Effect of free surface boundary and wall flexibility in seismic design of liq...eSAT Journals
Abstract Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) itself is a vast and extensive discipline. It originated from studies of aero and hydro-elasticity, which are often related to aeronautics and aerospace as well as nuclear industries. In practice, within the scope of nuclear, civil, aerospace, ocean, chemical and mechanical engineering, there are many terminologies involved, ie., flow induced vibration, aero-elasticity, hydro-elasticity, fluid structure interaction and fluid solid interaction. Typical problems include structure interaction with surface and sound waves and vibrations and stabilities of cables, pipes, plates and shells. In this paper, the effect of fluid structure interaction on the modal characteristics of a cylindrical steel water tank with and without free surface effect is considered. Acoustic structure interaction using unsymmetric pressure based formulation is used to solve the coupled system using FEM and the procedure is validated using results from published literature. Two tank models (shallow and tall) are modeled using ANSYS and modal analysis was done by considering different conditions like with slosh and without slosh. The effect of fluid mass on the convective and impulsive modes of tall and shallow aspect ratio tanks is shown. Parametric study is done for different fluid levels to characterize the variation of slosh frequencies in both rigid and flexible wall conditions. Free surface is considered in fluid alone model to predict the slosh frequencies employing rigid wall boundary. Then slosh frequencies got from both rigid and flexible wall conditions are compared with design data frequency tabulated from the GSDMA Guidelines. From this we can say that the flexibility of tank wall has a greater effect on the slosh frequencies. Key Words: Fluid-structure Interaction, Impulsive mode, Convective mode, Slosh frequency
A NUMERICAL STUDY ON INTERFERENCE EFFECTS OF CLOSELY SPACED STRIP FOOTINGS ON...IAEME Publication
Foundations of structures often need to be placed close to meet the architectural as well as the functional requirements. In such cases, the combined action of footings is different from a single footing. It causes interference of the stress zones. In the present study, the interference effects of two closely spaced strip footings on the surface of cohesive and cohesionless soils are being investigated. Parametric studies are done for two footings by varying the spacing between the footings and the width of the footings. The results are presented in terms of efficiency factors. In the first case, both the footings are loaded simultaneously up to failure. In the second case, one of the footings representing an already existing foundation is loaded with half of the estimated failure load of isolated footing and adjacent footing loaded up to failure. The effect of interference is observed to be particularly significant in terms of the settlement. Effect of shear keys placed beneath the footings, at different locations beneath the footing and the interference of such footings is also studied in case of stiff clay. It is found that the presence of shear keys has a significant effect on the interference between the footings, compared to without the shear keys, especially in reducing the tilt of foundations.

Abstract The present research work is to determine buckling load per unit length in rectangular plate with circular cut-outs under bi-axial compression using 2D finite element analysis. The commercial finite element analysis software ANSYS has been successfully executed. The buckling factors are evaluated by changing the position of the holes, length to thickness ratio. The effect of changing the position of holes, a/b ratio, b/t ratio and buckling load per unit length is discussed. The results shows that buckling load per unit length is in clamped-clamped boundary conditions and buckling load is more at top positioned hole, decreases with increase in aspect ratio, decrease with increase breadth to thickness ratio. Keywords: Buckling analysis, Finite element method, Buckling load per unit length , carbon/epoxy composite plate, aspect ratio, b/t ratio, and Biaxial load.
Behaviour of 3 d rc frames with masonry infill under earthquake loads an ana...eSAT Journals
Abstract Moderate and astringent earthquakes have struck different places in the world, causing rigorous damage to reinforced concrete
structures. The bond between the structural elements and masonry in-fills of the building is habitually effected by Earthquake. The
voids between horizontal and vertical resisting elements of the building frame is filled by Masonry in-fills. An infill wall enhances
considerably the strength and rigidity of the structure. It has apperceived that frames with in-fills have more vigor and rigidity
compared to the bare frames Hence this study is about the demeanor of 3D-RC frames with and without masonry in-fills utilizing
E-TABS. parameters were studied like displacement, lateral load distribution, stiffness and overturning moment of the frames and
it is concluded that, the in-fill walls are needed to be considered while designing phase of the structures.

