An earthquake is caused by sudden movements of the earth's crust. The point where it originates is called the focus, and the point directly above on the surface is the epicenter. Earthquakes are measured on the Richter scale using a seismometer. Bhutan experiences frequent earthquakes because it is located in an active seismic zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, creating pressure along fault lines like the Main Himalayan Thrust fault that runs through Bhutan.
