During his time at the hospital, he wrote his famous poem
Dulce et Decorum Est. Owen died on November 4, 1918. The poem Done with Bonaparte gives a
soldiers perspective during the Napoleonic war. It was written by Mark Knopfler. He was born on
August 12, 1949 in Glasgow, England. Knopfler wrote and produced many albums and hit songs,
one of them was Done with Bonaparte. He is still alive to this day.... Show more content on

Picturing old beggars under sacks , tell us these men are battle weary, but also gives us a hint that
they are scared of what is ahead for them (Hughes). This critic s quote shows that Owen used a lot
of vivid imagery to portray the soldiers struggles. Owen shares his experience watching one of the
other soldiers die. There was a thick green light giving the image of the man drowning in a green
sea, . Watching this man [plunging] at me, guttering, choking, drowning, (Smith). After
experiencing such horrible event, he will have never ending nightmares about the soldier dying.
Owen shows through his writing that war is hell. Fighting during the war was a traumatizing

The Idea Of Women And Men Use Language Differently
Discuss the idea that Women and Men use Language differently.
The data on Table 1 shows that the men in the meeting had more turns but there was an exception
(woman D) and the men in the meeting generally spoke for longer per turn but again there was an
exception (woman B). Additionally men also interrupted more (except for man E), and men were
interrupted more except Man E and Man I, therefore there is no significant pattern in terms of
which gender was interrupted more.
Robin Lakoff found that women s language lacks authority when compared to that used by men
and she believes that women use many techniques in their speech that are deficient to men s
speech. In the Deficit Model Robin Lakoff describes male language as stronger, more prestigious
and more desirable. She argues that women are socialised into behaving like ladies . She gives
examples of language techniques women use that make their language seem deficient these include,
fillers, hedges e.g. sort of , you know , intensifiers e.g. so , weak expletive terms e.g. oh dear ,
empty adjectives e.g. charming, sweet, hypercorrect grammar and tag questions which shows
uncertainty e.g. isn t it? Moreover she interprets that women use more precise colour terms e.g.
mauve, magneta.
I agree that women use these techniques but they don t make women deficient to men. For
example, the use of intensifiers if someone says This chocolate is very tasty and another says This
chocolate is tasty . This doesn t make

Franklin High School Sports Narrative
It was finally game day for us freshman. Winter break just finished about two weeks ago and we
finally have a home game. This time it s against Franklin High School. I felt like this game was
going to be a good one. I knew I was going to go off. Going through the school day I had to stay
focused and put myself in the right mindset for the upcoming. I couldn t have any distractions.
Looking back, I was probably a little too serious. It was necessary, though, if I wanted to have a
good game. Once school finally ends, I get my basketball stuff and go straight to the locker room
to change. I put my uniform and sneakers on. I was Kobe getting ready for the first game of the
2010 NBA Finals against the Celtics. I was ready to ball out. After the Raiders and I finish
setting up all of the chairs and the table, where the stat keepers and score keepers sit, I get ready
to shoot around before the game. I look around and all I see is an empty court. Just looking at the
court fueled the excitement that I felt for this upcoming game. It was the type of excitement that
could only be satisfied once the game started. As the game drew closer, I could smell Franklin
coming... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We were killing the Scrubs and there was no need for me to even play anymore. Coach Shamy
put some new players in the game. It wasn t long before the game ended and we were shaking
hands with the other team. Franklin s coach patted me on my back. He knew I completely
dominated his team. When you looked at the scoreboard, it looked like a massacre took place at
the high school that day. We completely murdered the other team. It was fun though. All of the
hard work in practice paid off. And I had a great game as an added bonus. I realized that game,
that I just need to have fun when I m playing. That s one thing I learned that day; I play my best
when I m having fun. And, being the chef that I am, I definitely had fun filleting Franklin s whole
team that

Early Childhood Education and its Impact on Technology Early childhood education is a time where young children develop important learning skills. Young children, aged birth through approximately 8 years (young children, 2004) interact with one another to develop social and even motor skills that they will carry with them later in life. Development in young children involves the early years in a child s physical, social emotional, language, and cognitive development (Baur, 1998). Developmental aspects can be assessed by technology. Developmental areas include social and emotional, language, motor, cognition, and in addition a child will make approaches towards learning as well (Davis, 1998). Language development is very important during this time and computers help since children are exposed to them for reading and writing purposes. Also, it gives opportunities for them to be motivated to interact with other children if they are in groups. Research has shown that computer play encourages longer more complex speech and development of fluency (Baur, 1998). Cognitively, technology use is connected to children and the use of it can lead to greater motivation and self direction. Development is very important socially, and placing children in groups or pairs helps interaction between their peers. Self regulation means children follow the planning and focus on the attention. Children can easily follow the rules themselves. Here is where you meet the leader of the inmate s chain