NONLINEAR FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS UNDER PUNCHIN...IAEME Publication
This paper presents an implementation of a three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model for evaluating the behavior of reinforced concrete slabs under centric load. The concrete was idealized by using eight-nodded solid elements. While flexural reinforcement and the shear were modeled as line elements, a perfected bond between solid elements and line elements was assumed. The nonlinear behavior of concrete in compression is simulated by an elasto-plastic work-hardening model, and in tension a suitable post-cracking model based on tension stiffening and shear retention models are employed. The steel was simulated using an elastic-full plastic model. The validity of the theoretical formulations and the program used was verified through comparison with available experimental data, and the agreement has proven to be good. A parametric study has been also carried out to investigate the influence of the slab thickness on column-slab connection response

Scour investigation around single and two piers sidebyside arrangementeSAT Journals
Abstract Laboratory experiments concerning scour development around single and two piers side by side arrangement have been conducted in order to provide a comparison of scour depths and patterns. The experiments are carried out under unidirectional currents of clear-water scour conditions. A variety of conditions including different flow depths, pier diameters and pier spacing are considered to have significant influence on the development of the potential scour hole. The research on local scour around single and two piers side by side arrangement are studied by using a 15.24 m long, 0.46 m wide and 0.4 m deep flume in the Hydraulics and Hydrology Laboratory, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).Experimental results describing the scour-hole depths and patterns are discussed. The results show that the magnitude and extent of the scour depth depends directly on pier size, pier spacing and flow condition. Piers, which are larger in diameter, produced greater scour depth. It also shows that by increasing the pier spacing, the scour depth around two piers decreases and closes to values of single pier. The two piers act as an obstruction which disturbed the flow field and caused large turbulence levels to be generated. Thereby, a further increase in the scouring velocity is produced giving relatively higher scour depth values. The prime factors governing the local scouring process associated with piers are pier spacing, horseshoe vortex, reinforcing and sheltering. The results show that good agreement with previous study where the down flow causes of increased scour for a single pier case. Meanwhile, the horseshoe vortex appears to be the main cause of scour in the case of two piers side by side arrangement. This study aims to investigate the effect of single cavity when it presence at a
specific location within the homogenous soil, on the behavior of seepage and uplift
pressure under a hydraulic structure. The results are analyzed to introduce
deterministic formulae for calculating the amount of seepage and the uplift pressure
head. The work was done in three stages by using experimental investigation; the first
stage includes 36 models of 75mm in diameter cavity, while the second and the third
stages includes eight models for each with 100mm and 34mm diameter of cavity,
respectively. The results shows that, when the cavity presence at the left side its impact
was positive on the seepage behavior. While the influence was changed to a negative
impact when the cavity presence at the right side, except at some specific locations. The
statistical software has been employed to generate the two deterministic formulae, and
the results of multiple regressions are checked by statistical indices for the purpose of
recognizing the reliability of the proposed formulae.
A Computational Analysis of Flow StructureThrough Constant Area S-DuctIJERA Editor
This paper presents the results of an experimental work with measurement of mean velocity contours in 2-D form and validation of the same with numerical results based on the y+ approach at fully developed flow for various turbulent models like, k-ε model, k-ω model, RNG k-ε model and Reynolds Stress Model (RSM), are used to solve the problem. All the turbulence models are studied in the commercial CFD code of Fluent. The experiment is carried out at mass averaged mean velocity of 40m/s and the geometry of the duct is chosen as rectangular cross-section of 45°/45° curved constant area S-duct. In the present paper the computational results obtained from the different turbulence models are compared with the experimental results. In addition to this for validation of the numerical simulation near wall treatments for fully developed flow or log-law region are also investigated for wall 30<y+><300 in the region where turbulent shear dominates. It is concluded from the present study that the mesh resolving the fully turbulent region is sufficiently accurate in terms of qualitative features. Here RSM turbulence model predicts the best results while comparing with the experimental results.RSM model also predicts the flow properties more consistently because it accounts for grid independence test.

Open channel flow velocity profiles for different reynolds numbers and roughn...eSAT Journals
Abstract A series of laboratory tests were carried out to understand the extent of effect of roughness and Reynolds number on mean velocity in both outer and inner scaling. To this end, four different types of bed surface conditions (impermeable smooth bed, impermeable rough bed, permeable sand bed and impermeable distributed roughness) and two different Reynolds number (Reh = 47,500 and 31,000) were adopted in the study. Sand particles of median diameter of 2.46 mm were used to create the roughness. The results show that the mean velocities collapsed well for different Reynolds number and for all different bed surfaces. The maximum velocity for all flow conditions were observed below some distances from the free surface. The location of maximum velocity is seen to be dependent on both of roughness and Reynolds number. The smooth bed test data agrees well with the standard log law and collapses well in viscous sub layer and overlap region. The extent of collapses is found to be dependent on Reynolds number. Friction coefficient is noted to be dependent on both the Reynolds number and roughness. Key Words: Open channel flow, Reynolds number, Roughness, mean velocity, friction coefficient, log law

Design Optimization and Development in Air Pollution Control DeviceIJERA Editor
Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) is the device used to remove the dust particles from the processed gases coming out of boilers in cement industries, and iron core industries. There are many governing factors that affect the efficiency from that one major reason is to fully filled hopper. When hopper fills 70 % of its full limit the precipitation process stopped of that particular hopper. For remedy dust removal efficiency is increased by hopper vibrator at the time of emptying bagasse ash from the hopper. The maximum displacement is getting by using different hopper wall thicknesses, stiffener spacing as well as different configuration vibrators. Due to minimum time to complete project there are many difficulties to test at every stage to improve the design and this results in increased project cost. For this situation there is one simple way to improve the design of equipment’s through simulation in ANSYS and validation by actual physical measurements. This project presents FEA approach for modeling and analysis the hopper of electrostatic precipitator using Static, Modal and Harmonic analysis. Actual model testing is done for the validation of results. The results coming out from the FEA analysis and testing are discussed.

