Empathy & Awareness of others (Others = parents) For a moment, step into parents’ shoes • What is life like for a parent today? • What type of challenges do parents face today? • How does school ‘occur’ to parents? ( a building/ principal/ teacher/ rules/ PTA/ rigid/judgemental ) • Trying to understand parents’ competence in parenting skills 14

After Self awareness and Awareness of others • Shared goal - What is the one thing that is equally important to both parents and the school? • Parent behavior is a function of the parent’s personal circumstances how ‘school’ occurs to them Parent awareness and parenting skill or competence Amount of time parents spend with children – quantity vs quality • Every parent experiences a unique attachment to school • Schools are powerful 15

  2. Start by acknowledging that something is wrong with the world, changes over last 20 yrs
  3. 2 types of worksheets – survey – Questions and clarifications
  4. This corresponds to the first part of the worksheet – participants to evaluate the extent to which each of these concerns are presented in their respective schools
  5. A child is the product of these 3 environments, which interact to determine how the child will grow and develop. Child development has changed over the last two decades – so have each of these environments. Is this change accompanied by chaos – leaving various stakeholders grappling with the change!
  6. Talking about neuroplasticity, SEL competencies being trainable & modifiable
  7. First read the slide, time for introspection and self reflection, then introduce worksheeet - to take away – yours, Worksheet front page – titled – Forging a better school parent partnership, 1. Evaluating the problem, left column
  8. The facilitator will also mention the privileged position of participants who are parents as well. Will highlight that it is quite probable that parents face challenges in these areas.
  9. Having explained how essential it is to set expectations while working towards a shared goal – facilitator will discuss various kinds of expectations – ‘known’ , ‘assumed’ and ‘unmet’ expectations.