gang, his stoic like expressions and inferior position gives you the sense that he believes he is in a godlike position. Luckily for our heroes, they continuously escape his clutches safely and their battle for the treasure continues. Our next character introduction takes place at the cross roads on a lonely dirt road, here is where you meet a colored boy by the name of Tommy, who sold his soul to the devil for the gift of guitar playing. The introduction of Tommy is really the first glimpse where you hear these backyard country boys sing; they have the voice of angles and they form a musical group called the Soggy Bottom Boys. This music group sings with a melody that gently touches your heart and speaks to your soul. Unbeknownst to our characters this newly formed group is really a treasure that will pay off big in the end. One of the biggest turning points in the movie is when all the characters are in the woods and a multitude of Jesus believers join together for a good old fashion baptism. This scene is particularly important because here is where Pete and Delmar miraculously change their ways, for they have been saved by the grace of God. This scene makes most movie watchers get the feeling of a religious based movie. After this point if you pay close attention to the symbolism you can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some children are very advanced and excel in their work and others take longer to catch on and comprehend the curriculum being taught. Children with ADHD sometimes get labeled as not being very intelligent but in most children with ADHD that is not the case in fact these types of kids tend to be very bright. Their problem does not lie with lack of intelligence but with being able to sit still and focus long enough to be taught something. Now as a teacher of elementary schoolyou are working with young children that already have very short attention spans so just because a child has a hard time sitting still for an hour doesn t automatically make them have ADHD. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all answer to the question of employee compensation. Some employees will respond very well to a program that other employees might balk at. Similarly, some companies or industries may flourish under one sort of compensation scheme, while others are more successful with different schemes. This paper will examine the various methods of compensation, and will speculate on what it is about compensation that acts as a motivator for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another potential issue that prevents performance based compensation from being completely effective is the method of implementation. What performance an employee is being compensated for is just as important as (if not more important than) the fact the he is being compensated for performance. If an employee is being compensated for sales he makes, he may find himself cutting corners or ignoring rules to make sales that he ought not to make. Ho et al use Sears as an example of this phenomenon. In 1992, Sears ended a policy of performance based compensation that had failed miserably, because auto repair salespeople had performed $15 million dollars of unnecessary services for which Sears was ultimately forced to refund payment, or pay other settlement costs. The issue was that Sears was paying their salespeople based on the number of sales they made, thus giving them a motivation to perform unnecessary services, despite the fact that this would cause the company in incur long run costs. Thus, performance based pay is not necessarily a good thing, especially if it is linked to an aspect of performance that may not directly relate to overall company performance. One might try to learn a lesson from this example and determine that employees should ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A lot of people died and no one could stop it anymore. Even after everyone noticed, they couldn t do anything against the judges. The Crucible is an good example of mass hysteriaalong with the events in The Halifax Slasher. They both show similar events but are different because of their setting in history. In the events of The Halifax Slasher, there was a mysterious killer roaming the streets of Halifax, England. A few girls were attacked but they all survived and reported it to the police. There was a case held to find out who was the attacker but another person was attacked and the news spread around fast since it was a small town. Eventually, there was men out on the street to try to stop the Halifax Slasher because there was a reward for finding the attacker. The men on the street would beat anyone that looked out of place because they would assume that the person would be the attacker. Which made it more dangerous to be on the streets at night. • 8. Passing Essay The Root of Jealousy In Nella Larsen s Passing, Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry show us a great deal about race and sexuality in the 1920s. Both are extremely light skinned women of African American descent. However similar they appear to be, their views on race, a very controversial issue at the time, differ significantly. Clare chooses to use her physical appearance as an advantage in America s racist and sexist society, leaving behind everything that connects her to her African American identity. She was through with Clare Kendry. (p. 31) Irene is appalled that someone can so easily throw away her background just for the sake of gaining privilege over another race. When Clare asks her if she had ever thought of passing, Irene replies, No. Why should I? You see, Clare, I ve everything I want. (p. 28) She is happy with what she has, not even having to give up anything to get there. Or at least that s what she convinces herself to believe. Irene is again hypocritical in her beliefs. Even when she opposes Clare s view of passing, she is still very interested in the idea. The truth was, she was curious. There were things she wanted to ask Clare Kendry. She wished to find out about this hazardous business of passing ... (p. 24) She even admitted that