Analysis of cross flow induced vibration in an inline and staggered configura...eSAT Journals
Abstract
In many engineering applications like heat exchanger, radiator, evaporator, nuclear power plant and thermal power plant, arrangement of tubes is very crucial. Fluid elastic instability forms the basis for deciding the type of arrangement and tube spacing but the phenomenon of vortex induced vibration is random in nature. Tube spacing also plays a critical role in different types of arrangement. Different type of application requires different tube spacing and the range of tube spacing vary from 1 to 6. Vortex Induced Vibration in cross flow around the inline and staggered arrangement of the tube arrays is experimentally studied for varying P/d (tube spacing) ratio. It is observed that with the increase in the velocity, the amplitude displacement increases. As the amplitude displacement of the tube reduces, the pitch over diameter ratio is increased from 2 to 4. It is also observed that between inline and staggered arrangement, the amplitude displacement of staggered arrangement is more compared to inline arrangement for same tube spacing.

EFFECT OF HEIGHT OF TRIANGULAR SIIL ON THE PERFORMANCE OF STILLING BASIN MODEL H. L. Tiwari1, V.K.Gehlot2, Seema Tiwari3 2Department of Civil Engineering, Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh India 2Department of Civil Engineering, Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh India 3AISECT University, Bhopal, India Abstract This research paper investigates the effect of height of triangular intermediate sill on the performance of stilling basin models for non circular pipe outlet. The experimental study was carried out for three Froude numbers namely 3.85, 2.85 and 1.85 for non-circular pipe outlet. Performance index (PI) has been used to evaluate the performance of stilling basin models tested using same sand base material and test run time. The scour pattern was measured for each test run and flow pattern was also observed. After 24 tests runs, it was found that scour process were reduced for a particular height of triangular of intermediate sill combined with end sill of particular size and shape. Performance of this model was found to be better than USBR VI impact basin for similar flow condition. Keywords: Intermediate sill, pipe outlet, stilling basin, Scour pattern.
----------------------------------------------------------------------***----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. INTRODUCTION Stilling basins are normally used in reducing the excess energy downstream of hydraulic structure like over flow spillway, sluices, pipe outlets, etc. The effect of sill on the flow and or scour characteristics depends upon the configuration of the sill, its geometry and the flow regime, Negm (2004). Various types of recommended stilling basin designs for pipe outlets are by Bradely and Peterka (1957), Fiala and Maurice(1961), Keim (1962), Flammer et al. (1970), Vollmer and Khader (1971), Verma and Goel (2000 & 2003) , Goel (2008), Tiwari et al. (2011, 2012 &2013), Tiwari and Gahlot (2012) and Tiwari (2013 & 2013). Appurtenances play an important role in the reduction of kinetic energy of flowing water in the stilling basin. A stilling basin for a pipe outlet consists of appurtenances like splitter block, impact wall, intermediate sill and an end sill etc. The vertical end sill is a terminal element in the stilling basin, which has a great contribution in reduction of energy of flowing sheet of water and assists in to improve the flow pattern downstream of the channel thereby helps in reducing the length of stilling basin also. The sill height, configuration and position have great impact on the formation and control of hydraulic jump and ultimately leading to the dissipation of energy of flowing water. The present research paper concentrates on the improvement of the performance of stilling basin model by using triangular intermediate sill of varying height along with end sill and impact wall. Performance of stilling basin models is compared with performance index (PI). Higher value of PI indicates better performance of the model (Tiwari et al.2014).
2. EXPERIMENTAL ARRANGEMENT AND PROCEDURE
The experiments were conducted in a recirculating laboratory flume of 0.95 m wide 1 m deep and 25 m long. The width of flume was reduced to 58.8 cm by constructing a brick wall along the length for keeping ratio of width of basin to equivalent diameter of rectangular outlet equal to 6.3 as per design of Gardes et al. (1986). A rectangular pipe of 10.8 cm. x 6.3 cm. was used to represent the outlet flow. The exit of pipe was kept above stilling basin by one equivalent diameter (1d =9.3cm). To observe the scour after the end sill of stilling basin a erodible bed was made of coarse sand passing through IS sieve opening 2.36 mm. and retained on IS sieve opening 1.18mm. The maximum depth of scour (dm) and its distance from end sill (ds) was measured for each test after one hour run time. The depth of flow over the erodible bed was maintained equal to the normal depth of flow. The model stilling basin USBR type VI, proposed by Bradley and Peterka (1957) was fabricated with impact wall of size 20.46cm.x58.8 cm with hood of size 9.3cmx58.8cm and sloping end sill of height 9.3cm and base width 9.3cm was fabricated. The discharge was measured by a calibrated venturimeter installed in the feeding pipe. With the operation of tail gate the desired steady flow condition with normal depth was maintained. After one hour the test run, motor was switched off. The value of maximum depth of scour (dm) and its location from the end sill (ds) were noted. USBR VI model was tested with impact wall and end sill and then again models were tested with seven different intermediate sills. All tested models with appurtenances are shown in Figures 1 to 3. All the testing were performed for constant running time of one hour and