she held for her a fascination, strange and compelling. (p. 28) Irene doesn t seem to be able to decide if she accepts passing as reasonable. She forces herself to disagree with passing, allowing her to hate Clare for doing it. With a deeper understanding of these concepts I have had an alteration and growth in my worldview in the way in which I should be living my life. In this paper I will discuss deciphering my calling, my views of marriage, family, and personal life direct my thought process. • 15. The US Economy The United States is currently experiencing a slow recovery from the recession of 2008 09. The current unemployment rate is 7.7%, which is the lowest level since December of 2008 (BLS, 2012). However, this rate is believed to higher than the rate that would occur if the economy was operating at peak efficiency, and it is also believed that there are structural issues still underpinning this performance. For example, the number of Americans who have exited the work force as the result of prolonged unemployment is believed to be higher than usual. In addition, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO, 2012) notes that long term unemployment of greater than 26 weeks is at a much higher rate than normal, which will have adverse long run effects on the economy, since workers with long term unemployment often find their career paths derailed. The current rate of GDP growth, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, is 2.7% (for Q3), and it was 1.3% in Q2 of this year. This rate reflects relatively slow growth, with challenges remaining in the domestic market and with sluggishness in Europe suppressing exports to that region. The rate of GDP growth is predicted to slow to a decline of 0.5% between Q4 2012 and Q4 2013, the US re entering recession, according to the Congressional Budget Office s projections. The uncertainty of what the virus was or where it came from caused a paranoia in many cities. The initial reaction was to quarantine victims and keep them away from the general public. The spread of the epidemic from northern states to Texas is accredited, according to Wooten, by the mass immigration into Texas by residents of other states during the oil industry s boom in Texas in the early twentieth century. This exposed many people to polio as they moved into cities and the coastal area of Texas became more and more urbanized. The high standards of American hygene made polio a death threat. The Origins and History of Corn Indigenous to the Western hemisphere, corn has traveled all around the world being the center of religious practices, cuisine, and today drives food production, but the exact origin of this miracle vegetable is uncertain. Reported by National Geographic s David Braun, corn was developed and cultivated somewhere in central Mexicoover 8,700 years ago. Maize, another name for corn, was not found naturally in the wild, but came about due to the domestication of a variety of similar species from the ancient Native Americans. Corn derived from the teosinte plant, which is a wild grass containing kernels smaller than modern day corn. According to an article in The New York Times, during the 20th century few scientists could confirm the relation between teosinte and corn, but in the 1930 s, Dr. George W. Beadle conducted many genetic experiments with the two plants and discovered that they had very similar chromosomes. Beadle concluded that the two plants were members of the same species, with maize being the domesticated form of teosinte (Carroll). Native Americans that migrated from Mexico brought along corn to various parts of America. Therefore, maize dispersed into the southwestern regions of the United States and to Peru. Lennie and George are two companions who look for work and brave the hardships of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression together. Although Lennie and George are both grown men, their relationship resembles more of a child and a single parent, or a boy and his dog. Lennie is portrayed as animalistic and childish through his behavior and Steinbeck s comparisons. This reveals the crucial power dynamic in George and Lennie s relationship. In which George is the responsible one who looks out for Lennie. The parallels between Lennie and George s relationship and the relationship that their workmate, Candy had with his dog reaffirm the power dynamic between George and Lennie. In the novella, Candy must kill his dog because it is old and weak. Candy felt such extreme regret when it came time to kill his dog, that instead of doing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are other forces at work in this world, besides the will of evil (Tolkien 304). Growth and courage are both vital actions in life. One cannot hope to live and thrive without growing both internally and externally, and having the courage to stand up for what one s beliefs. Courage is directly affected by growth, for without growth, one will never obtain the courage to move on and push forward when times get tough in life. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the first chapters of The Hobbit, Bilbo is portrayed in this manner, but Tolkien brilliantly changes Bilbo little by little to symbolize the importance of growing, maturing, and finding courage to stand up for what is right. Another great example for the need of growth and courage that Tolkien highlights in the early parts of his work The Hobbit, is showing how obsessed Bilbo Baggins is with his possessions. Tell me Bilbo, when did doilies and your mother s dishes become so important to you? The world is not in your books and maps. It s out there (Tolkien 17). Through this quote, Tolkien shows how self centered people become so involved with themselves, they start to care too much for the things that matter least. Bilbo for example, has no interest in his approaching journey, rather he is fussing over his dishes and cloths, casting away the needs of others and the outside world. Much like Tolkien s famous character, so many people are worried about just themselves. They have no interest in the outside would and their growth stops and courage hinders. A person can be very well off but if they are so wrapped up with their own affairs, and do not experience the world they cannot grow and mature. Without growing and maturing, real world issues aren t addressed and communication becomes surreal. No one knows how to address these issues and that just creates more anarchy. • 38. Literary Devices In Romeo And Juliet Romeo and Juliet Literary Analysis Essay Literary devices are reveal several details about characters in stories, movies, plays, and other writings. Oxymorons are two opposites placed right next to each other. A paradox is simply a oxymoron except seperated and placed in a sentence. Lastly, a juxtaposition is contrasting two objects such as characters, places, and even their actions. William Shakespeare successfully added all of these literary devices into his famous play Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare indirectly revealed character traits for Romeo, Juliet, and Friar Laurence by using all three of these literary devices. Shakespeare used the figurative language to indirectly describe who Romeo is. Romeo and Mercutio argue with each other about the importance of dreams (1.4.11 103). During Mercutio s Queen Mab speech, it reveals that Romeo is a dreamer and Mercutio is not. This is a juxtaposition because Mercutio and Romeo have two different mindsets on dreams. In the case of the villagers who populate Gabriel Garcia Marquez s Chronicle of a Death Foretold , the concept of community triggers feelings of hostility, vengeance, and anger. As far as this town s culture goes, family and religiontrump all: they drive the Vicario brothers to murder, and force the women of the village to reach unrealistic standards under obscure guidelines. It seems no one is immune to the strength of these shared beliefs and values. Even normal citizens fall victim to the opinion, their negligence leaving them as much at fault for Santiago s murder as the very perpetrators themselves. It exists as the driving force behind Santiago s murder, suggesting that compassion is discarded when honor and respect are at stake. To the people of the fictitious village, honor [is] a brittle value one that cannot be rescued if harmed (Lipsett Rivera). Such a concept is illustrated through the actions of the Vicario twins, who stab Santiago to death in cold blood over the honor of their sister. Despite their open confession, both brothers still claim to be innocent under the idea their crime was, before God and before men...a matter of honor (49). The religious connotation intertwined with the act of killing suggests that exacting revenge is reverent, and therefore necessary to keep true to their faith and code of honor. Furthermore, the parallel structure of the phrase before God and before men furthers the link between faith and honor. By associating the terms God and men with each other, Marquez reveals that the notion of humanity is based on religious conviction. Thus, the only way to retain status as a good human is to follow religious constructs, and in the case of the Vicario brothers, to kill. This idea is furthered in the aftermath of the murder, when Marquez asserts that in killing Santiago, the brothers Vicario had proved their status as men (80). As with religion, honor itself is constantly emphasized as a framework for social hierarchy in the village. In killing Santiago, the brothers cemented not only their faith, but their rank in society as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. The Death Of A Sleeping Pill Alternative Views: There are conflicting views on the use of stilnox as a sleeping aid and the use of sleeping aids as the amount of people that have died as result of these drugs is slowly increasing. In America, a study by Scribbs Health, a non profit organisation, estimates that, 500,000 excess deaths have been caused by taking drugs such as Ambien (American equivalent of stilnox) and Restoril . These deaths are a result of two main factors, unconscious behaviours and suicide. Commiting suicide using a sleeping pill is the preferred method for women as it causes the metabolic pathways throughout the body to start shutting down. These systems include the respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems and the result of such a widespread shut down is death. The drug is attributed with certain behaviours that occur while being unconscious. It has been reported by numerous patients that the drug results in sleep related behaviours such as, sleepwalking and has resulted in many deaths. Stilnox however can be beneficial to those that are effected by mental health issues and suffering from sleep deprivation. Sleep disturbance can be caused by numerous variables however, a main cause can be hormonal imbalance. Stilnox binds to receptors in the brain, which promotes drowsiness. The data on Table 1 shows that the men in the meeting had more turns but there was an exception (woman D) and the men in the meeting generally spoke for longer per turn but again there was an exception (woman B). Additionally men also interrupted more (except for man E), and men were interrupted more except Man E and Man I, therefore there is no significant pattern in terms of which gender was interrupted more. Robin Lakoff found that women s language lacks authority when compared to that used by men and she believes that women use many techniques in their speech that are deficient to men s speech. In the Deficit Model Robin Lakoff describes male language as stronger, more prestigious and more desirable. She argues that women are socialised into behaving like ladies . She gives examples of language techniques women use that make their language seem deficient these include, fillers, hedges e.g. sort of , you know , intensifiers e.g. so , weak expletive terms e.g. oh dear , empty adjectives e.g. charming, sweet, hypercorrect grammar and tag questions which shows uncertainty e.g. isn t it? Moreover she interprets that women use more precise colour terms e.g. mauve, magneta. I agree that women use these techniques but they don t make women deficient to men.