with the same erodible material for three Froude numbers ie,3.85, 2.85 and 1.85. Further scouring pattern was observed by using triangular intermediate sill of different height, kept at the distance of 4d from the exit of the pipe, thus total 24 test runs were performed to evaluate the performance of stilling basin models by using intermediate sill of different height. Scheme of experimentation is shown in Table 1.

3. CRITERIA FOR PERFORMANCE OF EVALUATION FOR A STILLING BASIN A stilling basin model that produces smaller depth of scour at a longer distance is considered to have a better performance as compared to another stilling basin which results in a larger depth of scour at a shorter distance when tested under similar flow condition Verma & Goel (2003). The performance of a stilling basin models were tested for different Froude number (Fr) which is a function of channel velocity (v), the maximum depth of scour (dm) and its location from end sill (ds). A new non dimensional number, called as performance index (PI) developed by Tiwari et al (2011) has been used for comparison of performance of stilling basin models. This is given as below: Where, V - the mean velocity of channel, ds - distance of maximum depth of scour from end sill, dm- depth of maximum scour, g – gravitation acceleration, ρs- density of sand, ρw density of water, d50- the particle size such that 50% of the sand particle is finer than this size, A higher value of performance index indicates a better performance of the stilling basin model. The value of Performance index for various runs on each model for different Froude numbers are given in Table 2.

4. RESULTS AND ANALYSIS To study the effect of height of triangular intermediate sill on the performance of stilling basin models for pipe outlet, seven models, were tested for three Froude numbers, namely 1.85, 2.85 and 3.85. The data pertaining to depth of scour and its location from end sill were collected for each model and reported in table2 to evaluate their performance by using performance index. First of all USBR VI model (MSM-6) was tested and values of PI was computed as 2.67, 2.63 and 3.42 for Fr=1.85, 2.85 and 3.85 respectively.
In continuation of the investigation of the height of triangular intermediate sill, the performance of the basin models were tested with triangular intermediate sill of varying height from 2.5d to 0.5d with same base width as 1d along with impact wall located at 3d and sloping end sill fixed at 8.4d. These models were named as MSM-18, MSM-19, MSM-20, MSM- 21and MSM-22 respectively. It was reported that by reducing the height of triangular intermediate sill from 2,5d to 0.5d in model MSM18 to MSM-22, the performance of model (MSM- 2) improved as compared to the performance of model (MSM- 18) for Froude number 1.85 ,2.85 and 3.85,because PI values

After analysis, it was found that by changing the height of triangular intermediate sill there is improvement in the performance of the basin. It is so because of impact action, a reduction of energy is more, thereby improvement of the basin performance. Intermediate sill of suitable height promotes the dissipation of energy in the basin by lifting high velocity filaments from the bed. No doubt performance of the stilling basin models improves with the inclusion of intermediate sill, which also confirms the findings of Negm (2007).Similar finding was also reported by Tiwari & Tiwari (2013) and Tiwari et al. (2014). 5. CONCLUSIONS An experimental investigation was conducted to study the effect of height of triangular inter mediate sills along with impact wall and end sill. Seven intermediate sills of different height varying from 2,5d to 0.5d were tested. The scouring is significantly reduced there by increasing the performance index for triangular intermediate sill of height 0.5d and base width d, placed at the distance of 4d from the exit of pipe outlet. It is found that triangular intermediate sill of height 0.5d and base width as 1d, used in model MSM-22, produces higher performance indices and thus performs better as compared to all other tested models for all Froude numbers tested. Based on the results of experimental studies on stilling basin models, it can be concluded that the height of triangular intermediate sill greatly affect the performance of a stilling basin. Efficient stilling basin model (MSM-22) has been evolved by experimentation as compared to USBR VI stilling basin model, MSM-6.
